I am a Composer and performer who has roots in Irish music, and of all the fiddle recordings I've ever come across, this is by far one of the best and the most cherished of my entire collection. I was fortunate enough to obtain my copy from an original 78 LP and the clicks, pops, and other slight "accents" contained in the recording only add a warmth and nostalgic feeling to the tunes. This listener is taken back to the moment in time when Ennis recorded the trio and feels as if they are sitting in any pub listening to what was and still is the standard nightly music of Kerry's fiddlers. A beautiful recording and a must for any Irish music fan.

Kerry is one of the great fiddle counties in Ireland, and these three musicians are among the greatest of their generation. Recorded back in 1952 by Séamus Ennis, himself a great musician, in Charlie Horan's Bar in Castleisland, this is a true classic! You can leave behind the supergroups - you won't find more impressive talent or tasteful playing than this in the world of Irish traditional music. Listen out for the common habit whereby one fiddler plays the tune one octave below the other - just beautiful! If you love Irish fiddle music, you must have this album.

A Wonderful Preview.......2000-11-14

For those of you not familiar w/ Helicon, they are a Baltimore based trio that specializes in spreading the joy and beauty of international music. The group consists of Chris Norman, a world renown wooden flute player (he does classical music as well), Ken Kolodner, an incredible hammer dulcimerist and fiddler who also happens to have a P.h.d, and Robin Bullock, a magnificent guitarist, citernist, and fiddler, who actually started out in rock music. Anyway, the group has since begun to explore other interests so they no longer tour together, but that doesnt mean that their music is dead. In fact, it is alive and well on this recording. Track 1 is played by Norman on a type of double barreled flute that makes it sound like 2 flutes are playing, creating a truly unique sound. The second half of track 1 has a much simpler beat, but is still just as pleasing to the ear. Track 2 is a pair of beautiful Peruvian pieces that begin w/ a simple hammer dulcimer rhythm, but eventually adds in complexity, until the texture is truly South American. Next, they move to Sweden, a country rich in its fiddling, and perform two polskas. Although this CD does these pieces justice, the way they perform them is even better (they move their bodies to accent the dynamic changes in a sort of call and respond manner). Track 5 finally gets to some of the traditional Irish and American reels that have begun to find its place in mainstream America nowadays. They certainly do celtic music justice. Next, "Mr. Pantaleish" is perhaps the most mysterious piece on this recording, and it is truly haunting. Track 7 returns to America, where they play an old American fiddle tune, and a tune that they learned from Freyda Epstein, a brilliant musician from Virginia. All in all, this is a great recording, and is only a preview of what this incredible trio would accomplish in the coming years that they toured together. You will notice that this recording almost sounds like there is a concert in your room, because the music is pure. There is only limited audio enhancing machines used which makes the music all that much better. I highly encourage anyone to buy this CD, and to also check out Helicon's recordings, as well as the member's solo efforts. You will never tire of this stuff.

Pure joy!.......2006-10-02

I've never been a lover of fiddle music, preferring instead the classical violin. OK, now, I've changed my mind. These guys are enthralling. I HAVE to smile when I listen to the jigs and reels; I have to get quiet on the ballads. This is music I want played when I die: it's that good.

Fine Scottish Fiddlin.......2005-05-31

The blurb on the outer cover was this quote: "Blazin Fiddles is the Led Zepplin of Scottish music."
Well, I'm sold! When I listened to the cd I came up to this conclusion. The guy who said that quote must drink. A lot.
I was expecting the raw power of Led Zepplin. That's not to say the album isn't good. It's just really. . . polished. (That could be what the reviewer was getting at). The musicians have excellent technique and really capture the feel of the Scottish fiddle. Their tune choices are nothing short of outstanding. A great mix of jigs, reels, airs, and strathspeys. They definitely didn't re-hash tired old standards. The guitar and sometime piano accompaniment added to the full sound without detracting from the whole. The production is very slick and arranged and there are glimpses of the wildness of Scots music peeking through here and there. The cd is very good and well worth buying. I was expecting something with a little more fire and a little less orchestration.

Excellent.......2003-02-21

In spite of what anyone else thinks I just love this ablum. It is easy to get fast fiddle music but this is nice and slow and soft. You will catch yourself moving your feet but on the other hand the rest of your body will start to relax. It belongs in any collection of Irish music.
Wish he would do another just like it.
Almost forgot, it does have other instruments in it besides the fiddle such as banjo and piano.

Eh, it's pretty generic........2001-02-03

This album lacks the lift, bounce, and drive that makes Irish music so enjoyable to listen to. And with too much reverb, it sounds as if it was recorded in an empty bathhouse. Dave Miller is not a bad fiddle player, but this recording sounds like an American classical violinst who is still learning to play Irish music (which is exacly what it is). It does NOT sound like a real Irish traditional musician. That said, the slow tunes are actually quite pretty, since this is where Mr. Miller's classical training helps him most.

If you're interested in Irish fiddle music, there are a great many albums out there that provide a far better example of it than this one. I'd recommend buying them instead.
