Not content with the simplistic "crossover" formula, superstar tenor Andrea Bocelli has been pursuing alternative paths since he emerged as a vocal phenomenon in the mid-1990s: operatic classics and contemporary popular song. The singer's last few albums have showcased his love for the former (including homages to his beloved Verdi: the Requiem and Verdi aria collection). But Cieli di Toscana ("Tuscan Skies") marks a triumphant return to the pop idiom last explored on Sogno, offering a highly varied series of the kind of beautifully crafted contemporary melodies that initially won Bocelli acclaim.

The familiar cast of songwriter-collaborators (including Francesco Sartori, responsible for the smash success "Time to Say Goodbye") mixes with new blood; Bocelli himself unveils his songwriting talents on "Il Diavolo e l'Angelo." It's a highly produced affair, but behind all the gloss, Bocelli sings with a newfound, relaxed, even mellow quality. There are intimately touching moments--"L'Incontro," a tribute to his first son featuring Bocelli's own poetry as read by U2's Bono--as well as soaring flights of lyricism (the duet "L'Abitudine" with Italian singer Helena). And on "Mascagni," with its quotes from that composer's operas, Bocelli makes another nod to his classical affinities. But whatever the style, Bocelli is a singer who knows how to go straight to his listeners' hearts. --Sarah Chin

Just what it says. See my other Andrea Bocelli reviews to get the idea I really like this guy.

5 out of 5 stars Emotional therapy!.......2007-05-14

"He is all heart; there's no pretense. You can feel it." No kidding. These were my mom's last comments about Bocelli two months before she left earthly existence.

This album helped me process a lot of emotional residue affiliated with the strain of difficult dynamics between my mom and myself.

Don't get me wrong. The music isn't sad; it's pure heart and emotion, so it may evoke emotions. The last cut, "L'Ultimo Re" is gorgeous with the way his voice soars!

5 out of 5 stars Great music!.......2006-12-18

I bought the album before listening to any of the songs, because i'm a Bocelli fan. I was not disappointed. Wonderful melodies, beautiful voice. My personal favourites are Melodramma, Chiara and Resta Qui, but this is a great cd overall.

5 out of 5 stars Cieli di Toscana.......2006-08-25

There is no other voice quite like Andrea's voice. I keep listening to this CD over and over as some of the songs just touch my heart, both with his voice and the written arrangements. One of my very favorites from Andrea. He has the same qualities to his voice with popular songs as he does with opera. When following the English translations in the CD case, the message of each song becomes very clear through the inflections and tonal quality of his voice.

5 out of 5 stars Lively and beautiful chamber music.......2006-07-03

An Austrian friend played this for me and I was knocked out by it. This is some of the most beautifully played small ensemble music you're likely to run across. They are playing on period baroque instruments, but the sound is full, crisp, and detailed. The harpsichord neither woefully underrecorded nor overly dominant. Corelli's music is in the same Italian Baroque vein as Scarlatti and Vivaldi. However, you may be less familiar with the pieces on this disc, and that can be a distinct advantage. Finally, it's ONLY $6.98! The best $7 you'll ever spend.

5 out of 5 stars Yay!.......2000-11-03

I'm so glad to see this become available on Amazon.com, finally. If you only buy one CD of baroque violin sonatas then let this be the one. Corelli was a master of the instrument and this is an incredibly important document. Not merely a dry treatise on violin technique, these works abound with beauty and feeling, virtuosity and craftsmanship. Banchini and her cohorts (Jesper Christensen, Luciano Contini, and Kathi Gohl) do a marvelous job with Op. 5. Banchini is a master of baroque fiddle technique and displays great sense and precision in her performance. The group performs on period instruments, which may or may not be a positive to some people. Rest assured: this is a great, great recording and you will not be disappointed. If you have not heard Banchini before than this is a good time to find out what you've been missing. And for only $10! The five-star rating isn't an exaggeration. They don't come much better than this.

Even though she only co-writes a few songs per album, Norah Jones's success seems to have re-energized the women's singer-songwriter scene, and this isn't bad thing--there's a lot of great talent out there getting support because of Jones. Italian songwriter Chiara Civello is one of them. Her breathy but versatile voice allows her to do a convincing French café version of Suzanne Vega's "Caramel," a wispy torch ballad "Parole Incerte" (one of three songs sung in Italian), or do a dancing version of the bossa nova tune "Outono." Working through a dozen songs, Civello is supported by an acoustic-based band composed of studio ace Steve Gadd on drums, keyboardist Larry Goldings and a handful of jazz and Latin jazz players. More impressively, she co-wrote "Trouble" with the legendary Burt Bacharach. An auspicious debut from a singer that seems to have already charmed musicians, labels and musical legends, Last Quarter Moon is the tasteful work of a singer-songwriter with global perspective. -- Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars Bravo ...Bravo.......2006-06-11

I first became aware of Chiara Civello when I listened to her sing Marvin Gaye's "I Want You" on Jason Miles' "What's Going On" CD. I can not tell you how many times I just played that song over and over and over again.

Chiara Civello's genius is her ability to put all her heart and soul into a song.

5 out of 5 stars Great new talent and cd and great in person.......2005-07-17

This is an impressive debut record. It is very well and carefully made and very thoughtful and I like it more I listen to it. I would recommend it to anyone. I don't like comparisons like those made above in other reviews, but to answer I think she has more talent than Norah Jones, and although probably not quite as accomplished a pianist as Krall, has a lot more going on vocally, particularly when she sings in languages that are more natural for her. Also recently saw her at the Rochester Jazz Festival. She is very talented and highly charismatic. She sings even better in Italian and Portugese than in English. There she did a few covers of others' tunes, such as Joni Mitchell's and also did very well with those. I hope she keeps a strong jazz and brazilian influence. That is absolutely her strong suit, and I think that will be her ticket to stand out. She is very naturally musical as a singer/writer. If the record companies can resist the temptation for too much immediate hype/fad and keep focused on her as a talented musician and singer who can communicate emotionally very well, she will go very far on an international level for the long haul.

5 out of 5 stars A developing talent.......2005-03-25

Chiara has a very pleasant and beautiful voice. However, if this review were based only on her voice, I'd probably give her 4 stars. The fifth star is for her songwriting and song selection, which along with her smooth, pleasant voice far surpasses the current crop of superstar female nursery rhyme performers with their mechanical, childish melodies and canned music.
Chiara's music has substance. It's organic. On listening to it, one hears talent--real people with real instruments. There is a sophistication and musical charm that can only be achieved by a talented singer/musician... which Chiara Civello is. I look forward to her next works.

3 out of 5 stars A "Come Away With Me" wannabe.......2005-03-13

My attention to this album was drawn by the yellow sticker on the plastic, covering the c.d. case:

A STUNNING DEBUT FROM POP/JAZZ SINGER-SONGWRITER CHIARA CIVELLO:

"This record is haunting and she's fantastic. It really doesn't matter what she's singing about because her voice just captivates you. And 'The Wrong Goodbye'-HOLY COW-did she write that?"-Cindy Lauper

"This record is delicious. Chiara is potentially a huge singer-songwriter star...."-Burt Bacharach.

"...The best jazz singer of her generation."-Tony Bennett

With hype like that, I was intrigued. Is it worth all of that?

In a word, hellno.

Don't get me wrong; this is good. Chiara Civello has a strong, pleasant voice. Best jazz singer of her generation, though? Depends on how you define the word "generation", but I wouldn't say that right now she's as good as Norah Jones, Jane Monheit or Peter Cincotti, and all of them would have to be in the same generation. Her voice occasionally cuts out in her upper register, and she doesn't yet have the vibrancy in her lower register that "the best of her generation" should have. Fantastic songwriter? I'd give that label to Lorraine Feather or Rene Marie; but not to Ms. Civello, at least not at this time.

On this album, I'm partial to the tunes done in her native Italian, particularly "Ora" and "In Questi Giorni". And the arrangements are very nice, especially Suzanne Vega's "Caramel."

But ultimately, this album really reminds me of Norah Jones' "Come Away With Me." For this kind of hype, and with Verve's p.r. abilities, it ought to sell a bunch; and like Ms. Jones, Ms. Civello appears to have physical charisma. But both albums are well-done and pleasant, but ultimately fluffy. They both have been relegated to the "gone and almost forgotten" side of my c.d. carousel.

However, I will say that Chiara Civello has talent. She could become a superstar. I just hope that that happens based on developed talent, rather than on hype. RC

5 out of 5 stars A Star Is Born.......2005-02-10

Chiara Civello is a new musical force to be reckoned with and her debut CD is a must have for those who want to get on this bandwagon early. Though some reviewers want to compare her to others, the wondrous thing about Chiara is that her voice and her talents are unique. Her songs, most of which she's written herself, are a beautiful mix of jazz and pop with an international flavor that demands serious attention. Her voice is strong, beautiful and her styling lyrical and unpretentious. I have been lucky enough to see her perform in small clubs a couple of times and she is dynamite in person! The best part is that she is only just getting started and you sense that the best is yet to come. Don't miss this CD!

Among opera singers there is often a role associasted with a singer (for example, Callas/Tosca, Bastianini/Carlo Gerard, Gobi/Scarpia)..But in time others attempt the same role with various degrees of success, and sometimes even unseat the front runner!...Not so with Carlo Buti...there will never be another popular song interpreter like him, who has been imitated but never equaled. Every song in this collection - some of which are very hard to find - is recommended 100% by one who has heard him in person as well as in recordings. Bravo Buti, Bravissimo!

This is a very well played selection from the Sammartini brothers' music with a nice contrast in alternating between Guiseppe's deft concertos and Giovanni's more delicate sinfonias. Ensemble 415 give a gutsy satisfying perfomance. This is the best disc I know of from the HM Music D'Abord series.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful music expertly performed.......2001-06-20

These six sonatas must be considered to be the high water-mark of baroque trio sonatas (much as Bach's Brandenburg concerti are the pinnacle of the concerto grosso), and are given a nearly flawless performance by this ad hoc ensemble. I first heard of Zelenka when I caught the second sonata being played on the radio and was completely overwhelmed by his contrapuntal skill. The moment in the first Allegro when the second theme is joined by the first remains one of my most memorable musical epiphanys. Each sonata here is equally splendid and are very rewarding for the active listener. The reading given by Ponseele, Dombrecht, et al is admirable in every way. Given that two of the works were recorded some six years before the others, there is no noticable difference between them. The fact that the same ensemble was used for each session undoubtably helps. The oboists aquit themselves with confidence, and are generally very secure. The bassoon part is surely one of the most demanding in the entire repetoire, and Danny Bond never falters (even in the thrilling fifth sonata). The only fault I could name are a couple of obvious edits. This is music that deserves to be famous and well known.

Amazon.com essential recording

The madrigals in this book, aptly titled by Monteverdi "Madrigals of War and Love," range from solo voice or duo with continuo to works for eight singers and strings. Concerto Italiano gives a magnificent performance: the opening of "Hor che'l ciel" is daringly slow and still, only to give way suddenly to the narrator's cries of torment; "Ardo, avvampo" proceeds from the thrilling chaos of fire alarms to an extraordinary hush as two tenors end the piece in unison. In the famous "Lamento della ninfa," the musicians have found a way to follow Monteverdi's instructions that the three men should sing in strict tempo ("following the hand"), while the solo soprano nymph sings her lament in freer time, "following the heart." The result is astonishing. --Matthew Westphal

5 out of 5 stars Meraviglioso.......2007-07-12

This is Itaian music at its best, Giuseppe Di Steffano has a warm rich voice to take you right to the heart of Italy.
It is worth buying for one track alone, (which I did) Parlami d'amore Mariu. But what a bonus when all the other tracks are just as good. Be prepared to be serenaded.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Vivaldi Liturgical Music.......2007-06-08

This relatively short CD (52 minutes) actually has five different works, four short pieces before we get the title Mass of 9 movements. The music is simply divine, and remarkably modern sounding, although to my ear this is probably because it bears a strong resemblence to the opening of Procol Harum's song 'A Salty Dog'. This is not surprising, because PH songwriters Brooker and Reid were often known to crib some tunes from the classics. A thoroughly enjoyable disc all the way around.

5 out of 5 stars The best Vivaldi Stabat Mater currently available.......2007-03-20

I write this review some years after first hearing this recording and after hearing a number of more recent recordings by other countertenors.

I was brought up on the James Bowman / Academy of Ancient Music recording made in the 1970s under the direction of Christopher Hogwood. That recording is still my lifelong favourite. However, it is clear to me that Andreas Scholl has presented us with probably the best Vivaldi "Stabat Mater" recording to date. I like Robin Blaze's recording very much and Michael Chance has also recorded a very satisfying "Stabat Mater". I listened to David Daniels' recording on headphones in a shop and it was patently obvious to me that his recording was ridden with vibrato and he seemed unable to get away from a frankly operatic approach to this great work. I tolerate David Daniels' vibrato in Baroque operatic music, only because he has such a great voice, but he was out of his depth in this piece of sacred music.

Andreas Scholl's voice is very smooth and his range is well integrated. His timbre, at the time of recording this work, resembled that of his teacher, René Jacobs - sort of like a Rolls Royce version René Jacobs' voice without the peculiarities, occasional "uglinesses" and "ungainlinesses" of that voice. Scholl's voice is probably a perfect countertenor voice - rich, distinctive, powerful and expressive. Andreas Scholl's experience in singing 17th and 18th century sacred music is far greater than any of his peers, save, perhaps, Michael Chance or Robin Blaze.

This entire disc is exceptionally good. The cantata shows how Herr Scholl can negotiate with ease the most florid music with ease and style.

I had the great pleasure of seeing and hearing Andreas Scholl sing the Stabat Mater and other works of Vivaldi in the Adelaide Town Hall several years ago. It was a marvellous experience and I can report that Herr Scholl has a big voice and very powerful ability to mesmerise an audience through his deep, expressive and intelligent interpretations of the music he sings. Only James Bowman's singing of the same music in the same venue in 1975 was as potent and moving for me in my memories.

5 out of 5 stars Fireworks and sacred pathos.......2000-10-09

Almost everything Ensemble 415 records is worth buying. With Andreas Scholl as soloist, this must be the star in their crown to date.

The secular cantata Cessate, omai Cessate is a real bonus. It's said to be "popluar" although personally I cannot remember having seen it advertised in live performance, ever. It's a flashy show-off piece for countertenor, and Andreas Scholl has plenty to show off. You won't hear vocal fireworks like this very often. First time hearing it will take your breath away ... make your hair stand on end.

The intro to the Stabat Mater - in full, not abbreviated as in some recordings - is the sacred mood music Filae Maestae Jerusalem. This piece brings the house down whenever it is performed live, too rarely, and Scholl gives it incredible depth. The steady, ominous rhythm is fabulously rendered by Chiara Banchini.

The Stabat Mater itself continually builds and falls away again as the insights of the writer of the original poem are successively laid before us. Andreas Scholl gives each stanza its own full impact but never loses the flow of the narrative. The last sections, in which the witness (of the Mother's agony at her Son's execution) turns from spectator to pray-er, are a miracle of sensitivity and expression. Andreas Scholl is a master.

5 out of 5 stars A Vivaldi to nourish the soul.........2000-06-10

This is without doubt an amazing dics!

Vivaldi's setting of the Stabat Mater is simple yet profoundly moving and life enriching.. personally, I found it touched me more than Pergolesi's beautiful version. Coupled with a secular cantata (Cessate omai cessate), and several other instrumental works, it is not hard to see why Vivaldi's music has stood the test of time.

Scholl by far, has proven himself a true and most gifted artist. With a honey-toned voice, he weaves for us a delightful canvas of sound (notably in the arias of 'Cessate' track 5 and 7 and the Stabat Mater), and the ease of his vocal techniques and abilities is quite remarkable.

The only other Stabat Mater I own is the Kowalski/Negri on Philips, and I have yet to hear the Chance/Pinnock on DG. But comparing the Scholl and Kowalski, one finds that Scholl takes the opportunity to stroll and allow the words to 'breathe', thus making it more meaningful and reflective, most notably in the adagio "Quis non posset" of the Stabat Mater. Listening to this, it is hard to argue that this is music of aching beauty and it never fails to touch the soul.

The accompaniment of Banchini & Ensemble 415 is flawless and forms a very intimate partnership with Scholl. It's good that they are given the chance to shine in the string works.

All in all, this disc is an amazing achievement and quite deservedly winner of the Gramaphone Baroque Vocal Award for 1996.

Happy Listening!

5 out of 5 stars Revelatory.......1999-11-27

The critics are right: this recording is remarkable. This CD has won a Gramophone award, 4f Telerama, 10 Repertoire, and a Diapason d'Or. It has also made the list of the 50 Best Baroque Recordings (BBC Music). Listen: I'm not even a particular fan of Andreas Scholl, but this is one of my most favorite recordings (in a collection that numbers almost 1,000 CD's). Scholl is uniquely suited to the repertory such as this. His angelic voice may not always rise to the occasion in opera (although his performance in Solomon certainly challenges this assumption), but that same angelic voice is always at home in sacred music - blending calm reverence with a hint of emotion, in a manner that is both beautiful and heart-breaking. Listen to his Stabat Mater to know what I mean. Scholl's voice is also quite at home in the secular cantata Cessate Omai Cessate, a cry of unrequited love, albeit more elegaic than passionate. At the surface, this recording, featuring some of the world's most beautiful melodies, is an easy listening (is there a melody more ravishing than Larghetto from Cessate?). But the listening is also revelatory and rewarding because it leads to new layers of meaning and expression on each new listen. gkolomietz@yahoo.com

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great CD! DVD is for EUROPE (Region 2).......2005-12-13

The CD is great, updating some songs with a more polished feel, such as Bella, Ci Chiamano Bambine, and Per Te. There are two new songs, A Modo Mio (in two forms) and Fatalita. Fatalita is a nice dance piece, where A Modo Mio is more a ballad. Good, but included more for being new than being a 'Greatest Hit' (I would have put in Sensa Confine (Blu) and Cosa Vuoi! (Giornata Storica) as better candidates for 'Greatest Hits').

The 'bonus' Megamix is 12 minutes that is like a sampler of their best known dance songs.

The DVD is for Region 2, which means you can only switch your DVD back and forth 4 times before it's locked to the last Region you choose. It's a pity there's not a way to get a Region 1 version.

Still, the CD is more than worth the wait! And I know I'll use at least 2 of the 4 Region changes just to watch the DVD.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive P&C Collection.......2005-03-24

With their 'Greatest Hits' package, Paola and Chiara Iezzi have managed to put together a stunning representation of their growth over the last ten years. From 90's pop such as 'Ci Chiamano Bambine' to brand new songs such as the stunning 'A Modo Mio' and 'Fatalita', this CD covers all their great albums, with exclusive and hard-to-find remixes of favorite songs such as 'Viva el Amor!', and 'Fino Alla Fine'.

What makes this package truly great though is the inclusion of the DVD. 19 of their best music videos, including two uncensored versions of the controversial 'Kamasutra' promo. Stunning picture quality, and perfect sound combine to create over an hour of pure Paola and Chiara magic.

This collection is an absolute must for any P&C fan. The DVD is worth the price alone. You won't be disappointed!
