Customer Reviews:
Uneven quality but great value.......2007-04-30
Despite these shortcomings, this set is still good value (at least at Amazon France's current price of 31 Euros). And it's a fine way to become acquainted with Mendelssohn's music.
A superb collection of Mendelssohn.......2007-03-24
The symphonies are well-performed. 'Reformation' is an inspired live recording. The 12 string symphonies, written in Mendelssohn's youth, are also included. The concertos are exceptional - the violin concerto is as good as you'll find anywhere. The oratorios Elijah and Paulus are included, as well as the complete chamber works and a diverse assortment of choral works. The last few discs include the Lied ohne worte, the epic organ sonatas, and excellent renditions of A Midsummer Night's Dream and Fingal's Cave. While there are a few sketchy performances in the choral and chamber works, the performances and recordings are generally very solid, and the body of work couldn't be better.

Customer Reviews:
At last! Maud Powell's musicianship available again.......2002-01-03
These three CDs were available only from the Maud Powell Foundation. I managed to get volume 3 several years ago after hearing all three discs from a library, but volume 2 has not been available. So, I've waited for volumes 1 and 2 hoping they'd come back "someday." Well, here they are, and Naxos has also released volume 3 according to their January 2 2002 newsletter.
Maud Powell (1867-1920) was in 1904 the first solo instrumentalist to record for Victor's new celebrity artist series on their Red Seal label. Their promotional materials told us to "Listen to Maud Powell's violin...if you want to find out how much can be got out of a fiddle, go--listen to--Maud Powell." They were right.
Powell's performances are the type of playing that may bring tears to your eyes, going straight to the heart and soul of the music and resonating with whatever you find inside yourself. She starts with a remarkably intense tone and naturally easy phrasing, then adds a tastefully varied vibrato and portamento (as vocally-inspired ornaments to heighten the expressivity). She varies her intonation according to the keys and the directions of the phrases, as her younger contemporary Pablo Casals did on the cello. It is extraordinary, like the best singer one can imagine but going beyond words. It is the kind of performance where it doesn't even matter what music she's playing...classical bon-bons, excerpts, folk songs, whatever. The music becomes a living thing in performances this good: breathing and moving and dancing right in front of you, and commanding your attention. It will get to you and you will feel it. What more needs to be said?
Bravo to Naxos for making these recordings available. The sound is pretty good, too, considering that the recordings were made before the availability of electric microphones. I hardly notice the background noise of the record since the performances are so directly engaging. These discs would be a "must-have" even at three or four times the price that Naxos is asking for them....

Compared to Rudolf Kempe's atmospheric Vienna EMI Lohengrin, Erich Leinsdorf's Boston version, in spite of expert orchestral playing (the first-desk soloists truly stand out) seems inert and studio bound by comparison. Sandor Kónya delivers the title role with personality and authority, but the remainder of the cast lacks the ensemble momentum that distinguishes the aforementioned Kempe recording. Leinsdorf, by the way, restores several bars of music to Lohengrin's Narrative originally cut by the composer. --Jed DistlerCustomer Reviews:
One of the best sounding Lohengrins in the catalogue........2007-07-03
Unlike my other favorite Lohengrin (Fehenberger/ Jochum), this is absolutely complete (including the Appendix to the Grail Narrative!) in amazingly real sound. When you have that long procession to the cathedral or the preludes you want great sound, and this set delivers. The voices are free and project easily through the orchestra. I don't understand why people berate Leinsdorf so much. His performances do not have the hyper energy injected artificially into them by other conductors (Solti comes to mind), true, but they unfold naturally. What a joy to hear such balanced textures throughout. And the drama is still there. Multiple hearings of this set will make you enjoy it more with every hearing. (4 stars for Gorr act three and Amara's valiant but smallish Elsa.)
A Memento of Konya.......2007-03-02
Leontyne Price was reportedly the first choice for Elsa. It would have been an interesting opportunity to hear her in a German role. There are a few glimpses of her singing in Richard Strauss excerpts in good vocal estate and they pique my interest for what she would have done in this role. (The complete Strauss Ariadne came a few years too late to showcase her great vocal gifts.) Lucine Amara is adequate but not much more. She no Janowitz, Norman, or especially, Grummer.
The rest of the cast is significantly outclassed, especially by Fischer-Dieskau and Christa Ludwig in the rival EMI/Kempe effort. Rita Gorr, an artist I admire, handles much of the role of Ortrud pretty well, but the final scene's squalling is a trial to the ears.
The Boston Symphony is tonally opulent and brings out much of the beauty of the orchestration, an accomplishment shared by Maestro Leinsdorf. The conducting isn't, however, on a par with Kempe.
This is an interesting recording for fans of Konya and the curious. Yes, it is absolutely complete with Lohengrin's uncut grail narrative, but for a reference recording, look elsewhere. My recommendation is EMI/Kempe.
A reminder of the wretched Leinsdorf, from sooneone who was there.......2005-09-05
Excellent, Excellent, Excellent!.......2005-06-06
It's Pure magic all the way through, full of beauty, fire, drama, and weight...plus you get the complete full Act 3 Grail narration!
It's like a book you can't put down because it's so good!
Just get it and you will fall in love with Lohengrin in a whole way you never new possible!
A Wonderful Introduction to a Great Opera.......2003-09-28
Recording Richard Wagner is a troublesome task. His works require such power that something in each recording seems to be missing. Sometimes it is the quality if the singing, at other times it is the orchestra or perhaps the conductor cannot hold the piece together. The Boston Symphony Orchestra's version of LOHENGRIN with Erich Leinsdorf seems to come pretty close to being perfect. The Boston Symphony Orchestra has a reputation for excellence and Leinsdorf was certainly one of its legendary conductors. He is able to use the full depth and abilities of the BSO to give this great work its due. Sandor Konya is Lohengrin. At one moment he can be a powerful heldentenor, at other moments he is able to sing with delicate grace and beauty. Lucine Amara's Elsa is sheer beauty. Jerome Hines is superb as the King. My only objection to the set is Rita Gorr's Ortrud. While she is a mezzo with great ability, and her character in this opera is supposed to be a bit shrilly, at time she is too brash and it comes across almost as screaming rather than singing. Once a person is used to her rendition of Ortrud, it becomes barely noticeable, but it dopes take some getting used to.
I have listened to other recordings of this work, as well as live broadcasts from the Met, (quite honestly it is difficult to judge the work from a Met broadcast a few years ago since the audience let its displeasure with the sets be known with a series of boos that seemed to have an effect on the music as well), yet this continues to be the recording I enjoy most. As another reviewer noted, there are cuts in this version, which was not uncommon for longer operas recorded in 1965 as this recording was, however the strengths of this recording still make it my favorite rendition of this work.

Customer Reviews:
DO NOT BUY THIS CD!!!.......2002-03-28
The problem is sound quality. These are bootleg Cds dubbed from poor quality 78 RPMS with no attempt to clean up the sound. It is muddy, scratchy, noisy and distant. Also several of the sides were transferred running off-speed!!
Happily Decca Broadway has sued to have these bogus discs taken off the market and have announced plans to issue these same titles under their own label. Decca owns the original masters so the sound will be much better. Do yourself a favour and wait a few months for the Decca releases, and avoid at all costs this an any other releases from Encore/Box-Office!!
Robin Hood Revisited.......2001-04-04
The Desert Song is one of those old-time musicals that they just don't seem to make any more...perhaps we have become too cynical, too worldly, to believe that once upon a time, people would go out by themselves, shuck off their privilaged existance, get together with a band of loyal henchmen (the Riffs in this case), and right wrongs, chastise villians, win the girl, and reveal their secret identity at the very end....and do all this set to some well-written music, including one of the great polyamorous love ballads of all time - "If One Flower Grows Alone In Your Garden".
Put some fun, adventure, and old-fashioned idealism back into your life and let yourself be recruited by the Red Shadow and his band, happily roistering in the secret cave hide-out, as they plan their next sorty against the evil-doers of a simpler - and possibly better - world.
The Merry Widow ain't half bad, either!

Barenboim Conducts A Fine Score But The Singers Are Bland.......2006-03-17
At a length of 4 hours and 30 minutes, this extensive, highly musical comic opera is considered to be Wagner's best work prior to his more mature works like Tristan And Isolde, the Ring and Parsifal. Set in Medieval Germany, the plot centers around a huge singing contest in old Nuremberg. There is hanky-panky going on between a contestant and the wife of another contestant. Whoever sings the most beautiful and meaningful song in praise of German artistry wins the hand of the fair Elsa, a role that is probably the most taxing for a lyric soprano. The wise cobbler Hans Sachs is a principal role and calls for a lyric but powerful bass voice and very few singers master this role. The bass in this opera is rather good, and sings well, but does not put any idiom or nuance to his acting. Granted, this opera is tough to put on. It does not enjoy immense popularity in major opera houses and only a few stage it. Today, you are likely to find that only Bayreuth still stages this work. Barenboim, who was Jewish by the way, remains an active and popular conductor and his talent for conducting Wagner is extraordinary. No other conductor alive today can do this.

Fantastic!.......2000-11-19
Regardless of the "problems" of a live recording, like stage noise, I belive that operas are better served in this enviroment. Recording quality, and high audio equipment, has improved to the point that is near to be there. You get the sense of the performer moving around and, thanks God, people does not cough like in the historic recordings.
Mr. Barenboim conducts in a very adequate manner this romantic opera and the performers are up to the task. The strings of the Bayreuther Festspiele are warm and the metals command perfect control.
The cast is enormous and to have a perfect sound talks marvel of this recording.
A must buy.
Excellent sound and tight, exciting conducting!.......2000-10-02
Sound quality is superb, has to be one of the best recordings from Bayreuth.
