Thanks to good marketing, good cover art, and good luck, this disc probably has sold more copies than most other recordings of Gregorian chant put together. It's often quipped that most of those discs have been listened to exactly once and put away--to the puzzlement of many musicians and critics, who point out that there are more beautiful, more varied performances by professional singers available. Yet the singing of these Spanish Benedictines has a special quality that probably explains this disc's popularity--a reverent serenity that no doubt stems from the fact that the monks are actually praying, not just performing. Granted, Chant can become a bit monotonous with repeated listening, but it really gives you the sense of devotion that has always been the purpose of "Gregorian" chant. If this recording (ahem) enchants you at first, wonderful. If you get bored with it later, don't give up--there has been an extraordinary variety of styles and sounds over the 1,500-year history of plainchant, so go exploring with Anonymous 4, Ensemble Gilles Binchois, Sequentia, or Ensemble Organum. You won't be sorry. --Matthew WestphalCustomer Reviews:

Tough to categorize but..........2007-06-06
This is the canadian "rapper's" third studio release, and he increasingly becomes better with each release. On this trip, the entire album has a feel, whether its the somber "Highway Seven" or the rock-laden "Born To Run". With some much intersection of genres including hip-hop, rock, reggae, and jazz, it's sometimes difficult to pinpoint what exactly you're listening to. K-os does it all, and does it all well. From rapping on the album's opener "Electrik Heat" to crooning on the album's highlight (for me at least) "Highway Seven", he has proven he can hold his own and more in just about any form. This is a highly recommended cd for any fan of...MUSIC. If you like music at all, you should at least listen to this album. Some tracks might not be for you, but you never know until you try. With so much diversity, there's something for everyone on here. 5 stars out of 5, and if you haven't heard his previous releases, especially "Joyful Rebellion", be sure to check those out as well. You won't regret buying this cd from K-os.

Another fantastic album.......2007-02-22
I consider my taste in music "left of the mainstream". I love me some pop, rock, alternative, dance, you name it. I prefer to shy away from super-popular artists because I see the contrivance inherent within those songs. K-os has a realness to his music that transcends genre and is just recognizable as "good". I just bought this album yesterday, and have had a few listens through. I can tell that I will enjoy this more than Joyful Rebellion. Considering the explanation of my tastes, this should be easy to accept. I will admit that his personal emcee talents are better shown through his previous efforts (find his first album if you want the best example) but this album is far more suited to my tastes. At this time it is hard to say which songs are better than the rest because they really all sound fantastic. If albums like this are what 2007 have to offer, I am going to LOVE 2007.

This set contains the two CDs that, it must be acknowledged, just about started the Chant craze in 1994. The music was actually recorded in the 1970s and 1980s (this new set has been remastered and sounds better than the 1994-95 releases did) and was on sale in Spain and offered at the Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos for some time before it became "hot." Since then, hundreds of CDs of chant and similar music have appeared, many more polished then these, but perhaps these were so special because they weren't performances: they caught actual Monks in the act of praying, and the meditative quality is undeniably real. Whatever the case, this is music for reflection, calming down, re-fueling and getting away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life--which may be even more needed now than they were 10 years ago. Texts are not supplied and you won't need them; it's all about reverence and mood. Doing nothing but listening to this in 25-minute chunks will allow your breathing to slow and re-energize you. Each 55-minute CD will probably put you to sleep--and this isn't meant as a criticism. --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:

FANTASTIC!!.......2006-01-25
However, this complaint aside, I love the Anniversary Edition. Although the track sequence is different from the original Chant CD and I find myself expecting certain chants to follow others, I will in time get used to the differences.
Moving on, this is not complicated material. There is no polyphonic, raucous, symphonic accompaniment. There are no rowdy, raging guitar riffs from the likes of Pepper Keenan or Jeff Loomis. There are no ultra-funky looped drum beats, booming bass, or rapped socio-political venom from the likes of the Ice Cube or Public Enemy. There is neither a Cecilia Bartoli nor a BB King to sustain things by sheer virtuosity. There are only the exquisitely simple, melodic sounds of monks singing/chanting in Latin in a great, grand hall with nary a trace of echo to be heard. This is gorgeous, sublime, invigorating music to soothe the sores of the soul and heal the hardened heart. The raw honesty and utter conviction of the `performers' on these two discs drive these pieces home with a power that more practiced and polished performers dare not dream of. Even with no transcription or translation of the chants inside the booklet, this is music to be enjoyed by everyone.
My recommendation is to procure Chant: The Anniversary Edition immediately and be thankful that such simple and supremely powerful music exists to bring some light into our seemingly ever-darkening world.
Thanks for reading.

This sampler album of excerpts from seven other Anonymous 4 releases is a good introduction for anyone who is unacquainted with the A4's startlingly pure singing and virtually celestial blend. But if you fall under the spell of this outstanding a capella quartet, the present disc will become extraneous because you'll want to own the complete recordings from which it's drawn. If you prefer complete works to samplers, try taking the plunge with "An English Ladymass" or "On Yoolis Night." --Sarah Bryan MillerCustomer Reviews:

These four women are virtuoso female vocalists, hauntingly pure of voice. They perform music from centuries ago in the same type of setting that it was originally performed in, with stunning results. I'm generally not one for "religious" material (this is the first recording of this nature I've ever bought), but this music goes so far back in time that it sounds more primal than Christian overall.
A refreshing change when you're in the right mood, and something that can relax even you type A personalities out there (and you *know* who you are :) , I can suggest this one without reserve. You'll be adding a nice, quiet corner to your collection, and you'll probably wind up visiting it more than you ever imagined.

Hip-hop continues to grow up, expanding beyond the 'hood and outside of its American birthplace. Like France's IAM or Britain's Dizzee Rascal, this Canadian rapper puts a unique internationalist spin on contemporary rap. K-os is a skilled rhyme-slinger who openly loathes "bling rap" ("Emcee Murdah") and who harks back to rap's golden era on cuts like "B-Boy Stance," a James Brown breakbeat-fuelled number. However, like Andre 3000 and his "Hey Ya" pop affectations, K-os's strongest material might be the tunes that are the least hip-hop-inspired. Between the foot-tappin', finger-snappin' "Crabbuckit" (with a rhythmic backdrop that mimics Ray Charles's "Hit the Road Jack"), the reggae-pop mix of "Crucial," and the wily Michael Jackson impersonation of "Man I Used to Be," the wide array of musical reference points show rap's sonic possibilities. The ultramodern blend of frenzied turntable scratches and classical strings on "The Love Song" is reason enough to cop this. --Dalton HigginsCustomer Reviews:
America . . . we have a problem........2007-05-02
He is, hands down, one of the most talented artists making music today. His second album, "Joyful Rebellion", should be looked at as "Exhibit B", with his first, "Exit", being "Exhibit A". From front to back, "Joyful Rebellion" is an overall enjoyable listen. k-os' musical style ranges from rock to rap, to soul and back. The best part about it is that he's actually very good! You need this in your life.

Awesome!!!! 4 and half stars.......2006-05-30
K-OS is a breath of fresh air from the more 'popular' hip-hop artists. Distancing himself from the obscene lyrics and the 'gangsta' rapper image K-OS shows what being emcee is all about. Its not about having fancy cars, beautiful girls and dying in a blazing gunfight, its about making good music. And thats exactly what K-OS does without any of the ego stroking or negative stereotypes.
There are some songs which are little weak such as One Blood and Hallelujah but otherwise K-OS's lineup in Joyful Rebellion is air tight. Dirty Water, the product of his colusion with Sam Roberts (another great Canadian artist) is excellent. Other tracks that are exceptional are B-Boy Stance, Neutroniks, Emcee Murdah and Crucial.

With the Benzino-tarnished hip-hop landscape taking a critical beat-down in early 2003, K-Os's debut offers a smattering of hip-hope. With a vocal drone resembling Q-Tip or Magoo, and a Lauryn Hill-esque penchant for crooning and rapping fiery anti-Babylon rhymes over acoustic guitars ("Follow Me," "Heaven Only Knows"), K-Os's Exit is as nontraditional sounding as a contemporary rap long-player gets. The genre bending begins with the pop ballad "Call Me" and forges ahead with dubby roots reggae ("Superstar, Pt. 1") and catchy Brit-pop tunes ("Superstar, Pt. 2"). Hip-hop purists might find self-produced tracks like "The Anthem," "Freeze"--which utilizes an old Slick Rick drum pattern--or "Fantastique" slightly underproduced or unpolished. However, one gets the sense that the beats were intended to take a backseat to K-Os's provocative anti-bling-bling protest rhymes. This one's for hip-hop fans who like their lyrics left-of-center. --Dalton HigginsCustomer Reviews:

Mr. Versatility {5 Stars}.......2006-09-12
Also, there's a hidden track on the end of the album -- "Heaven Only Knows" (Remix)
There aren't really any flaws on this album. Well, "Higher" is okay, but I could understand why someone would regard it as skip material (even though I love it). Every song is good. Some will tell you that he can get kind of heavy handed with his message and that he lays it on thick (yes, he does), but if it's a message you agree with (anti-babylon rhetoric, smashing wack emcees, saving rap from the tyrants that are killing it, etc...), then it's pretty much a welcome message. I loved every bit of it. I can't really grade it according to hip hop standards because, well, there's a lot of everything else to be found here.
Exit is one of those albums that comes at you from every angle. R&B, hip hop, rock, reggae -- K-Os can do it all. Though he can become rather preachy from time to time, the overall good vibes from the album will make you forget about all that. I highly recommend making this one a collection piece.

My Favorites:
With the acoustic "Heaven Only Knows", K-os raps to a beat-less track. Just problems and things about him that heaven only know about.
With the reggae beat and booming bass in "Superstarr Part 1", K-os sings how someone got so low when they're a superstar.
Yet another guitar with a simple beat, K-os sings about needing "Patience" and soon understanding.
Going into the country vibe, K-os sings "Superstarr, Pt. 2" in the same context as part 1. This is more of a softer side of Kheaven.
With a house beat and simple piano chords, K-os raps and sings this track the truth about so many things in "Superstarr, Part Zero".
Kheaven is the beginning of hip-hop and the start of reality without talking about bling or who's ho that is and how big that is and without profanity. I could care less if you cuss or not but if you can bring a message in your music without cussin' and you're a rapper, that's when everyone grows up.
Other ear openers:
Call Me
Freeze
Higher
Masquerade
Heaven Only Knows (Remix)
Please get this album, it's the start of real hip-hop and certainly not the end.

"You must take a look at the new land," Os Mutantes singer Rita Lee softly proclaims on Everything Is Possible!'s English-language rewrite of Caetano Veloso's "Baby." The Brazilian psychedelic-rock pioneers were addressing a hoped-for American-British audience, but they could also have been singing to their own country's political establishment, which didn't take kindly to the Tropicalia era's fusion of Beatles and Hendrix influences with elements of bossa nova and samba. The result continues to reverberate more than three decades later in the work of Beck, Stereolab, and Cibo Matto, not to mention on late-'90s reissues such as this. Full of beauty, self-mocking good humor, and a command of varied styles that Lennon and McCartney would've envied, this enticing music is every bit as fresh as it must've sounded to South American swingers back in the day. --Rickey WrightAlbum Details

World of Os Mutantes.......2005-03-29
This collection brings together many of the band's best songs, such as the understated charm of "Panis et Circenses," the buzzing and swooning keyboard splendor of "Baby," and the cluttered catchiness of "Bat Macumbia." Rooted in Brazilian tropicalia, the music has quite a few quirks and twists, but surprisingly it never becomes too weird to alienate listeners.
Os Mutantes was initially formed by Arnaldo and Sergio Baptista, who later added Rita Lee and their brother Claudio. Though the band didn't last very long, they developed a reputation for twiddling with basic Brazilian pop -- while they stayed happy and accessable, they also added in distortion, feedback, and other sound experiments. It sounds fun, doesn't it?
And actually, it is a lot of fun. The trippy bossa nova/psychedelic rock/catchy pop isn't as heavy as it sounds, but instead goes for a light, playful, deeply stoned vibe. Eerie flutes and jungle drums -- as in the eerie "Premier Bonheur du Jour" -- get mixed in with solid guitar riffs and smooth keyboards. Those tradition instruments ground what could have been just another psychedelic band. It's gloriously catchy, and incredibly infectious.
The one flaw? Lesser-known albums like "Jardim Electro" and "Mutantes" are underrepresented in the selection of songs. Their first album, the self-titled "Os Mutantes" -- also probably their best ever -- is strongly emphasized. However, if you are looking for an excellent individual listen and not a representation of all their albums, then this is a very good find.
Few of the Os Mutantes albums are currently available in the U.S., which would make this the ideal introduction by default. But "World Psychedelic Classics 1" is a fairly good introduction to the band in its own right.

Ave, Os Mutantes.......2005-04-19
And their self-titled debut is probably the best work they ever did, without a single dud track. "Panis et Circenses" kicks things off with a horn solo, and then with a stretch of swooning acid-pop and some angelic-sounding voices. From there on, we get a fun, perky pop song laced with more horns, keyboards and wacky sound effects.
The stuff that follows is much in the same vein, from the buzzing and swooning keyboard splendor of "Baby," the downtempo warbles of "Le Premier Bonheur du Jour," and other songs full of Brazilian spunk, sonic clutter, sixties guitar solos, piano ripples, and catchy little songs that never get old. Rooted in Brazilian tropicalia, the music has quite a few quirks and twists, but surprisingly it never becomes too weird to alienate listeners.
Os Mutantes was initially formed by Arnaldo and Sergio Baptista, who later added Rita Lee and their brother Claudio. Though the band didn't last very long, they developed a reputation for twiddling with basic Brazilian pop -- while they stayed happy and accessable, they also added in distortion, feedback, non-catchy stretches of noise, and other sound experiments. It sounds fun, doesn't it?
And actually, it is a lot of fun. The trippy bossa nova/psychedelic rock/catchy pop isn't as heavy as it sounds, but instead goes for a light, playful, deeply stoned vibe. Eerie flutes, panpipes and jungle drums get mixed in with solid guitar riffs and smooth keyboards, acoustic and electric guitar harmonize, and piano is overlaid with train whistles.
Those traditional instruments ground what could have been just another psychedelic band. And the tropicalia gives it an earthy, unique edge that most psychedelica lacks. It's gloriously catchy, and incredibly infectious. The most typical aspect of it is the vocal harmonies -- other than that, there is simply nothing to compare this to.
There hasn't really been a band like Os Mutantes since, and until someone decides to revive that underrated sound, there probably won't be again. Mad, wild, crazy, and absolute bliss from beginning to end.
