"Casa" is the Portuguese word for "house." It's also the title of this melodic and moving tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim by the Oscar® and Grammy award-winning pianist-composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, Brazilian cellist Jaques Morelenbaum, and his vocalist wife, Paula. The Morelenbaums, who cofounded Quarteto Jobim-Morelenbaum, both worked with the maestro, and almost all of the tracks here were recorded in Jobim's Rio home. The CD contains fluid and florid renditions of bossa nova-era classics from the Jobim canon, from "Amor em Paz"--with Jobim's son Paulo on guitar--and "Bonita" to "Vivo Sonhando." It also unveils rare songs like "Chanson pour Michelle," a short and sweet composition written for a soap opera, and a never-before-heard work, "Tema para Ana," an intimate piano/cello duet. Sakamoto's spare and splendid pianisms ring from Jobim's piano. Morelenbaum's singing cello tones complement his wife's angelic Portuguese and English vocals. Together this talented trio--with occasional accompaniment by percussionist Marcos Suzano, guitarist Luiz Brasil, vocalist Ed Motta, and bassist Zeca Assumpçao--beautifully exposes the French influences of Satie, Ravel, and Chopin in Jobim's music. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Celestial music - .......2007-05-07
My Profile: 43 yo - no music qualifications whatsoever-
I got this fine cd last year in my first time in Buenos Aires.. though my trip was for widenning my musical horizons.. what can I said that has not been adequately commented by more knowledable reviewers than I?.. the music is serene, celestial, non-strident...he piano, the cello and that voice!! you know you are prividledged in life to have a chance to comtemplate on this type of beauty... whatever scars we have in the soul and body, take a moment to soothe yourself..
Gentle Magic to Free Your Soul.......2007-03-28
I just love love love this CD. Everything about it is so artfully rendered, it takes my soul away to gently float free in a most beautiful place. Ms. Morelenbaun has a voice that, of all female vocals in the world, is often my most favorite to hear. Virtually no vibrato, just clean and clear exquisite and delicate classic femininity. Mr. Morelenbaum, Mr. Sakamoto and all supporting musicians provide the most sensitively interwoven instrumental skills that there could ever be; they perfectly ride, complement and contribute to the magical musical moment that is always now, in flowing pieces such as these. Of course, the ineffably beautiful heart and soul of the basic songs to start with are indispensible (thank you now and forever, o-most revered JC Jobim!). Honestly, this CD places in my top 10 of all time, especially now, in my more relaxed and gentle mature years... ;)
Some of the Best Music ever!.......2007-02-03
I came by the Morelenbaums by 'A Day in New york'. It was love at first
sound. I checked out to see if anything else was available. I found 'Casa'
and immediately ordered it. It has been in my CD player since I got it.
This from a Classical music buff and a college music degree. This music
defies description (I do like bossa nova and Jobim especially). This group is so together, it sounds like the members know exactly what each
other is thinking. It is all so right that it appears precision and class
like this is not possible. Paula's voice has a simple (without vibrato) beauty that is mesmerizing. The arrangements are exquisite. The Cello and piano never over-do and the whole is something you must hear to believe. I can only add to this - GET IT!!
jazzman.......2007-01-17
Absolutely fabulous renditions of Jobim. Paula's voice is so pure and
gentle, along with Jacques' cello gliding through the sketches. And the
pianist Sakamoto is perfect as well. I just love this cd. I quickly
obtained their other Jobim tribute cd "A Day in New York" (the Japanese
enhanced version with 5 bonus tracks), which is even further proof that
there is a musical heaven on earth. So sophistocated, cool, and gentle.
I eagerly await their next release. 5 million stars.
absolutely amazing...........2006-01-16
So much to say about this wonderful recording. As I write this, there are 27 reviews posted for Casa and not one of them is less than 4 stars, with the vast majority as 5 stars. That speaks volumes in itself. But the quality of the words and the thought behind them is truly a tribute to Jobim. If we were all lucky enough to have him with us now, the words of these reviews would surely either make him smile or bring tears of joy to his eyes. This truly is music that soothes...reflects...and makes us all appreciate either finding it or being introduced to it by someone. Introduce only your best friends to this, those that would appreciate it as much as you and I do.

New Orleans musicians have a long-standing tradition--no doubt brought on by the need to fill up that fourth set of the evening--of playing unlikely covers that end up transcending the original hits. The Meters did it with "Wichita Lineman." Irma Thomas did it with "Wind Beneath My Wings." And Galactic set out to do it on this live collection, peppering their homecoming concert with groove-laden covers torn from the songbooks of Duke Ellington ("Blue Pepper"), Allen Toussaint ("Working in a Coal Mine"), Chocolate Milk ("My Mind Is Hazy"), and even Black Sabbath ("Sweet Leaf"). While those tracks earn points for novelty and eclecticism, the keepers here are unreleased originals like "Moog Marmalade" (think vintage Meters funk with lots of modal sax and analog synth tossed in for good measure) and fan favorites like "Two Clowns," which is arguably Galactic's most interesting song to date. The album is not without its excesses (the 90-seconds of applause baiting at the end of "Lumpology" wears thin quickly), but New Orleans's answer to Medeski Martin & Wood wouldn't have earned their place in the jam-band pantheon without an implicit understanding that anything worth doing is worth overdoing. --Bill Forman
Customer Reviews:
It was good suff, yeah!.......2007-07-14
Excellent composition backed by solid beat. Everyone does their part to put together a combination sound that moves the soul.
A great live representation of the classic lineup.......2007-04-18
Galactic today isn't exactly the same band they once were, with their vocalist Theryl De'Clouet departing a few years ago and the band moving to an essentially instrumental sound. They're now combining their signature spacey funk sound with some hip-hop sounds on a new album, but they're still laying down the priceless live sound that they used to, just without vocals. That's what this album is all about--showing what made Galactic popular in the first place; their relentless touring and fiercely enjoyable and energetic live sound. It's tough to distill such a diverse and sprawling live repertoire into one disc, but I think (having seen Galactic live 6 times) We Love 'Em Tonight does a pretty great job of playing to the band's strengths and representing their live sound--some great jams, an energetic interaction with the crowd, some favorites from their studio recordings mixed with obscure tunes, and about 1/3 to 1/2 of the show featuring the Houseman, their vocalist.
The best part about seeing Galactic live is the ridiculous heights their instrumentals and jams reach--this album shows that right away with the standard "Crazyhorse Mongoose," featuring the improvisational skills of pretty much all the band members (excepting maybe bassist Robert Mercurio)--by the time of this album's recording, Jeff Raines had really improved his chops and improv abilities, Rich Vogel shines on his many keyboards (especially the Moog synthesizer sound that typifies the band's sound on many tracks, as well as hammond, electric piano and clavinet), Ben Ellman's funky, slightly jazzy sax, and Stanton Moore's unbeatable drumming abilities.
This album is a great look into Galactic's restlessness with their classic songs--they turn album classics like "Baker's Dozen" and "Two Clowns" on their ends, adding and changing a lot of elements from the album versions in ways that sound fresh and exciting. It's great to hear the crowd's involvement as the group reaches energetic peaks in the songs--the energy is infectious, and a hallmark of a successful live album. The Houseman's contributions are, for the most part, successful. He sounds a bit rough on "Vilified," but the chestnuts "My Mind is Hazy," "I Get Lifted," and the wicked funky reworking of Black Sabbath's "Sweet Leaf" are totally essential. A few of the other instrumentals (I'm thinking "Lumpology" and Ellington's "Blue Pepper," for example), though well-played and energetic, seem a bit random and not representative of Galactic's live standards on their sole live disc, but I suppose that eclecticism is accurately reflective of Galactic's live shows. "Shibuya," at least, is a shining example of Galactic's barnstorming pre-encore closers, with Raines' slide guitar rocking hard and Ben Ellman's harmonica matching the groove note for note through a lurching finish.
If you're a fan of Galactic or have seen them live, I wholeheartedly recommend this disc--it's worth the money and didn't let me down as a recorded document of their live shows. It's probably not the best place to start for people who aren't familiar, although Galactic's studio albums often don't really represent their live sound (especially 2003's excellent but unrepresentative Ruckus album). Hope you enjoy the funk!
Hot funky jazz.......2002-08-30
My first Galactic album, and it won't be the last. If some of the other reviewers (who don't like this album as much as Galactic's prior efforts) are correct, I have to get more.
This is extremely hot.
A solid disc worth having.......2002-01-05
Having seen these guys live a couple of times, I know they spare no expense (sweat) in kicking out the groove. This recording is no exception to the fantastic live sound that results. However, I think the creative punch of the band has been tapering since Coolin' Off. Granted, they've produced some gems since that first disc, but have failed to recapture that fresh feel that originally turned me on to their sound. This album is not necessarily a natural progression in that trend, as it does include some very interesting covers, and a previously unreleased Moog Marmalade (which is sick), but I feel like they need to switch gears to retain my interest. Bottom line, you should own this album, especially if you're into galactic, but don't expect it to blow your mind.
Not Galactic? Huh? Great disc!.......2001-12-12
Whoever said this CD was lacking "groove" or "soul" obviously knows little about music. This is Galactic's best release to date, just worlds better than their studio work. It's funky, laid-back, and groovin'. Good mix of tunes, a great "Blue Pepper" and the "Bobski > Villified" is awesome. If you are a fan of this hard-to-classify jazzy funk, Nawlins gumbo, pick this up. It won't fail to put a smile on your face and make all ten toes tap.

Customer Reviews:
All of the songs you wanna hear!!.......2005-09-27
Great disc, must have for true FIREHOUSE fans, all the hits with a high quality sound!!!
GOOD LIVE ALBUM.......2001-03-11
I think what I like about this album most is the live rawness it has to it. When I buy a live album I like it that way. That is, an album where you can hear the crowd, mistakes that might be made, and just the cool feel it has like you are right there in the crowd. What some people want I think is the band to go into the studio and re-record their albums(or songs). Some bands do that, like Great White, L.A.Guns,Warrant,etc. And that is fine also but if you want a live album that you can crank up and hear songs that in my opinion sound better than studio versions("When I Look Into Your Eyes", "Overnight Sensation",etc.) then this is the album for you!
Great band, production not to my tastes.......2000-12-05
I'm a Firehouse fan of the highest order. I've seen them live, have all their CDs and consider them one of the best bands in the world. C.J.'s voice ranks right up there with Steve Perry, Dennis DeYoung, Robert Plant, Freddie Mercury and other legendary singers. They write extremely catchy tunes. And they're nothing short of electrifying in concert.
Unfortunately, this live CD doesn't live up to Firehouse's usual standards for pristine production (witness Good Acoustics, Category 5 or 02, for example). I know guitarist Bill Leverty was going for a more ambient, audience-fueled recording, but I prefer live albums that showcase the band's performance rather than the audience's response to it. For example: any of the latest Pearl Jam "official bootleg" CDs...The Who Live at Leeds...Lou Reed Rock N Roll Animal, etc. The audience-heavy style worked for KISS Alive, but here it doesn't seem to. And I don't know why.
To me, Bring 'Em Out Live sounds like it were recorded under a pile of towels. The result is a distance and detachment that distract the hell out of me. When I listen to this CD, I never quite feel like I'm THERE; rather, I feel like I'm hearing the band from OUTSIDE of the auditorium.
Again, this isn't a reflection on the performance of the band (which is stellar as usual); rather, it's an opinion regarding my own personal taste in live album production. Others may have a completely different view.
As to the band's performance, it's outstanding. All the classic Firehouse tunes are here from the killer opener "Overnight Sensation" to "All She Wrote" to "When I Look Into Your Eyes" to "Bringing Me Down" to "Love of a Lifetime" right through to the last track, "Don't Treat Me Bad." The song line-up is incredible, a greatest hits collection other bands would kill to call their own.
I wish the recording had been "drier," though. Hopefully, their next live album (and I hope they have many more!) will have the sound I prefer.
NOTE: Don't let my review stop you from buying this CD. It's good. And the songs are excellent. See them live, though, if you really want to know what Firehouse is all about. This CD doesn't do them justice.
Bring em out again!.......2000-08-05
This CD leaves you wanting more new firehouse music. Every song sounds as smooth as the studio version yet they managed to add a few more guitar notes. I have never heard the Catagory 5 CD but Dream blew me away. What a beautiful sounding Ballad. Acid Rain show Firehouse has only improved themselves as artists. I dont understand why they arent one of the biggest rock bands in the US. They offer a wide variety of ballads and power rock songs with very clever lyrics. The CD offers THREE encores with I live my Life for you, Here For You, and Dont Treat Me Bad. The Japanese crowd seemed to really appreciate this well put together concert. Anybody looking for a CD that represents rock in all ways buy this CD you wont be dissapointed. Keep em comin Firehouse!

skillful evocative solo guitar.......2007-03-20
this guy takes a 2-note berimbau riff and turns it into a few guitar chords - then he really launches it. this is a lesson in how to take a little nylon string guitar and, using only your fingers, make it sound HUGE. there is some singing in portuguese - i dont understand it but it isnt bad - but to a guitar player this is revolutionary stuff.

Awesome.......2006-07-14
While being a relatively new listener to VI, "Come On In" being my first purchase, "Show 'Em Where You Live" is right there in a similar vein. Eclectic drum patterns, Gambale being Gambale, Mr. Costner, thanks to you I have an appreciation for the accordion and Mr. Brown.....wow. Great recording, great tracks and I'm looking forward to the next album. This album is "Cranial" crazy, man! Oh yeah, Steve, other than money, what the hell were you doing in Journey??!!
HEROIN ANYONE?.......2004-10-05
WOW, I literally just popped this cd into my CD player, and I am completely blown away. So blown away that my grahamr is absolutly terrrible....Steve Smith really opened me up to Vital Informaiton through his DVD set "History of the Drum Beat". As soon as I first heard this band, I knew I had to buy this CD. Definatly one of my best purchases in a long time. I would say since LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT or DREAM THEATER (check them out). Again, words can't express how much I love this band now. All the tracks are instrumental, which I absolutly love, and the acordian is definatly something that I am not used to, but it rocks none the less. I love the combination of jazz/funk and rock, and it goes together so well.
A MUST HAVE FOR FUSION/PROGRESSIVE HEADS EVERYWHERE!!!
Tom, trade that accordion in for a piano!!.......2004-03-20
I own every Vital Information album released ( including the first four that are out of print, which I've managed to burn to CD ). This one, while interesting, is simply a bit stale for me...musicianship, as always, remains stunning, but Steve Smith & Co haven't changed the current format for the past three albums. I miss the jazz voices of their earlier efforts: acoustic piano, tenor/alto saxophone, etc...Steve, if by some chance you're reading this, PLEASE get Tom to dust off that acoustic piano and incorporate it back into V.I.'s music! Again, the chops are awe-inspiring, but I for one could do without the ongoing "Cranial Jam" ( whose continuity during the last three albums seems almost like a private joke among the band members that we're apparently supposed to try to figure out ). Guys, you don't necessarily need to rotate musicians to keep Vital Information's sound fresh...just use some more of those enticingly seductive jazz voices ( even a flute player 'guesting' on one or two numbers would liven things up! ).
New fusion dignity !!!.......2003-11-17
This album and the previous from the band (Where we come from) redifine the world fusion givin' it a new interpretation, a new dignity and a new uptodateness. What the guys in the band did in the last few years was startin' a new exploration of their musical languages in order to rediscover their roots and to be able to find new ways of modern expressions through music. In the end this process paid. Here we have a strong album but more than anything else a strong new interpretation of fusion music. The recipe is: old instruments, new ideas. Hammond b3, Fender Rhodes, accordion, clean guitars, small drumset, .. used to play new musical visions. Not bad. The music: there's a lot of Jazz, but there's a lot of fusion too that's for sure but in the meantime here we are very far from the elevator music known a s fusion during the eighties. It's hard fusion, really near Jazz, there's a lot of improvisation and there are ideas. Wow! That's the best thing in the end! This is a strong album more than anything else because of its musical ideas. And of course because of the musicianship displayed by all the guys involved. Gambale, Coster, Smith and Browne they are perfectionists and here they prove their abilities. But I repeat, this album has contents: I didn't believe at first. This album is a Kickass. This music is a lot far from the kind of cheesy fusion played by the band in "Ray of hope" (which was not bad but maybe a little bit commercial). Here we have a heavy hammond jazz with a Kick. But this is only the dress. The substance is a new vocabulay strongly rooted in Jazz but with a modern fusion spice! It is a sort of Weather Report meet Tribal Tech meet Jimmy Smith kind of music. There is a true artistic approach. No commercial hooks here. And the more you go inside the album, the more you go on with the tracks 5, 6, ... 8, ... 10 the more experimental (but in the right way) the music goes!! I want to make my compiments to the band for this music and for their will to play fusion music in the new millenium against all music actual trends. This is surely fusion at his best.
Perfect Brew Between World Order and Democracy (aka Fusion).......2003-02-27
Fusion artists have been in a constant and desperate search for a brew that had just the right ingredients for generations. Vital Information, with this album, have reached an area upon their journey in which they are free, compatable and yet locked when it comes to orchestration. Technically, dynamically, keenly and wisely, the Vital Information have come to be more and more advanced over time. This album is a true culmination of all that time they've spent absorbing the energy that's generated every single time they play together. If you don't hear this album, you are missing out on something that, indirectly, has taken about 16 years to formulate. Similar to a diamond that formed over time, this album has equivilent glow, and should not be passed up. Please check this one out.

The exploits of Ian Fleming's British super-agent James Bond have long since become the longest running film series in history, spanning 40 years and counting. Not the least of the cycle's charm has been its music, a body of work that encompasses pop clichés (the twangy guitar of Monty Norman's original "James Bond Theme") and elegant underscores alike. While this collection spans music from Dr. No to The World Is Not Enough, decades of various legal entanglements prevented it from becoming the ultimate Bond music anthology. This is more a credible simulation, a newly recorded collection of cues and suites (including music previously unreleased on the original soundtracks) performed by Nic Raine and the City of Prague Symphony Orchestra. With John Barry's lush, ever-evocative scores both forming the core and setting the tone (but also featuring the work of George Martin, David Arnold, Michael Kamen, Bill Conti, and Eric Serra), it's the most comprehensive--if not exactly authentic--collection of Bond music yet attempted. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
almost the perfect James Bond collection.......2005-07-20
this 4 CD box has most of the familiar James Bond compositions.
Still, some tunes are missing(from for instance Thunderball and For Your Eyes Only)and most of the time the attention is on the instrumental version of the title track which is a bit of a shame. And yet, there are too many great pieces on this collection to make it a failure.Alpine Drive,Dawn Raid at Fort Knox,On Her Majesty's Secret Service(every track),Miss Goodhead and so on.All great pieces that not only show the great talent of John Barry but also the great power of James Bond films.Cause when you hear the music, you see the scenes in front of you.
Very much a recommendation to all Bond and Barry fans although sometimes it focusses too much on title songs. The only solution is to buy all separate soundtracks.
Good Collection.......2005-02-24
Very nice packaging and good tracks from the Bond music library make this an anoutstanding item. "From Russia With Love" and "Diamonds Are Forever" contain beautiful and energetic renditions. The John Barry music is handled quite well. I didn't real care for the David Arnold selections. "The World Is Not Enough" was weak. Overall it is a good collection just the same.
Not excatly what I expected.......2003-04-10
I when I read some of the reviews of this I thought that this was a complete collection of all the originals of the Theme songs of every James Bond movie and remakes done by the Prague Philharmonic of some of the other songs in the various movies. After recieveing this ... I started to listen to it and found out that it was all done by the orchestra. The are very good, but to a point it is not the same thing as owning a disc will all the orignal songs on it. Overall, this good if all the you want is the orchestral versions of most of the songs in the movies or the suites out of some of the movies. To a point these don't compare to the orignals. Keep looking if you want a set with all the orignals songs in it.
The James Bond CD for the John Barry purist?.......2003-01-28
Let's cut to the chase. Nic Raine and the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do John Barry's work justice. 90% of this collection is as close as you can get to the original James Bond soundtracks. The other 10% lends itself to some artistic license with respect to the arrangements. Most notable is the main theme to Goldfinger. Also Nic slips in a few previously unreleased tracks. You will find these on the On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Golden Eye tracks. This CD boxed set is definitely made for the Bond soundtrack fan. The die hard John Barry "purist"/ traditionalist may find some of these tracks questionable at first, but after a few times Nic Raine's artistic license gives a fresh perspective to the familiar Bond/ Barry themes. The only reservation I have with this CD set is with some of selections that are performed. For instance, from Goldfinger, "Dawn Raid At Fort Knox" was a poor selection considering the selection available on that particular soundtrack. The most famous 007 soundtrack of all I dare say. Overall Nic hits the mark, and this CD set is a tribute to Barry's (as well as, George Martin's, Marvin Hamlish's, and Bill Conti's and David Arnold's) work. It's all here in one collection. I am a die-hard Bond soundtrack fan, and to the casual soundtrack fan I say this CD is set all you need to experience the Bond music legacy. To those who are hard core 007 soundtrack fans ...this is a FANTASTIC "addition" to your collection. This has to be the BEST (and probably the only) 007 "soundtrack" compilation. Whereas all the others feature the "main themes" from the Bond films as originally recorded, this one truly gives you the Bond experience.
Very enjoyable with most of the BOND music you'd want........2002-12-08
This is similar but more comprehensive than another BOND collection on one CD by the City of Prague Philharmonic. These are good renditions but clearly not the orginals. I must ask if the Prague Philharmonic does not own a harp? It is glaringly missing in the Goldfinger themes and i am sure on others. That harp is an exciting and beautiful touch to the wonderful GOLDFINGER theme and its absents is unfortuneatly very noticeable. Also some of the other themes can even sound muzaky if thats a word(elevator music)
It gets 3 solid stars good collection yet defineatly something is lacking.

Mike Corrado Band Brings Live Energy to CD.......1999-12-21
If you haven't seen the Mike Corrado Band perform live, you don't know what you're missing. This CD brings all of the spirit, energy, and enthusiasm of the band to your own stereo. MCB fans may be familiar with many of the songs from former albums such as "Something You Ain't," "Damn," "Single With Toys," etc., but the live versions breathe new life into every song. From the feel-good upbeat tunes to the somber ballads, every song captures the powerful live performance of the band as only a live CD can! Every part of the music is so much richer... particularly Mike Corrado as vocalist and Joseph Yankel on the saxaphone, both who deliver their performance with great passion and pizzaz. The band also delves into some less-traveled territory with some of the newer songs and shows MCB's astounding ability to flow from one genre of music to another with artful expertise. The audience's applause, cheering, and singing-along gives me chills every time. There's no substitute for a Mike Corrado Band concert, but this live CD is the next best thing!
They keep on getting better, don't they?.......1999-10-30
It's good to see some good 'ole southern boys on the brink of stardom. This cd has the energy that the previous cd's lacked, but, then again how much energy can you squeeze from a studio? Glad to see that they keep getting better unlike some other regional bands, and they'll keep packing in the crowds with performances like these.
The Best Live CD I've heard in quite some time.......1999-10-13
I was there when they recorded this CD and I've seen the Mike Corrado Band live numerous times. They are incredible performers. Everytime they perform in my town or even close by, I am there. The musicians are incredible and are very friendly. They don't forget about the loyal fans and always take out time to shake someone's hand. I can't say enough great things about this CD. It covers their style of music with their normal songs but also shows how they do it live. Very nice.
Live energy in a CD.......1999-10-04
I went to both shows when they recorded this CD, and all the live energy is right there on the CD for everyone to hear. These guys will be up there with DMB and Edwin McCain really soon
Hear them Jam!!!.......1999-09-27
I own all the Mike Corrado Band CD's...even the one Mike released on his own before he formed the band. I think he and the band make great music, but until this live CD I had to wait for the band to come to town to hear the way they jam from one song into the next. And, of course, it is good to have a few new songs. Listening to a live Cd is no substitute for seeing them live, but it just has to do when they aren't in town. Check it out!
