Great Disc, Even after the years.......2006-12-03
This is an excelent material, even tough it's been almost 9 years since it was released, it still has very good sounds no mention that now it also has a nostalgic sense. So, i purchased another one 'cause my old disc, no one knows what happenned to it.
The last of old school Spanish pop ?.......2000-06-15
This album has alot of great songs. Most of the are just fun, and then you have your hits, like "mirame a los ojos" and "aunque muera por ti" witch really shine. But the current pop scene has left these songs behind with more digital sounds, but this is still a great album that will make you happy and bob your head a bit.
Very danceable and upbeat!/!Tu bailas para simpre!.......1999-11-03
You don't have to be a native Spanish speaker to have fun dancing and listening to this album's fun and danceable rock tunes and disco tunes. I really like "Un Pie Tras Otro Pie." Good album.
Este disco es muy bueno! Tu bailas y tienes muy feliz! Me gusto mucho!

Mediterranean Music.......2006-11-03
An exquisite collection of songs from the countries surrounding the Mediterranean, the White Sea, in original languauges. S Yanatou has an angelic voice. Strongly recommended.
Comment on "Gemçis Güzel Günerli" and more.......2005-05-01
First off, this is the best Savina Yannatou CD I've heard to date -- her voice is in terrific form here. (Though you'll get to hear a lot more of the band on her latest release, Sumiglia.)
Second, track 11 ("Gemçis Güzel Günerli") *is* a Turkish song, written by an Aremenian citizen of Turkey, Hrant Kenkulian, or "Udi Hrant," as he's often known -- this is mentioned in the liner notes to Mediterranea. ("Udi" is an honorific prefix meaning that he was a master player of the ud, a Middle Eastern lute.) If you're interested in exploring his music further, there are several recordings of his work (voice, ud, and violin) on the Traditional Crossroads label. (Type "Udi Hrant" into the search engine on this site and you'll find the CDs very easily.)
Turkey was -- and still is -- an ethnically mixed country, which is a legacy of the Ottoman Empire. There were Armenian Turkish composers and musicians at the courts of the Ottoman sultans, and there were those who also excelled at light classical and popular song. Hrant Kenkulian was a master of classical and popular music -- if you explore further, you'll find out that he's one of many 20th-century Armenians who were involved in the development of Turkish music.
Yannatou is an inheritor of Turkish tradition, too. Modern Greece was occupied by the Ottomans for many centuries, and there is a very strong Turkish tinge to much of the Greek music she performs. (And vice versa, as she performs Pontic Greek music from the Black Sea coast of Turkey; also songs from Smyrna -- now called Izmir -- on Turkey's western coast.)
What I love most about her work is her peerless way with all of the songs she chooses. Many people have tried to come up with pan-Mediterranean discs, but Yannatou is one of a handful of people who has succeeded at it.
Gecmis Guzel Gunleri is actually Armenian.......2004-09-22
My professional background is in ethnomusicology. I am not Greek, Turkish or Armenia so I have no axe to grind. One reviewer below, apparently of Turkish background, seems to take offense that Gecmis Guzel Gunleri is not listed as "Turkish Traditional." there is a simple reason for that, it isn't orignially a Turkish song. It is a well known Armenian song, with the same melody for hundred of years. Indeed this rendition is in Turkish, but to call it "Turkish traditional" would be innacurate.
Inded it belongs to, adn illustrates, a whole body of non Turkish music from Turkey which actually speaks to the ethnic cleansing that occured the in the 1900-1920's period.
Few people in today's Turkey, which has been purged of knowledge of the roots of its own tradional music, are aware of the multiethnic roots of its music. It was for years criminal to even suggest that many songs were orignially Greek, Kurdish or Armenian.
So I am glad that my Turkish friend likes the Armenian ballad Gecmis Guzel Gunleri ("The Beautiful Past Days") and am only sorry that he never heard the original recordings by an long dead artist now know in Turkey as Udi Hrant, but whose non stage name was Udi Hrant Kenkulian. His family was murdered in the Turkish Genocide against the Armenians, which makes his song more ever poignant - as the title suggests..
The Meditarranean Soul Captured in One CD!.......2002-04-02
Savina Yannatou has an indescribable soprano voice which captures the sounds and emotions of the Meditarranean people whether Italian, Greek, French (Corsica), Hebrew or Turkish (I may have missed a country or two present on the CD). The wedding song from the Greek island of Kalymnos and the Turkish "aman" song are my favorites. All the songs are so beautifully sung, it is hard to say that one is better than another ... I have heard these two songs before and am familiar with how they should sound: her singing is traditonal with a tenderness and sincerity that is a uniquely her own. Savina's voice is ethereal and "other worldly" - totally living up to her name, after a saint from the Meditarranean, Italy, I think.
I first heard Savina Yannatou on Mondo Greece and knew I must have one of her CDs. I discovered this one and was compelled to buy it. It is filled with the music of Primavera de Salonika, playing kanun, santouri, lyra, and other authentic intstruments that complement Savina's voice. Her voice is beyond description ... totally captivating, exceptional, without comparison. Listen and be amazed - then buy the CD!!! Erika Borsos (erikab93)

Tango at its best.......2001-01-26
Sexteto Mayor has moved the old tango to today's music values, without loosing the essence of the tango, the 2x4 rythm. It combines then two things, highly professionally executed music with the virtues of the Argentine tango. A perfect combination. Even if you are not a tango fan, you should not miss this one. This CDs reflects a performance that has today over 500 presentations around the globe, from China to Albulquerque, from Turkey to San Diego, and has performed in the best theatres and music center around the world. Do not miss it.
Mixed emotions.......2000-07-20
I admit it, when it comes to tango, I tend to be a purist. Therefore, I still have a hard time accepting many of the latest "fusion" trends such as certain songs found in this CD which are not real tangos [e.g. "Ojos negros" a traditional Russian song, played in a tango tune] as well as the "bilingual" versions of some traditional tangos (sung with a pathetic accent, reminiscent of the early days of Julio Iglesias, I might add!)] The orchestra however, sounds wonderful, exceptionally balanced and very assertive.
Impressive collection. A MUST have........1999-10-31
Sexteto Mayor has been known for years in Argentina as being some of the best in tango interpreting and playing. This production meets all expections. This is Argentinian Tango at its best. Great examples were chosen for this CD, I buy it often to give to friends that want to know about my Argentinian origins.
Fabulous!.......1999-06-04
Sexteto Mayor is a MUST HAVE in every tango lover's collection. This is authentic Argentinian tango at its best!

This is the most beautifully sung Il Trovatore on record, but is by no means the most dramatic and is far from the best-conducted. Those who insist on stereo sound (which has substantial advantages for opera recordings in terms of dramatic presence and impact) may opt for the Zubin Mehta or James Levine treatments. But Jussi Bjoerling and Leonard Warren respond intensely to the score theatrically and, above all, musically, Zinka Milanov sings with a haunting beauty most of the time, Fedora Barbieri approaches the role of the Gypsy woman Azucena as if she were born to sing it, and the relatively small, well-disciplined chorus sings with a clarity and precision comparable to that of Levine's powerful Metropolitan Opera Chorus. --Joe McLellan
Customer Reviews:
Still the Best.......2005-03-25
Despite shortcomings, such as mediocre conducting, cuts and the "old" sound, not least the miscast tenor, this "Trovatore" remains unsurpassed for the beauty of singing. Milanov is simply the best Leonora ever, both in her grand arias and the dramatic coloratura segments. Bjoerling is not heroic enough for my taste. He is perfect for "Ballo," "Faust" and "Manon," but not for "Aida" or "Il Trovatore." But he makes up for the lack of heroic stature with the beauty of voice and singing. If only Milanov could sing this opera with Corelli, what a glorious "Trovatore" that would be!
The best for many years, but now surpassed.......2003-11-04
Most of the reviewers below have covered the majority of good and bad points about this recording, so I will be brief. Beautiful and mostly accurate singing but lacking dramatic credibility from the soprano and tenor; decent conducting but a terrible, thin-sounding orchestra; no sense of "sound-staging," very little drama except from Barbieri and Warren, and a very incomplete version of the score with numerous large and small cuts.
Of competing versions, pride of place goes to the new Ghiorghiu-Alagna set, even though Alagna pushes the voice a little too hard at times and holds the high C in "Di quella pira" well beyond its written length. The 1970 Mehta set has a good Leonora in Price and a decent Manico in Domingo, but Milnes' baritone lacks the proper bite for Di Luna and Cossotto is a joke as Azucena once one has heard Barbieri or Diadkova.
So, basically, we are still waiting for a really great "Trovatore." If you like Milanov and Bjorling, get this set. If you want a good balance between singing, drama and completeness, get the Pappano-Alagna set.
A Classic Trovatore --- but by far not the best!.......2003-01-23
This 1952 set has been acclaimed since its debut, and while it does feature some of the most passionate Italian singing on disc, it is poorly conducted and hopelessly boring. Bjoerling is second-rate (at best), and Cellini never quite captures the dramatic urgency of this gripping work. But the RCA Victor orchestra plays well in spite of it all, and the chorus work is most impressive.
Still, this recording is a must-own for its two leading women, Zinka Milanov and Fedora Barbieri, the latter being indisputably the best Azucena on disc. Zinka Milanov is ideal as Leonora, better than even Antonietta Stella on Serafin's recording; though she doesn't deliver as much intensity as Callas in Herbert von Karajan's inspired performance (who would?), she sings with soaring beauty and smart, focused characterization. The highlight, though, is the exquisite Azucena of Fedora Barbieri, one of the most underrated singers of the 20th century. She is glorious and exciting, bringing some much-needed thrill to this otherwise lackluster performance. She can also be found the aforementioned von Karajan set -- but believe it or not, she's better here.
Here's a summary of great Trovatore recordings: One of the best efforts, in certainly the best sound, is Mehta's 1970 recording with Domingo and Price as the leading roles. It's fantastic, with an all-star cast and superb orchestral work. I've mentioned von Karajan's more than once on this review, and his recording with Callas, di Stefano and Barbieri is a supreme addition to the catalogue. Callas fans should snatch it up without a moment's pause. But don't get it if you want sheer vocal perfection from the leading roles. I guess my No. 1 Recommendation is actually Tullio Serafin's version with Bergonzi as my favorite Manrico of all time. Other cast highlights include Antonietta Stella as a wonderful Leonora and Fiorenza Cossotto as a frightening Azucena. Enjoy!
A REMINDER OF THE WAY OPERA USED TO SOUND!.......2002-08-18
I'm going to make this very short and to-the-point. They simply don't sing like this anymore ----- sopranos and tenors
like Milanov and Bjoerling are an extinct breed, and we are the poorer for it. Ditto for Fedora Barbieri and Leonard Warren ------- two more outstanding singers ---- all of whom could be heard regularly at the Metropolitan Opera in the 1950's. But then again, so were many other great singers. We don't have voices like this today --- and one hearing of this recording of "Trovatore" sadly proves it. Recorded in 1952, it still sounds acceptable --- and no subsequent "Trovatore" has matched it, though the famous 1962 broadcast from Salzburg with Leontyne Price, Franco Corelli, Giulietta Simionato, and Ettore Bastianini, all under the baton of Herbert von Karajan, comes the closest.
Down with the director!!.......2002-06-11
I think this is a nice version from Trovatore, but musicaly, It lacks of intensity and drama coming from Cilario and Bjoreling. I must admit that Milanov, Merril and Barbieri are superb in each of their roles, but I didn't like that much Bjorleing's singing in this opera. With so little power in his "di quella pira". Good but not great!
As for the director I don't understand how they let him direct an orchestra!! he is Owghfull, no strenght. Maybe I'm overreacting with Cillario, but I heard so much better performances of the orchestra than this, an when I come back and listen to this one I get every day more disapointed.
Is a good choice if you think in the singers, but a terrible one if you think in the director.
Listen to Correlli's, Pryce version.

La Onda concert.......2006-02-28
I saw this talented high enery group perform in Feb 2006 at The Fiesta de La Feria in Texas. Kids from 3 to 60 years old just got up and started dancing in the streets of our small city. Those of us who couldn't dance were tapping our feet or just clapping our hands, but every one who heard the music participated. And they play and sing live just as good as what you hear on the CD.
A group of our volunteer firemen had congregated at the side of the stage, and the two girls in the group started flirting with the boys during the songs. The fire fighters faces blushed redder than their fire engines when the attractive girls asked over the loud speakers which of the men were single. It was all in fun.
A little later in the evening the girls in La Onda joined the group Control for a couple of songs. The crowd roared in approval as they listened to best of the best in cumbia music.
La Onda performed songs from the La Fiesta CD. If you want to get into a happy mood, this group will take you there. Be warned that after you listen to this album you will become hooked on La Onda.

A 1979 Grammy Winner..................2002-05-23
The initial offering of Concord Jazz Picante label, most of Cal's Concord releases are among my favorites, a nice mixture of standards and originals.
The combination of excellent Latin percussion in a true jazz setting brings out entirely new aspects of the standards "Speak Low", "Star Eyes, and "I Remember You". These cuts provide a sultry romantic Latin ambiance further enhanced by changes of tempo and sensitive solos by Roger Glenn on flute, Mark Levine on Fender Rhodes and Cal on the vibes.
The faster tracks, "Serengeti", "Mambo Mindoro", "Aleluia" and "Sabor" provide plenty of good Latin beat while showing off the talents of the whole group, collectively and as soloists.
This is good tasteful Latin jazz as its meant to be heard...not just something warmed over with just a conga background

Amazon.com essential recording
Maria Callas's voice was never noted for its sheer beauty, but she was in her best form for this session and she knew exactly what to do with what she had. She might not make the distraught figure of Leonora rationally credible, but she knows more about acting with her voice than anyone this side of Sir John Gielgud. And she puts Leonora's emotions, her vulnerability, her whole-hearted, self-sacrificial love, squarely before the listener. Herbert von Karajan's conducting brings logical coherence to a work not noted for that quality. In short, this is vintage Callas, at the top of her form in some of the greatest music and some of the most intensely emotional situations ever devised for a soprano. Von Karajan--young and not yet burdened with the mannerisms of his later years, is an ideal partner. The other singers, though dwarfed by Callas, provide substantial support. --Joe McLellan
Customer Reviews:
A Leonora For All Time.......2006-04-08
I have always considered the Trovatore Leonora to be one of Callas's very greatest roles. Here , less obscured by her undoubted dramatic gifts, we can enjoy the pure musicality of her singing. The timbre is perfect for Leonora - dark, plangent & (apart form at the very top of her register)surpassingly beautiful. The role displays her perfect legato, incredible breath control & accurate coloratura. She also has a wonderful understanding of just how to phrase a Verdian cadenza, quite different from anything she would do in Bellini or Donizetti. You only have to hear her first few phrases to know that this Leonora is an aristocrat. Leontyne Price is undoubtedly another great Leonora, and she too has a voice perfectly suited to the role, but occasionally she mars the vocal line with unmusical cadenzas, appearing more interested in laying out her voice for admiring display, where Callas is more intent on letting us hear Verdi. The rest of the cast is just about as perfect as was possible at the time & a good deal better than anything we could manage today. True, Di Stefano lacks the requisite weight, but he sings with such face, it is readily forgiven. His "Di quella pira" may not have the heroic heft of a Corelli, but he sings "Ah, si ben mio" quite beautifully. Panerai, Barbieri & Zaccaria could hardly be bettered & Karajan was at this time the perfect conductor for the project. He conducts with great style & dash, while at no time apologising for the occasional vulgarities in the score. More modern recordings are uncut & here we have the cuts traditional at the time, but at least we get one verse of Leonora's cabaletta "tu vedrai". The sound has also been remarkably well freshened up in it's present transfer. Unless you really have to have modern stereo digital sound, buy it. And, even if you have another recording, acquire this as well. You won't regret it!
The greatest Leonora!.......2004-07-02
I couldn't agree more with the reviews stating that Callas' Leonora is unsurpassed. Björling called this Leonora "sheer perfection". Unbeatable!
Brilliant!.......2004-06-13
The dream-team Callas-di Stefano comes together once more to record I'll Trovatore! And how beautifully they did it! Herbert von Karajan's conducting is supreme, Callas sings the definite Leonora, di Stefano sounds passionate and loving as Manrico and Barbieri kicks ass as Azucena. To the guy who said that if Callas had Milanov as a rival she'd fall on her face, Callas and Milanov performed at the same time! So there! The best Trovatore ever!
The best Leonora forever.......2004-05-16
Period! Di Stefano sounds surprisingly on fire as the ill-fated Manrico, Barbieri COMMANDS as Azucena and Panerei is a fabulous di Luna. Von Karajan conducts mastefully. Not the only Trovatore but one of the very best!
Beautiful and amazing.......2004-04-04
This Trovatore has been called a landmark by critics and fans alike. Callas in in exquisite form, di Stefano sounds passionate, ardent and luscious and Panerei is a surprisingly fierce di Luna. Von Karajan conducts this PERFECTLY. Buy this and marvel at a vocal wonder!

Beyond all description..........2006-09-19
As a boy, I heard so many hyperbolic references to the legendary Enrico Caruso that I chose to purchase a remastered copy of his "Greatest Hits" when I first began to acquire recordings as a young man. Soon after, I discovered Pavarotti and my life was changed by his music. Caruso ended up in the Goodwill Store. I am convinced that in 500 years, should the earth cool again and the Muslim hoards abate, the civilized world will still tell tales of the greatest tenor. I have often found myself grumpy when searching for recordings of Pavarotti because of the inconsistent fidelity of the recordings. That search for the definitive Pavarotti recordings, regarding both content and fidelity, has ended with the release of this extraordinary collection. Worth it's weight in gold, the Puccinni Volume (#5) alone is enough to send someone like me into hyperspace. I am astounded by the beauty and power of these performances. I will always remember the day, not long ago, when a NPR commentator glibly mentioned between the weather and the night's playlist the terrible words, "Luciano Pavarotti has announced that he is retiring from Opera." I felt as if something indescribably beautiful was fading from the world. Of course, beauty in all of its earthly forms is fleeting at best, but these discs contain a reflection of it that will surely bolster any soul.
An Absolute Must-Have for Any Pavarotti Fan.......2004-01-09
...and that certainly goes without saying. My one tiny little problem with it is that his recordings of "Santa Lucia" and "Caruso" are not on this incredible box-set. Even though I have those recordings on other CDs, I still think those are very important pieces to include on this set (assuming that this set of Pavi hits would be the only compilation that that any fan of this phenomenal tenor would have). He is probably my biggest idol, and he deserves to have been one of the biggest opera stars in history.
Wonderful!!!!.......2002-11-07
This Pavarotti set; The Pavarotti Edition; is a wonderful collection of Arias and songs that cover Luciano's great career. Pavarotti is THE Voice of the 20th Century and this set does him justice. It includes 10 CDs with over 750 minutes of music; Includes Music from All of His roles; has a beautiful 76 page full color booklet; Has a wonderful write up; and includes a bonus CD of Pavarotti's fist album, a 45, from 1964, which has never been released on CD before this set. Every Song is hear, This SET is a must have for every Pavarotti Fan.
