About the Artist
Bronn Journey, gentle master of the classical harp. Encouraged by his Welsh mother, he began studying harp, the national instrument of Wales, together with piano at an early age. Although he can play almost any instrument, he admits that Harp is the only instrument I'd dare to play for anyone, and adds that in choosing music to play, It's important to put the listener's feelings first. My Mother is of Welsh origin, and since the harp is considered the "national instrument" of Wales, it is not surprising that she encouraged me from the time I was 12 to study that most angelic of instruments. Naturally, the first music my fingers learned were traditional Welsh hymns and melodies. Most of the songs of Wales were written for the harp, and I was struck with how beautifully that music flows from the strings. So listen to this recording and picture yourself on a green hill in Wales, a castle in Scotland, or driving along a rocky coastline in Ireland.

Fans of acoustic folk would likely find the prevailing aesthetic a touch garish, but fans of Sarah Brightman and Il Divo will be diverted and thrilled. I have never heard such beautiful harmony and vocals! The music was just wonderful! The orchestra was outstanding! I have already decided that "The Prayer" is going to be sung at my wedding. I can't help but cry every time I hear that song sung by Chloe (I have already bought the sheet music for it:))There were a couple of songs that got a little boring but for the most part it was GREAT!!! The DVD is magnificent as well! It has about 6 or 7 more songs.

A great continuation of the first Celtic Woman album........2007-06-28

This is a CD that can be enjoyed by all who like M E H DI, E N Y A or even Loreena Mckinnett. After seeing them on PBS, getting the first CD and seeing them in concert I am hooked. These ladies can SING!
The bonus songs make the album definatly worth the extra few dollars...it includes the fun, upbeat, songs Celtic Woman performs at the ending of their live shows....I was so hoping they would put them on an album. Live or not, the sound quality is PERFECTION, they sound studio quality. I was a little hesistant at first about the addition of the new member...but she rounds the group up nicely.

I bought this DVD and CD as a gift for my husband's birthday. We saw a preview on public television and he immediately asked for it for his birthday. We already own the first Celtic Woman DVD and CD (also seen on public tv and purchased thru Amazon)and this is an amazing sequel to the original. All new music and a beautiful setting for this irish music. The women's voices are ethereal, very much worth listening to and watching over and over again.

This is a great album if you like CW. You will not find typically[traditional] Irish music; but it can be compared to a Las Vegas show.
There are some great easy-listening songs, with an upbeat twist. These
ladies do a great job harmonizing.

From the moment I first heard their Slane Castle concert on PBS, I LOVED Celtic Woman's music. They all have BEAUTIFUL voices. The youngest, Chloe, is amazing. I have this CD, the concert DVD that goes w/ it, their first concert on DVD (at the Helix in Dublin), and the CD that goes w/ it.

CD GREAT, SHIPPING NIGHTMARE.......2007-07-10

This CD, as everyone has previously mentioned, is absolutely awesome. I purchased two of the 'deluxe' editions, one for myself and one for my mother's 91st birthday. The shipping, direct from [...], was a disaster. They will say shipping dates are 'estimated,' however, they went far beyond that. I got an email after two weeks saying they were having some kind of unspecified problem filling the order and then got the product about 10 days after that. Totally unacceptable. I've always had excellent service from Amazon sellers (aftermarket), but I will certainly discourage my friends from giving me Amazon gift certificates in the future, as they have done in the past. Shame, Amazon!

You don't need to be part Irish to know these ladies are extremely talented,
and that they make outstanding music. The sound quality on the live tracks is very
good. I don't usually like recordings of live performances, because of the
general reduction of the track's sound quality, and that is not the case here.
I highly recommend this CD to anyone - Irish or not.

The Marvel of Meav!.......2007-06-27

I was suprised at how much I really liked this album, as I have thought of Meav as a bit of stiff-ly professional artist, but I was amazed by the way she uses her beautiful voice, and was pretty happy with the song sellections. Favorites are The Last Rose of Summer, I Dreamt I Dwelt in Marbled Halls, Danny Boy, Greensleeves, and Dante's Prayer. Dante's Prayer is my favorite track. It is just so-o beautiful. And her coverage of Danny Boy is the best I've ever heard. The only track I didn't care much for was Celtic Prayer -- it didn't showcase Meav's voice very well, and was rather sparse. Overall very stunning! Waste no time adding to your collection.

The work of artists from Ireland, Scotland, Brittany, Wales, Cape Breton Island, Galicia and America is featured in this primarily gentle and reflective collection featuring both accoustic and electronic instruments, as well as some vocals. Though mostly mellow, these evocative, heartfelt selections still command one's attention, leaving one yearning for more. The contributing musicians are William Coulter, Orion, The Barra MacNeils, 4 yn y Bar, Natalie MacMaster, Milladoiro, the Poozies, Maire Breatnach, Maighread Ni Dhomhmaill, William Jackson, John Whelan/Eileen Ivers, Altan, Deanta, Deiseal, Dominig Bouchaud, Cyrille Colas and Talitha MacKenzie. Especially poignant are Deanta's "Harvest of Culloden", Orion's "Douce Mousitomanie", Natalie MacMaster's "If Ever You Were Mine", and Maire Breatnach's "The Swans at Coole" and Dominig Bouchaud's "Une chanson a la mariee". Great introduction to Celtic world that just gets better.......2002-05-18

I first purchased this CD as an intro to Celtic music. Now, years later, it continues to be one of my favorite CDs. When I play the CD at parties or gatherings people stop talking and ask me the name of the CD. It is hard to keep it as background music, the performances are so compelling that you feel you must actively listen. Each track offers outstanding performances. A wonderful intro to the various groups and styles out there that continues to deliver enjoyment even after the tracks become familiar friends.

I recieved this album as a gift, and from day one I have absolulty loved it. Each song brings to mind a different place and a different time. Many of the songs are wonderful to lay down and listen to if I want to relax, and others seem to invigorate me. This is a must have for anyone who enjoys Celtic music or history, or for someone who just loves good music!

I think that Einini has to be one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, my only regret was that it ever had to end. Culloden's Harvest is heartbreakingly beautiful and the whole CD entranced me. I listen to it in the evenings when I get home, and it never fails to soothe me no matter what ills have befallen me through the day. I recommend it not just for Celtic music fans, but for anyone that loves beautiful music. My heartfelt thanks to all the artists.

Dónal Lunny (pronounced "Loony") is a guitar and bouzouki virtuoso, composer, bandleader, producer, and promoter who has founded, sat in with, recorded, and presented more than 30 years' worth of epoch-making Irish acts. Of course, a two-CD compilation cannot adequately relate his entire story, but this one makes a good start and even better listening. Many of his important band affiliations are represented, including the Bothy Band, Planxty, Moving Hearts (an especially legendary outfit), and Coolfin. Runnin' With the Best of the Irish Players.......2002-04-20

If you had one name to run in a poll to name the single person who had the greatest influence over the development of modern Irish music. That name would be Dónal Lunny from Co. Kildare. His plethora of occupations include guitar, bouzouki & bodhrán player, composer, arranger, band leader, producer and musical director. What set him apart is the innovation and experimentation during the 1960's with different blend and technique of guitar chords.

In those early 60's his career took off followed after a short spell with the band Emmet Spiceland. He then met up with Christy Moore. There it all began to blossom into the most influential music and one of the best Irish composers today. Each of his creative and original bands, Planxty, the Bothy Band, Moving Hearts, and just recently Coolfin. The electic talent has been so successful that it redefines the current state of the Irish arts. His music links to idioms as Breton, West African, Mediterranean Europe and contemporary rock to hip hop. All of these are reflected in his composition and styling of his work. His production work is very diverse as he has the likes of Altan, Elvis Costello, country artist Emmylou Harris and Mark Knopler.

This album highlights more than 25 years of his performing career. Also presents performances with Christy Moore, Sharon Shannon, Brian Kennedy, Ireland's fiddle master Natalie MacMaster and Andy Irvine. This also features the unreleased version of 'Millenium Suite' by Coolfin. Even includes the 9 minute epic 'Tribute to Peadar O'Donnell.' With everything like this that lays the foundation of excellent Irish contemporary sound has made it's place in the modern music industry. This 2 set CD gathers together some of the best work composed during the span of 2 decades. This is truly a journey to experience. This would be a great addition to anyone's collection who appreciates fine music.

Bring on the bouzouki!.......2001-04-14

Although this cd set includes tunes from the phemonmenal Bothy Band from 20 years ago, as well as Moving Hearts, and some other assembled musicians, this all sounds fresh and new. This is a perfect follow up to Donal's last effort, Coolfin, with many of the same superb musicians that appeared on that cd: John McSherry, Nollaig Casey, Sharon Shannon, for example. You can't go wrong with this, if you like Irish music played with passion by musicians willing and able to bend the rules.

Once again these guys have pulled it off again! I didnt think
that the "Other Side" could be topped! The cover soundtrack
"Ratty Shoes" starts off with newcomer Michael Boyce singing
lead vocals and will bring your heart right back to Ireland. From Paul Moore's "Jig Junk" to the insanely talented John McGroary ( and I truely meant that) on button acordian with "Clearmountain Aire" gets your feet in steppin gear! But you
have to see these guys "live", unbelievable energy is put out

When I first saw Blackthorn, it was in their natural habitit, on stage. A great, jumping pub act, I was promptly hooked on these Philadelphia Irish rockers. Their first album, The Other Side, was very good, but lacked the polish of a major recording artist. The followup, Ratty Shoes, suffers from none of the occassional awkwardness of that first record. The production is first rate and the songs are up to the increased scrutiny. From the bouncy pub stompers like the title track, to the traditional button-accordian instrumentals, to the reflective ballads like "The Border", this album is a complete package that truly defines Blackthorn as a band ready to break into the mainstream. The balance between rock and roll and traditional Irish folk sounds is just right, with neither overwhelming the other. Tying it all together is Paul Moore's passionate, homespun vocals. Black 47 and The Saw Doctors need to make room, because Blackthorn have just joined them on the top step of the Irish Rock genre.

Blackthorn does it again ..........2001-12-27

The lads from Philly & Ireland have done it again. Although I have long been waiting for the new release, I was apprehensive that they wouldn't be able to top their spectacular original debut, The Other Side. But the boys have proven me wrong - quite simply, this album is fantastic.

From Moore's magical storytelling, to the Boyce Brothers' pop/country tunes, McGroary's reels, Seamus Kelleher's' electrifying guitar work and Mike O'Callaghan keeping the beat (and writing a new tune), this record does not have a single weak spot on it. Personally, I have always been a huge fan of Paul Moore's songwriting, but there are no slouches in this band.

Very highly recommended for fans of Celtic music, pop music and/or country music. And if you can, catch the boys live - it's something to see.

If you're a JJ fan, you have to have this one. The first 4 songs are as good as anything Jeff and Co. have ever done. 'Vows' from the movie "Gangs of New York" is an exciting song and the hidden song 'Aidan's Dream' is a first rate vocal effort. If you're not a Jeff Johnson fan - you need to be. Do something good for *you* today - pick this one up.

Good in places, but disappointing.......2003-03-15

The Johnson/Dunning teaming on the CD, Celtic Legends: Bard & Warrior was a delight in the celtic music genre. I looked forward to this follow-up CD, perhaps with a little too much anticipation because I was somehat disappointed. Use of the spoken word with annoying chants at what appears to be odd times detract from the music. Stick to Celtic Legends, and hope their next CD is better.

Intriguing, questful music!.......2002-11-30

These compositions are based on Stephen R. Lawhead's novel "Byzantium", which concerns a group of Celtic monks traveling to far Byzantium, bearing the Book of Kells. Hopeful, expectant "wandering music" is tinged with mystery and mixed with eastern motifs. This release maintains Johnson and Dunning's gentle touch, but it has a more exotic, driving and deeper tone than their earlier CD, "Music of Celtic Legends: The Bard and the Warrior", also inspired by the work of Lawhead. The evolution is compelling though, and eminently suitable to the story. These compositions contain more vocals and acoustic instrumentation too, including John Fitzpatrick on violin, the chanting of Janet Chvatal, and Omar Faruk Tekbilek on percussion and vocals. Particularly intriguing is the innovative and rousing "Sea Wolves", a dissonant duet between violin and flute reminiscent of modern chamber music, set above a rousing, steady drum rhythm. And Dunning does some really nice, varying work on his flutes on this CD, from biting and breathy "Jethro Tull" style techniques to the deep, haunting effects of what sound like alto and bass flutes. If you like storytelling music, check out also the compelling "Avalon: A Celtic Legend" and "Music Inspired by Middle Earth" by Diane and David Arkenstone, and the passionate "A Celtic Tale: The Legend of Deirdre" and "A Celtic Romance: The Legend of Liadain and Curithir" by the Danna brothers.

Delightful.......2002-05-15

Byzantium, is a wonderful c.d. based on the book "Byzantium." Having read the book, which is about an Irish monk and his travels, I can say that this c.d. captures it. Each track causes emotions to arise. The music makes a person want to break into a dance, travel to exotic lands, but then ponder their life. I reccommend both the book and the c.d. The two will have great impact.

Powerfully moving music.......2002-04-24

All I can say after an extended session, listening to the CD mulitple times is "Wow." It grows on me and each time I listen I am more moved. I didn't realize Jeff Johnson is a committed Christian until I looked at his web site for ArkMusic. His faith shines through the music. Be sure and listen to the hidden song in the last track. Jeff wrote it as a tribute to his best friend who died of cancer. A powerful testimony to his faith. Well worth getting.

Album Description

I focused on my favorite places across North Carolina and traveled there for inspiration. Using my guitar, Celtic whistles and piano I composed 14 songs. Later other layers of instrumentation were added including cello, violin, hammered dulcimer, flute, saxophone, bass, organ and percussion by a group of outstanding musicians.

Next, I took a digital tape deck and returned to many of these spots and recorded natural sounds that reminded me of these treasured locations. I have woven together many of these sounds into the fabric of the songs. Sounds of waterfalls, rushing rivers, tin roof rain, migratory songbirds, tundra swans and distant trains add a vibrant thread of realism to the melodies.

What a warm and "Peaceful Journey" this has been for me! Thank you for traveling with me for sojourns at Ocracoke, Montreat, Kanuga, Lake Mattamuskeet, Bath, Roan Mountain, Roaring Gap, Morganton, the Roanoke River, Grandfather Mountain and other locations.

A beautiful piece of work and such a wonderful representation of North Carolina. With each play, you hear something you did not hear previously. The combination of music and natural sounds sets a mood that is very unique. Bill Leslie is known to us in North Carolina as a trusted reporter and native of our great state. Integrating natural sounds with original tunes written for flute, acoustic guitar, cello, violin, piano and hammered dulcimer, Leslie has created a masterpiece honoring the North Carolina landscape he loves so much. Beautiful Journey.......2005-07-17

I just saw Jennifer Cutting perform with the equally incredible Grace Griffith (who does vocals on the album) and the Ocean Orchestra at a store in Hagerstown, MD outside Washington D.C. Jennifer richly deserves all the awards she has won! I, like all in the audience, was blown away! This is truly a transcendent body of work that transports the listener to a magical place in one's soul. I purchased four copies of this CD as Christmas presents for friends.

I also recommend the groups Connemara and The New St. George, and the solo projects of Grace Griffith who, despite the young onset of Parkinson's Disease, has an otherworldly angelic voice and an inspiringly wonderful spirit. In short, listening to this cd will make you feel so good in so many ways. My love, best wishes and gratitude to all involved in this project.

This composition is a truly magical mystical hero's journey into haunting and healing melodies and lyrics! From the cover art, the liner notes, quotations, and without question the music one is immediately taken with the first sounds of the waves and the siren's voice calling you to discover what is next on this wonderful composition. It took composer and keyboardist Jennifer Cutting seven years and several Atlantic crossings to complete her "Ocean" journey, to meld sea and soul, myth and music into a thoroughly absorbing listening experience. It may take the rest of us nearly as long to fully appreciate the achievement.

No mere folksy, salt-water song cycle, "Ocean: Songs for the Night Sea Journey" is an album-length enchantment, orchestrated with great care, imagination and color. Cutting, well known in folk-rock circles for her tenure with the New St. George, wrote or arranged all of the music, drawing from sources as diverse as J.S. Bach, Gustav Holst and fusion guitarist Steve Morse. Among her own compositions is "Forgiveness," a splendid showcase for special guest Maddy Prior's soulful soprano. But the Steeleye Span vet isn't the only singer who leaves a deep impression.. Grace Griffith brings an angelic voice and yearning emotions to several ballads, beginning with the welcome unearthing of an ancient Irish song, "The Gladdest Breeze." Singers Polly Bolton and Lisa Moscatiello also contribute to the album's haunting charms, while Bulgarian vocalist Tatiana Sarbinska and the Washington-based women's ensemble Slaveya create a spellbinding weave all their own on "Neptune Reel / Woman of the House." Surrounding Cutting is a stellar cast of instrumentalists, many of them based in the Washington area, who share her talent for gracefully incorporating traditional and contemporary influences.

In the liner notes to "Ocean," Cutting writes: "May you lose yourself in its changing waters, only to find yourself again, renewed and restored." It's a wish fulfilled.
