5 out of 5 stars Who dares, Win........2007-01-10

This is another daring Fusion Jazz Rock musical work for Carlos Santana.
Anybody who bought this album some 30 years ago hardly understood this musical work, since Santana's audiences were totally into different kind of music. For that reason Illuminations was the first Santana release not to go to Gold.
After the release of "love, Devotion and Surrender" and "Caravanserai", both in 1972, Santana continued exploring different routes from the Rock and Latin sounds he already was famous for.
On this album Santana is fully into Fusion, Jazz and Rock; with David Holland on bass, Tom Coster on Keyboards and Alice Coltrane on Harp, topped by a Classical 18 member band. The result is one of Santana's finest accomplishments.
This album is mainly for the lovers of Fusion Jazz Rock, Santana fans and any guitar great sound lover.
If you like this album, make sure to listen to "caravanserai" and "Love, Devotion and Surrender as well". 3 Santana albums that go hand in hand.

3 out of 5 stars Cinematic Orchestration.......2005-12-28

The names Coltrane & Santana sold this album to me as I found it accidentally one day searching through some experimental jazz albums! The album it self is a orchestral/jazz trip through warm washes of bass and drums through to the yearning call of the saxaphone blended with Carlos's typical solo routines backed with tabla beats. Any sample searchers out there should note that the orchestral arrangement in the first song was used by The Cinematic Orchestra for 'All That You Give' and has the same epic effect on you as the CO song does.
defintaly recommend this album if you are in to the Prog Rock sound and ambient jazz. Combined well to create a interesting album.

I bought this album when I was 16 yrs. old and did not like it and never played it until again till I was in my 30s now I understand it. Carlos guitar tone is increidable Alice really complaments his playing thank you Carlos&Alice for breathing fire in our souls

1 out of 5 stars Not what you think........2005-04-20

I was very disappointed by this album. It is almost reminiscient of noise. Terrible jazz/rock fusion, to the point of being nearly unlistenable. Be sure to listen before you buy.

5 out of 5 stars FREE!!!!!!!!!.......2004-07-06

This is the closest album thing to avante garde jazz that
Carlos Santana every did.Featuring brilliantly dramatic string accompanyment by harpist/arranger Alice Coltrane, her harp also
plays a big role. The music is typically otherwordly and if you close your eyes while listening you will believe you are being transported to another world!Wheather orchestral, rock or jazz
the stylistic blend of sound and YES-great sense of melody make
this a high point for both musicians.Alice Coltrane's entire
catalog,by the way,is also definately worth checking out if you like what you hear on this recording!

5 out of 5 stars A great reworking of a good album track........2001-02-12

Alice Deejay is a fabulous euro/techno/pop dance act from Holland. They are three girls with great dance moves! I have seen the act on British TV and it is awesome. Danski and Delmundo are the DJ's and Producers for both the Vengaboys and Alice Deejay. Danski's and Delmundo's work is truly incredible. They have taken a good song off "Who Needs Guitars Anyway" by Alice Deejay, completely reworked it and turned it into a GREAT song, especially with the XXL remix. I believe the cd single is in the Top Ten UK singles charts. I highly recommend this cd single. Buy the album too, it is superb.

    1 out of 5 stars A Bad Bootleg.......2002-10-31

This is a bootleg recording of a 1969 show in Toronto. This collection is available under many, many different names including, Science Fiction, Freak Out, Freak Out Song, Painting a Picture, etc., all of which are available from Amazon. The last two songs "Going to the River" and "Ain't That Just Like A Woman" ARE NOT Alice Cooper songs, nor are they performed by Alice Cooper. (You can confirm that with Alice's assistent, Brian "Renfield" Nelson.)

This is a very poor album. Save your money.

    1 out of 5 stars A slice of history.......2001-02-12

Made in UK in 1998, Serial# DRESS-603 Playing Time 25:30

Recorded way back in 1969 at the "Toronto Rock 'n' Roll Revival" concert (which also featured CHICAGO), this CD has been published under many names.

Much has been said in other reviews about this CD; I would just like to add 3 comments: 1) track 2 was recorded under the name "No Longer Umpire" on the "Pretties For You" album; 2) this CD is a picture disc; 3) treat this as a slice of history, and not for the casual Cooper fan.

    3 out of 5 stars Snorting anthrax.......2001-01-23

A very old album with low quality sound. Tracks one and six are by a different band who used the same recording area. The song Painting a picture is on Pretties for you under a different name. A version of this is essential for all Alice Cooper collectors. This is a recording made in 1969. It has loads of different names; Snorting anthrax, freak out, science fiction, nobody likes me, nobody likes alice cooper live, ladies man, toronto rock revival '69. All versions have eight tracks apart from Nobody likes Alice Cooper live, which has a medley as a ninth track.

    4 out of 5 stars Early Alice.......2000-09-06

Despite the fact that the sound quality is low and the last two tracks aren't even Alice Cooper, I like this album. Early Alice Cooper was very different from what they became, and while the material featured here is not upon first listening going to grab you, give it time. If you already know and love the entire "Pretties For You" album, the Alice material on this disc is essential. While the music on "Snorting Anthrax" isn't up to 'Fields Of Regret', it is certainly right up there. Very interesting cd.

"Hell Is" is a 16-track compilation featuring tracks from when AC was on the Epic label, and lifts tracks from the "Trash", "Hey Stoopid", "The Last Temptation" and "Classicks" albums.

All the tracks included here are full length, and possibly feature some of the strongest material from those albums... from the opening notes of "Poison", you know this "best of" will treat you to over an hour of great AC songs; in my opinion, those albums featured some of the best musicians to accompany AC in his career.

"Poison", "House Of Fire", "Hell Is Living Without You", "Bed Of Nails" and "Only My Heart Talkin'" open up the CD, all taken from "Trash"; "Hey Stoopid", "Love's A Loaded Gun", "Feed My Frankenstein" and "Hurricane Years" (all from the "Hey Stoopid" album) follow in the line-up. Then, from "The Last Temptation", we're treated to "Lost In America", "Stolen Prayer", "It's Me" and "Cleansed By Fire".

The 4-page booklet (no liner notes or pictures) states "Fire" (the Jimi Hendrix song) as previously unreleased, but true fans know it's available on "Classicks". The CD ends with 2 live tracks from AC's stable, "Go To Hell" which was the b-side of the "Bed Of Nails" single, and "School's Out", also recorded in concert, was released on the "Classicks" CD.

If you're unfamiliar with AC's career from 1989 to 1995 (the "Epic" years), this is a great CD to grab to add to your collection; if you have a solid AC library, this CD presents nothing new... but it's still over an hour of great stuff!

    5 out of 5 stars Alice Cooper.......2007-05-31

Alice Cooper's Brutal Planet is cutting edge Cooper. My son and I both bought a copy and we listen to it ALOT!! It is probably my favorite Cooper, I like it better than Dirty Diamonds, which was newer, but not so much the Cooper style that I enjoy so much. For the all-time Cooper fan, no collection is complete without Brutal Planet.

4 out of 5 stars Raw, right between the eyes.......2007-03-10

What on earth did this come from. Like some sort of cheese off dinosaur of heavy rock, AC comes out of the 90's and into the new century like some sort of Jurassic Park denizen eating the little bands for breakfast.

While some may decry the nu-metal tinge to this album I can only applaud the desire to stay current, to take the desired pieces of modern metal and weld them to the AC shock rock template. This Bob Marlotte produced album uses lots of shiny technology to take pummeling riffery circa '00 and allowing it full partnership with Alices' vocals in the mix. And the vox here match the music, taut and delivered with real punch. Just take a listen to the title track or it's follow up - Wicked Young Man. It will give you a very good idea of what this album is about. And the lyrics are as cold as the battle hardened music, Alice really showing the young pups like Jonathon Davis how your supposed to write shock rock lyrics.

A few tunes don't quite achieve total success - Eat Some More and Pick Up the Bones may not float your boat, but such is the single mided drive of the album as a whole you can forgive the odd bit of clunkiness.

This album is Alice rejuvenated, like a guy kickstarted by a lightning bolt and he's evidently decided (as of 2000) that he has no interest in becoming a heritage act just yet and wants to continue expanding his catalogue in a meaningful way as a working rock act.

    Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Alice album.......2001-04-23

The sequel to The Last Temptaiton took a long time getting here. It's sci-fi theme is reflected very much in it's metalish sound. But make no mistake, it's the same music Alice has always done, just heavier. The album starts off bleak and depressing, rather typical of Alice's earlier works, but rather than the nightmares of fantasy he used to delve into, this new nightmare is all the more real. Songs about nazism and killing your school pals are just as dark as songs from Welcome To My Nightmare about deflowering the children and having sex with dead bodies. The difference being on those albums, the songs weren't nasty until you really thought about them. Here however, I can't help but feel a little uncomfortable singing along to a song about reading 'meine kampf daily just to keep my hatred fead'. Thing is, where most bands moan about the state of the world, Alice doesn't. He doesn't try to change your mind about things, or provoke a reaction, he just tells it like it is, which is what makes it so disturbing. He accepts it, never for a minute moaning about the dead children in Pick Up The Bones. It shows almost a complaicancy for death and the apocalyse, why oh why do we enjoy this stuff so much? lol. Perhaps the fact that the riffs here are more solid than anything he's done of late, and the concept of the album shines through brilliantly keeping the whole album sounding pretty much the same throughout. The only bad part I'd say is Cold Machines where Alice does foray into nu-metal territory a little and there is not one guitar solo. I think thats the only album you could describe as filler though. Other than that, every song is great, not lettin down for a second. It's just a...cool album, classic Alice has finally returned ! Top cuts - Brutal Planet, Wicked Young Man, Pick Up The Bones, Blow Me A Kiss, Take It Like A Woman, Pessi-mystic

4 out of 5 stars Alice's best CD for ages!.......2000-06-25

I ordered this CD purely due to withdrawal symptoms - I had not heard a decent Alice Cooper for nearly a decade (i.e. Hey Stoopid, or maybe Trash. Classicks doesn't count). Acutally, I first heard it on Alice's official website - they have the whole title track to download in mp3 format. I was just blown away the first time I heard it! So quickly, I bought the CD, hoping that the other tracks were just as good. I put it in my stereo, and put it on, starting with track 2 as I had allready heard the first one. I could tell from the very first guitar notes that this song was going to be a good one. However, nothing could prepare me for what was to come - a thoughtful, violent song about nazis (or nazi followers, anyway), with a strong rhythm and excellent chord changes.

It seems that Cooper is tending towards more british-sounding songs. Anyone who has heard some of his latest songs (e.g. the one that was on the X-files soundtrack CD) will know what I mean. This is not a bad thing as it brings a more hard, gritty edge to the music, and makes it seem more fresh and new.

Cooper even throws in a couple of ballads, with "take it like a woman" being one of my favourite Alice Cooper songs YET. These sound great, and compliment the harder, more loud songs brilliantly.

I have introduced 2 people to Alice Cooper just by letting them listen to the title mp3 (before I bought the album) and both of them loved it. That's how good it is!

If this is the european import ( i'm not sure if it is or not) then it comes with a limited edition poster and screensaver. That is the reason I have not given it 5 stars - the screen saver is utterly pathetic, as it is just a slideshow of 3 different pictures. The poster is excellent, though.

All in all an essential purchase for Alice fans, and even for people who are interested in this type of music and want to start a decent CD collection.

    Well done Alice!

5 out of 5 stars Alice Cooper Brutal Planet.......2000-06-25

I loved this CD not only becasuse I am a big Alice Cooper fan, But because it is truly a work of art. Alice shows that it dosen't matter how old you are you can still rock! On this CD he dosen't have the typical Horror movie lyrics most people know him for. Instead he has made songs that talk about world hunger and everyday life. With some Alice Cooper twists of course. It has some of the same type of rock he used on the CD Hey Stoopid with a more 90's approach. A great CD that any Alice fan should own and any fan of good rock music.

4 out of 5 stars Nothing new here if you have Music Bank.......2006-09-18

This review is in regards to the [IMPORT] version which contains two remixes of Again - "Jungle" and "Tattoo of Pain".

If you're a serious Alice in Chains fan you'll obviously already have the domestic version of this album. The two remixes can be found in the Music Bank box set, although the Jungle remix is "hidden" on the fourth (data) cd in the x:/audio/ folder.

So to summarize - this is a fantastic album, with five superb tracks (Grind, Again, Heaven Beside You, God Am, and Over Now), and seven other solid cuts. No filler to be found here!
However, for the price of this import ($41.49 as of 09/18/2006), you can almost afford to buy the domestic version AND Music Bank ($10.99 and $34.99 respectively), which results in much more value for your dollar.

4 out of 5 stars nice for collectors.......2005-08-16

Anything that Alice in Chains releases is gold to me, but I think this is for collectors only. Both of the remixes for "Again" are unique, but not necessary to live. The first one is on the box set, and the second can be heard at the end of the CD-Rom game that also comes in the box set. So hard core collectors will not be disappointed, others may cringe at the price.

5 out of 5 stars Even for 1 or 2 new tracks, it's still worth it........2002-10-31

The only differences between this and the original is that the front is white without the dog and there are two remixes of "Again". The first remix ,"Tattoo of Pain Mix", is already available in the AiC boxset but the only unreleased track here is the Jungle remix. But for that track, it's worth it. The only downside to this for anyone, is the pricing, which is at $42.99. Yea...if you want it, you gotta pay it.
