Sam Hollander (Method Man, The Sounds, Gym Class Heroes) and Sluggo, the alter ego of renowned session bassist Dave Katz (Roger Daltrey). Highly Reccomended. It's got a blend of the 80s with a more contemporary feel and keeps yer head boppin along with the beat.

Saw this band on this years Honda Civic Tour. I originally went to see Fall Out Boy (of course!) and was totally taken over by Cobra Starship!
I find their music original and fun.
Favorite tracks are "Send My Love to the Dance Floor..." and "Keep it Simple".
I would definitely recommend this album to anyone who is looking for something different.

Cobra Startship's debut album will put you in such a great musical mood, you wont be able to help dancing with yourself!

Gabe Saporta knows just want it takes to get the listener to really feel his songs and get you moving!

My favorite tracks are Send my Love... The balland of Big Poppa... The Kids are all F'd up.

If you are feeling Gabe's sound, be sure to check out some of his former band, Midtown's releases: Forget What you Know OR Living Well is the Best Revenge.

To quote her fellow Irishman, poet William Butler Yeats, when Sinead O'Connor's debut, The Lion and the Cobra, was released, a terrible beauty was born. O'Connor has a haunting voice as dark as the Irish bogs, and her unwavering delivery simultaneously inflames and chills. She sings in two ranges: her soprano ("Never Get Old," "Jackie") is a nearly monastic chant that's angular and breathy like a pan flute or a tin whistle, while her alto, reigning in "I Want Your (Hands on Me)" and "Mandinka," is a suspended, forceful spoken-word tone that never quite yells. By switching back and forth between these two vocal modes, she yanks the listener into her turmoil, giving you no choice but to empathize. She was only 20 years old during this recording, and her difficult relationships with lovers, motherhood, her parents, and the Catholic Church were traumatic and fresh. But rather than mellow with maturity, she gained notoriety with publicly unfavorable political antics that would accompany and often overshadow her equally astounding follow-up, I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got. --Beth Bessmer

4 out of 5 stars This Is Originality!.......2007-04-13

The days before Sinead O'Connor became an all out psycho were good. She produced some really interesting music without trying way to hard. She showed she could sing and create a style of her own. "The Lion And The Cobra" is where her inspirational journey began. Though short, the album summed up Sinead O'Connor with only a few little glitches. The CD hasn't dated too much, though you can certainly tell it is not from todays music. This record was clearly influenced by Kate Bush, using some of the same techniques (the whale sounds in "Jerusalem" sound identical). Her epic stories told in the songs are incredibly in depth and dramatic.

The album opens with the soft "Jackie" which crescendoes into the loud, fast and extremely catchy "Mandinka". Both these songs are winners and together provide a great opening into the CD. Just as the CD starts strong, it maintains depth and demands attention until "Drink Before The War". Although this is a strong song on it's own, it just feels like more of the same at the end of the album. "Troy" sounds like a much stronger version of this song and it could easily have been replaced by something catchier. "Just Call Me Joe" fades into the background due to O'Connor's soft singing and the album ends on a good note, instead of an excellent one. These last two songs are the fault with an otherwise stunning debut. "Just Like U Said It Would B" is one of the most imaginative songs I've ever heard and "Jerusalem" maintains an appropriate dramatic and spooky atmosphere throughout.

The album, which is considered a classic by some, is definately worth a listen. O'Connor is truly different to the generic artists that can be heard playing on the radio and this is possibly her finest work. The instruments are simple on the album, usually keeping to drums, giutars and maybe synthasisers. The instrument of distinction, however, is O'Connor's voice. Hopefully one day soon she'll release an album as good as this again.

Download: "Mandinka", "Jerusalem", "Just Like U Said It Would B"

5 out of 5 stars Lion and the Cobra.......2007-01-06

Fantastic album! Only a couple of duff (in my opinion) tracks, the rest all good, and some excellent ones too.

It's the only one of her albums I've ever felt I wanted to buy, & got the cd to finally replace the vinyl album I've been playing for years!

5 out of 5 stars Still just too good.......2006-11-18

There are albums that can be reviewed casually, and then there's that less-than-one-percent or so that move and scare you so much that you're almost afraid to say anything. (Or maybe that's just me.)

To this day, this is one of those albums for me. As with Tori Amos's "Little Earthquakes" many years later, I was not entirely prepared for this particular debut. It simply showed up and said, "Will you be my friend, or would you prefer to take a hike?" The choice was not difficult.

I wrote in my review of her second album that I consider it even better than the first, and that's true, and the only problem with that argument is that the second album doesn't contain "Jackie" or "Mandinka" or the breathtaking "Troy." This one does.

5 out of 5 stars One of my Top 10 Albums ever!!!.......2006-11-02

Ok,an teenage gay James bought this straight away after hearing 'Mandinka' just once. Not long after I saw Sinead O' Connor on 'Top of the Pops' and was blown away by her presence and appearance. I read all I could in the music presses and was really impressed when I found out that originally she had long, lustrous, hair and her agent or whoever wanted to market her in that way - appearance was everything; and so she promptly shaved it all off. Essentially she was going to get far on her musical ability or not at all. So you can imagine how important she was to a young man developing his own 'un-conventional' identity.

Ok, the prelude is over ....... GASP! The tracks on the album were at the time and indeed still are uniquely different. I love the sampling with Gaelic on 'Never Get Old' as well as the beautiful lyrics - "young man in a quiet place". 'Jerusalem' and 'Jackie' are fantastic for the vocals alone and 'Troy' is my all time favourite 'angry breaking up with someone' tune.

Yeah, the album is nearly twenty years old, but yet to be equalled. Not many men like Sinead O' Connor, and neither seemingly do many women and strangely enough for the same reasons. Few people it seems like a woman who stands up for herself and believes in what she does. Ok, so I'm biased, but try it out before you disregard it out of hand.

5 out of 5 stars The best.......2006-09-15

I was hesitant when I first listened to Sinead. I liked Nothing Compares 2 U, but I was really into alternative rock and metal at the time (about 10 years ago).

At first I thought The Lion and the Cobra was OK. In particular, I enjoyed the catchy sound of I Want Your (Hands On Me).

I Want Your is now easily my least favorite song on this CD.

Jackie, Jerusalem, Just Like U Said It Would B, and Drink Before the War are among the best songs of all time by anyone.

Troy is even better.

The more I listen to other music, the better this album gets.

I consider Sinead to be the greatest musical artist of all time, as much as it pains me to put her ahead of the Smashing Pumpkins. Sinead continued to do a lot of extraordinary music, including You Cause As Much Sorrow, The Last Day of Our Acquaintance, Success Has Made A Failure of Our Home, Rising Sun, many others, and yes, Nothing Compares 2 U.

But this remains the best collection of her raw, passionate, beautiful music.

This is the best album of all time, and deserves critical listening by everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Otis Collection.......2007-04-05

This compilation has lots of Otis Rush's best early material, and while it predates his classic "So Many Roads," it is still an excellent collection of his music.

I Can't Quit You Baby, Three Times A Fool, Groaning The Blues, and many others remind you why he's been such an influential guitarist, and why people like Eric Clapton love him work.

This is a collection worth owning for the blues guitar fan.

4 out of 5 stars Music good, sound ok.......2007-01-07

There are some very nice tunes on here with great riffs and licks to learn if youre a guitarist. You can tell Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton ate this stuff up! Unfortunately, his vocals are often distorted. Seems as if no one else really seems to matter, so take my review with a grain of salt.

These recordings were made 50 years ago and dont sound bad by any means, but thats why it got 4 stars only. I realize they may not have had too many resources to use recourding these tracks back in 1956, but this was probably the fault of the engineer. Distorted guitar can work if thats what youre going for, but when the vocals are distorting then its time to turn down the level! Otis Rush sounds great here though...I cant recommend something else that sounds better - so go ahead and pick this up. Dont expect super high fidelity though.

5 out of 5 stars Every review here is 5 stars .......2004-08-11

because this is as good as it gets for blues singing, guitar playing and songwriting not necessarily in any order --- Otis Rush is as great a blues artist as any other in the history of the genre

5 out of 5 stars Blues at it's best.......2004-06-17

Excellent compilation and a great collection of songs recorded under the limited enviroment that Eli Toscano's Cobra Studio had, but all these songs stand by themselves. Every time I hear Otis or Freddie King I can hear Eric Clapton, it's clear he got influenced by this great musician. I can't quit you baby, a song written by Willie Dixon (who plays almost all the bass parts) later covered by Led Zeppelin and All your love later covered by the same Eric Clapton with John Mayall and also Aerosmith payed tribute this song later on.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent.......2003-11-29

A criminally underrated performer, southpaw guitarist Otis Rush broke into the R&B top 10 on his first attempt with the great slow blues "I Can't Quit You Baby".

That song was penned by Willie Dixon, as are several of these late-50s singles which Rush recorded for Eli Toscano's Cobra label, but Rush was a more than able composer himself, and he is the man behind some of the best songs on this CD, including "All Your Love (I Miss Loving)", "Three Times A Fool" and "Keep On Loving Me Baby"; superb, sophisticated blues tunes which often eclipse Dixon's.

Otis Rush' brand of blues is less rough and boisterous than the music of Howlin' Wolf, but not as polished as that of B.B. King, and he was a major source of inspiration to Stevie Ray Vaughan, who named his band after Rush's song "Double Trouble", and did a great rendition of "All Your Love".
His intense vocals and stinging lead guitar playing is reminicent of Buddy Guy and Magic Sam, and if talent was everything and luck and timing never mattered, Otis Rush would currently be hailed as the reigning king of Chicago blues.

Alternating between smouldering slow blues and swinging up-tempo numbers, this is one of the truly essential albums in any blues collection. If Rush had never recorded another note, his reputation would be intact based solely on these eight singles.

The Rip Chords were essentially a false front behind which lurked future Beach Boy Bruce Johnston and Byrds/Paul Revere & The Raiders producer Terry Melcher. "Hey Little Cobra," a wimpier-than-usual hotrod record that benefits from Johnston and Melcher's full-bodied vocals, was their first big hit, generating a first album filled with unnecessary Beach Boys/Jan & Dean covers (four of 'em, plus an instrumental that basically rips off "Little Deuce Coupe") and a pretty good Melcher/Johnston, Spector-in-drag car tune, "Trophy Machine."

Much more intriguing is their guitar-heavy non-automotive material. "Here I Stand," their first single, updates Wade Flemons's 1959 Chicago R&B cha-cha with piercing, fruity falsetto and some vicious, loud guitar. "The Queen," which sadly isn't about a hotrodding RuPaul--she's a stuck-up Sting Ray driver--is vintage Dion goosed by queasy heights of falsetto. "Gone" sounds like the Isley Brothers' "Shout" with more tuff guitar, while "Ding Dong" is a doo-wop anticipation of "I Fought the Law." Post-album single/bonus track "Don't Be Scared" combines the Beach Boys' "Little Honda" and "Dance Dance Dance" with heavy fuzz. "She Thinks I Still Care," the Dickey Lee/George Jones country classic, is sped up Four Seasons-style with shredding guitar. And "Karen" (featuring the fabulous pun "I'm a fool for Karen") spices a mild Buddy Holly tune with killer destructo guitar from some anonymous L.A. Wrecking Crew stalwart. Fascinating genre-bending experiments, sadly never followed up. --Ken Barnes

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Memories of a more innocent time.......2006-04-17

Who cares about the soap opera politics about the credits. This album is a classic of the pre-Beatles era! It is to the Boomer generation what Glenn Miller was to our parents. It first appeared in our house in the original vinyl version around 1964. I still have that original, albeit, badly scratched and abused from being played on everything from a late 40's Hi-Fi (before Stereo) to that ubiquitous plastic portable record player that every preteen owned. This album, Jan & Dean, & Roy Orbison were the early 1960's. The Beach Boys didn't hit the Midwest until after the Beatles. It was played everywhere from the laundrymat to the local Root Beer stands. And it still holds up after 40 years. Ah! For the days when a carb was something on your engine and gas was 25 cents a gallon. Now if I could just find a real Root Beer stand still in operation...

4 out of 5 stars Seminal hot-rod.......2006-02-14

"We've been going steady, and you've been making me cry. Now it's your turn baby, so I'm saying bye-bye". Over the sound of a revving engine Gracia Nitzsche from the Blossoms utters these iconic words at the start of Gone, before blasting away in a hot-rod into a new world of empowerment, leaving the Rip Chords standing alone on the corner, recalling the event in a frenzy of tattered emotion. When I first heard this on the radio in the stuffy environment of the BBC Light Programme in 1963, it seemed the perfect pop statement of a new era. It was the time of the surf and hot rod crazes, the Beach Boys, Phil Spector's Wall Of Sound and some new guys from Liverpool, but still a year before the Shangri-Las, and it made Birmingham, England, seem a million miles too far from California.
The Rip Chords were essentially originally Phil Stewart and Ernie Bringas, formerly known as the Opposites, augmented or replaced on record by producers Terry Melcher and Bruce Johnston and others, and backed by the top Los Angeles studio guys. Collectively referred to as the Wrecking Crew, they featured among their number Leon Russell, Steve Douglas, Glen Campbell, Carol Kaye, Earl Palmer and Hal Blaine, to name but a few.
Hey Little Cobra was released to capitalise on the US hit of the same name and also included the earlier singles Here I Stand, a revival of a minor hit by Wade Flemmons and the Newcomers from 1958, and Gone. The B-sides were The Queen, Karen and She Thinks I Still Care. The "Jackie" referred to in The Queen, is apparently the great Jackie DeShannon, then the girlfriend of Terry Melcher, apparently given to putting on airs, driving around in a Sting Ray, thinking she's a queen and treating everybody mean, according to this Dionesque ditty. She Thinks I Still Care had been a hit for George Jones the previous year, and is included in its album version, which has additional vocals compared to the original single version.
Most of the album has a hot-rod theme, including Beach Boys and Jan and Dean revivals among several Melcher/Johnston originals, and is one of the most prime examples of the genre. There are three bonus tracks not found on the original album, these being Karen, the 1964 single Don't Be Scared and its instrumental flipside Bunny Hill.
Apart from the two bonus B-sides all the tracks are in stereo. These have been taken from the original master tapes but, due to imperfections of balance that would have been corrected at the mastering stage for the vinyl release, sometimes lack oomph. My only other criticism is the rather short playing time of under 31 minutes.

4 out of 5 stars Don't you know you're gonna shut 'em down?.......2005-07-16

The Rip Chords were the duo of Phil Stewart and Ernie Bringas. The duo sang their first two singles themselves. But then, producer Terry Melcher recorded a song called "Hey Little Cobra" with himself on lead vocals that he was sure would be a hit. Since the Rip Chords had some minor success with their first two singles, he followed up that momentum by releasing "Hey Little Cobra" as a Rip Chords single. It became a #4 hit, and the rest is history. With a Top Five single, naturally an album was called for, so a handful of new songs were recorded, with producers Bruce Johnston and Terry Melcher handling most of the vocals. These new songs were all car related, following the theme of the hit single. The album was a mixture of older songs with the "real" Rip Chords and newer songs, mostly without the original members. Surprisingly, the album works very well. Despite the different vocalists, the songs all have a similar style to each other. It's that early '60s California sound, complete with the obligatory Beach Boys cover songs. The CD adds three single sides that never appeared on an album. Recommended to fans of the California sound.

5 out of 5 stars Forgotten classics.......2000-11-25

Whenever people remember great surf & hot rod music of the '60s, these days they almost always remember the Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, and... nobody else. While these two groups indeed wrote the mega smash hits and were superb talent (in my book, the best band of all time isn't the Beatles, it's the Beach Boys), lots of great music goes largely unremember by all but the diehard fans. The Rip Chords are, in my opinion, the greatest of these forgotten bands. "Hey Little Cobra," their first album, despite the many Beach Boys and Jan & Dean covers, is a true classic. "Hey Little Cobra," "Here I Stand," "Trophy Machine," and the rest are pure good times. The Rip Chords have a great, unique sound; they were one of those rare collections of talent that doesn't come along every day. It's a shame they don't get the recognition they deserve. When I'm driving in one of my custom cars, I always have a Rip Chords CD nearby. My hot rod may only be a VW Karmann Ghia, but in my mind I'm sitting at the starting line, eyeing the Sting Ray Corvettes and Jaguar XKEs as the flag man unfurls the green...

5 out of 5 stars Music.......2000-02-20

Next to Brian Wilson's Pet Sounds concept, this album is one of the best, high quality sounds ever recorded by a vocal group.Don't try to challenge me on this one.Just listen to the hot rod music and relax on the beach with your fold-out lawn chair.Three Window Coupe was better, but only because all four members including Melcher,Johnston,Bringas and Stewart were working together at once. There is much debate about who appeared on what album, at which time and when. That's where producers become very important and we all know Mulcher was tampering with some of the voices and cross-overdubbing by putting voices ontop of one another.I see nothing wrong with doing that.It sounds cool, but it's hard to tell who's which on what. You get my point bro? Terry Melcher and Bruce Johnston deserve a little bit of credit for the success of Hey Little Cobra, because they stepped in at a time when Bringas(one of the original members) was off becoming an educated man. Left with only Phil Stewart to pick on, I think they felt more in control of their work, and took their talent to a whole new level. It is very apparent when you listen to the #4 song in the nation, Hey Little Cobra, which of course says it all. Phil Stewart claims to be in it,but Bruce & Terry try to deny he ever had part in it. I give this second best album in the world (behind Pet Sounds) five plus stars and stripes. A must for any vintage rock and roll music collection. One last note before I go, none of my opinions are correct, but everything else is true. E-mail Dan with your thoughts. frostbirds@mediaone.net

I bought the thing three years ago and still can't get enough. It's still one of my favorites. Gotta get back and see these guys in concert again at the end of the month.

I've been a Widespread fan for a while, but until recently I have only owned 3 of their CD's. In the last month I've purchased every CD they have. They just get better and better. I can't wait til I break something else!

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2006-12-09

This band is incredible and this cd highlights all of their talents. If you like listening to talented musicians instead of three chord songs you hear on the radio, it's worth giving Widespread Panic a shot. To respond to some of the previous comments; first, "it all sounds the same" is what people say who don't listen to that genre of music. How many people say all rap songs or all country songs "sound the same?" They don't, and neither to Panic's. Second, I'm not really sure what y'all enjoy but just because Panic is too much for y'all to handle there is really no reason to disparage them. In summary, there are no other bands that can improvise, transition, and just simply amaze like Panic.

5 out of 5 stars You don't need drugs to enjoy this.......2006-11-03

All the previous comments about stoners and "beer hippies" are weak. This band's output is full of talented musicianship that can be enjoyed by humans of all ages. Being stoned or drunk maybe gives you a temporary focus on it, but get real--you'll enjoy even more if you just crank it up and let the vibes flow. Screw drugs and right-wing "holier-than-thou" idiots, just enjoy the music and don't get preachy. This band is easy on the ears and doesn't force ANYTHING on you.

4 out of 5 stars If You're Clean and Sober, Don't Buy This Album.......2006-07-30

I'll agree with the other posters that this a chemically enhanced CD. It helps if your stoned or drunk. But, since I listen to music and go to bars, I really don't drink coffee at those bars, and this music suits me.

This is a great band and wonderful genre that is special into itself. It is hard to pin down, and thats why I like it. Its garage band, its guitar jam music, its alternative rock. Its noise.

Whatever it is, if you feel so inclined, pop a beer or two and enjoy the music. Its not Bach. The lyrics aren't meaningful. But the music sure is fun.

3 out of 5 stars Musical Montaging at its best!.......2006-12-14

Ok this movie is a 1986 cop action movie starring Stallone but the music makes a pretty good statement. Many key parts of the movie are set to music from this soundtrack. Songs to listen to are "Feel The Heat" and "Angel of the City" and the title track "Cobra" Also "Voice of America's Sons." There are no superhits here but solid music for an ok movie.

5 out of 5 stars This Rocks!.......2005-07-27

Soundtracks of the 80's always jammed when it came to cool lyrics, hot rhythms, and songls that were only developed and recorded for the films they represented. Cobra is no different. Its cool streamlined, synthesizer riffs, to the solid vocals of its artists, make this one cool album to jam or drive to. I even enjoy working out to this as well!! Rock On!!

5 out of 5 stars COBRA ROCKS!!.......2004-06-28

Not only does the movie kick a**, but so does the soundtrack. What happened to this kind've music? We went from bada** bands
like Survivor and AC/DC to jokes like Nsync and all the other "little" boys that think they are bands

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2003-03-12

Great workout music! I had it on tape earlier, and it was starting to wear out. This kicks!

5 out of 5 stars Great 80's.......2000-06-26

Favorite title is Angel in the City.

One of those great 80's music soundtracks like the Beverly Hills 1 and 2 soundtracks.

Amazon.com's Best of 1999

Like Sonic Youth and the Beastie Boys, Stereolab have always acted as cultural ambassadors (enthusiastically turning folks on to neglected artists and sounds) as much as a band of their own. On this gorgeous disc the group spice up their sonic soup with jazz, creating complex songs that are spot-on terrific and remind the listener of no other band in the world. --Mike McGonigal

Amazon.com

On this bemusingly titled album, Stereolab toss around small chunks of music as catchy and irresistable as anything they've ever recorded. The warm Moog synth that leads off "Infinity Girl" or the horns that burst out of Laetitia Sadier's dry, layered voice in "The Free Design" will significantly boost your serotonin levels. The deconstructions these sonic scraps undergo and the analog keyboard textures around them are radically broad-minded, unveiling a separate and equally engaging architecture all their own. The ear follows one, then the other, first harmonically together, then suddenly cacophonous, all wrapped up in that familiar, '60s-a-go-go ambience. The scrupulous sensibilities of coproducers John McEntire and Jim O'Rourke are all over this record, incorporating the Chicago post-rock electronic sound and left-field musical influences at the heart of their work. Yet just when the song is sure to fall apart, Stereolab rediscovers the melody at the core. Take "Puncture in the Radax Permutation": a descending string melody mingles with a plunking xylophone-like pattern, the blend getting more and more abrasive. Suddenly the strings rise up with the drum track and a dreamy little tune reveals itself. It's not a record that's easy to get one's head around. Repeated listens, however, expose the diamonds in the rough, though the rough itself proves just as valuable. --Matthew Cooke

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Impressive compilation of relatively mediocre material.......2007-03-15

3 1/2

This might not be one of their most memorable albums, but in an undeniably impressive body of personalized work, this gladly holds up with the best of their light-hearted material. With the personalized stamp of sophisto-indie popsters Stereolab in their full-on prime, it is hard to let many vocal and some instrumental indulgences detract from an ever present playfully arousing but cool, calculated, and detached musical approach. Here more then ever the band is willing to play with it's listeners on as large a level as possible, stretching their already original sound to encompass whatever passing fancy seemed to warrant experimentation. While results feel varied struggling to balance an overtly catchy, structurally-obsessed vocalist with unusually sporadic, sometimes forced band mechanics, through and through the disc remains a solid testament to the group's unique power, only criticized heavily by others when compared to a majority of more focused albums. Still, this lengthy pop excursion would seem essential to anyone into the under appreciated masterminds, and an unlikely though completely appropriate starting point for anyone curious enough to appreciate a good deconstructed melody now and again.

4 out of 5 stars Not Their Best But............2005-06-09

Great none the less. More jazzy than most of their other stuff. It took me 4-5 listens to realize that Cobra & Phases not only didn't suck but is actually a great record.... not phenomenal but indeed great. Not recommended as your first Stereolab purchase (go with Mars Audio Quintet)unless the price is right.

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant, just might need some home-editing.......2004-02-27

I'm a fan who fell for "the groop" after hearing 'Dots & Loops,' and then I'd picked up a couple earlier releases, but the critical magazine reviews for this one (and the ugly cover) put me off until I found it a couple years later in a 'used' bin. Even after getting a listen for myself, my initial response was that the critics were right. After a few spins, I shelved it, until 'Margerine Eclipse' recently got me listening to my old Stereolab discs again.

This still seemed impenetrably dense, a long slog to get through it all in one sitting, until I read through some Amazon reviews and took the advice of those who said to listen to it in short sections. Voila! The secrets of a new world revealed!

There really is a fantastically imaginative album in here. It just needs some editing to bring out its best. Your mileage may vary, but my solution is to cut "People Do It All The Time" and the "Velvet Water/Blue Milk/Caleidoscopic Gaze" section. The start of the album flows better when track 1 goes straight into track 3, and the latter half is tighter without the 24 minutes of slow, ambient texturing of tracks 10-12. (The excised cuts can be worthwhile in their own right, but maybe they just would've been better reserved for an EP or single b-side.) Sometimes I move "People Do It" into the "Spiracles" slot, or I leave in track 10 or 12, but whatever. Just give it a try, and play around with it until the program flows for you.

I can't give 5 stars to an album that needs 3-4 cuts taken out to bring the whole into focus, but digging into this music lately has been an exciting trip. It is Stereolab at their warmest, funniest, and most daring. They sound like a band of unlimited ideas, unafraid to try anything, and able to get most of it across so long as you're willing to make a little effort to meet them part-way. And if a few things don't work so well? Oh, well. Most of it is brilliant, and who else can take you on such a joyride? They're still giving more than your money's worth.

5 out of 5 stars Segun tu estimulante.......2003-12-12

Escucha y disfruta

4 out of 5 stars not the best, but incredible never- the- less........2003-08-24

Stereolab probably is one of the best kept secrets that never quite reached a level of mass appeal and constant radio bombardment. In a way, this is a good thing because the band is able to maintain reverence among those who are fortunate enough to hear this group.

If this album was a place, it would be Chicago as portrayed by the artist Radebaugh. It's jazzy, mature, retro-futuristic, yet cosmopolitan. Othertimes it is easy going, while capturing elements that are both playful and wonderous. It's certainly not New Yorkish though. This one is distinctly representative of the Windy City. Dots and Loops, while capturing similar elements, is more reflective of a Parisian setting.

Cobra Phases is laced with various musical influences such as Sun Ra, the Free Design (hence the song name), and other obscure vinyl treats that have mostly been tucked away in a warehouse somewhere. It's a wonderful album because it takes these influences and actually uses them to create a musical entity that is in my opinion, more evolved than they ever were. Then again, that is what Stereolab is particularly good at doing- digging up forgotten styles of music and giving them class.

The reason why I could not award this as a 5 star album is that while it was excellent, the problem was that some of the songs should have been trimmed off the album. It could have been about 3 tracks shorter. One song that could have been scrapped is "Blue Milk". Understandably, some people can argue that it reverts back to their pre- "emporer tomato" style of trance-rock. These same people would probably find inspiration in hearing a track of Fran Drescher laughing nonstop for 11 minutes. The song is flat, aggrivating, uncreative, and should have been reserved for a soundcheck rather than as a display of art on the album. I want to hear complexity of absolutely gorgeous songs like "the Free Design." I want to hear the harmonious dischord (in this case the oxymoron works) of acid jazz songs like "Fuses". I want to hear the ultra-lounge chill out sounds of "People do it All the Time" and "the Spiracles." And the list goes on.

2 out of 5 stars Not ready for prime time .......2006-06-08

The singles just don't compare to his later work. A lot of the songs are in keys that don't work for the vocals. If Magic Sam's reputation had to stand on these recordings alone he'd be remembered as a journeman at best.

If you're looking for your first Magic Sam recording get "West Side Soul."

3 out of 5 stars Good But Not Great Magic Sam Collection.......2006-05-17

This collection is valuable to introduce listeners to a great musician who died way too early, and it features some good performances from Magic Sam. However, it is not the best CD to listen to because the material is unpolished and was done better on other CDs, most notably West Side Soul, which was Magic Sam's breakthrough album released shortly before his death of a heart attack in 1967 at age 32.

This CD won't make anyone ashamed, but it is also not the best example of Magic Sam's great work.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the best of teh best of the blues...!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-05-10

There are NO fillers here, just 100% pure jump blues. This is an outstanding colelction of great blues, infused with soul, jazz, swing, and r&b. A great vocie, and most of the songs have boppin' or shufflin' rhythms that are great for dancers(strolelrs and boppers). A wonderful cd, and an essential for fans of greasy blues singers. If you like Junior Wells Cobra sides from the late 50's, you'll like these too!!!

5 out of 5 stars A blues compilation done to perfection.......2005-03-10

Cobra released a great cd here in The Essential Mahic Sam, covering his early recording(which are the only ones you really need). These songs from 1957 to the early 60's are awesome. Perfect msuic to play while cruisin' in your 57 Chevy. This music shows how closely related rockabilly and 50's rock'n'roll really were to urban blues, becaue you can hear a little Magic Sam style in Elvis' recordings of the period, and some of the backup bands on thsi cd sound similar to Gene Vincent's backup band The Blue Caps, and some of the palying here sounds like Bill Haley's backup group the Comets. In any case all the music here jumps and swings, and shuffles. And as far as dancers are concerned there are boppers, jivers, and plenty of strollers!!! Exellent comp.

5 out of 5 stars *****1/2. ALL great stuff, and a lot of superb stuff too!!!!.......2005-03-10

Five and a half starrs, NOT just five!!! This is awesome jump swing blues(from the Lousi Jordan class of vocalists), and it all has that shuffle boogie beat. This music is ALL great blues, no fillers, and a lot of boppers and jivers for all you dancers. Exellent cd weather you are a rockabilly jitterbuggin' dancer or an urban blues fan. It doesn't get much better then this. Magic Sam's groups styles cross many boundries sounding at times like Gene Vincents Blue Caps, BB King, Louis Prima, and TBone Walker!

This Atlanta-based quartet oozes enthusiasm and energy in serving up an infectious blend of rockabilly and swing. In the process, the Cigar Store Indians prove that melody and aggression can happily coexist. While the rhythm section roars and rumbles, Ben Friedman earnestly delivers his vocals over Jim Lavender's formidable electric twang and tinges of steel guitar, piano, and horns. The music ranges from cactus-and-armadillo-skull dirges to unassuming ballads to high-octane romps. Above all, the Indians make time-tested musical styles sound fresh and exciting; they're danceable and catchy without being shallow. --Marc Greilsamer

I saw this group as the opening act for the Squirel Nut Zippers and was I impressed. You can help but move and dance to the sound. Great lead guiter by Jim Lavender. I have all their CD's and hope to get the new one, Built of Stone this weekend. They are probably one of the hardest working bands.

5 out of 5 stars An incredible band.......2005-05-07

About 10 years ago a friend and I went down to hilton head island to celebrate his 21st birthday. So as you can imagine...many bars were closed by us. Anyway, we stumbled into a hotel bar one night as we had heard, from the street mind you, an incredible sound coming from this place. When we walked in their was a barmaid, and one other customer in the place...practically empty. Except for this band on stage and playing away as if there was a full house. We sat down and ordered our drinks and listened to these fellas play ALL NIGHT! They were amazing! When they FINALLY put their instruments down we bought a round of drinks for them. We sat and talked about the plans for the big time. I told them if and when they put an album out I'd be first in line. But as you can guess...time slipped away and I lost track of these talented guys. But what a surprise! I've found them again AND they have two albums out!! So without even listening to the tracks...I've purchased both...so should you.

4 out of 5 stars Genuine guys, great music, unique CD for your collection........2004-12-27

As a music reviewer for a magazine, it has been my distinct pleasure to meet Ben and the boys on more than one occasion. I have been to see them pretty much every time they make it to my area, and I will see them again, on Jan. 7th (in the Northern VA area). They are the most genuine group of guys you'd ever want to meet, and this is a quality that shines through in their recorded music. If you ever get the chance to see them live, walk up and chat. You'll be amazed at the warmth of character that radiates from these gents.
On to the CD:
This CD is a must-have, and worth every penny if you like country, Rockabilly, roots, Americana, or just good-guys.

I must recommend, however, that if you've never heard CSI (Cigar Store Indians), that you get the self-titled CD before you listen to this one, in order to gain more insight into CSI. My personal preference is for the more rootsy sound, which can be heard on several, but not all, of the tracks on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars great album.......2003-04-04

These guys are great. I never have gotten to see them live but I would in a heartbeat. I could listen to my cd over and over and not get tired of them. I am going to buy thier new cd now.

5 out of 5 stars El Baile De La Cobra.......2001-10-03

Wow!!!!! These guys are great. This is not a bunch of commercial junk, this is Rock-a-Billy at it's best. I have not played a CD over and over like this in years. I just don't get tired of these guys. In fact I just ordered The Cigar Store Indian's first CD and I understand that they have a new live release coming out soon (10-12-01 I think)and I plan on getting that one as well.
These guys put on one of the best, fun-filled shows that you will ever see and I strongly recomend that the next time these guys come to town that you check them out. They have fun and it shows, whether you see them live or listen to one of their recordings.
