OUT OF STEP.......2005-01-17
Two things I particularly like about Cherkassky. One is his very attractive touch, the other is that he does his own thing in terms of what he chooses to play, whatever the trends in critical fashion. This disc preserves for us the little man's 80th birthday recital at the Carnegie Hall in 1991, and is now available as one of Decca's Gramophone Awards Collection, having won the instrumental award in 1993.
With the passing of Horowitz and Cziffra a particular kind of virtuoso tradition had almost died out. Cherkassky represented an even older element in that tradition than Horowitz did. He was a pupil of Josef Hofmann and his playing recalls Hofmann's in some ways, although he has no lack of individuality of his own. The first piece in this recital that brings out his virtuosity to the full is actually by Hofmann, and being unaware of anything else of Hofmann's creative work I can't be sure how to understand its title `Kaleidoscope' nor how to place it in any kind of context. Cherkassky treats us to some delightful scintillating fingerwork in it, showing the characteristic cool clarity of touch that is his special hallmark. In fact that is apparent in every single work on this long programme, from which a few pieces have had to be dropped as exceeding the disc-capacity, although they are to be issued on a separate record. There is a certain amount of standard fare here - a nocturne by Chopin and his tarantella, Schumann's etudes symphoniques, and I suppose we can include the Bach/Busoni chaconne under the `standard' heading. I have that in another performance by Michelangeli, not widely known for outlandish choices in his recitals, and the contrast is delightful. There is a devil-may-care bit about Cherkassky, and it is pleasant to find it surviving through the new era of perfectionist super-virtuosi that Michelangeli, Lipatti and (on some days) Richter represented. There is also a short sonata by Ives, and in a more populist vein there is a paraphrase by Paul Pabst of themes from Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin. Just in case anyone was finding the programme too uniform in style, Cherkassky ends with a boogie-woogie etude by Morton Gould.
There is a great sense of enjoyment about it all, although a fifth star in the rating would have needed a bit more evenness in the playing generally from my point of view. By that I don't mean more accuracy - wrong notes are very rare indeed, and I understand from the liner note that the allocation of time for retakes was not used and the recital as we have it here is exactly as Cherkassky gave it. The liner note itself is talkative and charming, and the recorded quality is perfectly good without being outstanding. There was room for a player like this in a generation that had decided to take a different direction.

Oh My Goodness...!!!.......2005-04-24
Heaven, music and earth meet on this album. The music is mind altering, the rhythms are other worldly and everything fits! Too often singers and their singing get in the way of the rest of the music, but on this album the balance is exemplary. Surely music such as this will and should be appreciated by people of all cultures and all times. How sad it is that this album will not get any real radio air time anywhere. Thomas is better with this ensemble of musos and nothing gets in the way. I did not once miss the electric guitars or horns. Enough is the mbira for a witness!!! I have only three words of advice for anyone who reads this. Buy! Buy! Buy!
mesmerizing and magical.......2005-03-15
Like others that wrote, I saw Thomas in concert and was surprised to find myself in the aisle dancing a few songs into the show. This album is unplugged, so instead of waking you up with the happy frenzy that I experienced at the concert, it gently eases your mind as Mapfumo plays music that rejuvenates the heart and has a timeless appeal to the soul.
"UNPLUGGED" FORMAT REDEFINED.......2005-03-02
Many CD's are just over-rehearsed, regurgitated, formulaic and frankly boring... This CD will go down in history as a very important recording. WHY, you ask? Simply put IT HAD NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE and (the tour/recording) should not have happened. BUT IT DID HAPPEN!!! DUE TO THOMAS' & HIS PROMOTER'S VISION. To hear THIS music in this unplugged format, with' Thomas' voice, the mbiras (multiple of course), drums and bass (on some songs) is simply beyond the "unplugged" format. IT REDEFINES THE "UNPLUGGED" FORMAT!!! It took me several listenings before I realized that this was a very special CD. It has been said that Mozart wrote songs in which the listener not only heard the music but was also able to see or feel the music. This recording will probably ensure that Thomas Mapfumo be remembered along with great composers of any generation/culture or genre. For those of you who are laughing at this comment, listen before you laugh...
The Sleeper
Hipnotic.......2002-11-02
I just picked this CD up during an intermission at a small club in St. Louis. Thomas Mapfumo's band was red-hot and it was a thrill to see them live. I was lucky enough to go backstage and have them each sign this CD. Afterwards, popping the disc on in my car I was at first disappointed. I wanted to hear that lilting, lyrical guitar; the wonderful female vocalist; the horns. But this is Thomas Mapfumo unplugged--two mbiras (traditional African thumb pianos) take centerstage supported only by sinewy drums and the most amazing bass guitar heard in a long time. By the second cut I was hooked. In the days since, I've found myself returning to the haunting, hypnotic sounds of the mbira. There's nothing else like it. But don't mistake LIVE AT EL REY for a chill-out album. This music cooks. And if you're like me, you'll be dancing in your car all the way to work...
Raw Energy.......2000-08-03
I was there. I was there the night this CD was recorded at the El Rey Theater in Albuquerque, New Mexico. What a night! Actually, I was in the band that opened for The Blacks Unlimited that night. The band called Animal Opera. The night was filled with raw energy that is evidenced on this recording. The producer, Manny Rettinger, worked meticulously to capture every gram of this incredible energy on this incredible night. Mapfumo's more basic band with 2 mbiras, bass, drums, and himself provided an extremely intimate structure for non-Shonas to peer into the magical art of Chimurenga music. Buy this CD and see for yourself how mesmerizing this music is and how it will carry into other times, places, attitudes, and states of mind. I must comment on the fact that this band is a great bunch of guys and I still enjoy remembering the times I got to hang-out with them. Thanks Thomas and the Blacks Unlimited.

The pianist-composer genius Dave Brubeck is no stranger to classical music, having studied with Darius Milhaud and performed and recorded with Leonard Bernstein. This concert, recorded December 23, 2000, at London's Barbican Centre, celebrates Brubeck's 80th birthday and teams him with the celebrated London Symphony Orchestra. It also reunites him on stage with his sons: pianist Darius, trombonist-bassist Chris, Matthew on cello, and Dan on drums. Rounding out the septet is the inventive flautist-alto saxophonist Bobby Militello and bassist Alec Dankworth. The strings swing sweetly on all the tracks, from the impressionistic "Summer Music" and the avant-rock "Four Score in Seven" to the hits "In Your Own Sweet Way" and the timeless Paul Desmond gem "Take Five." Brubeck's soloing reflects the kind of sparse, in-the pocket linearity that comes from knowing what not to play, which only a master like him would learn from a lifetime of great music-making. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Brubeck in a Symphonic setting.......2004-01-17
I have reviewed most all of Dave Brubeck's work since the 1950's and this is probably one of the most tame of his endeavors. I almost went to sleep. I think the general weight of having the London Symphony and also all of the family members at this 80th birthday celebration performance, gets in the way of what Brubeck does best: Straight Ahead Jazz Improvisation on piano. A far better bout in a symphonic setting was done with Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic along with the Dave Brubeck quartet in a beautiful blending written and scored by Dave Brubeck's talented Brother, Howard. Sadly, the Bernstein/Brubeck collaboration is not available on recording for some unknown reason - probably licensing permissions I would guess.
I would recommend that the listener take the money he/she would invest in this particular CD and invest it in the 'Carnegie Hall' 2 CD set for a clearer hearing of Dave Brubeck doing what he does best.
