Taj Mahal's been chasing the blues around the world for years, but rarely with the passion, energy, and clarity he brought to his first three albums. Taj Mahal, The Natch'l Blues and The Real Thing are the sound of the artist, who was born in 1942, defining himself and his music. On his self-titled 1967 debut, he not only honors the sound of the Delta masters with his driving National steel guitar and hard vocal shout, but ladles in elements of rock and country with the help of guitarists Ry Cooder and the late Jessie Ed Davis. This approach is reinforced and broadened by The Natch'l Blues. What's most striking is Mahal's way of making even the oldest themes sound as if they're part of a new era. Not just through the vigor of his playing--relentlessly propulsive, yet stripped down compared with the six-string ornamentations of the original masters of country blues--but through his singing, which possesses a knowing insouciance distinct to post-Woodstock counterculture hipsters. It's the voice of an informed young man who knows he's offering something deep to an equally hip and receptive audience.Soon, Mahal turned his multicultural vision of the blues even further outward. The live 1971 set, The Real Thing, finds him still carrying the Mississippi torch, while adding overt elements of jazz and Afro-Caribbean music to its flame. But it's overreaching. His band sounds under-rehearsed, and the arrangements seem more like rough outlines. Nonetheless, these albums set the stage for Mahal's career. (For a condensed version, try the fine The Best of Taj Mahal.) Today, he continues to make fine fusion albums, like 1999's Kulanjan, with Malian kora master Toumani Diabate, and less exciting but still eclectic recordings with his Phantom Blues Band. --Ted Drozdowski

The Best of Taj Mahal.......2007-01-04
Another song that's worthy of mention is "Frankie & Albert," about a woman who shoots her cheating man. I don't know about you, but I find that role reversal pretty refreshing, considering the million versions of "Hey Joe" that have been done.
If you are new to Taj, I would recommend you start with this one rather than The Essential Taj Mahal; if you like what you hear, then later you can get either The Essential Taj Mahal or In Progress & In Motion (a great 3-CD compilation). In Progress & In Motion has Taj's awesome version of the Mississippi John Hurt song "Stagger Lee" (also reworked into a reggae song by the Clash for London Calling), yet another song that is sadly missing from The Essential. Both of these multi-CD compilations do a much better job than The Best Of at covering Taj's later period. He was making good music all the way into the 90's, including some very cool Hawaiian-flavored blues stuff; but The Best Of does not include anything past 1974.
Bottom line: Start here, but *don't* stop here.
An essential element of any blues collection.......2006-12-13
Great Place to Get a Taste.......2004-05-22
What A Find!.......2004-02-18
Aside from the songs on this collection that really cook, there are others that seem to transcend the blues and create a different feeling. "Corinna", "Take A Giant Step" and "Johnny Too Bad" are more thoughtful and laid back, making for a good mix of tempos'. Then, just when I thought it couldn't get much better, I listened to the jazzed up, instrumental "Ain't Gwine To Whistle Dixie (No Mo')". Awesome! Then there's "Oh Susanna", a song that you might think you've heard before as a child, but not like this! I could go on, but just know that all in all this is a collection of incredible, inspired music from a great artist, and track for track, it's one of the best albums I have ever purchased.
What a phenominal way to be introduced to Taj.......2003-09-25
My wife isn't much of a blues fan, but she loves this album.

More serious fans will of course want "The Definitive Leadbelly" from the Catfish label, or the multi-volume "Leadbelly Legacy" series from Smithsonian/Folkways, but this is a terrific starting point for the curious. Huddie Ledbetter, who usually performed solo accompanied only by his own twelve-string guitar, was the first black musician to gain recognition amongst the white audiences of the 20s and 30s, and this is essential early American blues and folk music.

Truckin' through the Seventies.......2006-06-21
Kaukonen had spent his high school years in Washington, DC, where he and his best friend, Jack Casady, would haunt local blues, folk and jazz clubs. Jorma ended up in Frisco as a charter member of the Airplane and, when the band fired its original bassist, he sent for his old pal to come west.
Though the J&J twosome found immense success with this most adventurous of rock bands, they never lost their love for the rootsy music they had discovered together as teenagers. As Jefferson Airplane took off for higher heights, they began working occasionally on the side as a duo playing the acoustic blues of The Rev. Gary Davis, Jelly Roll Morton and Robert Johnson.
Their first album, recorded live at a club in Berkeley, California, came out in the spring of 1970. That first release was a stripped down affair, spotlighting Kaukonen's virtuosic acoustic finger picking and Casady's inventive contrapuntal electric bass playing. As the Airplane disbanded, Hot Tuna became more than an extracurricular hobby, expanding into a full-bore rock band with a following of its own.
The newly compiled Keep on Truckin' covers the history of Hot Tuna's various incarnations in the `70s. From ample samplings of the band's original acoustic orientation through its evolution to blistering blues rock, this collection resurrects one of the great offshoots of the classic rock era, a band that may never have been able to escape the shadow of its principals' past, but one unquestionably deserving a re-evaluation. --Jim Newsom

Album Description
This special 2-CD collection salutes one of the most legendary figures in all of rock n' roll, beloved Grateful Dead lead guitarist, vocalist and eternal good will ambassador Jerry Garcia. Outsie the realm of the Grateful Dead, Jerry pursued a broad array of folk, bluegrass, blues, and roots rock side projects throughout his storied career. His solo albums capture the heart & soul as well as the rich talents of this incomparable music icon. Disc 1 - studio tracks, Disc 2 - live tracks.Customer Reviews:
schmokin'.......2007-01-12
BUT-- cd one changes musically thereafter. Hence the four star rating. Sure, Chuck Berry's "Let It Rock" smokes and every version of "Russian Lullaby" by Jerry has always sounded good, but "Might As Well," "Mission in the Rain" and "I'll take a Melody," (each from the mid 70s "Reflections" cd) depict Jerry striving for a hit single -- something that evaded him in the G/D format throughout the 70s and 80s. Of the last 6 songs on cd one, only one or two are clearly not attempted hit singles ("Knockin' on Heaven's Door" at 7+ minutes with its reggae beat is a highlight and not a potential "hit"). Garcia's third through fifth solo cds were after a hit single, something that he did not appear to be pursuing prior. Thus, here the "studio" cd changes direction mid stream and may not satisfy that "urge to jam out" itch.
CD # 2, the Live cd, is much more consistent and probably the better of the two. The first three songs (one from from Old & In the Way in '73) are very bluegrass; The Beatles' Dear Prudence, at 11+ minutes is a huge highlight with its ska-like beat punctuated by trombone and sax; and Jimmy Cliff's "The Harder they Come" and Dylan's "Senor" are both great.
My copy came with two bonus cds. One is an interview disc with snippets from the first Garcia album and as is the case with every interview cd I've heard before, completely useless. The second bonus cd contains three live tracks and is sub-titled "The tunes that wouldn't fit on the other cds." Of these three live tracks, "That's What Love Will Make You Do" (from 1975) at 11+ minutes is great. This should have appeared on the first cd over some of the less fulfilling studio material, even at the cost of ruining the "Studio/Live" separation of the two basic cds. Robbie Robertson's "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" from 1977 is slow, competent, and very, very uninspired (oh look, Jerry's playing with Keith and Donna on this one - say no more!). An acoustic version of Dire Wolf from '84 depicts Jerry's voice in poor shape indeed and at 3+ minutes is uninteresting.
All in all the bonus discs aren't too important if your copy comes sans them. It's cool how this two disc set begins with the studio version of "Deal" and ends on disc 2 with a live "Deal" from 1980 at 9+ minutes. A good purchase, but not great.
Greatest Hits? Like Trying to Hit a Moving Target.......2006-11-29
The layout itself is quite intelligent, dedicating one disk to the studio recordings, while dedicating the second to live highlights. The "Garcia" album does have five representative tracks, including the magnificent "Deal," "Bird Song," and "Sugaree," but overlooks "To Lay Me Down" and the totally weird spacey psychedelia of "Late for Supper/Spidergawd/Eep Hour." Meanwhile the thoroughly unremarkable "...Roses" album is represented three times. Garcia's take on "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" is an aural sedative, and "Without Love" is a decidedly non-climactic ending to an otherwise satisfying disk.
Fortunately, the live disk compensates nicely. Here, the combination of cover songs and originals compliments Garcia's abilities, and the track selections are more...umm, selective. "Dear Prudence" totally reinvents the Beatles song, and while it may not be an improvement, it at least shows Garcia's penchant for inhabiting his material. "Senor" is a much more inspired song selection than "...Heaven's Door" (as is "Positively 4th Street," marking three Dylan tunes on Garcia's compilation), while "The Harder They Come" is a tried and true take on the reggae classic. Plus, it's always great to hear something from Garcia's traditional folk outfit, Old and In the Way. A better, or more honest, album title for this collection would be "A Brief Synopsis of Garcia's Solo Work." It is a great place to start if you are wondering which part of his career to investigate; either that, or you could pick up his first solo album and take it from there. B+ Tom Ryan
Almost Perfect .......2006-09-27
CD 2, the live material, is "better than good." Of the three acoustic tracks that begin CD 2, I like the first track, Catfish John, because it really does capture that "high lonesome sound" a-la Bill Monroe. The Positively 4th Street is very good. The reggae tune The Harder They Come is excellent, mostly because of the bass, they really thump that bass like a fine dub tune. Gamorrah is a very good live version, though I think I prefer the studio version on Cats Under the Stars. Dear Prudence is EXCELLENT. Senor (Tales of Yankee Power) is fantastic, although you probably already have that track on those "Jerry Garcia Band" CDs. The inclusion of Evengeline is unfortunate, in my opinion. So many better tracks than that could have been chosen. The final track, Deal, is very good...it has a sort of mellowness to it that is nice, rather than the harder, rock-out Deals we're used to.
So I would give the whole package 5 stars. Try using CD 1 in your car, it seems to work well that way for me.

Another day, another Lightnin' Hopkins collection. It's only to be expected for a musician whose career lasted six decades, and whose recorded output was so profuse (often for several labels simultaneously) that the neophyte is hard pressed to determine which of the many albums, compilations, and box sets to acquire. One could do worse than this collection from Rhino Records, which includes classics such as "Coffee Blues" and "Mojo Hand," and even includes a few songs that aren't to be found on Mojo Hand: The Lightnin' Hopkins Anthology, generally considered the ideal collection for the beginning Hopkins aficionado. While hard-core fans probably have all these songs somewhere in their extensive collections, this CD is ideal for those seeking an introduction to the seminal bluesman. After all, he did help develop Texas blues, played a hand in developing the blues from rural to urban art form, and rode the 1960s folk-blues revival to one of the longest careers in blues history. Covering the 20 years of Hopkins's career between 1941 and 1961, the collection also provides a brief history of the development of the blues over the same period. --Genevieve WilliamsCustomer Reviews:
The art of Lightnin' Hopkins.......2007-05-19
A handful of examples of his work on this CD:
"Baby please don't go." The cut features simple and spare guitar work by Hopkins. The liner notes comment that (page 12): "They say he only knew three chords on the guitar. I say that made him greater. . . .I saw how he turned technical limitations to aesthetic advantage." He repeats the title line several times to set a tone and atmosphere and implores her not to go to New Orleans. Hopkins plays alone, with no backing instruments.
"Mighty Crazy", too, features no backing musicians. He surely displays a "lived in" voice. He begins the song, as with "Baby please don't go" with a repeat of the title four times.
Finally, "Mojo Hand," one of his better known works. This cut features a nice rhythm section backing him (musicians' names not known). This has some of the best recording quality on the CD. He shows animated singing and spare but effective guitar work.
The liner notes summarize Hopkins' place in the blues world (pages 11-12): "Lightnin' Sam Hopkins was one of the towering geniuses of American music. At a time when big-city blues was electrifying the world, Lightnin' brought us back to the basics. He infused his country sensibility and singular personality into every song he sang." This represents a nice introduction to the work of one of the finest blues players.
The blues do not get any bluer than this................2006-08-17
Sam "Lightning" Hopkins learned the blues, at least in part, from Blind Lemon Jefferson, and for a time even became his guide. Let the music on this CD be your guide to Texas/folk blues. Surely there can be no better guide for an introduction into this genre.
A definite 5 star pick, especially for all that Rhino has managed to pack on here for the inexpensive price. A must have.
One thing to note however: If you believe from the outset that you will come to love Hopkins' music, Rhino's release of "Mojo Hand" is recommended; it is a 2-CD set of Hopkins career. Either way, you will not go wrong.

A hidden gem.......2003-11-19
As a Steve Vai, Steve Morse ( anything guitar instrumental actually ) you can tell this is not my usual listening "fodder", but you need some light and dark in any collection, and this is a fantastic collection of songs which I put on if I am in company.
There is not a single song that you will fail to either sing along to, or be moved by. I am not a great one for listing each track and saying this is very mellow, this has a great guitar solo etc, but in this album you have it all.
I should say that Zucchero has one GREAT voice.
Out of the three hundred or so albums I have, this could well be the one album I would take with me if I was limited to just one ... that is a huge compliment to its variety and yes, I agree with the previous reviewer ...GREAT FUN
