breath-taking.......2006-07-04
Evocative, enthralling.......2005-12-07
Connie Dover has a full, clear, rich voice that lets the song shine through even as she lets her voice shape it as it passes. You could not find a greater contrast to a voice like Eva Cassidy's. With Eva, I am sometimes overwhelmed at the stunning power and personality she weaves into her songs, indeed, many have commented that she makes a song her own. Connie Dover makes a song everyone's.
Her voice alone merits 5 stars. But the high quality of the (sometimes melancholy) material and the solid instrumentation are not just bonuses. This is effortless music with lots of musical effort beind it. The song selection is basically from Irish, Scottish and American folk music, with instruments appropriate to the genre. You'll hear some Gaelic and French in the vocals. And always with that pure clear voice.
If you're looking for something away from the rushing waters of American pop music, give her a try. There is a great deal of talent to be found off the main road, here in the backroads of folk music, at its best. "I took the road less traveled by and that has made all the difference." (Robert Frost) Take this road, and see where it takes you.

People who know Phil Coulter primarily for his orchestral arrangements of traditional Irish melodies on recordings such as Classic Tranquility and Celtic Tranquility may be surprised to discover he is also a songwriter of rare ability. The Songs I Love So Well is a collection of some of his personal favorites including "My Boy," which he wrote for Richard Harris's 1973 follow-up to MacArthur Park, and "Scorn Not His Simplicity," a moving song written for his son who was born with Down's syndrome. Also included is the duet with Ronan Keating, "The Town I Love So Well," which was voted one of the best songs of the last millennium in a poll in Ireland. On most of the tracks Coulter eschews his trademark lush instrumental sound in favor of stripped-down, intimate arrangements that are well suited to his limited vocal range. By emphasizing the meaning of the words over the prettiness of the melodies (and Coulter has composed some lovely tunes here), he delivers more powerful versions of these songs than a more "accomplished" singer might have done. But then most songwriters, even if they aren't the best singers around, give the best performances of their own songs. --Michael SimmonsCustomer Reviews:

Gorgeous CD.......2003-09-16
a disappointment from Hyperion.......2001-06-21
The music on "Songs of Scotland" is great--as long as you are looking for very English, semi-operatic readings of these Scottish songs.
Mrs. McLaughlin (an opera singer) sings beautifully; but in the style she is most accustomed too. Mr. Martineau certainly knows his way around a piano and as with Mrs. McLaughlin's singing, I find no fault in his playing here.
My quibble, which may well be minor to some...was that I expected much more "Scottish" sounding renditions of these songs; in this regard, I was disappointed.
This disc is OK in and of itself...recommendable even...but consider yourself warned. Now you know what you'll be getting.

Customer Reviews:
Finbar's . . . Love Songs of Island, all except 1!.......2003-06-18
For one who isn't Irish, I was immediately smitten by a mysterious man singing the most beautiful rendition of When You Were Sweet Sixteen I had ever heard. I pursued with a passion finding out more about Finbar Furey (hoping I had correctly jotted this unusual name down properly) and learned that song was on his "Chasing Moonlight~Love Songs of Ireland" new release.
Do not think you must be Irish to fall in love with this artist or his music. I believe love trancends all barriers in life and music as well. Finbar's voice is soft, emotional, romantic and almost spiritual, so much so that you may find a tear forming in your eyes. The celtic musical background is heavenly.
That said, "Chasing Moonlight~Love Songs of Ireland" is as close to perfection on God's earth as one can get. However there is one flaw, number 7 on the CD, "New York Girls". How it found its way into this otherwise classic Irish work of art I will never know. Those with roots from Ireland may be more generous~but a semi-polka in the middle of romantic bliss? Come on now!
I have the CD playing now, and the Celtic sound, songs and instrumental works are caressing heart, bringing me to a place my soul wants to be. When it ends, I will replay it immediately for I want to stay there before time and obligation forces my life to its ordinary.
One thing I do know though, till then, when track 7 comes about I will awake from my daydreams, run across the room and immediately skip to track 8 on my CD player.
Still 5 stars though!

Beautiful.......2006-09-15
Whatever Daniel sings is beautiful!!!!!!
Great Collection.......2003-06-18
ESPECIALLY FOR YOU, released originally in 1994, has such a variety from old favorites like SILVER THREADS AMONG THE GOLD, SOMEDAY YOU'LL WANT ME TO WANT YOU, and SINGING THE BLUES to tunes I had never heard before. I really love all of the songs, but especially SHE GOES WALKING THROUGH MY MIND, BROKEN HEARTS ALWAY MEND, and NEVER BE ANYONE ELSE BUT YOU were meaningful. It is seldom that you find a collection that each and every track is loved, but this album would contend for the top of my list. I hate not to mention every song, and it is as if Daniel recorded it "especially for me". Many others probably feel the same way.
LOVE SONGS was released in 1998 and of course has some especially beautiful love songs like LOVE ME TENDER. Who can ever hear this too often, and though Daniel does it ever-so beautifully, he would probably be the first to say it will forever belong to Elvis. Daniel has a perfect voice for singing love songs, and FOR THE GOOD TIMES, THE WAY DREAMS ARE, SOMEWHERE, and LAY DOWN BESIDE ME are done with great tenderness and deep feeling. SPANISH EYES and SMOOTH SAILIN' are really special, too.
You cannot go wrong if you purchase this set, so please add it to your collection as soon as possible. You won't be sorry.

After All These Years.......2002-09-15
Foster & Allen hit a love song home run.......2000-04-20
The lead song, "After All These Years", is the Album's best. It speaks poignantly of a lifetime of love between man and wife. It's difficult to listen to this dry eyed.
The wistful "When I Dream" is a close second. It addresses the yearning for an unattained love.
Their light Irish accent adds to the charm of the upbeat songs like "Morning Glory".
How does this reviewer like this offering? I'm sending it to special friends, and I'm exploring other Foster and Allen offerings.
