With this disc, Chanticleer, the internationally renowned, all-male 12-voice chamber choir, celebrates its 25th anniversary. Presenting songs from earlier albums plus one not previously recorded, the selection displays the group's remarkable stylistic and linguistic versatility, as well as all the qualities that have made it famous: the impeccable precision and intonation; the pristine tonal purity; the deep, inner expressiveness; the infinitely variable range of colors, textures, dynamics and moods; and the incredible vocal control that allows voices to stand out as well as to blend into a seamless, sonorous whole. Not for nothing has the group been called "an orchestra of voices" with its ability to sound like a big band in chordal passages and to imitate bass pizzicati as well as patter-songs and gospel shouts. The sopranos take off into stratospheric heights with florid coloratura; it is hard to believe that these are male voices. The program ranges from Gregorian chant and liturgical music of the 16th and 17th century, through traditional and jazz-influenced folk songs and spirituals (some in deplorably bad arrangements), to works by contemporary composers. Chanticleer's mostly vibrato-less vocal style still reflects its roots in its original Renaissance repertoire, but the way the singers use their voices in the popular, jazzy songs makes one aware of the evolving kinship between the two traditions. Though primarily an a capella ensemble, Chanticleer is occasionally joined by various instrumental groups, from period instrument orchestras to a jazz trio, and Dawn Upshaw adds her radiant, smiling, unmistakably "real" soprano to a delightful, high-spirited performance of a Spanish Carol. This disc is a fine, varied sampling of Chanticleer's discography and should inspire listeners to search out all the complete albums. --Edith Eisler

4 out of 5 stars My idea of heaven.......2007-02-17

If you liked Norman Luboff's Song's of the Sea's "Shenandoah", the price of this CD is worth it alone. That's why I ordered the CD. I heard Chanticleer's version and immediately ordered it. The rest is just the icing on the cake.

Then there is the one Kiri Tekanawa (sp?) offering, which is the only female voice on the recording.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful, but not quite the best of I had hoped.......2006-07-18

Some great material truly shines on this album, but I wsih that the group had been a little less populist in their choice of repertoire. There is a little too many arrangements and folk-like material, with the exception of the wonderful "Dulaman", and I would like to have heard some more varied repertoire. That said this is an excellent starting point for this amazing group.

5 out of 5 stars A treasury.......2005-11-06

As you can tell from the samples, the music here is amazing and covers a wide territory. It is less obvious that much of this is available on other CDs. I am confident, for example, that "We Shall Walk Through the Valley In Peace" is the same track that you will find on their phenomenal and highly recommended gospel collection, _Where the Sun Shall Never Go Down_, and I see a number of familiar-looking titles from other CDs. My advice is: if you're looking for a broad sample of the group's repertoire, then you can't go wrong here -- but if you've already got several Chanticleer albums, then you'll want to check your existing collection for potential duplications before buying this 'treasury.'

5 out of 5 stars Chanticleer: A Portrait.......2005-10-26

This is a marvelous singing group of all males with a little addition of Dawn Upshaw on a couple of pieces. They are thourally amazing at what they can sing with Male Voices usually unaccompanied. Obviously they have good strong Contra-Tenors that can manage the high notes without any problems. I would recommend this album to anyone who enjoys vocal music, unaccompanied and like Male Voices

4 out of 5 stars For historical reference, a must have........2007-05-09

If you're looking for the best quality recording, it's not due to the recording technologies of that time; Allessandro Moreschi died in 1922. But, if you want to hear how a castrato could sound like, it's a great recording reference. Sound quality is average; a lot of hiss and clicks. The singer or the singing "seems" average too: a lot of scooping (remember: different times, different singing techniques, different tastes; could be the result of singing in the acoustics of the Sistine Chapel). But, I don't regret my choice because I wanted a recording I could go back to and appreciate the evolution of singing throughout history.

5 out of 5 stars A real rarity.......2007-05-07

Very interesting and rare recordings of the last castrato, even if his voice was at that time already rather exhausted. The most fascinating thing is to hear from living the voice of a Pope of the XIXth Century as Leo XIII was.

2 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-10-03

Professor Alessandro Moreschi (1858-1922),made in 1902-3 about 10 recordings all devoted to 19th century religious music. For us today the great question is: how far do Moreschi's records allow us to form any notion of the characteristics of castrato singing in the great periods? To that question there can be no certain answer, but I think that the resemblance must be slight! To begin with Moreschi's technique, far from being impeccable, often sounds shaky; in some passages he fumbles for his notes and wavers almost comically as Florence Foster Jenkins herself. These vocal shortcomings can hardly be ascribed to the singer's advanced age, for in his mid-forties he ought to have been not far past him prime. Ancient though the records are, they are reasonably well-recorded and probably give a fairly accurate impression of Moreschi's tone quality, if not his volume. The voice, unquestionably a soprano, resembles that of neither boy or woman, being stronger than the one and less sauve than the other. And I am totally sure that he is a long way from Farinelli. He is surprising, but never exquisite. The most painful for me to listen to were:'Ave Verum' Mozart- 'Crucifixus' from 'Petite Messe Solenelle' Rossini-and 'Ave Maria' Schubert. My problem with this disc is no doubt the fact that I would not want anyone to think that Moreschi's voice even in his prime was in any way equal to the great castrati singers of the 17th century!!!!

5 out of 5 stars What a beautiful voice!.......2005-08-16

Moreschi's voice is incredibly beautiful. You have to get beyond the fact that this is an old recording and just listen to him hit those high notes without sounding shrill or breaking apart. In the end, this is your only chance to listen to a real castrato, and a good one at that.

4 out of 5 stars A new world opened in front of me........2005-08-16

As a long-time lover of classical music but an amateur in opera I got interested into the opera voices and the castrato voices especially since I read a book about the castratos (Anne Rice: Cry to Heaven).
I was at first slightly shocked about the CD. Spoiled by our standards today I had to get used to the voices and especially to the low quality of the recordings (1902-04). The more I was listening the better I liked it. I started to understand that this long ago poeple were feeling different and therefore singing different. So many more emotions and so much suffering, you can hear it in the music if you can open up to it and, ignore the bad technical part of it.
I don't regret buying this rare recording since it gave me more than just music.
Thanks for saving these recordings and thanks to Amazon for making it possible to buy them.

4 out of 5 stars THE renaissance requiem .......2006-07-08

Please note that there are confusing inconsistencies on this page. The track selections above provided by Amazon are the ones found on the CD. However, where Amazon states above "On this CD," the tracks refer not to this CD, but to a recording of Victoria's earlier requiem, Missa pro defunctus first published in 1583. The reviewer below also mistakenly states that this CD is Missa pro defunctus. This CD, is, in fact, Officium Defunctorum, published in 1605.

That cleared up, this requiem mass is undoubtedly my favorite of the renaissance era (albeit late renaissance). Before Bach and the baroque period, composers had a different set of harmonic goals that allowed for a beauty different than anything produced in later periods. This is a great example of that. There are moments of sumptous sadness that bring tears to my eyes. Although this recording is superb in its own right, I prefer the passion and clarity of the Gabrieli Consort's recording. (I have not heard the Tallis Scholar's recording, however.) For that reason, I give it four stars instea of five.

      5 out of 5 stars Correction.......2005-05-04

This is Victoria's Pro defunctis requiem not the more famous Officium defunctorum, as the reviewers below have stated. Both are beautiful pieces in their own right, though!

      5 out of 5 stars Divine.......2003-11-06

I am a big fan of choral Renaissance music, and I have to say it does not get any better then this. Tomas Luis de Victoria, is generally regarded as Spain's premier composer of the Renaissance, and rightfully so. An ordained priest, Victoria was a supreme master of the polyphonic art, as he infused his music, with chromaticism and emotion beyond that of Italian composers more closely guided by Roman conservatism. His Requiem Mass and Responsories for Tenebrae are some of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written, rivaling Palestrina's Missa Papae Marcelli and Cardoso's Requiem Mass. I cannot express in words how moving this music is. The music is so tranquil yet so powerful at the same time. The westminster Cathedral Choir under the guidance of David Hill is superb. In my opinion, it is one of the finest choral music ensembles in the world. If you do enjoy Victoria's Requiem Mass I would also suggest Frei Manuel Cardoso's Requim Mass. It is somewhat different then Victoria's, but just as beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars LUX IN TENEBRIS........2000-11-13

This is a fabulously atmospheric recording of Victoria's serenely sad and beautiful,"Officium defunctorum" of 1605.The quite excellent Westminster Cathedral Choir under their Master of Music,David Hill do perfect justice to this marvellously wrought composition, which positively radiates beauty from practically every note that enters the priviliged ear of the listener.

If you are entirely new (lucky old you--for a start !)to this mordantly (though never depressingly so) glorious masterpiece:can I offer you the following analogy,by way of helping you to understand and appreciate the performance as it unfolds through your speakers or headphones ? If you could imagine yourself as a lone traveller in a winter landscape, and suddenly you were beset by a raging blizzard, which leaves you completely disorientated and blind. You stumble on through the swirling, inpenetrable gloom for what seems like an eternity, and before long your path has been completely obliterated, and you realise that you are completely lost. Then, just as you are about to give up hope, out of the darkness looms the vast bulk of a Cathedral,it's spires lost in the lowering clouds.Thankfully the massive oak doors are slightly ajar, and you gratefully slip inside to take refuge from the howling wind, and horizontally driven snow.Shutting the door you are left in absolutely becalmed silence and darkness, which seems almost unreal, considering the maelstrom that rages outside. You stamp the snow from your boots, and blow on your hands for warmth, but then you realise that the interior of the Cathedral is not as dark as you first thought, and far up the nave a few candles, only just illuminate the faces of a small group of men.One of them begins to intone in a reverentially, penitential voice,"Credo quod Redemptor meus vivit" (I know that my Redeemer liveth),and is sonorously joined by a few of his companions."Ah,you think to yourself,I've come upon the service of matins".It is such an arresting sound after the unfettered screams of nature, that you can't help but creep a little further up the aisle, and sidle quietly into the shadowy corner of a pew.The monks finish their brief responsory, and you soon see that they are not alone but accompanied by a group of young boys who magically break out into the flowing lines of the,"Taedet animam meam vitae meae" (My soul is weary of my life). What a fantastic control of sound from such young throats you think, and at last some warmth is starting to return to your near frozen extremities, even though the vast space appears to be without artificial heat of any kind. The monks pick up the plainchant of ,"Ego sum resurrectio et vita" (I am the Resurrection and the life",and then solemnly intonate the fairly severe and austere lines of the "Canticle of Zachary".They finish with a tender,"Requiescant in pace,Amen",and you perhaps feel you have intruded long enough, and start to make motions to go.But before you can rise to your feet,a single boy sings a confidently echoing,"Requiem" which positively roots you to the spot.He is joined by his peers on "aeternam",and then at the word "dona", it is as though an angelic hand has thrown a power switch in Heaven, and the entire ecclesiastical edifice is instantly bathed in a radiant, supernatural light, allowing you to see for the first time the superbly, soaring architecture that previously lay hidden. All thoughts of leaving are now banished from your mind, and you sit there absoutely transfixed by the beautiful sound emanating so effortlessly from these amazing choristers.

When the mass proper has oh so sadly ended, you see that some people in mourning clothes have gathered around a memorial of some kind, and as they do so the assembled choir solemnly sing the tear-provoking funeral motet,"Versa est in luctum cithara mea" (My harp is turned to mourning).Surely they must be commemorating someone of tremendous stature, considering the astounding and awe-inspiring music that their death has engendered ? The Absolution then follows to bestow a fnal blessing and benediction on all present, and there is a wonderful moment as the boys launch their last "Kyrie Eleison",not just into the vault of the church, but into the very vault of Heaven,or so it seems.

And so it is over, and the Choir and mourners file slowly out, leaving you to an empty, quiet and cold building once more.

Outside the blizzard has subsided, leaving a winter landscape of a pristine, white freshness that is absolutely dazzling to the eye.You resume your original journey, but now you are no longer the same person who started out that morning;something has changed, and although you may not realise exactly what at first, you do know now that wherever shadows appear to be the deepest and blackest, there is a light of blinding, brilliance to banish them forever.

      4 out of 5 stars A CD that delivers..........1999-06-14

The magazine "Friends of Cathedral Music" recently described Winchester Cathedral Choir under David Hill as one of England's greatest musical treasures, and this CD confirms that statement nicely. Aside from one track, the music is all unaccompanied, and I'm pleased to report that it all stays perfectly in tune. There is a broad variety of music here arranged into a very fulfilling programme. Samuel Barber's "Agnus Dei" is his own transcription of the famous "Adagio for Strings" made famous in the soundtracks of such films as 'Platoon', and this recording really will haunt you for a long time... David Hill follows this with his own recent piece, "Dominus Illuminatio" which is very effective and brilliantly sung, before travelling back in time a short while to perform Charles Wood's celebrated anthem "Hail, gladdening light". The programme goes on like this, jumping across centuries and styles to include works by Mozart, Arvo Part, John Tavener, Gustav Holst, Thomas Tallis, Maurice Durufle, Francis Poulenc and Victoria. All of it is beautifully sung, and is good for listening to continuously or in separate tracks. There are some bits that do annoy me, however- Tavener's "Song for Athene" is pitifully and ineffectively rendered (compared to Martin Neary's outstanding readings at Westminster Abbey), the final Poulenc piece is good but ends on a discord (which thus lets down the end of the whole CD- where it comes), the Latin is badly pronounced by several people (particularly by the soloists in Holst's "Nunc Dimittis") and the trebles ruin Mozart's "Ave verum" by trilling with the first violin on their penultimate note- this is absolutely cringe-worthy! However, other works such as Part's "Magnificat" and Durufle's Four Gregorian Chant-based motets are in my opinion the best recordings of these works around. This is certainly a disc to revel in, that will not become boring or obvious with repeated listenings. Mostly excellent.

      5 out of 5 stars Absolutely gorgeous!.......2006-11-24

The Westminster Cathedral Choir does consistently fine work: one can always depend on their precision, musicality and good taste. Their sound is bright and forward, more like a French choral sound than the usually darker English sound. The lush, reverberant acoustics of the cathedral are a joy, particularly when the organ is used.

This is such a beautiful CD; it was just released this month. Here is Roman Catholic liturgy at its finest. You can't listen to this prayerful music, so beautifully sung, and not lament the Church's widespread misunderstanding of the Vatican II liturgy directives, which stated that Gregorian chant, sacred polyphony and the use of the organ should continue to have "pride of place" in the reformed Roman liturgy. Instead, in our zeal to be contemporary, which is a legitimate concern, we have succeeded in cutting ourselves off from centuries of our tradition, and we are the poorer for it.

And so this recording is all the more precious. I think what I enjoy the most here is not the polyphonic motets, which are lovely but which can be found elsewhere. It's the chanted psalmody, especially since chant in the Liturgy of the Hours is relatively under-recorded, compared to the flowering of recordings of chant in the Mass. The beauty of Westminster's chant touches us, as it moves along at a reflective, unhurried pace. It's accompanied by the organ, which is not authentic, but for many of us it's a guilty pleasure, and it's very well done here. The organ also comments on the psalmody in brief improvisations which are a pleasure in themselves.

Five stars aren't really enough to give justice to this fine recording. I can't recommend it highly enough.

        4 out of 5 stars Good Variety.......2005-12-19

The Shrine Choir sings very nicely for the most part on this recording. The variety of Marian texts and settings are interspersed with some organ improvisations. The are some really exquisite moments, such as "Virgin Great and Glorious" and Britten's "Hymn to the Virgin." The Reichwein "Ave Maris Stella" is the most tonally ambiguous work on the recording, and contributes an avant-garde element.

But perhaps in late-night recording sessions, some really poor vocalism has slipped inder the radar, notably in the Palistrina "Ave Maria."

Overall, the Shrine Choir has chosen the repertoire they do best and expoited it to full potential on this album. Certainly worth your fifteen bucks.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent choir; excellent music.......2002-07-30

First, you probably haven't heard of this group, the Soli Deo Gloria Cantorum. Think of them as a midwestern "farm team" for Norman Luboff. The Berkeys, Almeda (the conductor), and her husband Jackson (composer of the title piece) were good friends of Luboff. They lived in Nebraska, and Luboff suggested they create their own choir to do the same kind of music (and have the fun) that Luboff did. The SDG Cantorum was the result.

"Arma Lucis", the title cut of the recording, is a modern, but quite accessible work. Other selections include 5 spirituals, all arranged by Luboff, and a wide variety of other styles, from Lotti's Crucifixus from the early 18th century to a Kyrie by Knut Nystedt (circa 1970), and some early American music thrown in as well ("Chester" from the time of the American Revolution). The selections show off the versatility of the choir. They are well trained, with a solid tone, and are up to the demands of the wide range of music. Bruckner's "Christus Factus Est" and the spiritual "Wade in the Water" are especially thrilling....
