5 out of 5 stars Correction.......2006-12-13

Now folks, both of what the two other reviewers wrote about the tragical death of Fritz Wunderlich is wrong. Wunderlich died in hospital at September 17 1966. He had broken his skull, when he fell down the stairs in the hunting-house of a friend. Late in the evening of September 16, Wunderlich, as usual when not at home, had phoned his wife in Munich. He was very tired from strolling through the forest the whole day, making out the ideal locations for the hunt, which should start early in the next morning (Wunderlich was a passionate hunter). After he had wished his wife a good night, he went to the staircase in order to go down to his bedroom at the first floor. He still wore his heavy hunting boots - with open shoestrings! As walking downstairs, Wunderlich struggled over the open shoestrings and grabbed for the banisters, which was not more than a rope, fixed to the wall. The banisters teared out, and Wunderlich fell down the whole stairs. Fritz Wunderlich died in hospital the next day. It was only short before his 36'th birthday. An exceptional singing career had come to an untimely end. Some people believe that Wunderlich was drunken at the time of accident. If this is true can't be proven any more. But still this is not what his close friends said, regarding his accident and his death. In my opinion Wunderlich was the last of the really great tenors of the last century. All the tenors which came to fame after him (sorry folks, even such maestros as Pavarotti and Domingo) lack a certain quality in singing. It's the ease of breath flow, or singing on the breath without pushing the voice, it's the overtones, the legato, the mezza voce, the messa di voce and many more things - in short: the overall beauty of the voice through both registers. Wunderlich was the last tenor who had all this. Other examples are Caruso, McCormack, Gigli (despite the sobbing in his later recordings) and of course the wonderful Jussi Björling. But these are only some few names. If you listen for example to the cd's in the box "Famous tenors of the past" you will find that there were many very good and outstanding tenors in the first half of the 20'th century and - as we can only assume - in the time before the invention of the grammophone. Take a close look at todays famous tenors (I know, there are some quite good and promising ones) but what are they in comparison to those tenors (or better to say, to their voices and singing) I just mentioned before?

Please make your own decision.

5 out of 5 stars Fritz Wunderlich can do no wrong...........2006-05-05

... okay, maybe. It's just that I've never heard a recording I didn't love. And I prefer that he sing everything in German even when that means not using original language.

This is a bit strange because I'm most often bugged by Don Carlos and Vepres in Italian (just a personal quirk). Of course, I'm also bugged by dropping the "s" in Don Carlos, which is always incorrect. The man's name IS Carlos whether in Italian or French.

I tried to write Mr. Avila a personal note, but could not, so let me say that Fritz Wunderlich did not die of cancer, but a dreadful accident in Scotland (I'll not go into the whys and wherefores, I just wanted to set PART of the record straight.)

5 out of 5 stars The Wonder of Wunderlich.......2005-11-22

Deutsche Grammophone does it again! This is an extensive 3-cd compilation album featuring the artistry of the great German tenor Fritz Wunderlich in a variety of vocal repertoire - Baroque cantata/oratorio, opera and Lieder. Like the other critic pointed out, I first heard Fritz sinigng a superb Tamino in the Karl Bohm Magic Flute, although I have also heard him sing Lieder opposite the mezzo soprano Christa Ludwig and baritone Dietrich Fischer Dieskau, who were his contemporaries and colleagues. Wunderlich died tragically in 1966 of cancer. He inspired a generation of purely lyric tenors or "tenors di grazie" whose charming voice would never roughen and lack grace. His Germanic style earned him popularity in World War II Europe and he was the leading exponent of Lieder in the 50's. His tenor voice is glorious, as close to a male angel as possible. On this recording, we are treated to sumptuous arias from Bach's Christmas/Easter Oratorios, and movements from 2 cantatas. Also noteworthy are the unsurpassed performances of Mozart tenor heroes- such as Belmonte from "Die Entfuhrung Aus Dem Serail" (Abduction from the Seraglio) and his unbeatable Tamino from Die Zauberflote The Magic Flute. He sings bel canto opera arias fo tenor, from master composers Rossinni, Bellini and Verdi. While I don't much like that he is singing Italian arias in German, one must remember that at this time, in the LP Era of World War II Germany and Austria, German-born opera singers sang Italian opera in German translation/revisions. While many German singers could indeed sing in Italian, they were mostly trained to sing it in German because of excessive national pride and because Germans viewed Italian opera as course and un-melodic. Still, there have been superb German singers who sang in Italian like Wagner diva Birgit Nilsson, baritone Dietrich Fischer Dieskau, tenor Peter Schreier, soprano Edda Moser, baritone Walter Berry, tenor Herman Pretty, all post-Wunderlich sensations. Wunderlich sings Lieder in one CD with great and unrivaled musicianship. Especially impressive are the Viennese pieces. Further to the cd's this album is equipped with photos of Wunderlich and his family and a detailed profile biography.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I could give this release more than 5 stars: it's terrific!!!.......2005-10-28

I knew little about the German tenor Fritz Wunderlich (1930-1966), except reading the accolades given to his recordings and performances by reviewers in "American Record Guide" over the past 13 years. I knew Wunderlich recorded the role of Tamino in the famous DG recording of Mozart's "Die Zauberflote", with Karl Bohm/Berlin Philharmonic (Now on DG Originals CDs), but was not aware of what a wide range of repertoire he had until hearing this release.

This release has a wide variety of Wunderlich's discography, including Bach arias from his Christmas and Easter Oratorios, and movements from 2 cantatas; his Mozart roles in "Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail" (Eugen Jochum/Bavarian Radio Orchestra) and "Die Zauberflote" (Karl Bohm/Berlin Philharmonic); a variety of arias and duets by Rossini, Bellini, Verdi, Richard Strauss, mostly sung in German, and with Hermann Prey, baritone and Erika Koth, soprano in many of the duets; Baroque arias by Handel, from "Xerxes" (including the famous "Ombre mai fu" sung in German) and "Julius Caesar", selections from Monteverdi's "Orfeo" (an early track from 1955 sung in Italian); Schumann's "Dichterliebe", 4 Beethoven Lieder, including "Adelaide" and "Der Kuss"; and 9 Schubert lieder, including "An der Musik," and "Der Musensohn", all with Hubert Giesen, piano; Popular songs such as "Granada" and Viennese songs, with chamber orchestra accompaniment. There are no texts for the songs, but you may have text booklets with other CD releases, so don't really need them when you hear Wunderlich's beautiful voice.

There is a booklet with articles about Wunderlich's career, including a preface by his widow, Eva Wunderlich, photos of Wunderlich as a boy and young man, with his wife Eva in 1965, and children Constanze, Wolfgang, and Barbara. I enjoy reading and looking at the booklet, even apart from listening to the beautiful recordings.

Wunderlich was a genius, and his voice sounds great in every track, mono (some, but not a majority) and stereo (most of the tracks in the 7 discs are stereo) alike. If you love great music, and opera, but like me aren't often of a mind to sit still for 3 hours to listen to one, get this. It's a great release, and reasonably priced to boot. I'm thankful to God for great music, for the ability to hear and feel, and for Fritz Wunderlich and his service to music lovers everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Beverly Sills Sings Operetta: A Rare Album.......2004-08-22

For fans of the 60's and 70's opera legend Beverly Sills, this rare and often neglected album will be pure gold. Fans of sopranos are willing to buy anything their favorite diva ever recorded. Beverly Sills, in collaboration with her conductor Julius Rudel and the London Philharmonic put together a kind of tribute album to Vienna's operettas and the music of its Waltz King Johann Strauss. This was originally an LP album that has been digitally remastered on cd. It is very rare and therefore very expensive and very much in demand. "Welcome To Vienna" features orchestral music- Thunder and Lightning Polka and the Overture to Johann Strauss' operetta A Night In Venice. As far as the singing, Beverly Sills delivers sheer brilliance and charm in the German-sung pieces here, starting with "Voices Of Spring" which makes use of florid and high coloratura embellishments. Beverly Sills' version is the most beautiful I've heard, on equal grounds with soprano Tracy Dahl's version. Marietta's Song from The City Of The Dead is quite moving and Beverly Sills' sweet, feminine, alluring voice truly captures the spirit of the melancholy song. Of late, only Renee Fleming sung Marietta's Lied just as beautifully.

The rest of the arias are quite well done. Beverly Sills sings beautifully in German, and she is the equal of the German master soprano Elizabeth Schwarzkopf, whom we are lead to believe she is modeling herself after in this recording. Schwartzkopf recorded an operetta album in 1959, which is available on EMI's Recordings Of The Century label. That album features much of the same pieces Beverly Sills is singing here. It's interesting to compare both singers and discover they both have artistry, skill and a floating, easy take on these non-dramatic simple pieces that are "dessert for the voice" in Sill's own words. Much like Schwarzkopf, Sills sings with refined elegance and calculated perfection. Her "In Chambre Separee" is beautiful, continental, and particularily good because Beverly Sill's French was always on the money. This aria combines French and German in a blissfully seductive way as a young maid invites a young man to an opera box where they could have dinner, champagne and a heart to heart. The Marlene Deitrich style aria "Meine Lippen" is sung perfectly by Beverly Sills. This aria is a cabaret style song in which the singer reflects on her showy, nightlife style of living. Finally, the aria "Wien, Wien" is a gorgeous praise to the city of Vienna.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2003-07-20

This is a wonderful set. I would like to correct an error below. The climax in the Liebestod is a high A flat not high C. But you have to cut through the dense orchestration. That's why it's hard.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific recording.......2003-07-06

I write this as s service to Christa Ludwig fans. This is a set of Lieder. Christa Ludwig is fabulous - as usual.

But if you want to hear Christa ludwig in a set of operatic recitals that will knock of your socks and blow you to bits. Look for this CD called "Celebrating Christa Ludwig". It has Christa Ludwig singing excerpts from Elektra (as Elektra!!!), Ariadne auf Maxos (as Ariadne!!), Die Frau Ohne Schatten (as the Dyer's Wife), Barber of Serville (as rosina) and the Immolation Scene of Gotterdammerung (as Brunnhilde!!!). She will blow you to bits with her unmatchable dramatic sense, vocal power and beauty of tone - the greatest Brunnhilde that never was and the greatest Elektra that never was. She did sing Ariadne once in Salzburg in 1964, and she sang the Dyer's Wife for 10 years from 1964 (Vienna State Opera) to 1974 (Salzburg Festival). Her complete Ariadne is available under Myto records.

5 out of 5 stars Christa in her prime.......2001-09-19

Being an admirerer of Christa Ludwig, I went into purchasing this recording with great expectations, and it did not disappoint in any way. Ludwig is in her prime and is heard in wonderful interpretations and beautiful singing from among several composers and works. I not only enjoy listening to her personally, but am also able to put it to great use use in my Vocal Literature class here at the college in which I teach.

5 out of 5 stars Christa Ludwig is in great shape.......2000-04-15

She sang all the major mezzo roles, and also some in the dramatic soprano repertory, notably Leonora in Fidelio, Lady Macbeth and the Marschallin.

Her voice is a rich, expressive mezzo capable of dramatic incisiveness and even throughout its considerable range. Her upper register in mezzo music is excintingly projected.

Although this compilation is composed of different recordings in different settings in different years, all of them show a young Ludwig when she had not yet acquired her prime and her status of, arguably, the best mezzo of the world, which would arrive in the years to come.

Ludwig, thirteen years Schwarzkopf's junior, was also a member of the legendary Ensamble of Berlin, which meant that each appearance of hers in any opera produced in Berlin, Munich, Vienna, London, Paris....by this Ensamble was backed by many hours of rehearsals with the same group of musicians. Usually this group comprised Schwarzkopf, Grümmer, Seefried, Berger, Güeden, Dermota, Tauber, and of course Furtwängler. This is how the legendary recording of COSI FAN TUTTE was made, in which she shared credits with Schwarzkopf.

Disc one is devoted to Brahms -not less than 30 Lieder are here. She doesn't sing Brahms with intimacy, rather she attacks each song with open throat. Her diction, her care for words is now proverbial. My favorite Lied in this disc is In stiller Nacht. She sets the melancholic mood of the song with her rich, vibrant contralto-like tones.

Disc two brings us Ludwig singing Mahler, Schumann and Reger. From the melodic lines of Mahler's Des Knaben Wunderhorn to the tortuous inflexions of Max Reger's two songs, she shows an extreme afinity with these composers. Schumann is taken very sensously, one can almost feel her velvety and creamy narrations of the woman-in-love of the song cycle.

Disc three is devoted to Schubert, Wolf and Strauss. Ludwig was not compelled to sing too much Wolf or Strauss (only 5 Lieder by these composers). It is her Schubert that shows her in splendid form. Auf dem Wasser zu singen is sung at such a low speed that her tone can only be described as luxurious. Erlkönig finds in her voice an ideal interpreter for the four characters of the song. In Wolf's Gesang Weylas, Gerald Moore has produced some magical arpeggios in the piano accompaniment, but of course this in only natural in him being the best accompanist ever.

Disc four is a miscellaneous melange of Ravel, Saint-Saëns, Rossini, Wagner, Händel and Bach. Ludwig never tried to sing on stage Isolde, but she recorded it; the Liebestod is taken at an exciting pace and one is only waiting for the climax to see if she can do it (the top c's). Yes, she can do it. Händel's aria from Julius Caesar is, again, sensous and exciting. Händel is another composer with whom she felt communicated. Ravel's Chansons Madécasses can only be described as magical. And of course she was outstanding in Bach oratorios, as is the case of Johannes Passion.

Wagner's Wessendonk Lieder are sung lustrously. I especially enjoyed Träume, which actually is sung, as its title suggests, dreamily.

Praised be the two accompanists for the majority of the recordings, Gerald Moore and Geoffrey Parsons. Both have gone now and the musical world seems so empty without their supreme touch. I do believe that 50% of Christa Ludwig's success as a Lieder Singer was due to them.

Thank you to EMI for this reissue.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest tenors ever.......2005-03-15

When Fritz Wunderlich died (tragically, in an accident) at the
age of 36, some of Opera's greatest experts and critics were
devastated and called his death a "heavy blow to music."

How true. Wunderlich never had the chance to get international
exposure at the level modern tenors do. He lived in the "wrong era", before media hype, and he died youg - much too young.

Yet even today, Wunderlich experiences a remarkable renaissance.
The world has (re-)discovered this gorgeous voice. Monaco and
Corelli had more power (though not much more), Bjoerling's and
Pavarotti's and Joseph Schmidt's timbres were more ringing (though not much more), Di Stefano and Carreras sang more sweetly (though not much more), and Bergonzi's and Tucker's belcanti were fabulous.

But hardly any of those had all thoe qualities combined like Fritz Wunderlich. Listen to his breathtaking musicality when he sang Mozart, his effortless height, his clear diction (probably unparalleled by any opera singer ever), his phrasing, his passion when he sang Verdi or Puccini.

And his height ... has there ever been a tenor who could reach,
seemingly without effort, the high D (no printing mistake...)
the way he did in "Granada" ?

And not just that he hit the high notes. It's how he hit them:
with expression, intelligence and, wherever required (mainly in
song and operetta), with wit and charm.

His Lieder are exemplary, his Italian songs probably more impressive than most Italian tenors'.

If one imagines that Wunderlich was just at the beginning of his career, one shudders at how great he would have become. I think he would have been mentioned in one breath with Caruso and Gigli.

What a huge loss to music, indeed.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Finest Male Singers We Will Ever Know.......2000-10-29

I don't claim to know a great deal about opera and my knowledge of great classical music singers -- German or otherwise -- is limited to the usual list of suspects and divas. But as far as I'm concerned, Fritz Wunderlich possessed one of the greatest God-given voices you will ever hear in ANY type of Western music. If you ever wondered why so many music critics still lament this man's tragic death before he could become a household name, I would advise you to purchase this collection. Good Lord, what a voice! Believe me, once you hear ol' Fritz belt out a few tunes, you won't be thinking of any other male singer in any other type of music (whether it's Pavrotti, Domingo, Melchior, Vickers, Fischer-Dieskau, Sinatra, Nat "King" Cole, Billy Eckstine, Elvis, George Jones, Sam Cooke or even Bob Dylan) for some time. Herr Wunderlich was simply in a class by himself, and you are also strongly urged to get his EMI recording with Christa Ludwig and Otto Klemperer of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde. Be warned, though, on that one. Not only will he shatter your heart with his singing of Mahler's sad lyrics, but he's liable to cause you lockjaw with his unique, incomparable phrasing.

.
Of over 600 songs, Fischer-Dieskau and Gerald Moore realized over three-quarters: these are those. Gerald Moore was of course as important to this project as Fischer-Dieskau.

DGG's sound is excellent.

This set is a remarkable document of art.

5 out of 5 stars An encyclopedic collection of Schubert songs, Volume 2.......2005-10-26

Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (born 1925) is considered by many to be the foremost authority on Schubert Lieder for the male voice in our time. He likely made more recordings of this area of music than any other singer, having not only this 9 disc set, but another 9 disc set (Volume 1) for DG, the three complete song cycles: "Schwanengesang", "Die Schone Mullerin" and "Winterreise" (DG, Volume 3 of Fischer-Dieskau's Lieder edition), plus a 6 disc set of Schubert Lieder for EMI, also with Gerald Moore. Figure in the earlier recordings from the late 1940s, and live recitals on such labels as Orfeo, and there are ALOT of Fischer-Dieskau Schubert lieder recordings available.

Critics of vocal recitals and lieder may have other opinions, but I think this is as fine a collection as any. I keep this, like Volume 1, to be able to refer to a given song, not to listen to disc after disc of Schubert Lieder in one sitting, even though all are delightful works. Fischer-Dieskau manages to make Schubert's simple, strophic songs sound like great masterpieces, perhaps greater than they really are. And pianist Gerald Moore is an excellent partner: Moore and Fischer-Dieskau work as one, in perfect sync.

Keep in mind these are all songs for male voice, and not the complete Schubert songs. DG should be commended for releasing these recordings on CD and keeping them before the public. If you are really a Schubert completist, consider also the complete Hyperion Schubert Edition, with Graham Johnson, piano, and singers such as Lucia Popp, Peter Schreier, Janet Baker, Stephen Varcoe, Maragaret Price, Ian Bostridge, Martyn Hill singing all the 700+ songs Schubert composed in his short lifetime (1797-1828; Schubert's first lieder were composed about 1815). (The Hyperion Schubert edition is available in Great Britain for about $250 for 40 discs, if you cannot find it in the US).

For further comment, please see my remarks for DG, Volume 1 of Schubert Lieder by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.

5 out of 5 stars Make up your mind to this journey........2001-02-07

Since this set of Schubert lieder (3 boxes, 21 cds in all) has become a legedary classic, I don't think I should make any comment. But just a suggestion to those who want to embark on these discs. Make up your mind on this journey. On facing such a tome record arranged and sung chronically, it's useless and wrong only to listen to some famous lieder or discs or just listen randomly. You should spare a long period of time, begin by listening from the very first disc to the last disc. And, during the period do not listen to any lied of other composers. Then gradually, lied by lied, disc by disc, you will forget this is Fischer-Diskau and Moore---This is a real life of a great soul! You are really touching and breathing with a great soul! Feel the sound of schubert, feel his struggle, his emotion, his feeling, his hate and love. Feel how those youthful spontaneous and raw lieder gradually developed into fully ripened masterpieces. Such wonderful experience belongs only to really patient listeners.

It took me about 2 full weeks to listen to the whole 21 discs. Fischer-Diskau and Moore chose the "Abschied(Farewell)" to be the last lieder read (this song happened to be the only lied of Schubert to be recite with piano accompaniment, and which was composed during his final years). Thus the whole hundreds of lieder, or the whole life of Schubert, ended on this lied, farewell to the earth. It began with "Leb wohl, du schoene Erde (Goodbye, you beautiful Earth)". I will forever remember when I finally came into this lied, on the first words of Diskau's "Leb wohl, du schoene Erde" I trembled and cried from the very first note to the last note. My god, it's untouchable granduer.

5 out of 5 stars LAS ROSAS DEL JARDIN.......2000-05-03

5 out of 5 stars The Mastersinger.......2000-06-24

If the second half of the 20th Century has musical signs, they must include that phenomenal German singer Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau who dominated the recital and concert halls, the opera stages and the recording studios in a way no other artist has done it, except maybe Leonard Bernstein. In celebration of this great artist's 75th birthday we have here a set which includes the gems of his lieder repertoire, starting with those great Schubert cycles in their most vivid performances. Just listen to those early renditions of the Schone Mullerin or with Jorg Demus, or to Schuman's Dichterliebe cycle (with the same pianist). And you shall not miss the artistry of this most sensitive voice in full volume of Mahler lieder with piano and orchestral songs. And what about the Morike lieder by Hugo Wolf? Well, you shall probably wonder at that special cooperation between the singer and the Russian pianist Svitoslav Richter. It is a performance of lifetime, and so it is with the Wintereise of Schubert with Barnboim at the piano. Those who know the artistry of Fischer-Dieskau and even those who have already other recordings of those great works will not regret having this special set. For the newcomers to this great artist there will be a lot to discover, The music itself, sure, but mainly the art of interpratation. In this alone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau shine high and above all other singers.

You don't have to be Viennese to love Viennese operettas, whose lilting waltz-rhythms and catchy tunes have captivated audiences since Johann Strauss, Jr., the Waltz King, originated the style with his masterpiece Die Fledermaus in 1874. His genius remains unequaled; among his successors and imitators, only Lehár (who had the temerity, and the skill, to compete with Schubert's setting of Goethe's "Heidenröslein"--No. 15 on this disc) got anywhere near him in compositional ability or inspiration. Thus, the stand-outs here are the "Laughing Song" from Fledermaus and the "Vilja-Song" from The Merry Widow. Many songs are the only survivors of totally forgotten operettas; indeed, some were written by amateur "spare-time" composers, like Heuberger and Zeller; yet the former's title song and the latter's "Don't be cross" (No. 4) have become classics. Most are about love, dreamed of, yearned for, fulfilled and unfulfilled; primarily slow, they are set off by a few lively, exuberant, mischievous ones. The program ends with "Vienna, City of my Dreams," which celebrates Vienna's glamour, but indirectly also its melting-pot culture: the name of its creator is Rudolf Sieczynski.

Barbara Bonney, star of opera and concert stage, obviously loves this music, but is not quite at home in it. Her voice, clear as a bell with a wonderful top, is perhaps too pure and uninflected for its sensuous seductiveness, sentimentality, and robust, earthy humor. Her German diction is unclear, and the Viennese dialect sounds alien to her. (Her translations, though mostly accurate, also betray a lack of idiomatic feeling.) Pianist Ronald Schneider's accompaniments are much closer to the style, but he sometimes camps them up. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars Time to don one's gloves and sip one's champagne - elegance personified.......2006-07-27

Let me begin by saying that I'd heard unfavourable reviews of this recording before I purchased it, but a snippet from one of the tracks which was played on the radio was delightful - and I decided to buy the CD in spite of the reviews.

I was not disappointed. It's odd - there is a reviewer below who mentions some problems with the middle register and a certain breathiness and lack of support which I cannot hear in this recording. Yet it's true that in her two subsequent recordings, the glow and wonder of Ms Bonney's voice are definitely impaired.

I listened once again to this CD, and once again was simply enchanted by it. It's possible that the voice is not the same as it was 20 years ago, but it's still incredibly beautiful, agile and intelligently used. I'm particularly charmed by her singing these operetta arias with a piano rather than orchestra - a much braver and more exposed singing and recording experience.

Ms Bonney is sweet, coy, deliciously teasing, devout and loving in turns, as required by the arias. She is always beautiful to listen to.

Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Charming, Funny, a new favorite.......2004-07-14

Maybe I'm not very serious in my listening habits, but this collection is a riot. I find myself humming the tunes all time time...and I was unfamiliar with most of them when I bought the recording. Lehar's setting of Goethe's poem Sah ein Knab' ein Roslein stehn from Friederike is quite wonderful and a nice contrast to the Schubert setting. (I also have Bonney singing that one.) The odd pieces, like Ich bin die Christel von der Post and the Schwips-Lied (tipsy song), are charming. I bought the CD for Mein Herr Marquis, a piece I learned as a high school accompanist, but the rest of this lovely recording has earned a place in my heart. I realize that Barbara Bonney's voice has changed over the years, but I think she really sounds like she's having fun on this one.

2 out of 5 stars Fading Radiance.......2004-03-24

I find this CD lacks a tonal clarity that Bonney's voice displayed in her younger productions as 'Sofie' from Der Rosenkavalier. There is a slight tremelo that begins to creep into her middle register (though, this a touchy register for all soprani) and Bonney relies too heavily on breathiness to display the classic tenuti in 'Meine Lippen'. In same song Bonney lacks a strong vocal support (specially towards the end of the song) and decides to 'speak' many notes. Her fading vocal abilities are nicely displayed in a recording studio (where subtle nuances required of fading vocal abilities are amplified) though her gasps of air between phrases (a harsh sign of the toughening of once famously relaxed vocal cords) should have been removed if at all possible. Her German is practically flawless (of course!) and she is very musical. There are moments where one can still hear the vocal technique 'Sofie' requires of a soprano; but the lack of vocal stability and continuity only makes one weep for that which is lost. This CD stands as a testiment to a fading 'radiance' that was such a marked success in her youth.

5 out of 5 stars Wunderbar!.......2003-07-15

There are some singers who never seem to have an off day, and Barbara Bonney is one of them. Through the years she has produced a series od CD's that have delighted the ears, bewitched the soul, and garnered her many loyal fans all over the world. And her newest offering is no disappointment: these charming remnants of a lost age may seem pure corn to some, but they were a wonderful discovery to this listener. And, of course, there are some old favorites included here as well: the title song (the best interpretation I've heard since Beverly Sills'), "Vilja", "Wien, du Stadt meinter Traume", and "Meine Lippen die kussen so heis". As usual, Bonney's voice is flawless, and her sheer joy in this music is infectious. True, a steady diet of this sort of thing may grow tiresome (like dining on marzipan every evening, perhaps) but in between bouts of Wagner and Verdi it's just the thing, and absolutely ravishing. I cannot find a single thing wrong with this album, and only those who don't care for Bonney or dislike the genre will have trouble with it. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Bonney sparkles in operetta recital.......2003-07-07

For fans of the great soprano Barbara Bonney, this CD is a must have! For those new to Bonney's artistry (or the world of operetta), this CD is a great beginning to what is sure to be a long romance. From the exhuberant opening track to the nostalgic closing song, Bonney's sparkling soprano is captured beautifully. The operetta repertoire gives Bonney ample opportunities to display her georgeous high notes whether in finely spun out pianissimo or in full voice splendor. Bonney's intimate manner of inflection with the German language- the colors she gives each word and phrase with a clear intention of meaning- is most remarkable. Ronald Schneider is wonderful at the piano. It is obvious to hear in the hour long recital how much fun this collaboration was for them. Tracks number 1, 8, 14, and 17 are stand-outs for their intimacy and enjoyment. I have no reservations in recommending this album to anyone, as Bonney and Schneider are in top form in this operetta recital. Their performance is sincere, authentic (just the right amount of schmaltz), and sheer pleasure for the listener!
