Consistently and superbly musical.......2004-05-17

There is little more one could ask for in these buoyant, dramatic, glowing and felicitous performances by cellist Lynn Harrell and pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy. They simply take off because of their marvelously unforced style of play, which at various moments can be commanding, poetic and even aristocratic. Both soloists also manifest an extremely satisfying instrumental tone, especially Harrell, whose cello sounds absolutely golden, and who frequently demonstrates the ability to truly sing and soar. And with Ashkenazy's wonderfully fluid approach, the two offer readings that, for me, outdo Rostropovich/Richter and Tortelier/Heidsieck, who both present fine offerings. Though Rostropovich possesses that wonderful, big sounding tone, in these sonatas he tends to pass over phrases too quickly for me. I prefer a bit of lingering here. At times, Richter also plays too fast. With regard to the Tortelier/Heidsieck duo, they tend to render marginally more extended pauses, deliberate accents and a slower, more deliberate pace. Also, while an excellent cellist, Tortelier lacks Harrell's opulent tone that I so revel in. There are so many satisfying moments in this Harrell/Ashkenazy set that it would take me longer than I would like to point them out, but listen, in particular, to the splendid opus 69 Third Sonata. Perhaps, this represents the two players at their finest in terms of both quality of expressiveness and instrumental interplay. Some real magic unfolds here. Overall, you will find it difficult to do better than these uplifting and extremely pleasurable accounts of these musical gems from Beethoven. Incidentally, the recorded sound on these discs is very fine, and exceeds that which is afforded the others in their presentations.

I thought I was going to hear Sonatas for Cello Solo,
Like the Suites By Bach...
I Quickly fell in love with the Cello Sonatas, esspecially
the last three...
And what a Beautiful surprise it was to hear the Magnificent
and Charming Horn Sonata Op. 17 !
The Three Musicians Play extremly well!
esspecially Ashkenazy with his light touch
and Tuckwell with his inthusiastic (I hope I spelled it right)

A truly wonderful recording,with the right combination of technical perfection coupled with emotion. And the addition of the Opus 17 Horn sonata was a good choice. Ashkenazy and Harrell are in top form (as is Tuckwell). This collection is an absolute must.

Pleasant music to listen to.......2003-10-25

I am just begining my appreciation for classical music and bought this cd pair to help me begin. I truely enjoy it while doing yard work, cross stiching, studying, or going to sleep. I have not noticed the hissing that other people have complained about, but I do believe that this is not the best quality cd. There have been many times when the second disc would not even work, like the player couldn't read it. This was very frustrating, so I mainly stick with the first disk. I would not recomend this cd, however, I would recomend the music. If you can find these songs on another disc, get it, you will find some time in your daily routine that it will fit right in with.

Adagios are beautiful and represent the depth of the composer. However, as one reviewer stated before me, the sound quality is poor. Some pieces have to compete with the hiss to be played as they should be at normal volumes. I hope that another label can come out with such a stunning array of adagios but with a much improved sound quality.

This is sold as a DDD recording but some of the recordings are over forty years old and hiss like a snake. This should be categorized under 'Historical Recordings'

Amazing Grace.......2000-09-14

Over 2 hours of emotionally uplifting music from the master of romanticism. This 2 CD album include all his best like Moonlight Sonata, well worth your money. It's wonderful to listen to at work or while studying at home for an exam.

Beautiful & Original.......2006-02-04

Buoyed by the success of their single 'Eloise', an international smash hit (though not in the USA), Paul & Barry set about to create a classic album to go with the single.
What they created was 'Barry Ryan Sings Paul Ryan' & it appeared in the shops in early 1969. A long luscious collection of songs done in a style that I think I can get away with calling 'Baroque Pop'. Lots of strings and warm melodies about love and girls with long hair. Barry had one of the most under-rated pop voices of '60's London, swinging from shrill and girlie for the choruses and confidently masculine fro the lead vocals and everything else in-between.
A lot of the songs don't really make a lot of sense. This is very post-Procul Harum Sgt.Pepper era music. All the songs fall into each other. The fact that they often don't make a lot of sense doesn't matter. It's the sound and the quality of the tunes that will take you swirling back to 1969.
In reference to this CD, the sound reproduction is as good as anything I've heard. So often '60's music, reproduced on CD, sounds so inferior to the original production. This is absolutely NOT the case here.
The second album Paul & Barry produced, simply entitled: 'Barry Ryan,' although very beautiful in terms of production and orchestration is, for some reason, inferior to the first. It seems to lack warmth because many of the themes sway away from romantic love. It seems to be more about style than anything else. Though it is indeed stylish.
Anyway, wonderful to have both albums on this one CD. I wouldn't hesitate recommending it to anyone who likes late '60's British Pop, though to the modern ear, I should think this sound might sound very strange indeed, but, wonderfully so.

Not great variety.......2004-03-27

The information for this collection is not clear about composership. I thought I was getting a collection of adagios written by a *variety* of composers. Instead it is only:
- Albioni (1 CD)
- Bach (2 CDs)
- Beethoven (2 CDs)
Now, I really like these composers, but I thought this collection included more of a variety. So I'm disappointed in the CD set. The only place you can see for sure who the composers are is if you blow up the image of the cover you can see the composer list.

Great Collection!.......2001-02-09

I loved this wonderful collection of relaxing and romantic pieces. It includes a wonderful rendering of Albinoni's famous adagio, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Great for listening to while working or just daydreaming!

Very Disappointing.......2002-07-24

If you want to know just how great a conductor Otto Klemperer was, compare his St. Matthew Passion with Johannes Somary's version. Both are well recorded, extremely well performed and dauntingly (and I do mean dauntingly) slow, especially to those used to listening to the tempos set by the likes of Otto Max and J.E. Gardiner. However, where Klemperer beautifully sustains the intensity of the performance and keeps an iron grip on the piece's architecture, Somary very quickly looses his way. Very little drama is generated, despite the best efforts of the soloists, and overall the performance meanders along. The result is, unfortunately, a rather dull and uninvolving Passion. If period performance is not your cup of tea, your best bet is either Klemperer's Passion or Ritcher's first (1950s) version.
