Literate, recombinant indie-pop doesn't get much better than Scottish act Camera Obscura. And Let's Get Out of This Country, their third album, is easily their best yet. The male-female vocals of their first two albums are gone, as John Henderson's left the band. But as the album was recorded in Sweden with Jari Haapalainen, the dude who helped the Concretes achieve their Spector-ish, candy-coated sheen, the same charms are at work here. "Dory Previn" is a slow country rocker that recalls the pastoral sound of the sorely-missed band Opal, while other songs are more organ-driven and rollicking. Lead singer-songwriter Tracyanne Campbell's lyrics are smart, wonderful, and direct ("You can't see that you're the same as all the stupid people that you hate / I'm not saying I'm free from blame because I need all the friends I can get"). This is orchestral pop that's immaculately produced and fun as hell, even though the protagonists of the songs readily, almost selflessly dive into the sloppiest of romantic situations ("I've got my life of complication here to sort out"). --Mike McGonigal

Album Description

The stellar new album from Glasgow's spectacular pop sextet was influenced by a wide variety of heroes: Jimmy Webb, Lloyd Cole, Connie Francis, Skeeter Davis, The Supremes, and David Lynch. Decidedly upbeat and catchy while also beautifully romantic, quiet, and reflective, this record does not disappoint. The LP includes a coupon for a free MP3 download of "Let's Get Out Of This Country".

5 out of 5 stars Very beautiful album.......2007-04-21

I first heard this band on KEXP's live music podcast and I was blown away. I listened to it three times in a row, bought the album, and then listened to the live performance again. The sound is very interesting, it seems like it could have been recorded in the 60s. My brother says that it sounds like church music.

The lead singers voice has an irresistible cracking sound. I don't know any better way to put it. It's very very beautiful. And she has a Scottish accent that definitely comes out in the singing, and that makes everything even better.

While all of the songs are great, "Lloyd, I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken", "Tears For Affairs", and "The False Contender" are my favorite. They make me smile and make me thankful that I live in a world with such beautiful music.

4 out of 5 stars Ready to be heartbroken.......2007-04-06

Breaking up is painful and miserable, though sometimes necessary. And evidently that's what was on the mind of Camera Obscura as they created "Let's Get Out of This Country." These Scottish indiepoppers created a smooth, nostalgic, rippling little pop gem full of doleful emotion, and boy does it feel good.

The opening song "Lloyd I'm Ready to Be Heartbroken" is a deliciously catchy pop number full of soaring strings and rattly tambourine, which is a response to Lloyd Cole's "Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken?" Most of it, though, is just about a girl who has "a life of complication to sort out."

It's followed up by the folky, accordion-riddled little melody of "Tears For Affairs," an anguished little song played in a very peppy, upbeat manner. That is the basic template for the songs on this album: frolicking catchy indiepop, warm ballads, rippling organ rockers, bouncy alt-rock, and ambient, wintry pop filled with strings.

And every single one is about breaking up with someone, cheating on someone, or leaving someone behind.

Camera Obscura are always working to break out of Belle & Sebastian's shadow, since they're both quirky chamberpop bands from Scotland. But "Let's Get Out of This Country" shows that their music is of a totally different kind -- it's darker, less pensive and bookish, and more filled with raw emotion.

The music is overflowing with peppy instrumentation -- violin, trumpet, tambourine, some mandolin and subtle accordion laid over the basic bouncy guitars and drums. And of course, there's warm waves of organ adding a colourful edge, and helping to accentuate just how fun and pretty the music is.

Until you actually listen to the words: all of them are sad and anguished, except maybe the cryptic "Razzle Dazzle Rose, which seems a bit out of place here. All of it is in Tracyanne Campbell's pretty mellow voice. "Come back Margaret, he wants to adore you/Come back Margaret, I'd like to explore you/Can't you see the tears in my eyes/With love for him I disguise?"

"Let's Get Out of this Country" is the sprightliest album ever to be filled with woe and relationship misery, and Camera Obscura did a brilliant job linking the two sounds. Definitely worth hearing.

5 out of 5 stars MELODIC PARADISE.......2007-03-30

If you love gorgeous pick me up melodies, this is it.

forget the lyrics... they're kinda schoolgirlish.. if you sit back and just dream away to the music... its quite a trip.

you do not buy this for the intellectual value... its the melody writing ability of this band thats worth your dollar.

5 out of 5 stars It's The Bee's Knees..........2007-03-07

This little-known Scottish group has made a beautiful album of melancholy pop with "Let's Get Out Of This Country." It's one of the freshest and most exciting new discs I've heard in a while.

Lead singer/songwriter Tracyanne Campbell's vocal range may not be huge, but she sings with passion and a sort of languid power over dense, 60's inspired soundscapes with production heavily reminiscent of the famous Phil Spector "Wall Of Sound." That is to say, a lot of echo and reverb, not to mention unusual instrumentation and arrangements with a heavy early to mid-sixties feel.

Most of the numbers are mid-tempo, but I think Camera Obscura really shines on their faster numbers, such as the Cardigans-esque "Lloyd, I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken" and "If Looks Could Kill," the latter of which is a very rousing mod throwback to 60's girl groups, Carnaby Street, Swinging London, Pet Clark, Sandie Shaw, Cilla Black, etc., with drumming that rivals Iggy Pop's "Lust For Life" for bombast.

And the slower numbers are beautiful as well. The group shows a lot of 'range' here, with the countryish sounds of "Dory Previn", the lounge-y "Tears For Affairs", and the epic, movie soundtrack sounding "Country Mile' (the title suits the track very well.) The closing track, "Razzle Dazzle Rose", is absolutely fantastic, especially the last minute or so, where the song morphs from a breezy bounce into a prolonged, amazingly slow, Spanish Bullfighter Brass section. At that point, I'm not sure *what* to call the music I'm hearing, but I like it...

A final note I wanted to add is that while historically singers from England and Scotland have tried to "Americanize" their accents somewhat (as in Joe Jackson, etc.), Campbell lets her Scots accent come through very well. Although the words are easily understandable, her vowels are a lot of fun! If you like strong melodies, unique arrangements, and that wistful Scots sound, you'll enjoy this one. ;oD

5 out of 5 stars Great CO CD!!!!.......2007-01-11

Camera Obscura just blew my mind! Soft voices and melancholic melodies... So scottish!!! I loved every single song. Fully recomend it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2007-04-24

I've owned this CD for several years now, and it definitely remains on my short, short list of favorites! The music is beautiful and contemplative, drawing the listener into the journey of migration undertaken by the birds who inspired it. Everything is amazing on it: the writing, the instrumentation, the vocals. This albumn is definitely not just for fans of the movie, but for anyone who loves slow, calming, thoughtful music.

4 out of 5 stars Winged Migration CD.......2007-02-08

Awesome, for the most part- best after watching the documentary. A couple of songs had to skip through, but the rest is a good post movie mental review- watch the movie first...

I loved this movie and the soundtrack makes it ever better. I havent bought a CD in a while and this one is reasonably priced and rare.

5 out of 5 stars WINGED MIGRATION.......2006-08-29

The movie is excellent. The scenery is breathtaking, but you actually feel like you are flying with the geese. Geese are amazing birds. A must see.

5 out of 5 stars THE RIGHT MUSIC FOR THE RIGHT MOVIE.......2006-06-22

Even if you haven't seen the beautiful french documentary, you'll love this soundtrack. The score captivates listeners from the very beginning and the song "To Be By Your Side" by Nick Cave gives the very special mood that the movie requires. Bruno Coulais is the same composer from HIMALAYA, thus you may understand better the sort of music you're listening: half ethnic, half new age and totally haunting. Don't miss it.

Enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2007-04-05

I bought this as an accompaniment while I read Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series of books, and it goes very well. I've enjoyed every piece on this album, and recommend it for music lovers and readers alike.

5 out of 5 stars excellent compile.......2007-01-16

It is dead-on excellent. Perfectly in tune with the entire series and spirit of Patrick's work. A simply joy to listen to time after time. You grasp the character of the age in crisply performed versions of various collection.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasant backdrop .......2006-01-10

As a child growing up in the city of Salem, known for it's working class backbone, I was the only kid I knew who had been to Symphony Hall more than Fenway Park. Going in to Boston for the symphony's open practices was what I lived for. It gave me a true appreciative, although untrained ear. The one lasting lesson is that while you may not notice good classical music, EVERYONE notices bad classical music. And this is NOT bad classical.

I have been a reader of the Aubrey Maturin Novels for 8 years (only two a year for dramatic suspense) and while I am a huge fan of Patrick O'Brian's writing, I find that with the addition of the music he scored his work to, I stand in awe. The music is well grounded to the situations and feelings in the book. Either Mr. O'Brian was a very well rounded, or he did his homework.

The CD is a wonderful insight to the author, and the characters he created. Pour a glass of claret, listen to the cd, read the books...

but pay no heed to Killick's "scrape, scrape , scrape..never a song you could dance to.."

5 out of 5 stars Musical soothing of the soul.......2002-06-11

I have been a fan of Baroque music since childhood (and I'm not all that old either). But I've only started reading the Patrick O'Brian books in the last few months, since it was announced that my favorite actor, Russell Crowe, was about to star as Captain Jack Aubrey in the Peter Weir movie. I am reading the books in order, and am currently on "HMS Surprise," so what else could be a more perfect accompaniment than this CD? Aubrey is such a multi-layered character, filled with imperfections and bad puns, however he has a great love for music and he plays the violin quite well. Often paired with ship's surgeon Dr. Stephen Maturin on the cello, music is a great release for this sea captain, and the pieces on this CD are fine representations of what Aubrey might have played while on assignment or heard when on land. The selections by Hadyn, Locatelli, Handel, Boccherini and Leclair are pleasant, soothing compositions that are complex and varied enough that they are not redundant, and range from peaceful to nimble. While listening to the CD, I could vividly imagine Jack Aubrey below decks in his cabin and asking Maturin to strike up a tune with him. And then they begin an Andante or an Allegro, allowing Aubrey to set aside his absolutely awful puns and jokes so he can clear his mind and relax. Considering some of the battles he's involved himself in so far in the series, he definitely needs it. Reading his adventures while listening to these charming pieces will relax you as well, and definitely take your imagination to some wondrous places in an era of great change.

Album Description

This Seattle duo made an album with soft, layered vocals that float over textural acoustics, "In Camera" is an audible effigy of a time past, and an album made for forgetting and remembering. Drawing sonic inspiration from the Velvet Underground as well as the studio experimentation of Lee Hazlewood, each track is a study in expansion, centered loosely around chiming guitars and swirling melodies. Grant Olsen's hazy croon is lifted by the smooth harmonies of Sonya Westcott, and both reel in the influence of Nancy Sinatra between the familiar crash of a tambourine and layers of guitar. This debut is built upon nostalgia and exudes an undeniably earnest warmth.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A completely enchanting, delightful album.......2006-09-15

Anyone hearing Camera Obscura for the first time will instantly be reminded of Belle and Sebastian, especially if they are aware that both bands hail from Glasgow. There is no question that Belle and Sebastian is the major influence on the band; even if they have other influences--and one can hear many in their music--this one predominates. It isn't just that Camera Obscura's singer (and a very sweet singer she is) Tracyanne Campbell sounds a lot like Belle and Sebastian's Isobel Campbell (apparently no relation--but, then, isn't "Campbell" in Scotland like "Smith" in the US?). The arrangements and feel and touch of the band sound terribly like B & S. That one city could turn out two such exquisite indie pop bands is pretty remarkable, even if the one sounds a lot like the other.

But though Camera Obscura reminds one of Belle and Sebastian, the resemblence never, ever gets in the way of the music. Both bands generate a feeling of joy and delight when I listen to them.

The only complaint I have with UNDERACHIEVERS PLEASE TRY HARDER is that they have packed their very best songs at the beginning of the album. My two favorite songs on the disc are the fine "Suspended from Class" and the even finer (and very, very Belle and Sebastianesque) "Keep It Clean." My next favorite song, however, might be "A Sister's Social Agony." Mind you, the rest of the album never truly disappoints, but it seems a bit of a downer to kick things off with such great songs and then never quite get back up to that level. Of course, this might just be me. Another fan might enjoy later cuts more. But I'm in love with "Keep It Clean." It currently is in my Top 25 Most Played list on my iPod. I love everything about the song, its casual, melodic guitar work, the delicate electric piano, and most of all Tracyanne Campbell's relaxed, almost flippant singing. I delight in the way she is so patient with the words that she sometimes seems to finish a line merely as an afterthought. It is one of those songs that I sometimes will play if I'm having a tough day. It never failed to lighten my mood and make me just a little bit happier than I was.

One thing that excites me about Camera Obscura is that they apparently are improving with each album. I very much enjoyed their first album, BIGGEST, BLUEST HI-FI, but this album was a definite improvement over that. And their most recent album, LET'S GET OUT OF THIS COUNTRY (the best song off that one, the stunning "Lloyd, I'm Ready to Be Heartbroken," has achieved some success as a single), is even better. It was better, in fact, than Belle and Sebastian's own 2006 release, THE LIFE PURSUIT. So who knows, perhaps the best is yet to come.

5 out of 5 stars Cool.......2006-07-04

They are totally unknown here. I only got to know this group on the net and i have found gem in Camera Obscura, with such sweet melodies, angelic voice of Traceyann Campbell and the rest of the band is awesome as well! Im hooked with Suspended from Class, Keep it Clean, Number One Son & Teenager.

5 out of 5 stars Cute 50's-60's stylings. Melodic -- Wonderful........2006-06-12

Seems like many people are mad that this isn't Bell & Sebastian. Well, It's not. It's probably closer to the stylings of The Clientelle or late era Yo La Tengo -- and they're not Scottish...?
Anyway, there are few, if any, synths -- the warm recording and instrumentation are all they need to make their music work. The girl/boy vocals are each unlike anything sung in at least 20 years and together just make me want to melt.
Also, fans of Saturday Looks Good to Me will enjoy, but I must warn you -- this album never really rocks out. It keeps a cool melodic additude throughout. Lunar Sea is bliss.

5 out of 5 stars Whoever wrote the frist review cannot have been listening to the same album .......2006-02-24

Dont listen to the first review, this record is ace. The vocals are very beautiful and genuine. Overall, this record has an intimate bewitching beauty that drags you in with each listen.

4 out of 5 stars get this album. you will find yourself chained to it........2005-10-05

i've been listening to this for three days now, with very little in between. see, normally, i listen to various music which would fall under the categories indie and emo, but not just to be emo. before i found this i was on an at the drive-in binge mixed in with some drive like jehu, sparta, million dead, fugazi and cursive. i saw this album on some emo girl's xanga, and though i usually don't trust emo girl's music taste, i liked the cover, and figured i'd get it and see how i liked it. i have no idea what anybody means by folk pop, because this doesn't seem related to the folk im familiar with, except that it's pretty much oblivious to subject matter. but anyway...this album is really great...production, tracyanne's voice, the beats and selection of instruments. my only complaint is the guy's singing. it's not unbearable but close. especially on the song "your picture". i have to skip over that now, it's like they give him the least rhythmic songs to sing on too. the two bonus tracks aren't really very necessary either. this album isn't emo - i didn't even have to say that - but it is something people could appreciate for...the same reason. make sense? best songs are "suspended from class", "teenager", "number one son" and "lunar sea". light one up and put this cd on, it'll feel good.

The soundtrack to a Russian silent film originally released in 1929, Man With a Movie Camera whips up a maelstrom of moody, electronica-tinged jazz-funk. In 1999, the Portugese film festival selection committee asked Cinematic Orchestra's Jason Swinscoe to compose a new score for a screening of Dziga Vertov's avant-garde classic with live orchestral accompaniment. The result is a limber collection that flirts with brilliance while never quite coming together as an entity separate from the movie itself. For the full effect, listeners are advised to check out the film's DVD release, which features this music in its intended setting. Having said that, there is much to recommend here for fans of Cinematic Orchestra's post-modern, acid jazz fixations; "The Awakening of a Woman (Burnout)," for instance, slinks along on a decadent groove, as does the skittish "Reel Life (Evolution II)." By improving an already classic film with these sly compositions, Swinscoe's band lives up to its name with elegant style and sophistication. --Matthew Cooke

5 out of 5 stars Astounding .......2007-02-02

This is one of the most original and cutting edge musical scores you'll here for awhile . After reading the reviews here I ordered the cd and I can honestly say it could be the best musical purchase I've made for a long time.
This is a full speaker workout I had to turn the sub off completely the bass lines and live drumming are that forceful. You really need to listen to this on a very good system at high volume to fully appreciate the intensity of it.

Should be mandatory taken when auditioning new audiophile equipment.

5 out of 5 stars If Only I Could Make You Listen.......2005-12-02

This music is something in and of itself. The music flows over you like warm water in the shower. The beats are mesmerizing and the sounds are phenomenal. If you're taking the time to read these reviews BUY THE CD! It will not disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars The Way all 'Soundtrack' Derived albums should sound...........2005-02-07

For the fourth of 'Cinematic Orchestra's' studio albums, (after 2002's sublime "Every Day" Album), is a commission for the soundtrack for a silent film of the same name ("The man with a Movie Camera"). sequenced and arranged, very differently from previous albums, because instead of the usual 7-8 tracks that most of their albums are made up of. This is expanded to a whooping 17 tracks, which are made up of full length tracks, short interludes and mid-length pieces, that more than likely, reflect the scenes of the film, that this album was recorded for. (I haven't seen the film)

The styles of music here, are a far more sombre and melancholic than previous albums, with the tempo generally being more thoughtful & considered, with various nods to 70's Jazz, with Sax, Violin and bass & trumpet producing something more akin to 'Miles Davis'' more subdued moments. The first 3 or so tracks are more introductory pieces, full of brushed drums, and muted sax, and it's not until track four's "The Awakening of a Woman (Burnout)", that the first true full-blown track begins to take shape. It's a minimal contemplative mood, subtle electronics fill the gaps where real instrumentation would normally be, and the effect is akin to listening to a dusty 1940's black & White thriller, reliant on the music to convey the context of the film.

There are touches of more upbeat arrangements, but nothing here that quite matches some of the more frenetic workouts on previous albums, bear in mind that it's composed soundtrack music, and that it truly impresses when listened to late and night with the lighting down low, and with minimal distractions. Although it must be mentioned that the drum programming throughtout this album is nothing short of amazing, in parts complex and expressive and largely prominent, and in other parts, organic and reflective enough to not dominate any tracks. The performance throughout are inspired, intimate tightly composed arrangements from composers / arrangers that seem to have an meticulous understanding of jazz, insofar as mood, complexity & arrangement and depth, which has proved invaluable in the creation of this album. The Cinematic Orchestra play to their strengths here, as the soundtrack is eclectic, and laid-back through the use of perfect sampling touching on various elements of Jazz, with Miles-esque grooves as well as: Film-noir, Instrumental jazz/funk fusion, Downbeat, orchestral soundtracks, ambient electronica and improvisational jazz.

Not all the listeners of Cinematic Orchestra's previous albums will get on with this album. Not because of a drop in quality, but more to do with the fact that this really is soundtrack music, so the work with vocalists on previous album is nowhere to be seen here. It's also arguable that there's a distinct drop in tempo, with some of the very short pieces being more 'Musical Sketches' than fully formed tracks. While the album is a seamless whole, it's a far less immediate album than anything they have done previously, and if the expectations are that there'll be the sharp, energetic tracks such as "All Things to All Men", will be disappointed with the relaxed pace here, which is a shame, as the arrangements here rival anything on their previous work (just at a far more subtle pace). It's also worth noting that several tracks from their previous album "Every Day", make a return here, but in instrumental form, minus the vocals, or slightly modified ("Burnout", "Evolution", "Man with the movie Camera", "All things to all men"), and
hearing them without the vocals, exemplifies how beautifully arranged and composed the music truly is, lush orchestration and moody cinematic, ambitious tracks, make for some sublime listening.

If your new to the music of "Cinematic Orchestra", this is a remarkable album of which there is no doubt (check out how many 5 Star ratings it has below this review), but...and it has to be said, that to start with, you'd (at first) be better served, with starting your enquires, into their music via the first two albums "Motion" & "Everyday", as there are arguably the more immediate albums, be it the use of vocalists or the more upbeat arrangements. I found that having thoroughly enjoyed the previous albums, made entering into this album of rainy-day arrangements, melodically textured interludes, and instrumental classical/Jazz tracks, far easier to digest. Of course if you are into classically arranged 'Soundtrack' music, then I suggest, that this will be your preferred album. Anyways regardless, whether you work your way up to this album via the previous albums, or your an existing fan, this carries on the Cinematic Orchestra's run of consistently superb albums.

*P.s. Don't forget to pick up their 'Remix' album as well*

5 out of 5 stars Complex mix of different genres of music.......2004-06-03

I first came across Cinematic Orchestra in a web discussion group, many cited it as a record of the year. Subsequently I purchased the CD, knowing fully that buying without trying usually leads to disappointment. My expectations were actually exceeded. Moody, complex, rich, the music projects a tinge of darkness at times but without any discomfort. On the contrary, most of the tracks are very enjoyable. Many artists try to mix different genres of music, but few deal with the complexity as coherently as CO in this CD in my humble opinion.

5 out of 5 stars CO's best effort yet.......2003-12-28

I have bought and listened to CO's three major albums in order (Motion, Every Day, and then Man With A Movie Camera), and I must say, I think this one is the best. In the others, the drums were sampled from CO's live player then fiddled with. In this album, he's just been recorded live, and as far as I can tell, no editing involved. That helps give the tracks much more 'feel' then they had previously. He's an absolutely ace drummer. Also, the tracks don't seem as repetitive as before, and really go places, taking you along for the ride. An extremely valued addition to my collection! Thanks CO!

The Italian mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli is one of the most charming and talented singers to appear on the scene in recent years, and this collection of Italian songs by three great opera composers--Bellini, Donizetti, and Rossini--is a most deserving bestseller. There are many small pleasures in the selections, which reflect the bel canto predilections of their authors, and Bartoli renders them artfully. Some will be familiar even to casual listeners (Rossini's La Danza, the famous tarantella); others will be new to most, but equally deserving of a hearing. The sensitive and skillful accompaniment is by conductor-pianist James Levine. --Sarah Bryan Miller

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lovely rendition of Italian songs.......2007-03-11

The booklet coming with the CD says of Cecilia Bartoli that she "is justly famous for her coloratura mezzo-soprano voice and her interpretations of Rossini and Mozart." This CD features her lush voice taking on songs of three great Bel Canto composers--Rossini, Bellini, and Donizetti. Some might think of these as trifles, but the singing and musicality is rich and the songs evocative. The piano accompaniment is by famed conductor James Levine, and he does a splendid job.

Some sampling of the songs. . . . The CD begins with a song by Rossini, "Aragones." This is lushly sung; Bartoli has a wondrously rich and textured voice. The pace is contemplative, altogether consistent with the words of the song, the reflection of a disappointed lover. Well done.

Donizetti's "Il barcaiolo" is also well done. Bartoli shows her vocal agility in this tune. This is a spirited song, and her coloratura technique animates her rendition. There are segments sung forte, showing the power of her voice. There is a nice soft closing to the song, so she ranges from forte to piano.

Bellini is represented, too. His "Vaga luna che inargenti" is a pleasant love song. Bartoli sings this tenderly, creating a melancholy spirit, fitting the song's words.

To close, there is Rossini's wonderful tarantella, "La danza." Levine plays at a quick pace, as he must for this spirited song. Bartoli shows great vocal agility and strong breath control (this is a tough song to get right!). A wonderfully spirited version. She even takes a pass at a trill toward the close. All in all, most satisfying.

Thus, this represents a nice CD, showing Bartoli's skills with the songs of some of the great Bel Canto composers. An album that is a lot of fun to listen to!

5 out of 5 stars Best 'Italian' Selection yet........2006-06-16

'An Italian Songbook' by mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli and accompaniest extraordinare, James Levine is the best of the three collections of Italian material from Bartoli I have reviewed to date. Much of this may be due to Levine, but I believe it is more due to the quality of the material selected. All songs are by 'heaviweights Vincenzo Belline, Gaetano Donizetti, and Gioachino Rossini. It is certainly not due to a difference in the quality of Ms. Bartoli's singing, which is uniformly beautiful throughout.

This would be my first choice for Italian material with only piano accompaniment. For a very first Bartoli album, see her 'flagship' recording, 'Cecilia Bartoli' where she is backed by full orchestra and chorus.

5 out of 5 stars Salon pieces to delight the listener.......2006-03-13

Italian art song never became the serious and high form of art that it did within Germany, and hasn't the same place in culture that the French mélodies had. Rather, Italian operatic composers wrote lighter vocal pieces with fairly simple piano accompaniment, designed to be performed in a more intimate setting. One hears immediately the Bellini line (so familiar to those who love Bellini's operas) in his songs - ditto with the Donizetti and Rossini songs.

This in no way robs the songs of immense charm. It would be easy to perform these songs without a great deal of thought, simply making them sound "pretty". But Cecilia Bartoli never does that - she always gives everything, voice, intelligence, musicality, to her performance.

That is what makes this recording so superb. I can see there are some less-than-satisfied reviewers - I am surprised by the comments. For rest assured, there is no vocal difficulty here at all. Cecilia Bartoli's voice is in superb condition throughout, and her interpretation is of course second to none. Having recorded "Vaga luna" myself, I would be the first to say if I thought anything was lacking in Ms Bartoli's performance - but there's nothing adverse I can say at all. It's simply gorgeous singing, with immaculate phrasing, an intensely personal approach, and some of the most beautiful sounds you're likely to hear.

It is hard to imagine anyone being disappointed by this recording. The comments made about squally sound are not just unfair, they're totally inaccurate. I remember purchasing this CD on the very day it was released in Australia, and it's a firm favourite of mine.

In all... delightful.

5 out of 5 stars The Italian Songbook.............2005-12-09

...........sung like a string of pearls. I have never heard "Vaga luna che inargenti" sung so beautifully radiant and lucid. What a contrast when listening to her mournful "L'abbandono" where she sounds so utterly sad and full of melancholy. Brilliant vocal colouring here. "Malincolia, ninfa gentile" is sung with the appropriate pathos but without gimmicks and tricks. Utterly gorgeous Bellinian line. "II fervido desiderio" is sung with just the right amount of yearning and passion. "Per pieta, bell'idol mio" finds her beautifully charming and endearing, who could say no to her? The closing piece, "La Danza" is a tasty little song that suits her to a T. In my humble opinion every young voice student should not only study the Italian Songbook but own this in order to hear how it's done. This is still my favourite Bartoli album.

4 out of 5 stars che bella.........2004-12-23

Cecilia Bartolia is such a refreshing singer in the current state of vocal affairs. For one thing, she is a serious student of the music she sings, and scorns all the 'popera' and crossover artists. She has sought out plenty of unknown/lesser known material to record (Salieri, Vivaldi, Gluck, etc). In the CD in question she does wonderful work with these Italian pezzi. Her voice is now dark, now breathy, now intense, always altered to reflect the words she is singing. Her vocal agility and control are simply remarkable. Pay no attention to the Bartoli nay-sayers, she is a first rate singer.

5 out of 5 stars Sometimes hindsight is rewarding.......2007-07-15

Just purchased "Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi" after having seen them live and purchasing "Let's Get Out Of This Country" and am elated that I did. Usually, I "discover" a band from its inception, yet Camera slipped under my radar. This cd is fantastic from start to finish. The songwriting is clever and erudite and the music a perfect complement to Tracyanne's voice. I highly recommend this or "Let's Get Out..." as a starting point to enjoy catchy but complex pop.

5 out of 5 stars Good for your heart.......2006-07-06

This sounds like your going back to the times when life was laid back, happy and care free. . . somewhere outside the polluted city. . . amongst the trees, green grasses, birds, sea, blue skies . . . . . nature at its finest. . . how life was so simple then . . its the sound of this album. . .

2 out of 5 stars Less restraint , more feeling.......2006-05-12

2 1/2 stars

For the most part many of these songs demonstrate the colder, more distant aspects of pop songwriting, however warm the "vibe" would have us believe, with their autopilot musicality and predictable tunes. On the few songs that do feel more inspired then the generic majority, it is definately possible to see future pop majesty this band is capable of achieving, albiet it in a watered down farmiliar way to anyone who has ever picked up an older Belle and Sebastian album, whose shadow will hopefully prove underwhelming on future releases.

4 out of 5 stars A fine debut..........2005-09-30

As with most people, I bought this album after enjoying their sophomore release ("Underachievers Please Try Harder") tremendously, and found this to be at least as good, and in some ways, better.

This album is a lot less pretentious, a bit more tuneful, and lacks the filler of "Underachievers..." For all those who cry wolf at any similarites between this band and Belle & Sebastian, sit and spin. I think B&S would sell their souls to make anything this vital again.

"Eighties Fan" is a nice homage to The Jesus And Mary Chain, with it's "Just Like Honey" drum intro, while "Happy New Year" kicks the album off like no other pop song could (or has, in recent memory). My personal fave has to be "Pen And Notebook", with brilliantly simplistic lyrics, and a pristine, very spare production that can't be touched.

5 out of 5 stars great album.......2005-07-06

If you have "Underachievers Please Try Harder"--because it enjoyed a wider release, many people get this album first--then you'll find much to love on "Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi." Much of the same breathy, mellow melodies from "Underachievers" are here, but so are more intricate songs with inventive rhythms and textures. This is a solid album; I count it as one of my favorites.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A bit disappointed!.......2006-09-02

Just wanted to say for the most part this is a great collection. I was hoping this had the complete version of "Jump" with the great guitar solo for the last half of the song. Needless to say it is just the single version. It's not like they had a full disc of music with the complete disc only coming in at about 59 minutes. Add the whole version on to it!!!

3 out of 5 stars Not as exceiting as the original LP.......2006-07-06

You know listening to this collection of Aztec Camera I noticed that something important was missing - snap. Most of the songs are pretty mellow and sadly this version of Van Halen's 'Jump' is the abridged version, they cut out the best part! Oh well at least the Mick Jones of The Clash/Big Audio Dynamite track made it on to the CD.

4 out of 5 stars Jump gets cut.......2006-05-15

The original version of Van Halen's Jump was a hoot because Roddy sings the words so sincerely -- in all their stupidity and vapidity -- then he out-"Van Halen's" Mr. Van Halen's guitar version with wicked, virtuoso guitar riffs. The version on the Best of leaves off the instrumental part. For shame!

4 out of 5 stars Aztec Camera--the Great Forgotten Pop Band of the 80s.......2003-10-31

I heard Aztec Camera for the first time during the summer of 1985 when a local alternative radio station played the single "All I Need is Everything" occasionally over a period of a few weeks. I instantly fell in love with the song's infectious melody and breezy sensibility. For me, it perfectly captured the carefree optimism of summer. I thought that surely I'd be hearing a lot from this band in the future. Sadly, I was wrong.

Aztec Camera never really caught on in the United States. Finding their music in record stores was difficult, and rarely was their music ever played on the radio. After listening to The Best of Aztec Camera, I still remain mystified as to why the band never found an American audience because they delivered some of the most insanely tuneful and pitch-perfect pop songs of the 1980s. Roddy Frame, the band's song writer and lead singer, had impeccable pop instincts and was a stellar guitar player to boot. Aztec Camera deserves wider recognition, and if you don't believe me, listen to The Best of Aztec Camera for yourself.

In addition to "All I Need is Everything," the album contains delightful gems like "Oblivious," "Walk Out to Winter," and "Pillar to Post." Plus, you get the hilariously low-key re-make of Van Halen's "Jump." There are a few notable omissions. (How could they not include "Still on Fire"?) And I'm not particularly fond of some of Roddy Frame's excursions into blue-eyed soul. However, on the whole, this is a solid set of songs from a vastly under-recognized and underappreciated band. Do yourself a favor and get the album. It is superior pop music.

5 out of 5 stars Roddy Frame rules the known universe.......1999-08-12

With a maximum of 1,000 words -- and knowing that most Amazon.commies read far fewer of each review -- I won't spend the many lines and lines I'd like to in raving about the many geniuses of Roddy Frame. You can always ask my sister -- she'd tell you what I'd say.

I was compelled to write this review, though, having just purchased this latest greatest hits collection (two others, in the past, have been available as bootlegs -- I think they were promotional hoo-hahs of some sort or another), and wanting to assure potential buyers of three things:

1. You must buy this CD. If you know Aztec Camera, you know why. If you don't know Aztec Camera -- sheesh! -- you should.

2. If you don't know Aztec Camera, this is a great introduction, though there are many lamented absences ("Mattress of Wire," "Stray," "The Boy Wonders" and "Still on Fire" come to mind, any one of which I would have gladly traded for "The Crying Scene").

3. This should not be the only Aztec Camera album you purchase. You should get the full effect (not just the singles) of (AT LEAST) High Land, Hard Rain; Knife; and Dreamland. Not everything is in print, but if you prowl Amazon and your local record shop (both indies and chains -- my local Tower evidently has an import buyer with a thing for Aztec Camera, because I can always find something) you'll be able to piece together the collection you should have been building all along.

I'll stop now, but not before imploring you to ignore all those who say that the "Love" album sucks ('shallow lyrics, whine whine, blah blah' -- crud! Roddy with slick production and semi-fraudulent soul is STILL Roddy) or that "Stray" sucks ('what happened to the pop whine, whine blah blah' -- crud! all crud! 'Stray' is sigh-inducingly beautiful) and to discover Roddy for yourself. Now! You'll be glad you did.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Slow, tuneless, boring........2007-07-13

This, that horrible collection of pop tunes, her prayers and her xmas carols are the Sumi Jo recitals I deliberately did NOT buy. Until the bitter end, I suckered to the reviews, craved some more of that wonderful singing and bought the pop crap and now this. I do not like art songs (except some Mozart), particularly not art songs to a piano accompaniment. If you do (and if you say you do, I'll doubt you), dig in, this is your meat and potatoes. Her voice is beautiful (it always was), the music is not.

5 out of 5 stars Bettered by the real thing.......2007-03-21

I discovered the wonder that is Sumi Jo after I kept remarking to myself "Wow", every-time I played an operatic compilation and this one track came around - same track each time - hers! So, I sought to hear more and bought this CD, for no other reason than it was the only one Tower stocked. Sadly it seems that Sumi Jo is a little slow in receiving her rightful invitation to stand on the main podium. In my opinion, she is about as good as it gets, and certainly has a rightful place alongside the greats of Callas, Horne, Hendricks et al.
Well, what can I say, I love this CD, her voice is fluid and elegant, sharp but not cutting, well formed and with a force that can be projected or held, it's a wonderful CD on so many levels and one I have never grown tired of listening to each morning, what a great way to start the day! As an introduction to operatic arias I would certainly recommend this as I am sure it would surprise and enchant even the most hardened of sceptics who think that "Opera is not for me", or that there was no life after Callas.
This afternoon I was very fortunate to have 5th row seats at her spring recital, here in Japan, and what a truly awe-inspiring performance. A genuine world-class soprano Sumi Jo certainly is. Today's repertoire ran from Handel, Vivaldi, Benedict, Strauss, Bellini to Verdi. Singing comfortably in FOUR languages she delivered a performance that the CD in now way prepared me for. A performance that brought her four encores, numerous standing ovations and thunderous applause from a usually reserved (Japanese) audience. Besides her obvious musical talents I have to say that I found her to be such a marvellously warm and appreciative human being who was genuinely appreciative of her audience and I can't wait to get out there and listen to more of the joy that is Sumi Jo.

4 out of 5 stars Sumi Jo tackles Belcanto.......2006-11-03

Coloratura soprano Sumi Jo delivers another delightful album, focusing on arias and pieces from the Italian chamber music composers (Giordani, Bellini, Rosa, Caldara, Cesti, etc.). While I believe Sumi Jo is better-suited to the French composers (see her album "Les Bijoux" on the Erato label), she proves her mettle here by delving wholeheartedly into a section of opera which a lot of sopranos do find quite difficult, the belcanto pieces are an artform in themselves.

In particular, her readings of "Star vicino" (Rosa), "Alma del core" (Caldara), and "Intorno all'idol mio" (Cesti) are chill-inducing. Supported by Vincenzo Scalera on the piano, the feather-light voice of Sumi Jo glides through these pieces with enviable skill. A beautifully-presented album.

5 out of 5 stars A promise fulfilled.......2004-10-28

This collection of famous Italian arias is in my opinion one of the greatest recordings of the decade. Jo finds a new style and colour for each song, be it hauntingly romantic or elegant, poised baroque. One of the most beautiful voices today. Do not miss this at all costs!

4 out of 5 stars Loverly voice, perfect technique.......2003-04-04

I noticed her voice a couple of years ago on TBS TV station live concert in Korean. The applause for her was like thouder storm, and since then I remembered her forever.

There is no doubt about her voice and technique, which is one of the best among her peers today. But even in her best reviewed CDs and live performances, I always felt there is a little regret, which is the lack of passion. Behind her crystallike and gentle voice, I found the music is second to the technical showoff, or maybe I should say she is so perfect techincally that the music content was overshadowed. While, from another perspective, all her CDs can be perfect text books for students.
