Petula sings about murder, James Bond - and love.......2002-10-15

Petula was at the peak of her career when these songs were recorded, mostly in 1966, whith some from 1967 and 1968. There is a lot of variety, including some songs which many Americans will recognise from their English versions. Among these are Mon amour (My love), Que reste t-il (Where do you go?), Si tu prenais le temps (A sign of the times), C'est ma chanson (This is my song), La derniere valse (The last waltz), L'amour viendra (My own true love - from Gone with the wind) and Tu reviendras vers ta maison (Am I that easy to forget). Petula fans may also recognise C'est ton affaire - a song she co-wrote and recorded an English version (Your way of life) which can be found on the twofer My love / I couldn't live without your love.

All these tracks are interesting - some actually sound better sung in French - but there are some other great tracks here, for which no English versions exist. Hello Mister Brown (a French song despite it's title) was a big French hit. L'agent secret was a song Petula wrote based on James Bond. Unlike Shirley Bassey, Petula never got the chance to do a James Bond theme song, but if this one had been translated into English, it would have been one of the best. Rebecca is a song about a woman who takes Petula's man, but Petula kills her - you can hear the gunshot.

So, a highly entertaining collection with plenty of variety, and you don't need to understand French to enjoy it, though you can find translations of some of the songs on Petula's official website.

PETULA CLARK . . . EN FRANCAIS.......2000-09-16

Although most Americans think of Petula Clark as "the Downtown girl from England", die-hard fans know her as an international song-stylist whose French hits outsold Piaf at a time when foreigners were making barely a dent in France's hit parade. Some of Clark's biggest U.S. hits - including "My Love", "A Sign of the Times", and the hugely successful international smash, "This Is My Song" - are given the Gallic touch here, with 24 other tracks completing the collection. Possibly the best of the lot is a superb rendition of the theme from "Gone With the Wind", Clark's lush vocal - filled with emotion - flashing us back to Scarlett and her determination never to go hungry again. Anyone hungry for a taste of pop music at its very best should invest in this 5-star release.

Brilliant selection of Petula's French music.......2002-10-09

This collection of songs recorded in 1963 and 1964 is typical in many ways of most of Petula's French music of the sixties, containing a mix of translated British and American songs with songs written in French, including some Petula co-wrote.

Having established herself initially as a rock'n'roll singer, Petula was already moving away from that, something that would be even more evident on her Hello Paris double album (the subject of a separate CD in this series). On this set, there is a great mix of the rocking and the romantic.

There are four extremely famous songs here - Please please me, Needles and pins, Anyone who had a heart and Hello Dolly - all sung superbly in French by Petula. Less well known translated songs are Second fiddle girl (Barbara Lynn), She's a fool (Lesley Gore), No go showboat (Beach boys), He was a friend of mine (Bobby Bare), Can't get over the bossa nova (Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme), Judy Judy Judy (Johnny Tillotson), It's party time, The lonely bull and I'm looking at the world through teardrops.

British fans will recognise two Shadows instrumentals (Dance on and Foot tapper) with French words added. Kathy Kirby did an English vocal version of Dance on, but I don't ever remember hearing Foot tapper with English lyrics - perhaps it never had any, as it was written by two of the Shadows.

Of the French songs, Petula co-wrote nine of them, demonstrating the she could write as well as sing. Yet, for me, the outstanding French song (written by Serge Gainsbourg) is O O Sheriff, a very saucy song about a sheriff learning how to love. Even if (like me) you don't know any French, you get a clear idea from the tone of the song. An English translation of this and other songs can be found on Petula's official website.

Early seventies French recordings.......2003-02-01

The tracks on this collection are generally not well known. Petula's hit making days were largely over, but she continued to maintain a high quality of music. There is plenty of variation, with a good mix of ballads and more upbeat songs. Petula sings everything here in French except the final track, Make a time for lovin', which she sings in English.

There are not many cover versions here - the most famous song here is I don't know how to love him, which actually begins with Jesus Christ superstar. There are also lovely versions of Beautiful sounds, Marie De Vere and Close your eyes. Those songs should be familiar to Petula's fans via their English versions, though the wider public are unlikely to recognise them.

There are plenty of original French songs that Petula sings superbly (of course). Petula's loyal fans will find much to enjoy about this collection.
