YMO Re-united for the Earth Aid in Japan!.......2007-06-24

To mark its 25th anniversary since the emergence of YMO, this new best album was released with two discs. Although there have already been a number of 'YMO Bests' and 'YMO Remixes', one of the main differences between 'UC YMO' and previously published best albums is that Ryuichi SAKAMOTO (The Last Emperor; Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence) himself is supervising the album and in charge of the selection of the tracks. Although it is all in Japanese, Sakamoto also gives intriguing commentary on each piece. The re-mastered and improved sound quality is another element that makes this best album worth having, and this also includes very rare material (TV commercial version, 7-inch single version etc.) which has never been published before. This is a Japanese import, and therefore slightly costly, but (1) Sakamoto's supervision, (2) his commentary on every track, (3) the much improved sound quality and (4) the rare material would, I believe, be reasons enough for any YMO fan to consider getting hold of this 'Ultimate Collection'!!

FYI: YMO was re-united for one night only for the Earth Aid event from Japan (07/07/07). They were the last group to appear on stage in Japan and played the legendary 'Rydeen' with a new interpretation, which you can see on YouTube.

On the low end of mediocre.......2004-05-16

The 20th Century Masters entry into the Irish Rovers' Greatest Hits menagerie is on the low end of both; weak by Irish Rovers' standards and one of the lesser efforts in Universal Music's Millennium Collection.

The mastering is fair, with no glaring problems, but the sound is a bit muddy and the bass track rather weak.

The up-side of this collection is that several songs can be hard to find, especially the Tom Paxton cult-classic "Wasn't That a Party?". The down side is that many are re-recordings. This isn't terribly noticeable on gentle tunes like "The Unicorn" but is both disappointing and annoying on the aforementioned lively drinking song "Wasn't That a Party?".

If all the buyer wants is to add an Irish Rovers collection to his or her musical library, this CD will do. If, however, one desires a bit more quality in sound and more adherence to the original music, pass this one by and look elsewhere.

A vanguard musician!.......2006-10-06

Think in just only five fundamental icons of the early eighties. The name of Vanelli will arise with absolute naturalness, because of the simple fact he renowned, redefined and depicted creatively a way of feeling and playing music. With spectacular arrangements, inspired lyrics and interpretative freshness the musical stages.

Despite of the fact there would be other names in that reduced list, I am sure Vanelli would be in the ninety five per cent of those celebrities.

Vanelli is now part of the legend.

The Dutch Do It Again.......2004-08-24

By far this has to be the best compilation of Gino Vanelli's work to date. Two CD's filled with the hits and some nice tracks that should have been hits and a bonus third CD with a cool danceable version of "Black Cars" included . Why is it that the Japanese and the Dutch can release the best compilations while the US puts out crap usually filler songs and rarely the original version of the song. I for one do not like remakes of a song once I hear it unless it is a live performance.

Three great performances and more good stuff !.......2005-11-22

The CD reissue of this long forgotten rarity of an album recorded during Kiki's brief late 60s signing with Motown is certainly cause for celebration. Apart from Chris Clark, Kiki was probably the only white female singer to have found herself on Motown's roster of artistes during the label's halcyon years. The result of her entire Motown sessions - including leftovers in the can - are included in this compilation.

Technically, Kiki had arguably a better voice than fellow Britgirls Cilla, Sandie and Lulu. She had a naturally strong and attractive raspy edge to her voice that should have been labeled "soulful" but wasn't, for it lacked "sympatico", an innate quality that's gifted, not learned. Dusty had heaps of it. Kiki wasn't so lucky, as a result of which success eluded her when the others were making it big in the 60s.

Kiki's Motown sessions sound as fresh today as it did in 1970. The original album contained at least three masterful and sublime performances that make this a lost classic, namely "Love Makes The World Go Round", "Johnny Raven" and "Jimmy". The album is worth owning for these three recordings alone. The first of these should have been an instant hit but sadly wasn't. The second easily tops the Supremes' 70s cover on their "Touch" album. The last of these is simply immaculate and from the sleevenotes, it looks like Kiki feels the same way. There're other good stuff like "Day Will Come Between Sunday and Monday", "Love Is A Warm Kind Of Sorrow", "Oh Be My Love", and a slowed down version of Stevie Wonder's "For Once In My Life". Others like "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing" and "I Can't Give Back The Love I Feel For You" are blander and don't compare, respectively with Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell's and Dusty Springfield's (from "Dusty Definitely") more familiar versions.

Besides, Motown made some poor choices too. Kiki was ill advised to cover the Dusty #1, "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me". This dismal attempt at an alternative chorus arrangement to the Dusty original only succeeds in being awkward and inept. Likewise, Kiki sleepwalks through a perfunctory rendition of Smokey and the Miracles' "I Second That Emotion" that makes you wonder why they even bothered. The four previously unreleased bonus tracks (Tracks 15-18) are uneven including two similarly uninspired performances ("Walk On By" and "Put A Little Love In Your Heart") which are more like try out sessions and finally abandoned for good reason. Good to have for completists but that's about it.

Kiki's Motown session is more than a quaint slice of late 60s recording history. A little uneven perhaps - but hey, since when did Motown artistes make great albums before the Marvin Gaye "What's Going On " era ? - but there's magic in at least three of these performances and more good stuff, so that's good enough reason to go out and buy yourself a copy. Le Orme's pinnacle.......2007-02-06

This double cd I have recently purchased gets very high accolades for the Italian progrock. Especially for Le Orme at their best. For those who read the other reviews of Le Orme's early album-works and want to sample them - then purchase this cd. Best value thus far. But it is in Italian.

a complete anthology of a remarkable prog rock band.......2006-03-17

What was about Le Orme that made them one of the most remarkable bands of the Italian progressive rock in the 70's? This anthology, very well compiled and fortunately with the then on vinyl original versions, offers a thorough view of where this band was through at least two decades. As with all the other collections, it will be inconvenient to have three-four titles from each old LP, but the product is worth the price. All their classics, including the very progressive "Sguardo verso il cielo" or ballads like "Gioco di bimba" til the sounds that led them into the 80's, are here to be enjoyed. To distinguish them from other Italian bands, think of a Venetian version of ELP and Traffic fused together but with a lot of very original thoughts translated into music. If you can catch the lyrics it's a plus, but the music stands well by itself. Highly recommended if you don't plan to buy their extensive production.
