While not their most definitive album (that honor belongs to 1992's Dirt), Jar of Flies represents an important step in Alice in Chains' recording career. Witness "I Stay Away," which is made up of equal portions of hummable guitar riffs and the spookier, scarier, more grinding elements that most fans associate with Alice in Chains. This song most clearly delineates the dichotomy that was a highlight of the band's sound--Jerry Cantrell's listenable tunes and often gorgeous arrangements (just listen to what he does with "Whale & Wasp"!) and Layne Staley's growling vocals, which are just the teeniest bit flat. The collection as a whole, brief as it is, has an elegance that's unusual for metal. --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars One of my Top Ten CDs.........2007-06-26

Got into AIC late but now its among my most-played stuff... Of course Nothing Safe & Unplugged are also great.

BTW, saw the "new" AIC @ the Elect Factory in Philly and while some may say its sacrilege I really enjoyed the show. Hey, they deserve to make a living & they seem to be trying to stay true to the originals... They also incorp a tribute to Layne.

5 out of 5 stars Alright..........2007-05-17

Like what has been said, this album is amazing. Alice in Chains is the only band that I can listen to non-stop and absolutely love. I can listen to the same song over and over, or once every month with the same reaction (if not better). Nutshell is one of the best songs I've ever listened to.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2007-05-15

Alice in Chains is definitely one of the best bands to have come out during the 90s. I can listen to their songs non-stop, over and over, without ever getting tired of their songs. Every song, in every CD is good or excellent. No, nothing bad at all about Alice in Chains.

5 out of 5 stars Jar of Flies.......2007-05-14

I had previously owned this recording, but it was on cassette and I had lost it. I really missed it and kept looking for it in stores on CD, but could not find it. I would highly recommend this album to anyone who even minimally likes Alice in Chains.

5 out of 5 stars Reviewgium Classic: 10/10.......2007-05-04

What can I say about this album? Only that I have been listening to it on a consistent basis since practically the time it was released, and I enjoy it as much now as I did then. My musical tastes have changed much since 1994, but one thing remains constant: my love for this album, and indeed pretty much anything and everything done by this band. The strange thing is, it contains what is probably my least favorite Alice In Chains song ("Swing On This"), and yet I still consider it my favorite album by the band, and I still feel confident in giving it a perfect rating.

Yes, I still remember back in the day seeing for the first time the video for "I Stay Away" (you know, back when MTV was kinda-sorta good...compared to now anyway), and being completely entranced by what I was seeing and hearing. I barely knew the band back then, but somehow I felt that I had known them forever. It was everything I wanted and needed to see and hear. And so I discovered Jar of Flies. From the haunting opening bass line and ghostly vocal harmonies of "Rotten Apple," and the heart-wrenching melodies of "Nutshell" and "Don't Follow," to the catchy rhythm of "No Excuses," and the mystifying wailing of Jerry's guitar in "Whale and Wasp," I knew from the very first listen that this was something special...something that would be a part of me forever. There is so much passion at play on this album from all members of the band, and I feel that with Jar of Flies, they were really truly pouring their hearts out in a way they had never done before. Indeed, I feel that "Nutshell" is the defining song of Layne Staley's life, and every time I hear it, I shed a tear for him. It was the first song I heard, the very moment that Layne's death was announced that grim morning years ago, and that will always be the first thing I think of whenever the song graces my ears. I consider this album to be perfect. Perfect in that everything syncs together in such a genuinely meaningful way; perfect in its blend of acoustic and electric; perfect in that it displays the constant progression Alice In Chains had by releasing albums that each had a completely authentic sound that was never repeated.

I have never successfully compiled a satisfactory list of what I would call my "top ten albums of all time," but I know for sure that Jar of Flies would be on that list, and quite high at that, despite the fact that it is not a full-length album. Obviously, this album means a lot to me in a personal way, but all that aside, I feel that this is an absolute must-have in any serious music lover's collection.

I am not a country music listener, but Stand Still did it for me.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Album!.......2004-08-03

"What Else is There" Billy Ray Cyrus asks in the first track of Time Flies, and while he is talking about love, I'm talking about pure country music.

Time Flies has only one problem, it's hard to pick a stand out track on an album that is great overall. From the beautiful opening track "What Else Is There" to the inspiring acoustic re-take of "Some Gave All" Cyrus delivers 15 tracks of pure country music with just a touch of Southern Rock.

5 out of 5 stars Billy Ray Gets Better and Better.......2003-09-23

If you are a Billy Ray Cyrus fan this is a must have every song on the album is great. I first heard alot of his songs from Time Flies in concert summer 2002. Also look for Billy's new album coming in October called The Other Side. i am a huge billy Fan since Some Gave All and have all of his albums which are great. Time Flies is just another example how great Billy is. Also you can catch billy's new videos on GAC.

    4 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2003-09-18

I was so happy to see that this CD had the theme for BRC's new show "Doc", called "Stand Still" on it. I've been watching the show since the beginning, and now I'm hooked. I watch it every Sunday night. This CD is so great! I also love the first track "What Else is There"

5 out of 5 stars TIME FLIES deserves to be heard! BRC outdid himself again!.......2003-07-10

Contrary to popular belief, Billy Ray Cyrus never "left" radio for television. Radio turned it's back on BRC long ago and all he has done is continue to turn out great record after great record, electrify audiences across the country with his energetic stage show, and spend a good amount of time acting.

If it wasn't for the acting, however, I'm not sure this album would've ever made it out. I'm sure happy it did though. Time Flies may be the best country album this year. Some favorites of mine are "Stand Still" (Theme of DOC), "I Still Believe", and the touching new single "Back To Memphis." It's a song that reminds us that although ABC and NBC aren't still sending all of their anchors to Iraq, the war is still going on and people are still dying. An added bonus is the acoustic version of what may be Billy's best penned song ever, "Some Gave All." Also included is a rocking September 11th tribute "Close to Gone."

Most albums that an artist puts out have only three or four songs that the buyer will enjoy and the rest are skipped. Not this album...All 15 tracks are great songs. I would recommend this album to a fan of music, regardless of genre because BRC is so diverse, he covers the entire spectrum on this album. Billy Ray Cyrus deserves to be heard and respected. Because everyone has their own opinions on music, there is no such thing as a guarantee. But, I GUARANTEE that Time Flies is the closest thing to being guaranteed a great listening experience as you can get. This CD should solidify all of his current fans and grab a few more new ones as well.

4 out of 5 stars "Memories Of A Rock N' Rolla" get better with this one!.......2007-06-23

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

Traffic's 1974 "When The Eagle Flies" creates different and interesting points of view depending on which type of fan is pontificating.

The record buyer that enjoyed the plethora of incredible radio tunes not only doesn't have this in their collection but may not have even experienced the forty minutes of material.

The collector that has been fascinated with all directions the band has taken them is actually fond of the material.

Then there is the third and final segment. Those that may have gotten the LP as a gift or picked up a CD copy and played it one time but couldn't get past the non-commercial song structure. However, something in the back of their musical brain made them wipe off the dust and give it another listening. They were able to lock in on the seven tracks.

There were critics who misconstrued non-radio friendly for lack of effort or desire. That is unfair to somebody of Steve Winwood's caliber. He has proven repeatedly that if you give his material an honest ear the esoteric as well as the commercial songs have substance, desire, and skill.

The opening track is correctly titled "Something New." It is catchy without being poppy and the piano and voice accompany each other well.

"Dream Gerrard" is a long composition that puts in some jazz flavor. At over eleven minutes it is by far the longest track on the album. Don't be turned off. The music is always tasty and never too out of reach.

"Graveyard People" is at times dark and soft, but there is something hypnotic about it.

"Walking In The Wind" has noticeable bass-lines featured in the mix. Rosco Gee known for his work with the avant-garde, progressive, and improvisational band called "Can" leaves his mark throughout.

"Memories Of A Rock N' Rolla" seems deeply personal, solidified by lyrics about the past. We've gotten older but constantly wonder back to yesteryear.

"Love" Once again the jazz flavor is sprinkled throughout the song. It provides nice background music.

We finish with the title track. A bit sounds like "Freedom Rider" It's a nice end to one of the more underrated releases from the era.

Enjoy the music and be well,
    Craig Fenton
Author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent"

4 out of 5 stars A nice album but not the place to start.......2007-03-28

Back when this album first came out it was written off by just about everyone. This was the first Traffic album that was almost hard to find in record stores even when it was new. Thankfully, time and a loyal fanbase have been kind to it. As far as the album itself, it is very good although I wouldn't suggest anyone new to the band start here. The songs are good and the album provides a nice laid back listen.

4 out of 5 stars Truly an organic Traffic album....intense and wonderful.......2006-11-22

When the Eagle Flies was Traffic's final album, released in late 1973/early 1974. Back to a four piece band (Roscoe Gee takes on bass duties, augmenting the Traffic core of Winwood, Capaldi, and Wood), the sound is markedly different. In the liner notes, Steve Winwood says how this is an "organic" Traffic album, completely homemade, and it shows. I had never heard this album, only heard about it, for years. As a huge Traffic fan once it was available on CD, I knew I had to check it out. And while it isn't their best album, it's still a hidden gem in their catalog.

It opens up joyously with Something New, and the roughhewn, homemade sound (of the entire album) matches up almost perfectly with the rustic woodcut look of the album cover. It's followed by two brooding and intense numbers, Dream Gerrard (with a hypnotic riff motif throughout) and the funky jazzy Graveyard People. Walking on the Wind is another joyful-sounding song, while Memories of a Rock n Rolla veers between tounge-in-cheek humor and plaintive pleading from Winwood before ending with another joyful outro. The final two songs, Love (a short little piece recorded live) and the title track (a really moody, almost downbeat song that is the roughest sounding of the bunch) round out the album.

All in all a fitting, quiet, yet no less intense or masterful farewell from one of the most original and excellent band from that era. While this certainly would not be the Traffic album to start with if you're just getting into them, once you're immersed in their excellent music, this is well worth seeking out.

4 out of 5 stars A brooding mixture of jazz/rock/psych/pop with some mellotron and synths .......2006-05-21

This 1974 recording would be the last studio Traffic album released in the 1970s and returns (to my ears at any rate) to the formula established on The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys (1971). One of the biggest differences between the two albums (and every other Traffic album for that matter), is that keyboard instruments including the mellotron and mini-moog synthesizer are used on When the Eagle Flies. As a massive fan of both progressive rock and analog synthesizers, I regard the new additions as a major bonus.

The musicians on this album include Steve Winwood (vocals, electric piano, acoustic piano, Hammond organ, mellotron, mini-moog synthesizer): Chris Wood (saxophone and flute); Jim Capaldi (drums/percussion); Reebop Kwaku Baah (percussion); and Rosko Gee (electric bass). This reflects yet another lineup shift that, with the exception of Rosko, saw Traffic fully using the core members once again - I am a big Capaldi fan so this was very exciting. The previous two albums had augmented the core group with studio musicians.

The seven tracks range in length from 3'15" to 11'01" and include five brooding and gloomy tracks (Dream Gerrard; Graveyard People; Walking in the Wind; Love; and When the Eagle Flies); and two somewhat more upbeat tracks that occasionally groove in a vaguely funky (yet very English) way. All of the tracks feature tight musicianship and stylistically the music on this album is in keeping with Traffic's distinct synthesis of jazz-rock, psychedelic, and pop. Of the seven tracks, the lengthy 11'01" Dream Gerrard (with it's tons of mellotron) is a personal favorite, although the sad closing track When the Eagle Flies is right up there too.

The remastered CD features the restored artwork, excellent sound quality, and informative liner notes.

All in all this is a great Traffic album that is recommended along with The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys (1971), Shoot Out at the Fantasy Factory (1973), and the live album On the Road (1973).

    5 out of 5 stars Overlooked gem.......2006-03-23

This album has often been overlooked by fans who opt for the more well-known gifts such as Low Spark, Mr. Fantasy, Shootout, etc., but it should not be missed. Later in the careers of the dynamically changing ensemble, this album has some of Traffic's sweetest gems. Feelings roll through the mind as a bunch of superb musicians take you to places and scenes often long forgotten. The title track reminds me of how optimistic we could be about our world with dreams of revival and cleansing. "Memories of a Rock N Rolla" takes me back to a time I dreamed of being that star; dancing around my basement singing "And the music is so sweet, that it makes me tap my feet". Ah, it's like sitting in a cool breeze on top of a green rolling hill and just feeling high. I highly recommend this work for anyone with a mind that enjoys expansion. Enjoy and dream on.

    3 out of 5 stars Surprisingly dull.......2004-10-07

I find this a pleasant group effort, but to my ears the music wanders, lacking the focused solid groove featured on many Coleman Hawkins recordings. Very egalitarian of him to let all the band members solo, but Hawk is silent while that goes on. Idries Sulieman blowing a single trumpet note for a full minute is not my idea of great music. For some more exciting Hawk, put your money into "Retrospective: 1929-1963" for a good overview of His early work, "Encounters Ben Webster" for a compellingly romantic session, and "Night Hawk" for an exciting session with another protege, Eddie Lockjaw Davis.

5 out of 5 stars Coleman Hawkins The most under appreciated tenor player ever.......2003-05-04

If this recording were a painting, it would be hanginÕ in the Met.

What can you say about Coleman Hawkins? Now here is a guy who not only produced great standards covered by such heavyweights like, John Coltrane, Stan Getz, Art Pepper, Frank Sinatra, Benny Goodman, and Thelonious Monk, but continued to produce great work for decades.

This snippet on Coleman Hawkins from Harlem.org: "...Coleman Hawkins popularized the tenor saxophone and gathered a legion of followers who copied his style. In 1924 he joined Fletcher Henderson's band and began a tenure which lasted over a decade. In 1936 Hawkins recorded 'Body and Soul,' which is his most famous composition. At the time it was a huge hit and very innovative, because most of it was improvised. He participated in early bop dates after he hired Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk and Max Roach. Coleman Hawkins is a true legend of 20th century music.Ó

Now how is that for a rŽsumŽ?

With that out of the way, here is the review: ColemanÕs tenor sax has a rich, round sound that plays ÒswingÓ one moment, and then flips to Òbe-bopÓ to perk it up. He is a dexterous as ever and delivers a very relaxing sound. The liner notes state that Hawkins got to pick his own musicians and what musicians he picked.

On the song ÒJuicy FruitÓ and ÒSancticityÓ, each musicians delivers inspired improv lines with no attention paid to the clock. The Hawk just lets each band member tear into it any way they want and there is a lot of innovation here to appreciate and even study.

The song "Blue Lights" features a nice guitar solo by Barry Galbraith with very stylish arranging overall.

The song "Think Deep" sounds like a sequel to "Harlem Nocturne" and it's quite fun.

Though the album is just 39 minutes long, it is still worth the price of admission.

Recorded live in a New York City studio circa 1957 and digitally remastered in 1987, this jewel of a CD is nothing but inspired performances and bliss.

5 out of 5 stars Hail to the Mentor!!.......2001-07-03

I can't believe that this album has been reviewed only once. Then again, I often gravitate to the unheralded works when buying the music of jazz's grand masters. The Hawk Flies High is my favorite of the Coleman Hawkins recordings I've heard so far. One great thing about him, aside from that full, robust and muscular tone, is that Hawkins always kept abreast of "new" styles. He was also secure enough to nurture, and even learn from younger players, many of whom were achieving stardom in their own right. For this reason, I really look forward to hearing the CD which documents Hawkins and Sonny Rollins on record together in 1963.

For The Hawk Flies High, Hawkins's hand-picked lineup is stellar, beginning with the rhythm section. Pianist Hank Jones is brilliant on "Chant". Bassist Oscar Pettiford is most notable on the soulful, "Juicy Fruit". Papa Joe Jones is subtle and strong throughout. I am not very familiar with guitarist Barry Galbraith, but he gives the rhythm real poignancy on "Laura". If the rhythm provides the album's drive, the horn players provide the excitement. Trumpeter Idress Sulieman tears it up on "Juicy Fruit". His solo features a moment where he holds one thrilling note for ALMOST TWO MINUTES. The most creative tension on the CD comes from the interplay between Hawkins, and J.J. Johnson, my all-time favorite trombonist. Check out J.J. providing a cushion for the leader, as Hawkins goes all-out in a suspenseful solo in "Sancticity." Hawkins really rose to the occasion on this album, and plays ferociously on "Chant" and "Juicy Fruit". On the ballads, "Think Deep" and "Laura", he is both tender and warm. J.J. Johnson offers memorable solos on "Chant," "Juicy Fruit", "Laura" and "Sancticity"(which is also called The Walker, a tune which Hawk has performed live with Roy Eldridge).

I highly recommend this powerful, monstrously beautiful album, which finds Coleman Hawkins and his cohorts in great form. Sorry for being long-winded, but I really love this album. Unfortunately, it is much too short. I know I've enjoyed a CD when I wish that I'd been in the room with an artist while he or she performed it; or feel like I know the artist in a way I couldn't have without hearing it.

5 out of 5 stars Hawk Was Still Flying High After All Those Years.......2001-04-22

Coleman Hawkins virtually invented the jazz tenor saxophone. It was an equally amazing feat that thirty years after he rose to stardom in Fletcher Henderson's big band, he could still make an album as consistently modern and enjoyable as "The Hawk Flies High." This Riverside date from March 1957 really helped to give Hawk back his wings. He was allowed to hand pick the band for this date, and what a group he assembled -- trombonist J.J. Johnson, underrated trumpeter Idrees Sulieman, pianist Hank Jones, guitarist Barry Galbraith, bassist Oscar Pettiford and drummer Jo Jones. They swing their way through six great tunes, including the lengthy "Juicy Fruit," Gigi Gryce's "Blue Lights" and the Hawkins original "Sancticity." The success of this album jump started a second career for Hawk -- he went to cut two memorable dates for Norman Granz, "The Genius of Coleman Hawkins" and "Coleman Hawkins Encounters Ben Webster," and a string of albums for the Prestige label and its Moodsville series. While those dates were memorable, the Hawk would never soar as high as he did on "The Hawk Flies High."

3 out of 5 stars Decent Album For The Money.......2007-05-13

Pretty good except for the fact they left off "Walking on a thin line". Record companys do this on purpose so fans dont just buy the greatest hits and ignore the rest of the catalog.

excellent cd of all the hits by huey lewis and the news. really enjoyed it and would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest hits are great........2006-07-12

I love every song on this cd. I never really knew anything about this band but one day I saw this and said "why not?" I like all the songs on here some I knew and some I had never heard but they are all great. I allways listen to this cd now because it's great music. Not just a few songs but the whole cd.

    5 out of 5 stars Such a good Album.......2006-05-23

We'll do a track by track review here...

    1. Heart of Rock and Roll- Everyone knows this track, and it's a big one. This song has been called bad by some, even some called it a "history lesson" for naming all these names in cities, but it's a great opener.
    2. Heart and Soul- The guitar line for this song drives it. It's an amazing tune, and the chorus is catchy as hell. Another great one.
    3. Doing it All for My Baby- Huey shines as a writer here. It's a very good love song, and a nice solo is thrown in here as well. A very recognizeable track.
    4. Do You Believe in Love- Another awesmome guitar line here. A slower paced song, and was redone to sound slower and more jazz type. I like the new version better.
    5. Trouble in Paradise- I haven't really listened to this song much, so I cant give a good estimate on it.
    6. The Power of Love- The pretty much definitive Huey song. From the Back to the Future soundtrack. Another great guitar part here, and the song starts from the get go, and doesnt ever let up.
    7. If This is It- These guitar lines are becoming something of a pattern here. An awesome intro, and a great song. You can tell what he was going through when he wrote it. An awesome song.
    8. Bad is Bad- A good song. A slow, underground type feel. Huey is going back to his home, and sees a strange pai of shoes under the bed. Nice.
    9. Working For a Livin'- A fast paced song about Huey's working days. Short, clocks in a little over 2 minutes.
    10. It's Alright- When the News do a cappella, they shine. This is a great song, an d all parts blend together so well, and they compliment each other.
    11. Stuck With You- Kind of an ironic title. It's about two people who fight and have problems, but know they should be together no matter what they do.
    12. I want a New Drug- Awesome guitar part. Awesome song. Cool video. All around good in this.

5 out of 5 stars Missing A Couple of Hits But Still Great.......2006-03-01

I've been a fan of Huey Lewis for a long time. Like a lot of people, I discovered the band from the Back to the Future films. If you don't own all of the albums yet, this is the best place to start. It has all the hits you need from the band, well almost. With great songs like "Stuck with You" and "Power of Love", you can't help but wonder why they didn't include other hits like "Back in Time" or "Hip To Be Square". But for this price, it is a bargain, it's worth a lot more. This band is one of the greatest of all time and you do yourself a favor if you get this record! It's great.

A five-disc set of all the singles from Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, plus their B-sides, outtakes and a bunch of covers, The Aeroplane Flies High is the Pumpkins' rock OD. Bloated? Of course it's bloated. Bloat is the idea. But, for those who are fascinated with Billy Corgan's mind already, it's a curious glance at the man behind the curtain: There are some perfectly good rockers that were excluded from Mellon Collie only because there were already functionally equivalent songs on it; there's the insane 23-minute "Pastichio Medley" of half-grown riffs and works-in-progress, and, in covers of Cars, The Cure, and Missing Persons songs, there are hints of the new wave ideas at the Pumpkins' heart. --Douglas Wolk

    5 out of 5 stars A 'Smashing' Box Set.......2006-05-08

Contrary to another review on this page, if you are a fan of The Smashing Pumpkins, you are going to love this set. Although I am quite a big Pumpkins fan, I think even non-hardcore fans will like it. Wheather you like the sorrowful splendor of Adore, the more up-beat feeling of Siamese Dream, or just the pure beauty of Mellon Collie, you're going to love this set because it has it all. There's even a bit of almost heavy metal-ness in the song 'Pastichio Medley' which is just 25 minutes of guitar riffs piled into one track. I know how bad that sounds now, but think of it like this: the riffs are like those catchy openings of songs like 'Today', 'Thirty-Three', and 'Here Is No Why', and they sound surprisingly good end-to-end.

The tracks on this set still have that famous Smashing Pumpkins feel to them; I don't find them any less enjoyable than the songs on Mellon Collie or Adore. In fact, a lot of my favorite songs are on here. There's such a great variety: there are beautiful covers songs of The Carrs and The Cure, songs featuring mainly D'arcy and James on vocals, angry songs, sad songs, happy songs....oh, I could go on and on. I have to point out that D'arcy's voice is absolutely amazing on 'Dreaming', as is James's on 'The Boy'. Listen to the samples; I think you'll like what you hear.

And then there's the cost factor. I actually bought mine here on Amazon for $40. It was not new, but was still in mint condition. Listen to the song samples, and if you like them and you can find it for a reasonable price, just go for it. Believe me, you will not regret it. This is truely a beautiful piece of art that I am very passionate about, and I hope you fall in love with it as much as I have.

Smashing Pumpkins......enough said!! NOW BUY EVERYTHING SMASHING PUMPKINS!!! you will NOT regret it!

    5 out of 5 stars Aerophoria!.......2006-02-26

Okay, first off, yes this is for hardcore Pumpkin fans. But then again, if you're NOT a dihard Pumpkin fan, what are you doing here?

You've heard it all before, blah blah, this is just really a compilation of B-Sides. B-sides not meaning poorly-written songs, just very quickly recorded.

So, that leaves them with a very raw, unfinished and unpolished sound. I personally love the feel you get out of it. I can imagine some people absolutely hating it.

Many people consider The Aeroplane Flies High five singles from Mellon Collie. This is sort of true... Really, averaging around six tracks per CD they're more like EP's than singles. Also, for instance, with Tonight Tonight there were two versions of the single, each with different tracks. The Aeroplane Flies High combines all the tracks together.

One person's review, I believe, complains saying that there are too many CD's and they could have easily fit them all on two cd's instead of five. Now, that's totally true, but there's something MAJOR that makes this box-set really all worth it. Each EP is true to their A-Side. For instance, with Zero all the B-sides are all hard-rock tracks, like "God" and "Mouths of Babes", with 33 you get more quiet subdued tracks like "The Last Song" and "The Bells". This means each EP sounds very well done, rather than just a jumble of tracks everywhere.

It's important to know that if you're ever going to consider buying this you REALLY need to like Billy's voice. Since these weren't given much time Billy didn't bother re-recording parts where he sounds exceptionally awefull. Of course, for me, since for whatever reason I love Billy's horrible whiney voice, it's a treat.

The biggest problem you'll have is not really deciding on whether you'll get it, or even getting the money for it, it's reall all dependant on HOW you'll get it. I reccomend either here, eBay, or Half.com. You'll HAVE to buy it used, so be careful you get all the CD's and everything's in good condition. If you're lucky, you can land a price around $40, if you're unlucky, expect around $70. So, plan around those two numbers.

    5 out of 5 stars Mellon Collie's Sister Album--Possibly Better Than It's Predecessor?.......2005-12-29

I would like to start off this review by saying this; unfortunately, I do not own an actual, manufactured copy of The Aeroplane Flies High. Seeing as the box set is no longer commercially available (it went out of print in 1996, the year that it was released), and the price for used/new copies is very high indeed, I just don't have the money.
Although this box set is worth $169.00, I'm just too cheap to buy it. How did I get the music contained in this set? The library.
The Aeroplane Flies High was compiled from the leftovers of the Pumpkins magnificent double album, This box set is a perfect example of the intertwinement of Corgan's and Iha's musical brilliance. These "b-sides" are all great songs, but once you listen to them, you begin to see why they never made the final cut of the double-album. They just don't fit with the rest of the tracks.
Here is what you should do if you're low on money, like myself: 1)reserve a copy of this at your local library; 2) Once it arrives, take it home and put the music onto your computer; 3) Pop each EP into your stereo and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Why were all of the b-sides excluded from Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness?.......2005-12-27

Gosh, I think all of these songs are better than the ones on Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. With all those b-sides, you really CAN make a new masterpiece. Here are the b-sides I use every time to make a "new disc." Some of are from Greatest Hits, mainly here, and even one is on "EARphoria."

    12. Set the Ray to Jerry
    13. Lucky 13

Tracks 1-2 from Greatest Hits, 3-8 from here, 9 from Earphoria, 10 from here, 11 from Greatest Hits, 12 from here, 13-15 from Greatest Hits (Special Edition). Do not use Turns Left, Looks Right, use the one from Greatest Hits (Special Edition)!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Nanna /Christmas.......2007-01-10

I have always enjoyed the voice of Nanna Mouskouri for many years. She has a voice of a nightingale. This cd is full of beautiful international Christmas music. If you enjoy music in multi languages then you totally agree with my rating of this cd...

5 out of 5 stars A Christmas Trip Around The World.......2004-12-01

When it comes to singing in many languages, Nana Mouskouri is among the best. This album covers beautiful carols in French, English, Greek, German, Italian, and Latin. Her clear voice and perfect diction give a wonderful glimpse into the traditional Christmas songs of many lands. I especially enjoyed hearing "Kalin Iméran" - it's not easy to find Greek carols and this one is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars A truly international album from a classy singer.......2003-11-16

Nana is a huge star in mainland Europe with a string of hit singles in several countries. She only had one big hit in Britain but her albums have always enjoyed healthy UK sales. I don't know the extent of her following in America but this Christmas album was finally given an American release in 2003 to coincide with a tour. Nana sings in several different languages and you can hear some of them on this collection, including English, French, German and Greek.

The only songs here that Nana sings in English are Deck the halls, O come all ye faithful, Hark the herald angels sing, White Christmas, God rest ye merry gentlemen, All through the night and Lullaby.

Five songs are taken from an album of German Christmas songs, including Stille nacht heilage nacht (Silent night), and O tannenbaum (O Christmas tree).

Nana sings Minuet Chretien (O holy night) and L'enfant au tambour (Little drummer boy) both in French. Ave Maria is here as well but I haven't worked out in which language. I recognize some other songs here from the tune, but there are plenty of high quality songs that I don't recognize at all (or only recognize from other foreign language recordings).

I have the French edition of this album, which has the title Les plus beaux Noels du monde, but the track listing and front cover artwork is the same as the American edition.

Frankly, it doesn't matter what language Nana sings in - if you enjoy any of her music, you'll love this album.

4 out of 5 stars this is the Philip Glassish version.......2006-09-13

One must realize members of the Philip Glass Emsemble are performimg here. True it has somewhat a disco feel at times. It is colorfull and upbeat. It has repetative framework that I think works well here. Because it follows closely to the original piece the Glass minimalism is incorporated within the music instead of controling it. I wished it had a bit darker and brooding soundscape and had say Fripplike guitar for example.( King Crimson- The Construction Of Light - to me that track sounds like Fripp meets Glass )Anyways, I managed to find this a few years ago on import after extensive searching. Now I see it is much more easily available. This was one of those albums I had that I was not happy till I found a cd version. Personally I love this.

    5 out of 5 stars A Surprising Find.......2006-07-02

I came across this album while browsing absent-mindedly through the public library selection. I had not recognized the name "Carmina Burana", but upon listening, realized that I had heard the piece many times, from many conductors, before. I am a lover of the medieval period, church music, and 80's synthesized music, amongst many other genres. I was astounded to find such a synchronically composed piece that brought together such diverse theories.

    3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2005-12-09

Very Very Very 80s sounding. While that normally isn't a bad thing for me, it just makes this album very boring and cheesey. I'm a Manzarek fan, but he still plays at his best in the Doors.

    5 out of 5 stars I can't let Maggie go.......2003-04-07

The exquisite I can't let Maggie go, a top ten UK hit in 1968, is all that anybody ever remembers Honeybus for. They were true one-hit wonders, as nothing else so much as grazed the charts. What surprised me was that somebody found enough material to fill two CD's.

The first CD contains the A and B-sides of seven singles plus all the tracks from their only album, Story. The second CD is made up of previously unreleased demos, some BBC sessions and tracks recorded for a 1973 reunion album that was aborted before it was complete, plus both sides of an Italian single.

Their first two singles were unsuccessful. Following the success of the third single, I can't let Maggie go, the group was required by its record company to do some touring. Lead singer and songwriter didn't want to do this and quit the group. Had he stayed, it is likely that Honeybus would have had further hits. Ray Cane and Colin Hare took over songwriting duties, each contributing interesting songs - they did not write together. Jim Kelly joined the group to become lead singer.

The cover versions that characterise so many albums of the sixties are conspicuously absent from their studio recordings, but the BBC sessions include a cover of Like an old time movie, a minor hit for Scott Mackenzie, whose big hit was San Francisco (Be sure to wear flowers in your hair).

This is an interesting anthology of a group that should have achieved more than they did, but pop and rock history is full of what might have been. If you only want I can't let Maggie go, it is available on any number of UK various artists sixties compilations, but if, like me, you are curious, you will find this to be an interesting collection, especially the first CD.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this one! You can't do wrong.......2002-10-18

After hearing Ian Matthew's cover of "Do i still figure in your life" from his Some Days You Eat the Bear Lp, I had to find the guy who wrote this great song. It happend to be Pete Dello,
leader of the most underrated British 60's group Honeybus.
If you love artist like the Left Banke, Emmit Rhodes or the Beatles buy this one.
You get all their singles, BBC Session recording, an complete album and many more. Almost every song is great, especially I can't let Maggie go. So buy this one, and have a good time like I.
