Album Description

Born in 1974, British tenor Russell Watson became an opera singer by freak occurrence. While he was regularly singing in bars and clubs in the Manchester and London suburbs, an owner of one such venue told Watson that he thought his voice was better suited for opera and requested that he learn Puccini's 'Nessum Dorma', which he did and promptly added to his set. Watson eventually signed with Decca Records, issuing his debut, entitled The Voice, in April of 2001. Nicknamed 'the People's Tenor', Watson seems poised to convert more than a few opera naysayers as he covers such contemporary compositions as Freddie Mercury's 'Barcelona', in addition to the standards. Includes the 2 bonus tracks 'I Have Nothing' & 'Can't Help Falling In Love'. 2006.

5 out of 5 stars The only other Timi fan in the UK?.......2006-11-06

I found the review of your UK reviewer absolutely spot on. Tmi Yuro was the most underrated singer of her age, in any genre.

I wore out two copies of the original Mercury vinyl LP and was delighted when the remastered lengthened version came out.

Some say this was her weakest album and sales were not great but they never were with any of her albums and it is just beyond me why she was not a million seller with every album. Virtually no bad tracks, the most committed emotional singing, I liked the fuller orchestral sound of the Mercury album as a change, although 'Soul' is still my favourite of her albums, and indeed it was the very first album I ever bought.

And what a treat to get all the extra tracks on this compilation even though many of them do not really fit with the feel of the original album. We must not complain - it has taken long enough for her albums to appear on CD and although I agree with one reviewer that the vinyl sounds better (I still believe vinyl is more 'musical' than CD) at least I can easily transcribe to my mp3 player and listen at will.

A compulsory addition to one's collection

5 out of 5 stars There is only one !.......2005-12-02

Oh my lord there is only one and It is the GREAT TIMI YURO She is the greatest female singer that ever lived!I've heard people say she's the greatest white female soul singer, take out the word white and you'd be right. I first heard Timi when I was sixteen years old and knew then this woman could sing like no other Her voice would make an angel smile There are so many of her songs that are amazing It's hard to pick one out I have many of her albums and love every one of them she's the best, back and beyond. You can't go wrong buying her music If you're new to TIMI Start with her early recordings, If you live 100 years you'll never hear a woman with a more powerful voice Yes the little white girl could sing!!

4 out of 5 stars Very good, but buy the Original Timi Yuro first........2005-11-19

This is a very interesting collection, wildly different between the first half of the cd and the second half. From what the liner notes tell, the first 11 or 12 songs were arranged by Quincy Jones. These songs tend to be a bit somnambulent-heavily orchestrated adult contemporary ballads. My favorites among these are Johnny, My foolish heart, I'm still around. Track 13 is where the fun begins with a rowdy version of Roy Hamilton's rockabilly classic "You can have him." Track 15 is called Get out of my life, and it sounds very much like something Bert Bacharach would have written for Dionne Warwick - it's a great song and arrangement. Track 17 is Teardrops till dawn which is a slightly bombastic Phil Spector-ish production that sounds remarkably like the Shangri-La's Leader of the pack. I love it. Track #21 is the reason you should buy this cd - it is called Cuttin In. This is Timi Yuro giving a bitchy, growling R&B performance that equals Etta James at her best. This song is awesome. The final two songs are the Italian language E Poi Verra L'Autumno and Ti Credo. E Poi Verra is also an emotional, convincing and dramatic song, Ti Credo is more gentle and lovely.I once read that Dinah Washington said she could sing anything, and the reviewer said she wasn't bragging, she was telling the truth. Timi Yuro could also sing anything. This woman was a truly great talent. It's so amazing that she seems to be unknown and/or forgotten - I guess the slimy recording industry is too busy promoting their latest selection of untalented "bimbette" female singers that currently proliferate and adult contemporary screechers and shriekers like Michael Bolton. Now you ask, why didn't I give this collection 5 stars? Because it is not a perfect collection like "The Original", and I also prefer Timi's "Sings Willie Nelson". Some people hate the Willie Nelson cd because her voice is smokier and darker, but her world-weary voice was completely appropriate for the dark and sometimes depressing Willie Nelson songs. The Amazing Timi Yuro is worth buying for "I'm cuttin in" - that performance is so remarkable, and there are other worthwhile songs on this as well, but I would get the aforementioned cd's first.

5 out of 5 stars Timi Yuro at her Greatest.......2005-10-08

I went buying this CD just knowing the singles released by Timi Yuro, and a few album cuts from both ends of her Liberty records Career. Unlike what the liner notes say, I think the LP this CD was based around was a departure from her early work at Liberty. "The Amzing Timi Yuro" feels more like a jazz album, starkly removed from her Last Liberty outing "Make The World Go Away" She sings with more subtly here, which allows you to appreciate the great enunciation and passion that she bught to every note, and demonstrated she was a very versatile singer, that she did not need to belt out the song all the time to caress each note with convinction and believeabilty.

The following singles are really random, but are great nonetheless. I actually prefer her reworking of "You Can Have Him" to Dionne Warwick's (Both minor hit's during 1965) It sounds like a lost Ronettes track, with Timi starting off the song demurely, almost nonchalant and as the song progresses it seems the subject on her mind eats away at her, and the resulting anger and fury of being burned snowballs out by the end of the song. By Comparison Dionne Warwick's straight ahead rock-soul version sounds like a lost Live Vandellas Performance, not concentrationing on the lyric of the song.

Then there is the brilliant 3rd Single "Get Out of My Life" which is so sublime and the way Timi is able to stand out against one of Teddy Randazzo densest productions (well at least in Mono, you savor the lushness of his productions when they are in Stereo). Again Timi shows restraint when the sentiments are directed at another person, but when she concentrates on what she's feeling, all the emotions come pouring out..maybe too intense an emotional statement for 1965 Brit Beat and Supremes dominated top 40, like most of Teddy Randazzo's work.

I just hold a slight preference for The Royalettes Version of "Can't Stop Running Away" from their "Elegant Sounds" LP possibly because Ironically that's the version I heard first, or it is in Stereo, and in Contrast Sheila Ross is better able to convey the feeling of claustrophobia and running away from a break-up a little better.Timi Yuro doesn't seem like a woman that would run away, she would, like on the A-side, she'd confront it or dismiss it with the confidence she portrayed on record.

Possibly my favorite CD purchase this year....

5 out of 5 stars WHY ARE SOME TRACKS NOT INCLUDED.......2005-10-06

Timi only recorded one album with Mercury, which is here and also includes most of the Mercury singles. Unfortunately there are some tracks not included, and I don't understand why.
This album is the most "adult" set of recordings she ever made, and they will never date. Her voice is sheer perfection, and Tim wrings every ounce of emotion she has on each one. My own personal favourite is "All I Need Is You", but they are all gems.
She was a terrific singer, and to me outshone Striesand and Franklin and all the other female singers. I think she suffered from very bad promotion and management, as she should have been a huge star.
I have every record she made, some are signed by her, which I treasure. I also now have almost everything she did on cd, which saves me from playing my treasured vinyl which I will never part with.
I also have fan club material which I have kept from the sixties, plus a couple of letters she wrote to me. The last one was very sad, as she was telling me that she had just recorded what she called "the last thing I can ever offer to you", which was her superb album with Willie Nelson. She knew she would never record again due to her wicked cancer, which eventually took her from us. She is so very sadly missed, not only as a lovely little lady, but also as possibly one of the greatest white soul singers who ever lived.
Why she never reached the top I just don't know as she certainly deserved to be there.... Mike Rossiter

Another monument in the history of recording, this is the only set of Haydn symphonies that ever reached completion, and the performances are generally so good as to bear comparison with many of the best individual performances. The music itself is astounding--107 symphonies, all of them good, many of them shattering masterpieces. Haydn invented the Classical style, which, along with the contributions from his friend Mozart and his student Beethoven, became the standard by which all future music was measured. At a budget price, owning this set is like being able to have your own authentic copy of the "Mona Lisa" for a couple hundred dollars. Awesome! --David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A superb milestone.......2007-05-01

Antal Dorati's pioneering, complete cycle of Haydn's symphonies is a milestone in recording history. Here it is incarnated on 33 CDs. What you get are outstanding, superb performances. The orchestra - Hungarica Philharmonia - is just wonderful, and the interpretations are remarkable in their attention to detail and structure. In addition, the Decca analogue sound has never been better than here. The booklet is also excellent.

Dorati's pioneering efforts included also the Haydn operas, which recently have been collected and released in two boxes from Philips, and the 24 Minuets (Decca).

What about the competition, then? Adam Fischer's Haydn project on Nimbus offers also a complete cycle, now on Brilliant Classics at a bargain price for a very big box with 33 CDs and a brief booklet. Well, for one thing, Dorati's set is the classic cycle. Further, Dorati's readings are less extravagant than Fischer's - and in my view preferable. The sound is also better in the earlier Dorati set: a warm analogue sound in contrast to Fischer's chilly, all-digital sound, which also is very uneven. But Fischer's Haydn is less expensive: you can get his cycle for less than $100 from second-hand dealers. Despite that, Dorati's cycle should be your first choice. Moreover, if shelf space is an issue, the Dorati box is one inch slimmer and a half inch less tall.

Furthermore, there are selections of symphonies from Jochum (DG) and Scherchen (DG), of which I hold the latter in higher esteem due to its idiosyncrasy. In retrospect, however, Dorati's complete cycle has a unique classic status and is as such unchallenged. Thus I warmly recommend it as a part of the foundation of your collection in addition to Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Mahler, and Mozart symphony cycles, because this is delightful music that will last for a lifetime on a desert island.

5 out of 5 stars For the sheer pleasure of them all...........2006-11-11

In the mid seventies, my father purchased all of what had been released of this cycle on vinyl LP. As vinyl goes, the London discs were first rate, and a prized possession.

I lost the vinyl collection during a move in the mid 80's. It was an emotional impact; I had cherished them as a child, and as a gift, irreplaceable.

This release is true to my memory, and now I have the entire cycle.

I've performed many of these in various orchestras and loved them all.

There's a fresh energy to the performances, and an elegance to the collection quite rare and delightful.

As a set, it's actually quite affordable considering it's under $6 per disc, or under $2 per symphony.

5 out of 5 stars Antal Dorati's Claim To Fame.......2005-10-14

If it wasn't for this massive recording project, Hungarian-born conductor Antal Dorati would not have been acknowledged as a first-classconductor at a time when such giants as Leopold Stokowski, Herbert Von Karajan, George Solti and Leonard Bernstein were still conducting. Dorati is an exemplary exponent of classical music, which is also to say Classical Era music (1750-1800). Nevertheless, even if Dorati has a superb touch for this kind of repertoire, he is equally as brilliant in 20th century music and Romantic Era music, as his Tchaikovsky symphonies and ballets have proven. At an expensive price, this recording is still worth it. It's a legend in recorded history of classical music. No other conductor dared to take on such a monumental project as to record all 100 and plus symphonies of Franz Joseph Haydn, the composer who by definition began the movement of Classical Era music. It was Mozart, who was his younger friend, that is better known today for this kind of music and moreover, musicologists believe he refined and perfected the style. But don't underestimate Papa Haydn. His music is beautiful, bursting with energy and lightness, elegance, warmth and melodic harmony that is so refreshing to hear especially in our own time which is full of stress.

Haydn's symphonies are not all similar sounding. Each symphony was unique, like the hand prints on people. Yes, at times they do tend to sound the same, possibly because so many of them were in the key of D. Nevertheless, they are music of individual merit. As his symphonies approached its later years and maturation, Haydn employed slights of ear and orchestral innovations that were considered new and bold in his time. The "surprise" in his "Surprise Symphony" is a thunderous "bang" in fortissimo by the orchestra after a melody that is rather bland and sleepy (which to me sounds like "Mary Had A Little Lamb"). The "Clock" Symphony is measured in a kind of "tick-tock" beat and is very very elegant and memorable, as it conjures up the image of a Rococco clock or a clock museum. The Paris Symphonies are an Austrian-German man's "trip" to Paris and his interpretation of French music. It sounds nothing at all like French music at the time although at times it nearly slips into the slow grandeur of the music of Baroque master Jean Baptiste Lully. The London Symphonies are among his best, with a kind of majesty and pomp typically associated with English royalty. If you listen carefully it's in the music. A similar thing occurs in the music to the "Oxford" Symphony. Haydn had visited Oxford to teach music and was awarded a doctorate. He composed music for that special event and the music is brooding, intellectual and somehow very very English.

Antal Dorati and his formidable Hungarica Philharmonica is at their very best in this set. The sound is crisp, gleaming and unbeatable. Even if you get the individualized sets of these symphonies, you will be treating yourself to some top-notch classical music. A must have for fans of Antal Dorati.

5 out of 5 stars A major milestone in recorded music, stunning achievement.......2005-03-29

This complete cycle of the Symphonies of F.J. Haydn heralded a new era in recorded music. Everything about the project was first rate. The sound was among Decca's best. The playing of the little known Philharmonia Hungarica was close to perfect. Dorati's interpretations never disappointed. To top it off, Decca offered the cycle at budget prices and threw in unprecedented notes from H.C. Robbins Landon.

Many would comment "once you've heard one, you've heard them all" when asked about Haydn's vast symphonic output. They could not be more wrong. There isn't a dull symphony or poor performance in the lot. Try such unknowns as #26, or #33, or #51 and #52, to name a few of my lesser known favorites.

Those familiar with Haydn's more well known symphonies, such as the London Symphonies (93-104) were even astonished to find Dorati's performances giving more formidable orchestras and conductors a run for their money.

So what can be said of the set 30 years later?

Everything said earlier still stands, including the original liner notes. Only Graham Johnson's scrupulous notes with his various Hyperion lieder sets surpass Landon's astounding commentary. The digital transfers are from the late 80s, so they are not the best, but still quite serviceable. And the price is still quite reasonable.

Beware, though, that these are not period instruments. Dorati does use "period forces" as much as possible, meaning the number of instruments closely matches what would have been used originally.

So why do I say this set "heralded a new era in recorded music"? Because after the resounding success it enjoyed, many "complete" works projects of similar or greater magnitude got their chance. I doubt we would have any where near the volumes of "complete sets" we now enjoy had it not been for Dorati and Decca's Haydn cycle.

In short, a fabulous set that I would never part with.

5 out of 5 stars Dorati blazed the trail for Haydn interpreters.......2004-11-12

I've owned this complete set of Haydn symphonies for at least a decade or more. While I enjoy period instrument sound and performance practice, you cannot get a complete set on period instruments (I was hoping Hogwood would finish his cycle but I understand it wasn't to be). In all honesty, I think the best period instrument interpretations outdo the modern instrument recordings in sheer energy amd agility, but in respect of modern instruments, Dorati, the pioneer, does an extraordinary job of bringing out the essential flavor and energy that was Haydn's symphonies. I don't like mixing and matching various orchestras and conductors, so buying this 32 CD set gets you all 104+ symphonies in one tidy package. The sound quality is very good considering the times, with a very forward midrange.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A very-good compilation from a GREAT band.......2006-10-18

Mercury Rev.... a band that is both long-overdue for such a compilation, and simultaneously a band who defy any such attempts to parse-down their amazing catalogue to a simple 14-track overview. Their music is intimate and personal. Attempts to summarize this sort of output... it seems puzzling inadequate, in a funny way.

Just weeks ago, I had wondered if career-overview/best-of/collection would ever appear for the Rev, and then out of the blue I stumble across this 2-disc set at an airport Virgin store. While already possessing all but the three previously-unreleased tracks on this set, I still had to shell-out the money. I've been faithful to this ever-changing outfit since first hearing "Chasing a Bee" in 1991, and consider their sizable, complete catalogue of albums, imports and singles one of the most-used sections of my cd-library.

My first thought on scanning the tracklisting is that they seem to have eschewed the typical "put-all-the-singles-on" format, and have instead placed what I presume to be some band-favourites on here instead. While that works for some tracks (ie. "Empire State"), it also means some less-than-stellar tracks are taking-up room that - in my ever-so-humble opinion - could be better used.

CD1: THE GOOD -- well, most of the disc is brilliant, of course. The tracks are not in any sort of chronological order, which works fine IMO, although there do seem to be a few lulls between certain tracks. It's great to see "Empire State" given star treatment, it's one hell of a great track. Also nice to see "Black Forest" - one of the better moments from "SECRET MIGRATION" - given a bit of respect. "Frittering" is also a very nice surprise, and it works great in amongst the other gems.

CD1: THE BAD -- while strictly my opinion, of course, I feel that the inclusion of both "Diamonds" and the cute-but-unessential "A Drop In Time" both suck-up valuable space from other neglected tracks. Several singles ("Bronx Cheer", "Young Man's Stride", "Little Rhymes", "Across Yer Ocean") are ignored altogether in place of these two tracks. And if the band was choosing simply great material over singles, I cannot fathom the exclusion of "Endlessly", "The Funny Bird" or "Lincoln's Eyes", among many (many!) other gems.
Ah, but that's all part of being a hardcore fan, isn't it?! :)

CD2: THE GOOD -- well the best part is, of course, the unreleased tracks! All three are great -- "Clamour" is a wonderful peek back in time to a rougher, more carefree 'Rev, and it's just plain great to hear. Aside from the three new tracks, many of the others are gems. A few of the more obscure inclusions (ie. the compilation-only covers of James Brown's "It's A Man's Man's Man's World" and Bowie's "Memory of a Free Festival") are very welcome indeed. Nice to have them assembled in one place.

CD2: THE BAD -- A case of missed opportunities, I guess. I very much wish they had included the Japan-only track "Cartwheel", as it remains one of their best non-LP songs (well it was on an LP, but only on Japanese versions of "SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE"). I'm sure many hardcore fans would have appreciated having it on here. As well, some old Peel Sessions would have been a great treat. Many of the b-sides on here are quite recent (from the "ALL IS DREAM" and "SECRET MIGRATION" singles, many still available), and as such this 2nd-CD feels like a lost opportunity to treat the long-faithful fans to a banquet of truly rare and obscure items.

Overall it's still a great compilation, one that will get some regular play-time in my house.
They remain one of my long-standing, all-time favourite bands, and I hold their music very closely to my heart. I can only hope that many new ears will be opened with this compilation, many new fans will be created, and M.R. continue to create wonderful swirling headspace music for many, many years to come.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars japanese version not so entirely different.......2006-12-12

I have to disagree with the earlier reviewer because his point of view is incorrect. Any of the "Killers" albums, whether on vinyl or on CD, US/ European or Japanese, share the same 4 new songs. According to the CD-inlay of "The Elder" album they were recorded before that album but not appropiate enough to gain a place on that one so in that way they are outtakes in a sense, leftovers some might say, how good they sound. Only 2 of them made it on the 5-CD Kiss boxset. The Japanese version of "Killers" has compared to the US and European versions 2 more songs ("Shandi" from "Unmasked" album and "Escape from the Island" from "The Elder" album) but they are 'normal' and don't add anything extra, if you owe those albums already, like every Kiss fan will do. Those aforementioned songs are indeed great bonusses for which this album alone is worth its price, albeit sometimes a high one. For the rest this is simple a compilation, from which Kiss has (too) many on offer. Therefore 3 stars, for the four new songs only. {Ace is sorely missed).

5 out of 5 stars Rare japa import.......2006-02-20

At this time it wasnt good to be in KISS,their last albums destroying their reputation `unmasked`and `the elder` werent apreciated by the fans far from there, after they hired Eric Carr in the beggening of the decade they made one of their heaviest albums yet `creatures of the night` just after they released killers.

They made killers between `the elder`and `creatures of the night`i guess to get a little money. At the time of this release Ace was still in the band but he didnt play on any of the 4 new tracks and left soon after this compilation was made`Killers`was released just 4 years after their first compilation `double platinum.

There has been several editions of this compilation ,the American,Japanese(wich i am curently rewiewing)and others`.This compilation is rare i was lucky to get it especially this japanese version of it so its a treasure for a KISS fan i had all these songs already but not the 4 new tracks its rarity makes it a very valuable addition to your KISS collection.

The 4 new tracks are great but Ace didnt play on them anyway they are `im a legend tonight``nowhere to run``partners in crime`and `down on your knees`.The best ones are`down on your knees`and `partners in crime`.

The new tracks are very controversial because they werent made for creatures but either the elder. They say it was made in a quick sesion especially for this compilation but i think that they should explain it because it is hard to know for sure.

The japanese version feature these songs;
1.Im a legend tonight
2.Down on your knees
3.Cold gin
4.Love gun
5.Shout it out loud
6.Escape from the island
7.Sure know something
8.Nowhere to run
9.Partners in crime
10.Detroit rock city
11.God of thunder
12.I was made for loving you
13.Shandi
14.Rock`n`roll all nite live

So there are different songs from the other versions and i think more songs too. This a great piece to your kiss collection rare and expansive too i payed 40 bucks to get it.Its expansive its not the best compilation but its rarity makes up for it!

3 out of 5 stars Not the best of anyone involved.......2006-09-18

If you miss 80's hair metal you might LOVE this, but if you're like me and tend to laugh out loud at the band photos, let alone the music, don't waste your money. Steve Stevens is an amazing guitar player, but looks like Boy George's long lost brother in a bad wig. The Japanese pressing comes with extra laughing matter in the way of a "pose booklet". I don't know how else to describe it. Musically the CD represents a bit of an artistic nadir for all involved. Pretty unremarkable considering the talent assembled. The similarly hard to find Demolition 23 CD wipes the floor with this, it's way grittier with much better songs, riffs and ideas in general. 3 stars is overstating it a bit, 2 1/2 would be the most accurate. It's not a BAD CD, just a disappointing one.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A frequently overlooked period in his career.......2003-10-04

Johnny Cash recorded five albums for Mercury between 1987 and 1991 including one album of re-recorded oldies (Classic Cash) and four standard albums, these being Johnny Cash is coming to town, Water from the wells of home (an album featuring many guests), Boom chicka boom and Mystery of life. Those albums were of a high quality and could be described as typical of his normal musical style, but they did not capture the public imagination.

Johnny Cash is coming to town and Boom chicka boom have been re-issued as a twofer in America. I loved both of them first time round. Among the tracks from those two albums included here are Sixteen tons (the Tennessee Ernie Ford classic), Cats in the cradle (the Harry Chapin classic), W Lee O'Daniel and A backstage pass to a Willie Nelson show.

Water from the wells of home (also re-issued in America, but on its own) is represented by That old wheel (with Hank Williams Junior), Sweeter than the flowers (with Waylon Jennings), As long as I live (with Emmylou Harris) and Call me the breeze (with his son).

The final album, The Mystery of life, has also been re-issued in America on its own and is represented by four tracks including Beans for breakfast and a cover of the Bob Dylan song, Wanted man.

The Classic Cash album (not re-issued) is represented by just two tracks, possibly reflecting public disapproval of re-recorded hits, yet the 1988 version of Don't take your guns to town, which closes this set, makes a nice change from the original and works well.

Johnny's spell on Mercury was not his most successful but here is a selection of tracks from those five albums to remind us that Johnny recorded some great music back then.
