Literate, recombinant indie-pop doesn't get much better than Scottish act Camera Obscura. And Let's Get Out of This Country, their third album, is easily their best yet. The male-female vocals of their first two albums are gone, as John Henderson's left the band. But as the album was recorded in Sweden with Jari Haapalainen, the dude who helped the Concretes achieve their Spector-ish, candy-coated sheen, the same charms are at work here. "Dory Previn" is a slow country rocker that recalls the pastoral sound of the sorely-missed band Opal, while other songs are more organ-driven and rollicking. Lead singer-songwriter Tracyanne Campbell's lyrics are smart, wonderful, and direct ("You can't see that you're the same as all the stupid people that you hate / I'm not saying I'm free from blame because I need all the friends I can get"). This is orchestral pop that's immaculately produced and fun as hell, even though the protagonists of the songs readily, almost selflessly dive into the sloppiest of romantic situations ("I've got my life of complication here to sort out"). --Mike McGonigalAlbum Description
The stellar new album from Glasgow's spectacular pop sextet was influenced by a wide variety of heroes: Jimmy Webb, Lloyd Cole, Connie Francis, Skeeter Davis, The Supremes, and David Lynch. Decidedly upbeat and catchy while also beautifully romantic, quiet, and reflective, this record does not disappoint. The LP includes a coupon for a free MP3 download of "Let's Get Out Of This Country".Customer Reviews:
Very beautiful album.......2007-04-21
The lead singers voice has an irresistible cracking sound. I don't know any better way to put it. It's very very beautiful. And she has a Scottish accent that definitely comes out in the singing, and that makes everything even better.
While all of the songs are great, "Lloyd, I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken", "Tears For Affairs", and "The False Contender" are my favorite. They make me smile and make me thankful that I live in a world with such beautiful music.
Ready to be heartbroken.......2007-04-06
The opening song "Lloyd I'm Ready to Be Heartbroken" is a deliciously catchy pop number full of soaring strings and rattly tambourine, which is a response to Lloyd Cole's "Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken?" Most of it, though, is just about a girl who has "a life of complication to sort out."
It's followed up by the folky, accordion-riddled little melody of "Tears For Affairs," an anguished little song played in a very peppy, upbeat manner. That is the basic template for the songs on this album: frolicking catchy indiepop, warm ballads, rippling organ rockers, bouncy alt-rock, and ambient, wintry pop filled with strings.
And every single one is about breaking up with someone, cheating on someone, or leaving someone behind.
Camera Obscura are always working to break out of Belle & Sebastian's shadow, since they're both quirky chamberpop bands from Scotland. But "Let's Get Out of This Country" shows that their music is of a totally different kind -- it's darker, less pensive and bookish, and more filled with raw emotion.
The music is overflowing with peppy instrumentation -- violin, trumpet, tambourine, some mandolin and subtle accordion laid over the basic bouncy guitars and drums. And of course, there's warm waves of organ adding a colourful edge, and helping to accentuate just how fun and pretty the music is.
Until you actually listen to the words: all of them are sad and anguished, except maybe the cryptic "Razzle Dazzle Rose, which seems a bit out of place here. All of it is in Tracyanne Campbell's pretty mellow voice. "Come back Margaret, he wants to adore you/Come back Margaret, I'd like to explore you/Can't you see the tears in my eyes/With love for him I disguise?"
"Let's Get Out of this Country" is the sprightliest album ever to be filled with woe and relationship misery, and Camera Obscura did a brilliant job linking the two sounds. Definitely worth hearing.
MELODIC PARADISE.......2007-03-30
forget the lyrics... they're kinda schoolgirlish.. if you sit back and just dream away to the music... its quite a trip.
you do not buy this for the intellectual value... its the melody writing ability of this band thats worth your dollar.
It's The Bee's Knees..........2007-03-07
Lead singer/songwriter Tracyanne Campbell's vocal range may not be huge, but she sings with passion and a sort of languid power over dense, 60's inspired soundscapes with production heavily reminiscent of the famous Phil Spector "Wall Of Sound." That is to say, a lot of echo and reverb, not to mention unusual instrumentation and arrangements with a heavy early to mid-sixties feel.
Most of the numbers are mid-tempo, but I think Camera Obscura really shines on their faster numbers, such as the Cardigans-esque "Lloyd, I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken" and "If Looks Could Kill," the latter of which is a very rousing mod throwback to 60's girl groups, Carnaby Street, Swinging London, Pet Clark, Sandie Shaw, Cilla Black, etc., with drumming that rivals Iggy Pop's "Lust For Life" for bombast.
And the slower numbers are beautiful as well. The group shows a lot of 'range' here, with the countryish sounds of "Dory Previn", the lounge-y "Tears For Affairs", and the epic, movie soundtrack sounding "Country Mile' (the title suits the track very well.) The closing track, "Razzle Dazzle Rose", is absolutely fantastic, especially the last minute or so, where the song morphs from a breezy bounce into a prolonged, amazingly slow, Spanish Bullfighter Brass section. At that point, I'm not sure *what* to call the music I'm hearing, but I like it...
A final note I wanted to add is that while historically singers from England and Scotland have tried to "Americanize" their accents somewhat (as in Joe Jackson, etc.), Campbell lets her Scots accent come through very well. Although the words are easily understandable, her vowels are a lot of fun! If you like strong melodies, unique arrangements, and that wistful Scots sound, you'll enjoy this one. ;oD

I have been a reader of the Aubrey Maturin Novels for 8 years (only two a year for dramatic suspense) and while I am a huge fan of Patrick O'Brian's writing, I find that with the addition of the music he scored his work to, I stand in awe. The music is well grounded to the situations and feelings in the book. Either Mr. O'Brian was a very well rounded, or he did his homework.
The CD is a wonderful insight to the author, and the characters he created. Pour a glass of claret, listen to the cd, read the books...
but pay no heed to Killick's "scrape, scrape , scrape..never a song you could dance to.."

Album Description
This Seattle duo made an album with soft, layered vocals that float over textural acoustics, "In Camera" is an audible effigy of a time past, and an album made for forgetting and remembering. Drawing sonic inspiration from the Velvet Underground as well as the studio experimentation of Lee Hazlewood, each track is a study in expansion, centered loosely around chiming guitars and swirling melodies. Grant Olsen's hazy croon is lifted by the smooth harmonies of Sonya Westcott, and both reel in the influence of Nancy Sinatra between the familiar crash of a tambourine and layers of guitar. This debut is built upon nostalgia and exudes an undeniably earnest warmth.Customer Reviews:

A completely enchanting, delightful album.......2006-09-15
But though Camera Obscura reminds one of Belle and Sebastian, the resemblence never, ever gets in the way of the music. Both bands generate a feeling of joy and delight when I listen to them.
The only complaint I have with UNDERACHIEVERS PLEASE TRY HARDER is that they have packed their very best songs at the beginning of the album. My two favorite songs on the disc are the fine "Suspended from Class" and the even finer (and very, very Belle and Sebastianesque) "Keep It Clean." My next favorite song, however, might be "A Sister's Social Agony." Mind you, the rest of the album never truly disappoints, but it seems a bit of a downer to kick things off with such great songs and then never quite get back up to that level. Of course, this might just be me. Another fan might enjoy later cuts more. But I'm in love with "Keep It Clean." It currently is in my Top 25 Most Played list on my iPod. I love everything about the song, its casual, melodic guitar work, the delicate electric piano, and most of all Tracyanne Campbell's relaxed, almost flippant singing. I delight in the way she is so patient with the words that she sometimes seems to finish a line merely as an afterthought. It is one of those songs that I sometimes will play if I'm having a tough day. It never failed to lighten my mood and make me just a little bit happier than I was.
One thing that excites me about Camera Obscura is that they apparently are improving with each album. I very much enjoyed their first album, BIGGEST, BLUEST HI-FI, but this album was a definite improvement over that. And their most recent album, LET'S GET OUT OF THIS COUNTRY (the best song off that one, the stunning "Lloyd, I'm Ready to Be Heartbroken," has achieved some success as a single), is even better. It was better, in fact, than Belle and Sebastian's own 2006 release, THE LIFE PURSUIT. So who knows, perhaps the best is yet to come.
Cool.......2006-07-04
Cute 50's-60's stylings. Melodic -- Wonderful........2006-06-12
Anyway, there are few, if any, synths -- the warm recording and instrumentation are all they need to make their music work. The girl/boy vocals are each unlike anything sung in at least 20 years and together just make me want to melt.
Also, fans of Saturday Looks Good to Me will enjoy, but I must warn you -- this album never really rocks out. It keeps a cool melodic additude throughout. Lunar Sea is bliss.

The soundtrack to a Russian silent film originally released in 1929, Man With a Movie Camera whips up a maelstrom of moody, electronica-tinged jazz-funk. In 1999, the Portugese film festival selection committee asked Cinematic Orchestra's Jason Swinscoe to compose a new score for a screening of Dziga Vertov's avant-garde classic with live orchestral accompaniment. The result is a limber collection that flirts with brilliance while never quite coming together as an entity separate from the movie itself. For the full effect, listeners are advised to check out the film's DVD release, which features this music in its intended setting. Having said that, there is much to recommend here for fans of Cinematic Orchestra's post-modern, acid jazz fixations; "The Awakening of a Woman (Burnout)," for instance, slinks along on a decadent groove, as does the skittish "Reel Life (Evolution II)." By improving an already classic film with these sly compositions, Swinscoe's band lives up to its name with elegant style and sophistication. --Matthew CookeAlbum Description

If Only I Could Make You Listen.......2005-12-02
The Way all 'Soundtrack' Derived albums should sound...........2005-02-07
The styles of music here, are a far more sombre and melancholic than previous albums, with the tempo generally being more thoughtful & considered, with various nods to 70's Jazz, with Sax, Violin and bass & trumpet producing something more akin to 'Miles Davis'' more subdued moments. The first 3 or so tracks are more introductory pieces, full of brushed drums, and muted sax, and it's not until track four's "The Awakening of a Woman (Burnout)", that the first true full-blown track begins to take shape. It's a minimal contemplative mood, subtle electronics fill the gaps where real instrumentation would normally be, and the effect is akin to listening to a dusty 1940's black & White thriller, reliant on the music to convey the context of the film.
There are touches of more upbeat arrangements, but nothing here that quite matches some of the more frenetic workouts on previous albums, bear in mind that it's composed soundtrack music, and that it truly impresses when listened to late and night with the lighting down low, and with minimal distractions. Although it must be mentioned that the drum programming throughtout this album is nothing short of amazing, in parts complex and expressive and largely prominent, and in other parts, organic and reflective enough to not dominate any tracks. The performance throughout are inspired, intimate tightly composed arrangements from composers / arrangers that seem to have an meticulous understanding of jazz, insofar as mood, complexity & arrangement and depth, which has proved invaluable in the creation of this album. The Cinematic Orchestra play to their strengths here, as the soundtrack is eclectic, and laid-back through the use of perfect sampling touching on various elements of Jazz, with Miles-esque grooves as well as: Film-noir, Instrumental jazz/funk fusion, Downbeat, orchestral soundtracks, ambient electronica and improvisational jazz.
Not all the listeners of Cinematic Orchestra's previous albums will get on with this album. Not because of a drop in quality, but more to do with the fact that this really is soundtrack music, so the work with vocalists on previous album is nowhere to be seen here. It's also arguable that there's a distinct drop in tempo, with some of the very short pieces being more 'Musical Sketches' than fully formed tracks. While the album is a seamless whole, it's a far less immediate album than anything they have done previously, and if the expectations are that there'll be the sharp, energetic tracks such as "All Things to All Men", will be disappointed with the relaxed pace here, which is a shame, as the arrangements here rival anything on their previous work (just at a far more subtle pace). It's also worth noting that several tracks from their previous album "Every Day", make a return here, but in instrumental form, minus the vocals, or slightly modified ("Burnout", "Evolution", "Man with the movie Camera", "All things to all men"), and
hearing them without the vocals, exemplifies how beautifully arranged and composed the music truly is, lush orchestration and moody cinematic, ambitious tracks, make for some sublime listening.
If your new to the music of "Cinematic Orchestra", this is a remarkable album of which there is no doubt (check out how many 5 Star ratings it has below this review), but...and it has to be said, that to start with, you'd (at first) be better served, with starting your enquires, into their music via the first two albums "Motion" & "Everyday", as there are arguably the more immediate albums, be it the use of vocalists or the more upbeat arrangements. I found that having thoroughly enjoyed the previous albums, made entering into this album of rainy-day arrangements, melodically textured interludes, and instrumental classical/Jazz tracks, far easier to digest. Of course if you are into classically arranged 'Soundtrack' music, then I suggest, that this will be your preferred album. Anyways regardless, whether you work your way up to this album via the previous albums, or your an existing fan, this carries on the Cinematic Orchestra's run of consistently superb albums.

The Italian mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli is one of the most charming and talented singers to appear on the scene in recent years, and this collection of Italian songs by three great opera composers--Bellini, Donizetti, and Rossini--is a most deserving bestseller. There are many small pleasures in the selections, which reflect the bel canto predilections of their authors, and Bartoli renders them artfully. Some will be familiar even to casual listeners (Rossini's La Danza, the famous tarantella); others will be new to most, but equally deserving of a hearing. The sensitive and skillful accompaniment is by conductor-pianist James Levine. --Sarah Bryan MillerCustomer Reviews:
Lovely rendition of Italian songs.......2007-03-11
Some sampling of the songs. . . . The CD begins with a song by Rossini, "Aragones." This is lushly sung; Bartoli has a wondrously rich and textured voice. The pace is contemplative, altogether consistent with the words of the song, the reflection of a disappointed lover. Well done.
Donizetti's "Il barcaiolo" is also well done. Bartoli shows her vocal agility in this tune. This is a spirited song, and her coloratura technique animates her rendition. There are segments sung forte, showing the power of her voice. There is a nice soft closing to the song, so she ranges from forte to piano.
Bellini is represented, too. His "Vaga luna che inargenti" is a pleasant love song. Bartoli sings this tenderly, creating a melancholy spirit, fitting the song's words.
To close, there is Rossini's wonderful tarantella, "La danza." Levine plays at a quick pace, as he must for this spirited song. Bartoli shows great vocal agility and strong breath control (this is a tough song to get right!). A wonderfully spirited version. She even takes a pass at a trill toward the close. All in all, most satisfying.
Thus, this represents a nice CD, showing Bartoli's skills with the songs of some of the great Bel Canto composers. An album that is a lot of fun to listen to!
Best 'Italian' Selection yet........2006-06-16
This would be my first choice for Italian material with only piano accompaniment. For a very first Bartoli album, see her 'flagship' recording, 'Cecilia Bartoli' where she is backed by full orchestra and chorus.
Salon pieces to delight the listener.......2006-03-13
This in no way robs the songs of immense charm. It would be easy to perform these songs without a great deal of thought, simply making them sound "pretty". But Cecilia Bartoli never does that - she always gives everything, voice, intelligence, musicality, to her performance.
That is what makes this recording so superb. I can see there are some less-than-satisfied reviewers - I am surprised by the comments. For rest assured, there is no vocal difficulty here at all. Cecilia Bartoli's voice is in superb condition throughout, and her interpretation is of course second to none. Having recorded "Vaga luna" myself, I would be the first to say if I thought anything was lacking in Ms Bartoli's performance - but there's nothing adverse I can say at all. It's simply gorgeous singing, with immaculate phrasing, an intensely personal approach, and some of the most beautiful sounds you're likely to hear.
It is hard to imagine anyone being disappointed by this recording. The comments made about squally sound are not just unfair, they're totally inaccurate. I remember purchasing this CD on the very day it was released in Australia, and it's a firm favourite of mine.
In all... delightful.

Less restraint , more feeling.......2006-05-12
For the most part many of these songs demonstrate the colder, more distant aspects of pop songwriting, however warm the "vibe" would have us believe, with their autopilot musicality and predictable tunes. On the few songs that do feel more inspired then the generic majority, it is definately possible to see future pop majesty this band is capable of achieving, albiet it in a watered down farmiliar way to anyone who has ever picked up an older Belle and Sebastian album, whose shadow will hopefully prove underwhelming on future releases.
A fine debut..........2005-09-30
This album is a lot less pretentious, a bit more tuneful, and lacks the filler of "Underachievers..." For all those who cry wolf at any similarites between this band and Belle & Sebastian, sit and spin. I think B&S would sell their souls to make anything this vital again.
"Eighties Fan" is a nice homage to The Jesus And Mary Chain, with it's "Just Like Honey" drum intro, while "Happy New Year" kicks the album off like no other pop song could (or has, in recent memory). My personal fave has to be "Pen And Notebook", with brilliantly simplistic lyrics, and a pristine, very spare production that can't be touched.

Aztec Camera--the Great Forgotten Pop Band of the 80s.......2003-10-31
Aztec Camera never really caught on in the United States. Finding their music in record stores was difficult, and rarely was their music ever played on the radio. After listening to The Best of Aztec Camera, I still remain mystified as to why the band never found an American audience because they delivered some of the most insanely tuneful and pitch-perfect pop songs of the 1980s. Roddy Frame, the band's song writer and lead singer, had impeccable pop instincts and was a stellar guitar player to boot. Aztec Camera deserves wider recognition, and if you don't believe me, listen to The Best of Aztec Camera for yourself.
In addition to "All I Need is Everything," the album contains delightful gems like "Oblivious," "Walk Out to Winter," and "Pillar to Post." Plus, you get the hilariously low-key re-make of Van Halen's "Jump." There are a few notable omissions. (How could they not include "Still on Fire"?) And I'm not particularly fond of some of Roddy Frame's excursions into blue-eyed soul. However, on the whole, this is a solid set of songs from a vastly under-recognized and underappreciated band. Do yourself a favor and get the album. It is superior pop music.

I was compelled to write this review, though, having just purchased this latest greatest hits collection (two others, in the past, have been available as bootlegs -- I think they were promotional hoo-hahs of some sort or another), and wanting to assure potential buyers of three things:
1. You must buy this CD. If you know Aztec Camera, you know why. If you don't know Aztec Camera -- sheesh! -- you should.
2. If you don't know Aztec Camera, this is a great introduction, though there are many lamented absences ("Mattress of Wire," "Stray," "The Boy Wonders" and "Still on Fire" come to mind, any one of which I would have gladly traded for "The Crying Scene").
3. This should not be the only Aztec Camera album you purchase. You should get the full effect (not just the singles) of (AT LEAST) High Land, Hard Rain; Knife; and Dreamland. Not everything is in print, but if you prowl Amazon and your local record shop (both indies and chains -- my local Tower evidently has an import buyer with a thing for Aztec Camera, because I can always find something) you'll be able to piece together the collection you should have been building all along.
I'll stop now, but not before imploring you to ignore all those who say that the "Love" album sucks ('shallow lyrics, whine whine, blah blah' -- crud! Roddy with slick production and semi-fraudulent soul is STILL Roddy) or that "Stray" sucks ('what happened to the pop whine, whine blah blah' -- crud! all crud! 'Stray' is sigh-inducingly beautiful) and to discover Roddy for yourself. Now! You'll be glad you did.

Slow, tuneless, boring........2007-07-13
Bettered by the real thing.......2007-03-21
Well, what can I say, I love this CD, her voice is fluid and elegant, sharp but not cutting, well formed and with a force that can be projected or held, it's a wonderful CD on so many levels and one I have never grown tired of listening to each morning, what a great way to start the day! As an introduction to operatic arias I would certainly recommend this as I am sure it would surprise and enchant even the most hardened of sceptics who think that "Opera is not for me", or that there was no life after Callas.
This afternoon I was very fortunate to have 5th row seats at her spring recital, here in Japan, and what a truly awe-inspiring performance. A genuine world-class soprano Sumi Jo certainly is. Today's repertoire ran from Handel, Vivaldi, Benedict, Strauss, Bellini to Verdi. Singing comfortably in FOUR languages she delivered a performance that the CD in now way prepared me for. A performance that brought her four encores, numerous standing ovations and thunderous applause from a usually reserved (Japanese) audience. Besides her obvious musical talents I have to say that I found her to be such a marvellously warm and appreciative human being who was genuinely appreciative of her audience and I can't wait to get out there and listen to more of the joy that is Sumi Jo.
Sumi Jo tackles Belcanto.......2006-11-03
In particular, her readings of "Star vicino" (Rosa), "Alma del core" (Caldara), and "Intorno all'idol mio" (Cesti) are chill-inducing. Supported by Vincenzo Scalera on the piano, the feather-light voice of Sumi Jo glides through these pieces with enviable skill. A beautifully-presented album.

A promise fulfilled.......2004-10-28
Loverly voice, perfect technique.......2003-04-04
There is no doubt about her voice and technique, which is one of the best among her peers today. But even in her best reviewed CDs and live performances, I always felt there is a little regret, which is the lack of passion. Behind her crystallike and gentle voice, I found the music is second to the technical showoff, or maybe I should say she is so perfect techincally that the music content was overshadowed. While, from another perspective, all her CDs can be perfect text books for students.
