2 out of 5 stars Poorly Packaged, Cheap Compilation.......2007-05-18

There is so much really bad media available these days (yes you can get T.J. Hooker on DVD), it's hard to believe that SOMEONE hasn't remastered and released Shaun Cassidy's original albums on CD. No, it wasn't great stuff, but there was always a track or two or four, that were first-rate pop.

In a world where The Brady Bunch CDs are available, how can it be that Shaun Cassidy's are not?

This collection contains all his hits (all 4 of them) and a few decent album tracks but it's missing a lot of good material.

3 out of 5 stars Something's Missing.......2006-12-17

Whew! I had to hunt for a minute or two to find someone else who wanted "Midnight Sun" to be on this collection. For a while, I was afraid I was the only one. I was not a serious Shaun Cassidy fan, but for some reason I had the 45 with that song on it. It's beautiful! Rest of the disc be whacked, if that had been on it, I'd have spent the bucks. I think I'll go search for that 45 . . .

4 out of 5 stars Bringing back memories.......2006-11-10

Even though by today standards the songs on the album were simple and not very original. I can say that it brought back memories that were worth the price and and few of my friends loved them also. They also bought the album. If you grew up in the 70's, fun to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Great Comedy Material.......2006-10-13

The only reason i bought this is to make fun of it.
sure it brings back a few memories when my sister had some of
his 45's. But in no way shape or form does this have any merrit or substance. Nothing aginst Shawn personnaly i'm sure he made a few bucks
in his career, Corporate America at it's best!
Ilove this stuff!!!

2 out of 5 stars That's not rock and roll anymore..........2006-09-18

Let me start off by saying that I was a Shaun Cassidy fan when I was about 10, partly because I could sing his stuff back then and people thought I sounded like him. I'll also admit that I didn't expect much when I bought this 14-year-old CD from Virgin Records for $5, and that I was buying it primarily because nothing else of his is on CD, and my LPs of his albums are buried in my garage.

I definitely got my money's worth. Since $5 is about 25 percent of what the average CD costs these days, I should be happy if I liked one-fourth of the songs. Shaun scores here: his only real hits -- "Da Doo Ron Ron," "That's Rock and Roll," and "Hey Deanie" -- are on the disc, minus the crackle and pops from my old records. Yay. (Although I have to note that the sound quality on this disc is clean, but so-so: turn your volume up a notch higher than you normally would as you listen to this.)

It's the rest of the disc that I'm bummed about. The other nine cuts aren't truly "Greatest Hits," but mostly songs Shaun selected for the album because they were personal favorites. Yeah, I can agree with the Brian Wilson-penned "It's Like Heaven." Somewhere I have a tape of me singing this number in a talent show when I was about 11 or 12, before my voice changed. And his remake of The Lovin' Spoonful's "Do You Believe in Magic" -- his last Top 40 hit in the U.S. -- and "Teen Dream" (from "Born Late") and "Hard Love" (from the underrated "Under Wraps") are decent numbers that fit the pop flavor of the later 1970s. Yeah, this stuff's all cool.

The let-down is with the second half of the disc, particularly the final four songs. These come from Shaun's final two albums -- "Room Service" in 1979, and "Wasp" from 1980 -- which were commercial disasters. I don't own either of these albums (thank God!), and if these songs are any indication of what each album held, my ears are lucky indeed.

Absolute bottom of the barrel: the final cut, Shaun's horrendous remake of "Once Bitten, Twice Shy," which bears absolutely no resemblance to the versions most of the world knows (Ian Hunter and Great White, you can rest easy). Thank Todd Rundgren for that -- he reworked this song (and the others on "Wasp") in an effort to give Shaun a tougher sound heading out of the disco era. But Shaun Cassidy is forever a bubble gum pop icon, and heavier, acid rock-like music just doesn't stick.

If you catch this album in the bargain bin and remember to program only the first 6 or 7 tracks in your player, you'll have a bouncy trip down memory lane. Otherwise, wait for the inevitable release of his debut and "Born Late" on a combined CD.

Traditional Irish instrumentation mixes with classical orchestration on the soundtrack to Waking Ned Devine, and the results are impressive, to say the least. On "Red Herrings," a traditional fiddle-and-whistle lineup gets truly funky, and other tracks brim with the playful innocence of a tiny Irish hamlet. The Waterboys' single "Fisherman's Blues" is, of course, included as well. But the score that Irish composer Shaun Davey has created is magnificent--a delightful mix of old and new with some truly great playing. --James Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars GREAT music.......2007-04-01

Love the movie and the music is a HUGE part of the movie. It speaks to my Irish roots.

5 out of 5 stars Irish Folklore.......2007-03-08

This is soundtrack that captures the Irish spirit. I have throughly enjoy it everytime I listen to it, and I would recomend it to any who is looking for something different.

4 out of 5 stars If you liked the movie, you'll enjoy this CD.......2007-01-09

If you enjoyed the movie, you will enjoy this CD. I purchased it for my son who really likes this version of "The Parting Glass". (the last scene of the movie). This would be appropriate for any St. Patrick's Day party.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet fun.......2007-01-04

A movie to watch over and over again, and I seldom see a movie twice. Loved Ian Bannen, David Kelly and the entire kooky cast. Music is terrific too. Was particularly impressed with James Nesbitt's singing, quite soulful for a pig farmer!

5 out of 5 stars Rich, lively, and sweet.......2006-12-23

Previous reviewers have said it so eloquently already, but I have to chime in that I agree. This album is lively and sweet. Every song so appropriately complements it's respective scene in the film and listening to the music takes you back to each scene and the beautiful scenery of the Isle of Man all over again. Rich Irish instumentation - uillean pipes and all - make it authentic. A gem.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Sound.......2007-04-10

I've got both studio albums (which are pretty darn good), and usually I don't like many live albums since the sound quality sometimes leaves things to be desired.

That's not that case with this album. It's very high quality CD and DVD sound. It's like a "best of" album in an acoustic version (duh), and I like it so much I listen to the acoustic versions of these songs more than the studio versions! The intro to "The Truth" is awesome, and I like the cover of Pearl Jam's "Immortality" much better than the original.

Well worth it... even if you don't own any other Seether albums.

Must buy

5 out of 5 stars JUST GET EEEEEEEEEEET ! ! :).......2007-02-02

I like all kinds of music, really like Seether, and love this CD. All of their hits acoustic...it just rocks, and it was recorded well. On a good system you can hear all the instrument details! MUST HAVE!!

4 out of 5 stars Good 4.......2006-11-11

I had their first CD, and while it was good, the songs werent anything spectacular. So it was hit or miss for me. Soetimes id play a track or 2, so when K&E came out i never bothered with it.
I was browsing in the store and saw this. The ambiance on the cover kind of sucked me in. I tend to like this acoustic style stuff. Looked at the tracklisting and figured these songs could sound good in this setting. So i picked it up.
And as i figured, they pretty much play it safe and go note-for-note with the studio stuff. Not a bad thing, but nothing risky is attempted here except possibly the Pearl Jam cover of "Immortality" which is really well done. The sound quality is crisp, and the delivery is sincere..
So i will say that this CD got me re-interested in these guys a bit. I always liked Morgans laid back singing style. Lyrically, some are quite good. Some a bit hollow, but arent terrible by any means. Just a bit basic. If you liked Seether before, youll LOVE them after this. If you were a bit reluctant, this is a great place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Way better!!!.......2006-10-29

I'm a big fan of Seether and was eager to get my hands on this album, and i wasn't dissapointed at all!

This cd was everything i wanted out of a live performance and much, much more, there was even a song i hadn't heard as i didn't have the first album.

Worth every penny!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars All hail Shawn and Ed.......2007-01-19

Great soundtrack riddled with soundbites that make it worth it

5 out of 5 stars Shaun of the Dub - A remix of audio from a great movie.......2007-01-19

Shaun of the Dead - OST is genuinely that; original. The disk is comprised of all the songs heard in the movie, some of which are remixed with dialogue from the movie. Very similar to Taretino's soundtrack, but on steroids. Edgar Wright must be as big of a fan of music as he is George Romero, because the 4am DJ session from the movie is played out through the entire album.

While some songs are untouched, like both Queen songs and The Specials, most of the other tracks are versions of songs in the movie mixed with dialogue. Some songs are even created using the dialogue as lyrics, Like Zombi / Kernkraft 400. Most of the mixing entails an intro or end to a song. There are even some original score tracks at the end.

I think the real treat of the soundtrack though is the bits of dialogue interspersed throughout. For a real fan of the movie, like myself, getting to hear familiar lines with songs that were in the background that can be heard in their entirety now. I think that this is one of the best soundtracks of recent years in that it accommodates pretty much every element of the films audio, from dialogue to songs to score. This ones got them all. Let's put it this way; I bought it as an import to the US, and it was worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars shaun of the dead.......2005-08-20

i think shaun of the dead was great so when i heard the soundtrack i was even happier . It has highlights from the movie and it is really fab i would relly recomend it and I would definetly give 20/20.

4 out of 5 stars Almost as fun as the movie.......2005-08-08

This is a great, GREAT soundtrack. The film's score is brilliantly composed and the song selection is phenomenal. This album has tempted me to buy some sort of Queen "best of" album, because the two Queen songs that are included here are some of the greatest, least overplayed Queen songs there are (Bohemian Rhapsody? We Will Rock You? PLAYED OUT) Also, it's nice to hear some old (OLD) school hip hop from Grandmaster Flash, it's astounding that this is what hip hop used to be, compared to the crap they're slopping out today. Finally, the album contains the only good song the Smiths ever recorded, "Panic". The library tracks (or the remixes thereof) from Dawn of the Dead round out this soundtrack perfectly. My only gripe was the overuse of samples from the movie, some within the songs themselves. These would be better left either as their own seperate tracks, or off the album entirely. We've seen the movie, let the music speak for itself.

Overall, worth the price (though it is an import) and worth several (hundred? thousand?) listens.

2 out of 5 stars Missing music.......2005-07-07

I loved the music in the movie and was disappointed that the CD had sound bites from the movie over the music. I really just wanted to enjoy the songs. I'm going to have to individually download the songs to get it without parts of the movie included.

5 out of 5 stars So beautiful you want to share it.......2005-05-20

An American friend and I were driving in Ireland when we bought this album. We listened in our small rental car as we travelled on narrow roads seeing for the first time the relics of ancient Ireland ~ and the music helped to capture our mood. When the piece from St. Patrick's Breastplate, "The Deers Cry", played, we looked at one another, stunned. It struck a chord from our Irish ancestry and we could only respond by playing the piece again and then again. That happened nearly 4 years ago and this music still never fails to call me to a deep reverence for the glory that is Ireland.

5 out of 5 stars Going Home.......2002-09-06

For anyone who has the slightest bit of Celtic blood, this music and narrative will awaken ancestral memories and cause your sunconscious to declare, "I'm home". And those who have visited enchanted Ireland will want to rush to the phone to order return tickets. The suite is decidedly a "spiritual" journey, but even agnostics can appreciate many of the pieces. The poetry and music are exceptional! Bravo, Shaun Davey!

5 out of 5 stars A Journey through the Old Days..........2001-06-22

When I first heard this album, I was struck by the feeling that I 'had heard this all before'. While Mr. Davey states that he wrote this some 10 to 15 years ago, I cannot but help feel that he has 'been home, indeed'. The 'shield' song, where they pipers and drummers as well as the members of the chorus stamp their feet as if banging shields...the memories are just too deep. Rita Connelly is wonderful, her voice reaching deep into the soul. She is particularly good in 'A'Grain', (appologies to Mr. Davey, if the spelling is wrong...but my ancient Scots Gaelic is not up to par!), where the orchestration and the voices call forth visions of the stormy isles of the Hebrides. Mr Davey calls upon the soul of the Gaelic world, in both words and music...it is a truly wonderful work. I am only sorry that there are ONLY 5 ***** to award this album, for I would put at least 15 there!!!

5 out of 5 stars Powerful Celtic Sound.......1999-11-19

The suite is a moving expression of a Pilgrim's journey, and a powerful evocation of a Celtic spirit. The orchestra, choirs, and pipe bands are all excellent, as are the soloists. This CD is a must for anyone who enjoys the Relief of Derry Symphony, also by Shaun Davey, anyone who enjoys the music of Riverdance, or anyone who enjoys rich classical music.

1 out of 5 stars The worst album of David's whole career...............2007-06-11

As a long time David Cassidy fan I have almost lost all respect for him as an artist today. What on earth was he thinking releasing such a horrible CD. It's definitely the worst album of his entire career. How many times can he re-hash these songs and expect fans to buy it?? He has definitely taken his career backwards rather than moving forward with a brand new album with new songs. I would not have payed good money to buy this CD had it not been sent to me by a friend. I cringed in horror when I played afew minutes of each track. There are fans who obviously like this CD and there are many of us who absolutely hate it. I'd hate to even think that David would perform these tracks live in concert. Have also heard he could be doing another CD like this. Thanks David for all the great years but NO THANKS! The one thing that David should have given his now dwindling fan base is his back catalog. We all blame record companies for not giving us what we want but sorry to say that David is just as much to blame for not getting his older catalog released. He say's it's not about the money but we all know better than that. How long can fans wait?? We've hung on far too long on a thread and we are getting these cheaply made CD's that David thinks will make us happy. What we all want is "Bulletin Board" released......all the unreleased Partridge Family songs and the rest of his marvellous catalog including a re-issue of "Romance".......a stunning album from 1985. David deserves a huge box set released and one for the Partridge Family which is long overdue. Why should we put up with mediocre releases?? It's a travesty for an artist like David to not have his back catalog out including a Vintage concert from the 70's on DVD. If only David had good people working for him it could be a different story. As a long time fan I am bitterly disappointed. It's time that David gives fans what they really want. We've supported him over thirty years now...................

5 out of 5 stars Loved the originals, these are great too!!.......2007-05-25

This CD was playing before David's concert at the Hammersmith Apollo in London in April. The atmosphere was festive and the new upbeat songs put everyone in a good mood! David only performed a couple of them in concert and told us he was really nervous about performing the new arrangements but he did an awesome job. I came home desperate to get my hands on this CD! I will always love the original Partridge family songs, but fans who are being so negative about the new remix should try to see these as a wonderful addition, not a replacement. As for the songs, 'I'll Meet you Halfway' is my all time favorite ballad and the old version will always be my favorite. But 'Rock Me Baby' is awesome. I dare you to try to sit still through it! And the never to be left out 'I Think I Love You' is just as good as the old one. So buy it and dance til you drop!

2 out of 5 stars David Cassidy is wonderful...this cd is NOT!.......2007-05-10

I purchased this cd and listened to it twice. It was hard to hear the songs, I loved growing up, turned into techno trash. This is nothing new. If David wanted to try a new style of music, then he should have written something new. Seeing him perform this live was even more painful. David has always been a leader so why is he following a prerecorded beat. We all make mistakes David. We still love you and can't wait until you stop rehashing the past, with a twist and give us some new David Cassidy tunes. Would love to see him record "Hush" and "Common Theif". He does them in concert and they are wonderful!!
David Cassidy = sexy, soleful and intimate. This new cd is none of those!

1 out of 5 stars Why David, WHY??.......2007-04-17

A new CD by my all-time favorite pop singer...and it's hideous. I have always liked David's music and his voice has always been amazing to me. I've always felt he's been an underated artist because he happened to fall into the "teen idol" category in his 70's Partridge Family days. David is a first-rate singer and while the holier-than-thou critics may dismiss the Partridge Family recordings as bubblegum, they were produced to perfection and touted some of the best session players in the business at the time. So...why would David want to destroy those wonderful pop songs by doing this to them? I'm sorry, but ballads like "I'll Meet You Halfway" and "Point Me in the Direction of Albuquerque" were NEVER meant to be raved-up dance tracks. They don't even sound like the same songs and are simply awful. Worse yet is what was once David's cool "rocker" song, "Rock Me Baby." Not only does this new version NOT rock, it isn't even the same tune! David has worked for years to try and achieve respect as an artist. Overall, he's done a good job of turning out decent new music - and the man really should have evolved into a rock-star the way George Michael went from Wham! to a solo act and a Grammy for Album of the Year for "Faith" and how Justin Timberlake went from N*SYNC to his current huge solo career. With this release, David has taken GIANT steps backward in his quest for credibility. Hopefully he'll record a CD of NEW material someday instead of re-recording (and crucifying) his past hits - which are loved the way they were. I will continue listening to the Partridge Family "Sound Magazine" and David Cassidy "Rock Me Baby" albums - and his others - for the rest of my life, however I will never play this CD again.

5 out of 5 stars David Cassidy: Up To Date.......2007-03-27

On first listen it would be easy to dismiss this CD. Some Cassidy purists may possibly do so - but you HAVE to listen in entirety to really get it.

This is Cassidy/Partridge material brought right up to date with remixes by Craig J - who has done some awesome remixes for the likes of Madonna, Beyonce, Gwen Stefani and Mariah Carey. And he has done a highly credible job with Mr Cassidy.

This is a feel good, "get on your feet and dance" retake of David Cassidy's material. The first thing that is evident is that David's voice, always magnificent, shines through. The man can really sing!! The production quality of the remixes is also fabulous. One can almost imagine that if The Partridge Family were starting out today - this is the sound they would have been given.

The songs - highly melodic - sound very contemporary. What Craig J has done is take the material and do unfamiliar arrangements to songs that are very familiar. The Partridge songs stand up very well and I especially enjoyed "I Think I Love You", "I Can Feel Your Heartbeat"", "I Woke Up In Love This Morning" and "Echo Valley 2-6809".

But it's David Cassidy's solo retakes that really do it for me. "Rock Me Baby", "Could It Be Forever" and "Ricky's Tune" are terrific. But the absolute stand out track is "Cherish". In my humble opinion, this track has Top 40 HIT written all over it!!

I know that some of David's fans would prefer some new material and completion of the Cassidy/Partridge back catalogue. I understand that and wouldn't mind that myself at all. For some too, the criticism may be about what the songs lose in passion by upping the tempos. My response to that, however, is that (a) the songs still communicate extremely well and (b) they are readily available in their original form.

As a long standing Cassidy devotee - I am REALLY happy to have this CD in my collection. It's fresh, new, uplifting, fun, slick and contemporary. And you just can't go past David Cassidy's voice!

If you're interested in hearing the original recordings, buy Could It Be Forever... The Greatest Hits. It's a wonderful retrospective of David's 70s career. But buy this CD too and enjoy it for the experience I'm sure David and Craig J intend it to be. You won't regret it.

Album Description

"Midnight Landing," is 10 Ft. Ganja Plant's second release on ROIR. Their first, entitled "Hillside Airstrip", was uniformly hailed by the music press. "Midnight Landing," at it's heart, is inspired by the recording processes of the great Jamaican studio bands of the 70's (and their American counterparts, Motown and Stax) where a song was potentially written, learned, and recorded in one session, with the band playing live on one track and then being voiced on the second track, with no regrets, and no apologies. Add to this ethos, some dubwise studio mastery and experimentation ("Chanting Nyabinghi", inspired by the African drumming style, is a creative departure and one of the best tracks they've ever cut) and you begin to get the picture.

4 out of 5 stars Good. Reggae. Album........2007-03-25

A very palatable combination of instrumental, rock-steady, roots, and dub reggae with a somewhat Euro feel to it (think early Steel Pulse perhaps). One star deducted for some spotty production values (a bit of harshness to the mix, with some distortion that might even be intentional, i don't know).

1 out of 5 stars Midnight Landing.......2005-03-06

Absolutely no originality to this album. I purchased "No Bed of Roses" along with this album and it's much better (no wonder with Reggae ace Style Scott leading the project). The whole tiime I was listening to Midnight Landing I thought that perhaps there will be one song anyway that made the purchase worthwhile, and I had to wait until the very last song to think "yeah, maybe that one." There was no compeling instrumentals on this album either and I really wish they would quite trying to imitate Augustus Pablo with that melodica. I won't blame previous reviewers who liked the album because I already had it before reading my first review, but sorry you people should try listening to Isreal Vibration or Misty In Roots if you really want roots music. I hope I like John Brown's Body better because I was actually looking for their Spirits All Around album when I found this one. (not an internet purchase this time). Too bad I can't return this one.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2004-02-27

I was surprised that I had never heard of 10 Ft. Ganja Plant's music because this album is quite good. Draws quite a close resemblance to South African Reggae. My favorite song is "Let the music hit"

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as hillside airstrip.......2004-02-11

This new release is a let down compaired to their first album. The vocals are different and not as powerful. Althought they still have that strong and melodic rythem. I am still a huge fan but a little dissappointed

4 out of 5 stars GOOD, BUT NOT HILLSIDE AIRSTRIP.......2004-01-16

For the second outing, the Plant came with a solid effort. They had nice riddims, but the grooves were deeper on the first album. It took a few listens this time for me to get into them, yet in the end they won me over. Still worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars All I Can Say Is "WOW"!!!.......2006-02-20

I guess i am a little bit behind in the times, I just bought this album yesterday after hearing people tell me how great it is and of course it's links to a great band called Far. This album is amazing, I wish I bought it sooner. Every song on it is well written and great. The guitars are crunchy and the vocals are clean. They have a sound somewhere between Foo Fighters and Staind...But they are in no way just another mainstream rock act. "Above The Noise" has it's crushing moments of anger, "Bonethrower" and "The Ride Of Los Angeles" and it's slow jams "The Gift" and "Looking Down The Barrel". This record is a must have for fans of meaty, guitar driven hard rock. I just hope they put out another album. The best songs "Bonethrower", "The Gift" and "Payday". Check this album out and the band Far, if you can find them.

5 out of 5 stars Insta-Classic.......2005-08-22

I recommend buying this for the hard rock tracks only. Great testosterone driven grunge dabbing in the arts of metal occasionally on this one. However, on the slower tracks like Payday, Looking Down The Barrel, etc.. It seems they overproduced and made it crappy. Find the demo versions of these songs to download (its incredible how much better the demo of payday is) along with some rarities like New Light, Come Together and make urself the perfect rock mixer cd.

5 out of 5 stars Something Fresh To Listen Too.......2005-04-26

I admire this CD because it sounds like Nu-Metal but it doesnt Suck Ass like Nu-Metal the singer has a perfect voice for the music it matches it perfectly........the guitar work is Nu-Metal with a unique splash to it....somewhere along the way you will notice a guitar riff here and there.........anyways get this album because its better than the cover puts it out to be.......my favorite songs are (Payday) and (Future of an end)

3 out of 5 stars Above Average performance of Average Music.......2005-03-17

I bought this album used, which is the way I think it should be bought. It isn't worth more then five bucks in all. I don't mean that overly negatively, it's just that this album doesn't have the umph it takes to make me fork over more then pocket change. I think the best way to sum up the sound of the Revolution Smile is if you were to take Josey Scott from Saliva doing one of their more mellow songs, on stage with Filter. Make any sense? How about this, if you are a fan of the Filter progression of things, meaning sweet vocals over acoustic guitar that blends into heavy yelling over distortion. In fact, now that I think about it, this album really does sound like a Filter album...huh? Anyways, there really aren't any standout tracks I can point you towards, "Cadilliac Ass" is cool and "Alien" ain't bad. Of course you'll want to sample the single "bonethrower" before you buy this used. If you want to understand why I keep comparing them to Filter listen to "I wish I" that about sums it up. Listen, if this sounds interesting or you like one of the samples, buy it used for a couple bucks, just be prepared to listen to it for a week and then lose it.

4 out of 5 stars worthy.......2004-05-22

The old saying "never judge a book by its cover", really hits home on this CD. The name of the band and CD pics do not apply to whats inside. I thought it would be LOUD-ANGRY-HATE music. WRONG! Its not.. nowhere near that.

After hearing this CD 3 times, it is definitely one that I will go back to again and again. Musically, it wont break any barriers, but the way they mix up the tempo between songs helps make the music seem less like every other cookie cutter CD out there. It may not appeal to everyone out there, but IMHO there are at least 8 very good songs on the CD. The rest are somewhere in the filler range, but they dont suck either.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2002-08-20

This pricey UK import CD filled a lot of gaps in my music collection and is an excellent overview of notable music of (mostly) recent films. It's difficult to find consistently listenable soundtrack collections like this, by that I mean free from the obligitory Whitney Houston or Celine Dion embarrassments. Usually rights issues prevent comprehensive compilations like this in the US, too. While I enjoy a lot of soundtrack music, there aren't so many complete soundtracks that I would care to own, some examples of exceptions being Ennio Morricone scores and the About a Boy Soundtrack. While certainly most of these tracks are the actual recordings used in their respective films, I noticed that "La mamma morte" from Philadelphia is not the Maria Callas version. There might be other cases like this, I'm not sure. And "Unchained Melody" from Ghost is an orchestral version, not the pop song (but I consider this a plus). This collection seems to focus on the subtle and quirky, yet melodic music of indie films, with less emphasis on the loud sweeping orchestral scores of major Hollywood hits, but of course there are a few like Gladiator and Braveheart, which are welcome here because like I've said, I probably wouldn't listen to the whole score. I love the two Thomas Newman compositions from American Beauty, and it's good to have some music from films by the Cohen Brothers here. My only complaint would have to be the order of the songs. You would think they would avoid jumping back and forth between pop songs, orchestral scores, and quiet music, but it just seems thrown together by random. I would compare this collection to the excellent "Miramax Films Greatest Hits" but the makers of that album knew to group the two pop/rock songs at the end.

After earning six Dove Award nominations for his critically acclaimed Invitation to Eavesdrop, Shaun Groves has a hard act to follow. Groves shows no sign of any sophomore slump with his outstanding follow-up. There's a reflective, contemplative tone throughout the release. Groves displays great interest in those moments where we find ourselves between light and dark, a theme that's captured well on the title track and "Need You More," with its lyrical references to "shades of gray" and its musical references to fellow Texas native Ricky Nelson's "Garden Party." Other shining moments include the heart-tugging ballad "Without You" and the dreamy, Lennonesque "Jesus." Groves switches gears on the rockers "See You" and "I Love You," both of which are bound to radio hits. And "God of Us" is yet another Christmas song with a slightly new way of telling an age-old story. Don't miss the hidden worship-oriented bonus track. Twilight is intelligent, thoughtful, and beautiful. --Michael Lyttle

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Adventuresome .......2006-09-14

My first time hearing Shaun Groves was at a show on tour for his record Twilight with Ginny Owens at our church, and I was pleasantly surprised with his writing and songs. We bought Twilight, which is a great record in its own right, but Invitation to Eavesdrop is a bit more engaging in my opinion. The songs have lots of interesting chord changes and melodies, with enough nicely unexpected melodic twists to make them feel comfortable yet with room to grow on you. The string arrangements add a lot of nice depth, the instrument tones and vocal harmonies are all well done. Songs like Should I Tell Them, Damage Done, Welcome Home, & Your Renown all stick like glue after only hearing them a couple times. The musical palette is a familiar acoustic guitar-based pop-rock, but Shaun's writing stands out from 95% of all others. And like I mentioned, the string arrangements help flesh out these tunes to give them a very expansive, rich feeling. All that plus some very inspiring lyrics. Blessings to Shaun.

4 out of 5 stars Great Christian Soft Rock.......2005-09-02

Shaun Groves is a very talented soft rock artist. His lyrics are Christian throughout. His sound is very pleasant.

There are no bad songs on this CD. There are several very good to excellent songs. My favorites on this album are the following: Move Me, After the Music Fades, Abba Father, and Welcome Home. He wrote all of the songs on this album and his songwriting talents are top notch.

I highly recommend this CD for any Christian music fan.

5 out of 5 stars my favorite.......2003-04-08

This is one of those cd's you get hooked on and listen to over and over again. Great songs with messages that make you look within and inspire your faith and love for Jesus.

5 out of 5 stars incredible debut.......2003-02-25

I first heard Shaun Groves when he was the opening act at a Jennifer Knapp/ Jars of Clay concert. I thought he was decent, but wasn't completely impressed. I saw him later on that same tour and was more impressed by him so I decided to take a major leap of faith and buy the cd. It was one of my best purchases. While he is pretty good in concert, this debut cd blows much of what I've heard recently out of the water. It is just that good. Radio singles include "Welcome Home" "Move Me" "After the Music Fades" and "Satellite". For me, the most moving tracks are "Should I Tell Them", which deals about the fear involved in talking about Christ, "Damage Done", and "Two Cents". All in all, this is one of the best cds in my collection and is clearly one of the best of the year it was released. Top of the line Christian music, and just good music in any category.

5 out of 5 stars A Heart for God.......2003-02-04

Heard him in concert sing most of these songs. Fabulous, honest, sincere. Truly seeking God. A step above most contemporary Christian Music.
