During the "folk music-scare" of the early 1960s, a bunch of white middle-class youths with names like the Greenbriar Boys and the Even Dozen Jug Band discovered the mountain music of the Stanley Brothers, Skillet Lickers, and Uncle Dave Macon and set about introducing it to the country's college kids. Four decades later, the members of OCMS fit the profile of those early revivalists, yet if anything they have tapped deeper into the primal elements of an American art form. As demonstrated on their debut, they have assimilated not just the sound--banjos, harmonicas, acoustic guitar and bass--but more importantly the haunting spirit of music that was made to keep hard times at bay. How else to explain their ability to take a well-worn chestnut like "CC Rider" and infuse it with an energy that reveals once again why it is a classic? Not content to live completely in the past, they wrote "Big Time in the Jungle," which, though it is about Vietnam, could easily be transposed to 2004's desert conflicts. Kindred spirit and producer David Rawlings (Gillian Welch's longtime collaborator) has kept their energy intact, but one can only wonder what sort of magic they must deliver live. --Michael Ross

3 out of 5 stars Old Crow Medicine Show.......2007-06-12

These guys are too young to sound like old hillbilies. I was looking for a little bit more current genre.

5 out of 5 stars OCMS.......2007-03-28

These are very talented young men, their voices, their visions. With this combination of traditional and self-written music, Old Crow has given us a lively and poignant sense of life. And did I mention that they have talent? Check the insert; see who is playing which instrument.
If you have the opportunity to see these guys perform live, go. They are a gift.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-01-16

Great CD. I love most of the songs. One or two are a bit too blue grassy. Overall great CD good pick up.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-01-09

Old Crow Medicine Show is awesome. I love all the songs on the CD. Especially wagon wheel. That has to be my fav. Keep on rockin' guys!!

5 out of 5 stars Wagon Wheel.......2006-11-07

i just wanted to clear this up as a review mentioned that wagon wheel is a rip-off of a dylan tune. well... it's a poor assumption. the chorus from wagon wheel was written by dylan for the movie "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid" for which they gave Dylan writing credit. The chords were used for the rest of the song [which is not a crime considering that the progression used (1 5 6 4) is VERY common and is used in a countless number of songs including "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" by Dylan himself] and the rest of the song's lyrics were written by OCMS with a different melody. if it was a rip-off, they wouldn't have purposely given Dylan some credit for the song. In fact, if you look in the album sleeve it gives Dylan FULL credit for the song. So... if you believe Wagon Wheel is a rip-off, i don't think you really KNOW what a RIP-OFF is.

A concept album about gigantic household appliances taking over the world? No such luck. As the images of Hank Williams, Bob Dylan and Sun-era Elvis floating in the background might indicate, this Nashville band is strictly old school, singing about unemployed riverboat workers, covering Woody Guthrie and plucking banjos like there was no tomorrow. Produced by David Rawlings, Big Iron World boasts the expected barnstormers ("Cocaine Habit") and late-night meditations ("God's Got It") alongside a handful of folkie sing-a-longs ("Down Home Girl") and a thoroughly unexpected reference to Karl Rove. And where else are you going to hear songstress Gillian Welch banging away on the drums? --Aidin Vaziri

5 out of 5 stars This aging fanboy..........2007-06-25

loves Old Crow Medicine Show, and this album is another winning entry! "I Hear Them All" is worth the price of admission by itself, but there are other choice bits; "Cocaine Habit" "Down Home Girl" and "My Good Gal" stand out, as well as the tongue-in-cheek (I think ;) "New Virginia Creeper".

4 out of 5 stars Cool Beans.......2007-06-08

I really have enjoyed this CD. The music is invigorating and the lyrics are funny. I have just ordered another one to send to my son-in-law!

Good god, these guys are overrated. Hipster old time music at its worst. They sure would look good in a Details magazine spread, though...

5 out of 5 stars love it.......2007-04-01

i love OCMS and there music keeps getting better and better. if you love their last album, buy this one.

4 out of 5 stars It's been growing on me.......2007-02-21

Having only really listened to the most recent previous album, I didn't know what to think of Big Iron World at first; it seemed quite a bit more bluesy than O.C.M.S., and I wasn't sure the change was for the better. After a dozen or so times through, though, I've got to say, they've got an uncanny ability to bring even a reluctant audience around.

There are a few songs on the album that I still don't love: Down Home Girl has a pretty monotone, repetitive sound; Union Maid is too obviously a throw-back; and Bobcat Tracks is just hokey.

Now that I got my complaints out, though, what a great album. My Good Gal is reminiscent of my favorite Louvin Brothers song (Knoxville Girl); New Virginia Creeper demands dancing; and I Hear Them All is up there with the best of American folk political protest songs. Just a great time, great musicians, and I wish they'd come play live in New England.

5 out of 5 stars Great meditation CD.......2007-03-12

This is my new "go-to" CD for meditation. I'm a fan of vibrational music for meditation, but sometimes the vibrational CD's can get repetitive and boring. This CD has multiple tracks with variety in the music, but with calming vibrationals in the background. Good for meditation, guided imagery, yoga, or great background music for reading.

5 out of 5 stars Sound Medicine: Music for Healing.......2007-01-04

Following a suggestion from Candace B. Pert, Ph.D. found in her book "Molecules of Emotion," I decided to look for a relaxation CD to help me fall asleep. Because I also suffer from migraines, the word "healing" in the title of this CD intrigued me. It's still hard to believe, but for the past three months it puts me to sleep so quickly that I've never heard the end of the CD! And if I should wake up in the middle of the night I just turn it on again and fall right back asleep. Amazing!

4 out of 5 stars A Great Comp Of Dr. Hook Songs Capitol........2007-03-03

Well in beginning i bought this album for the songs: Cover Of The Rolling Stone & When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman. But as soon i popped in this disc i just fell in love with whole thing. the and more to title of the album impiles the fact that there are few songs tacked on for your listening pleasure, i must say my favorite tracks are: I Could'nt Believe, A Little Bit More. Sexy Eyes & Sharing The Night Together( Are Definitely Disco Influnced) but still likeable. Radio should've may the top ten along with Cover Of The Rolling Stone, Years From Now. Brings tears almost, it's tender ballad. This album is one that you'll want to dance to because there are slow and fast tunes. when i listening to this album i think of palm trees and the sun.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-01-22

Not what I was hoping for. This album does not include several of his best songs. Definitely not his "greatest hits".

4 out of 5 stars Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show-- Greatest Hits (And More) .......2007-01-18

Dr. Hook always brings back memories of my childhood. Their music is real the lyrics tell a story and it is good music to listen to after a hard days of work in your own little space. Great stuff !!!!

5 out of 5 stars My opinion.......2007-01-10

I was thrilled to find this recording. I had been looking for one particular song by Dr. Hook for years and didn't know the name of it. I was so greatly surprised to find it on this albumn. It is Love Me A Little Bit More. It is a very special song to me and am thrilled to have it. I would recomend this albumn to any one that loves Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show.

5 out of 5 stars I'm Hooked.......2006-09-02

Dr Hook was and still remains one of the most underated groups to emerge during the Seventies. You really had to be lucky to see them in concert but they're somewhat forgotton now. The songs on this album are all classics and will remain that way to all seventies music lovers out there. Good quiet time music is at a premium these days and " A Little Bit More " is should always be played with romance in the air. Great album!!! Two thumbs up!!!

Music for Both Sides of the Brain By combining soothing music with sophisticated sound technology, Music for Brainwave Massage has been shown to effect profound changes in brainwave patterns and states of consciousness-changes discernable on brain mapping EEG equipment. Throughout the flowing, peaceful melodies, Dr. Thompson has incorporated specific audio signals to create a sympathetic response in the two hemispheres of the brain. This coordination of right and left brains in associated with deep relaxation, stress reduction, creativity, insight, and enhanced problem solving.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Top notch.......2007-06-12

The science of brainwave entrainment is solid. This is a solid recording that provides music of a calming and pleasant nature.

5 out of 5 stars In Sight.......2007-04-11

Since consciously using "the Secret", or if you prefer, the Law of Attraction, I have landed a gig as a meditation facilitator on Wednesday nights at the church that I belong to. I often use Jeffrey Thomson's CDs for background music. I find that even without headphones, people find it easier to come to center and relax more deeply than with the other music I tried...but come to think of it, I was playing Led Zeppelin, Blue Oyster Cult, and Deep Purple...

Just kidding...

But I'm not kidding at how deeply you'll be able to go into meditation with the consistent use of these CDs. Some people make the mistake of "tacking" meditation on their "to do" list. Meditation is never something one does; meditation is something you become. In meditation, you don't try to become centered and peaceful, you realize that within yourself there is already a centered place and all you have to do is let yourself go there. In truth, this is where we all came from and all meditation does is reawaken within us something that we have misplaced in our "busy-ness".

I know this review might sound a little metaphysical but think about it, why do you want to meditate, anyway? It's because at some level, you do want to rise above the physical...you do want to find peace and inner bliss and I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but you ain't gonna find peace in the world until you find it within yourself...you're not going to find Heaven in a religion until you awaken from the dream that Heaven is right where you are. There is nothing outside of you and meditation puts you in touch with that certain "something" that is speaking from the depths of your being and desires to resurface Itself in you and through you.

This CD will help you wipe the sleep from your eyes, it will help you part the clouds of doubt, and wash away the decay that we may have let accumulate upon our minds, our hearts, and our spirits.

So, if you have to "do" anything today, do this: order this CD and start to realize with real eyes see what an incredible journey you are already on.

Peace and Blessings

5 out of 5 stars Very Relaxing.......2007-03-18

This is a great CD to pop into your CD player when you have to study or concentrate on a task. It's very relaxing yet unobtrusive. I feel like it helps me concentrate better. Definitely worth the purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awesome!.......2007-01-26

This is amazing! I can truly feel it working from side to side in my brain (you must use headphone, of course, for such profound results). This was so good, I gave mine to my brother; now I have to buy another for myself because I don't want to be without it!

5 out of 5 stars Sound Medicine: Brainwave Massage.......2007-01-12

This is a great CD. I have used this CD and others by Dr. Thompson to decrease stress, help me relax, help me feel peaceful and help me fall asleep. Other brainwave CDs are energizing. I created a whole class topic after listening to a "Insight and Intuition" CD, and the class was good, if I say so myself. These CDs are better than drugs!

Album Description

Earning Their White Stripes. "But what I'm listening to most of the time at present is an album called Good For What Ails You, which is an album of songs that people used to listen to at medicine shows all over the States. It's quite an interesting album and I think that people would be well advised to pick it up." Jack White - Sunday Mail (Australia) Dec 18, 2005

Five Stars. Groundbreaking. "Fans of Nick Tosches' Where Dead Voices Gather will lap up this extraordinary snapshot of an America that is still shrouded in shadow. Good For What Ails You supplants the Harry Smith collections by surveying the people's music of the day, some of which sounds like nothing you have heard before." Jon Savage - MOJO Dec 2005

Before motion pictures, before radio, before television, the traveling Medicine Shows brought entertainment to America! Flamboyant pitch doctors roamed the land, hawking their tonics, elixirs, and miracle cures, and with them came a host of singers, dancers, comedians, banjo pickers, blues shouters, jug blowers, string ticklers, and minstrel men. The shows died out by mid-20th century, but not before a handful of seasoned veterans left their musical legacy on phonograph records. Here are classic performances by such colorful names as Pink Anderson, Daddy Stovepipe, Gid Tanner, Blind Sammie, Bogus Ben Covington, Fiddlin' John Carson, Banjo Joe, Shorty Godwin, Beans Hambone, Emmett Miller & His Georgia Crackers, the Three Tobacco Tags, and many more!

This gave us 50 tracks of original music. Along with it you get a nice booklet that tells the history of the medicine shows and individual descriptions of each track and it's performers.

5 out of 5 stars You will feel so much better.......2007-01-25

You just can't imagine what the life of a performer on the road in the 20, 30's (or earlier) must have been like. The ups of course was the freedom, and the fun at times. The downs include never knowing what was around the corner, the cold (or heat), some of the boarding houses I would imagine would have been dreadful amongst many others.

But at least we can listen to the music. I've only received this the other day and I've not taken it out of the player, it goes to work with me and takes me home again, it plays in the background when I'm busy about the house. Yes some of the sound quality is hissy, but they are old recordings and besides I would rather hear it like that, it adds to the feel. These are happy songs, even when they are talking about slashing someones throat. If you looking at this you obviously have an interest in this style of music and you would be doing yourself a favour by purchasing this wonderful collection. You get 2 CD's and a wonderful booklet that tells you a little history of the genre and pictures of some the the performers on the CD's as well as a little history on each of the songs.

5 out of 5 stars The right medicine for the blahs! Outstanding fun!.......2006-10-23

Step right up..ladies and gentlemen...Are you feeling blah listening to those same old CD's you've had for the last several years? Does today's music leave you cold? Well, you've come to the right place. Restore your enthusiasm...bring back the fun, with 50 recordings from the golden age of medicine shows. Guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Many of these fine artists are obscure names to most people of this generation...but alas...like an old ancient Indian cure...this box set will bring you back to life. Yes friends and neighbors...it also comes with a beautiful full-color booklet with all the songs, dates and stories of old. Uh..excuse me son, don't crowd the stage. IT'S A PANACEA FOR ALL BORING AILMENTS! Yes and considering how old these gems are (1925-36) they are all in remarkable shape...and your sense of humor will be too. So pick one up today. It;s more fun than a brand new Victrola!

5 out of 5 stars Brings Back Memories to the Old (and Young)!.......2006-08-28

'Good For What Ails You' is a great set of cd's with old songs that were sung at old medicine shows. I remember some of those songs from records and radio programs from my childhood - songs that I had totally forgotten!

I lent the cd's to my father, and they brought back fond memories of his childhood in western OK when the medicine shows would come to town and set up on the square. Everyone would attend the "show" and listen to the music, sales pitches, and go home with something! He truly enjoyed the cd's, also.

Even if medicine shows are new to you, the music is worth the time to listen. Lot's of fun, interesting lyrics, and you might even hear something that has come back again!?

5 out of 5 stars Priceless anthology.......2006-07-05

This element of American history should never be forgotten, and this anthology ensures that it won't. The accompanying booklet is a textbook of fascinating anecdotes and photographs, and it even includes a small, helpful insert of "spelling errata" to guide the reader through the language of the time. The music itself transports the listener to a time that seems like ancient history, populated by snake oil salesmen who employed fast-picking, fast-talking one-man bands to make their product more appealing to the desperately poor. But this collection also reminds us that times haven't changed all that much since those days of the Great Depression. After all, when was the last time you heard a trendy, catchy song in a commercial trying to sell you something as basic as toothpaste?

5 out of 5 stars The best driving/chill out music.......2007-04-24

The more I listen to this album, the more I love it.
Copeland's vocals and instrumentation are powerful and unique. There is a song on this cd to suit my every mood.
"When Finally Set Free" is my personal favorite, but "Priceless" and "Brightest" are amazing as well. I consider it to be a must have indie album.

5 out of 5 stars the height.......2007-02-21

This is probably in my point of view the best copeland album so far. An amazing collection of songs filled with love, sorrow, regret and sadness, thought they are so perfectly created they can make you feel both happy and sad. but with Aaron Marsh's voice nothing gets bad. Most of the songs from this album was written by Aaron when someone he loved was sick, so most of the songs are for that person and you can really hear his honesty in them.

a true masterpiece

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2006-12-22

Just like THis Providence's first album after changing their name from "The Sunday Best", this album has every song that is a masterpiece of songwriting. Songs like "Walking Downtown" is an upbeat song with faster rhythms. "Coffee" is jsut as smooth as a 40 oz. cup of coffee poured with 55 gallons of vanilla cream, refined with melted caramel and cocoa. That's how smooth it is. "Priceless" actually labels this CD as just what it is: PRICELESS. Another good song is. "There Cannot be a Close Second" Faster but slow rhythms make the perfect mix for a song. Just get thtis CD, for whatever price. You won't be disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars Suprised at how boring it was............2006-06-05

If you want to hear a talented band that actually has lyrics that are poignant without being cliched, go listen to Muse. Far more diverse, and the most talent I've ever seen packed into three guys. Go listen to Muse and then tell me the guy in this band is a good singer.... yeah, right....

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, Smart, Beautiful.......2006-04-19

The amazingness and uniquness/brilliance of this album can be compared to something like Sunny Day Real Estate. It's just that good, and it's a work of pure genius, the lyrics themselves, while not abstract, are very touching and incredible.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very calming and relaxing drumming.......2007-05-08

This is a very nice CD when I put it in to play my whole house relaxed and clamed down and just listened very nice. The drumming is fantatsic, but if you do not like native american flutes not a CD for you in some parts of the CD the flutes are very loud. But I really enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Drum Medicine.......2007-01-12

I really enjoy both CD's Sacred Spirit Drums and Drum Medicine. I live in an area of very little resource for this type of purchase- I was very happy to find what I wanted online- also very glad to be able to listen before I purchased- would not have bought them without that. Service was the best- shipping was also very good.. I will consider this type of purchase again when needed.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Drum CD.......2006-07-13

This CD is awesome I have it in my car now and that is all I play.

5 out of 5 stars Drum Medicine rocks........2006-03-11

This is the best cd for playing along with drums or dancing up a storm.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible - can this be the work of two white men?????.......2005-09-01

You have to listen to this CD to believe it. I hear the Native American flute, drums .... it's one incredible CD. I bought it to learn to drum but enjoy listening to it just for relaxation, trance states, etc. This is superb!

4 out of 5 stars Good For Whatever Ails You.......2007-03-16

This is just a first-rate CD through and through. Sweet In The Morning - man, I love that song. Not a bad song on this CD. McFerrin is just super talented and his voice is like a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day. He doesn't need lyrics; he just opens his mouth and the most incredibly beautiful sounds emerge. I love it!

3 out of 5 stars Perfect McFerrin.......2007-01-12

Not the type of CD that makes me stop what I'm doing and listen, but the sort that invokes that comfortable "at peace" feeling. It's more "produced" that other McFerrin CD's that I've heard, but very well done. If you like what Bobby McFerrin has done in the past, I'm sure you'll appreciate this work.

I purchased it to study his treatment of the 23rd Psalm which is first rate work.

Recorded at Skywalker Ranch so the sound quality is sterling - a real treat to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful voice and harmonies.......2006-07-05

I bought this album to dance to a song I had sung in a choir once....Psalm 23. This is one of the most beautiful songs to sing and it blew me away. Dancing to this was just as wonderful...the music really touched people. As it turns out the other pieces are also worth listening to, but track #12 is worth the price alone!

5 out of 5 stars Quality and Quantity.......2005-10-21

It shocks me that these songs didn't get more air time when this album came out.

*Distilled Talent Embodied* What an artist!
If you have a great stereo, get this album and you'll remember why you spent a fortune on Hi-Fi. Brilliantly mastered.

5 out of 5 stars music that speaks to your soul..............2005-10-14

We were so blessed that Bobby McFerrin followed his true calling as a phenomenal singer, songwriter and performer. McFerrin has the uncanny ability to transform his voice (and body) into an entire orchestra. It is rare that someone can do tonal singing, anyway, (that's singing two notes at the same time) but is even more rare if they make it sound smooth! It is on this album, that he began to explore to the depth of his gift--going the Enya route and dubbing his voice numerous times to create an entire ensemble of Bobbys, singing melody and harmony.

There is a wonderful earthy quality to this music. The first track, "Medicine Man," makes it all the more evident. He sounds like he is somewhere in the rainforest, communing with the trees, and takes on the journey with him. It is both melodious and syncopated. "Baby" is a cautionary song about how children will follow the route of their adult role models, so BE CAREFUL! It gives a whole new meaning to the saying "Do as I say, not as I do." Overall, this is just a fabulous cross section of songs and styles. The title song from the AIDS documentary, "Common Threads," (track #5) is also featured on her. You would have to be made of ice not to shed a tear--it is both tender and out of this world. It's as though he is singing to the angels......Another track worth mentioning is the beautiful, very gospel-based "Discipline" (track #7). On this song, he teams up with his opera-trained, world-reknown father to sing with him, in his warm bass. It's awesome!!!!! You can see where he got his musical sensibility.

You are going to love this album, and the messages it conveys about personal accountability, responsibility and spirituality.
