Great Album .......2007-05-13

I love Thin Lizzy I was introduced to them through jailbreak and since then i just can't get enough I have Fighting Nightlife Johnny The Fox, Live and Dangerous, Bad Reputation and Shades of A Blue Orphanage, Vagabonds features Eric Bell Sole guitarist but he does this record justice plenty of great tunes Whisky in the Jar, Vagabonds, and Little Girl In Bloom (my personal Fav) The Harmonies Are Top Notch as for Phil's Ear For Melody And Lyrics that are Heartfelt but The Riffs are classic,and the songs are timeless

This cd is the first famous album, (not the first but the third), you can here Mama nature said with the great slide guitar of Eric Bell, Slow blues, black boys on the corner, and the famous folk song whiskey in the jar.

Sing your lullabying tune..........2007-01-30

In the fall of 1972, Thin Lizzy gambled on recording an Irish folk and recorded their first major hit, the classic "Whisky in the Jar". This driving version of the song was a curious selection for a single, but from its memorable intro to its "here I am in prison" conclusion, the song created a new market for the struggling band. With renewed confidence they recorded their album `Vagabonds of the Western World' which was released in September 1973. The record marked a turning point in the band's career for a number of reasons. It was their last record for Decca, the final bow for Eric Bell as their lead guitarist and hence their last as a power trio. `Vagabonds' was supposed to make or break the band but instead it did neither. It did however force Lynott and Downey to regroup before expanding on their legend. The lp is very much a hit or miss affair. While it is marked improvement from the previous album, it is still not one of the classics as a whole that the band would later turn out in abundance. Highlights for me would include "The Rocker", one of the key tracks of Lizzy's career and their future encore number. It is a barnstorming tale of Lynott bravado as only Philip can voice, and revealed one of his most successful characters, the barroom brawler/heartbreaker supreme. "Vagabonds of the Western World" is another play on Celtic mythology that Lynott did so well with its magnificent "tura loora loora loroli" intro and powerhouse "blue eyes" chorus, an absolute stunner!! For me the most memorable highlight of album #3 is "Little Girl in Bloom", one of Philip Lynott' most emotional vocals and quite possibly the man's most beautiful poetic accomplishment, a gifted songwriter at the peak of his powers. "Gonna Creep Up on You" is a great metal track, the music seems to stalk you as well. The rest of `Vagabonds' is fair but not great although I love Eric Bell's solo on "Hero and the Madman" though the song is very odd. Two lame blues tunes and a so so ballad wrap up this good but not great LP. As an added bonus on CD, "Whiskey" is included along with "Randolph's Tango" which was the other non-lp single of 1973. Special note, "Whiskey's" B side, "Black Boys on the Corner", which is an absolutely brilliant hard rock song is here as well. "What you doin' man?" "Teddy boy you got to roll" "Let me tell you the story of a vagabond"!!

Humble Beginnings.......2006-12-07

Thin Lizzy are pretty much an unknown band in America. Sure, they may have had one hit, but who really knows anything by this band? In fact, ask the average person who sings, "The Boys Are back In Town" and most of em probably won't even be able to tell you. Those fairly familiar with the band know there was a "classic" period of their career, but even more obscure are the days before they became a dual guitar powerhouse. Vagabonds(their 3rd album) is an excellent look into the early days of their career. Certain critics have mixed reviews of Lizzy's early days, stating that Lizzy had an uneven sound and hadn't "found" themselves yet. Sure, they ended up in a much different place than they started, but they certainly don't sound unsure of themselves on this album. Mixing elements of folk, funk, hard rock, and even psychadelic rock, this album should appeal to fans of stoner rock and trippy hippy rock. Phil's voice isn't quite as smooth as we know it would become(that could be the production too), but there are hints of what Lizzy would become on The Rocker. This is a wonderful album to anyone who appreciates Phil Lynott's style as well as any other curious parties who dig late 60s/early 70s music. This is a surprisingly cool gem to discover. It might even have you wondering why it never made any kind of impact.

Why wasn't this on college radio?.......2005-11-11

Back in '73 I'd never heard of Thin Lizzy, but pitchers of their records were in record stores over in Europe & music rags featured ads for something called Tales of [or from] a Blue Orphanage: they were popular on the continent.

In the home where I worked, there in Germany, the 16 year old with the muscular dystrophy had me put the record on the turntable. His big head bobbed over his withered body.

Wow! Whiskey in the Jar, Little Girl in Bloom, even Hero & the Madman: why wasn't this stuff on the college radio station? When I departed for the US of A & home, the kid gave me that record.

So, 30+ years later, after I reduced the vinyl to pops, crackles, & fuzz, I bought the CD: don't where those extree songs are from, but Whiskey in the Jar(oh), My Mama Nature, Song for While I'm Away remain fiery stuff. (Whiskey in the Jar sounds like some 13th-century Meistersaenger ode & it is.) By the time T.L. was on radio, Lynott sounded like Springsteen & was a couple years from dead.

Nope, can't go wrong with Vagabonds: tura lura lura lye.

Few Could Sing Neapolitan Songs like Lanza.......2007-03-13

Neapolitan music is very special and unique. It requires singing from the soul and heart and a voice that articulates the language and its many nuances

Mario Lanza was not Neapolitan but he mastered the dialect and the music and the lyrics in a way that few have been able to articulate. As always, Lanza gives a wonderful performance on this album which does not need or deserve the pieces from the Vagabond King.

The greatest voice of this century and the twentieth century comes out in this splendid work. Just having the Neapolitan songs sung by Mario is worth the cost. I recommend it highly for lovers of the best and brightest, like Lanza was.

Canto Neapolitane.......2006-02-08

This was the last album Lanza recorded in which he was able to muster all his vocal splendor and create what remains perhaps the most passionately interpreted set of Neapolitan songs ever recorded by any tenor in history ( a close second being recordings by di Stefano, Corelli and Sergio Franchi).

Lanzas diction is uncannily Neapolitan, which is no mean feat considering that the Neapolitan dialect is all but impossile to duplicate by anyone not born and raised in the region. Even such greats as Corelli and del Monaco had problems with it and the much over-rated Pavarotti never even came close.
Lanza nailed it!

The song selection is great with the exception of Funicula...that song doesn't work no matter who sings it.
My personal favs are Dichitenchello Vuie, Voce la Notte, and Passione...Canta'p'me being a close second.
Lanzas gift for pouring his every emotion into his singing really comes forth on these songs. Moreso even than on any of his operatic selections which are peerless in their own right.
However; in my mind, Lanza always did his best work on the Neapolitan songs.

The songs from the soundtrack of the film "The Vagabond King" are about as lame as can be. They are right along the usual line of Hollywood junk which Lanza recorded too much of in his short career.
Thus the 4 star rating. I turn the CD off once the Neapolitan stuff is over with.

The only other major distraction here is not due to anything Mario could have controlled or done differently. It's in that that RCA decided to release this album in this then newly discovered "stereo surround" format, which was nothing more than overblown reverb effects. This worked well for a thin voiced Elvis, but it didn't fare to well with this type of material or Marios larger than life voice.

In the end, this is, and always will be a collection of the finest sung Neapolitan songs ever recorded.

If your gong to get one Mario Lanza CD or CD Set get the Mario Lanza Collection, But if you want to get one more, get this one, Mario Lanza At His Best. This is one CD (not a set like the collection) which contain many beautiful Italian folk songs and then competes with the songs from Lanza's Movie, The vagabond king. Lanza sings wonderful renditions of Funiculi Funicula, Dicitencello Vuie (just beautiful), Maria Mari (my Grandmothers favorite song), Voce e' Notte, Canta pe' Me, O Surdato Namurato, Comme Facette Mammeta?, Santa Lucia Luntana, Fenesta Che Lucive, Ta Ca Nun Chiagne, 'Na Sera 'e Maggio, and Passione (Which is just beautiful. Then the CD moves to the songs form the vagabond King; Drinking Song, Some day, Love Me Tonight, only A Rose, Tomorrow, Nocturne, Song of the vagabonds and Finale all well done. Judy Rasking sings with Mario on Some day, Only A Rose, Tomorrow, and Finale.

world's greatest tenor.......2005-10-29

Mario Lanza was a singer who possessed an absolutely glorious voice. soaring and beautiful, with a deep rich tone. He sings exclusively in his native Italian language on these recordings and the record is in two parts. the first 12 songs are more operatic in structure, containing moody, solemn passages in which Lanza's voice excels in the passion and romantic solitude that this kind of music is so well at expressing. the remaining eight tracks are a series called The Vagabond King and it's song structures are a little bit more of the old Hollywood variety, beginning with the cheery "Drinking Song" (which was a high rated hit in the u.s.). Mario is joined by soprano Judith Raskin on 4 of the songs and his singing is in English for these songs. this is a great introduction to the world of this fabulous singer.

I've fallen in love again.......2003-01-12

I had this as a LP record many years ago, and was absolutely thrilled to find the CD. I had always loved Lanza's voice, but I now realize that he was without a doubt one of the best tenor voices of the century. His ability to sing so many different types of songs is astounding. His voice is strong, filled with emotion and in some of the songs you can hear that he is hugely enjoying himself. What an incredible pity that he died at such a young age and was never able to fulfill all that he could have been.

Great box set.......2007-06-27

I remember my first exposure to TL while speeding across the Arizona desert when something came on the radio that shook me to my core. If the song astounded me, I later was floored to discover that a black Irishman was "That Voice" and had co-wrote (with his schoolmate-the great drummer Brian Downey) "The Cowboy Song," perhaps the finest rock tune ever written about the American West.

As with any box set, one wishes some things had been put on and others left off, but this is a great collection. Many fans in North America only know Thin Lizzy from the hit song, "The Boys Are Back In Town" or the "Jailbreak" album and that is a shame. As great as the Jailbreak album was, it only scratched the surface of what this incredible band could produce. Phil Lynott was a masterful songwriter, singer, musician. poet and a fine band leader who guided Thin Lizzy through several guitar lineups with great skill. Every guitar player was allowed to show their stuff and Eric Bell, Brian Roberston, Scott Gorham, Gary Moore, Snowy White, and John Sykes were/are great players who owe a great deal to Phil. The bottom end with Phil on bass and the great and vastly underrated Brian Downey on drums propelled these guitar slingers and the band to amazing performances. Sadly, Philip was also a drug addict whose self destructive behavior hurt many who loved him and eventually eroded the memory of much great work. TL broke up in 1983 andby 1985, Phil wasn't "big enough" to be asked to perform at the famous "Live Aid:" concert. The next year, Phillip was gone.

Now it is time for reflection and to remember the amzaing life and career of Phil Lynott, a truely unique and gifted talent, a very brave man who beat almost all the odds, and leader of one of the greatest rock bands in history. This package will guide the casual fan to a better appreciation of what TL was all about. For us old timers, this box contains great joy and no little sadness. Oh, Philip, what might have been. One can't help but to be touched by Phil's heartfelt treatment of "Wild One" or the "Freedom Song". I remember my first exposure to TL while speeding across the Arizona desert when something came on the radio that shook me to my core. If the song astounded me, I later was floored to discover that a black Irishman was "That Voice" and had co-wrote (with his schoolmate-the great drummer Brian Downey) "The Cowboy Song," perhaps the finest rock tune ever written about the American West.

I have a collection of old vinyl Thin Lizzy recordings that I haven't played in years. I picked up this box set and am very pleased with the collection. Yes, I wish some things had been put on and others left off, but still, a great collection. Many fans in North America only know Thin Lizzy from, "The Boys Are Back In Town" or the Jailbreak album and that is a shame. As great as the Jailbreak album was, it only scratched the surface of what this incredible band could produce. Phil Lynott was a masterful songwriter, singer, musician. poet and a fine band leader who guided Thin Lizzy through several guitar lineups with great skill. Every guitar player was allowed to show their stuff and Eric Bell, Brian Roberston, Scott Gorham, Gary Moore, Snowy White, and John Sykes were/are great players who owe a great deal to Phil. The bottom end with Phil on bass and the great and vastly underrated Brian Downey on drums propelled these guitar slingers and the band to amazing performances. He was also a drug addict whose self destructive actions hurt many who loved him and sadly washed away the memory of so much great work. It is time for reflection and to remember Phil and TL as one of the greatest rock bands in history. This package will guide the casual fan to a better appreciation of what TL was all about. For us old timers, this box contains great joy and no little sadness. Oh, Philip, what might have been. One can't help but to be touched by Phil's heartfelt treatment of "Wild One" or the "Freedom Song". Get this package along with the "Live and Dangerous" CD where Phil's voice over the final guitar work at the end of "Southbound" is as emotive as any I have ever heard in any category or song.

This a great box for newcomers to Thin Lizzy. It covers a nice array of songs from various Lizzy albums. It is packed with hits but even if you are a big fan you should invest the money. You probably have all of Lizzy's popular songs just on different CDs, but here they sound better, with live cuts and rare b-sides included as well. For the newcomer it covers over a decade of hits and moods. It's great to put on and just lose yourself in. I give Vagabonds Kings Warriors Angels five stars for a well rounded attempt. If you are just finding out about Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy then this would be the pinnacle of your collection.

Hi,I must say this is one amazin box set.I mean anything with Thin Lizzy is amazin, but this just takes the cake. Perfect song selection and the rare tracks/Demos are awsome too. The box set is also like a book to , so u get a box set and a book, wut else could u ask for. The best rare track is Sisters of Mercy beautiful song, almost brings tears to my eyes. Old Town is amazin too, in that song Phil is asking for help, but no one heard him.My fav songs are CowBoy Song,Rosisle,Renegade,FoolsGold,Fighting,Lizzy Mobile,. Also like I stated before the box set is like a book and it tells you the whole bands history,all the former band memebers,and discgorophy,realse of songs and there dates.SO PLEASE BUY THIS BOX SET YOU WONT BE DISSAPOINTED.....PHIL LYNOTT GOD BLESS HIM.....WHERE EVER HE IS :)
