Sincere but not too sincere, cute but not gorgeous, and smart enough to know to steal from the very best, former skateboard pro Matt Costa signed to surfer Jack Johnson's label on the strengths of some very workman-like pop songs and a smooth, appealing voice. Goldilockses of the world are bound to find Costa's unassuming songs just right--and if his work fails to find its way onto the soundtracks of all the hottest television shows, there is little justice in the world. Costa may croon that "These are the songs that I sing/To make the day better," but these really aren't songs so much as they're rock & roll equations. The dude combines the anglophilic sonority of Belle & Sebastian and Donovan with a taste of Elliott Smith's gorgeous downer vibe, heaping doses of the Beatles thrown in throughout. It's pleasantly chiming enough stuff to be sure: it'll just be far more interesting to see what happens once Costa has worked his way through his influences. --Mike McGonigalCustomer Reviews:

Nikka Costa's fiercely bootylicious first single, "Like a Feather"--that song with the thick, clapped 16th notes--has already garnered the 28-year-old singer one hell of a buzz, and for the most part, she's got the goods to back it up. Already a platinum-selling artist in Europe and South America, the Tokyo-born, L.A.-bred singer's stateside debut bulges with ambition. It's a mixed bag of musical tricks that's equal parts '70s-style funk, hazy Led Zeppelin-inspired psychedelia, and angst-ridden alternachick yowling, with healthy dollops of soul, hip-hop, and thrash thrown in for good measure. Produced by Costa, Australian rocker Justin Stanley (who's also the singer's husband), and high-profile New York City DJ Mark Ronson, the album works best when it piles on the noise--like on the standout "Tug of War," which features the unmistakable rim-shot work of Roots drummer ?uestlove. On that track, a flurry of scratched samples, layers of soundboard-smeared noise, and a few luscious string sweeps break into gospel-choir harmonies that swirl gorgeously beneath Costa's reedy mezzo-soprano wails. It's a shame that she can't match this intensity on sparser down-tempo ballads like "Nothing" and "Just Because," where she sounds like Fiona Apple's slightly less annoying older sis. As the album's title says, everybody got their something, and Costa sounds best when she sticks to hers. --Sylvia W. ChanCustomer Reviews:
Costa Has Got That Something.......2007-02-10
She reaches deep into her soul for real interpretations of R&B, blues and gospel, with a variety of mixes in the production. Though I am not a fan of layered vocals, Costa is able to do an admirable job because of her range of expressions in delivering the parts.
She sings it like she's lived it in Push & Pull and Corners Of My Mind, with Tug Of War and the title track compelling enough to make you stop what you're doing and listen intently.
A dynamite CD likes this one means that the artist has refined the material over a period of years and may struggle to reach the same peak or is starting one of those magical runs of quality releases. Costa has set a solid foundation and Everybody Got Their Something will stand on its own no matter what the future brings.

The artists gathered together here hail from nations and cultures noted for the growing and export of coffee. As with this CD's companion release, Music from the Tea Lands, one senses the possibility of lucrative product tie-ins, but part of the proceeds from the album are earmarked for charity and any catchy idea that gets the music out there is a good thing. Like the luscious drink itself, the tunes come in many intensities and flavors, ranging from a light-as-air ditty from Peru, to the more complex vocal stylings of Colombia's Claudia Gomez, to Ricardo Lemvo and Makina Loca's earthy Afro-Cuban Congolese rumba. The album is a lively and fascinating travelogue, making landfall in Cuba, Kenya, Brazil, Uganda, Mexico, Zimbabwe, Costa Rica, Hawaii, and Peru. As with many other Putumayo projects, aside from its musical pleasures, this set would make an entertaining and educational experience for younger family members. --Christina RodenCustomer Reviews:

Somewhere on a soulful musical timeline between Sly Stone and Joss Stone, you'll find Nikka Costa. While many find chart success by putting out palpable but forgettable pop/soul mixes, with "can'tneverdidnothin'" Costa has once again written and recorded a funk/soul/rock mix that rises her above the plethora of pseudo-soul. Coming from a family tree with deep musical roots (her father Don was a well-respected producer/arranger who worked with Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr.), Nikka Costa began her recording career at the age of eight, where she scored a European hit with her cover of "Out Here On My Own" from the movie Fame. For the next 20 years, Costa put out a handful of releases she herself has downplayed as inferior before coming into her first considered `real' solo effort, the impressive, soul-filled Everybody Got Their Something. For her new release, the funk and rock has been turned up considerably; Costa's shining moments of uptempo strength come via the funk-heavy tracks, most notably during the cover of Tina Turner's "Funkier Than A Mosquito's Tweeter", with its spectacular horn section. The CD's other highlights come in the ballads, most specifically the disc's two closers, the tender "Hey Love" and the raw emotion of "Fatherless Child" about the passing of her legendary dad. "can'tneverdidnothin'" is a disc that is rare in it's authentic, sincere groove, and it seems likely that as Costa continues to grow, so will the depth of her music. --Denise SheppardCustomer Reviews:
Amazing........2007-05-13
Nikka is amazing!.......2006-08-11
Her talent extends beyond her amazing singing. She writes great lyrics and helps produce the recordings. She has FANTASTIC musicians on this record. If you haven't heard Nikka before, I envy you for the discovery you're about to make. Nikka rocks!
I want to thank the other people here who wrote reviews of this record for turning me on to Nikka! I wouldn't have taken a chance on this record without all of your high praise.
Wow. Nikka Who? Jeez - Where have I been?.......2006-07-14
After gorging on free music during my very own High Fidelity period (circa 1991 - 1998), I purged myself of most of my CD collection and swore off buying any new albums over the intervening years. I discovered that even a few hundred CD's are a pain in the butt to pack and move, and - crazy - the damn things are EXPENSIVE. I won't listen to the tripe played on the radio, and other than the odd gift of an album here and there, I never really thought I'd get back into music.
And then my girlfriend goes and gives me an iPod for Christmas. Man. That quick, and I was addicted again. Thought I'd kicked the habit. Guess not - Since the end of December I've crammed that little gizmo with about 2500 songs.
So - to Nikka Costa's can'tneverdidnothin' (and I might as well include her first CD, Everybody Got Their Something, too, since this has become more of a recommendation than a review). On impulse, after reading the rave reviews posted here, I bought both discs. Can't really explain why - I rarely believe the hype about anything. And besides, the cover of Costa's first CD (where she's in a skimpy skirt, posing, swishing her butt and her swinging her head around) was just waaay to Britney Spears for me, and the cover of can'tneverdidnothin', with her wind-blown hair, wasn't any better. The thing has freakin' butterflies on it. Butterflies! Oh, Man. Seeing these CD's on a rack in a record store would not have led me to impulse buys.
But I listened to y'all; listened to a couple of the posted samples, and took a chance. Let me say, I don't quite get the Joss Stone comparisons that are flying around. I know, I know - they're both young white girls belting out what is traditionally black music, but that's as far as any similarities go. Their style's and chosen music genres are completely different. Stone is oriented in more traditional soul and R&B reworked for the teen set; where as Costa is the wild child -- a '70's blend funk and rock; some crazy mix of the Mary Jane Girls and Janis Joplin, sprinkled around the edges with some AC/DC. If I had to compare the two, I'd say that Joss Stone's voice is the purer instrument - I'd much rather sit down and listen to her stand there and sing, boring stage presence and all, but her good-girl image just ain't my style. It's Costa's balls-out funkalicious grooves that get me going.
It's something like taking the sweet homecoming queen to the prom, and then secretly getting seduced by her crazy, hot older sister after the party.
If you've been hemming and hawing about ordering this album, trust us. Really - would we lie to you? Go on, buy the disc. You know you want to. All I can say is that I'm jealous of those of you who've seen Costa live, and thank God for my iPod. Now I don't have to choose between discs - I can combine both of Costa's albums and plug the 'Pod into my car stereo, roll down the windows and do the white-boy headbob while I groove all over town.
Wiped me out.......2006-05-21
I had to wait a full year because this CD drained me in more ways than one (see my review of Nikka's first for a better explanation). Suffice it to say, and I mean this in the best way possible, Nikka Costa's music leaves the listener with control issues. I think I probably lost 10 pounds in the first two weeks of it's release, from shaking my big white fanny so furiously (and constantly!). I plateaued after that, but over the course of one year, I am approximately 21 pounds lighter - coincidence? I think not. This is perfect work-out music, whether you are into jazzercise-type routines (like me) or if you simply want something funky-fresh for your morning jogs. And speaking of funky, just wait til your friends and family get a whiff of your bathroom (or undies) after a marathon listening session. Me, I don't have any immediate family, so it wasn't a problem (plus I don't mind stewing in my own stench for extended periods of time due to moderate-to-severe sinus issues, which are surely a pain but somewhat alleviated by aroma therapy).
Everything about this release is rump-shakingly good.
Can'tneverdidnothin' - 4.5 stars.......2006-03-06
I love artists like Nikka because they don't bend to the "do whatever is hot right now" philosophy of music much like two other true original musical "she-roes" of mine - Nina Simone & Teena Marie. Nikka's music cannot be classified as just this or that - she mixes rock, r&b, pop & the blues so very successfully that people who appreciate the music don't really need to classify it. As I read over some reviews, I realized that it is truly a shame that artists like this woman get passed over for grammy nods while garbage gets multi-nominations - not talking about Mariah, whose music I love but definitely Gwen Stefani, whose sampled re-tread "music" is a joke to me.
I wouldn't compare Nikka to Joss Stone but to the equally magnificent, Alana Davis - another musician/songwriter who fiercely stays true to herself musically and whose music is also undefinable but EXCELLENT!
I loved this entire disc but the standout tracks to me are the beyond funky: TILL I GET TO YOU & FOOLED YA BABY; HAPPY IN THE MORNING, AROUND THE WORLD, ON & ON - very Prince-esque; FUNKIER THAN A MOSQUITO'S TWEETER; FATHERLESS CHILD & SUGAR IN MY BOWL.
If you are a fan of strong ORIGINAL singers, get this disc - you won't be disappointed!!

Stunz & Farah "Heat of the Sun" CD.......2007-03-22
One of Their Best.......2005-12-22
Since that time, I have enjoyed many other Strunz and Farah recordings and have yet to hear a bad one.
Their earliest work while they were still in the process of establishing their style is sometimes repetitious and somewhat mediocre, but most of what I've heard is in the four to five star category, so the problem becomes trying to sort out the best from the rest. And since there is a superficial sameness to a lot of their music, albeit on a very high plane, the sorting becomes difficult.
Though I have not heard everything the duo has recorded, I've heard most of it. When Heat of the Sun was initially issued, availability was spotty perhaps because it was issued on a small independent label. I bought it on sight and when I put it in the CD player, it blew me away. Sometimes Strunz and Farah just play, and play very well, but on Heat of the Sun they play with a rare gusto that suggests syncronicity with their muse.
I like the entire CD a lot and it stands tall after ten years as one of the best of its genre. My favorites are the sprightly Jardin, the smouldering Dark Fire, the virtuoso title cut, the languid Recuerdo, the mellow La Tinaja, and what I consider the CD's best song, the dreamy soundscape that is Terremoto.
Its difficult to keep up with all the great music that comes out year after year, and especially difficult to keep up with a group as prolific as Strunz and Farah. So if you have just a couple of Strunz and Farah recordings in your collection, one of them should be Heat of the Sun, because it is definitely one of their best. I most highly recommend it.

This is my first Strunz & Farah CD. I rate "Heat of the Sun" very highly indeed. Max. stars. Program content is excellent. plenty of variety from fast gorgeous numbers to slow sexy ones. The mix from the other instrumentalists adds real musical value to the total package. Well done! The sound quality of this CD is excellent as well.
All tracks in this CD are 5-star material, but my favorites got to be; Dark Fire; Jardin; and Recuerdo.
Great CD. Highly recommended.

Not much of a Disney Princess CD!.......2006-05-04
Only "Kiss the Girl" "Reflection" and "Once Upon a Dream" are favorites. It was so strange that "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" which was from "The Lion King" was in this album. This was not from a Disney Princess Movie! And why the song from "Aladdin & the King of Thieves" can be recorded in a Disney Princess album?
I love Disney Princess very much, and I love listening to the wonderful and sweet voices of the Princesses, for example, Ariel, Belle and Pocahontas, even Mulan. Well, where are the songs of the Princesses? And I don't like the songs from "Cinderella-2: Dreams Come True", I think they wouldn't be so terrible if there were no classic Princess songs as reference substance!
This album is really unworthy. It was neither fit for adults nor children, even a Disney fan won't love this. This album might make Disney fans and your kid disappointed, even angry. We want to listen to REAL Disney Princess songs! What we want is not this confusing album. I hope that there won't be any Disney Favoties albums like this. It's really disappointing. I have to say this even though it's not nice: If you buy this, you might be taken in by this. Save your money to buy other better off Disney albums!
The Real Reason to Get This CD.......2005-12-31
The CD begins with "I Won't Say (I'm in Love)" by Meg(ara) from Disney's "Hercules." This is one of my favorite Disney movies and this is an excellent track. Meg tries to deny her feelings for Hercules, before finally sort of admitting that she is in love.
Next is "Belle" from "Beauty and the Beast." A wonderful tune of dreams and romance that was nominated for an Academy Award.
Who doesn't enjoy "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" Featuring funny bits by Timon and Pumbaa, excellent harmonies and singing by both Simba and Nala.
"If I Can't Love Her" is from the stage show of "Beauty and the Beast." It's my least favorite track on the CD, but it's still fairly decent and interesting to hear for those who haven't seen this stage show.
"Reflection" is from "Mulan" and I consider it to be possibly be the best track from that movie. Is Mulan is a Disney princess? Well, you can debate that all you want --- I suppose at this point, she's royalty, so I guess she counts.
"Out of Thin Air" is my favorite song "Aladdin and the King of Thieves." Aladdin and Jasmine sing about what it would be like for Aladdin to finally find his father. Jasmine tells Aladdin that he doesn't just come out of thin air. The music on this recalls "A Whole New World" for me.
"Kiss the Girl" is from "The Little Mermaid." It's not my favorite song from that movie --- I would have preferred "Part of Your World." But it'll do all right. And it can't be said that Ariel isn't a Disney princess --- after all, she does marry Prince Eric.
"Once Upon a Dream" is a classic! It's from "Sleeping Beauty." Sure, the little kiddies today may not entirely appreciate this, but I think it's wonderful that they would include a classic like this.
Now, part of the reason for this CD's release was to have a place for the music from the Disney "Cindrella" sequel "Cindrella II." Yes, this is a direct-to-DVD release, but it's a good one. This CD is the only place to find these excellent songs, all performed by Brooke Allison. They also all (except the last one) follow a theme of "being yourself:"
"Follow Your Heart" is about a time when Cinderella was assigned to the preparations for the royal ball. She was given all sorts of instructions, such as not opening the curtains and not inviting commoners in. Finally, she decided to just do things her own way. A lively, upbeat, positive theme.
"The World Is Looking Up To" is about the mouse Jaq and when he decides to become human. Another fun track about being yourself.
"It's What's Inside That Counts" comes from when Cinderella's stepsister Anastasia fell in love. She thought she'd get all dolled up, but learned that she can be loved just for being her.
Finally, "Put It Together" is a wonderfully fun techno remix of the classic "Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo." I was surprised this works, but it does, splendidly.
So if you're looking for a Disney CD with great music and are willing to look past any preconceived ideas, then snap this CD up.
Another Repackaging Of Princess Favorites.......2004-04-21
Thank you very much for your time
Whose Princess Favorites???.......2003-10-15
My daughter is a huge Disney Princess fan, and wants to hear the songs from the Princess movies non-stop. She's only 3, but she does know her princesses, and the girl from Hercules and Nala from the Lion King are definitely NOT princesses! This is also the first time that I've seen Mulan grouped with the princesses.
We wanted music from the classic Disney Princess movies that she loves - Cinderella, Snow White, Beauty & The Beast, Sleeping Beauty, Aladdin and The Little Mermaid. I do not put Cinderella 2 and Aladdin and the Forty Thieves in that category - were those even released in the theaters, or direct to video?
I am generally a fan of the Disney compilations, but this one feels like a marketing rip-off. Get the Disney Classics 5 CD set if you really want the Princess Favorites - they may be spread out over all the discs, but they are the songs you want to hear!
Save your money!.......2002-04-30
There is no Ariel...just a song by Sebastian. No Cinderella, no Snow White, and why would they place an unknown song from the Broadway musical Beauty and the Beast which only has been heard by the people attending the musical?? At least Sleeping Beauty made the grade. My daughter has the movie Cinderella II which the CD promotes, but is not familiar with them to really enjoy these 4 songs.
Again, save your money...some day maybe Disney will set aside some of their money and marketing hunger and put out a CD that any 5 year old princess will enjoy singing along with...BTW isn't Beauty and the Beast being re-released...oh yea, thats why that endless song about Belle is on there..Bon Jour!
