Instead we get half-assed atempts at being cute which in turn are syrupy enough to keep New York in pancakes FOR-EV-ER! The sappy-ness goes way overboard when the KIDS, sing "Truly Scrumptious" to , you guessed it! Truly Scrumptious.

Peter Fletcher Plays Erik Satie
Manufacturer: Centaur ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD ASIN: B000AYYTS0 Release Date: 2005-09-27 |
Customer Reviews:
The Distilled Simplicity of Erik Satie Realized by Peter Fletcher.......2006-01-21
Peter Fletcher is not only a brilliant musician, but he is also a musicologist whose absorption in the music that he elects to perform demonstrates sensitivity to the composer's impulses that allows him to enter the difficult world of transcription. This generous recording of the music of Erik Satie includes works that are indeed standard repertoire (the 'Gymnopedies' and 'Gnossiennes' are often performed by pianists and by orchestras in the famous transcriptions by Debussy, as well as the rarely heard works such as 'Sports et Divertissements' that Fletcher performs impeccably along with the French poetry beautifully recited by an uncredited female reader ('Tiny Thoughts for Children'). And after an array of jewels Fletcher ends this recital with the lovely waltz 'Je te veux'. Ah, Paris!
The recorded sound is warm in presence with excellent engineering. But in the end it is Fletcher's suave tone and quiet surface (no fingers on strings sounds here!) that allows us to simply listen to the gentle genius of Satie's melodies. No higher praise could be paid a performer. Highly recommended,
Grady Harp, January 06
A broad range of gems from a very influential and intersting artist and personality - played beautifully on guitar.......2006-01-11
The notes provided are very helpful. The listener can get the background of all the pieces as well as the English translation of the narrated portions of the large work on the disk, "Sports et Divertissements" from 1914. You will get to hear the familiar Satie (The "Three Gymnopédies" from 1888, the sad Rag-Time from Parade (commemorating the sinking of the Titanic) from 1919, to several quite unfamiliar and delightful gems.
However, I believe that, more than for most other composers of significance, it is quite helpful to get some idea of the character and personality of Erik Satie in order to come to terms with his music.
Sorry for the long quote to follow, but it is insightful. In "Conversations with Igor Stravinsky" when asked what he recalled of Satie, the composer said, "He was certainly the oddest person I have ever known, but the most rare and consistently witty person, too. I had a great liking for him and he appreciated my friendliness, I think, and liked me in return. With his pince-nez, umbrella, and galoshes he looked a perfect schoolmaster, but he looked just as much like one without these accoutrements. He spoke very softly, hardly opening his mouth, but he delivered each word in an inimitable, precise way. His handwriting recalls his speech to me: it is exact, drawn. His manuscripts were like him also, which is to say as the French say `fin'. No one ever saw him wash - he had a horror of soap. Instead he was forever rubbing his fingers with pumice. He was always very poor, poor by conviction, I think. He lived in a poor section and his neighbours seemed to appreciate his coming among them: he was greatly respected by them. His apartment was also very poor. It did not have a bed but only a hammock. In winter Satie would fill bottles with hot water and put them flat in a row underneath his hammock. It looked like some strange kind of marimba. I remember once when someone had promised him some money he replied: `Monsier, what you have said did not fall on a deaf ear.'
"His sarcasm depended on French classic usages. The first time I heard `Socrate', at a séance where he played it for a few of us, he turned around at the end and said in perfect bourgeoisie: `Voila, messiers, dames.'
"I met him in 1913, I believe, at any rate I photographed him with Debussy in that year. Debussy introduced him to me and Debussy `protected' and remained a good friend to him. In those early years he played many of his compositions for me at the paino (I don't think he knew much about instruments and I prefer `Socrate' as he played it to the clumsy orchestra score.) I always thought him literarily limited. The titles are literary, and whereas Klee's titles are literary they do not limit the painting; Satie's do, I think, and they are very much less amusing the second time. But the trouble with `Socrate' is that it is metrically boring. Who can stand that much regularity? All the same, the music of Scorates' death is touching and dignifying in a unique way. Satie's own sudden and mysterious death - shortly after `Socrate' [this is odd because the piece was premiered in 1918 and Satie died in 1925 - CSM] - touched me too. He had been turned towards religion near the end of his life and he started going to Communion. I saw him after church one morning and he said in that extraordinary manner of his: `Alors, j'ai un peu communiqué ce matin.' He became ill very suddenly and died quickly and quietly."
Slonimsky, in the third edition of "Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians" says, in part, of Satie: "celebrated French composer who elevated his eccentricities and verbal virtuosity to the plane of high art."
Again, this is the kind of disk you should get and enjoy for so many reasons not the least of which is the fun of hearing these pieces in a new way because they are performed on guitar.

The young Benjamin Britten was profligate with scores--three of these pieces are unheard since his student days, yet hardly inferior to works of his maturity. The 1939 "Young Apollo," his seven-minute fanfare for piano, string quartet, and strings, is marginally the least obscure: its inventive drive and vigor are clearly Britten, and yet, like the other pieces here, in some sense the radical road not taken. The Double Concerto of 1932 for violin and viola announces itself with broody discords and moves rapidly into eloquent fiddling from the two soloists--Gidon Kremer and Yuri Bashmet respond well to this music and give it its full and considerable weight. The 1930 Portraits for string orchestra, the second featuring Bashmet again as soloist in a moody self-portrait, foreshadow much of what Britten was to do later with string orchestra. Nagano deserves congratulations for selecting this innovative program and for the restraint needed in performing work so delicate and inventive; he finally breaks out into virtuosity in the finale of the small-orchestra version of the Sinfonietta, making a case for its being quite as fine as the chamber version Britten acknowledged as his Op. 1. --Roz KaveneyCustomer Reviews:
An unusually fine window into early Britten.......2004-06-18
My favorite is a work I had never heard before this recording, "Young Apollo" for piano and strings. About seven minutes long, it is ripe with gorgeous harmonies, catchy rhythms, and its sunny spirit is just beautifully handled by Nagano and the orchestra. Needless to say, it makes a fine, attention-getting start to the recording.
The rest of the CD is terrific, ending with an impressively virtuosic performance of the "Sinfonietta," in its version for small orchestra. Erato's sound quality is lovely -- very warm and natural -- only adding to the pleasure.

Catalan music full of rich muscial spices - performed by a master of the guitar.......2006-01-06
Federico Mompou was a fine Spanish (specifically Catalan) composer who lived from 1893 - 1987. He wrote mostly for the piano, but did write some pieces for guitar. The Suite Compostelana was written for Segovia and has become a mainstay in the repertoire of classical guitarists. Few can play it with the mastery and poetry of Peter Fletcher and we are glad to have it on this disk. The Canciones y danzas (Songs and dances) were written for piano, except for number thirteen (track 19 here), which was written for guitar. So, Mr. Fletcher has transcribed all the others for guitar. And he achieved a great deal in his transcriptions. They all sound like guitar music, but extremely demanding guitar music. There is so much going on in the way of accompaniment and melody that you would be forgiven if you thought two guitars were playing, but it is all done with two hands, one guitar, and a special musical talent.
Yet, the playing sounds so effortless and music is so free and wide ranging. While it is certainly tonal music, Mompou uses very interesting harmonies that add a great many Spanish spices. When he uses dissonant harmonies they are never there to be merely harsh, they sound rich and just right.
I would love to watch Mr. Fletcher play and see how he gets all those musical effects. This kind of musicianship lets you know there is so much more to this instrument than you would suspect from the kind of guitar playing we normally here and is lauded as "great". Once you here this, nearly everything else will not satisfy.
Great transcriptions, but an even more sparkling performance!.......2005-07-15

Historic Organs of Philadelphia, produced by OHS........2007-02-14
This project of revitalizing special historical organs, 32 here, is very interesting by the variety of pieces and styles, all put together to entertain people. Let put it that way: it's a popular approach to classical organ, not too crunchy for an unfamiliar audience. Just few theatre organ pieces which are frankly not my cup of tea.
With four Cds, the repertoire is ample (more then 50 pieces), and the variety of genre makes room for everyone's taste. The only weakness, which is not proper to this particular set, is some lack in interpretation, maybe due to the variety of the repertoire without common approach. So, what it gains in size may be lost in style. Few interpretations are fair and recording at times, quite standard.
Few good discoveries though: Sowerby's Pageant Cd 1,1 with a continuo on the pedal : an athletic performance, Roger Ducasse Cd 1,2 quite exiting. The Chopin Cd 1,3 could be better. Rapidly performed, this piece is to my view, better on piano, so the organ deep breathing is not very accurate, but for sure, it makes the effect. Pieces including quires are very interesting and easy going: Cd 2,3 for instance puts you in the mood of sing along !
On the whole, a good set for collectors, those who like organ as instrument more then repertoire, those who prefer a relaxing and pure pleasure of listening while in concert on weekdays... Nothing heavy or too much conceptual as some other organ performances are at times.
