5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite recordings ever.......2007-06-08

Elly Ameling is in glorious voice, and Demus's instrument here is fortepiano, which suits the music exquisitely. Der Hirt auf dem Felsen alone is worth the price, but all the Schubert and Schumann songs are well chosen. I'm so happy that this 1965 performance is available on CD.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful.......2007-03-21

I also owned this on vinyl and have wonderful memories of this perfect blend of voice, clarinet and piano. Truly haunting melodies and the greatest musical integrity. Can't wait to get this one next month!

5 out of 5 stars Truthful & Sincere Singing.......2006-11-25

Ameling's reading of Schumann and Schubert Lieder is sincere and noble, at times even awe-inspiring. There's always something genuinely beautiful, a sense of respect for music itself, when she sings with her etherial yet warm voice.

The sublimity of "Mein schonster Stern" only makes this CD worth purchasing. Her Schumann recordings are so scarce now that it is joy to find 19 Schumann Lieder both well known and obscure gems on this disc. Accompanied by an original master piano of Schubert's days. Recorded in 1965/67.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2006-11-11

What a gorgeous voice! It's a true delight to listen to this set.

5 out of 5 stars More than just a pretty voice ..........2006-09-17

It is tempting to dismiss Ameling as a "pretty voice" and reach for Elisabeth Schwarzkopf instead, as a previous reviewer suggests. Ameling's interpretations place a premium on simplicity and directness - two traits that are often undervalued. To my ears, however, Ameling's self-effacing approach is ideally suited to lieder performance. Schwarzkopf's recording with Edwin Fischer on EMI, while admirable in its own way, is too fussy for my tastes. Take, for example, the rendition of "Im Fruehling" by each singer: where others find Schwarzkopf to be intense and dramatic, I find her to be mannered and melodramatic. Ameling's version strikes closer to the heart and shows greater insight and intellect, in my view. Note: on this CD, Ameling's ravishing voice is at its peak.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best of the Masterworks series.......2007-07-06

Brilliant Classics' "Masterworks" series, if you can get them cheaply (and currently they go for about $1/CD from Amazon's France Web site), are a great way to amass a significant library of the works of several great computers. The production values and the performances themselves are uneven, and the interpretations are not always historically-informed (unlike the bulk of Brilliant's "Complete Editions" of the works of Bach and Mozart). But there are numerous gems in the rough in The Masterworks, and the economic value is unsurpassed, even if you were to throw away half of the CDs in each set.

You're unlikely to throw away much of this Schubert collection though. This seems to be the finest of the Masterworks sets, with a succession of solid, often first-rate performances of most of the major Schubert works. Here's what you get:

- The symphonies, performed by The Hanover Band in a historically-informed style. Very interesting performances perhaps marred by an odd recording balance that makes the woodwinds sound distant. Takes up four CDs
- The six Latin masses. Also the Deutsche Messe in the version with wind instruments. Five CDs in all
- Edison Denisov's completion of Schubert's unfinished dramatic work Lazarus (2 CDs, Helmuth Rilling's premier recording)
- The last four string quartets (including the Quartettsatz) with #9 thrown in. Also the octet, piano quintet ("The Trout"), string quintet and both piano trios. In short all the canonical chamber works. Performances are strong, and well recorded
- Two CDs of violin/piano duets, including Op. 137 and Op. 162
- 19 of the 21 "canonical" piano sonatas (missing #7 and #12) as well as the Moments Musicaux, Impromptus, German Dances, Wanderer Fantasy and several other piano works, 11 CDs in all. As with the chamber music, the performances and recordings are strong, often stunning
- Two CDs of piano duets, including the Divertissements and D. 617
- Song cycles: Die Schöne Müllerin, Winterreise, Schwanengesang, and four CDs of standalone songs, including such "standards" as Erlkönig and Gretchen am Spinnrade. The singers are a bit uneven here, ranging from standouts Robert Holl, Deitrich Fischer-Dieskau and John Shirley-Quirk to the somewhat shrill Arleen Augér

Missing from the collection is Rosamunde, and a number of famous songs: Die Forelle (The Trout), Death and the Maiden, Ellens Gesang III (the so-called Ave Maria, D. 839), Der Hirt auf dem Felsen and Der Wanderer. But you do have almost all the important instrumental works, and most of the vocal works generally considered to be essential, with some padding added in the form of minor works such as the parochial Deutsche Messe, the German Dances, and the modernist-informed completion of Lazarus by the 20th Century Russian composer Denisov.

As with the other Masterworks sets, there are no program notes. You'll need to do your own research. Answers.com is a good starting point for Schubert compositions. There are also no song texts or translations provided, so again you'll need to track down your own. Try "The Lied and Art Song Texts Page" for lieder lyrics and translations. Hunt down a good price on this collection, browsing one of Amazon's European sites if necessary, and treat yourself to many hours of lovely music for the cost of a modest night out.

1 out of 5 stars Will not buy this.......2007-03-16

I can't see D965 or D945 on this 40 disks worth of Schubert. Bizarre! There are so many great songs missing it scares me.

4 out of 5 stars Worth it!.......2006-12-19

One of the best in "The Masterpices" series. Many of the discs (the symphonies in particular) were licensed from Nimbus and other full-line labels. Not all that long ago these discs would have set you back $18 to $20 a piece. That said, I still wouldn't part with my Hyperion collection. 40 CD's at this price... you can't go wrong.

4 out of 5 stars Great way to jumpstart a schubert collection.......2006-12-19

Hartmut Holl, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Stephanie Brown, and Jaime Laredo as well as the Stuttgart Bach Collegium performing Schubert are hardly "left-behind artists and ensembles" as the previous naysayer states. These are licensed from major label releases and from the original masters issued at a bargain price, especially for the number of discs you get. Sound quality ranges from good to excellent. Good for all Schubertians and anyone who wants to jumpstart a Schubert collection.

1 out of 5 stars Better to Pick a Few First-rate Performances.......2006-11-14

This is a bargain in dollar/listening time ratio, but who cares? There are many second-rate performances by left-behind artists and ensembles. Obviously the economics of resurrecting disks that don't require royalties has been the driving factor of selection. (On the other hand, the complete edition boxed sets of Bach and Mozart, which you'll find if you look, are stupendous successes artistically.)

Felicity Lott's contribution to Hyperion's complete Schubert song edition includes wonderfully sensitive and poetic renderings of the two Suleika songs, part of a larger program that seems to be arranged around images of flowers and water. Of course, there's no shortage of either in German Romantic poetry, and Schubert never loses his ability to catch the mood of his poems with just a few bars of introductory music. Graham Johnson's accompaniments match the delicacy of much of the texts. --David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Felicity Lott sings Schubert.......2004-04-22

This CD is part of a monumental collection of the complete songs of Franz Schubert on the Hyperion label. The director of the project was Graham Johnson, the pianist on each disk. Each disk features a collection of Schubert songs performed by an outstandng contemporary singer. The listener is allowed to hear Schubert from a variety of perspectives, voices, and interpretations. The songs on this disk, number 19 in the series, are performed by soprano Felicity Lott. Ms Lott has a beautiful, light, and lyrical voice. Her performance of these songs is moving.

Johnson also wrote the extensive booklets that accompany each CD. The booklets contain treasures of information about each song, the poets, the texts and about Schubert himself. The discs are arranged loosely by subject-matter. Ms Lott's recital features songs loosely grouped around themes involving nature: nature: flowers, the stars, and water. There are 19 songs in this lovely recital in which Schubert sets a variety of poets.

This disk, and the series, are treasures for those wishing to hear and love the Schubert songs. There is both an intimacy and a sense of learning and loving music in these disks that I find rare in recorded music. The booklets are marvels of wisdom about Schubert, and those listening to the music or reading the text are addressed as "Schubertians". This is a simple, yet effective way to get listeners involved with the music and stresses that the appreciation and study of these songs can extend over a lifetime.

I will briefly take one song on this CD to illustrate what I mean. The CD opens with Schubert's "Nachtviolen", (dame violet) D.752, which Schubert set to the text of his friend, Johann Mayrhofer (1787-1836), with whom he shared quarters for a time. "Nachtviolen" is one of my favorite Schubert songs and a stunning short achievement for any composer. The program notes include, of course, the text and translation of Mayrhofer's poem. This is followed by a discussion of Mayrhofer's enigmatic text, the changes Schubert made to Mayrhofer's poem in setting it, the character of the piano and the vocal parts, and various interpretations that have been offered regarding the song over the years. Is the song simply about a violet, or does it have, in Schubert's setting, some deeper, probably sexual implication? The booklet presents a thoughtful overview to this work.

Of course, any Schubert song, including "Nachtviolen" is best approached through repeated hearings, rather than reading. Ms. Lott's singing and the collaboration with Johnson capture what, for me, is the character of repressed, hidden desire in this music.

Each of the songs on this disk receives the same careful written discussion and the same intimate performance. Many of the songs here will be familiar to those knowing Schubert's music. Other songs will be new discoveries. In addition, to "Nachtviolen", the more familiar songs in this collection included "Am See" D.746, "Auf dem Wasser Zu Zingen", D. 774, and the two "Suleika" songs, D. 720, and D.717. The texts of these songs were written by Marianne Von Willmer, a romantic interest of Goethe's during his old age. The first "Suleika" song, in particular, is a portrait of passion in music.

This disk includes an outstanding selection of songs and performances. It will help introduce the new listener to Schubert. But the disk and the series will be welcomed most by those with familarity with Schubert. Schubert's 700 some songs are among the glories of music. This is music that can be loved and understood over many years of listening to performances such as Ms. Lott and Mr. Johnson offer on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Graceful Romance.......2000-08-15

The true test that you have found a great soprano recording of Schubert is listening to 'Auf dem wasser zu singen'. Felicity Lott out shines all the competition underscored by the versatile accompanist Graham Johnson; the greatest Schubert scholar since Gerald Moore. This recording carries a maturity and elegance to the Schubert Lieder that few interpretations can offer.

Of over 600 songs, Fischer-Dieskau and Gerald Moore realized over three-quarters: these are those. Gerald Moore was of course as important to this project as Fischer-Dieskau.

5 out of 5 stars An encyclopedic collection of Schubert songs, Volume 2.......2005-10-26

Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (born 1925) is considered by many to be the foremost authority on Schubert Lieder for the male voice in our time. He likely made more recordings of this area of music than any other singer, having not only this 9 disc set, but another 9 disc set (Volume 1) for DG, the three complete song cycles: "Schwanengesang", "Die Schone Mullerin" and "Winterreise" (DG, Volume 3 of Fischer-Dieskau's Lieder edition), plus a 6 disc set of Schubert Lieder for EMI, also with Gerald Moore. Figure in the earlier recordings from the late 1940s, and live recitals on such labels as Orfeo, and there are ALOT of Fischer-Dieskau Schubert lieder recordings available.

Critics of vocal recitals and lieder may have other opinions, but I think this is as fine a collection as any. I keep this, like Volume 1, to be able to refer to a given song, not to listen to disc after disc of Schubert Lieder in one sitting, even though all are delightful works. Fischer-Dieskau manages to make Schubert's simple, strophic songs sound like great masterpieces, perhaps greater than they really are. And pianist Gerald Moore is an excellent partner: Moore and Fischer-Dieskau work as one, in perfect sync.

Keep in mind these are all songs for male voice, and not the complete Schubert songs. DG should be commended for releasing these recordings on CD and keeping them before the public. If you are really a Schubert completist, consider also the complete Hyperion Schubert Edition, with Graham Johnson, piano, and singers such as Lucia Popp, Peter Schreier, Janet Baker, Stephen Varcoe, Maragaret Price, Ian Bostridge, Martyn Hill singing all the 700+ songs Schubert composed in his short lifetime (1797-1828; Schubert's first lieder were composed about 1815). (The Hyperion Schubert edition is available in Great Britain for about $250 for 40 discs, if you cannot find it in the US).

For further comment, please see my remarks for DG, Volume 1 of Schubert Lieder by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.

5 out of 5 stars Make up your mind to this journey........2001-02-07

Since this set of Schubert lieder (3 boxes, 21 cds in all) has become a legedary classic, I don't think I should make any comment. But just a suggestion to those who want to embark on these discs. Make up your mind on this journey. On facing such a tome record arranged and sung chronically, it's useless and wrong only to listen to some famous lieder or discs or just listen randomly. You should spare a long period of time, begin by listening from the very first disc to the last disc. And, during the period do not listen to any lied of other composers. Then gradually, lied by lied, disc by disc, you will forget this is Fischer-Diskau and Moore---This is a real life of a great soul! You are really touching and breathing with a great soul! Feel the sound of schubert, feel his struggle, his emotion, his feeling, his hate and love. Feel how those youthful spontaneous and raw lieder gradually developed into fully ripened masterpieces. Such wonderful experience belongs only to really patient listeners.

It took me about 2 full weeks to listen to the whole 21 discs. Fischer-Diskau and Moore chose the "Abschied(Farewell)" to be the last lieder read (this song happened to be the only lied of Schubert to be recite with piano accompaniment, and which was composed during his final years). Thus the whole hundreds of lieder, or the whole life of Schubert, ended on this lied, farewell to the earth. It began with "Leb wohl, du schoene Erde (Goodbye, you beautiful Earth)". I will forever remember when I finally came into this lied, on the first words of Diskau's "Leb wohl, du schoene Erde" I trembled and cried from the very first note to the last note. My god, it's untouchable granduer.

5 out of 5 stars LAS ROSAS DEL JARDIN.......2000-05-03

    5 out of 5 stars The Mastersinger.......2000-06-24

If the second half of the 20th Century has musical signs, they must include that phenomenal German singer Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau who dominated the recital and concert halls, the opera stages and the recording studios in a way no other artist has done it, except maybe Leonard Bernstein. In celebration of this great artist's 75th birthday we have here a set which includes the gems of his lieder repertoire, starting with those great Schubert cycles in their most vivid performances. Just listen to those early renditions of the Schone Mullerin or with Jorg Demus, or to Schuman's Dichterliebe cycle (with the same pianist). And you shall not miss the artistry of this most sensitive voice in full volume of Mahler lieder with piano and orchestral songs. And what about the Morike lieder by Hugo Wolf? Well, you shall probably wonder at that special cooperation between the singer and the Russian pianist Svitoslav Richter. It is a performance of lifetime, and so it is with the Wintereise of Schubert with Barnboim at the piano. Those who know the artistry of Fischer-Dieskau and even those who have already other recordings of those great works will not regret having this special set. For the newcomers to this great artist there will be a lot to discover, The music itself, sure, but mainly the art of interpratation. In this alone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau shine high and above all other singers.

    2 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2007-03-11

The character of the singing is too operatic, too stagey and "projected" for what I want in a Lieder recital. I bought the disc on the recommendation of another Amazon lay reviewer, but am quite disappointed. Perfectly fair. This music is not easy to find (the Wilhelm Meister songs not easy to find all together).
