Sickly, effeminate broadway adaptations of the movie soundtrack. The rendition of Hushabye Mountain is... it makes me sick thinking about it. Don't purchase if your looking for anything remotely similar to the original movie soundtrack. When in a rush, I mistakenly purchased thinking it was the original.

2 out of 5 stars Chitty Chitty Blah Blah.......2006-01-27

WOW!! I have no clue what is happeneing to broadway? What is with the boring show of this year like, Little Women, The Light in the Piazza, The woman in White and this crap, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
Now just from the title this show should be a romping, roaring, good-time musical. Instead we get half-assed atempts at being cute which in turn are syrupy enough to keep New York in pancakes FOR-EV-ER! The sappy-ness goes way overboard when the KIDS, sing "Truly Scrumptious" to , you guessed it! Truly Scrumptious.
Other AWFUL songs include:
You Two
Them Three
Toot Sweets
Think Vulgar!
Hushabye Mountain
Come to the Funfair
Me Ol' Bamboo
Posh
Vulgarian National Anthem
The Roses of Success
Kiddie-Widdie-Winkies
Teamwork
Chu-Chu Face
The Bombie Samba
Doll on a Music Box/Truly Scrumtious (Reprise)
You Two/Chitty Prayer
Chitty Flies Home

The only good song in the entire show is the title one and it came from the original movie, As did some of the others but you would never be able to tell because they are done so badly.

. . . but if you've seen the show recently, only know that the charming song "Speak English!" is not on it, but instead the original "Think Vulgar!" A disappointment, to be sure, but not a deterrant.

5 out of 5 stars The Distilled Simplicity of Erik Satie Realized by Peter Fletcher.......2006-01-21

Erik Satie (1865 - 1925) remains an enigma to the classical music world. His compositions are so apparently transparent and minimalist that he simply defied classification for years. Highly regarded among the brilliant minds of his time, composers such as Debussy, Ravel, Stravinsky, Milhaud, his purity of impulse of creation, reducing the excesses of Romanticism to what would open the way toward modern music, is still a point of revelation.

Peter Fletcher is not only a brilliant musician, but he is also a musicologist whose absorption in the music that he elects to perform demonstrates sensitivity to the composer's impulses that allows him to enter the difficult world of transcription. This generous recording of the music of Erik Satie includes works that are indeed standard repertoire (the 'Gymnopedies' and 'Gnossiennes' are often performed by pianists and by orchestras in the famous transcriptions by Debussy, as well as the rarely heard works such as 'Sports et Divertissements' that Fletcher performs impeccably along with the French poetry beautifully recited by an uncredited female reader ('Tiny Thoughts for Children'). And after an array of jewels Fletcher ends this recital with the lovely waltz 'Je te veux'. Ah, Paris!

The recorded sound is warm in presence with excellent engineering. But in the end it is Fletcher's suave tone and quiet surface (no fingers on strings sounds here!) that allows us to simply listen to the gentle genius of Satie's melodies. No higher praise could be paid a performer. Highly recommended,
Grady Harp, January 06

5 out of 5 stars A broad range of gems from a very influential and intersting artist and personality - played beautifully on guitar.......2006-01-11

This is a disk of very charming and witty music played masterfully in very fine transcriptions for guitar. Peter Fletcher is a musician of great sensitivity and a master of his instrument. Somehow, he makes all of these pieces come across wonderfully well. The parts are all cleanly heard and their fun, wit, and even mystical aspects are all communicated.

The notes provided are very helpful. The listener can get the background of all the pieces as well as the English translation of the narrated portions of the large work on the disk, "Sports et Divertissements" from 1914. You will get to hear the familiar Satie (The "Three Gymnopédies" from 1888, the sad Rag-Time from Parade (commemorating the sinking of the Titanic) from 1919, to several quite unfamiliar and delightful gems.

However, I believe that, more than for most other composers of significance, it is quite helpful to get some idea of the character and personality of Erik Satie in order to come to terms with his music.

Sorry for the long quote to follow, but it is insightful. In "Conversations with Igor Stravinsky" when asked what he recalled of Satie, the composer said, "He was certainly the oddest person I have ever known, but the most rare and consistently witty person, too. I had a great liking for him and he appreciated my friendliness, I think, and liked me in return. With his pince-nez, umbrella, and galoshes he looked a perfect schoolmaster, but he looked just as much like one without these accoutrements. He spoke very softly, hardly opening his mouth, but he delivered each word in an inimitable, precise way. His handwriting recalls his speech to me: it is exact, drawn. His manuscripts were like him also, which is to say as the French say `fin'. No one ever saw him wash - he had a horror of soap. Instead he was forever rubbing his fingers with pumice. He was always very poor, poor by conviction, I think. He lived in a poor section and his neighbours seemed to appreciate his coming among them: he was greatly respected by them. His apartment was also very poor. It did not have a bed but only a hammock. In winter Satie would fill bottles with hot water and put them flat in a row underneath his hammock. It looked like some strange kind of marimba. I remember once when someone had promised him some money he replied: `Monsier, what you have said did not fall on a deaf ear.'

"His sarcasm depended on French classic usages. The first time I heard `Socrate', at a séance where he played it for a few of us, he turned around at the end and said in perfect bourgeoisie: `Voila, messiers, dames.'

"I met him in 1913, I believe, at any rate I photographed him with Debussy in that year. Debussy introduced him to me and Debussy `protected' and remained a good friend to him. In those early years he played many of his compositions for me at the paino (I don't think he knew much about instruments and I prefer `Socrate' as he played it to the clumsy orchestra score.) I always thought him literarily limited. The titles are literary, and whereas Klee's titles are literary they do not limit the painting; Satie's do, I think, and they are very much less amusing the second time. But the trouble with `Socrate' is that it is metrically boring. Who can stand that much regularity? All the same, the music of Scorates' death is touching and dignifying in a unique way. Satie's own sudden and mysterious death - shortly after `Socrate' [this is odd because the piece was premiered in 1918 and Satie died in 1925 - CSM] - touched me too. He had been turned towards religion near the end of his life and he started going to Communion. I saw him after church one morning and he said in that extraordinary manner of his: `Alors, j'ai un peu communiqué ce matin.' He became ill very suddenly and died quickly and quietly."

Slonimsky, in the third edition of "Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians" says, in part, of Satie: "celebrated French composer who elevated his eccentricities and verbal virtuosity to the plane of high art."

Again, this is the kind of disk you should get and enjoy for so many reasons not the least of which is the fun of hearing these pieces in a new way because they are performed on guitar.

The young Benjamin Britten was profligate with scores--three of these pieces are unheard since his student days, yet hardly inferior to works of his maturity. The 1939 "Young Apollo," his seven-minute fanfare for piano, string quartet, and strings, is marginally the least obscure: its inventive drive and vigor are clearly Britten, and yet, like the other pieces here, in some sense the radical road not taken. The Double Concerto of 1932 for violin and viola announces itself with broody discords and moves rapidly into eloquent fiddling from the two soloists--Gidon Kremer and Yuri Bashmet respond well to this music and give it its full and considerable weight. The 1930 Portraits for string orchestra, the second featuring Bashmet again as soloist in a moody self-portrait, foreshadow much of what Britten was to do later with string orchestra. Nagano deserves congratulations for selecting this innovative program and for the restraint needed in performing work so delicate and inventive; he finally breaks out into virtuosity in the finale of the small-orchestra version of the Sinfonietta, making a case for its being quite as fine as the chamber version Britten acknowledged as his Op. 1. --Roz Kaveney

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An unusually fine window into early Britten.......2004-06-18

For admirers of Benjamin Britten's work, this recording will probably be seen as indispensable, given the rarity of the pieces. All are engaging, and played with great spirit by the Halle Orchestra with Kent Nagano at the helm.

My favorite is a work I had never heard before this recording, "Young Apollo" for piano and strings. About seven minutes long, it is ripe with gorgeous harmonies, catchy rhythms, and its sunny spirit is just beautifully handled by Nagano and the orchestra. Needless to say, it makes a fine, attention-getting start to the recording.

The rest of the CD is terrific, ending with an impressively virtuosic performance of the "Sinfonietta," in its version for small orchestra. Erato's sound quality is lovely -- very warm and natural -- only adding to the pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars Four Works of Youth Worth Obtaining.......1999-10-16

I was amazed, after I heard the piece, to learn that Britten had written the Double Concerto at the tender age of 18. This is a piece that could easily find its way into the standard repertoire. There's a lot of mature Britten here. The work is both immediately engaging and thought-provoking, like the best of his other concertos and string quartets. Obviously that must have been what attracted Bashmet and Kremer to the piece. These superstars are exactly the right prescription for a successful performance - 100% commitment and unparalleled musicianship. The other pieces are also engaging, of course: "Young Apollo" and "Two Portraits" are in that category of Britten where the composer goes out on a limb compositionally but doesn't cut off the branch behind him. Most Britten lovers already know the Sinfonietta, Op. 1. Here we have an alternative orchestration, rediscovered in the 1980's, in an excellent, balanced performance and recording. The Halle under Kent Nagano is superb. Do yourself a favor - get this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Catalan music full of rich muscial spices - performed by a master of the guitar.......2006-01-06

You want this disk. You really do. I don't care whether you have ever heard fine guitar playing before or not; this disk is something special. Peter Fletcher brings so much mastery and inspiration to this music that you will hear things in guitar playing that you had not suspected before. I heard so many different tonal colors, articulations, and timbres that were absolutely in the service of the music that I was dumbfounded. Frankly, how he achieves some of these sounds is beyond me. How do you mute the chords you are strumming while bringing out a compound melodic line (that is a single melodic line that is really two lines) - listen to track 8 to hear this.

Federico Mompou was a fine Spanish (specifically Catalan) composer who lived from 1893 - 1987. He wrote mostly for the piano, but did write some pieces for guitar. The Suite Compostelana was written for Segovia and has become a mainstay in the repertoire of classical guitarists. Few can play it with the mastery and poetry of Peter Fletcher and we are glad to have it on this disk. The Canciones y danzas (Songs and dances) were written for piano, except for number thirteen (track 19 here), which was written for guitar. So, Mr. Fletcher has transcribed all the others for guitar. And he achieved a great deal in his transcriptions. They all sound like guitar music, but extremely demanding guitar music. There is so much going on in the way of accompaniment and melody that you would be forgiven if you thought two guitars were playing, but it is all done with two hands, one guitar, and a special musical talent.

Yet, the playing sounds so effortless and music is so free and wide ranging. While it is certainly tonal music, Mompou uses very interesting harmonies that add a great many Spanish spices. When he uses dissonant harmonies they are never there to be merely harsh, they sound rich and just right.

I would love to watch Mr. Fletcher play and see how he gets all those musical effects. This kind of musicianship lets you know there is so much more to this instrument than you would suspect from the kind of guitar playing we normally here and is lauded as "great". Once you here this, nearly everything else will not satisfy.

5 out of 5 stars Great transcriptions, but an even more sparkling performance!.......2005-07-15

If you're a classical guitar fan, you should know at least a little of Mompou's music. Fletcher did, and obviously got the bug, because he delivers a great deal more of Mompou's piano pieces by transcribing them for guitar for the first time. This takes a lot of time and hard work of which Mr. Fletcher is to be applauded. However, the real applause goes to Peter's performance. No mistaking Fletcher for a Parkening protege (and fan) here - the playing sparkles! Great phrasing, dynamics and tone color really breath the life into these - Mompou would be proud. A VERY enjoyable listen and I must add, a great recording (specifically of the engineering too - the guitar has been captured wonderfully on this album). Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Peter Fletcher makes the guitar sing.......2003-10-18

Usually I only write reviews of CDs when the CD inspires me to do so, either negatively of positively. In this case, I'm happy to say that it was positive inspiration. After listening to this CD I was amazed at the subtleties of expression that Peter Fletcher exudes from his guitar. It's as if the guitar is singing to you. This is what the guitar is all about. No other instrument can sing in such subtleties and it can only truly "sing" in the lap of the best performers. Let me give you an example of what I mean. Listen to the sample of the beginning of the Preludio from the Suite Compostelana performed by Mr. Fletcher. It starts out barely audible and subtly increases in volume then diminishes then increases again; this arching of dynamics is true musical poetry. Listen for the tasteful use of vibrato and color throughout these pieces. It's what makes these this CD so interesting, enjoyable and touching to listen to. (NOTE: Color on the guitar is achieved in several ways, one by plucking the strings closer to the bridge or farther away. Closer to the bridge gives a tinnier sound and farther away gives a warmer rounded sound). Let's compare Peter Fletcher's performance with another young guitarist, Antigoni Goni on Naxos (ASIN: B0000014FB Catalog number 553774 or 8553774). Try sampling Ms. Goni's performance of the Preludio and compare it to Mr. Fletcher's. You'll see that Ms. Goni's does not add the dynamics and color that Mr. Fletcher does. To be honest though, I did like Ms. Goni's slower tempo on the Canción from the Suite Compostelana, but over all Mr. Fletcher takes the prize for me. In fact, I've listened to various pieces of the Suite Compostelana performed by Mr. Segovia, Mr. Parkening, Mr. Tennant, and Mr. Bream as well. All have their strengths and weaknesses. Mr. Fletcher's is the most poetic and musically satisfying performance of all of them. Regarding the rest of the CD, Mompou's 14 Canciónes y Danzas. I was first introduced to these piano pieces in 1997 by Stephen Hough on the Hyperion label (CDA66963) and in 1998 by Jordi Maso on Naxos (8.554332). All but No. 13 were transcribed for the guitar by Peter Fletcher himself. No. 13 is an original composition for guitar. This is the first and only recording of these pieces on guitar. Thanks to Mr. Fletcher, this adds a major work to the guitar repertoire. His transcriptions reveal a superb kinship with Mompou's music. His performances of the 14 Canciónes y Danzas are superbly subtle and delicate and sometimes bold and brash when called for by the music. His love for Mompou's music shines through. You'll find much touchingly beautiful music to replenish your soul in this CD. The recorded quality is very good. THIS CD IS A MUST HAVE. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting new material for the guitar!.......2003-06-21

Here is a wonderful new set of pieces to add to the often too-limited repertoire for the classical (read:Spanish) guitar. Mompou was a Catalan composer who wrote not only for guitar, but also for piano. Mr. Fletcher plays these pieces with the proper combination of inner feeling and outer flash. To his further credit, he transcribed most of the pieces here for guitar from their original piano versions in an Atlanta coffeehouse. Raise a cup of Java and listen one of the most exciting classical guitar CD's in years!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent performance and transcriptions.......2002-10-02

The Suite Compostelana is a staple for concert guitarists, and here receives a beautifully shaded and shaped performance. The real treats are the guitarist's own transcriptions of Mompou's atmospheric and translucent piano miniatures, many of which I'm guessing may only be known to connoiseurs. This is fine playing, very well recorded and generous at nearly 80 minutes.

4 out of 5 stars Best Brass Band Blows Heavy Stuff!.......2001-03-03

This is not a recording for the novice brass band listener. Though the performance of the great Black Dyke band is, as always, virtually flawless, this music is definitely not "easy listening." All of the pieces on the CD are first section test pieces, composed especially for the Brass Band National Championships of Great Britain. The best of the best composers (Percy Fletcher, Edward Elgar, and others) are represented. These pieces are written to challange the finest brass bands, and Black Dyke demonstrates why they are often on the top of everyone's list of "all time greats." The music represented can and will be enjoyed at some level by every listener, novice or not. For full enjoyment, arm yourself with some liquid refreshment, a full score, and some space where you can crank up the volume a little bit. Marvel, then, at how Black Dyke can achieve such beautiful phrasing and dynamic contrast while playing all those notes!

4 out of 5 stars Historic Organs of Philadelphia, produced by OHS........2007-02-14

At first sight, this 4 Cds set is quite pale with a more than sober presentation, entirely flat green coloured. But overcoming this unusual appearance worthed the price. Lets mention for instance, the booklet: 43 pages, an anthology by itself. Well documented and full of explanations, pictures, details of all kinds, it's a must to the listening.

This project of revitalizing special historical organs, 32 here, is very interesting by the variety of pieces and styles, all put together to entertain people. Let put it that way: it's a popular approach to classical organ, not too crunchy for an unfamiliar audience. Just few theatre organ pieces which are frankly not my cup of tea.

With four Cds, the repertoire is ample (more then 50 pieces), and the variety of genre makes room for everyone's taste. The only weakness, which is not proper to this particular set, is some lack in interpretation, maybe due to the variety of the repertoire without common approach. So, what it gains in size may be lost in style. Few interpretations are fair and recording at times, quite standard.

Few good discoveries though: Sowerby's Pageant Cd 1,1 with a continuo on the pedal : an athletic performance, Roger Ducasse Cd 1,2 quite exiting. The Chopin Cd 1,3 could be better. Rapidly performed, this piece is to my view, better on piano, so the organ deep breathing is not very accurate, but for sure, it makes the effect. Pieces including quires are very interesting and easy going: Cd 2,3 for instance puts you in the mood of sing along !

On the whole, a good set for collectors, those who like organ as instrument more then repertoire, those who prefer a relaxing and pure pleasure of listening while in concert on weekdays... Nothing heavy or too much conceptual as some other organ performances are at times.
