Wynton Marsalis headlines this lively, Night of the Cookers-type gig, recorded in Manhattan in 2002. Joining him on the frontline is his long-time partner, alto saxophonist Wessell "Warmdaddy" Anderson, backed by a rhythm section featuring bassist Kengo Nakarmura, drummers Robert Rucker and Joe Farnsworth, and pianist, Eric Lewis. The material is what you would expect on informal set like this: A riffing romp through Thelonious Monk's "Green Chimney's," two bouncy renditions of "Just Friends," and "What is This Thing Called Love," the enduring ballad, "You Don't Know What Love Is," Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee," delivered at bop-speed, and Paul Barbarin's Crescent City chaser, "2nd Line." Add percussionist Orlando Q. Rodriguez's Latin tinges and brother Delfeayo's on-point production to Marsalis's flawless flights, and you have a document that captures improvisation in the heat of performance, forged by the sacred give-and-take between the artist and the audience. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

3 out of 5 stars Gives the impression of feeling but does not evoke much.......2007-04-05

Perhaps a prime example of how a well primed audience (alcohol, etc) can drive the performers of the music into simple areas of loudness, virtuosity for its own sake, and thumpy rhythms. But in the peace of one's home it just does not come off that well. Music being the thing, I have to say the clunky rhythms and unfeeling playing leaves me indifferent. Not a worthwhile investment.

5 out of 5 stars Wynton at his absolute best.......2006-12-22

Jazz critics have been hard on Wynton Marsalis because of his analytical style. If you are familiar with his work I think you can hear what the critics were talking about but I never thought they gave him enough credit for his incredible technique and creativity. On this recording he has created something special and the tired old criticism of his over-analytical style will be put to rest. The venue is intimate and the crowd response adds to the enjoyment of the listening experience. The sound quality is excellent and his ensemble is first-rate. Wynton comes alive in this recording and his improvisation is fresh, exciting and revealing. Wynton has a love for jazz that shines through in this live set. I personally feel it is one of the best jazz albums of the year and should be included in any jazz collection.

1 out of 5 stars Audience ruins it.......2006-02-26

First, let me say that I've followed Wynton for a long time. I first saw him at the Kool Jazz Festival in Philadelphia in 1982 where he got into a cutting contest with Freddie Hubbard, and they blew the roof off the Academy of Music. "Sister Cheryl" from his first album is one of my all time favorite songs. "Hot House Flowers" was the very first audio CD I ever bought when I transitioned from vinyl LPs. And I consider his version of "You Don't Know What Love Is" on Marsalis Standard Time Vol 2 absolutely transcendent.

All that said, I've just listened to "Live at the House of Tribes" for the third time and am fairly certain that I'll never listen to it again. The music isn't bad, but the audience just ruins it for me. It's like sitting next to a table of drunks who won't shut up. Whoever said "this is not posers hooting to get their hipness on record" either doesn't get out much or is far more tolerant than I am.

3 out of 5 stars Another museum piece from Marsalis.......2006-02-16

Marsalis turned his attention to classical music, a critic noted, after "getting his ass kicked every night in Art Blakey's band". He's a very good classical trumpet player- though not of the first rank- and his reputation in both jazz and classical worlds seems to be in large part built on the the novelty of crossing over. His status in non-Jazz circles was established by Ken Burns' documentary, which made him out to me the New Hope of Jazz, and led to his leaving his mark at Lincoln Center, where they don't know much about jazz either.

Marsalis approaches jazz the same way he approaches classical music, which is to say as a museum piece to be dusted off and played none-for-note perfect, devoid of any real fire or imagination. You'll never hear a trumpet player described as playing "in the style of Wynton Marsalis" the way someone might be described as playing "like Miles" because there's simply nothing worth copying in Marsalis' playing.

This album, like all Marsalis albums, consists of very restrained, very controlled playing. There isn't an original lick on it. I suppose it makes great background music, but who wants to pay for that? If you want to hear a really great jazz combo led by a trumpet player, buy ANY album of Miles, Bix, Jimmy McPartland, Bobby Hackett, Clifford Brown, Chet Baker... the list goes on. And you won't find Wynton's name on it.

4 out of 5 stars Tasty.......2006-02-01

This is a good time. Marsalis' playing here is very nice, very confident, full of fun and clearly reveling in the exuberance of the audience. I'm a fan of live jazz recordings that capture a moment in time and give you a sense of the place and the atmosphere of the place. Live At The House of Tribes is successful on both counts. Enjoy.

I have found that Stellamara's music brings me to a very creative, focused state of mind. I alternate between dancing to the CD and just allowing my artwork to flow from my heart and head through to my hands (I work with clay) - Stellamara stimulates the artistic muse within.

I ordered this with the other stellamara (great artist!!) CD as a package, and I am still waiting for it to be delievered. I think its a lost cause. I hope everyone else has better luck. I bet its a great CD. I'll give it more stars when amazon decides to ship it

3 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2006-08-10

I have to admit that, as much as I love this style of music, this album is a bit weak to me. Not nearly as rich as something from Lisa Gerrard or Azam Ali. I put these guys near the bottom of my list for this style, right above Lumin. Still a good listen but there is alot of stuff out there that I would reach for first.

4 out of 5 stars Transporting and Lush.......2005-01-26

In short, this is beautiful. Moody, medieval, and Middle-Eastern. The music and voices are exotic and they transport me. I enjoy it for listening, mood creation, ambiance making, and relaxing. Yummy.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2004-06-14

A splendind combination of medieval western european chansons with present-day Balkan folk tunes. An album which is among my favourite neofolk releases, including Dead Can Dance, Vas, Axiom of Choice... I am looking forward to their upcoming release "The Seven Valleys" and searching for a limited edition of "Entrance" album.

Incognito's third album nods to the influences that ground their jazz-funk-and-soul jams. The 11-member band adds a Latin feel to a snazzy cover of Stevie Wonder's "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing," while "Magnetic Ocean" has a Weather Report-in-ballad-mode vibe. "Change" combines Maysa Leak's Chaka Khan-like power with sweeping Soul II Soul-ish strings, and "Need to Know" gives props to Roy Ayers (check the clavinet) and Rick James (horn section). The band is at its best showcasing Leak or featuring soloists, as on "Colibri" and the Mandrill-ish "Closer to the Feeling." Still, some attempts fall flat, like the syrupy "L'Arc en Ciel de Miles" that's more Chuck Mangione than Prince of Darkness. This one's for smooth-jazz aficionados; Brit-funk fans should check the band's later fare. --Suzanne McElfresh

Ain't no doubt about it, this is good music. No correction; this is great music. The Cogs brought their A game on this one. It really is a standout release. Highlights are numerous, but the one that knocks me out is Maya's powerhouse delivery on I Love What You Do For Me. Man! Such emotion.....and what a voice!!! Do yourself a favor and pick this one up.

I have been a fan of the musical genius Bluey and this band of musicians for many years; and they continue to amaze me with their dynamic sound. The refreshing brand of music that Incognito continues to create is a real delight and totally overshadows the roster of manufactured faddish so-called performers currently getting radio airplay. A must have for your Incognito CD collection!

3 out of 5 stars Something's lost in the translation of Incognito's "Scribes".......2000-08-15

After some respectable but unremarkable work in the late eighties, British jazz/funk/soul outfit made a wise move in the early nineties with the hiring of vocalist Maysa Leak. Her rich vocals have a honey-colored tone all their own, and she skillfully manages to sound emotionally powerful while maintaining a silky-smooth nuance that makes it all sound effortless. Unfortunately, the material on hand for her Incognito debut, 1993's "Tribes Vibes & Scribes," shows there was still room for improvement.

The most noticeable problem is Leak's lack of elbow room. She's only featured on five tracks, and while she handles them beautifully they don't use her talents to their full potential. The scatted samba "Colibri" is enjoyable, but the repetitive vocal runs leave Maysa the chance to do little else but go through the motions. "Change" is a midtempo delight, featuring lush strings and a trademark Incognito drum lick behind Leak's masterful vocal, but "I Love What You Do for Me" is so strikingly similar it's a surprise some sort of production tooling wasn't attempted. "River of My Dreams" gets off to a dreamy a capella start, but ends up robbed at a length of barely more than a minute.

Of course, this wouldn't be as obvious if the instrumental material were stronger. And while the Yellowjackets-flavored "Magnetic Ocean" and the slinky "Tribal Vibes" deliver, fare like "Closer to the Feeling" and "Pyramids" sound like watered-down Brand New Heavies, closer to the realm of smooth-jazz than the funk that is obviously being attempted. But Maysa's fifth track is worth the price of admission all on its own: her flawless and spirited vocal take a Latin-flavored, horn-laden rendition of Stevie Wonder's "Don't You Worry Bout a Thing" to the realm of brilliance, making for one of the band's most memorable moments.

Completists of either Incognito or Maysa Leak will no doubt want this in their collection; there are definitely enough worthwhile moments to make it a wise purchase. But in hindsight, "Tribes Vibes & Scribes" is somewhat of a low watermark for a band whose artistry would later reach high tide.

    Album Description

1999 release by this Neurosis side-project, intent on exploring the spiritual and philosophical concepts of Neurosis via the sonic and visual arts. This release is a companion to Neurosis' 'Times Of Grace' and is designed to be played simultaneously with it, creating a unique multi-dimensional sound experience. 11 untitled tracks & over 66 minutes of music.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Two soundtracks in one.......2005-06-15

I came to "Grace" thinking I was getting some ambient music. Not ambient electronica -- knowing that Tribes of Neurot was Neurosis' alter ego, I wouldn't expect them to turn into a synth band -- but perhaps something closer to what Brian Eno did to Robert Fripp's guitars in some of the realizations of his original concept of ambient music. "Grace," it turns out, is not ambient music, but AMBIENCE. A combination of drones, sound effects, and occasional bits of speech, this is more of a sonic poem than a strictly musical recording. So, not something to put in the headphones to chill with, not "mellow tunes"; the best effect is to be had with the eyes closed, actively listening, perhaps imagining what visuals might be used in a film to which "Grace" is the soundtrack (and, judging from the sound that begins and ends the recording, of film running through a projector, this might be exactly the intended effect).

And that's just by itself. Played simultaneously with Neurosis' "Times of Grace" on a second pair of stereo speakers, as intended, it truly is the multi-dimensional experience the promotional materials would have you believe. Of course, I would only recommend the dual listening to somebody who could enjoy the Neurosis disc by itself, as heavy metal isn't for everybody; but for those, "Grace" is likely to be a welcome addition, turning "Times of Grace" from a musical event into an immersive sonic landscape. If "Grace" is a movie, "Grace" plus "Times of Grace" is a 3-D movie (with an extra CD player in place of special cardboard glasses).

    4 out of 5 stars grace.......2001-01-09

Grace is certainly a strickingly different album to Times of grace, not 'heavy' no vocals. the album does not really revolve around the traditional band setting but is better described as a montage of sounds. This does not make Grace a bad album however, it is an intruiging concept and a fascinating listen. I would reccommend it to anyone regardless of musical taste for the sheer 'art' of it.

    4 out of 5 stars Graced.......2000-04-04

For anyone familiar with the styles of Tribes of Neurot, then you'll definitly want to add this to your collection. While played simultaneously with Neurosis' "Times of Grace" the two albums blend together. The distinct differences in the styles are apparent, yet the ambient quality of Tribes of Neurot counters the raw power of Neurosis in this ingenius concept. A Very original idea that, once again, shows why this style of music is far under-rated.

When I first got my mitts on a copy of this CD,I wasn't quite sure as to what to expect. It's a shame this posting doesn't include an image of the CD cover. It's very intriguing,to say the least. It might be tough to describe Lights In The Fat City's music to a potential interested party. How about part new age, part world fusion and part ambient electronic? In the right surroundings, you could successfully imagine yourself in the next world while listening to this disc. The lengthy cuts here are the best, like "Tasku"(13:43),"Surya"(24:53)and the title track "Memory Garden"(13:44).I've had this CD in or near my 'current rotation' stack for some time now.Line-up:Stephan Kent-didgeridoo&animal horns,Kenneth Newby-Indonesian suling, bells&varied electronics and Eddy Sayer-percussion.It's been said this is one of the best 'didgeridoo' offerings around.Take fully advantage of it.Highly recommended.

      5 out of 5 stars DREAMTIME IMAGES..........2004-05-29

...the Dreamtime of course being one of the central elements of Aboriginal spiritual beliefs - in the case of the music of Lights in a Fat City, however, the Dreamtime relates to the spirituality and soul of the entire world. This is - more or less - ambient music, but with a strong element of emotion. True, depending on the frame of mind and direction of purpose of the listener, this music could easily be used for meditation, for drifting away from the thought-level of the mind into the deeper, less defined regions - but there is a sense of direction and purpose here that is absent in much of the music being produced today that lays claim to the `ambient' area only to produce the aural equivalent of wallpaper. There are many notable artists who have risen above such mindless pursuits - Alio Die, Steve Roach, Robert Rich, Ora, Lustmord, Rapoon, O Yuki Conjugate, Templegarden, to name but a few. I would definitely add Lights in a Fat City to this creative level of explorers.

Performing here as a trio - Eddy Sayer, Kenneth Newby and Stephen Kent - and recorded live in San Francisco, the group employs a relatively small array of instruments that, combined with their unique tonal characteristics and the sensibilities and imaginations of the musicians, produce an incredible spectrum of sounds. Sayer performs on percussion and an instrument called a `hybrid harp', which, I'm guessing is producing the piano-like sounds I hear in places, along with other effects; Newby wields sulings (a bamboo flute used in Balinese gamelan ensembles), piri (a double-reed recorder from Korea), utilizes digital soundscapes and bells; Kent plays digeridoo and animal horns. That's the extent of the musician credits - it's not a long list, and it belies the variety of sounds to be heard in this exceptional recording. The three players interact sensitively - each of them contributes thoughtfully and eloquently to the overall mix. The feeling of the music is tranquil, but with an energy that is ever present, like a life-force, guiding the players as they traverse the tonal landscape.

This is transporting music of the highest level - on first listening, at the end of the album, I was left with a feeling that I can only describe as aural cleansing. It's definitely an experience I'll want to repeat - and it makes me want to check out the other recordings available by this ensemble.

      Highly recommended.

      4 out of 5 stars Ethno-ambient a la didge..........2001-11-12

Lights in a Fat City was the brainchild of Eddie Sayer, who here plays percussion and something called a hybrid harp. This is their latest album of four (one is currently out of print), and, for my money, is the best. On this album, Sayer is joined by two musicians who have each released their own albums, and have also both played with the acknowledged master of ambient music, Steve Roach.

The two are Kenneth Newby and Stephen Kent. Newby plays the Indonesian suling and piri, as well as bells, and also supplies electronics which are used sparingly. Kent, known for his prowess on the Australian didgeridoo, is much in evidence here on that instrument as well as on animal horns of various kinds.

The compositions, all original, range from 3 1/2 minutes to almost 25 minutes in length and are all fascinating: highly recommended!

I have heard a lot of didgeridoo musicians over the years and I would have to say that this is one of the top five on my list. I remember the first time I heard this album I immediately ordered it from amazon. You should definately pick up this album it tremendous!

5 out of 5 stars this is not emo metal .......2007-06-21

This album is a hybrid of sounds and lead singer Adam Jackson jumps from gut wrenching screams to calm melodies. This is not an emo record so do not get it twisted. Venus Complex,Translation of Fixes and Chroma are brutal tracks. There are many who try to compare these gentlemen to other bands but they fail to realize that they are in a league of their own. The Midwest is taking over soon and Dayton, Ohio will lead the way.

TWELVE TRIBES - The Rebirth of Tragedy
      -
Well title just about sums it up.... "Good Nu-Metal" - Twelve Tribes adds some serious Talentand musicianship, Song writing skills and a Refreshing Vibe to a desperately dying scene. The Rebirth of Tragedy is a solid CD from start to finish. At first I felt ashamed to like something so blatantly Nu-Metal... But there is so much talent and so many great songs on this CD it is undeniable. Music is Music. Forget Titles and enjoy anything that pleases the ears.... Twelve Tribes do just that. Can't wait for anew album!

3 out of 5 stars "...Smash us like collisions of planets".......2005-10-12

With "Twelve Tribes'" release `The Rebirth Of Tragedy', there was one thing I noticed about the album that is essential to the overall experience, it takes time.

When I first got a chance to see these guys live shortly after I was introduced to the metal/hardcore scene. I had never heard of them at the time, and wanted to discover every band associated within these genres. After what I considered a very solid and well performed performance, I met the band and picked up this CD.

When I first listened to it, almost none of it really clicked with me. I almost thought that the band I just saw live wasn't the same on the CD. I listened to it again, to try and soak up some of it better, but still nothing... and once again another CD gets set aside and rejected in my collection.

Then around a year ago, I saw them live again... and this time knowing what to expect. Once again an incredible live show, "So what is it about the CD that bugs me so much?" I would constantly ask myself, but still the CD went on with no attention.

Now over a year from when I saw them, and much more experience of many more bands... I decided once again to give this CD my full attention while reading the lyrics along with it.

This time I really started to hear what this band was all about. Listening to this CD I noticed one thing that I rarely hear in bands `now-a-days'; every instrument stands out, and the guitars and bass are almost never following each other, they are each doing their own parts, which adds a extreme amount of depth in each song. The guitar riffs written throughout are well processed and brought together. The bass not only brings out the guitar, but it stands out on it's own a lot... which is something I wish I could hear in more bands. The drummer is very talented and keeps the energy flowing throughout the entire album. And most of all comes the unique side of things, Adam Jackson's vocals which are in a sense of a yelling/shouting/rap tone with the occasional screaming, and the `singing' vocals are nothing short of amazing as well; while not a lot is present, where they are included they are never out of place.

The lyrics presented to us by Adam Jackson, are extremely well thought out and complex. While you may sometimes get lost in his thoughts, he sure knows how to give the reader a general sense of what he is trying to say and what his opinions of his life experiences are. I always can really appreciate great lyrics!

One of the biggest letdowns is the artwork and design by Cory Kildof of `Sons Of Nero'. Knowing the great reputation and work by `Sons Of Nero' I had really high expectations for the design, when overall I feel let down and my expectations shattered by the bland brown dusty colors used, and simplistic patterns and designs throughout. And while I really love the lyrics by Jackson, the idea to squash them all together senselessly becomes a burden to read which brings about another let down.

In conclusion, this album features plenty of great songs and great lyrics. In my opinion the best songs are featured more towards the beginning and near the end they become a little more stale, but overall this album is defiantly worth checking out but make sure as you listen, you give it your full attention along with an open mind, and you might find yourself listening to a great musical experience.

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing Band!.......2005-07-25

I attended the Summer Meltdown in Alaska yesterday with 12 Tribes as one of the performing bands. I was blown away and had to come here to purchase a CD first thing today.

5 out of 5 stars Twelve Tribes are awsome.......2005-07-25

I had never hear of 12 Tribes or had heard their music until yesterday, but they blew me away. I saw them live in Alaska performing with 36 Crazyfists among other bands and they totally kicked ass. I am definetely going to buy their music and will be looking forward to more shows and music from them in the future.

An obscure, hard to find CD that I still love listening to. Although the 'New Age' category is not one that normally appeals to me, Souther's electronics can evoke such wonderful and deep emotions.
Listen to the way 'Hands Held Apart' just tugs at your strings, or be blown away by the raw power of the title track. My favorite, "Go the Distance" will take your breath away.
