The revisionist take on the Rat Pack's razor-witted King of Cool reveals a Dean Martin who was considerably more complex than the Titan of Tipplers legend; a man who would just as soon retire to his room with a tumbler of milk to watch a TV Western than prowl the Strip with his famous cohorts. That sublime, preternatural indifference is both underscored and belied with dizzying regularity on this good 30-track overview of Martin's singing career. The breezy hits "That's Amore" and "Volare" underscored his public staying power when many counted him out in the face of a surging 1950s youth market. He repeated the feat again with trademark effortlessness a decade later to knock no less than the Beatles off the top of the charts with the unlikely, if inviting schmaltz of "Everybody Loves Somebody." Ever informed by his warm, deceptive vocal ease, Martin's rich signature tunes are well-represented here. But the collection also spans enough lovable kitsch ("Mambo Italiano," "Little Old Wine Drinker Me") and unabashed romantic yearning ("Innamorata," "Send Me the Pillow You Dream On") to deepen the compelling mystery of one of pop music's most enduring ciphers. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Amazon.com essential recording
Stephen Sondheim's Company still sounds as modern as it did when it opened in 1970. Donna McKechnie, Susan Browning, and Pamela Myers spoof the Andrews Sisters with gusto in the tongue-twisting "You Could Drive a Person Crazy," while Browning and Dean Jones's "Barcelona" is filled with longing and heartbreak. And, of course, Elaine Stritch reigns supreme, proving once more that you don't have to be the best singer to steal a musical. An extra track features Larry Kert (Tony in the original West Side Story) singing "Being Alive." Kert had replaced Jones early in the run but wasn't on the original cast recording. It would have been nice to finally get the lyrics, though. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:
Better than ever....Bobby baby!.......2007-07-13
Just gutsy enough to say it like it is/was at the time people didn't want to talk about such issues!
Of course Sondheim wrote this music so early in his career and yet it holds up so well today. Outstanding....Just "listen to the words" as one might say. An enjoyable task with the beautiful music and vocals on this outstanding CD

One of the Greatest Ever.......2006-12-19
The performances on this recording are also unequaled. Not only are the songs well sung, but they're extremely well acted. This is especially true of what has become one of Sondheim's classics, "The Ladies Who Lunch", performed admirably by Elaine Stritch. Other standout tracks are Beth Howland's version (the original) of "Getting Married Today", Dean Jones' stirring interpretaion of "Someone is Waiting" and Pamela Myers' stunning rendition of "Another Hundred People."
My First Sondheim.......2006-07-25
My only complaint is that the late, great Larry Kert, who took over for Dean Jones who left the show shortly after it opened (so soon in fact that Kert was nominated for the Tony), isn't on the recording. Jones is fine but Kert was even better. And of course this includes the now legendary version of The Ladies Who Lunch sung (?) by Elaine Stritch. But the star of the recording is Sondheim. It's a brilliant score!

Curb Records has long specialized in low-budget repackagings of previously released material, and they certainly haven't gone out of their way with this 12-song Dean Martin compilation. Culled from his Capitol years, this does indeed feature some great moments--"That's Amore," "Volare," "Inamorata" and "Come Back to Sorrento" are all present and accounted for--and if you need a little Dino to spruce up a mix tape, this'll certainly do ya. However, Collectors Series offers much more bang for your buck, even if it costs a few extra dollars. --Dan EpsteinCustomer Reviews:
DEANO.......2007-05-19

his rang and versitility. Get the music sit back and remember how good entertainers were in the 50's and 60's; this is a no brainer.
Dean Martin "All-Time Greatest Hits".......2007-05-10
A solid Dino CD despite a disappointment here and there.......2006-04-19
One reason why this song set never fails to sooth me is the beauty of the songs Dean Martin sings here. His voice is in excellent form and the musical arrangements are all very good, even if the horns are a little too loud at the beginning of "You Belong To Me." The song "Sway" is romantic, too; and "Standing On The Corner" is a classic '40s and '50s type crooner guy song about how beautiful women are.
The CD ends with "Come Back To Sorrento" which is somehow a type of flourishing last note for this song set. It fits in well and the songs have been very well organized.
Now I have to consider the other side of the coin. As Amazon notes, whichever group of people who made this CD could have (and should have) been more generous with the music we get here. Of course it's all great; but with 12 songs in 33 minutes they could have added at least one more song. The CD also represents only Dean's "all-time greatest hits" recorded during his contract with Capitol Records. I would say that for a few bucks more you should consider buying the CD entitled Dino: The Essential Dean Martin instead. That CD has selections from both the Capitol years and the Reprise years (after Dean left Capitol Records he recorded on the Reprise label). It's a much more comprehensive selection. But, if you're on a budget--or, if you don't know much about Dean Martin and just want an inexpensive CD to start out with, then maybe you should pick this CD after all. Just be aware that some will argue--with good reason--that the songs on this CD are not ALL of Dean Martin's "all-time greatest hits."
Similarly, the liner notes, although very well written by Don Ovens, do not discuss the work Dean did at Reprise Records. The history of Dean's professional career is encapsulated pretty nicely, however, in the one page essay. Songs credits are also given which is something I always like to see.
In short, this is a very relaxing CD full of beautiful music that is great for persons on a budget or people new to Dean who just want to try a Dean Martin CD without spending too much money. While it is not comprehensive, I also would recommend it for fans of classic pop vocals.

The thoroughly excellent sophomore release by the two best-looking members of Luna should make any fans who bemoaned that group's demise happy as hell with its lovingly crafted cocktail hour visions. Back Numbers offers up perfect rainy day music on every graceful, laconic song. The album recalls the sophisticated, decadent sounds of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra throughout. Unsurprisingly, Hazlewood is covered on one song here but this is no cheesy retro exercise; in fact, no one has mined this type of material with such originality since Nick Cave approached it in the 1980s. Each song is imbued with a subtly different style, with nods to the hazy psychedelic folk-rock of Opal and Clay Allison on numbers like "Say Goodnight" and the steampunk synth washes of Sonic Boom (who performs on the album) and Suicide on "Singer Sing." Other numbers like "The Sun Is Still Sunny"--awash in sophisticated strings, hushed dual harmonies, a dash of piano and Mr. Wareham's warm and melodic guitar lines--don't sound like anyone else, at all. Huzzah! --Mike McGonigalCustomer Reviews:
Hooks into You.......2007-06-21
Here they position themselves either as terminally retro or somewhere ahead of the curve. They splice their originals with back numbers from Lee Hazlewood, Donovan Leitch and The Troggs. The pick of these is Britta's soaring take on Hazlewood's You Turn my Head Around.
Crystal Blue R.I.P. calls to mind contemporary singer-songwriter Stephin Merritt (of The Magnetic Fields). As does Dean's deadpan intonation on Words You Used to Say: "Glasses dirty, the drinks are dead. Happy birthday, have this you said/We're color coded, we're coded red. Those are words you used to say".
Best original is the velvety pop of The Sun is Still Sunny, with its laconic "inside my suitcase an orchestra plays". Boldest whimsy is Britta skipping through the cult 1960s TV-show theme White Horses. This attractive album hooks into you like a TV fishing show.

Getting warmer... warmer... warmer..........2007-05-02
Songs that stick in my head are:
"You Turned My Head Around" features a deliciously 60s style, French girl chorus. I think this could have been a radio hit had Dean and Britta tweaked the bridge and finished writing the lyrics. I like it anyway though.
In "White Horses", Britta turns what would be a rather standard song into something else with her phrasing and delivery. The mini-chorus "on white horses, snowy white horses..." is the best simple vocal hook I've heard in recent memory. The song dissolves into a sonic farewell of keyboards, unfortunately not going anywhere too far but at least gives the impression that you've _been_ somewhere.
"Me and My Babies" has Dean singing on the verses before Britta comes in with some dreamy backing vocals on the chorus. A nicely floaty and meditative piece but again it feels unfinished.
The trend is obvious here. Back Numbers is a good CD but it would have benefitted from tighter songwriting and more fleshed out ideas. Oh yeah, and my girlfriend would like to point out that the "nah-nah-nah" section of "Say Goodnight" was lifted directly from Luna's "Romantica". These shortcomings aside, I think it will make a perfect lazy summer day soundtrack.
Seduced after 2 listens.......2007-04-29
Not quite Luna, but I guess that's the point, isn't it?
Oh, and here's a bonus - Be sure to catch them on tour - the material from Back Numbers sounds great live, and their earlier Dean & Britta standards (Ginger Snaps, Night Nurse, Knives from Bavaria) really come alive in concert. Plus you'll get a couple of Luna and Galaxie 500 numbers.

Based on Nicholas Sparks' novel, director Nick Cassavetes film spins the bittersweet tale of a 60-year romance, as seen from the polar perspectives of its promising youth and the travails of an old age cursed by Alzheimer's. Its soundtrack effectively echoes those polar dramatic concerns, with composer Aaron Zigler's gentle orchestral score largely giving voice to the character's melancholy present, while a rich, well-chosen slate of vintage material by Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller imparts a restless energy to their youth. There's a certain schmaltz to much of Zigman's work here, yet cues like "House Blues/The Porch Dance.." and "Noah's Journey" argue he's achieved something more elusive than mere melodramatic wallpaper with the deceivingly difficult task at hand; it can't be easy to have your work seasoned with the likes of Ellington's sassy "Alabamy Home" and Goodman's still-vibrant "One O'Clock Jump." Sharply contrasting versions of "I'll Be Seeing You" by Holiday and Jimmy Durante bookend the soundtrack, perfectly evoking the story's alternating shades of hope and fading nostalgia and framing Zigman's understated work in the bargain. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description
Based on the best selling novel by Nicholas Sparks ("A Walk To Remember", "Message In A Bottle"), "The Notebook" is the story of Noah and Allie, teenage lovers torn apart by WWII and Allie's parents' demands to marry a respectable lawyer. After 14 years apart, they meet again and rekindle their true love. Starring Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams, James Garner, and Gena Rowlands. The soundtrack is a propelling force. In addition to classic WWII era pieces, Aaron Zigman's score suites enhance the record with beautifully dramatic themes. Score performed by the Hollywood Studio Symphony.Customer Reviews:

It say's go for the "true love", settle for nothing else no matter what may be in store, because love that is "true" and as beautiful as their's was, is a rare thing!
I absolutely loved the ending.
I also loved that a movie CAN be truly wonderful, beautiful and touching WITHOUT grafic "sex scenes!" Also sadly a rare thing in movies today.

A Solid Band Finding Improvement By Learning From Their Mistakes!.......2007-06-21
Their sixth studio album entitled "Youth," which was released on November 16, 2004, is considered by many as their "big comeback album." 3-1/2 stars -- Calm, cool and collected...sort of.......2006-08-10
Well, yes and no. For one thing, it's surprising that Ed Roland and the boys left Atlantic Records and jumped to an indie label for this album. But for the most part, things do sound fine. The melodies are as good as they've always been, but the lyrics...well, not to start an argument, but I was initially wondering why they titled the album Youth, and after listening to it, I came to the conclusion that it could be because some of the songs sound like a youth wrote them ("Feels Right (It Feels All Right)" and "Under Heaven's Skies" come readily to mind).
There are a few other songs that are lyrically challenged, but thankfully there are more songs that sound better, like "Satellite", "General Attitude" and especially "How Do You Love" (actually, the lyrics in the latter don't look like much on paper either, but it's all in the way Ed sings them). In short, Youth feels more like a safe album than a truly great album. There isn't a "Shine" or "December" to be found on here, but it's still above-average. If you're a hardcore Collective Soul fan, you'll either love it or hate it, so pick it up and make your own judgment.

The Master Of Suave And The King Of Cool: Dean Martin.......2005-08-14
This 2 disk set, "Dino: The Essential Dean Martin" (Special Platinum Edition), is a wonderful gathering of tunes that represent Dean's many years as a recording artist and bring back memories of a time when his velvety tones and suave ways enchanted listeners everywhere. There is something in this set for everyone. Songs like 'That's Amore' and 'Standing On The Corner' reflect the fun, joyous side of Dean, while his versions of 'Return to Me' and 'Volare' epitomize the deep passion and yearning we all feel when were in love. If you like to swing, look no further than 'Ain't That a Kick in the Head', my favorite Dean Martin song. 'Memories Are Made of This', 'You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You', and his signature song 'Everybody Loves Somebody' are also great tunes, and Dean's treatments are truly unforgettable. With the addition of the bonus disk this set is a great choice for any music collector. Young and old alike enjoy and treasure Dean Martin's music for good reason, it is truly timeless. If you are already a Dean Martin fan, I guess all of this is old news and I am just preaching to the choir, but if you're not a Dean Martin fan yet, then this excellent representation of his musical career is the perfect beginning to your Dean Martin music collection.
Another singer that I also listen to is Monte Procopio. If you enjoy the Big Band sound with swinging arrangements his CD "Swingin' With Style" would also be a good listen.

A must buy for Petula diehard fans.......2007-05-08
"Baby It's Cold Outside" (with Rod McKuen) is also great - it works so much better than Rod's duet of the same song with Dusty on his late 70s Christmas TV special because this kind of song suits Petula so much better than Dusty. Other special highlights for me include the incredibly gritty "Can't Get You To Love Me" with Gilbert O'Sullivan which proves Petula's situational rock credibility and her well matched duet of "I'm A Woman/Wedding Bell Blues" with the late great Peggy Lee.
There're other good stuff with Harry Belafonte and Bobby Darin, but I'd be lying if I said the album is devoid of turkeys - the Andy Williams number in particular is a low point.
All in, "Duets" is a must buy for Petula diehard fans.
