"At last, an absorbing screen history of the Great Highland War-Pipe, one of the most haunting musical instruments on the planet ...... if this doesn't stir nothing will"

Product Description
From the early braveheart days of William Wallace to Davy Crockett at the Alamo, from the carnage of World War I to the present day, Celtic music has stirred the soul.

The use of the bagpipe in war is as old as war itself. In battle is was said to be worth a hundred guns and its ammunition a music so potent it inspired men to velour and stuck terror in the enemy. The ancients called it 'The Great War Pipe of the North'

This CD is the original soundtrack from the Series 'Instruments of War', where stunning footage, drama and humour are used to bring these 'Celtic Legends' to the screen for the first time. BAND_MEMBERS: Various Pipers Narrators: Hannah Gordon, Tom Conti & Charlton Heston

4 out of 5 stars Recommended for Neo-prog Fans.......2006-10-30

Neo-prog is the version of progressive rock that emerged in the early 80s via bands like Marillion, IQ, Saga, and Pendragon. It was less complex than the classic prog of early to mid 70s Yes, Genesis, ELP, etc., and tended to have shorter songs. I would describe Mostly Autumn as neo-prog with some British folk elements thrown in the mix. They are not as folky as Iona, but folk is part of their sound.

I prefer classic prog, so I can't really get into this band. But I give them 4 stars anyway because what they do, they do pretty well.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-03-25

This double disk set is a great buy. If you aren't totally caught up in the music by the end of your first listen, you will be before the second is through.

5 out of 5 stars Always autumn........2003-02-05

_Catch the Spirit_ is the second anthology released by Mostly Autumn -- actually, it arrives not long after their first one, _Heroes Never Die_. Here's the skinny: _Heroes Never Die_ has gone out of print and has been *replaced* by this new set. Whereas the first anthology was only 12 songs (one disc), this is 23 mmm-tasty songs (two discs).

If you enjoy this band and whether you have _Heroes Never Die_ or not, I recommend for you get this. Now some people might say, "Wah, but I already have all these songs!" Well...that's only partially true. The band has recorded everything here, and sometimes they have some pretty big differences. For instance, Heather Findlay (:P'''') takes over lead vocals on "We Come and We Go". Less evident changes include a deeper bass presence on "Goodbye Alone", a more ethereal atmosphere to "The Gap Is Too Wide", a big riff opening "Nowhere to Hide" rather than drunken singing, a more rocking arrangement on "Prints in the Stone", and a spine-tingling cadences of angels on "Mother Nature" and "Heroes Never Die". If you've heard the band's live album _The Story So Far_, you are likely to recognize that many of the songs here are based on the changes made in the live setting. While the changes are largely subtle, but it's quite remarkable how subtle modifications can really alter the sound of the song. There is also a new song (or maybe an old b-side) called "Noise from My Head" which is, like everything this band does, superb. It is a more rocking song a la "Never the Rainbow" with Heather Findlay's pearly voice.

For the Mostly Autumn newbie, I can think of no better place to start (although all of their albums are excellent in their own right). _Catch the Spirit_ doesn't cost much more than their older albums but you get twice as much material. Mostly Autumns involves strains of symphonic rock flourishing around a pastoral Celtic influences and glints of hard rock. They feature a wealth of instrumentation from flutes and violins to the standard rock setup, and have goddess Heather Findlay and Bryan Josh on vocals. The band also has the most consistently beautiful guitar solos I've ever heard. I think some higher power appeared to lead guitarist Bryan Josh and gave him knowledge of sacred scales that yank at your emotions, like a combination of Steve Rothery and David Gilmour and the special X-element. Beautiful playing...and he does them ALL the time. How does he come up with this stuff?

I might be biased because autumn is my favorite season, but this is really good music. So, like, yeah...check it out. (you can tell I'm really good at ending reviews)

Flutist James Galway and pianist Phil Coulter seek to present a handful of the most widely recognizable Celtic melodies in Legends. "Danny Boy" gets an intimate flute and piano treatment, while the famed "Riverdance" gets a full orchestral background and uillean pipes solo. There's the evocative, sweet expanse of "Harry's Game," and the classic "Mna na h-Eireann (Women of Ireland), with which Sean O'Rioda helped rekindle Irish interest in the country's musical history. Galway and Coulter go beyond the Celtic border to pay Henry Mancini tribute with the lush television miniseries theme, "The Thornbirds," thus crossing into easy listening and certain radio hit territory. This isn't the blazing traditional Celtic music of the post-1960s generation, nor is it the polyethnic mix of today's young Celtic artists. Instead, Legends is a listener-friendly mix of Celtic moods and lite classical, something for all ages to hum along with. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Recording By Two Great Artists.......2005-12-10

I first heard LEGENDS while touring Ireland in the summer of 1998. The bus we traveled on played a cassette tape of it over and over again, and I thought I'd never want to hear it again. As soon as I returned to my home outside of Boston, MA, I wanted to be back in Ireland, revisiting the places I grew to love in an all too short a visit. So as soon as I could, I purchased the CD and I listened to it over and over again just like on the bus in Ireland. As I traveled the roads of Boston, I was thinking of The Cliffs of Moher or the Ring of Kerry.

This CD was the first collaboration between Phil Coulter, a name better known in Ireland at the time, and internationally acclaimed flutist James Galway. As musicians, the two are more similar than different. Both are serious, skilled and versatile musicians who also know how to entertain without sacrificing musical quality. The CD contains a variety of music from Irish standards such as "Danny Boy" and "The Kerry Dances" to contemporary favorites such as the music from RIVERDANCE. There are some original works by Coulter as well as some Coulter arrangements. The one piece that is not Celtic per se, but the listener would never know it's not from the arrangement, is Aaron Copeland's "Hoedown" from RODEO. Each piece has a part for Coulter and Galway, who at times uses traditional Irish flutes to give the music a true Celtic flair.

While I enjoy this disc for the music, there is something else I appreciate about this set and it's follow up WINTER'S CROSSING. In both collaborations, there is a sense of collaboration where the talents of both artists shine. It's been a favorite of mine since 1998 an I'm sure it will be for years to some.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Celtic albums.......2001-02-18

I have to admit that when I first heard of this album, I pictured it as just haveing piano and flute. But when I got this album for Christmas I discovered it was more than music with pianist Coulter and flutist Galway. It is a collection of some of the best music of Ireland. It has traditional tunes like "Believe Me", "Danny Boy", and "Lagan Love". It also included modern contempory hits like the great dance "Riverdance", the classic "Hoedown", "Women of Ireland"(which makes one think of big stars like Sinead O' Conner, Mary Black, and Enya), and a remake of Clannad's hit "Harry's Game". It also includes compositions by Phil Coulter, such as "Battle at Kinsale", "Lament For Wild Geese", and "An Cailin Fionn". There are many excellent musicians accompanying Coulter and Galway, who include Frank Gallagher, David Downes(who has played and recorded with Clannad), and David Cooke on keyboards. The music often contains many traditional sounds with drums, guitar, fiddle, and uillean pipes. There also are many beautiful orchestrations, which brings so many wonderful exciting sounds! Sometimes the music had a male chorus chanting haunting vocals. All of these songs are really good and each one deserves its own praise. "Riverdance" has as much rythm and beauty as the original. "Harry's Game" sounds so enticing with uillean pipes and traditional sounds. "Believe Me/Gentle Maiden" sounds like a lullaby(if only it included the poetic lyrics!). "Women In Ireland" is very up beat with a mix of pop and traditional sounds. "The Valley of Tears" is very poignant with the piano and flute. The two tracks "Thornbirds" and "Lannigan's Ball/Kerry Dances", bring dancing rythm with sounds of traditional jigs. "Danny Boy", fits perfectly with piano and flute. "Music for a Found Harmonium" is one of my favorites, because it has a lot of energy on the piano, flute, and all of the other instruments. "Lament For Wild Geese" is very sad, beautiful, and touching. "Lagan Love" is the best version of this song I have every heard! I never would of thought I would hear that song with drums and chorus. "Ashkon Farewell" is a good reflection of how the American and Celtic cultures have come together. Many Irish and Scots fought in the Civil War. "An Cailin Fionn" is my favorite, for it is one of the most beautiful melodies Ireland has to offer. Phil Coulter composed the tune for Natasha Richardson, the wife of Liam Neeson who is a good friend of Coulter. "Hoedown" brings sounds of the past to the present with folk melodies and orchestrations.

So if you love Celtic music, you will really love this album. This is some of the best music Ireland has to offer.

5 out of 5 stars LEGENDS.......1999-12-03

One of my favorite Celtic CD's..the haunting melodies of the flute..accompanied with the piano as it unravels Ireland's past and hope of a better future...My favorite is "Battle of Kinsale"(The Valley of Tears)it certainly does brings tears to me...The theme to "Thornbirds" is beautiful..as well as every song....a sheer join....a must for any collector of Irish music...

5 out of 5 stars Touching and very beautiful pieces!.......1999-11-04

I'm a big fan of Galway, but never had a chance to listen to Phil Coulter before. Their collaboration is just perfect. I enjoy it as much as Galway's solo effort. It just brings back memory of ancient time when things are less noisy. In fact, I'm thinking of buying another piece of their work.

5 out of 5 stars Super sounds, super tranquility, Great music.......1999-08-24

I was introduced to this duo while traveling in Ireland. I became thorougly enchanted with their sound. The haunting melodies and tranquility that these two men can produce are incredible. Keep including their CDs in your inventory.

5 out of 5 stars I've had it for years... never fails to delight! .......2005-08-11

If you like fairies, faeries or magick or magick ;-) this CD is good to have in your collection.

What I love about this CD is that there is just music, so you can fall asleep to it- or have guests over without them going "what in god's name are you listening to?!" It's very light and airy - you can feel the AIR in this CD and I love it. It definitely reminds you of fairies, and if you love them as much as I do by collecting, painting, drawing or admiring them this CD will help you get in the fairy/faery mood!

If you like my review please vote for it - any questions, IM me at WinterGetsMe. Have a great day!

2 out of 5 stars The music is nice but............2001-11-12

There is hardly any singing in this one. I have bought the others and they are much better. This one seemed as if they were in a hurry in order to get it done.

5 out of 5 stars Spirited Away.......2001-07-11

A close friend of my son's had purchased this CD and brought it with her when she visited him from out of state. I saw it at his house and asked if I could borrow it as I was intrigued by the name and the cover. The next day I played it in my car, and after just a few moments of hearing it, I found myself drawn into the mystry of the music. I was completely entranced, and kept playing it over and over. I just had to have it, so bought another one for my son's friend. But I found myself telling my sister about it, because I knew she would love it, and gave her the one I had replaced. I again replaced it, but ended up giving it to another friend who I knew would love it! I have never bought so many copies of a CD without having one! Finally I purchased yet another copy to replace the one I borrowed, keeping the original for myself. I still just love this music. I have the other CD's by this artist, but I like this one the best because it is purely instrumental. Don't misunderstand - the others are great. I just like this one BEST. It takes me away to magical places, lets my imagination soar and encourages exploration of conceivable possibilities.

5 out of 5 stars A Faerie Tale.......2001-03-15

This recording transports the listener to the lush green woods of Ireland or any other enchanted Celtic place. The piano is lilting and otherworldly.Exquisite!

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting,Breathtaking........2000-10-03

I heard this from my Mom who also likes New Age music. I instantly loved it and got the cassette for myself. It is a very beautiful, sweet and enchanting listen. It 'twinkles' around the listener and uplifts the heart and soul. When you close your eyes, you can SEE the moonlit,fog-enshrouded forest and the shimmering, dancing faeries.

Another great album to hear like this one: 2002:River of Stars.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2006-06-04

For all Celtic music lovers, this is a 'must have' CD. Being a musician, I feel that these guys hit all the right notes on this one. Another thing is that I never get tired of listening to it. That in itself, says a lot. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Songs that Draw you in........2005-10-16

This CD was given to me a few years ago and I have been listening to it ever since. The reoccuring themese and the way the songs draw you along in their story is just amazing. I use this cd to relax, to write my papers to or just when I need a minute to myself. I would have to say the first song, the bard and warrior, is my favorite song but I love each and every one.

You can easily close your eyes and let the music unfold the legend it tells in your mind, a great experience. Combined with the legend booklet it comes with, this CD is really a must have.

5 out of 5 stars The Ancient Song.......2005-02-14

If you are looking for one excellent collection of Celtic music for your library, then you have found it. This is music to both heal and inspire the soul. The blend of traditional instruments, human voice, and sounds from nature come close to perfection. If you close your eyes you can clearly see the various legendary themes covered:
1) The Bard and the Warrior,
2) The Dream of Taliesin,
3) Tylwyth Teg,
4) The Crossing,
5) The Fortunate Isle,
6) Lady Sovereignty,
7) CuChulainn's Last Battle,
8) The Raven Stone,
9) Way of the Warrior,
10) Isle of the Everliving,
11) Ancient Song.

A well-written and designed little booklet is included to retell the tales of Taliesin (the bard) and CuChulainn (the Warrior.) The tale of the Ancient Song is also included- of how the Celts of old believed that the world was upheld and sustained by a single all-embracing melody. After listening to this collection on a quiet evening, you will have no doubts that this is so.

5 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL.......2003-12-03

I've been listening to this CD for years, even though I'm just a kid. It's so wonderful. I've used this CD to get to sleep, meditate, do yoga, and actually, to do dances for auditions for. I love it! A definite A plus!

5 out of 5 stars Great Relaxation Music.......2003-02-25

This CD will put you in a mellow mood in a heartbeat. This is not only my favorite album by Johnson and Dunning, it is also one of my all time favorite Celtic music CDs. If you like this CD, try any of the albums by Brian Dunning's group "Nightnoise". You'll not be disappointed. However, avoid 'Byzantium-The Book of Kells & St. Aidan's Journey" (the follow-up CD to this), it is no where near as good as Celtic Legends

I may have a new favorite artist. The harmonies and light instrumentation blend to give the listener an aural caress that lasts for the whole album. I prefer music where the singer blends into the music and becomes one of the instruments instead of insisting on being the focus of the spotlight.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond the Pale continues the magic.......2002-01-03

Laura Powers does it again. Legends of the Goddess II Beyond the Pale, has all the magic and beauty but is unique. Beyond the Pale has everything you could wish for. Her songwriting is poetry and if you liked the Mists of Avalon or Braveheart you will love this cd. I especially loved the Songs A Heart in Winter and Long Way Down. Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2005-09-24

I know I have said this about some of the other Celtophile CDs, but this definetly a must have! Especially if you love fiddle. Most of them are fast, but there are a couple that are slow. Definetly a foot tapper. You can't go wrong with this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Legends of the Scottish Fiddle.......2005-02-04

What a beautiful album of Scottish music this is! I absolutely love it. It's so beautifully carried out, it just transports you. It reminds me of some music I heard on Granville Island, Canada. Unfortunately, they're not a major group and you can't buy their albums anywhere...but this comes really close. It's different of course, and true to itself, but it still evokes good memories.

Turn it on anytime you need a lift. There are so few instruments here, and you can hear them all, which is an amazing experience. This music paints a picture of beautiful Scotland. It's very complex, but it's something you just want to get up and jig to. I turn it on at work and it gets me going faster. There's some really fast-paced music on Legends, but somehow it's not overwhelming. I'm not sure how they pulled it off, but mostly I just enjoy it.

Heart and soul is what Legends of the Scottish Fiddle creates. You simply do not find music like this every day--even every year. In the Celtic tradition, Legends heals the soul. This music is like a first kiss every time you play it--beautiful, new, surprising at every turn.

5 out of 5 stars A great sampler!.......2000-01-04

This is a terrific Cd for lovers of Celtic music, especially for fiddle fans. Several artists & styles, from slow & lyrical to fast & fiery. Some very traditional cuts, some great departures on a Celtic theme. And you can't beat the price. Gotta have it!

5 out of 5 stars Showcasing traditional Irish folk music .......2005-01-06

Fans of Celtic-rooted acoustic music are well aware of the premier offerings that Maggie's Music makes available to this widely popular genre. Some very highly recommended additions to personal and community library CD music collections would necessarily include Carolan's Gift showcasing traditional Irish folk music in the manner of famed Irish harper Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738) with a chamber music style performed on Celtic harp, Irish flute, fiddle, hammered dulcimer, viola da gamba, guitar, and piano. Consisting of fourteen superbly performed and recorded selections, Carolan's Gift features Miss Murphy (3:10); The Two William Davies (6:33); Sir Charles Coote/Captain Higgins (4:30); Terence MacDonough (2:14); Elizabeth McDermott Rowe/Miss Noble (4:36); Bridget Cruise (2:58); Constantine Maguire (2:35); Paspie Minuet/Mr. Waller (5:11); Sidh Beag, Sidh Mor (1:29); Mary O'Neill (2:38); Mabel Kelly (3:31); Isabella Burke (3:57); Carolan's Quarrell with the Landlady (3:19); and Fanny Poer (3:43).
