Great album except for the Title Track.......2000-05-02

The third man theme orchestration on the first track is simply awful (bad enough to be humorous)! The rest of the CD is delightful with just zither with accordian accompanyment. There might be other instruments, but I'm not sure. Karras used a zither that was especially built for him which produced a very full and rather aggressive sound. He also repeatedly plucked the strings in many songs to produce a sustaining tone. I find that style of playing very interesting. "The Third Man" is one of my favorite movies. The opening credit showing Karras' hands playing the zither is, in my opinion, one of the great graphic achievements of that era. Most of the album is made-up of various themes from Strauss and operetta strung together. Each track may contain 3-5 themes. My favorite theme is #2 on track 21. The good original analog recording is nicely transferred to digital with little noise and appropriate dynamic range. Listening to this recording is like taking a quick trip to one of my favorite cities--Vienna!

In 1994 Teldec released a CD containing several of these recordings, made originally in Berlin between 1935 and 1940. It was decidedly short measure at 53 minutes, whereas this one is extremely generous. Of particular interest, amongst the Mozart items recorded with Dr Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt conducting, is a version of "Il mio tesoro" from "Don Giovanni", sung in German, in which Peter Anders not only sings the notorious seven-bar bridging phrase before the reprise in one breath but he also has enough breath to begin the reprise itself before inhaling. Surely a record of a record!

Of the many notable German tenors of the C20th, Peter Anders (1908-1954) had arguably the most naturally beautiful voice. Described as "the finest lyric tenor in the German tongue" by one authority, he was also described by Rudolf Bing, general manager of the New York Met, as the owner of "one of the most beautiful voices I know". Listen to his singing of "Im Mohrenland" from Mozart's "Die Entführung". Hear how German can sound even more beautiful in the throat of an exceptional singer than Italian does.

Anders' special timbre and clear enunciation were much admired by the young Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. The latter singer wrote in his autobiography of the occasion in the early 1950s when he received a congratulatory telephone call from Peter Anders, and instantly recognised the voice that was speaking to him. Sadly, it was soon after this that Peter Anders was killed in a car crash, speeding to meet the requirements of a busy music performing schedule.

This CD represents the best memento of Peter Anders currently on the market. The tracks date from the years when his voice was fluent, fresh, forward and most mellifluous. Some of the troubled, strained singing of his later years often produced aural discomfort, but everything here will delight you.
