Amalia Rodrigues is the unchallenged queen of fado--the Portuguese equivalent of flamenco or blues--and one of the greatest singers on record. Her voice is rich and sinuous, with the soulful intensity of a Billie Holiday or Edith Piaf, but a warmth and sense of phrasing all her own. This retrospective ranges from her first recordings in 1952 up to 1970 and gives a superb picture of her work. The instrumentation is simple guitar and Portuguese mandolin, perfectly framing her aching laments and flowing melodies, like a gentler version of flamenco or a continental cousin of Cesaria Evora's morna. The songs include folk and popular material, but the emphasis is on the deep, passionate fado, and it doesn't get any better than this. --Elijah Wald

5 out of 5 stars A lovely overview of the preeminent fadista.......2007-05-07

While I'm no expert on Portuguese fado music, for the last few years I have been buying and listening to CDs from some of the most notable international performers. Many of them, especially Misia, draw inspiration from the late Amália Rodrigues--the most famous and adored singer of fado in the twentieth century. This collection spans several decades of her work, and all the tracks are strong. Priced modestly, the "Art of Amália" is an excellent choice to survey the tremendous skill and passion of this very important singer in the genre. It would make an excellent addition to any fado collection, and it could also make for a nice introduction to fado for fans of world music generally.

5 out of 5 stars amalia.......2006-03-15

What can I say about this magnificent fadista that hasn't already been said. As far as I'm concerned no one can ever even come close to this fantastic artist. She puts so much feelings into every song that I can not help but to get teary eyed.

5 out of 5 stars The voice of the "Iberian Blues".......2005-08-03

Fado is a traditional portuguese music that has many meanings that cannot be found in a dictionary. It deals with fate and "saudade", a feeling best described as a melancholic reminescence of times past, but can also deal with day to day life, its joys and sadnesses. It often is described as the Portuguese answer to Blues, although musically they have very little in common. Amalia was the voice that brought international recognition to this musical style, and what makes her music so special and universally appealing is that her voice transcends the lyrics and stories she sings about. Even if you do not understand portuguese - the sounds of the guitar and "violao" in the background highlighted by her imense range and depth will haunt you into thoughtfulness. Her music is best enjoyed in solitude as it can inspire reflection and introspective. Now, don't let my intelectual musings scare you away - listen and discover it for yourself and find out if you have some "saudade" in you.

1 out of 5 stars Poor quality sound.......2005-03-09

The sound quality of this CD is so poor that I can't bear to listen to it. There is a lot of distortion. If I try to listen to the CD using headphones, then the channel separation becomes a problem; I hear one guitar and the singer's voice in one ear, and the other guitar (too loud) in the other ear. If I put the CD in my CD jukebox, then I cringe every time one of the songs on this disc is played, because it is recorded at a really high level, and that, combined with the distortion, hurts my ears.

5 out of 5 stars The Queen of Fado.......2005-01-28

To listent to Amália Rodrigues is to be hynotized by the sheer parodxical nature of life's eternal beaty and never-ending sadness. Never have I heard such a hauntingly beautiful voice. Her talent is unmatched. You may not understand her language, but the beauty is, you don't have to understand her words to understand her emotion.

5 out of 5 stars amalia.......2007-06-13

the best amalia cd.great sound and all the great traditional fado songs.

5 out of 5 stars This voice can do no wrong.......2005-03-05

Amalia still reigns as the Queen of Fado, and this collection provides further evidence of why that is. This compendium includes selections recorded over a number of years, and provides a range of material from pure Fado to folksong. All of it is sung in Amalia's inimitable style. Powerful, emotive, fantastic. It's difficult to describe her voice if you are not familiar with Amalia. I consider her one of the great voices of the 20th century - and this from someone who routinely listens to Tebaldi, Schwartzkopf, and the like.
As an improvement over the 'Art of Amalia 1', this CD credits the musicians performing with her on Portugues guitar, etc. A wonderful selection of Fado that I would highly recommend.

    Album Description

While the classical era is synonymous with Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert, Songs of the Classical Age illuminates a host of other composers of the Age of Enlightenment, along with less-familiar works by the aforementioned titans. Soprano Patrice Michaels, with keyboard artist David Schrader on fortepiano, performs an exceptionally wide-ranging program of 27 songs in four languages by 17 composers, including seven women and a Black composer from the French Caribbean. On this CD, a companion to her previous recital disc, Songs of the Romantic Age, Miss Michaels turns to what many consider her "core" repertoire: the music of Mozart and his contemporaries. The five Haydn canzonettas on the CD are among Haydn's few songs in English; the text of "She Never Told Her Love" is an excerpt from Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. Born five days before Mozart, Italy's Vincenzo Righini wrote opera, sacred, and instrumental music, and approximately 200 songs. The group of five songs presented here is solid proof of his stature as a composer for voice. Chevalier Joseph Boulogne de Saint-Georges, Nicola Dalayrac, and Giuseppe Marco Maria Felice Blangini all found success in the salons and theaters of Paris. The music of Anna Amalia von Sachsen-Weimar reflects the rhythmic and harmonic characteristics of the Baroque master. Johann Friedrich Reichart's highly dramatic setting of the ballad Johanna Sebus, chosen from verses by Goethe, emphasizes the relationship between a natural disaster and the emotional turmoil of the heroine. Corona Schröter was a central figure in the artistic life of Weimar. Her Für Männer uns zu plagen (To be Plagued by Men) also sets a text by Goethe. The blind Viennese composer Maria Theresia von Paradis, who studied with Salieri and Righini and befriended Mozart, explores the plight of the commoner in Morgenlied eines armen Mannes (Morning Song of a Poor Man.) Mozart's Cantata K. 619 (1791), a rarely heard late Masonic cantata, speaks with the same musical and poetic vocabulary as The Magic Flute, written at about the same time.
