Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good? Certainly. "New Approach"? Hardly.......2006-12-09

Some highlights: The CD takes you through II-V-I progressions in all keys, major and minor. There are scales to look at, if you want to look at them when you start. There are some sample etudes. There is a long list of sample runs in D that start out simple and gradually grow in difficulty. Some of them have comments to explain the techniques used.

This set is a versatile tool - the CD tracks have a great band accomaniment that you can use to practice improvising on your own, learn some comping skills, practice your own comping, practice scales and chords, . . . Exercises are in Bass, Treble, Bb and Eb, so just about anyone that doesn't play F french horn can use them easily. The charts in the book are extensive. The set is as good as you care to make it.

I had a small customer service that the publisher remedied instantly and courteously. Bravo!

If I could change one thing, the exercises in D might be a little more musical and a little less "classroom". I wouldn't recommend playing many of them "as is" in a real setting. However, you aren't tied to those examples when using the CD, so it's not really a big issue. A CD with 12 tracks of ii-v-i, one in each key (major and minor) instead of just D, might be a nice addition for the beginner level, but it is also beneficial to jump around different keys as some of the exercises do.

Why four stars instead of five? I have a personal bias. Music books that "change your life" with minimal user effort get five stars from me. Music books that "change your life", but only with considerable effort on your part, get four. Call me lazy.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars hardcore.......2007-01-18

good collection of stuff. the live tracks are a bit ropey, but that's how good hardcore should be done ;) best served loud!

5 out of 5 stars Pure Force.......2006-04-11

Other reviewers have asserted that Negative Approach didn't understand hardcore and that their music missed the point entirely. Negative Approach was pure hardcore/punk. Hardcore/punk is a nihilistic outcry of pure rage and force. It expresses the disenfranchisement and alienation of its followers/participants. Negative Approach's music is pure force. It hits the listener like a ton of bricks. And so what if the lyrics aren't amazing and the music is a little cliched, that's not the point. The soul behind it is pure power, and it hits to the core of what hardcore/punk music is about.

4 out of 5 stars Im angry, angry, angry , angry.......2004-02-10

I love negative approach. I really do. But if there is one drawback its that i cant listen to them all the time like some ofmy favorite bands like crass, addiction face, and the dead milkmen. Their just too angry. Ive got an analogy to sum it up for you. he hem. NEGATIVE APPROACH IS TO FURIOUS as DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL IS TO UNREASONABLY BUTHURT OVER NOTHING. I love the album though i mean being mad isnt bad but N/A were certainly not the greatest.

5 out of 5 stars pure rage.......2003-01-24

"Total Recall" is one of the best representations of hardcore that America has produced. It's not that Negative Approach are great musicians or lyricists, and the production is not what some people would call "passable" (though I love the raw stuff) ... it's that the sheer anger and nihilistic hopelessness that so many of us have experienced at one time or another comes through loud and clear in their music.
I have to take issue with a previous reviewer's comments on this album. He wrote that NA didn't "get it," that they were too one-dimensional and were just acting out on one aspect of punk/hardcore; the anger and disaffection.
Well, maybe that's how NA ACTUALLY felt. If they did write these songs out of affectation, I certainly don't hear it. The first 11 tracks (their song off of the "Process of Elimination" comp and their self titled 7") in particular are so full of venom and bile, with Brannon's perfectly growled vocals, that I can't believe Negative Approach didn't mean every word they sung at the time they were singing them.
Besides, I think bands like SSD are what made people laugh at hardcore (I love SSD too, by the way). The militantly straight edge bands that emerged in the early 80s probably did far more to alienate people than bands like NA. Yeah, maybe NA's fans were meatheads and skinheads... but, then again, so were a lot of Black Flag's (and Fear's!) fans.
At any rate, all that aside, this album rocks. The "Tied Down" LP isn't that great, but the rest of the tracks more than make up for it. Happy, well-adjusted people may not dig it, but as for angry f**k-ups, well, Negative Approach is IT.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent 1980s hardcore you can't get enough of.......2002-12-14

This is a discography of the *very* influential midwestern hardcore band, with some appended live and demo tracks. If you like MINOR THREAT, BLACK FLAG, or SSD, this will appeal to you: classic songs such as "Can't Tell No One," "Deadstop," and "Why Be Something that You're Not?" should be in every punk's lexicon. The first 7" (#2-11) is amazing, and the LP is better than MINOR THREAT's LP. Most people don't like the live tracks but they are a good time if you can get beyond the bad sound quality. The only thing I would say is that most of this music is same-y so it can get boring if you aren't really into it. That said, this is a must-have.

A cross between big band and jazz at it's finest. This wil put you in the mood, no matter what your mood is. From the period before he went a little over the top. A must for every Kenton lover.

I have literally loved Stanley Newcomb Kenton's music since I was a kid. I had "lost touch" over the years and decided to rebuild my Kenton collection when I saw all of the CDs you had available. I am thoroughly delighted with this album as well as the other three I purchased (Kenton in Hi FI, The Stagedoor Swings, and Cuban Fire). Thank you.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Classic jazz-funk trumpet I.......2007-07-07

The monster disco hit "Funkin' For Jamaica (N.Y.)" is almost worth the price of this Japanese import CD on its own. Even now, you put that one on at any party and it's sure to get the place jumping. 27 years old and it still sounds as clear as a bell with air-piercing vocals by Toni Smith and a crisp production that many so-called producers can only dream of these days.

I said 'almost' though. Lucky then that there's even better on offer here, especially if soulful, funky jazz trumpet is what you're looking for. Produced by Dave Grusin & Larry Rosen and featuring people like Grusin himself, Marcus Miller, Bernard Wright, Buddy Wiilams, Boby Broom, Jorge Dalto, Carol Steele, Lesette Wilson and Bob Franceshini, this is as good as it got back in 1980.

There's not a dud track to be found but my other favourites include The cool breezy, "Her Secret Smile", with guitar licks and solo by Bobby Broom. The funky "Forever More", and "Dreams Of Lovin' You" with a great tenor sax solo from Bob Franceshini. "Nocturne" starts off with a crescendo, with piano solo by Jorge Dalto, and then becomes by a back and forth between Browne and Franceshini. And then it just slows right down into this spacey, moody tune with 'nocturnal' sounds with bass and/or synth by either Marcus Miller, Grusin, Wilson or by all three.
The dreamy "Moon Rise" has a great bass line by Marcus Miller and the beautiful "Weak In The Knees" with vocals by Victoria Sylva brings an end to the proceedings.

This album and it's 1981 follow-up, Magic are in my opinion Tom Browne's best and complement one another very well. Both are highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A classic finally available!!.......2001-11-03

This cd is smokin'! It is worth every penny. I must have waited more than a decade for this to come out on CD and it finally happened in 2001. Tom Browne is one heck of a musician. If you're looking for smooth Jazz grooves then look no further. Two of the tracks have vocals by Toni Smith and let me tell you, Toni rocks the house.

By the way, two of the other tracks are mislabeled here on the web. Track number 4 is actually called "Dreams of lovin' you" and track number 8 is "Weak in the Knees." The disc and packaging are reproduced exactly how this recording was originally released on vinyl. It is a must have!

Okay Tom, now let us know when you're going to make the rest of your Arista catalog available on disc. Thanks!!

1 out of 5 stars Unbelievable! Just Unbelievable!.......2006-04-09

First of all I'm upset that I didn't have an option of awarding this disaster zero stars. But that's another story.

I must be old-fashioned because in my day most vocalists could carry a tune and if they had instruments could play them at the very least with some degree of mediocrity. The Raincoats are a total mess from the first note and beyond. Anyone who could give this music 5 stars must be brain dead. I suspect that it's probably fashionable to jump on the bandwagon for a band (and I use the word very loosely) with absolutely no talent. Getting a root canal with a pneumatic drill would be more entertaining. Anyone buying this CD should be subject to intense psychotherapy.

3 out of 5 stars Too much hype?.......2004-07-19

Yeah this cd is pretty interesting. I just don't know how special a band like the Raincoats is. At moments it approaches perfection, but then the singing just utterly ruins it. It reminds me of a lot of things, early Sonic Youth, early new wave stuff like Blondie etc. also reminds me a lot of some Dick's Picks Grateful Dead shows cause it has that same kind of sloppiness to it. I picked it up cause I heard of how 'genius' the band is, and I guess its the same thing as the hype around Wesley Willis or that one retarded band that did "My pal foot foot" minus the novelty appeal. The songs are nice, the drums are really nice, but the execution just aint so great. Skip it, or don't, I don't care.

1 out of 5 stars ummm... maybe I am in left feild picking daisy's but............2004-02-23

I just didn't vibe with this band. They sort of sound like 'The Ex' which is a GREAT BAND (check them out) but they lost me with their signing. This would be a great band if they didn't sing. Its almost like going to the dentist.

5 out of 5 stars From bedknocks to broomsticks.......2002-04-05

This CD is sooo gooood, i just had to write another review for it. I mean if you don't buy this CD you will never know how far you could have gone in life. This CD explains some of the harder things in life, it shows you how to get through life in a action packed fun filled way. Smoke that.

    5 out of 5 stars jump, jive.......2001-11-13

The raincoats, what can i say I love em. I think the best way to describe their music is like this "soul inspiring anthems that get in yer head and stick there like grip tape" There is just something about listing to girls who can't sing and are even worse at playing.

    5 out of 5 stars A Comic-Opera Treasure!.......2007-01-28

Dittersdorf is a sort of working-man's Mozart; in fact, this opera sounds similar to some of Mozart's early operas. But Mozart sought to break the rules and to explore new musical ideas; Dittersdorf is not an innovator...yet he is no less a master! This performance, too, is a materpiece of refined (not always!) comedy; the arias include some extremely difficult vocal leaps and trills, yet the primary joy is the witty verse. W.H. Auden (no less!) ramrodded this translation to English. And Anna Russell, famed for her "Analysis of Wagner's Ring Cycle" steals every scene she's in! Ad-libbing shamelessly, her introductory aria, all by itself, is worth more than the purchase price!

5 out of 5 stars an obscure delight!.......2002-07-31

Eleanor Steber's image on the cover of this set caught my eye while rummaging through the cut-out bins of San Francisco on a recent opera whirlwind. What a lost treasure this performance is - recorded "LIVE" in NYC 1965! All the principles shine, their energy ebullient. Don't hesitate, buy it and smile before it disappears.

      Album Description

Come Back To You, the band's sophomore release, is filled with the band's soaring vocals, anthemic choruses and buoyant melodies. The bittersweet pop songs on their latest effort chronicle the young band grappling with significant changes in their lives; what happens when your dreams do come true, losing and finding love, and readjusting to life in your hometown once you explored beyond its borders.

Special guests on a few tracks include Drew Glackin of The Silos on lap steel and Max Bemis of Say Anything on vocals.
