This is a terrific CD full of warm and romantic music. It's perfect to listen to or to have as background music.

5 out of 5 stars Spell-binding; breathtaking; most incredible CD ever.......2001-12-02

As a fan of celtic music, I sincerely believe that Heart of the Celts is most astonishing CD I've ever heard. I've often said, that this is the music I'd like to hear as I leave this world!!! I've shared this CD with many friends, who share my love of this CD. Unparralled!

5 out of 5 stars Spellbinding, moving and magical.......1999-12-10

Karen Matheson and Connie Dover's voices are magnificent. If you enjoy Celtic music, this CD is a must. Love songs are even more enchanting when you can't understand the words (some songs are in English, though)! The music really draws you in. I find myself playing it over and over. Came upon it at a 1/2 price book store by accident, what a find!

Narada has done it again!

5 out of 5 stars A family favorite: Timeless, Interesting, Soothing.......1998-12-13

Love every song and listen to the CD frequently. My entire family--from grandpa to children--enjoys the music. When I first played it, we all stopped, sat down by the fire, and just listened.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful voice and beautiful music that grows on you .......2006-11-10

This is my first Connie Dover purchase and I can't wait to buy all the rest of her CDs. How could this artist's beautiful voice and delivery not be in the mainstream. Thank you again Accuradio/Radiocelt! I love Connie's story telling--her voice is so clear that you can understand every word she sings! The Holland Handkerchief, Shady Grove and Fear An Bhata all impress in different ways. Ned of the Hill is a special song that may not be your favorite at first but gets better and better each time you hear it. La Fontaine is sung in french and is emotional and touching--the harmonics are haunting. Connie's supporting musical cast compliment her vocal presentation perfectly.

This is the kind of music that grows on you and just gets better and better with each listen. Connie, when is your next CD coming out?

5 out of 5 stars breath-taking.......2006-07-04

Connie Dover is one of the best celtic singers I have had the pleasure to listen to. I loved the album. I was soothing as well as uplifting.

5 out of 5 stars Evocative, enthralling.......2005-12-07

Here is a wonderful voice, full of purity and presence, singing 11 traditional Irish, Scottish and American songs on 60 minutes of music. This means the songs are longer than the usual 3-minutes-and-out you find on the radio. But frankly I didn't even notice, they are as long as they need to be (except the sweet traditional country tune "Shady Grove", which could be longer).

Connie Dover has a full, clear, rich voice that lets the song shine through even as she lets her voice shape it as it passes. You could not find a greater contrast to a voice like Eva Cassidy's. With Eva, I am sometimes overwhelmed at the stunning power and personality she weaves into her songs, indeed, many have commented that she makes a song her own. Connie Dover makes a song everyone's.

Her voice alone merits 5 stars. But the high quality of the (sometimes melancholy) material and the solid instrumentation are not just bonuses. This is effortless music with lots of musical effort beind it. The song selection is basically from Irish, Scottish and American folk music, with instruments appropriate to the genre. You'll hear some Gaelic and French in the vocals. And always with that pure clear voice.

If you're looking for something away from the rushing waters of American pop music, give her a try. There is a great deal of talent to be found off the main road, here in the backroads of folk music, at its best. "I took the road less traveled by and that has made all the difference." (Robert Frost) Take this road, and see where it takes you.

4 out of 5 stars Love Connie Dover's voice..........2005-07-19

...but haven't gotten into the album yet- in part due to not listening to it enough. I was hoping for a more atmospheric sound as on "Cantus" or "Ubi Caritas" so I think it may take me a while to get used to her more traditional stylings on this album. The country number is neat- a different touch. "Fear an Bhata" is a great opener to the album.

5 out of 5 stars Unsurpassed.......2003-12-30

I still haven't found a Celtic artist I like as much as Connie Dover. Her voice is beautiful, and she never has weak moments. Her diction is perfect, as is her intonation. The instrumental accompaniment always enhances the mood of the song- from piano to fiddle to uillean pipes. Her songs are a nice variety of the older and newer, some with lyrics or melodies she has written herself. The harmonies are beautiful, particularly in La Fontaine. I can't say which of her albums is my favorite, but it might be this one. I listen to all of them frequently.

The selection of songs for this cd is excellent, however unable to leave well enough along they include overblown intros, restarts, embellishments etc making the original tune almost unrecognizable. The arranger should be shot.

People who know Phil Coulter primarily for his orchestral arrangements of traditional Irish melodies on recordings such as Classic Tranquility and Celtic Tranquility may be surprised to discover he is also a songwriter of rare ability. The Songs I Love So Well is a collection of some of his personal favorites including "My Boy," which he wrote for Richard Harris's 1973 follow-up to MacArthur Park, and "Scorn Not His Simplicity," a moving song written for his son who was born with Down's syndrome. Also included is the duet with Ronan Keating, "The Town I Love So Well," which was voted one of the best songs of the last millennium in a poll in Ireland. On most of the tracks Coulter eschews his trademark lush instrumental sound in favor of stripped-down, intimate arrangements that are well suited to his limited vocal range. By emphasizing the meaning of the words over the prettiness of the melodies (and Coulter has composed some lovely tunes here), he delivers more powerful versions of these songs than a more "accomplished" singer might have done. But then most songwriters, even if they aren't the best singers around, give the best performances of their own songs. --Michael Simmons

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An Album Like No Other of Phil Coulter's.......2006-11-04

This is a great recording by Phil Coulter, very different from his other work in that it is a vocal album. I purchased it as an opportunity to hear songs I was unfamiliar with in his songbook by the same name. I thought it may be a compilation of other artists who had recorded his songs, but was thrilled that with the exception of Ronan Keating singing with him on "The Town I Loved So Well," it was all Phil. The title of the album is confirmed by the emotion in the vocals. All songs were written by Phil but for "The Man From God Knows Where," a recitation which is especially listenable. I would not necessarily recommend this as an introduction to Phil Coulter's music since it is so different from his other albums, but for those who like his vocals on other albums, it is a must!

5 out of 5 stars the songs i love so well.......2003-11-20

i loved this cd from the moment i started listening to it. especially the old man. it reminds me of all the things i did with my own father who was as irish as they come. and i do miss him. i own several of phil coulters cds and listen to them all the time.

5 out of 5 stars Emotions, emotions, emotions.......2001-04-09

When I am falling asleep, I can listen to this album and enjoy the soothing lilt of Coulter. When I am awake, I can listen to his words and they hit home -- the composition, the integrity, the human-ness (if there is such a word) all hit home. His words can make you cry, fall in love, and wonder at the variety that life in this world offers. I'm liable to wear this CD out very quickly, if that is possible.

5 out of 5 stars The Irish Magician........2001-02-22

It appears that Phil has again taken the words and music, and with seemingly effortless movement, created magic. Listenig to the inspiring words of the child with the golden hair to the gas yard walls, and the dammmed barbed wire growing higher and higher,I loose myself in his wonderful thoughts of the town he loved so well. The old man certainly lets me think of the mistakes I made, by not having someone teach me of the valuable treasures existing between a father and a son. As song after beautiful song is processed through my stereo speakers I wish that I could be sitting in the theatre watching the Houdini of the piano comfort Michael in the fields housing the terrible prison of the past. As the CD completes it's cycle and starts over I swear that the Magician plays and sings like I never heard it before, that everything is brand new.

4 out of 5 stars Gorgeous CD.......2003-09-16

I actually haven't taken this CD out of the player since I got it. In my humble opinion. Hyperion is the classiest label going; in fact, I'll buy Hyperion CDs even without being familiar with the singers, because I trust the producers. I saw this CD classified in the folk section at the library--but I knew better. Marie McLaughlin is a real singer, not a folk singer, and she does justice to these beautiful songs. I'd rather hear a classically trained singer sing folk songs than a folk singer sing anything.

3 out of 5 stars a disappointment from Hyperion.......2001-06-21

I do not wish to be too harsh on this album...there is nothing glaringly wrong with it. My main quibble is with the title: "Songs of Scotland." These songs may well be "from" Scotland...but they are not "of Scotland."

The music on "Songs of Scotland" is great--as long as you are looking for very English, semi-operatic readings of these Scottish songs.

Mrs. McLaughlin (an opera singer) sings beautifully; but in the style she is most accustomed too. Mr. Martineau certainly knows his way around a piano and as with Mrs. McLaughlin's singing, I find no fault in his playing here.

My quibble, which may well be minor to some...was that I expected much more "Scottish" sounding renditions of these songs; in this regard, I was disappointed.

This disc is OK in and of itself...recommendable even...but consider yourself warned. Now you know what you'll be getting.

5 out of 5 stars Finbar's . . . Love Songs of Island, all except 1!.......2003-06-18

I originally heard Finbar Furey's "Sweet Sixteen" and fell in love--with his voice, with the background music with Ireland. It was a Sunday and somehow this New York girl found the "Ceol na nGael" broadcast on NY's WFUV.

For one who isn't Irish, I was immediately smitten by a mysterious man singing the most beautiful rendition of When You Were Sweet Sixteen I had ever heard. I pursued with a passion finding out more about Finbar Furey (hoping I had correctly jotted this unusual name down properly) and learned that song was on his "Chasing Moonlight~Love Songs of Ireland" new release.

Do not think you must be Irish to fall in love with this artist or his music. I believe love trancends all barriers in life and music as well. Finbar's voice is soft, emotional, romantic and almost spiritual, so much so that you may find a tear forming in your eyes. The celtic musical background is heavenly.

That said, "Chasing Moonlight~Love Songs of Ireland" is as close to perfection on God's earth as one can get. However there is one flaw, number 7 on the CD, "New York Girls". How it found its way into this otherwise classic Irish work of art I will never know. Those with roots from Ireland may be more generous~but a semi-polka in the middle of romantic bliss? Come on now!

I have the CD playing now, and the Celtic sound, songs and instrumental works are caressing heart, bringing me to a place my soul wants to be. When it ends, I will replay it immediately for I want to stay there before time and obligation forces my life to its ordinary.

One thing I do know though, till then, when track 7 comes about I will awake from my daydreams, run across the room and immediately skip to track 8 on my CD player.

Still 5 stars though!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2006-09-15

There are three songs I don't remeber hearing before. I thoroughly enjoy this album. I especially enjoy the way Daniel sings LOVE ME TENDER, SMOOTH SAILIN', and HELLO DARLIN'.

Whatever Daniel sings is beautiful!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2003-06-18

Another great Classic Doubles collection of Daniel's beautiful easy-listening music I would not wish to be without. His music whether older recordings or his latest, never fail to give me enjoyment.

ESPECIALLY FOR YOU, released originally in 1994, has such a variety from old favorites like SILVER THREADS AMONG THE GOLD, SOMEDAY YOU'LL WANT ME TO WANT YOU, and SINGING THE BLUES to tunes I had never heard before. I really love all of the songs, but especially SHE GOES WALKING THROUGH MY MIND, BROKEN HEARTS ALWAY MEND, and NEVER BE ANYONE ELSE BUT YOU were meaningful. It is seldom that you find a collection that each and every track is loved, but this album would contend for the top of my list. I hate not to mention every song, and it is as if Daniel recorded it "especially for me". Many others probably feel the same way.

LOVE SONGS was released in 1998 and of course has some especially beautiful love songs like LOVE ME TENDER. Who can ever hear this too often, and though Daniel does it ever-so beautifully, he would probably be the first to say it will forever belong to Elvis. Daniel has a perfect voice for singing love songs, and FOR THE GOOD TIMES, THE WAY DREAMS ARE, SOMEWHERE, and LAY DOWN BESIDE ME are done with great tenderness and deep feeling. SPANISH EYES and SMOOTH SAILIN' are really special, too.

You cannot go wrong if you purchase this set, so please add it to your collection as soon as possible. You won't be sorry.

2 out of 5 stars After All These Years.......2002-09-15

After hearing this title on the radio a short while ago it literally captured my sentimental heart. I immediately went on line and purchased it. If you have a spouse you love and want to share the joy of the lyrics with him/her don't pass this one by.!!

4 out of 5 stars Foster & Allen hit a love song home run.......2000-04-20

Irish tenors, Foster and Allen, have created an album that speaks to the heart. Their soft voices are perfectly wedded to a collection of Irish and American traditional love songs.

The lead song, "After All These Years", is the Album's best. It speaks poignantly of a lifetime of love between man and wife. It's difficult to listen to this dry eyed.

The wistful "When I Dream" is a close second. It addresses the yearning for an unattained love.

Their light Irish accent adds to the charm of the upbeat songs like "Morning Glory".

How does this reviewer like this offering? I'm sending it to special friends, and I'm exploring other Foster and Allen offerings.

4 out of 5 stars I still love You Maureen O'Hara!.......2001-04-14

This is one of my favorite collections of old-time Irish/American love songs. The artists, largely unknown by today's younger generation, were very well known to American radio and TV audiences of the 40's 50's and 60's. Maureen O'Hara, Frank Parker, Pat Harrington, Carmel Quinn, Brendan O'Dowda, and Morton Downey all do what they did best for their time. But the best of the lot is the old movie super-star Maureen O'Hara, for years regarded as the Quintessential Irish Beauty. She performs the traditional ballads: COME BACK TO ERIN, DO YOU REMEMBER THAT NIGHT, LOVE? NEXT MARKET DAY, NORA LEE, I ONCE LOVED A BOY, GIVE HIM TO ME, and HE MOVED THROUGH THE FAIR with genuine style and grace. And Carmel Quinn's throaty renditions of DOONAREE, SPINNING WHEEL, and IF I WERE A BLACKBIRD are exceptional. This collection "Come Back to Erin," along with the companion CDs, "Kiss Me, I'm Irish" and "They Call it Ireland" are about the only places one can find O'Hara and Quinn these days, although I've noticed most of the others on various older LP and cassette collections.
