In a simple and unpretentious set of songs for voice and slack-key guitar, Dennis Kamakahi shows why the music of Hawaii has such an allure for people around the world. Joined by his son David (ukulele and vocals) on a number of tracks, this guitarist exhibits excellent musicianship, warm personality, and a love of family and the music that comes from it. The set includes original songs in traditional styles, some classic Hawaiian tunes (including a lovely version of Queen Liliuokalani's "Moanalua"), and the almost-required pop or show tune, in this case an interesting instrumental duet of the theme song from the movie "Around the World in 80 Days," a showcase for David Kamakahi's wonderful ukulele style. Dennis's version of the traditional mele "He 'Ai No Kalani" shows off his jaunty country style of picking the guitar, and a tune he picked up from his time with Eddie Kamae's Sons of Hawaii band. Narciso Yepes is my favorite classical guitarist. I was delighted to hear a couple guitar concertos I had never heard before. Ohana, Bacarisse, and Ruiz-Pipo were great discoveries. Again, Yepes is the BEST. Strongly recommended.

The late Narciso Yepes is perhaps my favorite guitarist- Spanish or otherwse. With each of his recordings there is the sense of a madman, master, and poet at one with his instrument. I recently purchased "Guitarra espagnola" and have found endless enjoyment listening critically and as background while I work. This is the perfect "not background music" background music to play when you have guests. You and your guests will find yourself withdrawing from lively conversations to enjoy a poignant, sweet, or sinister moment with the music. This is a compilation of recordings from the past 20 to 30 years. The compositions span from the 17th to 20th century. The quality of the recordings is very good but at times varied. The availability of the compilation is very limited. Get it while you can! I also recommend Alirio Diaz and John Williams.

I cannot recommend this retrospective of just a small amount of Yepes's work highly enough.

No matter what popular and lay opinions may be about Williams, Bream, Segovia, and others, the greatest classical guitarist of the 20th century was Narciso Yepes. It is a pity and a shame that the fear of the older generation of guitarists and their associates made Yepes a marginal figure.

He was a consummate technician and a knowledgeable interpreter of all musical idioms from the Middle Ages through to the height of the 20th Century avant-garde. His playing was characterized by intelligence, sensibility, clarity, power, majesty, poetry, and a devilish ability to separate and sustain contrapuntal lines.

In this box of 5 CDs you will find the definitive performance of Rodrigo's now famous "Aranjuez" concerto, which, incidentally, was first recorded and made famous by Yepes. There are also 2 CDs with rare concertos by Salvador Bacarisse, Antonio Ruiz-Pipo, and Maurice Ohana.

The other 3 CD's contain generally the best performances of the canon of solo guitar works that you are likely to find. The composers include Sanz, Mudarra, Narvaez, Soler, Sor, Albeniz, Granados, Tarrega, De Falla, Turina, Bacarisse, Rodrigo, Llobet, Pujol, Moreno Torroba, Montsalvatge, Ohana, and Ruiz-Pipo.

Brilliant Hawaiian Master.......2007-01-10

I was first introduced to Dennis Kamakahi as he toured with Led Kapana and Cyril Pahinui on the 2006 Hawaiian Slack Key Masters Tour. I was immediately struck by his superb vocals. This album does not disappoint!!
Playing with his son, he showcases his exquisite song writing in his own voice, which is certainly in the same league with Keola Beamer, Kei'eli Reichel and Pahlani Vaughn. In addition he explains the music between songs, giving those not so familar with Hawaiian language, music and culture a basic framework in which to listen. One need not be a fan of Hawaiian music to enjoy this disk; if you are. it is a must-have for your collection.

Keeping the tradition.......2006-07-31

How exciting to be able to pass the love for the old kine music down to your son! Dennis and David both show their musical artistry on this album. There is probably no greater living Hawaiian songwriter than Dennis Kamakahi. His mastery of the poetry is unrivaled. The legacy continues with David, who is able to showcase his ukulele virtuosity on this CD. Their rendition of Ulili E is the best I have ever heard. Too bad, though, that they do not record the stories behind the songs, as well. But make sure you read the liner notes. The "talk story" makes these songs even more exciting. A must have for any lover of ki ho`alu and any Hawaiian music.

My favorite CD.......2001-09-28

I received this CD as a present from my daughter two months ago, fell in love with it, and have listened to it daily since. The wonderfully mellow voices of both Dennis and David and superb slack key guitar and ukele playing just make all daily task so pleasant. I have since listened to several other Hawaiin slack key guitarists, but this remains my favorite. I eagerly await more CD's with this father/son duo.

I own many slack key recordings and this may be my favorite, it has it all. His recording of 'Ulili E is my favorite slack key song and definately the best version of this traditional song ever recorded.

Even though Dennis is gone, Hui 'Ohana lives on!.......2004-07-26

It was a great idea to put a 'Best Of' Hui 'Ohana complilation CD together. Many of the early recordings are on this disc, including my personal favorite, Ku'u Home 'O Kahalu'u.

With Dennis gone now, it was heart warming to listen to the old melodies and think back to when these performances were originally recorded. The harmonies will live on forever, thanks to compilation CD's like this one.

Every tita of a certain age should have this Hui Ohana CD.......2007-03-01

Okay, I love the Brothers Caz and Amy and all of them but hands down this is the one that takes me back to my "hanabata" days. This is some down home, funky falsetto, get with the poke and poi action traditional Hawaiian fare from DEEEEEEP in Hawaii (back when sweet 'ole Kalapana and Kaimu were still above the lava - auwe!). I blast this when I'm driving home from work on the 405 freeway. It's a must have for any fan of Hawaiian music!

Great music, terrible sound quality.......2001-11-08

First off, the sound quality. Almost everything Lehua Records has released on CD has sounded terrible. They recently reissued the group's first five albums on CD, and I'm not sure if it's because the masters don't exist, but I'd rather listen to the vinyl, which is superior sounding.

Because of this fact, I have to take away three stars. But as far as the group, the vocals, and their music, it deserves a five. Their style of Hawaiian music was from the Big Island, and the two brothers (Ledward and Nedward Ka'apana) and their cousin (Dennis Pavao) had a style that was all their own. It was also a style that would be imitated countless times through their existence in the 70's. This CD has a number of their great songs, including "Sweet Lei Mokihana", "Pua Lililehua", and the tearjerker "God Bless My Daddy/Mom".

Memories Brought Back.......2001-06-16

It was a treat for us to enjoy watching this group do these same songs live on the Big Island when they first got started. We were able to get an original 33; and now have the CD which brings back memories from years past, and can now take them with us where ever we go.

Anyone who loves traditional hawaiian music, performed by local bands, deserves to have this one in their collection.

Hui Ohana, comprised of Ledward and Nedward Kaapana and Dennis Pavao sing in beautiful falsetto and tenor, play slack key, and bring the warm breezes of the islands into your home. You won't find any better, authentic old style (or new) Hawaiian music.

Wonderful island sounds.......2001-05-30

This is an excellent album. Good contemporary Hawaiian sounds, well played and sung. It's a pity that most people think of Don Ho instead Hawaiian Style Band or Iz or Hapa when it comes to the music of Hawai'i.

Great CD.......2000-09-26

This CD is not as great as their first two, but nevertheless has lots of upbeat contemporary songs. It has a lot of nice 'island' music for those who are away from the islands and homesick or if you just want a taste of some contemporary, popular island music.

This is perfect "background" music to have playing while reading or just relaxing. My upmost favorite nighttime music.

A Sampling of Brilliant Bream.......2001-02-03

This is a sampler, a cross section, if you will, from The Julian Bream Edition, a 28-CD set of guitar performances, which spans the period from early music to the 20th century. If you're not prepared to go the whole set, the fine performances on this CD cut across the spectrum of guitar compositions.

One note of caution, there are no liner notes for the pieces on this CD. What is included is basically a promo piece for the whole collection. Also, by the way, this particular CD opens backwards.
