Scotland is known far and wide for the majesty of its landscapes and the beauty of its song. Traditional Scottish melodies and lyrics have, for centuries, travelled abroad and become part of the culture of many other great nations.

When people visit any part of Scotland it is possible to experience this music in the form of an evening's entertainment with food, dancers and musicians. I gave this CD to a friend who is from Scotland. When she listened to it, she said it took her home with songs she had learned at her mother's knee. I loved it just for the magnificent voices.

This is a very fine, well-recorded collection of essential Grieg at a rock-bottom price. The Peer Gynt music is quite simply the finest "incidental" score ever written. Had Grieg been a modern composer, this would have been a film soundtrack, and it would have sold something like a billion copies by now. Grieg was always most comfortable working in short, lyrical forms; this music has retained its springlike freshness for over 120 years and shows no sign of going stale anytime soon. Here's a piece of trivia for you: the famous "Morning" scene from Peer Gynt, which everyone associates with some primal Scandinavian dawn, actually takes place in the Sahara desert! David Hurwitz

The Scottish enunciation and vocal timbre are beautiful........2000-10-01

"The choir was loved everywhere it sang," wrote its founder and conductor, "because it always sang from the heart." It is certainly the expressiveness and sincerity that one notices first, listening to this welcome CD reissue of many of the choir's famous recordings. These qualities are suggested mainly by the way the singers glide and slide from note to note, a manner described by the Italian word "portamento" and most evident here in the choir's singing of "Crimond" and "Belmont". Singing from the heart in this way was not achieved at the expense of perfect ensemble and vocal dexterity, however. Listen to the disciplined gaiety of "The Dashing White Sargeant"! Furthermore, the Scottish enunciation and the vocal timbre are beautiful throughout. Several of the tracks feature a mezzo soprano soloist, whose name I believe was Annie Tait. After a long absence from the market, Sir Hugh Roberton's Glasgow Orpheus Choir, founded in 1901, is making a welcome return with this and several other CDs. Some of the CDs are discrepant with regard to the information they provide about dates and recording venues. In this one Peter Dempsey provides excellent historical, appreciative and analytical notes, incorrect only in attributing the words of "The Blue Bird" to Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

Hold onto your hats--this one's a real showstopper. Libby Larsen is one of a handful of American composers working entirely outside the mainstream (i.e., the Minimalist vein), and she is doing so quite successfully. Her works are characterized by their intelligence and their accessibility. Larsen tends to work on smaller canvases, and her String Symphony (1998) here is a good example. It's a robust, somewhat acerbic work that is reminiscent of (but not derivative from) Ned Rorem's 1985 String Symphony. The two collections of songs on the disc have the same bitter sweetness as the String Symphony, but they are more melodically enhanced by Larsen's distinct lyricism. Songs of Light and Love are based on the poems of May Sarton. Songs from Letters (1999) are from the letters of Calamity Jane to her daughter, Janey. Soprano Benita Valente simply dazzles here. This is an excellent introduction to a fine composer. --Paul Cook

Elegance and Beauty.......2000-08-24

I've always been a fan of Libby Larsen's writing, but she has surpassed everything else I've ever heard with the pieces selected for this recording. The string symphony took me through many different emotions, from the first sun of the morning, to the setting sun. Songs of Light and Love is just a masterpiece; the writing complements the poetry perfectly, and the performances are first rate. My favorite thing on this recording, though, is the last movement of the Songs from Letters. Benita Valente sounds as if she understands exactly what it means to have love and lost.
