Xavier Naidoo -- should get US Radio Airplay.......2004-06-24

In 1998 and 1999 I traveled to Germany, and stayed in the country for almost three months. I found the music on the radio refreshing. I also discovered that a few American artists had collaborated with European singers/groups on some fabulous recordings. On German music television, I saw a Missy Elliot/MC Solaar collaboration on 'Bills'. [I became a fan of MC Solaar a few years before while on vacation in Paris]; DJ Tekk & Flava Flav (of Public Enemy Fame) rhymed on a song with the hook 'NY to Germany.' The video looked like it was filmed on the rooftops and streets of either Brooklyn or Manhattan. But, the most impressive artist that came across of Xavier Naidoo. His voice is very haunting, and if you ever get a chance to listen to his version of David Bowie's 'This is not America', you will get hooked on him. Since 1999, I've been telling people about him. I found out that a clerk who used to work at the now closed HMV store in Harlem was also a fan of Xavier Naidoo. He indicated that he was trying to get Naidoo's CDs' into the store, but that his manager was not biting. After becoming interested in Xavier Naidoo, I found out about Pelham 3 productions, and Sabrina Seltur and others. These artists should be performing in the U.S. and we should hear them on radio and see their videos.

The fact that Rza has recorded with him is simply fantastic. Maybe, the doors, our ears, and our minds will finally open to artists from around the world who have so much soul as we do.

A song for everthing.......2004-04-05

No matter if you feeling down or happy you can listen to this track repeatedly. I have his double Cd but this song is just jammin. You don't have to understand German you just feel the beat, which incredible. You feel it in your heart.

Amazing!.......2003-12-14

This Xavier Naidoo is a bit hard to figure out. A German with Southafrican parents, living in Germany, singing Christian music mostly in German but also in English and collaborating with Wu-Tang's RZA???

This track is amazing vocally and the entire arrangement. The German lyrics do not come across as forced, but work! I am going to have to check out much more from Xavier Naidoo and have to wonder why he is a complete unknown in the US and a superstar in Europe. This is from a yet to be released album by RZA, I believe.

Soul searching.......2003-09-03

This song is simply amazing. You don't need to speak German to understand it. It's one song that truely speaks to your soul. RZA's beats are amazing and Xavier Naidoo's voice blends perfectly....trust me you'll find your self listening to it on repeat contemplating the meaning of love.

Loewe was a contemporary of Schubert, and his output of songs and ballads seems to have been on a similarly large scale. He even set Goethe's Erlkoenig, and at one time there was a fashion to prefer his version to Schubert's masterpiece. This prompted a typically supercilious defence of Schubert from Tovey, always one to praise famous men, but I have heard Loewe's setting and I have no difficulty with Tovey's point of view in general.

Erlkoenig is not included in this recital of 17 numbers by a variety of authors. Most are ballads, a type of poetry for which I have had a lifelong weakness. The themes of love and death figure prominently, and I imagine it would be hard to put together any representative selection of ballads in any language where that was not so. Others are various kinds of lyrics, including translations of Byron and a German setting of three verses from St John's gospel. The choice of religious texts is admirably ecumenical, one poem relating to a miracle associated with the Blessed Virgin, another to a miraculous escape by the Prophet and a companion from their pursuers, and I suppose that the sentiment in the ninth item, (one of the Byron translations), could be fairly described as Zionist. I find the selection to be judicious and as well varied as the material permits, my own partiality being strongly for the touching and affecting ballads. The music is simple and attractive throughout. The liner-note (anonymous but pretty obviously a translation from German) is slightly hectoring in the way it tells us what to think, and while I quite agree that Loewe does not deserve neglect I don't perceive him as any serious rival to Schubert either.

I think you would be very surprised if I had much criticism to make of Fischer-Dieskau, and indeed I have none at all. The beautiful voice, the meticulous artistry and the sense of belief and commitment are here as surely as in his renderings of Schubert or Wolf. Hartmut Hoell is a fairly unremarkable accompanist, but this is not music that cries out for Gerald Moore, and I have no problems in that quarter either. The recording does everyone justice, and I recommend this disc warmly to music lovers interested in this attractive byway of German Lied who may balk slightly at becoming involved with it in a more wholesale way.
