Faudel is one of rai's brightest stars, but in this first CD, he only partially succeeds; a partial success from Faudel however is probably better than the best from many singers. He has an excellent voice, and in these songs sounds youthful and sweet, and not what one usually associates with rai music. He tends to sing in a higher register than he does in his subsequent albums, and his voice does not have the colorations and mature musicality that it has on his 2nd effort, "Samra".

Favorite tracks: "Omri": A flamenco flavored number with terrific guitar work.
"Abadou": Faudel sings in a throatier voice on this track and sounds great, and the song has the feel of a more traditional Arabic melody.
"N'Sel Fik": Here Faudel is joined by Samira Cherraj for a rousing version of the song made a hit by the duo of Fadela and Sahraoui; this track is terrific and "real rai", with no "pop" sugarcoating.
Faudel fans will also like his hit "Tellement n'Brick", which is given a second "hip hop" version on track 12, and the title song is given an "oriental" version on track 13.
If you're looking for an authentic sounding rai CD, you will only like "N'Sel Fik", if you're a devoted Faudel fan, you'll enjoy it.
Sung in a mix of Arabic and French, the sound is good, and total time is 57'58.

Absolutely groundbreaking.......2003-09-16

Baida is excellent album from Faudel that spotlights this young singer's exceptional talent. The CD is fused with Arabic rhythms, North African beats, French lyrics, R&B, pop, and a host of other musical stylings. This has got to be one of the best CDs that represent rai music.

"Anti" opens the album with an upbeat tempo and is followed by the uplifting "Eray." "Tellement n'Brick" is Faudel's breakthrough French single that best highlights his talent. "Dis-moi" is a political outpouring expressing the frustrations of the beur generation in France. "Omri" is yet another great song with Spanish influence sung entirely in Arabic. "La valse" is not a high-point and "Baida" is another generally good song. "Miskin" is an up-tempo song that is almost reminiscent of Culture Club beat fused with Indian rhythms. "Abadou" is a slow yet soothing piece and "N'Sel Fik" is a fast beat duo with a girl. "Ma vie" is yet another take on frustrations of the beurs. The remix for "Tellement n'Brick" was really unnecessary and very inferior to the original track. Yet the remix for Baida is better orchestrated on the final track remix.

The fusion of the all the different sounds is very innovative and it is what makes the opus truly groundbreaking. This is a must have for anyone who needs a little flavor in his music collection.

never felt music so close to heavens.......2003-02-06

Our western aproach to music is very different than eastern ways, sometimes even when you are not understanding a damn thing what singers are saying, you can feel that they are so close to true emotions and that they are really bare souls searching for non-terrestrial comunication.
Fortunately once Khaled passes away, we'll have another "chosen one" among us, and it's this boy.
The first time I listened to the tittle song, I felt so vulnerable that I was even ashamed of myself.
Buy this cd and prepare yourself for a sublime experience, half of it it's a bit edgy since he mixes hip-hop, techno-pop and other western styles with rai (now an essence within the style) but the other songs are so great that you will never regret.

Cool music.......2002-03-26

I like the music even though I don't understand the lyrics. I like Faudel's voice and the feeling he gives to the music. He is destined to be a great star. The first track, Anti, is my favorite. Faudel has a fan in Puerto Rico. Keep up the good work!

Off the wall!.......2002-01-24

Faudel's album BAIDA is fantastic! These melodies rock and are such ear-candy. Mmmm... He's so talented and the language is so beautiful. I love the tone of all his songs, how they're so catchy (granted i don't know what he's saying so it's a bit difficult to sing along). I especially love track 3 and 4, tellement n'brick and dis moi (it also helps that i understand the french songs). He sang this at the 1,2,3 soleil concert with Khaled and Rachid Taha, and they're a great trio but solo, he's really moving as well. I've sampled his newest album Samra, but i'm still an all-time supporter of Baida, which pushes me off the edge into complete euphoria.

fabulous rai !.......2002-09-17

The musicianship on this CD is sensational, and Faudel, a 25 year old French star of Algerian descent, serves up one tasty song after another in his smoky sensual voice, making this a recording that will be played for decades to come.
Though there are different styles on it, like "Salsa Rai", the nouveau flamenco flavored "Hanina", and the electronic "Rohi", it makes a good blend, and every track is great to dance to.

Faudel co-wrote 10 of the 13 songs, and on "Salsa Rai" sings with Yuri Bonaventura. Track # 7, "Je Me Souviens", is a seductive ballad that's a knock-out, and the track I'm most likely to hit the re-play button on, but there isn't a weak song on the entire CD.

The packaging also gets my highest rating. It's in the sturdy cardboard case that is being used nowdays, and that I appreciate so much (no more "teeth" breaking off from the disc grip), and this one has a double fold-out for the lyrics (in Spanish, French, and transliterated Arabic) and recording info. Total time is 55:09.
This is one of the very best recently released non-classical CDs I've heard. Exciting stuff, expertly performed and presented.

This Cd is definitely enjoyable... I love listening it to it when Im about to go out or when Im just feeling down its an awesome CD!!! Its definitely diffrent and pleasing...plus FAUDEL is soooo cute...:)

When I left Marseille in 2000, I picked up Faudel's 1998 release... and discovered a new world of sound and love of music. They try to put Faudel into a category... into a little column, but just as he did in his last release, SAMRA breaks all the chains they've placed upon him. When you listen, you'll be taken from Algiers, to Marseille, to Paris, and back down to Madrid... who knows where you'll end up.... Faudel is limitless....

Move over khaled, Mami and Taha to make room for a new generation of rai. Faudel is a young new artist whose talent is met with unprededented enthusiasm. His music depicts a variety of styles which appeals to a diversified spectrum of populations, with his soft and soulful voice moving from the Salsa rai to the balladry of Je Me Souviens to the dancefloor beats of Rohi. Faudel's music enters the heart and nourishes the soul. As I close my eyes and listen to his soft warm voice, I drift into a dreamlike state that's neverending...It's magical and Faudel's music is sensational. Samra is a must buy album. There's a beat in it for everyone.

Faudel has arrived! His second release is as good as his first (Baida) or even better! Faudel has a very passionate voice and truly sings from the heart. Track #1 Leila is destined to become a sure hit at Arabic discos and night clubs. Track #4 Salsa Rai will move you! Samra manages to combine very traditional Arabic instruments such as Kanun (by Elie Achkar one of the greatest Kanunist from Lebanon), Oriental percussions in perfect harmony with the Western Guitar, Drums and Piano! Before he was machine-gunned to death in 1995 by the Islamic Salvation Front, Algerian producer Rachid Baba Ahmed had almost single-handedly transformed traditional rai into sophisticated pan-Arabic pop music. This 1990 collection featuring some of the music's biggest names (including rai's "king," Cheb Khaled) would be the perfect introduction for anyone new to a genre whose influences include French, Bedouin, and Moroccan tinges. Rather than veiling their passion behind religious ecstasy in the manner of other Islamic styles, pop-rai singers lay their sexual interests on the line in fervent declarations that cut sharply through Rachid's artful clutter of sinuous synthesizer lines, chittering drum machines, and keyboard horn sections. I really like this cd...as I'm a big Rai fan...I collect lot of them...but this cd is so special,it's for dance or just chillin..my favourite track is cheb hamid...by the way algeria is a north african country! and it has nothing to do with da midle east...cause algerian people have their own identity and their own style of music...

Rai is undoubtably some of the most popular music from the Middle East. This Algerian version of pop-hip-hop and local folk is catchy and accessible to anyone who likes World Sound mixed with pop. I put this on and had to play it twice through. It's that good. I would recommend this for parties in summer, as the music just warms up the deck, backyard or street party and gets people moving as well as snapping their fingers. Just great, one of the best to come out of Arc Music this year.
