4 out of 5 stars Hell Up in Harlem.......2007-06-13

I've been accused in the past of being disrespectful to the rap genre and its artists. Excuse me for being a black person who's tired of seeing blacks disgrace themselves for the sake of a dollar. No, I don't like Ludacris or Snoop Dogg and other men who make millions for saying 100 times worse things about black women than what Don Imus got fired for. But, I can be open minded, and I can enjoy some hip hop. No Way Out was a hot album released back in 1997 during a time when rap music still had some things going for it. It was originally titled Hell Up in Harlem, but was changed after Notorius BIG's death. Yes, P.Diddy at the time was a sampling fool, but he was a talented sampler. And this music is very entertaining. P.Diddy is not an admirable person in my book, but this album and other albums he produced in the 90s shows he knew a thing or two about entertaining. What happened in the 21st century, though?

There is no modern day rap song like It's All About the Benjamins. I bought this album on tape back in '97 and loaned it to someone who is not interested in returning it, so I had to get the cd. I could have lived without it if not mainly for ...Benjamins and the fact I could get it used here for a penny. I was disappointed, however, to realize the word "He/\brews" had been edited out in my copy despite it being the adult version. What is up with this? Since when is "stack chips like He/\brews" an off limits phrase? It's an uncensored rap album. Nothing should be edited.

Highlights: It's All About the Benjamins, I Love You Baby, I'll Be Missing You(despite it being shorter than the radio version), Victory, Been Around the World, Can't Nobody Hold Me Down, and Do You Know.

5 out of 5 stars Cool Jiggy Hip Hop.......2006-12-14

Back in 1997, Puff Daddy & the Bad Boy Camp Owned the radio. While this album was no nowhere near as good in the lyrics department as say Nas or Jeru The Damja it wans't meant to be. This CD is a party CD staright out and while songs like Is This The End and If I Should Die Tonight have deeper meaning the majoirty of the singles like Been Around The World, Can't Nobody Hold Me Down and Don't Stop are just plain fun. I love New York HIP HOP but every now then it's cool to have some fun and this album is just that.

1 out of 5 stars The Down-Fall of Hip-Hop.......2006-10-24

I respect Biggie. I'm more of an old school fan though, so I can't say that I listen to his music very much, but I have total respect for him; along with 2Pac as well. I just wonder HOW much more influential he would have been in the Hip-Hop community if Puff Daddy hadn't had walked all over his grave.
I saw VH1's Hip-Hop Honors last week (which was a great show by the way), where they payed tribute to some of the most influential rappers of all time, including Rakim, KRS-One, and Africa Bambaataa, and to pay tribute to The Beastie Boys, they put together a threesome of Q-Tip, Fabulous, and (guess who...) Puff Daddy, to rap The Beastie Boy's legendary Paul Revere. Q-Tip and Fabulous were terrific, as they are more in-tune to the old school style, but every word that came out of Puff Daddy's mouth was absolutely painful. I was shocked to discover that VH1 had actually ALLOWED Puff Daddy to be in the presence of some of the greatest rappers to have ever graced this earth. Rappers who Puff Daddy could offer NO tribute to since all his music has ever done is bring down everything they had established back in the late 80s and early 90s.
Puff Daddy is what I consider to be the down-fall of Hip-Hop in the mid 90s. He was, and still is, such a predictable producer and promoter of music. I don't even care to listen to his new album, Press Play, because I already know exactly what it will sound like; typical mainstream radio pop. I can't exactly understand his motives, although it probably is simply for the love of money or fame, but all I know is that around the time of No Way Out, Hip-Hop began to take a tremendous nose-dive into a Hip-Hop world dominated by mainstream trash. I just wish that Puff Daddy didn't have to throw away everything that Biggie and 2pac and DOZENS of other rappers before them had established.

5 out of 5 stars Puff Daddy - No Way Out.......2006-10-15

With the death of The Notorious B.I.G. behind him, Sean "Puffy" Combs aka Puff Daddy released his first solo album, "No Way Out." Even though some if not most of it was recorded before Biggie's death, some of the album reflects what occurred on that horrible night and also keeps his memory alive. Can Puff pull an Eazy-E on us and come out of the C.E.O.'s position and make a hot album?

This is definitly a good album for someone who doesn't write his own lyrics. Mostly all the tracks could have been radio hits and some of them are even classics. Puff's goal was to show the world that Bad Boy Records could still make hits without Biggie and by god he proved just that. R.I.P. B.IG.!

5 out of 5 stars Hate Puffy all you want, but don't front on this classic............2006-09-22

No one but no one expected Puffy to come back after losing Big and getting his butt handed to him by Pac. I definitely thought Bad Boy was on their way out. Thus the title "No Way Out". Sometimes when you're in too deep to quit, you have no choice but to come out swinging. And that's what happened. The BIG tribute was good that he was giving BIG his respect, but it also gave Puff some legs to slide a new career as a rapper right under everyone's noses. All about the Benjamins ruled the airwaves in 97. Then he had the Lox and his next superstar Mase spitting and dancing in the faces of their enemies. The secret bangers on this joint are Young G's with Jigga and BIG and I Love You Baby featuring Black Rob.

3 out of 5 stars Literally A Last Gasp for Spooky Tooth.......2007-02-04

In 1968 I was drawn into Spooky Tooth, a band that at the time was one of Island Record's "best kept secrets." Already familiar with many of Island's avant garde rock acts (Traffic, Fairport Convention, Free, Jethro Tull) I was eager to hear what these lads from Carlisle had to offer. I was floored by "It's All About" and even more impressed by "Spooky Two." from there the splintering of the band and the subsequent releases "Ceremony" and "The Last Puff" were clearly downhill endeavors. This re-issue of "The Last Puff" demonstrates that fact with the original tracks augmented by the somewhat earlier singles. A case in point is the album version of Elton John's "Son Of Your Father," which when compared to the earlier single release of the same tune (even using the same instrumental track), shows that Gary Wright's strong lead vocals intertwined with Mike Harrison's are absent from the album's rendition and the latter suffers somewhat from their omission. Truth is this album was a contractual obligation and not really a credible step forward. Still it does mark the final stage of an extraordinary band, and can be appreciated for what it is: a final hurrah or a last puff.

Emerging quickly from the aftermath of Sean "P. Diddy" Combs's New York-club shooting trial is the optimistically titled The Saga Continues, a compilation masquerading as Combs's third solo album. Though he was found not guilty, the incident is clearly very fresh in the Bad Boy CEO's mind. On the mic, he vents about the criminal justice system and player haters, and he also dedicates a thinly veiled verse to his ex-girlfriend, Jennifer Lopez, on "I Need a Girl." The only thing that's changed about Combs since his last outing is his name (from Puff Daddy to P. Diddy). On the mildly gritty "Bad Boy for Life," he raps "Don't worry if I write rhymes / I write checks," and the wholesale musical swipes of the past are just a little subtler now. The Neptunes-produced "Diddy" pilfers from Rakim, Boogie Down Productions, and Nice & Smooth, and even recent Bad Boy product is fair game, as Black Rob's "Whoa!" is recycled on "That's Crazy." Most of the rest of the production and vocal contributions here come from a mix of loyalists and newcomers, and predictably wallow in mediocrity. Aside from Faith Evans and Carl Thomas ("Can't Believe"), on this album's evidence, the Bad Boy Family is now pretty nondescript. The loss of key franchise players over the years to death, departure, religious conversion, and prison means Combs and his label will themselves need an equally drastic turnaround to scale their previous heights. --Del F. 4 out of 5 stars Bad Boy's Return To The Top.......2006-12-14

After being acquitted, Diddy released his strongest work in years with The Saga Continues. With it's first single Let's Get It produced by Rockwilder and feat. Black Rob & G-Dep it was clear that Bad Boy was back. The album also featured the hit singles Diddy,Bad Boy For Life and I Need A Girl.

4 out of 5 stars P. Diddy - The Saga Continues..........2006-10-16

After another two years since his last release, "Forever," Puff Daddy, now P. Diddy returns with his 3rd solo album. It's filled with lots of features showcasing the newest bad boy roster and some tracks Diddy isn't even on so I guess this is kind of like a compilation. Can Bad Boy survive in the new millenium or will they end up extinct just like Death Row and Ruthless?

Being a big fan of Bad Boy and all, this album really let me down. There's a couple great tracks, a couple wack tracks and the rest are good but nothing memorable. The production lacked majorly for the most part not to mention there's multiple tracks where Diddy isn't even on so people buying this album to just hear him will be disapointed as well. Probably the wackest cd Bad Boy ever put out. Don't even bother with this effort.

Sean "Puffy" Combs, Puffy Daddy, Sean John, P Diddy or Diddy. When he figures out what he wants to be called is when I figure out if I like him. Meanwhile, there still isn't one good DVD set for Star Wars.

4 out of 5 stars The Saga Continues by P. Diddy.......2006-02-14

For years now, Puff has been telling us all that Bad Boy "can't stop", "wont stop" and that they "don't even know how to stop." On the title track of P Diddy and the Family's newest album, "The Saga Continues", Puff switches it up a little and says, "There's certain things in live that you can stop, and there's certain things in life that can't be stopped." A fitting intro to the CD, being that the sample off the track is also used by the Chicago Bulls upon their entrance onto the basketball court.

Although "The Saga Continues" was supposed to be a Bad Boy compilation rather then a Puff solo, Puff fills the album with in-house guest spots in an effort to really give everyone a taste of what's to come. The stars of the album are the usual suspects, Black Rob, G-Dep, and Mark Curry. But many newcomers also make their presence felt, such as former Harlem World member Loon, Bristal, the Hoodfellaz, and Kain, Puff's Caucasian prodigy. While some may wonder who all these new guys are, don't worry; you'll know who they all are soon enough.

For anyone left doubting of G-Dep's skill, the album features a great number of guest appearances from Dep, including one of only three solo tracks. On "Child of the Ghetto", also the name of Dep's upcoming opus, Dep laces an eerie violin beat courtesy of Coptic, with grimy descriptions of ghetto life on the streets of Harlem. Of course, there's also the sonic hit "Lets Get It" along with "Blast Off" which also features Mark Curry and Loon. Nearly every track that G-Dep appears on is tight, which hopefully will reflect his upcoming solo album.

Aside from Dep, the other neophytes assure their roles in the game and shine in their own right. Mark Curry and his husky voice provide the finale verse on the current single "Bad Boy 4 Life", and he also appears on the album finale "The Last Song". Over a hype mechanical beat, Curry claims he's"...the official bona fide, tested and tried, I get in like cancer and work from the inside..." Even the white rapper trend is taken to another level by Puff. On the g-funkish "Lonely", Kain spits "Come on Mya ride it with me, leave the lame respect the game, when you hangin on my arm you expect the same, an ecstasy when you sex the Kain, I only link with the wealthiest and only cop jewels if it drops Celsius..." Recently incarcerated Shyne however, is nowhere to be found on the album. That's probably the most disappointing element of the entire album.

There are a few appearances by outsiders, such as Kokane on "Lonely" and Eightball & MJG on "Roll With Me". The R & B element is kept pretty much to a minimum, with a few appearances by upstart Cheri Dennis, and of course the beautiful "Can't Believe" by Carl Thomas and Faith. The typical Hitmen producers aren't as prominent on this cd either, focusing more on works by Yogi and Mario "Yellow Man" Winans. Not to say that these aren't welcome changes, both Yogi and Yellow Man produce some of the albums best tracks. There's also a few notable others, such as the aforementioned Coptic, Bink on "The Last Song", Buckwild on the Cheri Dennis solo "So Complete", and "producers of the moment" the Neptunes on possibly the albums worst song, "Diddy".

Overall, if this is what is to be expected from Bad Boy in the future, then Puff can rest assured that he'll be riding the top for a long while. His production, r & b, and lyrical squads are unparalleled by any other label. Hopefully Puff will keep the boys busy in the studio and we'll be enjoying a plethora of new material well into the new millennium. Stay up Shyne, we miss you.

5 out of 5 stars Why does everyone hate it so much?.......2005-12-24

I personally think this is a rather inspired and at worst, fun remix of Sting's song. For anyone reading this who hasn't heard it, it has been tailored for the 90s R&B/Rap audience who without noticing followed Puff Daddy's massive career throughout this era. The remix basically involves rap verses from Pras (from The Fugees) followed by a "chorus" by Sting singing the main parts of the original "Roxanne", accompanied by extremely "Contemporary R&B" strings. I personally really enjoyed this remix and think that people take it way too seriously in defending the original song. If you are a modern R&B fan (or like 90s R&B) you are likely to love this as I do. If you are to take any remix of a Police "classic" seriously to the point when someone can't remix it, please do not buy it! Hope this helps!

1 out of 5 stars The worst..........2005-01-10

And that be even worse than Sting in dueth with Craig David who ruined Shape Of My Heart with his pathetic Rise And Fall.

I find no good excuse as a big fan of Sting for him to allow this damage strike one of his most famous songs ever.

Puffy is awful, no matter if he's a good dresser. His biggest hit ever, I'll Be Missing You -his adaption of Every Breath You Take- first left me with that well-earned impression.

Stop messing up Stings' fantastic songs, even though he allows you, Puffy!!!

1 out of 5 stars WHAT?.......2004-03-30

Sting, what have you done? Why must everyone keep re-mixing and re-making everything? It's pointless! ARRRRGGHHH! Okay. Enough of that. This used to be a classic. Now, its just some piece of crap that that idiot P. Diddy re-mixed. Seriously, has that guy ever come up with his own song? Please, vote yes on the keep P. Diddy away from music act. Save our music.

1 out of 5 stars Sting fans shouldn't buy this.......2003-10-05

If you're a Puffy Daddy/P. Diddy fan, buy this...I guess. If you're a Sting fan, please don't.

1 out of 5 stars P. Dudley Does It Again....Ooooooh Boy.......2003-07-07

Absolutely HORRID. There's one very important thing to understand here: Sting is a proper songwriter; P. Dudley is not.
He should never have touched this classic to begin with,as he can't come anywhere near Sting or his mastery of songcraft. Seems he wrecks anything he touches--just look what he did with Led Zeppelin's Kashmir. Hey,Dudley,a word of advice: you should only remix what you (think) you could do better,or at least just as good in another way. But for God's sake KEEP AWAY FROM THE CLASSICS!!! that's where your obvious lack of talent truly shines through. :}

Originally, producer/bad boy CEO Sean "Puffy" Combs intended for the debut album from his Puff Daddy persona to feature nothing but non-stop party jams. Unfortunately, the murder of The Notorious B.I.G. (credited here as Executive Producer) threw an ugly spin on the album, resulting in a mixed bag of fun fluff and gangsta posturing. Puffy's delivery is thin and nasal, and his raps uninspired, but help from pals like Lil' Kim, Busta Rhymes, and protégé Mase partially make up for his deficiencies. With his unrivalled knack from nicking hooks--he pilfers from Sting ("I'll Be Missing You"), Grandmaster Flash ("Can't Nobody Hold Me Down") or classical composer Samuel Barber ("No Way Out (Intro)") with equal aplomb--Puff Daddy epitomized homogenized hip-hop. --Kurt B. 4 out of 5 stars Classic.......2005-12-26

The album is a classic especially when clean. The edited version is bad because it omits three songs, but it is good because you get to hear burps, glass smashing, and hicups to censor the curses and profanity. If you like the sounds of it edited get it but if you like originals then get the Explicit version.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as reviews say.......2004-11-27

P.Diddys debut album is considered a classic and with all the hits on it i do consider it a classic, however with that said this cd is not all that great. With the exception of all the singles on this LP it is not very good however all the songs are still listenable

3 out of 5 stars It's alright, explicit version sounds better.......2001-03-21

I know I sound like a bad lil' girl, but it's true. You know what? The clean version doesn't even sound right. All the good songs were taken off due to excessive profanity. So you're really skipping the good songs when you're listening this. A lot changes were made to this album. Track #1-The No Way Out intro sounds the same. Track #2-"Victory" the best song by Puff Daddy, and it's not cuz of Biggie & Busta Rhymes appearance. It just has a tight eerie beat. Track #3-"Been Around The World" was a popular song, both the original version and the remix have a catchy hook. The Madd Rapper skit was taken off. Track #4 (#5 Explicit Version)-"Don't Stop What You're Doing" f/ Lil' Kim is a "party" song. Lil' Kim hooked the song up. Track #5 (6)-"If I Should Die Tonight" is a just a storm interlude with Puffy talking about his grief. Track #6 (#7)-"Do You Know" has background vocals from Kelly Price. Track #7 (#9)-"I Love You Baby", Puffy's love song, features the best rapper on Bad Boy, Black Rob. Track #8 (#10)-The head-banging song of the album is "It's All About The Benjamins", yet another popular single from the album. Track-#9 (#11)-"Pain" is a depressing song, it has you thinking about Biggie. Track-#10 (#13)-"I Got The Power" has The L.O.X. doing their thing. The hook shows the "criminal" side of Puffy. Track #11 (#15)-All I gotta say about this hook of this song is "EN ESPAÑOL". Track #12 (#16)-"I'll Be Missing You" is the tribute to Biggie AKA Notorious B.I.G. featuring Faith Evans & 112. The skit from the beginning of of the track was taken off. Track #13 (#17)-"Can't Nobody Hold Me Down" f/Ma$e, Puffy just had to remake my favorite Ol' School joint called "The Message". The songs that were taken off for clean version were "What You Gonna Do", "Young G's", "Is This The End?", & "Friend".

2 out of 5 stars No Way Out.......2000-11-25

Sometimes I'm compelled to pop in my edited version of Puff Daddy's NO WAY OUT and find that it get either better or worse with each listen. I was very excited to recieve it when someone ordered it for me a few years ago, but even then I was dissappointed with it. I found that that Busta Rhymes verse in VICTORY had been removed. I now realize that this song is so much better with Busta and am now stuck with a useless version of NO WAY OUT considering VICTORY is one of the better songs. Almost every song is sampled. This album was a success when it was out and I wonder if it would have been a success without the samples. If not, you can't hate a person for trying. But it's all sampled and just as dissapointing as you might expect something from Puff Daddy to be. IT'S ALL ABOUT THE BENJIMANS is a classic and is the only song that keeps me from giving this sloppy compact disc one star. It would be wrong because this is the song that started all of those materialistic songs about money, "ice", and cars, etc... Otherwise, the beats are stinky. I LOVE YOU BABY is not such a bad song but and neither id DO YOU KNOW. PAIN is kind of depressing. The songs after track nine are boring.

P.S.- There's a track missing on the clean version.

4 out of 5 stars a rock fan.......2000-06-28

I thought no way out was pretty good. I know puffy could have done better by making some beats of his own and writing some of his OWN lyrics. but all in all it was good my favorite though had to be "It's all about the benjamins." I recommend that you buy this CD.

When MC Lyte rapped "Beat biter / Dope style taker / Tell you to your face you ain't nothing but a faker," she wasn't referring to Puff Daddy, but those words may have echoed in the brains of many non-NY producers--especially those from New Orleans and the Bay Area--upon hearing the bad boy don's second solo effort, Forever. For much of the latter part of the '90s, many New York rappers have included a couple of token G-funk or bounce-influenced tracks on their albums, but on Forever, Puff takes it to extremes, with almost half the album falling into that category. One would think that Puff's lazy, unskilled drawl would fit perfectly with the foreign sonics, but instead, his mumbling is more blatant, twitching erratically like the proverbial fish out of water, especially on cuts like "What You Want" and "Satisfy You" (where he loops the Luniz' classic "I Got 5 On It"). Where he sticks to the usual plan, he pulls it off steadily, and on "Journey Through the Life," a powerful posse cut with Nas, Beanie Sigel, and Lil' Kim, he's created a NY thug cut par excellence. Just goes to show you can't teach an old producer new beats--even if he pays royally for them. --Jon Caramanica

Nobody stunts like Puff. Sorry Birdman. In 1999 BadBoy Records was still living off the success of No Way Out, Life After Death and Mase's Harlem World. So Puff steps to the plate again with Forever. The music is just okay and plays more like a compilation due to the large amount of guest stars. But like I said nobody stunts like Puff Daddy. Dude had the most diamonds and was banging Jennifer Lopez in her prime. Hell, he made JLo who she is today!

Top Joints:
Reverse (Shyne Po rips it)
Journey Through The Life (Great posse cut where Nas and Beans kill the track)

2 out of 5 stars Weak follow up to good first album.......2006-12-14

Like many reviewers have said Bad Boy's downfall began with this weak album. Diddy or Puffy was going through his thug phase and the album shows it. The only songs that showed promise were Is This The End 2, Do You Like It and Satisy You.

1 out of 5 stars Lets clear up one thing.......2006-11-17

I am a hater, to the core. I hate Puffy and thats all it is to it. Now there, you don't have to say it.So on to the review.
First off every lyrical line Puffy spit in this album was outdone by everybody. Every track he had the weakest flow and the worst rhymes. And thats the truth. I don't know how true this is, but I heard Loon was behind most of Puffy's lines on this album. So that should explain the utter wackness in his lyrics. The truth is I don't care who writes his lines. It could be Tupac and Nas doin it, since its not them spittin it, then it actually takes away from the rhymes itself. Almost this entire album is filler. The best tracks is Real N**** and journey through my life. I really didn't feel that beat a whole lot but Nas and Beanie's verses was off the hook. However that is not enough for me to give this album more than one star. Now I love MC Lyte and Public Enemy, but they should get smacked in the back of they heads with crowbars for lettin him mutilate their classics. Thats not musical artistry, thats butcher work. Fake Thug dedication really gets under my skin. The title alone. No disrespect to Biggie as an artist cause I do like him still. But they put a diss on Tupac on Life after Death after he died, then denied it for years. So perhaps the fake thug dedication should be to him, cause thats some sucker s***. I didn't hear his latest album, I'm not going to review it, I didn't even visit that section. If you a fan of this guy, then you gon cop this and his new one regardless. If you like me and hate just about everything he puts out, you won't be caught within a mile of that s***.

4 out of 5 stars Puff Daddy - Forever.......2006-10-15

Two years after his impressive debut, "No Way Out," Puff Daddy returns with his second solo album in 1999. With impressive guest features such as Jay-Z, Redman, Bizzy Bone and Cee-Lo who could go wrong? This album also showcases some of the new Bad Boy roster like Shyne, G. Dep and Mark Curry. Can Puff live up to the hype with this album or will it fall to the sophomore curse.

This is a good effort but doesn't compare to "No Way Out." Most tracks on here are good but there's a couple that are straight up wack. The production is top notch of course. Can't speak on his lyrics because....well they're not his haha. Check it out if you're a fan of Puffy Daddy or Bad Boy Records.

1 out of 5 stars The worst rap album in 1999 (please believe it!!!).......2006-09-01

Just when you thought puffaluffagus coudnt get any wacker he drops this overrated trash called "Forever" and proves us all wrong. We all stand corrected. Whats wrong with this album? Same flaws as the last one: Crappy beats, infantile lyrics and tons of guest features that dont add anything good to this
s--tfest. Decent tracks: Do you like it do you want it and
Real N---as. Filler: I hear voices, Best Friend, Is it the end part2, Satisfy you, PE 2000(what was Public Enemy thinking when they let this slut sample their classic record?), Fake thugs dedication etc. Bottom line: Puffy is a dishonorable mention that nobody wants to admit. He open up the door for all the hippop icons(Jarule, Fabolous, Mase, Loon, Chingy, Nelly etc) that you bash into submission but you never get on his case for what he did. HOW INSANE ARE YOU!!! This album is as bad as the first one and you know it! All of puffy's albums should be trampled by every soccer team in the world just like his face!

They Might Be Giants member John Flansburgh is a bit less smart-alecky than usual on this side-project, but other than that it isn't a huge departure from his usual approach. Unsupervised is an enjoyably scattershot hodgepodge of styles, encompassing a biker instrumental ("Guitar Was the Case"), space-pop esoterica ("Distant Antenna"), loping balladry ("So Long, Mockingbird"), reckless novelty ("Careless Santa") and reconfigured glam ("Hello Hello"), plus tongue-in-cheek tributes to Boston Red Sox pitcher Bill Lee ("What Bothers the Spaceman" and a dead president ("Nixon's the One"). Flansburgh also demonstrates his song-plugging savvy by putting a power-pop spin on Amy Rigby's torch-country classic-to-be "Don't Break the Heart." --Scott Schinder

4 out of 5 stars "It was totally rockin'!".......2004-07-30

For the most part, Mono Puff is a groovier, funkier They Might Be Giants. This album is a lot of fun- definitely something to take on a car trip with you. The only downside of the whole thing is that sometimes the album just sounds like rehashed TMBG- which, at least, isn't plagarism considering the band is led by one-half of TMBG. Still, you feel like it could have been more than this with pointless tracks like "Distant Antenna" and "Nixon's the One". Flansburgh quickly redeems himself with fantastic songs like "Unsupervised", "Hello, Hello" and the touching "Don't I Have the Right?". This is a really fun album and I think you ought to pick it up- it's totally worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Great stuff, lots of fun..........2004-07-19

Well, I must say, that until about 5 minutes ago I did not know this CD was TMBG related. I had purchased this CD from a sale because I liked the sound of it, aand as I am wont to do, bought it because generally you can get a good CD if you buy 3 for $10. And you get to expand your musical tastes.
Anyway, I bought this Cd and took it home. I then proceeded to put it on (as is generally the case). Immediately I noticed the TMGB-ishness of the album. It was staring out at me... saying
"Hey, i know i sound a little second rate, but don't I sound like They Might Be Giants? Just a little?"
"Guitar was the case" was a bit of quirky instrumental fun... which should have been my first clue.
And the title track "Unsupervised (I hit my head)" became, and has long been, a song I constantly sing or hum and often get inexplicably stuck in my head. It is, far and above, a great song.
Sure... the mix is odd. A couple of the tracks possibly miss the mark. In retrospect, this should have been another clue. Most notably for me in this category would be "Don't Break the Heart". Despite the hundred-fold protestations I can hear coming from the peanut gallery of TMBG fans that have also reviewed this album, I just felt that although musically competent, John Flansburgh's voice didn't help the track at all.
"Hello, Hello" is a brilliant cover.. and manages to be almost more of a good song than the original. 'GOODNESS GRACIOUS!'
And "Dr Kildare" is oddly fulfilling, especially given its lyrics. I can't help but find this album appealling (another blatantly obviou clue that this is a TMBG related release!)
Well. In closing... I am appalled to have just found out that all ths time, an album I thought was simply a patchy homage to TMBG is actually by one of the Johns.
It shows bad music-nerdry on my part, and I was dealing an unintentional moral wrong on Mono Puff.... For some years.
In short: Bad Reviewer, but Good Album.

4 out of 5 stars Isolate the sound of Mono Puff from the static........2003-10-06

This is the first solo album by John Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants, despite the "Mono Puff" group name. In many ways, it is similar to a They Might Be Giants album. Some of the songs sound similar to TMBG songs, and in fact, some of them were previously heard on They Might Be Giants dial-a-song phoneline. There are some other songs, though, that most likely would not be at home on a TMBG album. Such as the rocking guitar instrumental "Guitar Was the Case", the sweet ballad "Don't Break the Heart" and the female country song "Have I The Right?". It is good to hear Flansy having fun and stretching himself. If you are a TMBG fan, chances are you will enjoy this album, too.

4 out of 5 stars Sweet Flansy flies solo, with a little help from his friends.......2003-06-26

John Flansburgh, the chubby, bespectacled, baby-faced, left-handed, sweet-voiced, guitar-playing half of the alternative-pop duo They Might Be Giants, was a very busy man in the first half of the 1990s. In addition to his TMBG duties, his side projects included directing music videos, running the Hello CD of the Month Club, and Mono Puff -- a newly formed power trio featuring himself on guitar and lead vocals, Steve Calhoon of Skeleton Key on drums, and veteran bass-player Hal Cragin. Their first full-length album, Unsupervised (1996), is as eclectic as anything Flansy has done with TMBG, only less smart-alecky and more spontaneous. Though it lacks the consistency and cohesion of TMBG's excellent Factory Showroom (released later the same year), there's plenty of nice stuff here.

The disc -- a dose of pure sunshine for those who thought Flansy was underused on TMBG's John Henry (1994) -- begins strongly enough with the instrumental "Guitar Was the Case," a surf-guitar duel between himself and Mike Viola of the Candy Butchers. The semi-autobiographical rocker "Unsupervised, I Hit My Head" is flat-out wonderful, with hilariously self-pitying/self-deprecating lyrics like "Back in the day with my friends 'round me, you could count on me with just one hand" and "I could just cut myself right out my will;" Flansburgh wisely keeps the most personal details of his story to himself, making it easier for us to identify with its general themes of memory, distraction, growing up and screwing up. He sounds terrific on the torchy ballad "So Long, Mockingbird," and his sparse lyrics are quite affecting. With the snappy "Careless Santa," the writer of TMBG's classic "Santa's Beard" (from 1988's Lincoln) offers another holiday tune about a guy who does reprehensible things in a Santa Claus suit; this time, instead of hitting on the narrator's wife, "Santa" steals a bag of money for the narrator, injures him, and pins the crime on him. "What Bothers the Spaceman" is a funky, funny ode to baseball legend Bill "Spaceman" Lee. The minute-long pop confection "Nixon's the One," which takes on our 37th President, could be interpreted as praise or damnation ("When they look back and weigh everything he's done, they will realize: Nixon's the one"). The touching and lovely country-style ballad "Don't I Have the Right?" (in which Flansburgh writes convincingly from a woman's perspective) is brought off beautifully by the Anne Murray-like vocal of guest Nancy Lynn Howell -- she actually sounds like a confused woman who can't get over the fact that she stuck by her man despite his many faults and yet HE rejected HER, and who also doesn't seem to realize that it's herself, and not him, who's keeping her from moving on.

Of course, for a guy who first started writing because he didn't know how to play other people's material, Flansy certainly has a way with cover songs. The jangly "Don't Break the Heart," a wry alt-country love song by Amy Rigby, features what is quite possibly his sweetest performance. The whole band sounds great on the goofy, hard-rocking "Devil Went Down to Newport" (about a surfing contest between God and Satan). On "Hello Hello" (originally recorded by glam-rocker Gary Glitter), the contrast between the band's intensity and Flansy's restrained voice gives the lyrics a more sinister, ominous feel. "Dr. Kildare" is a cover of a ska instrumental, but it also features a few silly, seemingly tossed-off lyrics by Flansburgh.

Despite some experimental moments -- "To Serve Mankind," an instrumental track featuring human voices being played on a Melotron, and "Distant Antenna," a funky instrumental featuring real records scratching along, live radios being tuned, and a kooky voice-over by Romanian actress Elina Lowensohn -- it becomes clear on this album that Flansy generally favors conventional pop and rock grooves and emotionally direct lyrics. To SOME fans of They Might Be Giants, this may appear to be a lack of talent on his part. Flansburgh and TMBG bandmate John Linnell share similar sensibilities and attitudes about music, but Linnell's approach seems more overtly eccentric (and thus more in keeping with TMBG's "quirky" image); Flansy has more in common with fellow troubadours Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, Marshall Crenshaw, and Jonathan Richman, who also work within traditional forms of popular music while giving their lyrics an idiosyncratic touch.

1 out of 5 stars A shockingly banal effort.......2001-07-10

I must say that this album shocked me - and not in a good way. Having followed TMBG since 19 song debut LP, I assumed this side project would be more of the same - unfortunately, I was wrong. Some of the most banal, formulaic music I've heard with, by and large, ambling and uninspired lyrics. The only gem on the album is "Unsupervised, I hit my head." Classic creativity there, and the reason the album earns a star. However, the rest is a mess of way too much percussion and uninspired songsmanship. Listen to the music in distant antennae to see what I mean; that background funk/rock has to be amongst the most elevator-esque, uninspired spoonful of pablum I've encountered. I expected the Devil Went Down to Newport to redeem the album... but what is this version they have? It's fast, it's annoying, it sounds like a 311 cover. I downloaded a demo version, where the tempo was a lot slower, and more melodic... amazing they chose the teeny-bopper version that they did for the album.

If you're interested in sampling a solo project, try John Linnel's (also of TMBG) State Songs.. now there is a truly inspired album. Listen to Utah and New Hampshire to see what I mean.

I purchased this CD back in the day and still pull it out every now and then. I absolutely love this CD! Now my husband is a Puff Johnson fan. Her voice is beautiful, clean, and crisp--it's like Chante Moore's with an En Vogue kind of feel. I wish TRUE artists like Puff would get more recognition. This album is a quality piece of work.

5 out of 5 stars I love this woman's voice!.......2005-07-15

I loved Puff's voice when I first heard it in 1996 and I thought her hairstyle was cute. I have this thing of predicting the success of certain artists. I remember hearing Celine Dion's "Where does my heart beat now" and I instantly knew the world would come to know her voice and talent. I often predict what songs will be hits on other artists' albums. When I listen to her voice she gets under my skin and hits every note I expect her to. I miss her and I want her album. I don't care when it was recorded. Rare talent and good music is hard to find being that these days all you have to be is white and you can make an album or you can have a big butt and people will automatically call you talented. Record companies will give you a deal if you can dance but absolutely cannot sing, yet someone with a heavenly voice like Puff's isn't heard. What an outrage!
