Latin for "common era," Era Vulgaris holds a pair of common threads with the four Queens of the Stone Age records that preceded it. One, it crosses colossal guitar chords with the most volatile of hard rock melodies. And second, it's as LOUD as loud gets, thanks to Josh Homme, the impatient instigator behind the ever-evolving cast of personalities that make up the band. Detonation comes with track one, as the jagged riffs of "Turning on the Screw" lead the listener into "Sick, Sick, Sick," where Julian Casablancas spews his vocals beneath a wall of multi-guitar catcalls. Although the head Stroke will likely garner the most attention, perpetual Queener Mark Lanegan's velvety pipes earmark two of Era's most booming selections: the funky "Make It Wit Chu" (complete with Temptations-like backing vocals) and the heart-racing three minutes of "River in the Road." Add the garage rock of Homme's "3's & 7's" and "Suture Up Your Future," easy pickings for most likely crossover hit, and Era Vulgaris-- hypnotically and explosively common--holds its own with any in the QoTSA discography. --Scott Holter

5 out of 5 stars A return to form.......2007-07-16

After their last album I was't holding out much hope for this one. But turns out I was wrong - it's great! The lineup is probably more Josh Homme's Flying Circus, but that doesn't seem to matter.

4 out of 5 stars Heavy Hypnosis.......2007-07-16

This album isn't as instantly likeable as previous outings by QOTSA - even though some tracks grab you from the first play. It is only after repeated listening that some of the subtleties begin to reveal themselves and the real craft that's been put in comes to the fore.
If there's one word I'd use to describe the appeal of this band it's "energy". Even with a new band line up this is tight, heavy and above all energetic. It gets into your head and makes you move. The tone isn't exactly dark but it is brooding, atmospheric and has that hint of danger that gives the music a real edge. The singles are good and give you a flavour for the album but it's only when you hear this album as a whole and enjoy tracks like "River in the Road" and "Misfit Love" that you'll see what's going on.
I'd highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Need more time on this album .......2007-07-14

I'm still debating this album, maybe because I'm too busy? not sure. I've given it the more than three time listen, for it to stick. so far some songs are actually memorable. Sick sick sick is okay for now. Into the hollow is cool. the strongest song on here is River in the Road. it is just amazing.

Maybe I'll listen it again later and I'll love it then. This happened to me with Faith No Mores Album of the year. I wasn't thrilled with it at first then three years later became my whole soundtrack with exception to "Might Surprise your self". i may right something later on how I feel.

What I don't like is "Bulby" and I miss Natasha Schneider

4 out of 5 stars Quirky robot rock with sex thrown in .......2007-07-11

Josh has put out another good album. I like it a lot more than the last two. The first Queens was classic material. The second Queens was very good as well, but the last couple of albums wasn't my personal favorite. Yeah, yeah, I understand why the artist has to change, and develope, and grow, and progress. Yata yata yata, this album is fun but I miss what Queens sounded like when they had just arose out of Kyuss. If you don't know Kyuss then do yourself a favor and find some.

4 out of 5 stars Very creative.......2007-07-11

The most important thing to know about this album is that you won't like most of it after a couple listens. It takes time to appreciate the unique sound.

This album is different than anything I've ever heard. There does seem to be a Nine Inch Nails influence (especially on "Misfit Love"). Not surprising since QOTSA tour with NIN following Lullabies to Paralyze and Trent Reznor appears on a track that is not on the US version. The best song in my opinion is "3's and 7's" and it's probably the easiest to get in to. Very classic QOTSA rock. "I'm Desiginer" is an entertaining track with entertaining lyrics:"It's just like diamonds (pause) in s**t". Josh really seems to have fun singing this one. "Battery Acid" starts out with one of the most unpleasant chord progressions I've ever heard then suddenly morphs in to a fast paced, rockin' song.

The low-lights of the album would be the boring "Suture Up Your Future" which has a catchy bass riff, but thats about it. Then there's "Run, Pig, Run" which takes chaos to a whole new level. The whole album is chaotic but this song goes overboard. And what seems to be the case all to often in music, the album ends on a poor note with "Running Joke".

In my opinion, I think this album is better than Rated R, but it's in a dog fight with their Self Titled album and Lullabies for second among QOTSA albums. Those three are too close to call. Songs for the Deaf is in first and not even in sight. Congrats to QOTSA for keeping it fresh and not putting out the same record twice.

5 out of 5 stars Edith Piaf.......2007-02-17

What a delight to hear Edith Piaf's lovely voice! Lovely songs, and it is well done.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Second Piaf.......2005-10-01

Once she has won your heart, you will want this collection to hear how she developed as a performer -- and came to be a great symbol of France in the 20th Century

4 out of 5 stars casual music listener.......2005-09-10

Adds depth to a music collection; sound quality of old recording makes it interesting

5 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised.......2005-08-12

Having heard a song by Edith Piaf while watching the movie "Saving Private Ryan" and being captivated by the sound of her voice, I decided to venture into a completely new direction in my listening library. I must admit that I have not been able to take this CD out of any player that happens to be around me! Even though I have no idea of the lyrics, Ms. Piaf has the ability to draw you in and make you feel like you understand exactly what she is saying. She is joyful, tragic, coy, sad, dramatic, and ultimately she leaves me with the feeling of her devotion to her art and her time in history.

This CD should be required listening in school;it is the perfect marriage of technique and art.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Quality.......2006-02-25

was amazed to hear the difference in quality between this CD recording and the vynil versions, even for a Mono recording.

5 out of 5 stars No real guitar lover should be without this CD.......2005-08-26

Anyone who loves the guitar, and who enjoys discussing great players, simply must include Django Reinhardt in their library and their discussions. "Quintette du Hot Club de France: 25 Classics 1934-1940" is a great place to start. His speed, inventiveness, musicality, and emotion are unsurpassed by any other guitar player from any other genre or any other era. And on top of that, you get the added bonus of Stephane Grappelli's violin playing. Buy it, listen to it, and be amazed.

5 out of 5 stars Quintette du Hot Club de France: 25 Classics 1934-1940.......2005-08-22

If you're into Django Reinhardt and his music, this may be the single most all-inclusive CD of his works available, containing most of the tunes he became best known for performing. You probably will not need another.

The one critique I have is, that for some inexplicable reason, the version of Limehouse Blues on this CD is noisier (hissy) than another copy of the song I have, though it is note-for-note the same version and, I'm pretty sure, the same performance. All the other tunes appear to have been processed for higher quality- a minor drawback; an excellent CD.

5 out of 5 stars this is a good collection.......2005-04-27

If you're just going to buy a 1-disc Django CD, this is a pretty good one to start with. Lots of great songs on this disc. But you can spend just a little more money and get a more complete 4-disc set called "The Classic Early Recordings in Chronological Order volume 1." (I haven't listened to volume 2 yet, but I know volume 1 is good.) Anyway, it's hard to go wrong with Django Reinhardt.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A lot of fun.......2007-05-15

Songs from an almost-forgotten era of music. Lots of songs, better sound quality than I expected, and surprisingly "modern" lyrics. I'm really enjoying this CD.

3 out of 5 stars Neither as bad nor as good as it could be.......2006-12-27

Novelty songs are like fireworks, bright and nearly omnipresent for a moment, seemingly quite substantial, but quickly vanishing into an acrid vapor and dust. These 20 renditions of vaguely sexual material vary widely in quality and style, but something they share is that not one is a performance of a lasting song. A few are worthy of the repeated listen, but way, way too many wear out their welcome after one go-round. Double entendre is of limited interest to me, and so is the coy and roundabout sexual reference. Yeah yeah, I get the joke, I know what you're referring to when you say that, I just am not all that amused. Oh my, aren't you naughty!

I love the music of this era, and have many CDs that provide me with much pleasure. Helen Kane, Ruth Etting, Annette Hanshaw were excellent singers who, when provided with significant material, produced 78s that will last beyond whatever format of music reproduction comes next. But this is mostly negligible stuff, performed by minor talents. I like Sophie's song a lot, which is sung with gusto and panache. She could work a song, and on this, she does. And Gertrude Lawrence provides a momentary smile. Other well-done or clever bits appear here and there. However, like mediocre sketch comedy, most of this just goes on too long with nothing but the inherently pleasing aspect of its naughtiness sustain it. And that just ain't enough.

Oh, and the notes, while lengthy, are simultaneously ingratiatingly smug and content-free. Living Era has a number of delightful CDs on my shelves, but this one will get few spins. Should have trusted my gut instincts that were pained by that wretched pun of a title.

5 out of 5 stars What a hoot !!!.......2006-11-26

Listen To The Banned: 20 Risqué Songs Of The 20s and 30s offers quite a collection of shameless tunes from the 1920s and the 1930s. These songs were banned from being broadcast by the BBC; however in retrospect they are actually rather humorous. The playful and romantic nature of these songs also makes them timeless not simply because they are funny and amusing but also because romance and $exuality are universal human experiences.

The CD boasts many songs with great musical arrangements and strong performances. I especially like Sophie Tucker singing "He Hadn't Up Till Yesterday;" Cliff Edwards' "I'm A Bear In A Lady's Boudoir" and "I'm Going To Give It To Mary With Love" as well as Ross and Sargent performing "Nellie, The Nudi$t Queen." Excellent!

There are more daring songs on this CD that would rattle some people even today. The Durium Dance Band performs "Let's All Be Fairie$;" "I've Gone And Lost My Yo-Yo" by Billy Cotton and his band and Randolph Sutton chuckles all the way through "Or Anything Else I've Got!"

The sound reproduction from the 78s is rather good although of course there is some surface noise. Brian Rust contributes an essay in the liner notes about censorship in the 1920s and the 1930s. The cover art work design is by Phil Duffy at P. D. Graphics Ltd.

I enjoyed every minute of this CD! I recommend it for anyone who likes nostalgic pop vocals from the 1920s and the 1930s. These are not just silly songs by unknowns; in fact you will be especially pleased as Sophie Tucker, Gertrude Lawrence, Mae West and Cliff Edwards are all represented here. Get this CD and have fun listening over and over again!

5 out of 5 stars Superb Stuff.......2006-06-23

I have this on vinyl, where it is called "Listen to the Banned", and it is a superb collection of risque songs that are genuinely funny. I especially like the two Ukelele Ike Edwards tunes ("I'm a Bear in a Lady's Budoir" is great) and George Formby is very funny with his "Little Ukelele in His Hand", done before he cleaned himself up and got merely cute. There are two cuts that go beyond funny into the realm of the sublime. "I've Gone and Lost My Little Yo-Yo" by Billy Cotton and His Band is funny, coarse and sophisticated all at the same time. However, the really incredible, and fabulously politically incorrect highlight of the set is "Let's All Be Fairies" by the Durium Dance Band. People of all sexual proclivities will find it beyond hilarious. This is a wonderful collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2005-01-16

If you like comedy, sex and jazz (and who doesn't?) this is a must-have album.

Gertrude Lawrence's rendition of "The Physician" is worth the cost of the disc, but "Nellie tne Nudist Queen" is also brilliant.

That the most famous garage-rock record of all time, the Kingsmen's "Louie Louie," is buried on the last CD of this four-disc box is very much in keeping with the spirit of the (often) one-hit wonders that people Nuggets. Here, "Louie Louie" is just another great song. An elaboration on the 1972 double LP, which is included in its original sequence, this set piles on dozens more great moments of inspiration, guts, chutzpah, and sometimes sheer commercial calculation. How else to explain the advice "Look at yourself" from the likes of the Strawberry Alarm Clock, whose idea of mind expansion seems limited to putting together two very vaguely related nouns--"Incense and Peppermints"--so their swinging Farfisa-led track will have something, anything, for verbal content? There's loads of such wisdom on display here, prefab and otherwise, usually delivered as rabidly as possible. (Try the Remains' "Don't Look Back," Mouse and the Traps' "Maid of Sugar--Maid of Spice," or the Music Machine's "Talk Talk," which was actually a hit.) And remember: "The sky is falling / The ocean is calling / The world ... is spinning 'round ... and 'round." For sure. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Suburban and purely American and great music!!!.......2007-07-03

This is a fantastic collection. Precisely what rock'n'roll was meant to be in the 1960's: Raw,snotty,youthful-and not necessarilly "great artistic" music or "classic rock", whatever the hell that garbage is, like it degenerated into after the Sargent Pepper album came out and ruined everything about real '60's rock'n'roll. While many of these bands were indeed influenced by The Stones (not to mention The Yardbirds,Kinks, etc.), it is completely unfair to compare them to British bands, since they had an attitude and sound that was distinctively American and all their own. Sure, many of these bands were one hit wonders or no hit wonders, but so what? Most of this is great music.
And in response to some reviews saying how this can't compare to The Rolling Stones, etc., in my humble opinion, most of this is far better. Anyway, I've always thought The Stones were one of the most overrated bands of all time. Real rock'n'roll isn't supposed to be great art nor take itself all that seriously, which is exactly what happened after the overrated Sargent Pepper album came out,and in my opinion the ridiculousness of Hendrix, Jim Morrisen, etc. (Don't get me wrong, these guys were talented-just took themselves too seriously).
Anyway, I suggest buying this collection if you like raw, unpolished, sixties punk. And I also recommend the "Back From The Grave" compilations.

4 out of 5 stars Un fourre-tout de bon stock........2007-05-30

5 out of 5 stars Song upon song of rock n roll glory!.......2007-05-22

Better than just about any album I can think of, Nuggets embodies the spirit of rock and roll, captures that elusive musical zeitgeist and pins it down for all to behold and admire. The songs found on these four discs are loud, fun, catchy, colorful, occasionally beautiful and often mind-altering. Bridging the gap between pop, r&b, psychedelia, proto-punk, folk-rock, surf, and dance-craze insanity, these songs exemplify the anarchic, bouncing off the walls, let's-bash-this-sucker-out-and-have-more-fun-than-anyone-has-ever-had-before philosophy of rock and roll, assaulting (and delighting) listeners with blasts of youthful agression, boundless energy, and unfettered enthusiasm. From start to finish, its an awesome experience, and one that every self-respecting rock fan should experience at least once in his or her life- preferably once a day.

The box set's first disc (which recreates, track for track, the original Nuggets album, as compiled in 1972 by Lenny Kaye and Jac Holzman) alone is one of the greatest rock albums ever. It features absolute classics such as the Electric Prunes' "I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night)," a psych-pop call to arms whose reverbing guitars and aching vocals will resonate accross the ages, as well as the Standells' "Dirty Water," a slinking garage-rock foot stomper with a great sing-along vocal and a nasty guitar line. Orther garage-rockers include the Seeds' "Pushin' Too Hard," which boasts a wonderfully weird two-chord guitar riff and a snarling lead vocal, as well as the Count Five's ludicrously catchy Yardbirds ripoff "Psychotic Reaction" and the 13th Floor Elevators' certifiably insane "You're Gonna Miss Me." Which is to say nothing of The Chocolate Watchband's "Let's Talk About Girls," which manages to out-sneer the 'Stones, and the Amboy Dukes' cover of "Baby Please Don't Go," an absolutely hyperactive proto-metal jam-out/guitar assault. And then there are the pop classics: In "Sugar and Spice," the Cryan Shames create one of the most irrisistable love songs ever, outfitting a wonderfully dopey main melody with some playful guitars and a rhythm that will never leave your head. Ever. "Night Time" and "My World Fell Down" (by the Strangeloves and Sagittarius, respectively) make use of layer upon layer of instrumentation to create dizzying little constructions of pure radio gold, while the Castaways' "Liar Liar" does an excellent job of being as weird as it is catchy. Just listen to those vocals! Other excercizes in sheer awesomness include the Remains' "Don't Look Back," one of the many tracks on this set that can be described as "driving, emotional, and utterly cathartic." And then there are the Premiers, whose "Farmer John" matches its sheer sing-along-till-your-lungs-fall-out catchiness with wonderfully mind-numbing stupidity. The Magic Mushrooms' "It's-A-Happening" is pure googly-eyed psychedlia, and our lives are all the better for it.

The next three discs, graciously compiled by the good (very, very, good) folks over at Rhino Records, expand on Kaye and Holzman's compilation, serving up 91 more littel-known gems from the mid 60s. They, of course, rule, and it would be just about impossible to go through all the highlights here, but there are a few that just beg to be raved about: The Litter's "Action Woman" is a pounding, vicious, roaring fuzz rocker, and the Sparkles' "No Friend of Mine" is every bit as ticked off and maniacle. The Chocolate Watchband's "Are You Gonna Be There (At the Love In)" is a tough-as-nails blues pounder with a wonderfully sarcastic lead vocal and some mean guitar outbursts. The Brigands' "Would I Still Be Her Big Man" is a tense, moody stunner, with some fantastically emotional vocals. The Broques "I Ain't No Miracle Worker" is... remember how I said that a lot of the songs on this set can be described as "driving, emotional, and utterly cathartic?" Here's one of those songs. Needless to say, it's mind-bogglingly good. Ditto the Dovers' haunting, gorgeous "What Am I Gonna Do" and the Lemon Drops' dreamy "I Live in the Springtime." And if you liked "Farmer John," just wait until you hear "Double Shot (Of My Baby's Love)," one of the most heroically stupid frat-rock songs ever recorded. The Elastik Band's "Spazz," meanwhile, is utterly insane. By the way, I haven't even come close to summing up all the styles and sounds on this set. There are still all those great folk-rockers ("Little Black Egg," "Laugh Laugh"), psychedelic head-trips ("Last Time Around," "Voices Green and Purple"), earth-melting guitar storms ("Blackout of Gretely," "At the River's Edge"), and "Louie Louie," which really is its own genre. The point is, these songs are incredible. Incredible! Vital, even. Listen to 'em once, and they'll become a part of your life forever. And trust me, they make for great friends.

Plus, the set comes with an eye-wateringly good bocklet that features great essays, pictures, and band bios (including commentary on all 118 tracks!) Basically, this is a gift to any fan of rock and roll, an utterly listenable musical classic that belongs in every CD case and pair of ears on earth. Absolutely, positively, 100% essential. You need this more than oxygen.

This four cd set has a great deal of yesteryear music from 1965/68. As I was there at the time, to go back to this music that has value and meaning, understanding how this type of music developed. This is a "got to have" for your collection. Even this summer there is a Hippie Fest concert tour, helping bring back this era to a new generations. L$$

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to the talent of Les Paul.......2003-03-20

Les Paul is one of the greatest musicians to ever record music, plus he did invent the solid-body electric guitar, a guitar genius, and this CD from the fine folks of ASV in England serves up 30 gems from 1937-1951 in great sound featuring stuff from his jazz trio that recorded on Decca, the early hits with Mary Ford (the rest are available on the Best of The Capitol Masters CD, a track with the Andrews Sisters included entitled "Rumors Are Flying" and a version of "It's Been a Long, Long Time," with Bing Crosby singing and Les playing the guitar. The version of the Frankie Yankovic hit "Just Because" that features Les not only playing guitar, but also singing and playing the harmonica he recorded for Montgomery Ward as "Rhubarb Red" is worth the price of this CD alone. The production on many of Les's recordings is way ahead of its time as he did multi-tracking the guitar before anyone else did, plus he influenced the late, great, Chet Atkins and recorded two albums with Chet on RCA: Chester and Lester and Guitar Monsters, which One Way has issued as a twofer that is available right here at Amazon.com. This is an essential CD for all guitar music fans and Les Paul fans. This CD is not all you need to know about Les Paul's genius and talent but it serves up a perfect introduction to his talent.

5 out of 5 stars Ferguson Returns.......2007-06-01

This album reminds me of the live performances I attended when I was in college a long time ago. It was great to relive these experiences. The Kenton orchestra tracks were particularly good. I thought I had lost the "Hot Canary", since I had it originally on 78. Nothing plays them anymore. I recommend this trip down memory lane.Wow! The Formative Years

5 out of 5 stars Awesome collection!.......2007-05-13

I've been collecting MF recordings for about 35 years... and this really is a great compilation of the Best of Maynard's Early Years. This is the stuff that won him Downbeat Awards and made him a "name" performer while still in his 20's.

The CD is well recorded, there's nothing glaringly bad as far as levels/mixing go. For vintage recordings (late 40's and 50's) these are well recorded and hold up well both from a technical and musical standpoint.

I had all but one of these tunes in my collection... but it's nice to have them all in one place on CD instead of hunting through all my old vinyl!

If you're a MF fan - or a trumpet player who wants to hear what the fuss is all about - come hear The World's Greatest Trumpet Man as he was at the beginning of his career!

5 out of 5 stars wow the formative years by Maynard Ferguson.......2007-03-31

Definitive early recordings of "The Boss". Well recorded and packaged. Good addition to your Maynard collection.

5 out of 5 stars Essential.......2007-03-15

This is an essential CD for Maynard Ferguson enthusiasts who do not own many examples of his work from the late 40s and early 50s or have not heard many of these early cuts. His remarkable youthful precision will be especially revelatory for those who are primarily familiar with Ferguson from his final years touring as an elder statesman with Big Bop Nouveau. While the disk is inexpensive, the sound quality is good to excellent, with the understandable exception of the first two radio transcription cuts.

Ferguson moved to the United States in 1949 and initially played with the bands of Boyd Raeburn, Jimmy Dorsey and Charlie Barnet - just as the age of the big band was passing. While there are no studio recordings from his tenure with Raeburn or Dorsey, this CD contains a couple of tracks from a live radio broadcast with Dorsey in New York during March of 1949.

The third track is Ferguson's notorious feature with the Charlie Barnet band on "All the Things You Are". This disjoint and decidedly unsentimental recording enraged Jerome Kern's widow, leading to a lawsuit threat that resulted in the record being withdrawn from sale by Capitol Records. For those that have grown used to Ferguson's flamboyant style, it does not seem as extreme as it may have in the fall of 1949, although it is still quite a hoot to listen to.

Ferguson was destined to play with Stan Kenton and the only impediment was that Kenton had temporarily disbanded when Ferguson made his move to the U.S. Ferguson finally joined Kenton when he formed the Innovations Orchestra in 1950 and Kenton featured Ferguson prominently on a number of recordings (most already out on CD). This CD contains three tracks with Kenton, the eponymously named "Maynard Ferguson" (with the Innovations Orchestra) and two cuts with the "regular" Kenton band, "Hot Canary" and "What's New". There are four cuts from 1950 recorded with Ferguson listed as leader of an orchestra comprised of Kenton sidemen - and given the quality, apparently dubbed from vinyl. There are also two cuts from 1952: an odd small-group date with Ben Webster and an orchestra cut featuring his first wife, Kay Brown, on vocals.

Ferguson left Kenton in 1953 to become a studio player for Paramount Pictures. While his contract limited his live performance opportunities, he still recorded quite regularly as a leader and sideman. The middle of this CD includes seven tracks from 1954-1956. There are a number of CDs available with additional material from this period.

The CD concludes, appropriately, with five tracks from the Birdland Dreamband, which Ferguson was tapped to lead in 1956 when he left Paramount. This aggregation would form Ferguson's core performing unit until the mid 60s, when he left the inhospitable musical climes of America for Europe and India. While the mature Ferguson would occasionally pull out charts from his early years, his second career would be based on more rock-influenced charts and a more fluid playing style to match.

It is nice to see Ferguson's early- and mid-career work finally coming out on CD, ironically just as the CD is heading into technological obsolescence. Nevertheless, even for those who have moved into the iPod age, the price is right and the screaming is timeless. Wow, indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Still unbelievable.......2007-02-28

Oh, my...even after hearing the incomparable Maynard Ferguson on dozens of recordings over the years, the sheer virtuosity of his playing continues to astound me. I know that most, if not all, of the sides on this LP have already been available on CD - and the quality of some of the recordings is subpar. But the gifts that Maynard possessed, even as a very young man, were nothing short of otherworldly, and this collection showcases the early years nicely. If for nothing else but Maynard's remarkable "All the Things You Are", his restrained and lovely take on "Over the Rainbow", and, of course, "Maynard Ferguson", this disc is absolutely essential for any MF fan. Buy it now.

Guns N' Roses' career could be neatly summed up in a lyric from their song "Pretty Tied Up": "I just found a million dollars that someone else forgot." Indeed, GNR satisfied a grassroots public hunger for bigger-than-life hard rock at a time when legions of alternative bands were enjoying their first burst of overweening critical attention and commercial cachet. The last and most spectacularly successful band to prosper from Hollywood's burgeoning 1980s Sunset Strip glam-metal scene wrapped a couple decade's worth of sometimes tired clichés around a tight, assaultive musical attack that enticed millions yearning for poor role models. And if their edgy songs often blurred fantasy and reality, the best of them had a street-level honesty that couldn't be denied. A de facto greatest-hits collection culled from performances recorded around the world, Live Era best documents the early, ferocious performing prime of GNR's original quintet on its first disc, leaning heavily on their landmark Appetite for Destruction album to great effect. But the second volume often chronicles the band's steady decline into bloated self-parody and neo-Vegas "professionalism." This band needs a horn section like Slash needs another drink! --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Great Live Album for a misunderstood band....(4.5 Stars).......2006-08-03

I wasn't old enough to go see GnR when they were together, but after listening to this album numerous times, I really wish I had got to see them. The energy level at their shows was legendary and this is evident in these songs even thought they are taken from a period of 7 years. Surprisingly, the musicianship is much better than I thought it would. Slash's style and speed was fantastic and these guys were not just straight guitar rockers. They had a full-blown production in their later years with piano, horns and backup singers. I particularly liked the jammed out version of Knockin On Heaven's Door.

It's funny to think all the five GnR heavy hitters (Sweet Child of Mine, Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City, November Rain, and Don't You Cry Tonight) are all slowly making their way into classic rock rotations and there is probably a decent amount of younger people out there that haven't hear much of them. This double CD showcases some of their other great songs like KHD, Patience, My Michelle, and Nightrain.

I had some great live bootlegs from a Japanese concert that have been floating around the internet for years. The sound quality and is bit better then those but nothing to really write home about.

Bottom Line: For the casual fan the only GnR album you really need.

4 out of 5 stars A LIVE CLASSIC!!.......2006-06-12

This album, with all its mystery (recorded all over the universe-when? where? what line up? ) came well after the fact and first off serves to remind us that this was (is?) one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Every song is top shelf and even as a two disc live set, leaves many of the classic tracks off, in itself a testament to the quality of the material this band produced.

As a live album it serves well the legacy of their performances that were always memorable if not classic.

All in all, an incredible album and a must for any rock fans collection

5 out of 5 stars Great GNR Live Set.......2006-06-10

In their lifespan of jsut over seven years, Guns N' Roses managed to become one of the best bands ever. With their 1987 debut "Appetite For Destruction", they managed to create one of the greatest albums ever made. Their two follow ups, 1988's "Lies" and their 1991 double cd "Use Your Illusion I" and "Use Your Illusion II" were solid efforts as well. However, by 1993, due msotly to the behavior of their increasingly self destructive lead singer Axl Rose, Guns N' Roses called it quits. However, their fans still remember them and even today they are still acquiring new fans.

Anyone who lived with Guns N' Roses at their peak (unfortunately, I was two and a half when they split) knwos that they were one of, if not the, best live acts around. They always put on an amazing, energetic show and all their fans left happy.

This two disc set, "Live Era: '87 - '93" captures Guns N' Roses live throughout their seven year run. You get heart pouding, blood pumping live versions of their biggest hits, including "Welcome To The Jungle", "Sweet Child O' Mine", "November Rain" and "Paradise City". You also get to hear some of their lesser known material such as "Yesterdays", "Rocket Queen", "Used To Love Her", "Estranged" and "Patience".

For the most part, all of the performances are solid and energetic. If you are a big Guns N' Roses fan, then I think you'd be very happy with this album.

4 out of 5 stars Not Perfect, But Best Yet.......2006-05-11

Well. It's hard to believe that it's already been more than 7 years since I bought this CD in 1999. Since then, it was always one of my favorite live performance CD so far. Probably it's because there are undeniable reasons in spite of a couple of weak points.

As the title of this CD [Live Era 87-93], it was only 7 years in the history that GN'R showed us their performance. Those days was one of the most exciting years ; thrilling, powerful, and exciting rock band ruled the world, not only US but also Europe, Asia, South America.. all over the world. I don't remember when it was the last time that we has a band like them; maybe only few exception is just U2 & Metallica. But one thing is sure - since the 90's there wasn't much time that we had such a real fun as we watched GN'R. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Green Day, Oasis, Blur, Radiohead, RATM... OK, they are all pretty good bands. But I always looked for GN'R's CD when I'm tired of their music. Why? Because I felt I need something more rocking and it was GN'R. And this CD has what I need; it was Rock And Roll.

First off, this CD has pretty decent sellection even though I wish there were a couple of songs I like personally. I can't complain too much. But one song, 'Coma' only in Japanese edition is a real hidden gem. Don't miss it.

Sencondly, one weak point is too varied. Maybe this is a inevitable choice between a live CD which is selected from 1 or 2 good concert, or compilation of various performances. AXL chose the second one just like the title from their early days in 1987 to the last good days with original members SLASH & DUFF in 1993. And it made this CD set weak in the matter of concentration. Honestly, I prefer the first choice as a Fan, their legendary lives like Ritz in 1988, Monsters Of Rock 1988, or Rio in 1991. So I wish AXL release one more complete concert as DVD or CD sets. (I know there's not much chance for that, except bootlegs.) And I think it'd be better if there's some simple comments for each tracks like "Date/Place/Members".

In conclusion, this CD set is not perfectly satisfactory to me due to the standard of making, but I had no doubt about the quality itself.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet!!!.......2006-04-23

This is one kickass live compilation. Most of the greats by the bad boys from LA are here LIVE! GN'R is one of the best live bands and with this you don't have to worry about if Axl shows up or not. The only song that I miss is "Civil War" if that would have been included it would have been perfect. Also the locations and dates for every performance would have been nice but what you gonna do eh?

Warren Griffin was due some sort of notoriety ever since he introduced best friend Snoop to half-brother Dre, and thus set the stage for one of the more noteworthy musical collaborations in recent years. But who imagined he had it in him to match the smooth gangster ride of those g-funk all stars with lyrics and tracks of his own? Falling somewhere between Long Beach comrades Domino and Snoop on the pop-R&B-rap continuum, Warren is at his best when his catchy soul melodies get equal time with his rhymes to create a radio friendly groove that's virtually unshakable once planted in your head. While not every song is as memorable, Regulate boasts at least two hip-hop classics: The shuffle beat bliss "This Is the Shack," and the title cut, featuring Michael McDonald's icy keyboard lick and partner Nate Dogg's gorgeous singing, destined to be the standout single of the year. With an excessively tuneful, but not excessively violent or vulgur, debut, Warren G.'s future lies way beyond the shadow of his better known associates. --Roni Sarig

5 out of 5 stars Believe it or not.........2007-06-07

Believe it not I worked on the Regulate album. I was a production assistant at Track Record back then, so I was there.

Write boy from New Hampshire goes to LA...ends up on Warren G sessions. Who would have thought? Apparently, this album is #1 for many rap and hip hop fans. I never listened to it except for hearing Regulate on the radio when in stores. I've never actually listened to any rap or hip hop...so, it's kinda funny that I was on the Warren G sessions.

Just wanted to share the story...lots more inside stories of those sessions, but I'll probably never tell them.

4 out of 5 stars Welcome to The G Funk Era.......2007-02-07

Warren Griffin was one of many rappers coming out from the West Coast with the breezy G Funk Sound in the early 90's. What differs him from others was that he's actually the half brother of master producer Dr. Dre and he's an hell of a producer aswell. This album is his career highlight, unfortunately the only really good album he made. It got great laid back G-Funk sound, good lyrics that differ from the average Gangsta Rap album at the time. And a few standout songs in the hits "Regulate" with Nate Dogg which samples a Michel McDonald song, "This Dj" and first single "Do You See" is also worthwile. However, it's a very short running time (most songs are about 3 minutes) and among the 12 songs, two are actually skits and shouldn't be counted. Just like his bro, he isn't among the best Mc's, rather a great producer!. Thus, you'll find many guest atists included. Nate Dogg, Snoop Dogg and female rapper Jah Skills on "Super Soul Sis", all others are not known at all. "Recognize", "What's Next" and especially the brilliant "And Ya Don't Stop" are all worthwile non singles. "Regulate...G Funk Era" is a great album that was perfect for it's time with great production and some fantastic tracks and one of 1994's greatest Hip Hop albums. Both "Regulate" and "This Dj" were top 10 hits and the sound of the whole album is above the rest of it's time. It isn't quite a classic though, but more then great album and worth your time.

4 out of 5 stars This D.J. Be Warren G (Rating: 9 out of 10- -4.5 stars).......2007-01-25

There is not much to add to the reviews here about this album. In 1994, Warren G. busted on the scene with his debut "Regulate...G Funk Era", with the lead single "Regulate" with Nate Dogg. From what I understood that single was on Def Jam Records, but Warren left before the album was done. Also it was on Death Row Records, possibly because Nate Dogg was on there, so you know Suge Knight had to be a factor on that single. But the album itself was issued on Violator Records (they've been around that long??) and Rush Associated Label.

When it comes to West Coast debuts, I put this album up there with "The Chronic" and "Doggystlye". People doubted Warren, but this album proved them wrong. A lot of his production is laid back. Kind of makes me wish I was crusing through Long Beach in the summer...it has that feel towards it. I say the best produced song on here would be "So Many Ways" (one of the songs that gives you the feeling I described). In my opinion, "And Ya Don't Stop" ranks in second.

Lyrically, Warren was good. He wasn't great like many popular artists back in 1994, but he could hold his own. And when his lyrics were lacking, his production filled that void. There are some songs here where he lets his guests take care some of the vocals. "Super Soul Sis", Jah Skillz (who I recognize from that Ras Kass album) lays down some of the smooth vocals. On "Recognize" The Twinz (Waniac and Trip Locc) take care of most of that song. Heck, even The Dove Shack makes a catchy song on "This Is The Shack".

In '94, Warren dropped one remerable album. To me, it just falls short of a classic, but it is still one of the best to come out of the West Coast. And especially in that year when the East Coast were running things and dropping mad albums, people just sort of forgotten how talented the West was at that time. Being a HUGE fan of West Coast rap/hip-hop, I for one am glad that I have this album here. I still believe Warren is underrated (and I believe his recent "In The Mid-Nite Hour" was dope and slept on), but I recommend that you listen to this album. 12 tracks deep, there are barely any skippable tracks on here.

The wholesome folk movement of the late 1950s--an era where every frat member worth his letterman's sweater strummed an acoustic guitar--was led in part by Washington State's the Brothers Four. The group boasted a similar repertoire to the better known Kingston Trio but outdid them on at least one count: they had an extra member. They also had some truly great hits, including "Greenfields," "Yellow Bird," and "Green Leaves of Summer." On this best-of compilation, the Brothers play some of their most enduring songs (yes, decades later, they're still touring with these legendary tunes). On "Lemon Tree," they show their balladic skills; on "If I Had a Hammer," they unleash their spirited side. On standards such as "Michael, Row the Boat Ashore," "Tom Dooley," "This Land Is Your Land," and "Where Have All the Flowers Gone," the Brothers Four don't pull any punches in their delivery; their singing is a clarion call to restful youth. For a more rambunctious look at the quartet, check out their live Tokyo Tapes double-CD, where medleys and even a few solos will have your toes tapping. Gold, indeed. --Jason Verlinde

A wonderful CD. I'm replacing most of my old LP's. Amazon is the best place in the world to find stuff. The Brothers Four make beautiful music with terrific harmony.

5 out of 5 stars Great in an awkward decade.......2006-05-08

This is an album comprising mostly re-recordings of The Brothers Four's hits from the 1960's. According to Bob Haworth (please see his message board on his website for this and more about the album), they recorded it in the late 1970's - so the line-up consisted of Dick Foley, John Paine, Bob Flick and Bob Haworth. In any case, the arrangements on most songs appear to be new, and the overall sound is deeper, richer and mellower than with the original line-up. The emphasis shifts from rhythm to melody, the instruments are handled a bit differently, and the vocals are less wild.

There are treasures here which only come to those who wait. One is Marianne - the lyrics are, of course, absolutely silly to begin with, but what they do with them this time around is amazing. Not to forget that the original members are about 15 years older than when they first recorded this song, and so the asides are more seasoned, and in some ways more humorous. The sound design is fantastic, vividly evoking the glimmering seashore and the surreal people who choose to spend their entire lives in such a place. Another is Tom Dooley: a performance with a lot of texture; nay, culture (if you appreciate early Louis Armstrong, Django Reinhardt or Carlos Gardel recordings, you'll know what I mean by "culture"). If I Had a Hammer and Michael, Row the Boat Ashore sound stronger and more focused than the originals, and Both Sides Now and Lemon Tree hold some delightful surprises of their own. The John B. Sails sounds to me like a nocturnal voyage under a starry sky, reminds me of Paul Klee's Sindbad the Sailor - another reviewer likened the whole album to one of Van Gogh's "starry night" paintings.

So if you're wondering how time affected both perception and interpretation in The Brothers Four, this album will have much to yield.

A quick afterthought: I recently noticed that some people think of The Brothers Four as a cover band. Such people will find this CD irritating, not least because they "cover" themselves (i.e. Greenfields and Green Leaves of Summer). But those who know that being original in music implies much more than just inventing the lyrics and the chord progressions will be fascinated by what they have accomplished on this album and elsewhere. Besides, these gentlemen have written their own songs, nice ones too.

5 out of 5 stars Easy listening sixties folk quartet.......2003-02-22

These ex-university students were part of the early sixties folk revival, although according the liner notes, they were still performing in 1996 when this collection was compiled, but the line-up had changed somewhat by then. Their one big song was Green fields, an American number two pop hit, which opens this set.

Many of the other songs here are covers, including Walk right in (a 1920's ragtime song which they would have covered after hearing the Rooftop singers), Lemon tree (Peter Paul and Mary), The John B sails (better known as Sloop John B, the title used by the Beach boys), Michael row the boat ashore (Highwaymen), Blowing in the wind, Don't think twice its alright (both Bob Dylan), Tom Dooley (Kingston Trio), This land is your land (Woody Guthrie), Both sides now (written by Joni Mitchell and popularised by Judy Collins), Green green (New Christy Minstrels), Where have all the flowers gone (Pete Seeger) and Lady Greensleeves (a traditional song allegedly written by King Henry VIII around 1580). Another Pete Seeger song here, If I had a hammer, became a hit for both Peter Paul and Mary and Trini Lopez.

The line-up when these tracks were recorded consisted of Bob Flick (upright bass), Mike Kirkland (guitar, banjo), John Paine (guitar) and Richard Foley (guitar). All four sang vocals.

Anybody interested in the early sixties folk revival will enjoy this album, even if many of the songs are familiar.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2001-07-17

It's the best Brothers Four compilation, both in repertoire and in quality sound.

5 out of 5 stars Still the Best!.......2000-05-28

The Brothers Four were my favorite folk group of the 1960s. I have several records and tapes of their original music but this CD is better, if that's at all possible, than the originals. The sound is so deep it almost shocks you back into the '60s. The first song on the CD, Greenfields, is the one most often associated with this fantastic group, and it's done so well it stops you in your tracks. Shenandoah, Green Leaves of Summer, Scotch and Soda, Where Have All the Flowers Gone, and Lady Greensleeves are so mellow and smooth - completely familiar in every way. I don't remember them singing San Francisco Bay Blues (I have that song by Peter, Paul, and Mary and love it, but back then songs were often recorded by several different artists). The Brothers Four rendition of San Francisco Bay Blues is now one of my favorite songs. A wonderful wonderful CD. I loved their music on my scratchy little record player of 35 years ago but I love it more on a high-quality sound system of today. If you were once a Brothers Four fan and wonder where they are today - they can be found in this CD - and you'll feel young again, too!
