El segundo proyecto del Salmista Fernando Diaz Jr. Con Alegría, fue grabado en el invierno del 2004. Dos de las canciones del proyecto fueron grabadas en vivo, el resto fue grabado en Studio. Éste muy anticipado proyecto fué producido por el hermano de Fernando, Francisco Diaz (Guitarras, Programación). Fernando contó una vez más con la colaboración de sus amigos Gadiel Espinoza, Rafael Espinoza y Adriana Escamilla. Quienes grabaron las voces de fondo en este proyecto. Contó también con la participación estelar de músicos distiguidos como: Isaac "Chucky" Escamilla (Teclados), Ray Murray (Batería), Tommy Brown (Bajo), Luiz Lenzi (Saxofón), Mike Thomas (Bajo), Tyler Benson (Trompeta) y su padre Fernando Diaz Sr. (Guitarra). Ésta nueva producción contiene música totalmente innovadora y cantos inspirados por el Espíritu de Dios. Cantos de victoria y celebración como: Yo No Temeré, Hay Un Gozo, Día De Jubiléo. Y alabanzas íntimas de reflexión como: A Solas Contigo y ! Fluyes En Mi. Éste proyecto está destinado a ser una bendición al mundo entero.

Great world CD for your cocktail party or Bar-B-Q!!!!.......2005-02-28

Vibrant and playful, Rebeldia Con Alegria is a compilation of songs released from 1997-2003. Amparanoia is not easy to categorize as they are one of those groups that seemlessly blend several different styles--salsa, jazz, rock, reggae, lounge, ranchera, even a touch of electronic--to create a unique, eclectic harmony. In the mid-90s Amparo Sanchez, originally from southern Spain, linked up (apparently romantically as well as musically) with Manu Chao and you can feel his influence on songs from 1997s El Poder De Machin--you can also hear the early seeds of Chao's Clandestino, listen to Buen Rollito's "Welcome to Tijuana." Amparanoia started adventurous in '97 and haven't stopped the journey. This disc is mostly upbeat but does contain a couple ballads where Amparo's voice really shines, there is also a track done with Calexico. Amparanoia are exciting and energetic and clearly not afraid to experiment--this is one group where no 2 songs sound alike. For me this is the perfect CD for a summer Bar-B-Q or a small cocktail party. If you are interested in world music at all don't balk at the price of this great compilation.

If you love Manu Chao, Pink Martini, Sidestepper or Yerba Buena you will enjoy this, I promise! If you haven't heard of any of these groups get them as well!

Just for your information, there are two ensembles participating here: The Andalusian Orchestra of Fez, Morocco, directed by Mohammed Broiel, and the Camerata Meditrranea, directed by Joel Cohen. The overall conception is the work of Joel Cohen.

This CD won the 2000 Edison Prize in the Netherlands for best early music release.

Wonderfull fusion.......2000-06-08

This is the best example of three cultures living together in armony. The toledo -Spain-, of Alfonso X el sabio -the wise- , was the perfect place for this fusion and richnest of music and art. The music take you there, with a great armony and invention, this music for virgin Maria makes the lisener even more interested, yet we could belive is a pagan music and never for the stric catolic religion. then again this music is just perfect.

Transcendent.......2000-05-17

Just to add a note to the previous reviewer's comments: the last song--"Por nos virgen madre," a solo by Anne Azema with harp--is the most beautiful song I have ever heard in my life; it brought tears to my eyes with its tender passion. Forget those classical composers with their gigantic orchestras; Anne Azema always seems to work miracles in subtlety and grace with the most minimal accompaniment. This great recording is NOT to be missed.

Alfonso's/Cohen's Cantigas.......2000-03-02

This is one of the finest performances I have heard of the Cantigas de Santa Maria. By focusing on the "loores" (every tenth cantiga, Alfonso's personal praises of the Virgin Mary) the disc takes on a very personal tone, and by the end, the listener is inside the mind of Alfonso X. The choices of instruments and when to use them (or not to use them) is extremely judicious, and the playing and singing is very fine. The pronunciation of the Galician is also excellent, and none of the songs are cut in order to shorten the performance time. Though the influence of eastern music on the Cantigas is very controversial, its deliberate use here, in the microtones and rhythmic patterns, is extremely effective and gives the whole disc an atmosphere of authenticity not many have. On top of all that, it is a very "listenable" disc (unless you absolutely can't stand these eastern influences). The juxtaposition of a song in Arabic with "A Santa Maria dadas" is shocking, but again, effective. These kinds of educated guesses are the closest we will get to hearing what the Cantigas have to tell us, and this disc seems to be not far off the mark.

This "fiesta" is in honor of the Virgin, and contains music by Roque Jacinto de Chavarria, a Brazilian Baroque composer (1688-1719), Juan de Araujo (Chavarria's teacher) and others. Don't let their unfamiliarity and the unfamiliarity of the other composers/arrangers on this CD put you off--all the music is flavorful, solid, Baroque fare, and much of it is rhythmically propulsive with an exciting Latin beat. Musicologist Bernardo Illari has put it all together to create a thrilling, vastly entertaining, and unique experience. It winds ups as a veritable pageant, beginning with a drummed entry into the cathedral, followed by the polyphonic sections alternating with purely instrumental ones and some nice monophony as well. Needless to say, Garrido leads his large instrumental and vocal forces with verve and understanding. The CD comes with a DVD including an interview with Garrido and some rehearsal footage which should have been more gripping if they were to include it at all--but why look a gift-horse in the mouth? --Robert Levine

Firstly, full agreement with the review immediately below.

The disc probably should perhaps have been entitled Chavarria - selected works, since this otherwise unknown native Bolivian composer (1688-1719) doesn't appear to ever have had a disc in his name yet dominates the tracklisting. Though one can understand Garrido wanting to celebrate an "event", a "context", rather than a single composer, along the lines that Paul McCreesh is perhaps best known for in his San Rocco, Venetian Coronation, recordings and so on. Garrido has of course done this kind of "context" disc before, as have other artists in the K617 label's Les Chemins du Baroque series.

Chavarria's boistrous Spanish settings consist of villancicos, salves, and a bullfight. They are complimented by Latin motets from Flores, Guzman, and anonymous. As usual in K617's full price releases (though not reissues) the documentation is superb - essays in French English and Spanish and original texts with French translations. Generous timing at 78'19. Plus the free DVD of course.

Vividly atmospheric "Fiesta"!.......2005-05-07

This recording aims to recapture something of the exuberance of the musical celebrations surrounding the 'Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe', in La Plata (now Sucre) in early 18th century Bolivia [complete track listing given at the end of this review]. Much of the programme focuses on works by the talented (but hitherto largely neglected) Roque Jacinto de Chavarria (1688-1719); these are complemented with pieces by his [New-World] contemporaries, some better known (such as Juan de Araujo), others not. Listeners new to this repertory may be struck by the archaic style of some pieces, though they make sense in the context of contemporary Iberian music (in particular the villancicos of Juan Frances de Iribarren [1698-1767]). Other pieces, in contrast, are more typical of the Italian Baroque style, such as Chavarria's Salve regina 'Parajillos madrugad!' [track 13].

The performances by Ensemble Elyma (supplemented with the ensemble Ars Longa de La Havane and the Cor Vivaldi, Els Petits Cantors de Catalunya) are outstanding - indeed, I believe this is one of the finest recordings of New World Baroque music currently available. Most pieces are given a suitably colouristic interpretation - voices, strings [bowed and plucked], wind instruments [loud and soft] and occasionally percussion - as it seems was most probably the case in the original performances (interested readers should consult literature by Robert Stevenson and Steven Barwick etc). The programme also includes some fascinating dance-songs taken from the manuscripts of Don Baltasar Martinez Companon (a pioneering ethnomusicologist and also Bishop of Trujillo, 1779-89), which bear the hallmarks of music which can be heard to this day in South America. Whether such pieces would have been as orchestrated as they are here is perhaps a matter for conjecture, although it is impossible not to be carried away by the brilliance of Garrido's interpretations! [The original manuscripts are accompanied by Companon's own watercolour illustrations, which depict musicians - sometimes native Indians, sometimes Creoles or Africans - in small groups, playing a mixture of Western instruments (like harp and guitar) and traditional ones such as the quijada and the cajita].

The CD also includes a free DVD with extracts from a concert of this programme, and an interview with Gabriel Garrido. Highly recommended!

Fiesta Criolla, is a true representation of a Latino-American "party" that reveals the religious spirits the Colonial period had. It truly makes you feel as you were living it.

It is a lovely musical piece, however it isn't biblically sound doctorine. I assumed it was when I purchsed. However, it is beautiful to the ear.
