4 out of 5 stars Wrongs righted.......2007-05-27

There have been compilations before of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, the band he formed after leaving John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, but this latest one puts right most of the wrongs and omissions of those.
Everything you expect is here including Oh Well Parts 1 & 2 in its full 9 minute glory and without fading out in the middle, where you had to turn over the single, as previous collected versions had; and the previously unreleased US Version of Need Your Love So Bad, which is a superb extended six minute piece, with strings arranged by Mickey Baker (who played guitar on Little Willie John's original). Stop Messin' Round was on the flipside of Need Your Love So Bad, but it is here in the slighter shorter version used on the album Mr. Wonderful.
The towering magnificence of The Green Manalishi is also re-established by its inclusion. The compilation ends with a token track by Chicken Shack, because of Christine McVie's involvement with the band, and the then-recent hit remix of Albatross by Chris Coco, both of which I could have done without in this particular context, perhaps replaced by their first single, Rambling Pony/I Believe My Time Ain't Long.

International pressing. 'Super Extra Gravity' was produced by Tore Johansson who worked with Franz Ferdinand & previously with The Cardigans on 'Gran Turismo'. Aside from the single 'I Need Some Fine Wine...', other highlights include the sparse album opener 'Losing A Friend', 'In The Round', 'Good Morning Joan' featuring a wall of guitars and the sad and beautiful 'Don't Blame Your Daughter (Diamonds)'. Every listen of the new record reveals another gem - The Cardigans have succeeded in their aim: to make a beautifully deranged album that never ceases to surprise the listener. 11 tracks in all. Universal. 2005.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe a sappy review, but I'm willing to risk it..........2006-12-16

The Cardigans are incredibly creative, innovative, and completely fearless in making exactly the kind of album they want to make- a trait difficult to come by these days.

They are, in fact, so good that it's impossible to put into words how moving their music is, particularly with the release of Long Gone Before Daylight and Super Extra Gravity (each of which still give me shivers).

Everything about SEG is amazing- the music, the vocals, the lyrics, the power, the emotion, the rock and roll (!).

It kills me that The Cardigans have had to suffer the pop culture maiming they've received in America. People just don't know how much is out there by them, and that Lovefool is not the keystone of the kind of music they make. If you were ever interested in The Cardigans, I urge you to look into the band more deeply and check out what they have to offer.

Even though I love all the songs on SEG, I have to say that it took a bit more effort to fall into And Then You Kissed Me II and Losing A Friend, but now that I know the album, I have to say that it all dovetails wonderfully into three little song pockets.

The first four songs are banded together into something akin to a roller coaster ride. Losing A Friend starts slow, but climbs into a peak before Godspell "whiplashes you around and 'round" in the words of Nina.
Drip Drop Teardrop picks up at a lower velocity than Godspell, but leaves you feeling content and rounded-out with Overload.

The next little group gives you the perfect kind of musical high (and is my favorite segment), with Fine Wine (abridged title) being the perfect pick-up from Overload. It rocks, and to be quite honest, I think that after hearing that song, anyone would want to take commands from Nina Persson...
Enter the gorgeous downshift to Don't Blame Your Daughter (Diamonds), where Nina's voice takes on the sort of softness that one can only dream about hearing.
Ending on the gliding feeling of a warm crescendo, you're then swept into the rock-y ethereal heights with Little Black Cloud (her vibrato alone is worth the price of the album, as silly as that sounds).

The last little group of four gives you a nice comedown from LBC into In the Round, which some fans have actually denounced as not worth being on the album.
I think the song is worth its steady heartbeat because it is the perfect launch for Holy Love, which blasts off like a rocket and doesn't quit until you hit the end of Good Morning Joan- which is one of those songs that sounds completely effortless, but certainly does its share of the heavy lifting.
Then the quietly rolling And Then You Kissed Me II. The lyrics in this song are cruelly beautiful, and its small, compact, but potent phrases are bound to stick in your head.

You will not be disappointed to own this album, and if you are, then you aren't listening correctly.

5 out of 5 stars Rather impressed.......2006-10-25

I first heard songs from Life when I lived in Japan in the mid-90's. It was so wierd to hear "Carnival" when the music that was popular back then was the end of Grunge and the beginning of the ska wave that lead into pop-punk and this other nonsense that it popular now. This was an album that was so light and airy and upbeat, and fun, with no pretension of being something that it was not. And yet it was super innovative, because nobody else was making music that sounded anything like this. I was of course instantly hooked.

Needeless to say, I am willing to give the Cardigans a chance every single time they release an album. Their albums represent an evolution away from what made them popular. "Gran Turismo" was a radical departure, and I dug that. "Long Gone Before Daylight" was really pretty bad, in my opinion. I felt catatonic listening to it. I was pretty disappointed. But, you know, one cannot stay away from something like the Cardigans, and when I heard they released a new record, I was all over it.

"Super Extra Gravity" (should have been the title of the last album) is a great rock and roll album. This record would have fit in with the sound of the mid-90's when they were making lounge music. It is reminicent of the best of the Breeders or Veruca Salt, though, of course, the musicians in the Cardigans are much more talented than those mid-90's bands.

The album is a rollercoaster ride, with a good ballance of more upbeat tunes, and slower, darker tunes. The guitar work is great, and the production is polished. But there are some suprises in the structures of the songs themselves. What one expects from a song like "Holy Love" is altered by the last chorus, as the Cardigans experiment with range and dissonance. It's not too far out (in a way that the Sonic Youth were far out) but it just enough to add a new dimension of interest to the song.

The draw for most to the Cardigans is the voice of the singer, Nina Persson. Long gone are the delicate tones of sticky sweetness that she is originally famous for. On this record she gains some gravel, and many times sings not beyond her range, but at the very edges of it. It underscores the rock element of the record to the nth degree.

All in all great production values, innovative stylings, and a relatively coherent set list makes this album a really great listen, very enjoyable for playing while you are engaged in some activity. Enjoy it with a friend. "Super Extra Gravity" is a very impressive record from one of my favorite bands.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Album From A Superlative Band.......2006-08-13

The Cardigans are my favorite band, and considering the quantity of music I listen to, that's a heavy compliment. I got hooked when I happened hear their "My Favorite Game" in the intro to Gran Turismo. I'm one of the fans, however, that prefers their later albums to their earlier work. Up until Super Extra Gravity, my favorite album was Long Gone Before Daylight, and I also found myself listening to Gran Turismo a good deal. I also like First Band on the Moon and Life, but not only do I prefer their later style- I think they've become more inventive and expressive especially in their last 2-3 albums.

Either way, the lead singer, Nina Persson, has a truly unique, emotive voice and all of their albums have that listenable quality where one songs manages to sound different from the next.

I had high expectations for Super Extra Gravity, and they were met. People are right to say that every Cardigans album sounds different, but with Nina's voice as a constant, this variability is a strength. Super Extra Gravity is rougher and rockier than LGBD, but I like it just as much. I especially like "Don't Blame Your Daughter" and "I Need Some Fine Wine...And You Need To Be Nicer", and "And Then You Kissed Me II". The entire album, however, is fantastic, clever, and holds some nice surprises for Cardigans fans, especially.

For new listeners, I recommend starting at Gran Turismo- it's very accessible, and I dare say that if you don't like that album, you aren't going to like the Cardigans. Go back to their earlier albums only once you're addicted to Nina Persson's voice (shouldn't take long). It's also worthy to note that Nina Persson released a great solo album under the title "A Camp"- not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars They never cease to impress me........2006-08-03

Every one of the Cardigans' albums is quite unique, so if you are looking for a part 2 of a previous album, this is not it. This is by far my favorite of their albums. People tend to call them pop, but this is not your vanilla radio pop, folks.

Nina Perrson has one of the most beautiful voices in music. With her, it's not the range, but the tone. It is unique and pure.

This album does not contain a single consistency like the others do. Many of the songs are edgy and fierce, some are bouncy, and others are slow and dreamlike. Most are moving and enjoyable. The only songs I did not take to were Good Morning Joan and In the Round. Favorites are Godspell and I Need Some Fine Wine...

If you are new to the Cardigans, I think this is a great album to start with. It is very accessible and not as solemn or quirky as their others (which are also great). I completely recommend this album, I doubt you will feel like you wasted your money but just to be safe, I always say to listen to a sample first.
I hope this album gets its due credit; the Cardigans are way underrated.

4 out of 5 stars SEG is good but it's not LGBD.......2006-07-03

Super Extra Gravity is a great rock 'n roll album. I was so enamored by their melancholic, lush, previous album "Long Gone Before Daylight" that I had to get this album as soon as it came out in Europe. This album rather cleverly contains a sequel to the song "And Then You Kissed Me." I definitely enjoy the songs on this album. But because the songs are so intense and rock-based, I wouldn't say the album as a full listen through is entirely enjoyable. My favorite songs off this album are probably In the Round and Overload.

There is a powerful-sounding song called Godspell, which is a song about religion being an opiate for the masses, but after listening to the lyrics, I came to the conclusion that they are rather nonsensical and the message sounds more whiny than astute.

The album is decidedly brash and brave and each song has a unique sound, but I miss the vulnerability of Long Gone Before Daylight. I thought it deserved 4 stars, because I am not usually a person who likes harsher sounding rock 'n roll, and this album was more enjoyable for me than most would be in that genre. Not all of the songs are rock per se, but the album does have an edgy rock feeling throughout.

5 out of 5 stars Great live record........2007-07-07

This is a grate concert from Peter Gabriel. In my opinion his best live record so far. I recommended it to anyone who if familiar with and like Peter Gabriel early recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Great live album from Peter.......2007-03-18

The sound of this double live cd is amazing, of course, it has been enhanced in studio but the "live" feeling of beeing there is preserved.
Many songs are far better in their live version on this cd when compared to the studio ones. To name a few, "The Family Snapshot", "D.I.Y", "The Family and the fishing net", "San Jacinto", "Solsbury Hill" and "Hundrum"
The voice is incredible and the sound just shake everything in the house.
Great live performance to remember this magic concert for the Security Tour.

5 out of 5 stars The Great Homily.......2007-03-11

This album is the pinnacle of live albums in the prog rock genre.
This work is the work that all live- recording since, compare themselves to.
Gabriel along with old school peers like Bowie were and still are masters of the Live-performance. And the new breed of masters, like Tool, learned it all here.

3 out of 5 stars An intriguing but often bland live album.......2006-10-21

So far, Peter Gabriel has released two live albums. The first is PLAYS LIVE, which features songs from Gabriel's first four albums (all of which were self-titled, though they have all been given frequently-used nicknames: CAR, SCRATCH, MELT, and SECURITY). The second is SECRET WORLD LIVE, which features songs from Gabriel's fifth and sixth albums, SO and US, as well as a few tunes from other Gabriel recordings. PLAYS LIVE was recorded in 1982 during the SECURITY tour, and released the following year. After the live recording, Gabriel took the recordings into his studio and tweaked them a little. Is this irritating? A little, but it seems more unnecessary than irritating. (At least Gabriel freely admits to tweaking the tunes in the CD booklet.) Regardless of the tweaking, PLAYS LIVE is a lively album that presents some very interesting - and occasionally superior - performances of Gabriel faves.

None of the live performances are bad, though "Solsbury Hill" does lose a lot of its strength when infused with synthesizers. Most of them are quite good, and a few are superior to their studio originals. One such song is "Intruder". The live version adds a little weirdness to the tune, but takes out much of the chillyness from the studio version; still, the PLAYS LIVE version is probably the best. Also, the live version of "The Family And The Fishing Net" is considerably better than the studio version.

Inexplicably, the rest of the songs lose much of their power when performed live. The only other song that really sticks out is "I Go Swimming", available exclusively on this CD. "I Go Swimming" is one of Gabriel's most fun songs and possibly one of his best. What really keeps PLAYS LIVE going is the interesting arrangements of the Gabriel faves - different instruments, new instrumental sections, lyrics sung differently, etc. Still, none are really knockouts, save for the aforementioned tunes.

If you're a big-time Gabriel fan, you'll want to check out this CD. Otherwise, spend your money purchasing his studio albums. PLAYS LIVE is consistently intriguing, but it often feels bland and rarely excites. (Steer clear of the HIGHLIGHTS version, released in 2002 as part of the remastered Gabriel catalogue. The HIGHLIGHTS version deletes six of the album's tracks, most of which were among the best on the album.)

5 out of 5 stars Uplifting and disturbing.......2005-06-10

This live CD by Peter Gabrial is quite amazing. It is a collection of his very best performances from this tour. The songs are all highly spiritual yet sometimes dark in tone. That is the genius of this collection. If you want to be inspired in a new way I highly recommend this CD. It is uplifting and disturbing at at the same time.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars if you were going to leave just one PM album out of your collection..........2006-06-16

this one would be it. i give it 2 stars because i believe that there are some flashes of lyrical and sonic brilliance here, but they fade pretty quickly. i'm wondering where the wheels came off of this album during production -- the quality of the recording is great, peter's voice is amazing, but i'm confused by the patchy and irregular instumental arrangements and the lack of enthusiasm and continuity. please, may the recording contract luck be better with peter next time... and perhaps on the next one we'll have some turkish musicians? ... maybe even playing unplugged? i hope so.

3 out of 5 stars It's not his best........2006-03-31

I would love to spend pages gushing about how wonderful Peter Murphy is, why I think he's so important to music, and detailing what I think are his best works that every one should own. But no, I think I'll spare you that. Simply put, this album is not his best work. There are one or two good tracks and several mediocre tracks. If you don't already own it, buy Dust. Dust is not that old (2002), and it is a great album from start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars Peter forever.......2006-03-01

Saw him play in Mexico City. Same energy, everyday sings better. Forever Peter.

4 out of 5 stars Beauty in the eye of the beholder..........2005-12-20

Peter Murphy has always been a lovely one to behold and his voice melts me. 'Idle Flow' makes me cry but then it also makes me smile through the tears. Why does he do this to me? It makes me drink too much eggnog! I recommend this cd if you are or have ever been a fan of Peter John Joseph Murphy. *****

1 out of 5 stars Ooof........2005-12-01

A huge disappointment. Though a fan of most of Murphy's music, I'm no slavish devotee and I'm open to changes of direction. My thoughts: This album lacks genuine enthusiasm. is uninspiring and, well, dull. I wish the man a fine return to form on his next solo endeavor; I'm sure he's got plenty of good music left to make.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the sticker price (but still lacking...).......2002-07-24

This collection features 11 love songs by a truly gifted adult contemporary singer/song-writer. Some of the songs are re-makes of old Chicago tunes ("If You Leave Me Now", "You're The Inspiration"), some are duets with famous female pop stars ("Next Time I Fall" with Amy Grant, "After All" with Cher), and two are new releases ("She Doesn't Need Me", "Do You Love Me That Much"). However, this is not my favourite Cetera collection since it is missing some of his biggest hits and only contains ballads; yet it's a worthy buy nonetheless. His "Greatest Hits" collection is a much better mix of slow and up-beat songs, and is worth purchasing if only for the pleasure of hearing that ballad-to-end-all-ballads, "Glory Of Love".

First of all Peter Cetera is a great vocalist with an out of ordinary vocal and technique you will never find in any other artist. The two new songs, 3 remakes and 6 duets from previous albums are all remarkable. You can keep the album and play it 10, 20 years later (maybe even more), it will still give the same emotion. Of course all are love songs but that fact makes it evergreen right ? "Do you love me that much" is a hit and it will touch you if you ever fall deep in love with some one. "The next time I fall" and "Forever tonight" will make sure you remember the one you love. The two songs are abolutely exctasy, cut you deep in heart. The 3 remakes need not much words those are excellent. different from the original but more easy listening yet not lacking the touch. Awesome album, awesome artist, a must buy...

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-02-01

I owned this cd years ago and had it stolen from me. After looking for years I have just found a copy of it on Amazon. The price of the copy is well over $100.00. I struggle week to week to pay bills. This cd is so profound that I have spent the money requested to replace this cd. I think that says it all.

5 out of 5 stars Beauty for all ages.......2005-11-08

What a wonderful album, well thought out and beautifully executed.

Akira Inoue, a Japanese musician, and David Rhodes, a British musican (best known for his longstanding collaboration with Peter Gabriel), have collaborated before (on the wonderful but hard to find "Head, Hands & Feet". For this album, based on an idea from Akira's aunt, they wrote musical accompaniment for a wonderful chldren's tale - "Snowflake" by Paul Gallico.

The package has two CDs - the story is narrated by Peter Gabriel in English on one CD, and by Akiko Yano in Japanese on the second disc. All of the music on the album was written by Inoue and Rhodes, and Rhodes sings all of the English songs on both discs.

This is gentle, peaceful, comforting music. In Mr. Rhodes' own words in the liner notes, "Although an apparently simple tale, it has immense charm and depth of feeling. Its message of necessity for courage and belief, in the face of adversity, is salutary...I hope that as my three young children grow, they will come to enjoy Snowflake, and her journey, as much as I do now."

A wonderful album to listen to, with a child, as you read the book together. Alternately, a lovely, relaxing respite from the world. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars The Brilliance of the Original Fleetwood Mac lives on.......2004-11-30

One word summarizes what the Green God era of 'Mac is - Brilliance.

For the uninitiated, Fleetwood Mac had a strong impressive career when Stevie Nicks was just in High School. Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer, Danny Kirwan, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie were a band soaked in the blues. From 1967 to 1970 before Messrs Greens' departure they penned some wonderful originals and were reknowned for their live shows.

This album is a compliation for starters. Some of it has been seen elsewhere, some of it has not.

Drifting comes right out of the gate, and features brillant and passionate solo work by Peter. Other highlights on the album are the foreboding A Fool No More, Mean Old Fireman showcasing Jeremy Spencer's mean slide guitar, The self titled instrumental and First Train Home - another Green masterpiece.

For those who are students of the blues. Early 'Mac is essentual. Now only did they play the music but two members of the band would later reflect lives of down-and-out bluesmen. Green's well documented LSD abuse which led to mental institutions and gobs of medication. Danny Kirwan who Peter Green brought to 'Mac also has fallen on hard times.

At $20 bucks plus, is this album worth it you ask? Answer is yes. A serious fan of the early years of 'Mac or simple blues fans ought to pick this up.

This is simply some of the best British Blues you've never heard.
