Boskovsky's encyclopedic collection with the Vienna Philharmonic, recorded between 1957 and 1976, is as close to definitive as one is likely to get. There was a special camaraderie between Boskovsky and the Philharmonic--he was a member of the orchestra's violin section for 37 years and conducted their New Year's Day concerts from 1955 until 1979. There was also a special empathy that these performers, as custodians of a tradition going back to its origins, felt for the music of the Strauss family. It comes across quite wonderfully on these mid-price CDs, which have been painstakingly remastered for an edition every collector should have. --Ted Libbey

    5 out of 5 stars Superb collection.......2006-03-07

If you love or are just curious about the music of Vienna's Strauss family, this is the box set for you. You need look no further. Willi Boskovsky and the Vienna Philharmonic set the standards for the performance of these sublime waltzes, polkas and marches. The sound is fine, too, even though the recordings are not new. This is, quite simply, a magnificent set. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars Boskovsky and the Strauss Family of Vienna........2003-06-12

A long series of Strauss music recordings conducted by Willi Boskovsky provides the contents of this slender, super-compact box of 6 CDs. Those who collected the original issues should check the contents before jettisoning them, because not everything has been reissued here. I especially regret that the vocal version of "An der schönen blauen Donau" has been omitted.

No combination has ever excelled Willi Boskovsky and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in performing this repertoire. Although the waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, marches and overtures were performed over and over again by these musicians, there is never a hint of workaday routine or staleness to be heard here. Everything seems to unfold naturally. Each item's inherent character is displayed. Tiny nuances and felicities of phrasing and a balance that favors the melody and reduces the accompaniment make these performances inimitable. The performance of "Morgenblätter" seems to provide a tad more excitement and impact than the other 85 items.

The recordings were made between 1960 and 1976. They are studio recordings, not deriving from the famous New Year concerts, and all but the few items from the very earliest year provide excellent sound.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Too bad we don't have the option of 10 stars...........2006-05-24

I just finished again listening to this CD that I've had for maybe fifteen years. I most often prefer complete operas, but of course those are not always available. For me, Fritz Wunderlich can do not wrong, although a very knowledgeable friend of mind objects to his German. I think his German is top drawer, but it's not my native language.

Il mio tesoro... has never been high on my list of arias, but when Wunderlich sings it as Folget der Heiffgeliebten... it took me many hearings before I stopped crying at the first two notes. Tearing is one thing, crying is a bit silly, but there it is.

His exquisite singing is only once slightly under pitch (I really don't care; I only remember it). Moreover, he has friends on this CD -- Grummer, Lorengar, Prey, Frick...

I think I have everything he recorded that appears on CD and I also have a DVD of the Barber -- in German, of course. My only discomfort is with Koeth who is a good singer, but of course a lyric and not a mezzo or even close to one.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest lyric tenor of the recorded era........2002-07-24

Fritz Wunderlich had it all -- an incredibly beautiful voice and the artistry to use it with drama or tenderness, as the music called for. He also had genuine emotional and musical integrity. He was almost certainly the greatest lyric tenor of the recorded era. Regretably, he died in an accident in his mid 30s. But, although his recorded career was short, he left a surprisingly large legacy of outstanding recordings, many of which are included in this 3-CD set. Some people may be put off because Wunderlich sang famous Italian, French, and Russian arias in German. PLEASE don't let that keep you from acquiring these recordings. When you hear Wunderlich sing, the language in which he is singing will seem inconsequential. Only the incredible beauty and artistry of his singing will matter. This man was special and so is this collection.

    5 out of 5 stars Thrilling lyricism.......2001-10-10

Fritz who? You may well ask, for the great Fritz Wunderlich died before he'd ever achieved true international stardom. But to my ears, at least, he possessed the most beautiful lyric tenor voice on record. He had it all - superb musicality, power, warmth, and a gorgeous and immediately recognisable timbre. He could also be exciting when he wanted to, as his tour de force performance of Granada (available elsewhere) thrillingly proves. Wunderlich's death in 1966 - a few days short of his 36th birthday - deprived music lovers of a fantastic talent.

This 3CD set reinforces that loss. Among the many highlights included here is an unforgettable Folget der Heissgeliebten (Il Mio Tesoro) from Don Giovanni. It matters not a jot that Wunderlich is singing in German rather than Italian. He knew how to overcome the relative harshness of the German language with his poetic phrasing and honeyed diction. Here his breath control is amazing, and his passion transforms the character of Don Ottavio from a one-dimensional fop into a red-blooded hero. Tremendous stuff.

But for me his greatest achievement is his rendition of the aria Komm, O Holde Dame from Boieldieu's La Dame Blanche, featured on Disc One. Play this first, and you'll be entranced by the beauty of Wunderlich's faultless legato, then thrilled by the intensity and energy of the conclusion. (Admirers of Mario Lanza will note how similar Wunderlich sounds here when he reaches for the high notes.)

Showcasing Wunderlich's achievements in both opera and operetta, this set is the perfect introduction to one of the greatest tenors of them all. If you enjoy this, I'd also recommend his Deutsche Gramophon 5-CD set (simply entitled "Fritz Wunderlich"), which includes a sublime Pearlfishers Duet with Herman Prey and the aforementioned Granada.

5 out of 5 stars German bel canto indeed.......1999-06-13

This three CD set of Wunderlich is a gem. It features one of the most beautiful pure lyric tenor voices of the century at its absolute best. Though Wunderlich sings all the arias, including the Italian and French ones, in German, his innate musical understanding of the composers and the pieces conveys a musical and emotional authenticity rarely matched in other recordings. Listening to these arias, one can understand why Wunderlich's singing is described as "German bel canto": Wunderlich combines the German fine sense of musicianship, musical intelligence, and style with the Italian attributes of purity and evenness of timbre, open throated singing and excuisite legato phrasing. Just listen to the perfect rendition of "Komm holde dame" in the first CD, with its effortless, floating high notes and even bel canto style singing. Compare this with Wunderlich's interpretation of Pinkerton in the duet and aria from Butterfly, with its perfect diction and phrasing, singing that displays a complete understanding of Puccini's melodic line. And, for sheer joy and delight, to feel good about yourself and humanity, listen to the operetta arias of the third CD. This is the greatest recording of operetta arias in the world. Wunderlich loved to sing these songs and brought an enthusiam and flair to these arias that is simply infectious for the listener. If you've never heard Wunderlich, this is your golden opportunity to acquient yourself with one of the greatest voices of the century.

It would be impossible to overstate Abe Schwartz's influence on the development of klezmer music in America. He was a fine violinist and pianist, an excellent composer, an arranger who added modern instruments like saxophones and banjos to the Old World sound, and a bandleader with a nose for talent who helped launch the careers of Dave Tarras and Naftule Branwein, among others. The Klezmer King collects 25 tracks from the 75 or so sides that Schwartz recorded for Columbia between 1917 and 1935. Schwartz was remarkably versatile, and the selections include traditional dance tunes like "Roumanian Doina," Yiddish pop tunes such as "Die Greene Cousine," which was later a hit for Benny Goodman as "My Little Cousin," and sly social commentary like "Der Automobile." Also here are three versions of the old melody "Russian Sher," which were recorded in 1917, 1927, and 1935. Listening to them, you can trace Schwartz's style as it evolves from its European roots to a more American version of klezmer. The sound quality of these rare recordings is outstanding; there are almost no clicks, pops, or hiss to mar the music. The Klezmer King is an essential recording from one of the pioneers of New World klezmer. --Michael Simmons

Abe Schwartz was an American klezmer pioneer who discovered such talents as Dave Tarras and Naftule Brandwein as well as inspiring the contemporary klezmer revival bands. Don't miss this collection of his original recordings.

4 out of 5 stars Old-Time American Roots Klezmer Music.......2004-04-15

Abe Schwartz and his orchestra developed and defined klezmer music in America from the mid-1920s up until the 1940s and early '50s. If the beginning sounds of American roots klezmer music is of interest, this is the CD you want. I find that half-way through, my mind wanders. It sounds too schmaltzy for me. I love Central European and Balkan style music ... this CD has diluted versions of this styling. This CD contains Central/East European "cross over" music that is becoming Americanized. In reality it is not quite either, besides the violin, there is the requiste clarinet, other instruments are saxaphone, tuba, piccolo, alto sax, bass sax, drums, and other percussions. The music occasionally sounds like a Balkan Brass band ... fortunately the longing and nostalgia of the klezmer sound, the Jewish roots are evident in all the tracks. The 'sher', 'doina', and 'hora' are types of dance music played by this famous composer, bandleader, and fiddler. My favorite is "Escorting the Parents of the Bride and Groom Home" ("Fihren Di Mechutonim Aheim-Tanz') which features Naftule Brandwein on the clarinet. His improvisations and glissandos are brilliant. The famous klezmer clarinetist, Dave Tarras, is also featured on many of these recordings. "Hasidic Melodies" ("Ch'sidishe Nigunim") is one of my favorite examples of his playing. His command of the clarinet and the creative musical phrasing is phenomenal. "The Greenhorn Girl Cousin" ("Die Green Couisine") is famous for the music, lyrics, and message which brought to the public's attention the bad working conditions in the sweatshops, the first job of immigrants arriving in the USA. It is a catchy tune with Abe Schwartz featured on the violin and Abraham Moskowitz singing the vocals. Spin-offs of this song were written by many including one by Benny Goodman. Overall, if discovering and investigating early klezmer roots music is your goal, this CD will meet your criteria with highest expectations. Otherwise, give me "The Klezmatics", "The Klezmer Conservatory Band" or any modern klezmer group which expresses the music in a more explosive and exciting manner. For me, the modern sound is much more appealing than the early roots which is on this CD. Erika Borsos (erikab93)

I came to Klezmer music via Izaak Perlmann's "In the Fiddler's House," which is one of my all time favorite CDs. I'm just learning about the genre, via other Amazon reviewers, so have just recently arrived at this and other "Klezmer roots" CDs (Dave Tarras, as another reviewer mentions, is also excellent). It's just exceedingly harmonious, well orchestrated, tightly knit music, transported from the old world to the new. The tradition lives on, and an increasing number of us goyim are coming to appreciate it. Sound quality, these can't compete with modern recordings like those of the Klezmer Conservatory Band, or the Klezmatics, but it will definitely give you an idea of where they learned from. Mazaltov!!

If you've ever heard new groups like the Yiddish Cup Klezmer Band and The Klezmatics and marveled at how they got all those great old tunes, look no further. Abe Schwartz, the Klezmer King is now available on CD. Before this, 78 RPM records these were remastered from was the only place you could hear him.

The Klezmer King album is old, both in sound and style. But keep in mind that clarinet klezmer is more of an American thing. This music is a generation or two removed from the original originals. Songs called Russian Sher and Roumanian Doina indicate that, just like today, wedding musicians from the old country were jamming the hits of the day as well as the "Jewish" stuff.

But it was guys like Schwartz, Dave Tarras and the Musiker Brothers, whom the new wave learned from. But unlike the younger versions, these melodies don't seem to have jazz-like improvisation. They are straight ahead rollickers, heavy on catchy rhythm and melody. There are a total of twenty-five tracks on the album and most are short and fast.

The instruments employed are the violin, played by Schwartz, the clarinet and horns. The beat is so danceable that you forget there's no percussion. That's traditional, because back in the old country, if the klezmorim had any percussion at all it was just a bass drum.

For you Yiddish speakers, The Klezmer King is not all instrumental. There are tracks that start with lively shouts as well as straight singing pieces like Mameniu Liubeniu or the satirical Hurra Far Unzerheld Levine.

Then there's Die Bolbriker Chasseneh, which has Schwartz introducing a bride and groom in between slow music. He raises his voice, half speaking and half singing in rapid-fire Yiddish. Then he gasps out that the couple is now officially married and the band breaks into fast, bouncy jamming. Close your eyes and you can imagine you're one of the guests. That goes for most of the tunes here.

If you didn't know the difference between a bulgar and freilach and nigun before, you better start learning. Abe Schwartz taught long of young folks about what it takes to be a king of klezmer. Companion CDs of Dave Tarras and the Musiker Brothers are available from Legacy Recordings.

    5 out of 5 stars Time warp.......2002-08-11

Listening to the 25 old but timeless cuts on this set of remastered Yiddish greats provides many layers of enjoyment. In hearing these long-forgotten tunes, one enjoys clarinet and violin strains influenced by ancient melodies and traditions. And some will recognize varied renditions of old favorites. The 6th cut, for example, Dovid'l Bazetzt die Kalleh, is engrained into my memory from Jewish Music, a Benedict Silberman recording, circa 1955, of Yiddish orchestrations.

The music is all decidedly Eastern European. The Roumanian Doina, for example, played by Abe Schwartz (violin) and his daughter, strongly resembles the brilliant Rom music generated by the same region.

No wonder. Born in Bucharest, Romania, Abe Schwartz (1881-1963) emigrated to the U.S. with his parents in 1899 and became the most influential composer, fiddler and bandleader to shape and define modern U.S. klezmer groups. He arrived in the musical establishment via an acquaintance from small jobs with David Nodiff, a part-time composer and so-called A&R (for artist and repertoire) man for Columbia Records, who helped bring klezmer and other ethnic musicians to record companies. Nodiff hired Schwartz in 1917 to find new Jewish talent and head up instrumental recording sessions.

This recording provides some of the time and style progression of Yiddish American music from 1917, when Schwartz recorded Russian Scissors for Columbia with the Oriental Orchestra. In 1927, he recorded the same tune again as Russishe Shehr, in a brassier rendition played by his own orchestra. Still a later 1935 version can be heard in Russian Sher National Dance, the 22nd cut, recorded with the Orkestr Novinka. (And that is the most recent recording here.) The musical and stylistic progressions from 1917 and 1918 through 1935 are admirably explained in an accompanying 8-page pamphlet.

This is not the jazzy stuff many will remember from the 1940s and 1950s. It came before the Barry Sisters, before Naftule Brandwein and Dave Tarras. Abe Schwartz was their mentor.

What you get here is a time warp, filled with early 20th century Jewish musical genius. Alyssa A. Lappen

    5 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2006-07-19

A couple years ago, I saw the 2002 Concert in an SACD bin and I decided to pick it up because I really like the SACD format. I was amazed to hear that it was an actual live recording. You don't usually hear clapping and cheering on classical CD's. The really amazing part is all the clapping during the Radetzky March. I was not aware that they show these every year. So I finally got to catch one on TV and I was impressed especially of the scenes of Vienna.

Anyways, I've been slowly picked up the rest of this series. I'll have to say that this one is not bad. I like and dislike that they mostly use STrausses. I like the Strausses because they create some very beautiful music, but I wish they would do some more composers. I also wish they would release more of these on SACD.

    5 out of 5 stars perfect!.......2005-01-22

This recording of the Wiener Philharmoniker's 2003 Concert conducted by Harnoncourt is excellent. This is a traditional and historical occasion. Harnoncourt really knows all-traditional dances (waltz, polka, czardas...) and his orchestra plays with emotion, impressive.

The concert opens with a majestic march,"The Jubilee March for return of Emperor franz Joseph I". After this fast prelude, the famous "Schatzwalzer" (Treasure Waltz) begins. And then there are two intermezzo-polkas : Niko-Polka and Scherz-Polka (especially the last is very interesting). And there is a waltz by brothr Josef Strauss: Delirien-Waltz. Harnoncourt says about Josef: I think, he is may be more romantic than Johann's. Josef paints like Turner, Johann paints like Caspar David Friedrich. And there is a guest-composer in the program of New Year Concert: Carl Maria von Weber and his famous "Invitation to the Dance" (originally for piano) with the succesful orchestration of Berlioz. And there are polkas again: Seconds-Polka and Hellenen-Polka.

At CD 2, begins with the celebratde "Emperor Waltz". This majestic and lovely waltz is one of my favourites. And then, there is brilliant and wonderful polka: Peasants' Polka. I will not say about the surprise of this polka! (But when you listen this, you will just love it!). And there is a unknown but very interesting and amazing galopp by Father Johann: Chinese-Galop.
And then, there is another and more famous guest-composer and very close friend of the "Waltz King": Johannes Brahms and his Hungarian Dances Nos. 5 in G-minor and No. 6 in B-falt major, orchestrated not by Dvorak, but by Friedrich Reichert, who the first orchestrator of these wondreful dances. And these versions discovered new, beacuse these are unpublishe manuscripts. And again a waltz: Coronation Songs. And the last polkas: famous "Light of Heart" and very nervous "Furioso-Polka". And the traditional encores beging with the New Year's Address of Harnoncourt and then, beautifully played "An der schönen Blauen Donau" and Father Johann's "Radetzky March" accompanied by claps the hands of the people, as usual! OK, but why this father Johann's Radetzky March played last and why the last piece doesn't of "the only rival of father" Johann II? Because, THE "FATHER" SAYS THE "LAST WORDS" USUALLY!!

This concert recorded reaaly excellent. I don't think about the critic, "this is not so gripping, if you weren't there". It is really worth-listening, without hesitation at all.

    Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars not so gripping if you weren't there...........2003-04-13

How quickly the world turns! At New Year's, filled with holiday cheer we hoped that our lives would improve. Barely four months later, anxiety about war and disease prevails. Memories of that happier time seem irrelevant. So too does this live recording of the 2003 Vienna New Year's Concert. The annual event is a social occasion, and criticizing the programming of light dance music from the time of Emperor Joseph I ignores the importance of tradition; it's rather like criticizing a 4th of July concert for having too many Sousa marches. Nevertheless, we are left with the equivalent of a 12-course banquet in which every dish is a meringue. Waltz fans, nostalgia buffs and escapists may enjoy this. The rest of us may want something meatier in our musical diet, especially now.

Polkas, Waltzes, Galops and Marches from the Strauss family make up the majority of the programme. Of these, most are by the Waltz King himself, Johann Strauss II. Performing this music, the Vienna Philharmonic should be the greatest orchestra in the world. They do play precisely, with impeccable intonation. The sparkling piccolo and raucous percussion of Johann Strauss I's Chinese Galop are delightful--the highlight of this two CD set. At other times, Nikolaus Harnoncourt's direction is reserved and somewhat emotionless. Warhorses like The Blue Danube and the Emperor Waltz may simply be too familiar to the performers. Not so to the audience-in one piece, apparently anxious to clap, the audience fills the pause before the coda with inappropriate applause. Clearly they enjoyed the event, but it is not as certain that we will be as thrilled with the recorded audio.

4 out of 5 stars Harnoncourt never boring.......2003-03-20

Another fine Vienna New Years concert with a few new twists. The Weber Invitation to the Dance was a welcome addition, although it almost sounded out of place. However, the Brahms Hungarian Dances sounded perfectly appropriate and it is amazing they have never been programmed for these concerts before now. As always, Harnoncourt provides an interesting point of view. I was excited to see the Emperor Waltz for the first time in several years, and of course the familiar Blue Danube and Radetzky. The other novelties are delightful. I was personally a bit disappointed with the recording from a sound quality perspective. I don't think the recording is up to par with Harnoncourt's other New Year's recording in 2001, or with Ozawa's recording in 2002. Both of those were afforded better sound in my opinion. The sound is not as immediate here, but it is a marginal complaint in any case. Of course, the VPO are unsurpassed in this music and they play beautifully. It is an excellent value too as there are two discs for the price of one.

5 out of 5 stars Yet Another Splendid VPO New Year's Concert From Harnoncourt.......2003-02-16

Once more the Vienna Philharmonic has made an inspired choice as its conductor for its annual New Year's Concert by choosing Nikolaus Harnoncourt again. The splendid musicologist/conductor offers a rather engaging selection of obscure works by the Strauss family coupled with such standard fare as the Emperor Waltz and the Blue Danube waltz, a brilliant Hector Berlioz orchestration of Carl Maria von Weber's Invitation to the Dance, and two of Johannes Brahms's Hungarian Dances. Of historical note this is the first time that works composed by Johann Strauss Sr., Johann Strauss Jr. and Josef Strauss have been performed during the same New Year's Concert program. Needless to say, the Vienna Philharmonic plays with ample enthusiasm for him, yielding some of the best performances I've heard at a New Year's Day Concert. The liner notes are indeed a celebration of Harnoncourt's longstanding ties to the orchestra and are well worth reading. And of course, the sound quality is splendid, though perhaps not nearly as fine as Harnoncourt's previous New Year's Concert recording with Teldec. Still, this two CD set will be sought after by fans of Nikolaus Harnoncourt, the Strauss family, and the Vienna Philharmonic.

An essential collection for libraries and archives. Many of these shows have never been recorded in any other format but these light opera company medleys of "vocal gems." These antique 78-RPM discs are the predecessors of today's original cast recordings.

The years covered in this set show how European style operettas wer slowly giving way to a more jazz-oriented American musical comedy style. Victor Herbert, Jerome Kern, and Sigmund Romberg (among others) were setting the stage for the modern American musical.

Listeners should be aware that all the recordings in this set date from the "acoustic" period of recording and have limited range. The metal horns that collected the sound and cut it into wax discs were not ideal for soloists and worked best with brass and percussion. The shellac surfaces of the pressed records had a hissing sound and the steel needles often distorted the music. The few pressings that have survived in playable condition are gathered here, but be aware these are recordings nearly 100 years old!

Those I haven't daunted are in for a treat, for once you get past the antique sound you discover a wealth or musical material and a glimpse into a Broadway very different from what it would eventually become.
