Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Soaring.......2005-08-23

Another soaring score from John Barry, whose fantastic music sounds better every time.
This soundtrack is a definite change in his style, and was followed up by Somewhere in Time and Out Of Africa. The three together are the best romantic scores to come out of the 1980's.

5 out of 5 stars Flying over China.......2003-09-09

Does anyone remember "flying over Africa" from Out of Africa?
The flying scenes don't compare, but some may find High Road to Chinas' music soars even beyond. I do? John Barry's early music is his best. His more recent scores use the same style orcestrations showing that he has found a style that he loves and is sticking to it. His music doesn't surprise me any more, I always know when it's him. His older material is his most original and diverse. This one is just beautiful and would easily make any score fans' top 10.

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly beautiful........2003-07-15

The music from High Road to China, as presented on this CD, is simply outstanding, and is hauntingly beautiful. The music is evocative of scenes and situations in the movie, and I highly recommend buying the movie with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong, which I believe is available only in VHS format. I wish it were available on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful piece of work........2001-08-04

The soundtrack is truly magnificent. John Barry captured the beauty of the film and the chemistry between the characters with a piece of music so emotionally stirring it touches the very soul. Mr. Barry, I salute you.

5 out of 5 stars John Barry Touches The Spirit.......2001-03-12

'High Road To China' is yet another lovely and poignant John Barry score to rejoice to or weep to. The music is marvelous, and the sound quality of this CD is excellent. John Barry shows us again in this soundtrack his extraordinary ability to score action and events not for what they appear to be on the screen, but from inside what the characters are feeling, wondering and deciding.

'Somewhere In Time', 'Out of Africa', 'Dances With Wolves' and 'High Road To China' all have that distinctive Barry flavor -- tender, moving, searching, reaching, evoking every deep emotion we've ever chosen to feel, his phrases, changes, harmonies and arrangements touching the essence of the questions we ask about life. And often rearranging our perspective in a way that helps us find better answers...

I admire Barry's courage in saying the same thing over and over -- that life can be successfully lived only through the heart, for living through the heart is the only way we ever learn who we are and why we are here. But he says it a little differently each time, touching new places in one's spirit. Sound intriguing? Buy all four soundtracks and you might find you play them often because his music gently opens your heart.

'High Road To China' is music that lives beautifully on its own. If you are willing to spend some time of your life feeling your feelings and letting the embracing and often haunting music take you where you will, John Barry is your friend.

3 out of 5 stars Bon Jovi pre-history.......2007-05-07

Before becoming a platinum-selling megastar, Jon Bon Jovi was just plain old John Bongiovi, a janitor at his uncle's recording studio The Power Station. While working at the studio (and before forming the band Bon Jovi), he recorded several songs that have been collected on this album.

There are at least half a dozen different versions of this material, released by as many different (but always small) record labels. I have to assume that the songs were never intended for release, otherwise Jon Bon Jovi himself would have issued the album, and you know that would have been a decent seller for a major label. The various releases contain anywhere from 10 to 20 songs. If you're going to track this album down, you might as well try for the one with the most songs.

As to the actual music collected here, it's not bad at all, though it falls well short of what we heard on the debut Bon Jovi album. These songs take a more straightforward pop approach than the (relatively) hard rocking Bon Jovi material. It's almost like Bon Jovi was doing his best Springsteen impression, which oddly enough is pretty close to Bon Jovi's current sound. It makes you wonder just how much of Bon Jovi's early (and massively successful) hard rock sound came from people like Richie Sambora, Aldo Nova, and Desmond Child.

The Power Station Years (or the Best of John Bongiovi, or whatever it may be called) is an interesting bit of Bon Jovi history, and one that all serious Bon Jovi fans should check out. You probably won't find yourself reaching for this disc very often, but it's always interesting to see an artist's humble beginnings, and even more so for a star of Jon Bon Jovi's status.

5 out of 5 stars It Was Well Worth The Wait..........2001-08-15

I found this cd on amazon and decided to order it...It took longer than I'd thought it would but the day it arrived I stuck it right in the stereo and man, this cd rocks!...One listen to this and you'll see why this Jersey Boy was 'destined to make it'

My advice? Go out and get this cd...you WON'T be disappointed:)

5 out of 5 stars young jon arrives.......2001-07-16

i have listened to this cd on several occasions since it's arrival and found it remarkable. you can tell the pure, clear quality of jon's voice that will leave his fans emotionally wrung out when it has fully matured. i have played all the cd's one after the other as they came out and have found myself comparing his voice throughout. this cd is a must for bon jovi fans if only for the fun and comparison of voice. i hope others will agree that this cd is worth enjoying.

5 out of 5 stars young jon arrives.......2001-07-13

i have just finished listening to one of the most fascinating cd's in a long time. this is a good cd to hear the first beginnings of jon bon jovi. you can just tell that he has a voice that will touch your heart and wring all of your emotions to exhaustion. you can hear the clear and pure quality that will later be fully developed to make him one of the best singers of all time. i would recommend this cd purely for the fact of comparing the changes of vocal quality and style. this cd has been a pleasant experience and i hope others feel the same.

5 out of 5 stars Essential.......2001-06-29

Sure, Pulp did not start out as strong as they could have, but for any true fan it is essential. Besides, it's cheaper than buying all 4 albums and the packaging is lovely.

3 out of 5 stars Whee!.......1999-09-07

Instant early Pulp collection! Fun! I already own all these albums individually, but if you don't, you might as well have 'em all at once. To sum up: It is nice, in a naive sort of way; Freaks has many bland songs but also real flashes of brilliance, Being Followed Home in particular; Masters of the Universe is mediocre at best, and Separations is brilliant. I kinda wish they would've included some of the really obscure tracks that are virtually impossible to find otherwise here, but it's all good. There's plenty of great music in this set.

Album Description

Associates were once described as 'The most modern band of the '80s' & with good reason. Their astonishing music had no basis in the roots of rock 'n' roll. They drew on pre-rock traditions & non-rock genres to create a startlingly different kind of noise, one that people will still be trying to make sense of in years to come. This album features 16 tracks taken from four sessions recorded for the Beeb between 1981 & 1983 & includes stunning versions of 'Waiting For The Loveboat' & 'Breakfast' as well as unique cover versions of 'Love Hangover' & 'God Bless The Child'. Strange Fruit. 2003.

5 out of 5 stars Essential.......2005-10-15

This release spans the entire career and gives fans the opportunity to hear Billy paired not only with Alan Rankine and Michael Dempsey, but each of his subsequent accompanists.
The Rankine era material is fantastic and always makes me wish I had had the opportunity to see the band perform.
This is my all time favorite band, solely for their ingenuity, beautiful noise, and willingness to go way over-the top in singing and playing on occasion.
"Severe Bout..." is just numbing in its inventiveness, especially when you realize they never released it on an album proper! Altho the early material stands out best, you have to hear Billy's solo version of "God Bless the Child" to understand why Bono, Morrissey, Bowie, etc. were jealous of his vocal acrobatics. And the LP ends sweetly with a version of "Take Me to the Girl" with Billy whistling and a nice intro to Janice Long (the DJ).
This is absolutely essential for any fan. Right up there with "The Affectionate Punch," "Sulk," "The Peel Sessions" (you MUST find this!). Other releases were always patchy, but these 4 form the full portrait of the genius at work.
As Billy himself said to a reporter when asked where he'd been for a while "...I've been bathing in groovy chords..."

5 out of 5 stars a cultural artifact of a bygone era in avant garde rock.......2003-04-28

To get the full power of this recording you really have to invent a time machine and go back to the early eighties and see Sonic Youth perform live. An example of the early, raw power of this band. Back when they first started they were constantly redefining their sound with new kinds of chord progressions, feedback, distortion and just plain weirdness before settling into the corporate mainstream with more accessible recordings of their music. Still a great band though, especially live. The best early work by this band also includes Bad Moon Rising and Evol.

5 out of 5 stars Controversial confrontational cacaphonics.......2000-08-15

My copy only has one track not two, so it's even heaveier going!

This album is excellent... almost the equivalent of the SYR series only 15 years earlier. Snippets of actual songs from early Sonic LPs show up but they're not the point of this, the instrumentals are.

It just shows how much fun being in Sonic Youth is, despite their reputation for po-faced pretensiousness... they put The World Looks Red on in double-speed and it still sounds kewl!

I think they were just having fun, and what everyone forgets is originally this was a fan club only release on Thurston's Exstatic Peace! label -- it was never meant to be a best-seller.

Bear that in mind, listen to it on headphones and have fun -- it's like a musically rollercoaster -- scary and exhilerating!

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2000-03-11

This isn't for fans of Goo or Dirty. It's Sonic Youth's noisiest and most abrasive album. If you like Confusion is Sex, you'll love this. It's got awesome versions of The Good and the Bad, Confusion is Next, The Burning Spear, Kill Yr Idols, Early American, and some really cool instrumental stuff. All the songs are noisier than the studio versions, even the songs from Sonic Youth's weird early 1981 period. My only complaint is that Lee doesn't play the power drill on Burning Spear!

4 out of 5 stars confusion is abundant in these reviews.......2000-02-04

Yes, it's got no commercial potential, yes it's arty, yes it's not always catchy, but it is worthwhile for the SY fan. My version is just 1 track which makes it that you have play it all @ once, but it was originally a tape just so you could paly a couple of minutes @ a time like Vocabularinist's tapes are now. You have to remember that SY were not a pop group back then so this & GOO are diametrically opposed while both good. If you pay attention, there are great live versions of Confusion is Next, Burning Spear, & spaced out instrumental pieces + it will probably shut up that Pantera fan who thinks SY aren't hardcore enough.

1 out of 5 stars worst excuse for art I've ever encountered........1999-11-10

I own two albums by this artist (not three, this one's in a landfill somewhere). I respect Sonic Youth, don't get me wrong, but I've got to tell you... My three-year old sister could get together with her sandbox playmates and produce a more powerful musical statement than this album generates. This is very weak material in every sense of the word. Weak and very, very, very bad-sounding. Even SY diehards, my advice to you is to look elsewhere.
