Amazon.com
Producer and A.P.C. records founder Jean Touitou has found a gem in Algerian-Jewish musician Lili Boniche. With his left-handed Stratocaster and a string-heavy octet, Boniche makes a compelling amalgam of North African-French-Spanish root styles, with a twist of cabaret thrown in from his experience over the decades. Touitou enlisted Bill Laswell as a coproducer for Alger Alger, and the New Yorker adds adroitly in-step bass and synthesizer touches to Boniche's crew of topflight musicians, including Armand Suissa on derbouka and trap-drummer Mardoche Maimaran contributing the drummy percussion. Recorded "live" in the studio over two days, Boniche's band veers between a playful pan-Andalusian-Algerian mix of styles and a rhythmic pulse that reveals shades of rai, flamenco, Gypsy styles aplenty, and even klezmer. After these sessions were recorded and edited, the tapes were shipped to New York, where Laswell piloted some ambient studio work, culminating in Boniche Dub. --Derek Rath

5 out of 5 stars It really is best of the classics!.......2005-03-31

This CD is one of the best CDs I have in my collection out of about 100 of them. The songs on here are all of Rossini's most popular songs, I know for a fact since I am a big fan of Rossini. Also the songs on here are all done by the best orchestras. This CD is very relaxing as well as exciting at the same time which makes it enjoyable to listen to. If you are looking for a Rossini CD and want his greatest hits, this is the CD to buy.

5 out of 5 stars A Good CD.......2000-10-29

If you own this CD you know how relaxing it is, but if you don't own it you should buy it because it is a good CD. You can feel and hear the music because it is so good. I really think you should have this CD so you can do the same that I'm doing, writing a review about this CD.

5 out of 5 stars An Interesting CD.......2000-10-28

I really like this cd because the music is so relaxing and so cool that even a 12 year old kid who likes pop music can like this CD. I also think that this CD is good because of the way the tempos change. And buying this CD is at amazon.com is so easy that I think I'll order this CD. Please buy this CD if you like good music, you won't be sorry.

4 out of 5 stars You Might not Know his NAME...but You Know his SONGS!.......2001-02-03

    July 16, 1992.

That's the date I first discovered Pat Alger.

I had bought tickets for an Everly Brothers concert at the Temple Theatre in Tacoma, Washington. A guy named Pat Alger was the opening act.

My bet was he'd be an unknown singer playing forgettable songs...boy was I wrong!

As he went through his song list, I found myself saying

...hey...wait...that's one of my favorite Kathy Mattea songs...

...hey...that's one of my favorite Nancy Giffith songs...

...that's one of my favorite Hal Ketchum songs!

With a simple style and a skill for storytelling, Alger weaves together stories, images and music that are enjoyable, vivid and memorable.

Like other singer/songwriters--Jimmy Webb, Steve Goodman, Leiber & Stoller--my sense is that Pat Alger is often the Man Behind the Curtain in the Musical Land of Oz.

But for that one night in Tacoma, I'm glad he came out from behind his songwriting curtain, so I could get a glimpse of Pat Alger, performer.

It was a great performance, indeed...one that convinced me to buy this impressive CD.

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Talent.......2000-09-10

A writer of songs for many of folk music and country's elite, Alger delivers his tunes in an even more infectious way himself. Alger is one of the singer-songwriters who can write a song with a hook that can become a hit, but which never sounds cliched. The perfect example is "Once in a Blue Moon", which Nancy Griffith has made famous but which comes across much better in Alger's low key styling. Great songs from a fabulous talent.

5 out of 5 stars great songwriter and mellow sounds.......1998-06-19

Pat Alger is one of the best songwriters for Country/Folk/Pop music. His songs tell realistic stories about everyday people. The melodies are flowing and clear. Songs like 'true love' and 'She Came From Ft. Worth' are gems. I enjoy this cd quite a bit!

Chicago Jazz scene singer Typhanie Monique and guitar player Neal Alger team up to create Intrinsic, a tribute to their now years old partnership.

The record is a true gem -- a refreshing less-is-more jazz roots classic where the true stars are Typhanie's gifted voice and Neal's virtouso guitar playing. It's a poweful jazz jam based on the power of the music, its dynamics, its rythm and its sheer beauty.

Typanie does a wonderful artistic interpretation of jazz, rock and blues songs. She goes from melody to vocal improvisation and back with ease and true genius. She imprints her own style in both standars as well as not as well known songs.

Neal does a wonderful job both as an accompanist as well as a gifted solo player. His riffs and solos add a lot of personality to the overall effort.

If you like to hear a few tracks I recommend "I'm Glad there is you", "Afro Blue" as wll as "My Father's Song". Also very interesting are their renditions of "Riders in the Storm" and "Light my Fire". Since the album is not mainstream (yet), a nice feature is that you can actually listen to the albums tracks at the website www.tymoneal.com.

I am sure you will be engaged from the moment you hear this as well as I have been. This is an album destined for greatness.

5 out of 5 stars Shine! The Horatio Alger Musical.......2002-10-26

This is what a Broadway musical is all about. There is heart in the music and the lyrics tell a story. We haven't had anything this exciting in a Broadway musical since "La Cage aux Folles." And the story is exactly what this country needs to hear at this time: an inspirational story about why America is the greatest country in the world. This is what a Broadway musical should be and hearing this score makes us almost sad that we have been deprived of this sort of material for so long. "Shine!" is something different altogether though. The score just never quits with imagination. When will we get the opportunity to see this on stage so that we can for ourselves witness how the songs are interwoven into a storyline. Brilliant! There is not enough one can say about how inspiring this score is.

5 out of 5 stars A New Shine On the American Musical Stage.......2002-10-09

I was one of the fortunate ones who saw a concert preformance of SHINE which is where I got the album. What a delight...What a sparkling dislpay of humor, strength, and tenderness in the lyrics...and what a releif to know that there are still composers out there waiting to add to the American treasury of musical theatre. It is difficult to single out one or two songs because they are so beautifully intigrated into the plot." Yes" is a showstoppers in any book!!! And the snide bitchery of"A Hard Working Boy" is worth a reprise. You'll love the innocence of the 1876 tale that is oh so familiar but told with such insight, warmth and just plain old fashioned showmanship...a welcome sound in todays musical theatre.

    5 out of 5 stars A Homerun.......2002-09-25

I came across this by accident, because of the reference to Horatio Alger, and I loved it. Apparently it has not had a lot of exposure on the stage, but I can't wait to see a production.
It's my current "drive-time, feel good" CD. There are also a couple of great ballads, particularly, "Maybe Today."
    Listen to it.

4 out of 5 stars Music and Lyrics.......2002-09-23

I had never heard of this musical, but someone told me about it and I've listened to it several times, in my car. It's got melodies and clever lyrics, and I particularly liked the title song and someting called "Look How Far We've Come" and a simple ballad called "Maybe Today". The cast is remarkably good, and I hope I get to see this one on a stage some day -- hopefully with this cast!

    5 out of 5 stars A delightful surprise........2002-09-18

This is a cd of a reading of musical that's not yet been seen onstage - and after listening to it, I can't wait for it to be mounted fully. A melodic score with lyrics that have wit and wisdom, performed by a topnotch cast of Bway and off/Bway performers like Carole Shelley, Brooks Ashmanskas and Andrea Burns plus a newcomer named Jeremiah Miller, is a total delight.
The title song and something called "Yes!" are both starmakers for Miller. And there is so much more. Treat yourself to an old fashioned musical comedy score, rare these days as fine vintage wine. If this show ever gets to Broadway, they'll have to polish up a few Tonys.

I stumbled upon Pat Alger while trying to find out who had recorded a song I heard on the radio - "Unanswered Prayers." Found out that not only had Garth Brooks had a hit with it, but the songwriter himself, Mr. Alger, had recorded it on this remarkably good CD, "Seeds". Then I realized that many of the songs on this album were later recorded by both Brooks and Kathy Mattea, and Lo and behold, Brooks, Mattea and Trisha Yearwood are on the album doing backup vocals. The collection is quite good. "Seeds," "A Few Good Things Remain," "Unanswered Prayers" and "The Thunder Rolls" are the highlights. The instrumentation is as tasteful as the vocals, and Alger's folk/country phrasings are a delight to listen to. I don't know why he stopped recording, but this is a "find" in a sea of country quicksand!

Pat Alger co-writes with Garth Brooks and other country-pop stars, but he's a balladeer at heart. If you like singer-songwriters with melody, humor and heart, you'll LOVE this album. I have given it as a gift to family and friends and it ALWAYS gets outstanding reviews (even from my die-hard classic-loving family)!

          Product Description

Typhanie Monique and Neal Alger have been performing their brand of soul-infused jazz for over six years now. Spawned from a weekly residency at Chicagos famed jazz venue Pops for Champagne, the duo has carefully honed their groove-oriented versions of jazz standards, pop/rock songs, and material from the R&B/Soul genre. While some of the duos music has emerged spontaneously, as in the original composition I Dont Care, tunes like Wonderful have relied more on craftsmanship and subtle reworkings. Whether the song is old or new, played off-the-cuff or tightly arranged, however, all of them contain a strong undercurrent of groove and soul which gives Typhanie and Neals duo a distinctive musical personality within the jazz world. Intrinsic, their first release, has enjoyed airplay in every major city and music critics have unanimously given it high ratings. In support of Intrinsic, Typhanie and Neal have performed in New York City, San Francisco, Denver, Minneapolis, Cleveland, Detroit, and many other cities throughout the country. Armed with a varied repertoire and a stage persona that exudes intimacy, the duo appeals to long-time jazz lovers as well as younger audiences that enjoy the contemporary material. Indeed, the vibrant music created by the duo on their brand new 2nd release In This Room will persuade you to occupy their unique space and feel welcome.
