Worth a listen.......2006-09-03
They had just one British number 1. That was their first release, I'm Into Something Good. This Goffin/King song is very characteristic of the time, with its teen-love lyrics and catchy tune, and remains the trademark Hermits song. The other tracks are a mixed bunch. The arrangement and harmony singing on Years May Come, Years May Go are embarrassingly trite. Equally ludicrous are the ill-judged attempts to scramble onto the social comment bandwagon, with The Man With The Cigar and Here Comes the Star. But when they stick to tuneful, unpretentious pop, like I'm Into Something Good and Sunshine girl, they are well worth a listen. Track 8, disk 1 (Dream On Dream On) and track 21, disk 2 (I Gotta Dream On) is actually the same, the former being a remastered version. The Noone 1971 solo, Oh You Pretty Thing is interesting because it features the song's writer, David Bowie, on piano.
They were never Herman's Happy Hermits, as a look at the rival websites of Noone and Whitwam will testify. The Hermits were talented and wanted to progress musically. Instead, they remained the backing to Noone's frothy pop. Briefly, in the sixties, they billed themselves as Peter Noone and Herman's Hermits, betraying the behind-the-scenes disputes. Today, groups headed by Noone and Whitwam still appear separately and very confusingly as rival Herman's Hermits.
Peter Noone (Herman) was a child star of a British soap set in his native Manchester. His was a cheeky, cheerful, chirpy appeal, and any picture of him not grinning broadly would have been dismissed as a forgery. Last I heard, he was in a daytime soap stateside, and still going strong.
It was in Manchester that I saw actor Trevor Peacock in Waiting For Godot and it comes as quite a shock to learn that he wrote the Herman's hit Mrs Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter. This was one of a trio of quaintly British novelty songs - along with Leaning on a Lampost and I'm Henery the Eighth I Am - that were the mainstay of their US success but were quite rightly never released as singles in the UK. There, they would have been seen as old material that had already been performed better by other artists. George Formby fans in particular will consider the Herman's version of Lampost as nothing short of sacrilege.
It was another irritatingly cheerful Mancunian with a permanent grin and limited singing talent, Davey Jones of The Monkees, who spelled the end of the Hermits' US success. The market was not big enough for both of them.
Despite these negative comments, the Hermits were an essential part of the sixties scene and this is a comprehensive, good quality, good value collection of their work. So it gets 5 stars and a 'relax, enjoy it, but don't expect it to change your life' recommendation.
A GREAT CD FOR A GREAT 60;S BAND UNDERRATED.......2006-07-30
And to those of you that haven't had the privilege of seeing Peter Noone in concert then or now, you should be very pleased after seeing the energy and fun the Herman and the (new) Hermits project live in concert. Well worth going to.

With his thick British accent and schoolboy good looks, singer Peter Noone carried Herman's Hermits through a string of '60s hits. From the swooning romanticism of "There's a Kind of Hush," to the bubblegum bop of "Into Something Good," to the quirky novelty of "I'm Henry VIII, I Am," The Best of Herman's Hermits gathers some of the Hermits' most memorable moments. Noone brought an undeniable charm to songs like "Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter," regardless of the hokey lyrics. One of the more innocent bands of the British Invasion, Herman's Hermits made contemporary music seem safe with "Listen People," "Silhouettes," and "Wonderful World." "The End of the World" remains one of the all-time great breakup songs, made all the more maudlin by Noone's heartbroken delivery. --Steve GdulaCustomer Reviews:
Herman's Hermits greatest hits volume 2.......2007-06-28
A golden nugget of an album--BRAVO, HERMAN'S HERMITS!!!.......2007-06-04
The CD starts with "Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter;" this number features them singing about a love that has gone wrong. Despite the somewhat melancholy lyrics the musical arrangement remains upbeat and full of positive pop energy. "No Milk Today" sports a classic 1960s pop vocal feel to it as again they explore the subject of a love that no longer exists. The percussion enhances the beauty of this number, too! Great!
This CD boasts a great number of true hits that put Herman's Hermits on the map from 1964 on--indeed, they are remembered fondly to this day for these ballads. "End Of The World" features Peter Noone, their lead singer, singing marvelously about the devastation he feels now that his woman has left him; the mellow and "light" feel to the melody stuns you with its moving rhythms.
Of course Herman's Hermits also sang countless happier songs that hit the top of many charts. "This Door Swings Both Ways" and "Just A Little Bit Better" reflect youthful optimism about relationships; and "I'm Henry The VIII, I Am" takes this theme even further with a vaudeville-type of playful celebration a young man feels when he is in love. "I'm Henry The VIII, I Am" has a great `60s rock beat to it, too. Excellent!
"There's A Kind Of Hush All Over The World" celebrates the joys of love; and this number has one of the sweetest musical arrangements I've ever heard. The members of the band do great back up vocals as Peter Noone sings this without a superfluous note. "I'm Into Something Good" continues this theme but this song has a distinctly rock flavor to the melody; the lyrics charm you and you will find this number very enjoyable.
"(What A) Wonderful World" celebrates the joy of love from the perspective of someone who doesn't have the most formal education but knows perfectly well anyway when a love is right between him and his woman. The joy and playfulness of this song is refreshingly honest, cute and the catchy melody will leave you humming this tune all day!
The CD track set ends with a ballad about a woman who only gives her men trouble and heartache; the rock flavor seems to be superimposed over a pop type of song and this combination works quite well on this number. "A Must To Avoid" provides this CD with a strong ending.
The liner notes include a couple of essays about Herman's Hermits and the artwork of the group reflects forethought and good judgment.
Overall, Herman's Hermits enjoyed an all too brief role in the massive "British Invasion" of English music entering America during the 1960s. This CD proves that Herman's Hermits had a distinct sound of their own that could charm the birds right out of the trees and make young women swoon. I highly recommend this CD for fans of this group; and fans of music from the 1960s will enjoy this CD, too. Moreover, people who like classic pop vocals will thrill to numbers like "Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter;" "There's A Kind Of Hush All Over The World;" "I'm Into Something Good" and more on this CD.

With her beguiling presence, Angela Lansbury belts out the playful lyrics of Jerry Herman's 1966 musical, Mame, based on the hilarious and outrageous Patrick Dennis novel Auntie Mame. Lansbury plays the ribald flapper Mame, bucking her age and station to live her life as she pleases, with her young nephew Patrick in bewildered tow. Lansbury's mature yet chipper singing voice is perfectly complemented by the vocals of Bea Arthur as Mame's best friend, Vera. Arthur's hearty, irascible voice adds a classic edge to the lighthearted musical fare, while Frankie Michaels as Patrick provides a youthful purity, conveying an awe and admiration for the aunt he follows through life. The relentlessly carefree theme of this musical diminishes as Mame ages and Patrick grows up, but they are singing zestfully to the end. The 1999 remastered version includes five demo recordings by Herman and Alice Borden, with Herman at the piano. --Bryony AngellCustomer Reviews:
Mame.......2007-07-05
An exciting score that twists and turns with the muscial plot even if a bit dated--and one great big campy YES !!!.......2007-06-15
The CD has all of the songs from Mame performed by the original Broadway cast; and these songs were recorded just a few days after the show opened in 1966 for record album release. Angela Lansbury's voice is rich, warm and full of feminine energy; and Bea Arthur fits in perfectly as Mame's friend Vera Charles; Bea's performance on this CD glistens like gold.
The CD track set opens with a rousing overture that gives you a musical collage of the show's major tunes; and the flawless arrangement stuns you with its beauty. Mame quickly establishes herself as THE expert in how to enjoy life as Angela Lansbury sings "It's Today" with a great male chorus in the background. Angela delivers "It's Today" with panache and her excellent diction helps to make this number a memorable one. Mame's fresh, exciting and positive outlook on life is reinforced by the next song entitled "Open A New Window." Mame sings this song to her young nephew Patrick to teach him the importance of always trying new things to keep yourself young while enjoying your life at the same time.
Other great songs from this score include the enchanting ballad Mame's nephew Patrick sings to her to cheer her up after a play Mame is in doesn't work out well; Frankie Michaels and Angela Lansbury sing "My Best Girl" to perfection! The musical arrangement makes good use of the strings and the chimes add a nice touch. "We Need A Little Christmas" is another rousing number performed by Angela Lansbury as they decorate the house to distract themselves from the pain of the stock market crash of 1929; and "Bosom Buddies" gets the royal treatment from Angela Lansbury and Bea Arthur. "Bosom Buddies" plays with the tempo and makes a few key changes to produce a snappy number that still sounds fresh today, even if a line or two is dated.
"If He Walked Into My Life" is a more pensive, introspective ballad sung by Mame as she wonders if she raised her nephew well; Angela Lansbury sings this without a superfluous note and all the sensitivity this great ballad demands.
In addition to the electrifying finale, we also get five bonus tracks that were never released before this CD was produced. The five tracks feature Jerry Herman at the piano. (Warning: Jerry Herman can't sing.) Jerry sings "St. Bridget" with some alternate lyrics, a song cut from the production entitled "Camouflage" with Alice Borden; a somewhat more stately interpretation of "Open A New Window" and "Mame."
Which brings me to the song entitled "Mame." The arrangement shows forethought and the lyrics work well enough. However, some of the lyrics are rather embarrassingly outdated, for example: "The South Will Rise Again???" I don't think that line and quite a few others from this number would work in our times. And they shouldn't, either.
Another disappointment is that Jerry Herman songs tend to have endless choruses which simply repeat the lyrics to the main verse. This shortcoming remained an obstacle for Jerry Herman; even in his much later shows like La Cage Aux Folles this pattern remains quite evident.
Overall, however, the score to Mame works very well and when you listen to this CD there is no mystery as to how the musical lasted over five years on Broadway. Angela Lansbury couldn't have been more perfect for the role of Mame as she can belt out her songs with panache, sensitivity and warmth all at once. The other cast members perform flawlessly as well.
I recommend this CD for fans of Broadway show tunes. People who enjoyed seeing the musical on Broadway will also enjoy this digitally remastered CD with its five bonus tracks of Jerry Herman at the piano.

A classic example of Broadway's heyday..........2006-10-24
In spite of the strong supporting cast, the showstopper here, without a question, is Ms. Lansbury. Her stellar vocals make such tracks as "It's Today," "Open A New Window," and "That's How Young I Feel" simply ooze with charisma and charm. Her performance is, for all intents and purposes, flawless as she portrays the role of a flapper fighting against time to remain as young and vibrant as she possibly can.
Arthur and others round out the supporting cast and belt out fantastic numbers including the humorous "The Man in the Moon," the brilliantly energetic "Mame," and the biting but funny "Bosom Buddies" (with Lansbury). These exciting ditties meld seamlessly with the lead tunes performed by Lansbury, all making for a great collection of songs that paints the era in music as if each word were paint on an artist's brush.
If you're a fan of modern Broadway and are curious to know where some of its older roots lay, then MAME is an ideal place to begin your listening experience. This is Broadway in the classic style; it doesn't get much better than this, folks. Very highly recommended.
Mame is fantastic.......2006-08-07

Sitting in the balcony at the final preview of this 1964 Jerry Herman show, still very much in school and long before my career as a critic began, I knew somehow that I was witnessing theatrical history. Even as that callow youth, I was certain that Carol Channing had been born to play the role of Dolly Gallagher Levi, the meddling turn-of-the century New York widow who had been adapted from Thornton Wilder's straight play The Matchmaker. Channing has proved me right by playing the role ever since, of course, miraculously only improving with age. Beyond Dolly herself, however, the musical emitted a synergistic exuberance (at least five years before we used the word "synergy"). The supporting cast, including David Burns, Eileen Brennan, and Charles Nelson Reilly, were terrific. Herman's tunes and lyrics were sublimely crafted both to create their characters and stand alone. (The title song took on a life of its own.) The show's designers, librettist Michael Stewart and director Gower Champion, combined to transport the audience to 60 years earlier in little old New York. This wasn't all just my opinion: Hello, Dolly! won a record 10 Tonys. The original cast recording can still take you to that other time and place, even if you didn't see the original show. But, at the risk of offending my inner adolescent, the 1994 revival, naturally starring Channing, was even better--both on stage and on disc. --Robert WindelerCustomer Reviews:

Goodbye, Dolly!.......2005-10-30
For starters, this is not the classic musical that afficianados would have you believe, nor is it Jerry Herman at his best (that honor goes to "Mame"). Rather, this is a fair to middling score with three socko numbers (title tune not included), three rather fine songs (title song included) and the rest either average or inadequate. "Put On Your Sunday Clothes" and "Before the Parade Passes By" are two of the most galvanizing songs ever written for the Broadway stage and no singer can detract from their euphoric energy (though Carol Channing tries -- more on that later). "So Long, Dearie", though slower in tempo than Barbra Streisand's definitve rendition, is a showstopping character song that's both clever and compelling. These three numbers are what gives "Dolly" it's class and they are three of the best things Herman ever wrote. Then we have "Dancing", "Elegance" and (gulp!) the by now overly familiar title song, each an accomplished tune that propels the plot with, well, elegance. The song "Hello, Dolly!" may now annoy as a Broadway warhorse, but it was as fresh as daffodils when it first premiered. The rest of the score, sadly, isn't up to these standards. "It Takes a Woman" and "It Only Takes a Moment" are indistinguished at best, and "Ribbons Down My Back" is downright annoying. Worse still, "I Put My Hand In" is a lackluster opener that pales in comparison to "Just Leave Everything to Me", its replacement in the movie and a bonifide Jerry Herman rouser. And "Motherhood" sounds like exactly what it was, a stage wait for the scenery to move in. Totally expendable.
The second problem here is that this may be the worst sung original cast recording in Broadway history. Charles Neslon Reilly's wobbly tenor struggles to maintain pitch, Eileen Brennan's stilted soprano sounds more like light operetta than musical comedy, and David Burns makes his movie counterpart, Walter Matthau, sound like Mario Lanza in comparision. Then there is Dolly, the incomprehensibly overrated Carol Channing. From her first froggy notes in "I Put My Hand In" you know it's going to be rough sledding and, sure enough, she croaks and screeches her way through one song after another, rendering most of what she sings unlistenable. Channing's voice is thin, harsh and completely unequalized throughout its range and she effectively saps all of the charm out of "...Sunday Clothes" and "Parade". By the time the recording has ended, you want to banish this CD to a deserted island. But wait, there's more! An almost unrecognizable Mary Martin starts the "extras" on this disc with a shock. Some of her last recordings, these "Dolly" numbers unfortunately display how Martin's once lovely instrument had deepened and thickened over the years. A full throttle but somewhat tremulous Ethel Merman fairs little better on some poorly recorded songs added to the show when she took over. These two giants actually make the songs Pearl Bailey does on this disc seem all the more astonishing. While arguably not as talented as Martin or Merman (although, in reconsidering this recording and her career, I think I'm entirely wrong in that observation), Bailey hits a home run on each of her renditions and her recording of the title song is absolutely definitive. Someone should quickly get the cast recording of her "Dolly" back in circulation. "She" and "we" deserve it.
The final problen here is a lengthy recent interview with Ms. Channing that has to be heard to be believed. Does she actually think we're buying the idea that she was doing high kicks in the studio while recording her songs? Please! She barely catches her breath between phrases. And her comparing her premonition that the show would be a hit to a passage in the bible is as laughable as it is sacriligious. Yes, she may have done the show over 5000 times, but she lucked into a classic without earning her own classic status. No wonder all she could do was repeat herself for the rest of her career. Stick with Streisand.
And I guess from the reviews of THIS review, disliking Channing is sacriligous. I better watch my back.
Toxically Corny!!!!.......2005-01-22
I've even asked people who DO like B'way what is the deal with her? I hear it's that she has charisma. OK, since when does charisma equal talent (I honestly believe they are NOT the same thing).
And I have even tried to listen to other musicals over the years, and I just CANNOT get the appeal of it on ANY level! I guess this is well-done as these things go (there is work involved), but I just CANNOT understand what the fuss is all about.
Signed,
One perplexed Owl.

The delightful pairing of Robert Preston and Bernadette Peters headlines the 1974 cast of Mack and Mabel. Despite a distinguished pedigree of composer-lyricist Jerry Herman, director Gower Champion, and producer David Merrick, the show ran only 66 performances on Broadway due to an unwieldy and tragic plot about the doomed romance of silent-movie maven Mack Sennett, creator of the Keystone Kops (Preston), and star Mabel Normand (Peters)--which won't prevent you from enjoying this CD. Herman's score evokes the old silents (the banjo is particularly welcome), and the songs include "When Mabel Comes in the Room" (a welcoming song that is a direct descendant of Herman's "Hello Dolly"), the sprightly "Tap Your Troubles Away," Peters's defiant "Wherever He Ain't," and "Time Heals Everything," a gorgeous ballad that Peters subsequently made into a staple of her solo performances. Both Preston and Peters were nominated for Tony Awards, as was the show. The CD includes extensive production notes and a synopsis, but no lyrics. --David HoriuchiCustomer Reviews:

Herman's Hermits - 'Very Best Of Herman's Hermits' (EMI).......2006-06-19
Tremendous Charm.......2006-01-22
Truth be told, it was really Noone who made the band; although the rest of the boys certainly appeared on stage with Noone, they were seldom used to any extent in the recordings that made Herman's Hermits such an unqualified success on both sides of the Atlantic during the "English Invasion." Noone had a rather plantive voice with working-class accents and he gave his vocals a light touch, eschewing long notes, high notes, and other showy expressions--and the result was almost conversational and truly charming.
Then as now, tastes in music differed between England and America, and while Herman's Hermits scored numerous hits in both countries during the 1960s they were not always the same ones. This inexpensive compilation makes the best of worlds, presenting most of the bands hits regardless of on which side of the Atlantic they occurred. While both American and English listeners will recognize a good chunk of the songs, each will discover ones they never knew existed.
In terms of sound, the recordings date from the 1960s and they show it, but they've been brushed up quite a bit for this release and the result is a nice if not always top-notch sound. Whatever the case, it's all a lot of innocent, 1960s pop fun, and while it may not convert modern youth to the sound, those who recall the band's glory days will enjoy it greatly.
