Good music, engineering could be better.......2005-05-05
I almost always prefer the live perfomances when the energy of the audience carries over to the performers. This is one case when I wish I had gotten the studio version.
a classical-Latin music blend.......2005-04-22
The opening track is a version of "Libertango", heard in the fabulous soundtrack of the film "The Tango Lesson", and one of the three compositions by Astor Piazzolla, in this concert that was recorded live at Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall in 2003. The group of assorted and marvelous musicians toured the world with this music, and there is a cohesion between the performers and the material they are playing that is evident, and a pleasure to hear. One hears the applause, but it is not obtrusive, and the sound is excellent for a live recording.
Very impressive is the clarinet of 6 time Grammy Award winner and composer Paquito D'Rivera, who wrote 3 of the tracks, and shows his virtuosity and Cuban soul in 7 pieces, and I especially like his "Merengue".
Rosa Passos sings and plays guitar on 4 tracks, and has a soft, clear, and pleasing voice, and 3 of the songs she interprets so well are by her fellow countryman and Brazilian bossa nova artist Antonio Carlos Jobim.
Other musicians are Sergio and Odair Assad on guitars, Kathryn Scott on piano, Nilson Matta on bass, and Cyro Baptista on percussion. Yo Yo Ma is of course the household name among them, and is masterful in his interpretations throughout; I especially like him in D'Rivera's "Afro", a fascinating piece with some experimental sounds.
Other favorites for me are D'Rivera's "Wapango", and "Cristal" (Camargo Mariano), a rhythmic duet between Ma and Scott that is terrific.
This CD has the feel of a classical chamber concert, with the warmth of melodious Latin compositions, and is a nice and unique musical treat.
The foldout insert has liner notes by D'Rivera, recording info, and mini bios of Ma's 7 fellow musicians; total playing time is 72'07.
This package contains a bonus DVD, that includes 3 videos:
1. Piazzolla's "Libertango", from the original soundtrack of Sally Potter's film "The Tango Lesson", with clips of the great tango dancer Pablo Veron.
2. "Brasileirinho", by Waldir Azevedo, featuring Paquito D'Rivera, from the "Obrigado Brazil" CD.
3. Jobim's "Chega de Saudage" interpreted by Rosa Passos, from the "Obrigado Brazil" CD.
It also includes a very short interview with Yo Yo Ma.

A beautiful homage........2006-11-14
Maria Bethânia has carved out a distinctive place for herself amongst the pantheon of Brazilian greats of the last half century.
Her love for the dramatic, the theatrical and the unashamedly romantic has earned her a place in the hearts of a devoted fan-base and today, 40 years after her debut show in Rio set her on the path to stardom, she is still one of the biggest names in Brazilian music.
It is also 40 years since she first met the legendary poet, lyricist and co-founder of the bossa nova movement Vinícius de Moraes, an early supporter with whom she went on to forge an enduring friendship.
To celebrate this double anniversary, Bethânia has produced "Que Falta Você Me Faz" ( this is the original title of the album), a homage to Vinícius that draws on material from across his luminous career, including his near-mythical collaborations with Tom Jobim and Baden Powell.
Typically, Bethânia has sought out material with a dramatic edge. Her selections range from the smooth, confident samba of `Lamento no Morro' to the introspective `O Astronauta'. Her smoky, controlled delivery is complemented perfectly by an expansive musical setting based around sensitive arrangements of piano, guitar and percussion. Unfortunately, the glossy, overwrought strings that Bethânia too often relies upon to provide the emotional punch are also present on many of the tracks, needlessly distracting from the otherwise subtle performances.
"Que Falta..." is at its best on songs such as "Modinha" and the closing "Nature Boy" (with brother Caetano Veloso) when the backing is kept simple, allowing the quality of the songwriting and Bethânia's remarkable voice to shine.
At moments of undeniable beauty such as these, the set borders on perfection.

Remarkable lyricist from Brazil in a good songbook sung by vocal masters from Brazil.......2007-01-20
This is an interesting compilation because it covers two different aspects.
First it is a songbook of Vinicius De Moraes, the lyricist of Bossa Nova containing his collaboration with great Bossa Nova composers at the time (late 50s and all 60s): Antonio Carlos Jobim, Baden Powell, and Carlos Lyra. Toquinho was a post-Bossa Nova composer and guitarrist to whom De Moraes became associated in his last decades.
Second it is a panel of great Brazilian crooners and songbirds what includes Elis Regina, Sylvia Telles, Os Cariocas, Agostinho dos Santos and the vocal group Os Cariocas.
Though I don't think some performers were not the best choice and even considering there is quite a lot more on De Moraes which was not included, this is a reasonable CD for those who wish to dig a little bit more on this lyricist.
In other words, though this compilation was a good idea, I think label Universal did not choose the best from its archives on De Moraes.

Antonio Carlos Jobim is remembered as one Brazil's greatest composers. He spearheaded the creation of bossa nova nearly a half century ago; he was also a musician whose talents extended far beyond that of a composer. His training was in classical music and he'd been involved with large-scale orchestral collaborations for his work over the years. This posthumous effort, recorded live in 2002, highlights many of those large-scale works, offering lush arrangements by the maestro himself, Claus Ogerman, and Nelson Riddle, as well as new charts by son Paulo Jobim and Mario Adnet. In addition to classical arrangements of such classics as "A Felicidade" and "Garota de Ipanema" ("The Girl from Impanema"), previously unreleased pieces "Preludio" and "Lenda" make their debut on this double-disc collection. This large canvas of sound deftly illustrates the beauty of Jobim's melodies, but the composer's majestic sense of harmony is really highlighted, thus offering up the biggest revelation of the project. This is the best re-imagination of the composer's work since Morelenbaum/Sakamoto's Casa. --Tad HendricksonCustomer Reviews:
In Concert With The Sun, Moon, Stars And A Heavenly Choir, Everytime Someone Enjoys Symphonic Jobim, An Angel Gets His Wings!.......2007-06-21
How does an Artist manage to be influenced and still a make a work of art their own?
Love and desire.
Symphonic Jobim strikes me as being very Nationalistic, a sort of Spiritual road map to the heart of the World, and what better way to celebrate one's roots by drawing on the panorama of Rio and Brazil, or, Brasil.
Frank Loyd Wright once said, Architecture is frozen Music. Jobim went on record, Music is frozen Architecture!
Thanks, Tom!
Historians say the height of Civilisation is the drawing in and taking out of water, music is like water, it comes in waves, when I listen to Symphonic Jobim all the public works are in place and working smoothly.
I was raised on Debussy and Ravel, but they're a little before my time, Symphonic Jobim puts life's panorama in perspective for me.
I don't have to be near a pretty picture window to drink in the scenery when I listen to Symphonic Jobim, the beautiful motifs conjure all kinds of pictures and feelings.
Every recording becomes a by product of the time period it was made, but Symphonic Jobim has a certain timelessness attached to it... it is a perfect piece of music beginning to end!
Symphonic Jobim, a Project by Paulo Jobim and Mario Adnet, does much credit to it's Composer. Good Job!

A somehow underrated artist outside of his native Brazil, Vinicius de Moraes was the ultimate lyricist of the bossa nova movement. Tender and delicate, his philosophical contemplations saw life as a melancholy, fleeting journey brightened by women, nature, and wine. De Moraes needed only a few words to verbalize the meaning of saudade (Brazil's term for nostalgia). Perhaps his powers are most eloquently illustrated in the lyrics he wrote for "The Girl from Ipanema," in which the sight of a pretty girl walking down the beach turns into a meditation on the inherent sadness of human existence. Live in Buenos Aires was actually recorded in the studio in front of a small audience as a re-creation of the shows that de Moraes had presented in Argentina's La Fusa coffeehouse together with guitarist Toquinho and vocalist Maria Creuza. Released in 1970, the original LP was titled Vinicius de Moraes en La Fusa and treasured by record collectors everywhere; the trio's harmonizing on the wistful "Tomara" and the joyful "Que Maravilha" makes it easy to understand why. Luminous versions of bossa staples such as "Ipanema" and "A Felicidade" are also included. Vinicius died in 1980, leaving Brazil in shock at the thought that such a life-affirming artist had actually departed the world. --Ernesto LechnerCustomer Reviews:
