Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Barbara Cook is one of today's most accomplished song stylists, and if you don't believe us, just listen to this live album. It's a master class in the art of singing. It documents an evening at Carnegie Hall during which Cook proved that she can dissect and extract the substance out of the simplest of lyrics. One of the best surprises is "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" (from Company), which is taken at an amiable trot and allows the singer to display its humor. Cook is not a swinging singer and uptempo is not her pace; give her a ballad, though, and she'll wring the last drop of emotion out of it. Her version of "Losing My Mind" (here paired with "Not a Day Goes By") is simply astonishing. The singer also performs songs that Sondheim has said he wished he had written, an awful lot of them by Harold Arlen. No complaints here. Guest Malcolm Gets solos on a few songs and duets with Cook on others, including "Let's Face the Music and Dance." This is classic material done masterfully by a classic singer. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

An amazing intro to the body of work of a true master.......2003-06-16
Beautiful, moving concert.......2003-04-13
I do have to say that by 2001, when this concert was recorded, Cook seemed to have a lost a little bit of power and intensity in her singing. This is only natural for someone of her age. Her voice is still lovely, but you can sense her keeping it in reserve a bit. She's as expressive as ever, but compare the rendition of "I got lost in his arms" on this album to the one on her previous album recorded in 1999, "The Champion Season", and there's less urgency and vocal depth in her singing here. That said, the high B at the end of "Ice Cream" is sensational.
So, despite that caveat, this is, again, a wonderful album, a must for Cook fans, especially for the gorgeous renditions of songs I'd never thought I'd get to hear her perform: "Not a Day Goes By", "Happiness/Loving You", "San Francisco", etc. Buy it!
... and I love Barbara Cook.......2003-02-11

A 1979 CLASSIC!!!...still!.......2004-07-17
The true GREATNESS of this one comes from the studio cuts that are simply the best tunes Village People ever released. My favorite all-time VP song (hands down) is "Rock N' Roll Is Back Again." I saw them "perform" this on Dick Clark's 'New Year's Rockin' Eve '79-'80" and was floored. I also saw them do it (another lip-synch) on the Playboy Roller Disco Party at Hef's pad in '79...and it killed! CLASSIC non-disco Village People (although the beat is still there!)
The other great songs: "Ready For The '80's," (another VP Classic!)"Save Me," (Alex Briley-led ballad deluxe) and "Sleazy" (David Hodo's grimy sleazefest) have lost none of their shine in the 25 years since they were unleashed. The one down moment is the uptempo version of "Save Me" which simply sounds like filler for lack of material.
Village People were all about fun. Campy and exagerated. No more - no less. I never cared that their sexual habits got more publicity than their music. This album is ALL about the music.
Listen to "Live And Sleazy" and you'll hear one of the last great gasps of the dying disco phenomenon. Too bad in a way because it sure sounds likes Village People were just hitting their stride. ENJOY!
A Guilty Treat!.......2003-06-20
But what the heck, this is fun listenable music! If you can listen to the Village People without the urge to bust a move or two (whether in private or public) you just don't have rhythm. Classic hits like YMCA and In the Navy still get radio play from time to time, but this collection of live performances will make you wonder how this group could ever have faded away from the music scene. Forget the camp, forget the costumes! Just listen to some outstanding, upbeat tunes!
A Real Gem.......2001-07-04
My favorite songs are Hollywood and Ready for the 80's. I wasn't alive when these guys were big, but it doesn't mean their music is lost. Buy this CD used and enjoy the heck out of it when you've been drinking too much; it's fun.
Cool.......2000-10-20

Elaine Paige headlines the international cast of Masterpiece: The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, a September 2001 concert in Beijing. Paige sings songs from her roles in Lloyd Webber's musicals Evita, and Sunset Boulevard, while Kris Phillips, Sandy Lam, Tony Vincent, and others provide solid but rarely thrilling renditions of tunes from such shows as Jesus Christ Superstar and Phantom of the Opera. Indeed, other than the legitimacy provided by Paige, there's not a whole lot to distinguish Masterpiece from the many other Lloyd Webber tributes and compilations. The primary distinction may be the fact that the concert is also available on DVD, which more than doubles the CD's 54-minute running time. The CD is really not much more than a promotion for the DVD, a point proven by the inclusion of a bonus DVD that samples two performances (Phillips's "The Music of the Night" and Lam's "I Don't Know How to Love Him"). Better, then, to simply get the DVD, or the DVD and CD combo for a cheaper price than when they're purchased separately. --David HoriuchiCustomer Reviews:
Not very good at all.......2006-05-07
Missing one star for its completeness.......2006-04-09
The whole concert is almost 3 hours in length with over 30 songs from almost all the works by Andrew Lloyd Webber including the latest show by Webber back then which was "The Beautiful Game". Missing only Starlight Express and By Jeeves. Here comes the bad part, only 13 were chosen to be on the CD and Miss Sandy Lam's song isn't even on the recording!!! There are some other truly wonderful performance that were left off the recording. For example, Tony Vincent's "And the Money Kept Rolling", the ensemble's "Let Us Love in Peace" and Miss Paige's "The Heart Is Slow to Learn", just to name a few
Still, there are some really nice performance captured in the CD. Elaine's "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" and "As If We Never Said Goodbye" are quite good but I have heard better versions out there. Tony Vincent's "Jesus Christ Superstar" is really awesome. That shouldn't be a big surprise since he was Judas in the Broadway Revival of JCS. Another of my favourite is Helen Walsh with her take on "Take That Look off Your Face". That was quite a performance. The other outstanding one is Lisa Crosato with her rendition of "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again". Then there's a great treat when both of them sang a duet together in "Pie Jesu". It was so beautiful. Thank goodness they didn't leave this one out.
Besides from the audio part, there are also sample clips from the concert: Kris Philip's "The Music of the Night" and Sandy Lam's "I Don't Know How to Love Him". Amazon said that it comes in a form of a bonus DVD. Mine's more of an enhanced-CD, if you pop the CD into the computer, then the bonus clips will play. That's quite a nice treat. But wouldn't it be better to just buy the DVD?
So, to sum all of that up, I'd recommend you to go and get the DVD if you're interested in the concert. I didn't hate this recording or anything but just wish that it would be more complete.
disappointed.......2002-09-29

Album Description
The Indigenous People's new CD Captured Live In Brazil (Jazzateria #20301-2) is proof of his unique jazz vision. His Indigenous People group mines the rich history of African diasporic music, from African folk melodies, Brazilian and Caribbean grooves to American jazz, funk and go-go rhythms. Cary states: "Our intention on this CD was to capture the spirit of our people and perpetuate their energy through our music." At times recalling flashes of electric Herbie Hancock, Weather Report and 60's and 70's excursions by musical trend-setters like Donald Byrd and Cannonball Adderly, Captured Live In Brazil is an expansive exploration of groove by the young keyboardist and bandleader, who shines on acoustic piano, Fender Rhodes and Moog. From the pensive, wide-open opener "Rain Dance" to the percussion-heavy "Indigenous People Pt. II", Cary's new group is with him every step of the way, surrounding him as a living, breathing musical organism.Band Members: marc cary, tarus mateen bass, daniel moreno percussion, yarbrough charles laws flute & percussion, & johan rucker drums.
