Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Barbara Cook is one of today's most accomplished song stylists, and if you don't believe us, just listen to this live album. It's a master class in the art of singing. It documents an evening at Carnegie Hall during which Cook proved that she can dissect and extract the substance out of the simplest of lyrics. One of the best surprises is "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" (from Company), which is taken at an amiable trot and allows the singer to display its humor. Cook is not a swinging singer and uptempo is not her pace; give her a ballad, though, and she'll wring the last drop of emotion out of it. Her version of "Losing My Mind" (here paired with "Not a Day Goes By") is simply astonishing. The singer also performs songs that Sondheim has said he wished he had written, an awful lot of them by Harold Arlen. No complaints here. Guest Malcolm Gets solos on a few songs and duets with Cook on others, including "Let's Face the Music and Dance." This is classic material done masterfully by a classic singer. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2004-02-20

Having read the other reviews there is little more for me to add. I have been a Barbara Cook fan for a longtime and for me, this is one of her best concerts ever. I do, however, prefer the DVD. As with some other reviewers, I do not want to hear Malcolm Gets (as much as I like him) when I want to listen to Barbara. Her flawless interpretation of music is a hard act to follow for any singer! I managed to see this concert 4 times over a year and a half. Each time I saw her the voice was stronger and more assured (I would not have thought that possible). I can't help but think we will have the pleasure of hearing Ms Cook for many years to come. For those people who enjoyed his CD I strongly recommend purchasing the DVD. Barabara's rendition of So Many People is breathtaking (literally, I don't think I breathed once during the entire song). If you ever have opportunity to see her live - go! She has an ability to make you feel as if every song she sings and every word she speaks is directed to you alone. She can take a large venue and make it feel as intimate as your own living room. Having had the pleasure of meeting her I can say she is as youthful and pleasurable in person as she is in her performance.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone Should Whistle.......2003-10-11

After being privileged to attend this concert, I had to own the CD. Once a lyric coloratura and the original Cunegonde in Bernstein's Candide, Ms. Cook has become (in her 70s) a true diva, blessed with a velvety, warm sound. Every note has meaning. Her high B-flat on "Ice Cream" is still the envy of any soprano today. Everyone should whistle after hearing the superb performances on this CD. Even better, though, is the experience of having been in the concert hall for the live performance. Brava, Ms. Cook!

5 out of 5 stars An amazing intro to the body of work of a true master.......2003-06-16

When I first bought tickets for the 'Mostly Sondheim' show on tour (in San Francisco) I figured it couldn't be too bad. Besides, I had only been exposed to a few of his songs (Anyone Can Whistle, Losing My Mind...) and had only seen "A Little Night Music". On the way out of the theater I immediately picked up this recording of the program. It is truly amazing. I immediately began listening to it and have barely put it down in the last few months. Furthermore, my Sondheim CD collection increased in size from an unflattering zero to five (and it's still growing)! This is an amazing introduction to the works of Stephen Sondheim, who is now my favorite modern musical composer). Buy this now if you don't already have it!

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful, moving concert.......2003-04-13

This is a wonderful CD set with a great selection of songs. I do want to express a slight reservation, however. Barbara Cook has been one of my favorite singers for a number of years and the way her voice defies time is extraordinary -- for her to be singing with such bright, beautiful tone in her mid-70s with no wobble or beat in the voice is an amazing achievment.

I do have to say that by 2001, when this concert was recorded, Cook seemed to have a lost a little bit of power and intensity in her singing. This is only natural for someone of her age. Her voice is still lovely, but you can sense her keeping it in reserve a bit. She's as expressive as ever, but compare the rendition of "I got lost in his arms" on this album to the one on her previous album recorded in 1999, "The Champion Season", and there's less urgency and vocal depth in her singing here. That said, the high B at the end of "Ice Cream" is sensational.

So, despite that caveat, this is, again, a wonderful album, a must for Cook fans, especially for the gorgeous renditions of songs I'd never thought I'd get to hear her perform: "Not a Day Goes By", "Happiness/Loving You", "San Francisco", etc. Buy it!

1 out of 5 stars ... and I love Barbara Cook.......2003-02-11

This recording is a disappointment for me. It is not her best work, and Malcolm Gets is uninspired. My biggest complaint however is the engineering of the recording. Throughout the speaking was to soft, the singing volumes uneven, and the applause deafening. I will be passing this CD on to friends, and will later donate it to my local library.

5 out of 5 stars Painless and Pleasant.......2000-08-19

It's not that I hate opera, it's rather that I cannot handle and entire opera without nodding off. This 4 disc CD provides highlights from the most famous and recognizable arias, i.e., Pagliacci, Carmen, Rigoletto, Madame Butterfly, La Boheme, The Mikado, and H.M.S. Pinafore -- just to mention a few. I appreciate the ability to enjoy select arias from some of the most beautiful and and exceptional operas in the world, and played by first class orchestras, without having to sit through the entire opera.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A 1979 CLASSIC!!!...still!.......2004-07-17

This is by far the most entertaining Village People album the group ever put together. The live stuff is good fun...even if "Y.M.C.A." has been played to death by every DJ, sporting event and wedding reception known to mankind. That said, "In The Navy," "Hot Cop" et al. are well done.

The true GREATNESS of this one comes from the studio cuts that are simply the best tunes Village People ever released. My favorite all-time VP song (hands down) is "Rock N' Roll Is Back Again." I saw them "perform" this on Dick Clark's 'New Year's Rockin' Eve '79-'80" and was floored. I also saw them do it (another lip-synch) on the Playboy Roller Disco Party at Hef's pad in '79...and it killed! CLASSIC non-disco Village People (although the beat is still there!)

The other great songs: "Ready For The '80's," (another VP Classic!)"Save Me," (Alex Briley-led ballad deluxe) and "Sleazy" (David Hodo's grimy sleazefest) have lost none of their shine in the 25 years since they were unleashed. The one down moment is the uptempo version of "Save Me" which simply sounds like filler for lack of material.

Village People were all about fun. Campy and exagerated. No more - no less. I never cared that their sexual habits got more publicity than their music. This album is ALL about the music.

Listen to "Live And Sleazy" and you'll hear one of the last great gasps of the dying disco phenomenon. Too bad in a way because it sure sounds likes Village People were just hitting their stride. ENJOY!

5 out of 5 stars A Guilty Treat!.......2003-06-20

I'm not ashamed to confess that the this was the first CD I ever purchased. That said, I will also stipulate that it's the only disco CD in our collection that was not purchased by my wife.

But what the heck, this is fun listenable music! If you can listen to the Village People without the urge to bust a move or two (whether in private or public) you just don't have rhythm. Classic hits like YMCA and In the Navy still get radio play from time to time, but this collection of live performances will make you wonder how this group could ever have faded away from the music scene. Forget the camp, forget the costumes! Just listen to some outstanding, upbeat tunes!

5 out of 5 stars A Real Gem.......2001-07-04

I'm not the biggest disco fan, but I do enjoy old music once in awhile. The Village People prove on this CD that they're more than just YMCA and In the Navy. These guys really didn't take themselves too seriously, but they sure had fun.

My favorite songs are Hollywood and Ready for the 80's. I wasn't alive when these guys were big, but it doesn't mean their music is lost. Buy this CD used and enjoy the heck out of it when you've been drinking too much; it's fun.

5 out of 5 stars Cool.......2000-10-20

I was born after these guys broke up, but that doesnt mean that i dont enjoy disco. I heard this album by accident, and bought it because it's essentially a "best of" album. With great hits like "Macho Man," "In the Navy," and of course "Y.M.C.A," this CD gets you dancing. Although I'm not really a fan of the "Save Me" ballad, i can respect the fact that these six unique individuals have the ability to slow down the pace as well as kicking it with their better known up tempo disco. This CD just puts me in a good mood, so I encourage everyone, young and old, to buy it.

5 out of 5 stars I Remember When............2000-10-15

Even though the original songs were released more than 20 years ago, it still gets your heart pumping and remembering "when"....

Into excercise? Put this bad boy on and pedal your bike or Nordic track yourself into a frenzy!

My particular favorite is "Save Me" done as a ballad. It's not what you expect from them...

Geez, I love "disco"...what ever happened to the Village People?

Elaine Paige headlines the international cast of Masterpiece: The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, a September 2001 concert in Beijing. Paige sings songs from her roles in Lloyd Webber's musicals Evita, and Sunset Boulevard, while Kris Phillips, Sandy Lam, Tony Vincent, and others provide solid but rarely thrilling renditions of tunes from such shows as Jesus Christ Superstar and Phantom of the Opera. Indeed, other than the legitimacy provided by Paige, there's not a whole lot to distinguish Masterpiece from the many other Lloyd Webber tributes and compilations. The primary distinction may be the fact that the concert is also available on DVD, which more than doubles the CD's 54-minute running time. The CD is really not much more than a promotion for the DVD, a point proven by the inclusion of a bonus DVD that samples two performances (Phillips's "The Music of the Night" and Lam's "I Don't Know How to Love Him"). Better, then, to simply get the DVD, or the DVD and CD combo for a cheaper price than when they're purchased separately. --David Horiuchi

2 out of 5 stars Not very good at all.......2006-05-07

This is a very poor concert. There are only two actually good women singers, the older woman who sings "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" and the young woman who sings "Wishing you were Somehow Here again" and the duet of "All I ask of you" is actually VERY good, I would definitly listen to her more. Again, there are only one or two half decent male singers "Sunset boulavard" for instance. The singers that are also in the chorus who have solos are very bad, the songs "Jesus Christ Superstar" "The Music of the Night" "And the money kept rolling in" "I don't know how to love him" "Memory" are all just plain bad. If you are really interested, I sudgest trying to find it in your library, it is just not worth paying ANYTHING to buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Missing one star for its completeness.......2006-04-09

Let's begin with a little detail on the concert first. This is the highlight recording of "Masterpiece: The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber live in Beijing" which took place at the Great Hall of the People in September 2001. There are 4 main singers here: Elaine Paige, Tony Vincent, Kris Philips (Fei Xiang) and Sandy Lam. Besides from the 4 main singers, there are also an ensemble cast of 12-16 people which I believe are from Australia.

The whole concert is almost 3 hours in length with over 30 songs from almost all the works by Andrew Lloyd Webber including the latest show by Webber back then which was "The Beautiful Game". Missing only Starlight Express and By Jeeves. Here comes the bad part, only 13 were chosen to be on the CD and Miss Sandy Lam's song isn't even on the recording!!! There are some other truly wonderful performance that were left off the recording. For example, Tony Vincent's "And the Money Kept Rolling", the ensemble's "Let Us Love in Peace" and Miss Paige's "The Heart Is Slow to Learn", just to name a few

Still, there are some really nice performance captured in the CD. Elaine's "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" and "As If We Never Said Goodbye" are quite good but I have heard better versions out there. Tony Vincent's "Jesus Christ Superstar" is really awesome. That shouldn't be a big surprise since he was Judas in the Broadway Revival of JCS. Another of my favourite is Helen Walsh with her take on "Take That Look off Your Face". That was quite a performance. The other outstanding one is Lisa Crosato with her rendition of "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again". Then there's a great treat when both of them sang a duet together in "Pie Jesu". It was so beautiful. Thank goodness they didn't leave this one out.

Besides from the audio part, there are also sample clips from the concert: Kris Philip's "The Music of the Night" and Sandy Lam's "I Don't Know How to Love Him". Amazon said that it comes in a form of a bonus DVD. Mine's more of an enhanced-CD, if you pop the CD into the computer, then the bonus clips will play. That's quite a nice treat. But wouldn't it be better to just buy the DVD?

So, to sum all of that up, I'd recommend you to go and get the DVD if you're interested in the concert. I didn't hate this recording or anything but just wish that it would be more complete.

        3 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2002-09-29

I saw the TV Special and the CD is missing some of the better pieces of music. Disppointing. I thought the CD would contain all of the music from the TV special and purchased it before its release. Had i known that songs like "The Heart is Slow to Learn" would not be included, I would have saved my money - the recorded songs are pretty much the same pieces that have been recorded before.

          Album Description

The Indigenous People's new CD Captured Live In Brazil (Jazzateria #20301-2) is proof of his unique jazz vision. His Indigenous People group mines the rich history of African diasporic music, from African folk melodies, Brazilian and Caribbean grooves to American jazz, funk and go-go rhythms. Cary states: "Our intention on this CD was to capture the spirit of our people and perpetuate their energy through our music." At times recalling flashes of electric Herbie Hancock, Weather Report and 60's and 70's excursions by musical trend-setters like Donald Byrd and Cannonball Adderly, Captured Live In Brazil is an expansive exploration of groove by the young keyboardist and bandleader, who shines on acoustic piano, Fender Rhodes and Moog. From the pensive, wide-open opener "Rain Dance" to the percussion-heavy "Indigenous People Pt. II", Cary's new group is with him every step of the way, surrounding him as a living, breathing musical organism.

Band Members: marc cary, tarus mateen bass, daniel moreno percussion, yarbrough charles laws flute & percussion, & johan rucker drums.

5 out of 5 stars Marc Cary and Indigenous: I really dig your sound.......1999-08-15

Marc Cary and Indigenous: I really dig your sound. I think it's hip and progressive, espcially in light of the many rather stale recordings of the past few years. I'm a big fan of Bird, Trane, Miles, Wayne Shorter, Eric Dolphy, Cecil Taylor, Albert Ayler! , Marion Brown, Jimmy Smith, and Lonnie Smith. I threw out these names b/c I think you guys capture the essence of several of the greats from a variety of jazz genres, while at the same time producing your own hype sound. I've got a lot of repspect for yo! u guys, Don Byron, and other young cats. Thanks for the great music!

5 out of 5 stars Cary is outstanding...again.......1999-06-24

Marc Cary has done it again. This young brother is one of the most creative and talented pianist and composers o the scene. This particular CD is superb. My only complaint is that there weren't enough tracks.
