During the "folk music-scare" of the early 1960s, a bunch of white middle-class youths with names like the Greenbriar Boys and the Even Dozen Jug Band discovered the mountain music of the Stanley Brothers, Skillet Lickers, and Uncle Dave Macon and set about introducing it to the country's college kids. Four decades later, the members of OCMS fit the profile of those early revivalists, yet if anything they have tapped deeper into the primal elements of an American art form. As demonstrated on their debut, they have assimilated not just the sound--banjos, harmonicas, acoustic guitar and bass--but more importantly the haunting spirit of music that was made to keep hard times at bay. How else to explain their ability to take a well-worn chestnut like "CC Rider" and infuse it with an energy that reveals once again why it is a classic? Not content to live completely in the past, they wrote "Big Time in the Jungle," which, though it is about Vietnam, could easily be transposed to 2004's desert conflicts. Kindred spirit and producer David Rawlings (Gillian Welch's longtime collaborator) has kept their energy intact, but one can only wonder what sort of magic they must deliver live. --Michael RossCustomer Reviews:

A concept album about gigantic household appliances taking over the world? No such luck. As the images of Hank Williams, Bob Dylan and Sun-era Elvis floating in the background might indicate, this Nashville band is strictly old school, singing about unemployed riverboat workers, covering Woody Guthrie and plucking banjos like there was no tomorrow. Produced by David Rawlings, Big Iron World boasts the expected barnstormers ("Cocaine Habit") and late-night meditations ("God's Got It") alongside a handful of folkie sing-a-longs ("Down Home Girl") and a thoroughly unexpected reference to Karl Rove. And where else are you going to hear songstress Gillian Welch banging away on the drums? --Aidin VaziriCustomer Reviews:

There are a few songs on the album that I still don't love: Down Home Girl has a pretty monotone, repetitive sound; Union Maid is too obviously a throw-back; and Bobcat Tracks is just hokey.
Now that I got my complaints out, though, what a great album. My Good Gal is reminiscent of my favorite Louvin Brothers song (Knoxville Girl); New Virginia Creeper demands dancing; and I Hear Them All is up there with the best of American folk political protest songs. Just a great time, great musicians, and I wish they'd come play live in New England.

Top notch.......2007-06-12

Just kidding...
But I'm not kidding at how deeply you'll be able to go into meditation with the consistent use of these CDs. Some people make the mistake of "tacking" meditation on their "to do" list. Meditation is never something one does; meditation is something you become. In meditation, you don't try to become centered and peaceful, you realize that within yourself there is already a centered place and all you have to do is let yourself go there. In truth, this is where we all came from and all meditation does is reawaken within us something that we have misplaced in our "busy-ness".
I know this review might sound a little metaphysical but think about it, why do you want to meditate, anyway? It's because at some level, you do want to rise above the physical...you do want to find peace and inner bliss and I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but you ain't gonna find peace in the world until you find it within yourself...you're not going to find Heaven in a religion until you awaken from the dream that Heaven is right where you are. There is nothing outside of you and meditation puts you in touch with that certain "something" that is speaking from the depths of your being and desires to resurface Itself in you and through you.
This CD will help you wipe the sleep from your eyes, it will help you part the clouds of doubt, and wash away the decay that we may have let accumulate upon our minds, our hearts, and our spirits.
So, if you have to "do" anything today, do this: order this CD and start to realize with real eyes see what an incredible journey you are already on.
Peace and Blessings

Album Description
Earning Their White Stripes. "But what I'm listening to most of the time at present is an album called Good For What Ails You, which is an album of songs that people used to listen to at medicine shows all over the States. It's quite an interesting album and I think that people would be well advised to pick it up." Jack White - Sunday Mail (Australia) Dec 18, 2005Five Stars. Groundbreaking. "Fans of Nick Tosches' Where Dead Voices Gather will lap up this extraordinary snapshot of an America that is still shrouded in shadow. Good For What Ails You supplants the Harry Smith collections by surveying the people's music of the day, some of which sounds like nothing you have heard before." Jon Savage - MOJO Dec 2005
Before motion pictures, before radio, before television, the traveling Medicine Shows brought entertainment to America! Flamboyant pitch doctors roamed the land, hawking their tonics, elixirs, and miracle cures, and with them came a host of singers, dancers, comedians, banjo pickers, blues shouters, jug blowers, string ticklers, and minstrel men. The shows died out by mid-20th century, but not before a handful of seasoned veterans left their musical legacy on phonograph records. Here are classic performances by such colorful names as Pink Anderson, Daddy Stovepipe, Gid Tanner, Blind Sammie, Bogus Ben Covington, Fiddlin' John Carson, Banjo Joe, Shorty Godwin, Beans Hambone, Emmett Miller & His Georgia Crackers, the Three Tobacco Tags, and many more!

You will feel so much better.......2007-01-25
But at least we can listen to the music. I've only received this the other day and I've not taken it out of the player, it goes to work with me and takes me home again, it plays in the background when I'm busy about the house. Yes some of the sound quality is hissy, but they are old recordings and besides I would rather hear it like that, it adds to the feel. These are happy songs, even when they are talking about slashing someones throat. If you looking at this you obviously have an interest in this style of music and you would be doing yourself a favour by purchasing this wonderful collection. You get 2 CD's and a wonderful booklet that tells you a little history of the genre and pictures of some the the performers on the CD's as well as a little history on each of the songs.
The right medicine for the blahs! Outstanding fun!.......2006-10-23
Brings Back Memories to the Old (and Young)!.......2006-08-28
I lent the cd's to my father, and they brought back fond memories of his childhood in western OK when the medicine shows would come to town and set up on the square. Everyone would attend the "show" and listen to the music, sales pitches, and go home with something! He truly enjoyed the cd's, also.
Even if medicine shows are new to you, the music is worth the time to listen. Lot's of fun, interesting lyrics, and you might even hear something that has come back again!?

music that speaks to your soul..............2005-10-14
There is a wonderful earthy quality to this music. The first track, "Medicine Man," makes it all the more evident. He sounds like he is somewhere in the rainforest, communing with the trees, and takes on the journey with him. It is both melodious and syncopated. "Baby" is a cautionary song about how children will follow the route of their adult role models, so BE CAREFUL! It gives a whole new meaning to the saying "Do as I say, not as I do." Overall, this is just a fabulous cross section of songs and styles. The title song from the AIDS documentary, "Common Threads," (track #5) is also featured on her. You would have to be made of ice not to shed a tear--it is both tender and out of this world. It's as though he is singing to the angels......Another track worth mentioning is the beautiful, very gospel-based "Discipline" (track #7). On this song, he teams up with his opera-trained, world-reknown father to sing with him, in his warm bass. It's awesome!!!!! You can see where he got his musical sensibility.
You are going to love this album, and the messages it conveys about personal accountability, responsibility and spirituality.
