Album Description
The band burst onto the scene with the uber-catchy dance-pop-rock of "Snakes On A Plane (Bring It)" from the movie's soundtrack. This is their debut full-length. Produced by S*A*M, a.k.a. Sam Hollander (Method Man, The Sounds, Gym Class Heroes) and Sluggo, the alter ego of renowned session bassist Dave Katz (Roger Daltrey). Features special guests, such as members of Fall Out Boy, The Academy Is..., Gym Class Heroes, The Sounds, and 80's dance/pop group The Cover Girls.Customer Reviews:

To quote her fellow Irishman, poet William Butler Yeats, when Sinead O'Connor's debut, The Lion and the Cobra, was released, a terrible beauty was born. O'Connor has a haunting voice as dark as the Irish bogs, and her unwavering delivery simultaneously inflames and chills. She sings in two ranges: her soprano ("Never Get Old," "Jackie") is a nearly monastic chant that's angular and breathy like a pan flute or a tin whistle, while her alto, reigning in "I Want Your (Hands on Me)" and "Mandinka," is a suspended, forceful spoken-word tone that never quite yells. By switching back and forth between these two vocal modes, she yanks the listener into her turmoil, giving you no choice but to empathize. She was only 20 years old during this recording, and her difficult relationships with lovers, motherhood, her parents, and the Catholic Church were traumatic and fresh. But rather than mellow with maturity, she gained notoriety with publicly unfavorable political antics that would accompany and often overshadow her equally astounding follow-up, I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got. --Beth BessmerCustomer Reviews:
This Is Originality!.......2007-04-13
The album opens with the soft "Jackie" which crescendoes into the loud, fast and extremely catchy "Mandinka". Both these songs are winners and together provide a great opening into the CD. Just as the CD starts strong, it maintains depth and demands attention until "Drink Before The War". Although this is a strong song on it's own, it just feels like more of the same at the end of the album. "Troy" sounds like a much stronger version of this song and it could easily have been replaced by something catchier. "Just Call Me Joe" fades into the background due to O'Connor's soft singing and the album ends on a good note, instead of an excellent one. These last two songs are the fault with an otherwise stunning debut. "Just Like U Said It Would B" is one of the most imaginative songs I've ever heard and "Jerusalem" maintains an appropriate dramatic and spooky atmosphere throughout.
The album, which is considered a classic by some, is definately worth a listen. O'Connor is truly different to the generic artists that can be heard playing on the radio and this is possibly her finest work. The instruments are simple on the album, usually keeping to drums, giutars and maybe synthasisers. The instrument of distinction, however, is O'Connor's voice. Hopefully one day soon she'll release an album as good as this again.

Lion and the Cobra.......2007-01-06
It's the only one of her albums I've ever felt I wanted to buy, & got the cd to finally replace the vinyl album I've been playing for years!
Still just too good.......2006-11-18
To this day, this is one of those albums for me. As with Tori Amos's "Little Earthquakes" many years later, I was not entirely prepared for this particular debut. It simply showed up and said, "Will you be my friend, or would you prefer to take a hike?" The choice was not difficult.
I wrote in my review of her second album that I consider it even better than the first, and that's true, and the only problem with that argument is that the second album doesn't contain "Jackie" or "Mandinka" or the breathtaking "Troy." This one does.
One of my Top 10 Albums ever!!!.......2006-11-02
Ok, the prelude is over ....... GASP! The tracks on the album were at the time and indeed still are uniquely different. I love the sampling with Gaelic on 'Never Get Old' as well as the beautiful lyrics - "young man in a quiet place". 'Jerusalem' and 'Jackie' are fantastic for the vocals alone and 'Troy' is my all time favourite 'angry breaking up with someone' tune.
Yeah, the album is nearly twenty years old, but yet to be equalled. Not many men like Sinead O' Connor, and neither seemingly do many women and strangely enough for the same reasons. Few people it seems like a woman who stands up for herself and believes in what she does. Ok, so I'm biased, but try it out before you disregard it out of hand.
The best.......2006-09-15
At first I thought The Lion and the Cobra was OK. In particular, I enjoyed the catchy sound of I Want Your (Hands On Me).
I Want Your is now easily my least favorite song on this CD.
Jackie, Jerusalem, Just Like U Said It Would B, and Drink Before the War are among the best songs of all time by anyone.
Troy is even better.
The more I listen to other music, the better this album gets.
I consider Sinead to be the greatest musical artist of all time, as much as it pains me to put her ahead of the Smashing Pumpkins. Sinead continued to do a lot of extraordinary music, including You Cause As Much Sorrow, The Last Day of Our Acquaintance, Success Has Made A Failure of Our Home, Rising Sun, many others, and yes, Nothing Compares 2 U.
But this remains the best collection of her raw, passionate, beautiful music.
This is the best album of all time, and deserves critical listening by everyone.

Essential Otis Collection.......2007-04-05
I Can't Quit You Baby, Three Times A Fool, Groaning The Blues, and many others remind you why he's been such an influential guitarist, and why people like Eric Clapton love him work.
This is a collection worth owning for the blues guitar fan.
Music good, sound ok.......2007-01-07
These recordings were made 50 years ago and dont sound bad by any means, but thats why it got 4 stars only. I realize they may not have had too many resources to use recourding these tracks back in 1956, but this was probably the fault of the engineer. Distorted guitar can work if thats what youre going for, but when the vocals are distorting then its time to turn down the level! Otis Rush sounds great here though...I cant recommend something else that sounds better - so go ahead and pick this up. Dont expect super high fidelity though.
Every review here is 5 stars .......2004-08-11

Magnificent.......2003-11-29
That song was penned by Willie Dixon, as are several of these late-50s singles which Rush recorded for Eli Toscano's Cobra label, but Rush was a more than able composer himself, and he is the man behind some of the best songs on this CD, including "All Your Love (I Miss Loving)", "Three Times A Fool" and "Keep On Loving Me Baby"; superb, sophisticated blues tunes which often eclipse Dixon's.
Otis Rush' brand of blues is less rough and boisterous than the music of Howlin' Wolf, but not as polished as that of B.B. King, and he was a major source of inspiration to Stevie Ray Vaughan, who named his band after Rush's song "Double Trouble", and did a great rendition of "All Your Love".
His intense vocals and stinging lead guitar playing is reminicent of Buddy Guy and Magic Sam, and if talent was everything and luck and timing never mattered, Otis Rush would currently be hailed as the reigning king of Chicago blues.
Alternating between smouldering slow blues and swinging up-tempo numbers, this is one of the truly essential albums in any blues collection. If Rush had never recorded another note, his reputation would be intact based solely on these eight singles.

The Rip Chords were essentially a false front behind which lurked future Beach Boy Bruce Johnston and Byrds/Paul Revere & The Raiders producer Terry Melcher. "Hey Little Cobra," a wimpier-than-usual hotrod record that benefits from Johnston and Melcher's full-bodied vocals, was their first big hit, generating a first album filled with unnecessary Beach Boys/Jan & Dean covers (four of 'em, plus an instrumental that basically rips off "Little Deuce Coupe") and a pretty good Melcher/Johnston, Spector-in-drag car tune, "Trophy Machine."Much more intriguing is their guitar-heavy non-automotive material. "Here I Stand," their first single, updates Wade Flemons's 1959 Chicago R&B cha-cha with piercing, fruity falsetto and some vicious, loud guitar. "The Queen," which sadly isn't about a hotrodding RuPaul--she's a stuck-up Sting Ray driver--is vintage Dion goosed by queasy heights of falsetto. "Gone" sounds like the Isley Brothers' "Shout" with more tuff guitar, while "Ding Dong" is a doo-wop anticipation of "I Fought the Law." Post-album single/bonus track "Don't Be Scared" combines the Beach Boys' "Little Honda" and "Dance Dance Dance" with heavy fuzz. "She Thinks I Still Care," the Dickey Lee/George Jones country classic, is sped up Four Seasons-style with shredding guitar. And "Karen" (featuring the fabulous pun "I'm a fool for Karen") spices a mild Buddy Holly tune with killer destructo guitar from some anonymous L.A. Wrecking Crew stalwart. Fascinating genre-bending experiments, sadly never followed up. --Ken Barnes

Memories of a more innocent time.......2006-04-17
Seminal hot-rod.......2006-02-14
The Rip Chords were essentially originally Phil Stewart and Ernie Bringas, formerly known as the Opposites, augmented or replaced on record by producers Terry Melcher and Bruce Johnston and others, and backed by the top Los Angeles studio guys. Collectively referred to as the Wrecking Crew, they featured among their number Leon Russell, Steve Douglas, Glen Campbell, Carol Kaye, Earl Palmer and Hal Blaine, to name but a few.
Hey Little Cobra was released to capitalise on the US hit of the same name and also included the earlier singles Here I Stand, a revival of a minor hit by Wade Flemmons and the Newcomers from 1958, and Gone. The B-sides were The Queen, Karen and She Thinks I Still Care. The "Jackie" referred to in The Queen, is apparently the great Jackie DeShannon, then the girlfriend of Terry Melcher, apparently given to putting on airs, driving around in a Sting Ray, thinking she's a queen and treating everybody mean, according to this Dionesque ditty. She Thinks I Still Care had been a hit for George Jones the previous year, and is included in its album version, which has additional vocals compared to the original single version.
Most of the album has a hot-rod theme, including Beach Boys and Jan and Dean revivals among several Melcher/Johnston originals, and is one of the most prime examples of the genre. There are three bonus tracks not found on the original album, these being Karen, the 1964 single Don't Be Scared and its instrumental flipside Bunny Hill.
Apart from the two bonus B-sides all the tracks are in stereo. These have been taken from the original master tapes but, due to imperfections of balance that would have been corrected at the mastering stage for the vinyl release, sometimes lack oomph. My only other criticism is the rather short playing time of under 31 minutes.

Amazon.com's Best of 1999
Like Sonic Youth and the Beastie Boys, Stereolab have always acted as cultural ambassadors (enthusiastically turning folks on to neglected artists and sounds) as much as a band of their own. On this gorgeous disc the group spice up their sonic soup with jazz, creating complex songs that are spot-on terrific and remind the listener of no other band in the world. --Mike McGonigalAmazon.com
On this bemusingly titled album, Stereolab toss around small chunks of music as catchy and irresistable as anything they've ever recorded. The warm Moog synth that leads off "Infinity Girl" or the horns that burst out of Laetitia Sadier's dry, layered voice in "The Free Design" will significantly boost your serotonin levels. The deconstructions these sonic scraps undergo and the analog keyboard textures around them are radically broad-minded, unveiling a separate and equally engaging architecture all their own. The ear follows one, then the other, first harmonically together, then suddenly cacophonous, all wrapped up in that familiar, '60s-a-go-go ambience. The scrupulous sensibilities of coproducers John McEntire and Jim O'Rourke are all over this record, incorporating the Chicago post-rock electronic sound and left-field musical influences at the heart of their work. Yet just when the song is sure to fall apart, Stereolab rediscovers the melody at the core. Take "Puncture in the Radax Permutation": a descending string melody mingles with a plunking xylophone-like pattern, the blend getting more and more abrasive. Suddenly the strings rise up with the drum track and a dreamy little tune reveals itself. It's not a record that's easy to get one's head around. Repeated listens, however, expose the diamonds in the rough, though the rough itself proves just as valuable. --Matthew CookeCustomer Reviews:
Impressive compilation of relatively mediocre material.......2007-03-15
This might not be one of their most memorable albums, but in an undeniably impressive body of personalized work, this gladly holds up with the best of their light-hearted material. With the personalized stamp of sophisto-indie popsters Stereolab in their full-on prime, it is hard to let many vocal and some instrumental indulgences detract from an ever present playfully arousing but cool, calculated, and detached musical approach. Here more then ever the band is willing to play with it's listeners on as large a level as possible, stretching their already original sound to encompass whatever passing fancy seemed to warrant experimentation. While results feel varied struggling to balance an overtly catchy, structurally-obsessed vocalist with unusually sporadic, sometimes forced band mechanics, through and through the disc remains a solid testament to the group's unique power, only criticized heavily by others when compared to a majority of more focused albums. Still, this lengthy pop excursion would seem essential to anyone into the under appreciated masterminds, and an unlikely though completely appropriate starting point for anyone curious enough to appreciate a good deconstructed melody now and again.
Not Their Best But............2005-06-09
Brilliant, just might need some home-editing.......2004-02-27
This still seemed impenetrably dense, a long slog to get through it all in one sitting, until I read through some Amazon reviews and took the advice of those who said to listen to it in short sections. Voila! The secrets of a new world revealed!
There really is a fantastically imaginative album in here. It just needs some editing to bring out its best. Your mileage may vary, but my solution is to cut "People Do It All The Time" and the "Velvet Water/Blue Milk/Caleidoscopic Gaze" section. The start of the album flows better when track 1 goes straight into track 3, and the latter half is tighter without the 24 minutes of slow, ambient texturing of tracks 10-12. (The excised cuts can be worthwhile in their own right, but maybe they just would've been better reserved for an EP or single b-side.) Sometimes I move "People Do It" into the "Spiracles" slot, or I leave in track 10 or 12, but whatever. Just give it a try, and play around with it until the program flows for you.
I can't give 5 stars to an album that needs 3-4 cuts taken out to bring the whole into focus, but digging into this music lately has been an exciting trip. It is Stereolab at their warmest, funniest, and most daring. They sound like a band of unlimited ideas, unafraid to try anything, and able to get most of it across so long as you're willing to make a little effort to meet them part-way. And if a few things don't work so well? Oh, well. Most of it is brilliant, and who else can take you on such a joyride? They're still giving more than your money's worth.
Segun tu estimulante.......2003-12-12
not the best, but incredible never- the- less........2003-08-24
If this album was a place, it would be Chicago as portrayed by the artist Radebaugh. It's jazzy, mature, retro-futuristic, yet cosmopolitan. Othertimes it is easy going, while capturing elements that are both playful and wonderous. It's certainly not New Yorkish though. This one is distinctly representative of the Windy City. Dots and Loops, while capturing similar elements, is more reflective of a Parisian setting.
Cobra Phases is laced with various musical influences such as Sun Ra, the Free Design (hence the song name), and other obscure vinyl treats that have mostly been tucked away in a warehouse somewhere. It's a wonderful album because it takes these influences and actually uses them to create a musical entity that is in my opinion, more evolved than they ever were. Then again, that is what Stereolab is particularly good at doing- digging up forgotten styles of music and giving them class.
The reason why I could not award this as a 5 star album is that while it was excellent, the problem was that some of the songs should have been trimmed off the album. It could have been about 3 tracks shorter. One song that could have been scrapped is "Blue Milk". Understandably, some people can argue that it reverts back to their pre- "emporer tomato" style of trance-rock. These same people would probably find inspiration in hearing a track of Fran Drescher laughing nonstop for 11 minutes. The song is flat, aggrivating, uncreative, and should have been reserved for a soundcheck rather than as a display of art on the album. I want to hear complexity of absolutely gorgeous songs like "the Free Design." I want to hear the harmonious dischord (in this case the oxymoron works) of acid jazz songs like "Fuses". I want to hear the ultra-lounge chill out sounds of "People do it All the Time" and "the Spiracles." And the list goes on.

This Atlanta-based quartet oozes enthusiasm and energy in serving up an infectious blend of rockabilly and swing. In the process, the Cigar Store Indians prove that melody and aggression can happily coexist. While the rhythm section roars and rumbles, Ben Friedman earnestly delivers his vocals over Jim Lavender's formidable electric twang and tinges of steel guitar, piano, and horns. The music ranges from cactus-and-armadillo-skull dirges to unassuming ballads to high-octane romps. Above all, the Indians make time-tested musical styles sound fresh and exciting; they're danceable and catchy without being shallow. --Marc GreilsamerCustomer Reviews:

I must recommend, however, that if you've never heard CSI (Cigar Store Indians), that you get the self-titled CD before you listen to this one, in order to gain more insight into CSI.
