5 out of 5 stars Correction.......2006-12-13

Now folks, both of what the two other reviewers wrote about the tragical death of Fritz Wunderlich is wrong. Wunderlich died in hospital at September 17 1966. He had broken his skull, when he fell down the stairs in the hunting-house of a friend. Late in the evening of September 16, Wunderlich, as usual when not at home, had phoned his wife in Munich. He was very tired from strolling through the forest the whole day, making out the ideal locations for the hunt, which should start early in the next morning (Wunderlich was a passionate hunter). After he had wished his wife a good night, he went to the staircase in order to go down to his bedroom at the first floor. He still wore his heavy hunting boots - with open shoestrings! As walking downstairs, Wunderlich struggled over the open shoestrings and grabbed for the banisters, which was not more than a rope, fixed to the wall. The banisters teared out, and Wunderlich fell down the whole stairs. Fritz Wunderlich died in hospital the next day. It was only short before his 36'th birthday. An exceptional singing career had come to an untimely end. Some people believe that Wunderlich was drunken at the time of accident. If this is true can't be proven any more. But still this is not what his close friends said, regarding his accident and his death. In my opinion Wunderlich was the last of the really great tenors of the last century. All the tenors which came to fame after him (sorry folks, even such maestros as Pavarotti and Domingo) lack a certain quality in singing. It's the ease of breath flow, or singing on the breath without pushing the voice, it's the overtones, the legato, the mezza voce, the messa di voce and many more things - in short: the overall beauty of the voice through both registers. Wunderlich was the last tenor who had all this. Other examples are Caruso, McCormack, Gigli (despite the sobbing in his later recordings) and of course the wonderful Jussi Björling. But these are only some few names. If you listen for example to the cd's in the box "Famous tenors of the past" you will find that there were many very good and outstanding tenors in the first half of the 20'th century and - as we can only assume - in the time before the invention of the grammophone. Take a close look at todays famous tenors (I know, there are some quite good and promising ones) but what are they in comparison to those tenors (or better to say, to their voices and singing) I just mentioned before?

Please make your own decision.

5 out of 5 stars Fritz Wunderlich can do no wrong...........2006-05-05

... okay, maybe. It's just that I've never heard a recording I didn't love. And I prefer that he sing everything in German even when that means not using original language.

This is a bit strange because I'm most often bugged by Don Carlos and Vepres in Italian (just a personal quirk). Of course, I'm also bugged by dropping the "s" in Don Carlos, which is always incorrect. The man's name IS Carlos whether in Italian or French.

I tried to write Mr. Avila a personal note, but could not, so let me say that Fritz Wunderlich did not die of cancer, but a dreadful accident in Scotland (I'll not go into the whys and wherefores, I just wanted to set PART of the record straight.)

5 out of 5 stars The Wonder of Wunderlich.......2005-11-22

Deutsche Grammophone does it again! This is an extensive 3-cd compilation album featuring the artistry of the great German tenor Fritz Wunderlich in a variety of vocal repertoire - Baroque cantata/oratorio, opera and Lieder. Like the other critic pointed out, I first heard Fritz sinigng a superb Tamino in the Karl Bohm Magic Flute, although I have also heard him sing Lieder opposite the mezzo soprano Christa Ludwig and baritone Dietrich Fischer Dieskau, who were his contemporaries and colleagues. Wunderlich died tragically in 1966 of cancer. He inspired a generation of purely lyric tenors or "tenors di grazie" whose charming voice would never roughen and lack grace. His Germanic style earned him popularity in World War II Europe and he was the leading exponent of Lieder in the 50's. His tenor voice is glorious, as close to a male angel as possible. On this recording, we are treated to sumptuous arias from Bach's Christmas/Easter Oratorios, and movements from 2 cantatas. Also noteworthy are the unsurpassed performances of Mozart tenor heroes- such as Belmonte from "Die Entfuhrung Aus Dem Serail" (Abduction from the Seraglio) and his unbeatable Tamino from Die Zauberflote The Magic Flute. He sings bel canto opera arias fo tenor, from master composers Rossinni, Bellini and Verdi. While I don't much like that he is singing Italian arias in German, one must remember that at this time, in the LP Era of World War II Germany and Austria, German-born opera singers sang Italian opera in German translation/revisions. While many German singers could indeed sing in Italian, they were mostly trained to sing it in German because of excessive national pride and because Germans viewed Italian opera as course and un-melodic. Still, there have been superb German singers who sang in Italian like Wagner diva Birgit Nilsson, baritone Dietrich Fischer Dieskau, tenor Peter Schreier, soprano Edda Moser, baritone Walter Berry, tenor Herman Pretty, all post-Wunderlich sensations. Wunderlich sings Lieder in one CD with great and unrivaled musicianship. Especially impressive are the Viennese pieces. Further to the cd's this album is equipped with photos of Wunderlich and his family and a detailed profile biography.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I could give this release more than 5 stars: it's terrific!!!.......2005-10-28

I knew little about the German tenor Fritz Wunderlich (1930-1966), except reading the accolades given to his recordings and performances by reviewers in "American Record Guide" over the past 13 years. I knew Wunderlich recorded the role of Tamino in the famous DG recording of Mozart's "Die Zauberflote", with Karl Bohm/Berlin Philharmonic (Now on DG Originals CDs), but was not aware of what a wide range of repertoire he had until hearing this release.

This release has a wide variety of Wunderlich's discography, including Bach arias from his Christmas and Easter Oratorios, and movements from 2 cantatas; his Mozart roles in "Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail" (Eugen Jochum/Bavarian Radio Orchestra) and "Die Zauberflote" (Karl Bohm/Berlin Philharmonic); a variety of arias and duets by Rossini, Bellini, Verdi, Richard Strauss, mostly sung in German, and with Hermann Prey, baritone and Erika Koth, soprano in many of the duets; Baroque arias by Handel, from "Xerxes" (including the famous "Ombre mai fu" sung in German) and "Julius Caesar", selections from Monteverdi's "Orfeo" (an early track from 1955 sung in Italian); Schumann's "Dichterliebe", 4 Beethoven Lieder, including "Adelaide" and "Der Kuss"; and 9 Schubert lieder, including "An der Musik," and "Der Musensohn", all with Hubert Giesen, piano; Popular songs such as "Granada" and Viennese songs, with chamber orchestra accompaniment. There are no texts for the songs, but you may have text booklets with other CD releases, so don't really need them when you hear Wunderlich's beautiful voice.

There is a booklet with articles about Wunderlich's career, including a preface by his widow, Eva Wunderlich, photos of Wunderlich as a boy and young man, with his wife Eva in 1965, and children Constanze, Wolfgang, and Barbara. I enjoy reading and looking at the booklet, even apart from listening to the beautiful recordings.

Wunderlich was a genius, and his voice sounds great in every track, mono (some, but not a majority) and stereo (most of the tracks in the 7 discs are stereo) alike. If you love great music, and opera, but like me aren't often of a mind to sit still for 3 hours to listen to one, get this. It's a great release, and reasonably priced to boot. I'm thankful to God for great music, for the ability to hear and feel, and for Fritz Wunderlich and his service to music lovers everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Performances from a Great & Beloved Singer.......2004-01-09

For those of us who grew up on Janet Baker's recordings (and were lucky enough to hear her "live" as well), the sound of her voice and her singular artstic personality - British restraint coupled with fierce emotional and spiritual commitment - are indelibly imprinted in our minds and hearts. The closest current equivalent is Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, another superb artist who has charted her own course, and not surprisingly there is some overlap of repertoire, in the music of J.S. Bach, of course, but also Berlioz's Didon and Beatrice, Handel's Ariodante and Britten's Phaedra (composed for Baker).
This wonderful compilation is complementary to EMI's 2-CD "The Very Best of Janet Baker" -- no overlap of repertoire whatsoever. Unlike that set, which focused on concert repertoire (with orchestra or piano) there's a generous sampling here of Baker's operatic roles including Handel, Mozart, Purcell, Rameau, Gluck, and Britten. Also welcome is "Phaedra," one of Britten's strongest late works. And it's good to have the Berlioz: "Cleopatre" and "Herminie" complete, the big aria from "Beatrice et Benedict." (Why EMI included nothing from her recording of the last 2 scenes of "Les Troyens" is unfathomable.) The wide time-span allows us to hear Baker's voice in all its youthful, "sappy" warmth, as well as in its artistic maturity (though truth to tell she was pretty much a complete artist from the start). There are a few signs of wear in later items, nothing serious, in fact rather less than I remembered. I could have done with fewer of the "Arie Amorose" in favor of more cuts from her Gluck LP, which I believe has never been issued complete on CD, but that's just personal preference. The focus here is entirely on orchestrally accompanied works (or, in the case of the marvelous early disc of Ravel, Chausson & Delage songs, with chamber ensemble) so for Baker the supreme interpreter of English, German and French song you'll need to go elsewhere (the EMI has a fair sampling, especially of her Schubert). But everything here is indispensible.

5 out of 5 stars Stellar Impassioned Contralto in Fine Early Music Program.......2005-06-15

Gender lines become increasingly irrelevant as the current crop of world-class Baroque interpreters stake their territory. Just as David Daniels redefines our expectations of the countertenor voice and what a delicately beautiful sound a man can generate, Sara Mingardo is doing the same for the contralto voice and displaying how powerfully dynamic a woman can sound. This 2004 release is quite an accomplished recording of 17th- and 18th-century arias and cantatas written for women and castrati. An intensely passionate singer especially as she explores a repertoire in her native Italian, Mingardo is anything but pious in her interpretations. Her impressive vocal and theatrical abilities are on full display in the opening, "Hor ch'è tempo di morire", a nine-minute lullaby by Tarquinio Merula, where the sighing, monotonously repetitive accompaniment acts as counterpoint to her expression of Mary's heartfelt sentiment for her son's well-being in both life and inevitable death. Throughout the program, she invokes a broad gamut of emotions and stills stays true to the Baroque fach.

Although the disc is billed with the three most famous composers (Handel, Vivaldi and Monteverdi), I feel her decorous vocal production seems particularly well executed on the beautifully moving works by Carissimi ("Deh, memoria, e che più chiedi") and Legrenzi ("Costei ch'in mezzo al volto scritt'ha il mio cor"), which Mingardo seems to relish and on which she lavishes the full measure of her rich tone. The last section of the Vivaldi cantata, "Piani, sospiri e dimandar mercede" reveals her sharp technique and rhythmic control even more than the preceding Handel cantata, "Lungi da me pensier tiranno", a good but not great early piece from the master. Her duet with Monica Bacelli on the Monteverdi piece, "Se i languidi miei sguardi", provides an interesting contrast of styles as Bacelli provides the pure dulcet tones we tend to think of as typical in Baroque singing. Mingardo's voice may lack the feminine warmth of her alto colleague Stephanie Blythe, but it's still extremely listenable and quite an impressive instrument especially when intertwined with the five players of Concerto Italiano - an ensemble of two violins, a cello, a theorbo and a harpsichord - under the often imaginative musical direction of Rinaldo Alessandrini. This is a superb recording for early music fans.

5 out of 5 stars 'Tears, Sighs and Entreaties'.......2004-08-11

This collection of arias, madrigals and cantatas from the (mostly) Italian baroque features the rich and haunting voice of Sara Mingardo, surely one of the best contraltos currently singing. The texts of most of these works are generally about lost, distant or unrequited love or about death - the 'tears, sighs and entreaties' of Vivaldi's 'Pianti, sospiri e dimandar mercede.' The unrelenting sadness and sighing may be a bit much to digest in one sitting, but taken in manageable bits, this CD is not only moving, but musically satisfying. Mingardo is given, not surprisingly, flexible and empathic support by Rinaldo Alessandrini and his Concerto Italiano.

All but one of the works are by Italians; the exception is Handel's cantata 'Lungi da me pensier tiranno!' ('Leave me, tormenting thought!') which is, of course, set to an Italian text. All the works are effective, but particularly so is one previously unfamiliar to me (and the first selection on the disc), the 9-minute 'Hor ch'e tempo di morire' ('When the time comes to die, sleep, my son, do not cry') by Tarquinio Merula (ca. 1595-1665), a composer previously only a name to me. It is hauntingly set against two rocking minor chords that repeat ceaselessly for most of the length of the 'canzonetta spirituale sopra alla nanna,' a lullaby sung by the Virgin Mary to the Baby Jesus. The effect is hypnotizing.

Equally effective is 'Deh, memoria, e che più chiedi?' ('Say, memory, what more do you want?') by Giacomo Carissimi (1605-1674) which contains some ravishing pianissimo singing by Mingardo. Also included are pieces by Giovanni Salvatore (1600-ca. 1668), Monteverdi ('Vorrei baciarti' [with assistance of mezzo Monica Bacelli] and 'Se i languidi miei cime'), Cavalli, Giovanni Legrenzi (1626-1690), and Handel (the aforementioned 'Pianti, sospiri e dimandar mercede,'). There is an exceedingly interesting booklet essay by Olivier Rouvière on the history of the contralto voice.

Mingardo has recorded a great deal and has appeared all over the world, but seems not to have sung much in the U.S. (Santa Fe Opera and the Boston Symphony). That's a pity; she's a true artist.

    5 out of 5 stars 18th Century Hit Parade.......2006-10-21

'La Stravaganza' Duets and Cantatas by Benedetto Marcello and performed by the group, La Venexiana is a great little discovery for those of us amateurs who happen to have a taste for out of the way music. To the culinary mind, it's sort of like discovering the spice, galangal, which is sort of like ginger, but isn't.

The most charming aspect of the recording is the voices performing the duets. The least charming aspect of the recording is that it sounds as if the recording was done in a very big church sanctuary rather than in a drawing room, where it would most likely be performed. It seems as if this may just be music where a modern approach is better than a simple setting. keep the old instruments, but move it to a modern studio.

    Still well worth the listen.

        Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Galante is not all that.......2002-11-14

I was very disappointed in this CD, especially after reading two 5 star reviews. The musical selections are great, but Galante's vocal tone is very inconsistent. Not only did it sound as if she was singing in an echo chamber, her singing fluctuated between the back of her throat and her nose. If you are looking for a CD to demonstrate good vocal technique, look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Inessa just gets better and better.......2001-10-02

Let's hope this CD is back in stock soon, as no lover of great voices would want to be without it.

I loved Galante on both the Debut and Encore CDs, but here she is nothing short of sensational. Her marvellously seductive soprano has never sounded better than on this 1999 recording, and her vocal technique is faultless. For a prime example of the latter, try the Caccini Ave Maria for which she is justly famous. Galante tops her own celebrated recording! Her vocal agility (along with new-found colours in the voice) will astound listeners.

Unlike her earlier version, the Ave Maria, along with the remainder of the CD, is beautifully arranged in the appropriate period setting. The London Musici provide marvellous support throughout, and the sound is excellent.

There are so many highlights that it seems unnecessary to single any one track out. But I will say that the Ave Maria and Handel's Lascia ch'io pianga are worth the price of the CD alone.

If you only want to own one Inessa Galante CD, then this is the one to go for.

5 out of 5 stars Pergolesi is so perfect!.......2000-07-20

I have always loved the Pergolesi Suite but here it is perfected! Dont get me wrong.....the rest of the cd is excellent but Stabat Mater is the highlight. This cd is a must have and wont end up being a substitute for a coaster!
