Thanks to good marketing, good cover art, and good luck, this disc probably has sold more copies than most other recordings of Gregorian chant put together. It's often quipped that most of those discs have been listened to exactly once and put away--to the puzzlement of many musicians and critics, who point out that there are more beautiful, more varied performances by professional singers available. Yet the singing of these Spanish Benedictines has a special quality that probably explains this disc's popularity--a reverent serenity that no doubt stems from the fact that the monks are actually praying, not just performing. Granted, Chant can become a bit monotonous with repeated listening, but it really gives you the sense of devotion that has always been the purpose of "Gregorian" chant. If this recording (ahem) enchants you at first, wonderful. If you get bored with it later, don't give up--there has been an extraordinary variety of styles and sounds over the 1,500-year history of plainchant, so go exploring with Anonymous 4, Ensemble Gilles Binchois, Sequentia, or Ensemble Organum. You won't be sorry. --Matthew Westphal

The CD was received on time and in excellent condition. I use the CD in the evenings to slow me down and get me in a relaxed mood.

4 out of 5 stars Chant.......2007-03-09

It is a true to life portrail of the medieval prayer form.

Some things are ageless.

5 out of 5 stars PEACE FROM WITHIN.......2007-01-09

I can't understand most of the latin words in these chants but the spirituality, harmony and the "music" in the monks' voices are refreshing to the soul. I know that several monks sing but you basically hear one voice. I would suggest that a pocket size book with the translation of each chant should accompany each CD.

5 out of 5 stars Gregorian Chant.......2006-08-13

I purchased this item because one of my children has been going through the Tomatis method of auditory integration training to correct some auditory processing issues that affect his ability to communicate. The Gregorian Chant was recommended as a follow up because of its many and pure sound frequencies. After listening to different samples of the Chant, I picked the one sung by the Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos for its sound clarity. Also, it has been interesting to see the reaction of all my children. Two of them weep when they listen to the chant and the other one seems be soothed by it. As an adult, it is this soothing effect from the Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos that I find most fascinating.

EXCELLENT FOR RELAXING, MEDITATION, OR INTROSPECTION. WHEN I HAVE HAD A BAD DAY, I POP THIS IN ON MY WAY HOME FOR RELAXATION.

5 out of 5 stars Tough to categorize but..........2007-06-06

still amazing.

This is the canadian "rapper's" third studio release, and he increasingly becomes better with each release. On this trip, the entire album has a feel, whether its the somber "Highway Seven" or the rock-laden "Born To Run". With some much intersection of genres including hip-hop, rock, reggae, and jazz, it's sometimes difficult to pinpoint what exactly you're listening to. K-os does it all, and does it all well. From rapping on the album's opener "Electrik Heat" to crooning on the album's highlight (for me at least) "Highway Seven", he has proven he can hold his own and more in just about any form. This is a highly recommended cd for any fan of...MUSIC. If you like music at all, you should at least listen to this album. Some tracks might not be for you, but you never know until you try. With so much diversity, there's something for everyone on here. 5 stars out of 5, and if you haven't heard his previous releases, especially "Joyful Rebellion", be sure to check those out as well. You won't regret buying this cd from K-os.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting style.......2007-04-03

It reminds me of reggae style beach music. I like it a lot but you need to be in a certain mood to listen to it. Great for long road trips. It put my boyfriend in "stealth mode" as he called it - he was able to concentrate on driving while stil enjoying the K-Os.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite For 07' (So Far).......2007-03-29

I know it's still early in the year but this can easily be my favorite for the year. If you want straight hip hop you might want to look elsewhere but if you enjoy some experimenting of styles and flavor this is the album for you.Overall vibe is very nice on this album because it plays all the way through smoothly. I look forward for more great songs from this guy.

5 out of 5 stars Good start for 2007.......2007-02-27

I have been a K-Os fan since exit, and every album this man, puts out gets better, and better everytime, joyfull rebellon ws genius, now this one Atlantis, is just a masterpiece, i really can't call this Hip Hop album, becuase he ranges from pop, rock, soul, and much more, a lot of emccee from the U.S, can trully learn from this man, and the biggest plus for me is he does not curse, or use th n bomb, so anybody who is ready for a change and wanna hear something besides, the crap you here on the radio, pick up atlantis you will not be disapointed.

4 out of 5 stars Another fantastic album.......2007-02-22

K-os continues to define his style without the confines of "traditional" (as the mainstream populace have come to accept) hip-hop. His fusion of styles and genres is a little less unique since the Black Eyed Peas' Monkey Business album (which seemed to bring this funky, peppy style into the limelight) but k-os manages to exceed at the style where BEP simply made it popular.

I consider my taste in music "left of the mainstream". I love me some pop, rock, alternative, dance, you name it. I prefer to shy away from super-popular artists because I see the contrivance inherent within those songs. K-os has a realness to his music that transcends genre and is just recognizable as "good". I just bought this album yesterday, and have had a few listens through. I can tell that I will enjoy this more than Joyful Rebellion. Considering the explanation of my tastes, this should be easy to accept. I will admit that his personal emcee talents are better shown through his previous efforts (find his first album if you want the best example) but this album is far more suited to my tastes. At this time it is hard to say which songs are better than the rest because they really all sound fantastic. If albums like this are what 2007 have to offer, I am going to LOVE 2007.

This set contains the two CDs that, it must be acknowledged, just about started the Chant craze in 1994. The music was actually recorded in the 1970s and 1980s (this new set has been remastered and sounds better than the 1994-95 releases did) and was on sale in Spain and offered at the Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos for some time before it became "hot." Since then, hundreds of CDs of chant and similar music have appeared, many more polished then these, but perhaps these were so special because they weren't performances: they caught actual Monks in the act of praying, and the meditative quality is undeniably real. Whatever the case, this is music for reflection, calming down, re-fueling and getting away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life--which may be even more needed now than they were 10 years ago. Texts are not supplied and you won't need them; it's all about reverence and mood. Doing nothing but listening to this in 25-minute chunks will allow your breathing to slow and re-energize you. Each 55-minute CD will probably put you to sleep--and this isn't meant as a criticism. --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Superb relaxation.......2007-04-01

This is a wonderful compilation. I greatly enjoy listening to it when I'm working on painting or another activity where lower blood pressure is a must. Having two albums in one makes the deal even sweeter. If you alreaddy own Chant I and II, then there's no real value added, but with mine lost in a move, it was a great return of music I enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars What a recording.......2006-12-01

Mystic, eternal, and meditative is how I would
describe these chants, a most perfect gift
for Christmas. This reissue sounds even better
than the ones released in the mid 90's.
I would highly recommend this recording to anyone.
The only rule is sit down, or lay back and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!!.......2006-01-25

BUYERS BE WARNED - this set should not purchased in lieu of the two original Chant CDs but rather as a supplement to them. Because although both the Amazon.com editorial review and one of the two reviews available for the Anniversary Edition both indicate it is nothing more than a remastered version of the original two Chant releases from 1994, a thorough check of the track listings at Amazon.com (and at angelrecords.com) demonstrates that this is not the case. The sequence of tracks is completely different and there are numerous tracks that appear on one of the original Chant CDs but not on the Anniversary Edition and vice versa. The most complete is the first of the two original discs as all but two of its nineteen tracks appear on the Anniversary Edition. Chant II has less than half a dozen of its tracks appearing on the Anniversary Edition.

However, this complaint aside, I love the Anniversary Edition. Although the track sequence is different from the original Chant CD and I find myself expecting certain chants to follow others, I will in time get used to the differences.

Moving on, this is not complicated material. There is no polyphonic, raucous, symphonic accompaniment. There are no rowdy, raging guitar riffs from the likes of Pepper Keenan or Jeff Loomis. There are no ultra-funky looped drum beats, booming bass, or rapped socio-political venom from the likes of the Ice Cube or Public Enemy. There is neither a Cecilia Bartoli nor a BB King to sustain things by sheer virtuosity. There are only the exquisitely simple, melodic sounds of monks singing/chanting in Latin in a great, grand hall with nary a trace of echo to be heard. This is gorgeous, sublime, invigorating music to soothe the sores of the soul and heal the hardened heart. The raw honesty and utter conviction of the `performers' on these two discs drive these pieces home with a power that more practiced and polished performers dare not dream of. Even with no transcription or translation of the chants inside the booklet, this is music to be enjoyed by everyone.

My recommendation is to procure Chant: The Anniversary Edition immediately and be thankful that such simple and supremely powerful music exists to bring some light into our seemingly ever-darkening world.

Thanks for reading.

5 out of 5 stars Please ignore the other review on this product!.......2005-07-21

The other reviewer obviously does not realize that this is a re-release of both Chant I and Chant II. They have also been remastered. I highly recommend purchasing this 2-CD set because the quality is better than the originals, and the price is usually better than buying the first two separately. I wouldn't be without this in my music collection. Please do no let the ignorance of others keep you from experiencing this beautiful, ethereal music.

This sampler album of excerpts from seven other Anonymous 4 releases is a good introduction for anyone who is unacquainted with the A4's startlingly pure singing and virtually celestial blend. But if you fall under the spell of this outstanding a capella quartet, the present disc will become extraneous because you'll want to own the complete recordings from which it's drawn. If you prefer complete works to samplers, try taking the plunge with "An English Ladymass" or "On Yoolis Night." --Sarah Bryan Miller

5 out of 5 stars An aural treat for lovers of vocal music.......2007-04-14

If you love vocal music these gals are fabulous! This is a best of album, which is always good as an introduction to a new artist. It gives you a taste of their various albums, so you can go ahead and pursue the ones you like. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting.......2007-01-10

If you enjoy music that takes you to a different time and place, you will get lost in time with this beautiful work.

5 out of 5 stars If Angels Ever Recorded A CD.......2006-03-16

Four female voices have never blended together so perfectly and beautifully as do those of the 'Anonymous 4.' Their CD titled, 'Portrait' contains a selection of tracks from seven other previous CD's, kind of a "Best Of" you might say.

If angels ever came down from heaven to record a CD this is what they would sound like.

Harmonious, Celestial, Purifying and Eternal.

5 out of 5 stars another exquisite performance.......2006-02-27

This amazing quartette is so talented. The Christmas cd reminds me of Christmas 50 years ago in rural England where I grew up. It contains the only rendition of The Holly and the Ivy I have heard that actually does the carol justice.

5 out of 5 stars Anonymous, but in no way generic.......2001-02-04

I learned about this quartet though a review in Stereophile magazine. Although they don't publish a lot of reviews, I've had exceptionally good luck with their past picks and have been able to branch out successfully in new musical directions as a result.

These four women are virtuoso female vocalists, hauntingly pure of voice. They perform music from centuries ago in the same type of setting that it was originally performed in, with stunning results. I'm generally not one for "religious" material (this is the first recording of this nature I've ever bought), but this music goes so far back in time that it sounds more primal than Christian overall.

A refreshing change when you're in the right mood, and something that can relax even you type A personalities out there (and you *know* who you are :) , I can suggest this one without reserve. Hip-hop continues to grow up, expanding beyond the 'hood and outside of its American birthplace. Like France's IAM or Britain's Dizzee Rascal, this Canadian rapper puts a unique internationalist spin on contemporary rap. K-os is a skilled rhyme-slinger who openly loathes "bling rap" ("Emcee Murdah") and who harks back to rap's golden era on cuts like "B-Boy Stance," a James Brown breakbeat-fuelled number. However, like Andre 3000 and his "Hey Ya" pop affectations, K-os's strongest material might be the tunes that are the least hip-hop-inspired. Between the foot-tappin', finger-snappin' "Crabbuckit" (with a rhythmic backdrop that mimics Ray Charles's "Hit the Road Jack"), the reggae-pop mix of "Crucial," and the wily Michael Jackson impersonation of "Man I Used to Be," the wide array of musical reference points show rap's sonic possibilities. The ultramodern blend of frenzied turntable scratches and classical strings on "The Love Song" is reason enough to cop this. --Dalton Higgins

5 out of 5 stars America . . . we have a problem........2007-05-02

Just north of the U.S. border is a little piece of magic called Canada. It's a place many of us here in the States never bother to think about. That must be why we are missing out on so much that Canada has to offer. The best thing Canada has to offer (besides Mellyssa Ford, Deborah Cox and Tamia) is the music of k-os.

He is, hands down, one of the most talented artists making music today. His second album, "Joyful Rebellion", should be looked at as "Exhibit B", with his first, "Exit", being "Exhibit A". From front to back, "Joyful Rebellion" is an overall enjoyable listen. k-os' musical style ranges from rock to rap, to soul and back. The best part about it is that he's actually very good! You need this in your life.

5 out of 5 stars Lightning strikes twice.......2007-03-30

With Joyful Rebellion, K-Os has unleashed another near flawless album. The production on Joyful Rebellion is a slight improvement over K-Os's previous album, Exit, without sounding overproduced. My favorite tracks are Emcee Murdah, Crabbuckit, The Love Song, and Dirty Water. Do yourself a favor and pick up this album as soon as possible. But be forewarned: You won't look at rap music the same anymore!

4 out of 5 stars talented hip hop artist for once.......2006-08-05

k-os was always keeping it real. And when I first heard man I used to be I also thought of michael jackson(and marvin gaye) and thought I was the only one but I guess I wasn't after all. It's an awesome song and whenever it's on the radio we turn it up real loud. Keep doing your thing k-os Canada loves you!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!! 4 and half stars.......2006-05-30

When I heard Man I Used To Be and Crabbuckit on the radio I liked them a lot so I figured I would buy the album and find out just how good K-OS was. When I first listened to the album I was disappointed because it was not what I expected, but I figured I would give it a chance and play it through a couple times. Three or four reruns later I couldn't play it enough. And from then on my addiction to the K-OS and his Joyful Rebellion just kept on growing.

K-OS is a breath of fresh air from the more 'popular' hip-hop artists. Distancing himself from the obscene lyrics and the 'gangsta' rapper image K-OS shows what being emcee is all about. Its not about having fancy cars, beautiful girls and dying in a blazing gunfight, its about making good music. And thats exactly what K-OS does without any of the ego stroking or negative stereotypes.

There are some songs which are little weak such as One Blood and Hallelujah but otherwise K-OS's lineup in Joyful Rebellion is air tight. Dirty Water, the product of his colusion with Sam Roberts (another great Canadian artist) is excellent. Other tracks that are exceptional are B-Boy Stance, Neutroniks, Emcee Murdah and Crucial.

4 out of 5 stars close, but...........2006-04-28

K-Os is unbelievably talented. There is no single bad song in Joyful rebellion. There are straight up hip hop songs and soulful ballads like "superstar". This album is lyrically and musically perfect but the problem is that it has no real depth. I feel like all the songs could be about anything. He lyrically and musically surpasses Mos Def but his words are pop song words and don't have the depth of true hip hop liek Mos Def has. Still, overall, I think this is an album you have to have. I also think we can expect better from K-Os in the future. Oh, and by the way, for all the reviewers comparing K-Os to Wyclef: K-Os makes Wyclef look like a nursery school rapper.

With the Benzino-tarnished hip-hop landscape taking a critical beat-down in early 2003, K-Os's debut offers a smattering of hip-hope. With a vocal drone resembling Q-Tip or Magoo, and a Lauryn Hill-esque penchant for crooning and rapping fiery anti-Babylon rhymes over acoustic guitars ("Follow Me," "Heaven Only Knows"), K-Os's Exit is as nontraditional sounding as a contemporary rap long-player gets. The genre bending begins with the pop ballad "Call Me" and forges ahead with dubby roots reggae ("Superstar, Pt. 1") and catchy Brit-pop tunes ("Superstar, Pt. 2"). Hip-hop purists might find self-produced tracks like "The Anthem," "Freeze"--which utilizes an old Slick Rick drum pattern--or "Fantastique" slightly underproduced or unpolished. However, one gets the sense that the beats were intended to take a backseat to K-Os's provocative anti-bling-bling protest rhymes. This one's for hip-hop fans who like their lyrics left-of-center. --Dalton Higgins

5 out of 5 stars Finally, something different.......2007-03-30

K-Os brings something different to the rap music scene with his freshman album, Exit. If you enjoy rap but are tired of the monotony, commercialism, and violence that permeate commercial/popular rap, give K-Os's work a listen. He successfully blends rap, acoustic, piano, soul, dance, and other genres of music into a uniquely perfect mixture.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Versatility {5 Stars}.......2006-09-12

A lot of people sleep on K-Os here in the US because, well, he's Canadian. I'm not well learned when it comes to Canadian rappers (I have albums from Kardinal Offishal, Choclair, The Rascalz, Swollen Members, and K-Os...that's about it). They really should get more shine over here though. It's pretty sad because everything I've heard from Canada so far is pretty good. Simply put, K-Os is a one man wrecking machine when it comes to making music. He does just about everything and he does it well. Whether he's rockin' out (Superstarr Pt. 2), scolding wack emcees (Freeze), trying to save rap (The Anthem), jammin' reggae style (Superstarr Pt. 1), or showing off his singing talents (Patience, Call Me), K-Os shows the world that he's an artist that derserves the respect and attention that he gets.

Also, there's a hidden track on the end of the album -- "Heaven Only Knows" (Remix)

There aren't really any flaws on this album. Well, "Higher" is okay, but I could understand why someone would regard it as skip material (even though I love it). Every song is good. Some will tell you that he can get kind of heavy handed with his message and that he lays it on thick (yes, he does), but if it's a message you agree with (anti-babylon rhetoric, smashing wack emcees, saving rap from the tyrants that are killing it, etc...), then it's pretty much a welcome message. I loved every bit of it. I can't really grade it according to hip hop standards because, well, there's a lot of everything else to be found here.

Exit is one of those albums that comes at you from every angle. R&B, hip hop, rock, reggae -- K-Os can do it all. Though he can become rather preachy from time to time, the overall good vibes from the album will make you forget about all that. I highly recommend making this one a collection piece.

Standout Tracks: Superstarr Pt. Zero, Follow Me, Heaven Only Knows, Heaven Only Knows [Remix], Freeze (My Favorite), Neutroniks, Fantastique, Superstarr Pt. 1, The Anthem, Masquerade, Superstarr Pt. 2, and Call Me

Those are the key words to describe this album. His talents are versatile; skilled to be an MC and a singer as well. Such skills are hard to find. Lyrics are powerful and a positive influence towards the hip hop generation. He speaks of truth. Beats are very catchy and dope. You gotta get this album!

5 out of 5 stars PERFECTION!.......2005-01-26

I'm not a big fan of rap, but hip-hop is another thing. K-os brings every aspect of music. He's an eclectic that can rap to anything.

My Favorites:
With the acoustic "Heaven Only Knows", K-os raps to a beat-less track. Just problems and things about him that heaven only know about.

With the reggae beat and booming bass in "Superstarr Part 1", K-os sings how someone got so low when they're a superstar.

Yet another guitar with a simple beat, K-os sings about needing "Patience" and soon understanding.

Going into the country vibe, K-os sings "Superstarr, Pt. 2" in the same context as part 1. This is more of a softer side of Kheaven.

With a house beat and simple piano chords, K-os raps and sings this track the truth about so many things in "Superstarr, Part Zero".

Kheaven is the beginning of hip-hop and the start of reality without talking about bling or who's ho that is and how big that is and without profanity. I could care less if you cuss or not but if you can bring a message in your music without cussin' and you're a rapper, that's when everyone grows up.

Other ear openers:
Call Me
Freeze
Higher
Masquerade
Heaven Only Knows (Remix)

Please get this album, it's the start of real hip-hop and certainly not the end.

"You must take a look at the new land," Os Mutantes singer Rita Lee softly proclaims on Everything Is Possible!'s English-language rewrite of Caetano Veloso's "Baby." The Brazilian psychedelic-rock pioneers were addressing a hoped-for American-British audience, but they could also have been singing to their own country's political establishment, which didn't take kindly to the Tropicalia era's fusion of Beatles and Hendrix influences with elements of bossa nova and samba. The result continues to reverberate more than three decades later in the work of Beck, Stereolab, and Cibo Matto, not to mention on late-'90s reissues such as this. Full of beauty, self-mocking good humor, and a command of varied styles that Lennon and McCartney would've envied, this enticing music is every bit as fresh as it must've sounded to South American swingers back in the day. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars this is great stuff.......2007-02-07

for those who are not familiar with the music of Os Mutantes, this is a great CD to get, it is a "best of" compiliation. Combining elements of psychedelia, samba, bossa nova, and pop music, it all blends together very well. A great CD to listen to whle relaing a the end of the day.

4 out of 5 stars Trying to do the impossible.......2005-11-02

I have to give this collection 4 stars because it is the only easy way to get ahold of any Os Mutantes material. That being said, many of the most tripped out songs of Os Mutantes are left off of this collection, including Rita Lee, Top Top, Nao va se perder por ai, etc. Those who are looking for a good quick introduction to how great the music made in Brazil in the 70s are could use this as a good start. But then they should really get ahold of their albums, including Mutantes, Os Mutantes, and Jardim Electrico.

4 out of 5 stars World of Os Mutantes.......2005-03-29

It takes a connoisseur of psychedelic rock and pop to know of (drumroll please) Os Mutantes. This short-lived Brazilian band made some of the most memorable psychedelic pop of the 1960s -- which is really saying something. Some of their best work is compiled in "World Psyschedelic Classics 1," although there are some glaring omissions.

This collection brings together many of the band's best songs, such as the understated charm of "Panis et Circenses," the buzzing and swooning keyboard splendor of "Baby," and the cluttered catchiness of "Bat Macumbia." Rooted in Brazilian tropicalia, the music has quite a few quirks and twists, but surprisingly it never becomes too weird to alienate listeners.

Os Mutantes was initially formed by Arnaldo and Sergio Baptista, who later added Rita Lee and their brother Claudio. Though the band didn't last very long, they developed a reputation for twiddling with basic Brazilian pop -- while they stayed happy and accessable, they also added in distortion, feedback, and other sound experiments. It sounds fun, doesn't it?

And actually, it is a lot of fun. The trippy bossa nova/psychedelic rock/catchy pop isn't as heavy as it sounds, but instead goes for a light, playful, deeply stoned vibe. Eerie flutes and jungle drums -- as in the eerie "Premier Bonheur du Jour" -- get mixed in with solid guitar riffs and smooth keyboards. Those tradition instruments ground what could have been just another psychedelic band. It's gloriously catchy, and incredibly infectious.

The one flaw? Lesser-known albums like "Jardim Electro" and "Mutantes" are underrepresented in the selection of songs. Their first album, the self-titled "Os Mutantes" -- also probably their best ever -- is strongly emphasized. However, if you are looking for an excellent individual listen and not a representation of all their albums, then this is a very good find.

Few of the Os Mutantes albums are currently available in the U.S., which would make this the ideal introduction by default. But "World Psychedelic Classics 1" is a fairly good introduction to the band in its own right.

5 out of 5 stars Damn fine on some tracks. Santana meets Electric Prunes........2007-01-12

Really enjoyed this album, the critics were right, transcends language barriers. The licks and psychedelic feel grooved to the bone. Most songs slow or poppy but so where some songs on Sgt. Pepper. (Track #2 A Minha Menina) and (#7 Bat Macumba) sear the brain with waves and (#5 Baby) with the sultry voice against the electric guitar. (#11 Ave, Genghis Khan) is good finish. I'd recommend it, leaves me wanting more from this group.

5 out of 5 stars An eclectic classic.......2006-08-01

There was lots of experimentation used in this album, some would say to the point of recklessness, but from the abrupt song changes to the blistering fuzzed-out guitar laid on top of tropicalia tracks, it all works, and makes for a truly amazing sounding album. Early on, Os Mutantes put out sounds ranging from tropicalia to bright 60s pop to tender ballads to blistering guitar distortion and feedback, sometimes all in the same song. The first 30 seconds of the first song of the album alone consists of fanfare, soft vocal harmonies, and bright pop meloldies with racing trumpets in the background. Even though I don't speak a word of Portuguese, I thoroughly enjoyed this album, and I got into this album more than I ever got into any album.

5 out of 5 stars Ave, Os Mutantes.......2005-04-19

It takes a connoisseur of psychedelic rock and pop to know of (drumroll please) Os Mutantes. This short-lived Brazilian band made some of the most memorable psychedelic pop of the 1960s -- which is really saying something, given the era that they thrived in. Call it psychetropicalia.

And their self-titled debut is probably the best work they ever did, without a single dud track. "Panis et Circenses" kicks things off with a horn solo, and then with a stretch of swooning acid-pop and some angelic-sounding voices. From there on, we get a fun, perky pop song laced with more horns, keyboards and wacky sound effects.

The stuff that follows is much in the same vein, from the buzzing and swooning keyboard splendor of "Baby," the downtempo warbles of "Le Premier Bonheur du Jour," and other songs full of Brazilian spunk, sonic clutter, sixties guitar solos, piano ripples, and catchy little songs that never get old. Rooted in Brazilian tropicalia, the music has quite a few quirks and twists, but surprisingly it never becomes too weird to alienate listeners.

Os Mutantes was initially formed by Arnaldo and Sergio Baptista, who later added Rita Lee and their brother Claudio. Though the band didn't last very long, they developed a reputation for twiddling with basic Brazilian pop -- while they stayed happy and accessable, they also added in distortion, feedback, non-catchy stretches of noise, and other sound experiments. It sounds fun, doesn't it?

And actually, it is a lot of fun. The trippy bossa nova/psychedelic rock/catchy pop isn't as heavy as it sounds, but instead goes for a light, playful, deeply stoned vibe. Eerie flutes, panpipes and jungle drums get mixed in with solid guitar riffs and smooth keyboards, acoustic and electric guitar harmonize, and piano is overlaid with train whistles.

Those traditional instruments ground what could have been just another psychedelic band. And the tropicalia gives it an earthy, unique edge that most psychedelica lacks. It's gloriously catchy, and incredibly infectious. The most typical aspect of it is the vocal harmonies -- other than that, there is simply nothing to compare this to.

There hasn't really been a band like Os Mutantes since, and until someone decides to revive that underrated sound, there probably won't be again. Mad, wild, crazy, and absolute bliss from beginning to end.
