Falls short of past Fila Brazillia efforts..........2005-12-06
If this is the first Fila Brazilla CD you plan to purchase, PLEASE STOP and redirect your attention to earlier works (most notably "Touch Of Cloth"). Indeed I can't help but feel this album continues a trend started with the release of "Another Late Night" and continued through "Jump Leads". I long for the clever and classic sounds found on their many earlier albums and found myself cringing several times while listening to this cd. Having said that, there are 3 or 4 songs in the middle of the cd that I either liked, or feel might eventually grow on me. Sadly, 4 songs doesn't quite make a complete album. Here's to the old days!
THE LIFE AND TIMES OF...FILA BRAZILLIA!!!!.......2005-09-13
Just when you think these guys are at the top of their game musically, the amazing duo of Fila Brazillia comes out with a new group of original sounding tracks that surpass their previous releases. "The Life and Times of Phoebus Brumal" sounds like nothing else FB has done, offering the listener a vast array of organic funk, breakbeat, rock, house and yeeees even...(cringing)...rap--albeit the tolerable kind. I can't actually grasp the album concept just yet, but I'm satisfied in knowing that I have another CD from FB that I can enjoy over and over again, discovering something different each time I listen. Stand out tracks to me without a doubt are: "Romantic Adventure", "Madme Le Fevre", "Blowhole" and "In the Kingdom of Sound"...although each track is amazing in its own right. Highly Recommended!!!
Ambitious.......2004-12-15
The effort and ideas that went into this album are apllaudable, but many songs just seem a little too random in terms of the elements they bring in. I bought this cd for its fusion of jazzy melodies and a foot-tapping beat similar to St. Germain in "you won't let me rock". The group does phenomenally in the jazzy songs and organic jams but also likes to break it down into new-school electronica or rap (Papa V. sounds like someone I hear in Thievery Corporation)with lots of changes and effects.
another slammer.......2004-07-28
The Fila's are some sort of a mircale. It's hard to comprehend where those mega-producers get their ideas from - I mean they throw their stuff at the masses as if it's lying in their backyard. Yet every release is full of twists and turns that sound fresh and new and in a way unheard before. 'Pheobus' is another masterpiece...
...although it had to grow on me. At first I expected it to be a bit laid back. Well, although it's definitely downbeat it's not dozy a la K&D. Hanging out somewhere, resting your limbs, listening to some meditative beats - forget it! This album will have you on your feet flippin' away! Especially the first third of the album is devoted to fat drums and screaming guitars with 'Blowhole' being some sort of a climax. After that it goes into smoother waters...
My personal favourites are the pieces with blaring brass (namely 'Thatched Neon' and the ambient smasher 'Uberboff'). 'Madam Levefre' is one of the funkiest pieces of music I've heard this year.
Aynway, a great album. Again. Buy!

I'VE GOT FILA BRAZILLIA'S 'DICKS' IN MY HAND--"SNIGGLE"!!!.......2005-12-06
Once again UK phenom duo Fila Brazillia release the suggestively titled "Dicks" (sniggle) loaded full of...a-hem!! I'm not going there with that one--it may not get this review published. That being said, Steve Cobby and Dave McSherry have yet to run out of creative "juices" with this, their tenth release, plus a few remix CDs to boot. The songs on "Dicks" are a bit shorter than the oftentimes lengthy arrangements these boys dish out, but it doesn't make the music any less enjoyable or incredible. This go round the boys manage to employ the use of a harp and banjo, two instruments not closely related to electronica music. Nevertheless, Cobbs and McSherry pull it off in their "Fila Brazillian" style, bringing you still a multitude of funk, rock, soul and every other form of music in between. Now, excuse me while I go play with...My "Dicks"--couldn't resist.

Crystal Clear Saturation of Upbeat and Downtempo Talent.......2006-07-25
What a nice piece of work this is. Fila Brazilla this time bringing a rich and vibrant album with large hints of jazz elements and synthesized bliss. These guys are different and I like that about them. Upbeat at times and downtempo here and there. Excellent timing and composition. Never afraid to take the road less traveled.
A review for the sake of music.......2006-04-14
I'm only reviewing this album because if you are looking at this review, you've either stumbled upon Fila Brazillia, or perhaps heard some of their tracks.
If you own another fila album, and are looking for more of that amazing music you can't believe you just heard, buy all of their earlier material.
Everything this group touches is pure original excellence.

Wrapped in the cloths of gods.......2005-12-31
One can't deny Fila Brazillia their creative panache. Unaware or just plain giddy with sarcasm and happy feet they go about their merry way tossing funky beats, 70's TV riffs, and downtempo, chillout on its promontory head. Its like being on a carnival ride that changes direction on a whim - there are no rules. Who's to say? After six albums on the Hull based Pork Recordings, A Touch Of Cloth is their first on their 23 label, peeling off the last remaining restrictions. Their safe approach to a landing does have discipline though. Just when you think you're in the mire of a musical caldron, they reign in the outer banks and pull the sound into a quiet, sonic harbor. You are left with distinct feeling you are being had for their amusement purposes. A wicked sense of humor is a prerogative they have earned with their DJ remixes from the likes of Radiohead, Mellow, U.N.K.L.E., The Orb, Lamb, and the Irresistible Force.
Double-timing in additional musical projects should make this duo the busiest in Hull earning major props all around. If their uncanny and unorthodox methods seem mad at times, they should be applauded for the ability to coral these musical genres into a cohesive whole and bring home a quality product. If you eschew iconoclastic individualism, then by all means, please stay away. If you embrace them, start hugging. A Touch of Cloth was meant to keep you feeling all warm and fuzzy inside under any conditions. In a world gone crazy with homogenized products, Fila Brazillia continue to deliver, serving up the unique, the outstanding, the extra fine.
Slammin'.......2005-03-29
Some tunes on this album are simply outstanding. I've heard "Airlock Homes" tune on Rhapsody and it made me look up the name quickly. Wow, what a strange mix of influences and sounds this band has. Lots of electronics, but all have unique sounds and melodies. Whoever plays drums and bass on some tunes do it just right too. Whatever style it might be, you have to check it out for yourself if you into musical adventures. I also liked "Power Clown" and "maim that tune", some tunes on those sounded like classic already.
The world of Fila Brazillia.......2002-02-06
Although F.B. lack the popularity of Kruder&Dorfmeister and Thievery Corp., I'm sure you'll love this album the moment you put in your stereo.
Best described as lounge music. The tracks are calm and wise. Very pleasant melodies. Best for listening on headphones. Regulates blood pressure :)

While the international press seems to have covered every other electronica act but them, Fila Brazillia's Steve Cobby and Dave Pork have created some of the most lasting music in their hotly hyped genre. It's their playful indulgences, not to mention their smashing good taste, that make Fila so fine. The British duo maintain their majestic muse on their first-ever mix CD, Another Late Night, dropping aromatic funk, jazz, hip-hop, dub, and weird audio snippets in one of the best left-field releases of the year.
The record opens with John Barry's luscious "Persuader's Theme" before rolling through the Infesticons' rollicking old-school rap ("post my testicles on virtual e-mail"), Prince Alla's spacey dub crooning, Mr. Scruff's spooky '30s swing, the Beta Band's yawning stoner anthems, as well as tracks from a mangled cast that includes Marvin Gaye, Brian Eno, David Holmes, Nightmares on Wax, and Fila themselves on "Nature Boy." This is late-night, lost-attitude, can't-move music, a soundtrack for summertime bliss, going bonkers, or heading off to bed. --Ken Micallef
Customer Reviews:
Eclectic and Effective Mix CD.......2005-12-27
Interesting collection of musical styles, from ambient to dance to funk to rap. Despite the diversity of sounds, the cycle is mixed together beautifully. I didn't know any of the artists going in except the Beta Band, and I still loved it. The liner notes say it best; good mood stuff, great as a background selection after the clubs. "God bless the Infesticons, f*** the Majesticons!" Ya gotta love it.
Devious Downtempo.......2005-02-04
This CD is always in my car, and tracks 10 thru 15 (the funky, jazzy, mellow portion of the CD) help me fly thru 2am traffic the best. The only track i always seem to skip over is the Hero theme - of all the choices, why this? - and the Prelude & Fugue in C Minor. I'd rather this CD had gone out in a blaze of funk than that brain-drooling, wishy-washy note.
Full Spectrum.......2003-09-15
I bought this one quite sometime ago. I have a lot of respect for Fila Brazillia as their name speaks for itself. Well, at first it was a bit hard to fully get. There is so much on this disc that it is a bit overwhelming. After three years I catch myself still going ga ga over it. What a great choice of selections. I love the Brian Eno track. Not to mention the crucial reggae track they drop, wound up getting the whole record of that, I believe it was Prince Alla. Mr. Scruff is great. And I am not a real big rap fan or anything ( track 3) but I even like that track, it is entertaining and it isnt all in your face tough guy stuff which is all cliche these days. I like the whole record in its entirety. It is great for travelling, going for a long drive or walk or a trip in your own living room. Highly recommended.
Pretty Good.......2002-09-25
For the most part, I thought this was a good CD. I agree with whatisname in the review above that the track 3 rap is hideous, and there are occasionally goofy parts. The only necesary-skip-button-exertion track is that 3rd one, though. The Brian Eno track with Lebanese vocals is very cool, as well as the Persuaders theme and Mr. Scruff. It is a pretty interesting variety of tracks, really.
fila brasilliyaaaawn.......2002-06-02
I usually love their (Fila's) work, but as mixers on this compilation, they sort of put me to sleep. Since, I tend to listen and focus into the music, this proved a little frustrating as I passed it off as background ambience. Maybe this what they were going for???

MUST BE SOMETHING IN THE WATER THEY DRINK!!!!.......2005-09-14
What are these guys drinking? I ask that because each time Fila Brazillia come out, it's always something unique and amazing!!! Another Fine Mess is a collection of tracks that further showcase that FB are the kings of left-field funk, house, jazz and everything else in between. These aren't their own productions, but they definitely reek of their signature style--that being organic funk and tight rhythms with loads of UMMMF!!! Fila Brazillia have become my favorite group in a short period of time, and phenomenal stuff like that from Naab, Jolly Music and 12" Superstars are definitely worthy of me checking out.
a fine mess indeed.......2004-12-06
Yes this band is awful. I have heard their ablum attempts and it's just plain painful to listen too. There is a complete lack of originality regardless of what they say. They even write their own reviews. It's hilarious. They tried to bash me on my Blog with comments like "he has gaye eyes" and something about f*cking my mother in the basement. It was pretty lame they have even go so far as the threaten to "f*ck me up". All the while, writing in some crazy ebonics and butchering the spelling at the same time. I seriously think they all might me 12 and live w/ their parents, but I could be wrong. Anyhow I give this album one star for lack of orginality, talent, the ablitlty to spell, and ruining a chance to play decent music.
You guys are awesome.
Flawless.......2004-06-20
Let me say I have been a tremendous fan of the boys from Hull for about 10 years now and have come to expect greatness (the exception being the B-2 remix album). This album blew me away.... This is Fila spinning other artists' tracks yet this album simply towers above other mix cd's including Fila's own Another Late Night....I have never wanted to review a product before, but after listening to this album I felt truly compelled to get online and let others know....you will not be disappointed
The ball starts rolling once the play button is hit.......2004-02-20
2 words come to mind when I hear this album and that's "mind-blowing" to say the least. This new series is exactly what the doctor ordered and is an excellent contrast to it's lighter side (late night tales) now.The selection of grooves hit the spots right on everytime and to me this exceeds even Fc Kahuna's start to this series. Buy it you won't regret it.

Fila Brazillia - Music how its meant to be........2002-01-25
This band are simply outstanding, they know there stuff and they make awesome music. If you like Chillout, then please please please, buy this, you can't be disappointed, it simply is a masterpiece. It is such a shame more people don't know about them. I first heard of them when I heard there "Another Late Night" Compliation album and knew straight away that this group were special. And now hearing there own music you just can't help but be wowed with the sounds these guys produce in there music.
This really is a great album, listen enjoy repeat...
Free the funk.......2001-02-26
It's about time that Fila Brazillia got out of their underground status. They R great, just like this cd. I already had "Brazillification" ( the double cd with the remixes ) and after a long time I've finally bought this one, and I'm glad I did.
It's a mix of all sorts of things ; techno, ambient, trip hop, world ( lovely percussion and stuff ), funk, jazzy stuff and lots of voice samples,...
Sometimes it's just like the songs go on forever. And sometimes they do... "The Sheriff" is a jam that goes on about 16 minutes or something.
For me, the two stand out tracks R "Mermaids" and "The Sheriff".
Blown away.......2001-02-17
This CD is my first excusion into the world of Fila Brazillia. They have been in my consciousness for a long time, but a never quite got around to making a purchase.
How foolish!
Old Codes, New Chaos is sublime. The mix of influences is as broad as the horizon, and the use of samples is very intelligent.
It is very hard to pigeon-hole Fila into a musical category, so I wont even try.
But, to give you some clue, it will appeal to anyone with an eclectic taste, that enjoys electronica without being wedded to it.
And the comparisons? The crisp sounds of Orbital, the samples of The Orb, the beats of William Orbit, the melodies of the Stone Roses.
Praise indeed.
Come to me Fila Brazillia, take control of my CD player!
Really great........2000-08-31
I think the thing that sets this disc apart from the other Fila releases is that it rarely if ever falls into the repetitiousness of some of the later songs. The sound is far more sparse, but just as funky and satisfying as the later releases.
Fila's first and smoothest album.......1999-03-06
One of the first artist albums to be released by the ultra-underground and under-hyped UK label, Pork, "Old Codes/New Chaos" remains perhaps the best chill-out house album to ever be released. In short, it's a classic. But if you need a little more convincing, then read on. Fila Brazillia's use of voice narratives--ranging from documentary descriptions of LSD government testing, the nature of money, and a criminal's confession--brilliantly links the instrumental music with fascinating ideas and impressions. Ranging from the supremely eerie to the unbelievably funky, Fila Brazillia offer a musical vision unseen perhaps since "Dark Side of the Moon." The deep grooves of "Whose Money" and "Brazilification," the dreamy trip-hop of "The Sheriff," and the epic funk explosion of "Pots & Pans," take the listener through highs and lows of landscape and velocity. Their influences and interpretations are awe-inspiring; ranging from jazz, acid-jazz, funk, soul, latin, brazillian, house, hip-hop, opera, etc... If you love music and you've opened your eyes to the endless possibilities of nineties dance, this album will certainly be a fresh surprise. Of course, even if the mainstream press did realize that Fila Brazillia are god's gift to modern music, Steve Cobby and Man McSherry, the men behind this music, probably wouldn't care and they'd probably disagree. This is one for the Do-it-Yourself visionaries and artists that are certainly more resourceful and more aplenty than mainstream pop and entertainment corporations would have us believe.

At first play, the eighth album by Fila Brazillia's Steve Cobby and Dave McSherry seems to have lost the invigorating flow of past records like Black Market Gardening and Power Clown. Arriving after the aromatic hip-hop, jazz, and dub of Fila's recent mix record, Another Late Night, the first half of Jump Leads, by contrast, sounds like one synth with only five presets working overtime. The tracks use similar jerking funk beats and cheesy '80s keyboard effects, creating a faux electro club sound. "Bumblehaun" and "Motown Coppers" bounce clumsily to the disco but are trumped by "Spill the Beans," which sounds like a drunken man fronting The Commodores. The mood remains static until "It's a Knockout," which thankfully rescues Leads with an airy Brazilian groove, John Barry-ish harpsichord, trumpet flourishes, and an eerie African vocal sample. After the brooding "Monk's Utterance," the fun continues with soaring Afro-boogaloo vibrations on "Percival Quintaine" and a glowing African folk choir on the wondrous "Mother Nature's Spies." Not as overwhelmingly satisfying as earlier efforts, Jump Leads extends FB's muse with mixed results. --Ken Micallef
Album Description
Considered a pre-cursor to the downbeat and trip hop movement, Fila Brazillia have explored the relationship between organic instrumentation and electronic sensibility throughout the 90's arriving logically at 'Jump Leads'. As pioneers of a post-punk northern England musicality, their journey has been defined simply by their musical insight rather than genre specification. Dub rhythms, house beats, drum n' bass syncopation, ambient chords, and funk arrangements have all found their way into Fila's sound without falling into the cliched territory of 'eclecticism'. 23 Records/Studio K7. 2002.
Customer Reviews:
Mere delight for intellectual snobs!!!.......2003-07-18
Fila's Jump Leads is absolutely excellent. However to comprehend it, you'll definitely need a large musical background. You have to have a grain of that old notorious British sense of humour as well to really enjoy this album.
It's amazing - a mere delight to your mind and senses. Truly complicated and at the same time easy to listen to. It's an enjoyable labyrinth of sounds and tunes you feel you know from somewhere else. Fila Brazillia are truly great jugglers. There are many melody and rhythm 'winks' to a good number of fellow musicians. I could not but smile when recognized FB's picking at Lenny Cravitz, Air, Plaid.
The texts may give a pretty good time too. The drumbeats, basslines, synths and strings are really exquisite.
Though there is practically everything in this album, Fila manage to hold it their style - smart, slightly hushed, mild and moody.
One of the rarest treasures for the mind music searchers.
Trippy synth stuff.......2003-07-10
If you like jazzy electronica as I do then you will probably enjoy this CD. It is not exactly ground breaking work, or earth shaterring music that will leave you stunned but it is good enough. It is one of those change of pace discs in the rotation where the skip button might be used; in other words not every track is a winner. Let's be honest, what one person likes is not necessarily what another may like. If the vocals don't appeal to you there are enough dreamy bits of music to set your mind floating into the neither neither land of audio bliss. Some of the music sounds dated but most of it is revitalized to create a modern ambience that is a laid back groove. This is the type of music that flows through you and then suddenly grabs you with some imaginative musical passages. "DNA" is one such track where the unassuming sythns suddendly are highlighted by world beat tribal like vocals that grab your attention and make you listen closer. "We build arks" is a bit of soulful singing that has an acid jazz feel and works remarkably well for my tastes. The said song has a retro feel, sort of a Earth Wind and Fire revisted. Another song with vocals is "Nightfall" and it has a trip hop jazzy feel that compliments the soulful vocals that are quite pleasing. The instrumental songs are dominant throughout (7 of 11 tracks) and sound even better with headphones to catch all the little details of the studio. The last song on the disc, entitled "The Green Green Grass of Homegrown" sounds a little country, almost folkish, complete with harmonica and accordian and is a rather odd song to include on the disc but somehow works as a fitting ending to a disc of mixed variety. All in all it is a pretty decent CD, not a complete musical statement but rather a fragmented album with hits and misses. Not exactly the place to start with Fila Brazillia but it does showcase the diversity of these two musians and programmers.
NOT BAD...NOT BAD AT ALL!!.......2003-05-24
It usually takes me some time to write an online review...I have to actually give myself time to "feel" the CD before I can give an accurate and objective review. Not this CD though. "Jump Leads" had me hooked and loving it at the very beginning! I have always been a fan of Fila Brazilia's music since I first heard "A Zed and Two L's" and this is my first CD from them, actually my second CD --I did buy "Another Late Night with Fila Brazilia" but somebody stole it-- "Jump Leads" is an eclectic set of songs that range from R & B to funk to jazz to country to disco to pop to world and rock...I'm big on multi-genre music on CDs and "Jump Leads" has it. Songs that bare repeated listening are "Bumblehaum","Nightfall", "Motown Coppers","Spill the Beans", "We Build Arks" and "Mother Nature's Spies." Whether or not you care for these particular favorites of mine, you'll definitely find your song on this CD. Very impressive!!
An Extremely Fun and Diffrent Taste of Fila.......2003-02-13
Fila have done so well to ellude thier listeners as to what kind of sound they'll make next, that the down- and mid tempo electronic listener could saturate them self in Fila's back catologue for years in constant maintenence of thier impressions. Few groups ever afford a listener the pleasure of being taken in new directions with that same very distinct energy they always had. This album does lack the dynamics of previous albums like "PowerClown" and "Maim That Tune" but I feel the extreme change is warented from a group that has always seemed to progress its sound.
This particular slice of Fila operates in groove laden psychedellia that gives us even for a first time vocals and lyrics that give us an acid bent album of an almost disco-hip hop sound. As always, there is the funk-hop slabs of beats Fila never fails to provide. The profound manouvers Fila have always given us opperate in such delightful fun that you can never help but admire thier unique musicianship.
This new sound will most likely develop into another awesome work surely as Fila have always progressed through an out with the old in with the new integrity. 4 1/2 stars!!!
What happened to these guys...........2002-09-06
i am a huge pork fan[though i believe they are still on tritone now]. and fila used to be one of their best on the label! old codes new chaos is still a HUGE album, it holds up against all kinds of electronic music today. luck be a weirdo...they used to be fantastic.
and now i feel they've taken it to a new low...power clown was what seemed to be experimental...then touch of cloth seemed to bring it back. but jump leads is aweful!
the album opens with a style they just don't do well. it almost seems as though they are jumping on the boards of canada band wagon with the sounds they chose....and in track 9 nightfall, the blatant use of korg ms2000 presets "icefield" is just plain bad. it doesn't even fit the track.
granted there are some really good moments on the album. but they are just that...moments. ex: the 6:29 - 6:50 mark of nightfall. awesome. but what is with the line "from my belly....my rotund belly"? so i could not give it a better rating than what i did.
fila are amazing...they should just stick to what they do best.
sorry i was so hard on em....i was just massively disappointed.
