This One Is Good---But Not "The Best".......2006-09-12

Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ", September 11, 2006

The "best version" of the "Merry Widow" is NOT this one. The best version is the one with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved that rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note LOUDER than the chorus---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!

The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, the Bronhill CD is made in Holland and "there is one left", so it says on Amazon. Joan Sutherland under the baton of Richard Bonynge.......2004-02-24

THE MERRY WIDOW, Franz Lehar's dizzying and delightful operetta chestnut, is given the grand treatment in this highlights album featuring Joan Sutherland.

There have been many widows (including June Bronhill, Anna Moffo, Beverly Sills), though Joan Sutherland's WIDOW has always been especially grand. The supporting cast on this recording features Werner Krenn as Count Danilo with Valerie Masterson as Valencienne, Regina Resnik as Zo-Zo and John Brecknock as Camille, with Francis Egerton, John Fryatt, Graeme Ewer and the Ambrosian Singers.

Sutherland's performance as Hanna Glawari is full of masterful strokes and she approaches the score with a twinkle in her eye, aware of the comedy in the piece. Richard Bonynge conducts the National Philharmonic Orchestra and they are especially chill-inducing with the Overture.

All-in-all a superlative recording at a bargain price.

Performances better than the recording.......2004-01-18

Unfortunately this CD was made from the Australian TV tapeing of The Merry Widow, a shame that the microphones are not of high enough quality to capture the really fine performances, it is hard enough to understand what is being sung when properly recorded let alone when the equipment stinks, however if you enjoy Joan Southerland as much as I do you can overlook the flaws in the recording and just get carried away with the voice, it would be nice if a libretto had been included, a rarity today, that used to be common in the era of the LP

The beautiful voice of The Beautiful South.......2003-09-30

This is the voice behind The Housemartins and The Beautiful South and his first solo album. Heaton's charm and his talent are the lyrics he writes that are so full of bitter humour as he dissects various relationships. His voice hasn't the range he had during his younger years, but it's still very moving to hear.

Paul is still alive.......2003-06-30

Well,
strange story. When i discovered the Housemartins in 1986 i thought the beatle's spirit was in their LP. Saw them on stage (we were happy few in Paris - automn 86-) and was sure that i met a new miracle of music ... too bad they stopped so fast. Of course the beautiful south came but the spirit has gone away ... however their first 3 LP were quite good .... but the rest was a kind of bad soup ...
But Paul is Paul, it means one of the most fantastic "pop voice" i've ever heard (with Morissey, Fergal Sharkey ....). If you think you know "you've got a friend" (from C. King) listen to Paul's performance and you'll change your mind .....

Paul Heaton, minus the B.S........2003-01-04

If you've always suspected that Paul Heaton WAS The Beautiful South, here's your proof. I have been waiting 13 long years for a solo effort from him (and let me make clear: I am NOT a Beautiful South fan; I am a Paul Heaton fan) so I guess this album is a wish come true.

Paul Heaton has always been outstanding on two levels: his lyrics and his vocals. He is half-present on this album.

The cynicism is there (and welcomed) as always ("the difference between the junkie and me...I always failed successfully"). Rumor has it, Heaton's off the sauce, and I was afraid it would affect his typically brilliant lyrics (is that selfish of me?). Fortunately it hasn't. Melodies are damn catchy as well.

Sadly, Heaton seems to have forgotten that he can sing. I first listened through the cd, skipping from one song to the next, straining to hear SOMETHING -- some trace of his powerful, ethereal vocals (ala "Lean on Me" / "Let Love Speak Up Itself"). No evidence of it on this record, though, which I found very disappointing. Over the course of his career, Paul lost his faith in God. Did God take his gift away? Hmmm.

Frankly, I think Paul missed his window. He should have immediately gone solo following the Housemartins' breakup, but instead wasted much time fooling around with the Beautiful South (whose first 3 albums were fantastic -- "Welcome to The Beautiful South", "Choke" & "0898" -- BUY THEM -- but the albums following them were sort of flat).

But I'm being harsh. I still adore Paul -- he could sing the Zimbabwe national anthem and I would buy it. Overall, not a bad album. An obvious must for any Housemartins/BS fan, but not my favorite of all of his efforts. Go ahead and buy it, but while you've got the credit card out, purchase a copy of the Housemartins' "London 0 Hull 4" album as well, and listen to "I'll Be Your Shelter" 'til your ears bleed.

Don't overlook this album!!.......2002-12-28

Well, I am please to inform those of that are fans of the Beautiful South that this is a remarkable record considering Paul is on his own. The sound is that of the South and a little bit more. He seems to be experimenting with techno sounds on a couple of tracks, but not too much so that it makes you skip to the next song. I like most of the album and really really dig the rest. It is worth the import price. I should also mention that he seems to be trying out three new female vocalists here since the departure of Jackie a couple of years ago. Only one caught my attention, but they all serve his voice well. If you go to the French Amazon site , you may find it cheaper there. Good luck and enjoy.

A Different Form Of Alienation..........2002-07-25

OK...I have been a fan of Serial Joe since Mistake...and a big fan at that (of their hard rock beats). Well, hearing of Completely, the first single of their latest album (Last Chance) At the Romance Dance...I couldn't help but feel alienated. Either way, I still bought it, cause I liked Completely, though I never even heard the entire song till I bought the album. So...in two simple words...IT ROCKED! I fell in love with Last Chance as soon as I got it. The album sure got a lot of critisim, but I believe that it's their best work yet. The second single Unintended, is a beautiful song I believe, with it's smart lyrics and smooth rythem. I loved Last Chance...and if you liked Completely, you will LOVE the rest! It's worth the money, trust me!!! So...Last Chance is a change from Serial Joe's origional work, but the band is still the same (Ryan's still freaky hot!) and their music will still grab you and never let go!!! Last Change is AWESOME! The change of music may have alienated you...but trust me...it's in a GOOD way!

This cd is awesome. They are an awesome canadian band and need some promotion!! I am in love with Serial Joe, and this is their best work yet! Download the songs to this CD before you buy it to just see how great they are. It's hard to chose a favorite, but Suddenly, Unintended, Mary, and Save Me are on the the most listened to on the cd. A must buy!

Sounds like an album cut off "Thriller".......2004-01-03

Michael's latest single "One More Chance", sounds more like a well produced album cut, rather than the pop hit he so desperatley needs. The R. Kelly penned song itself is okay and Michael's voice is as strong and versatile as ever. The problem with "One More Chance" is that it sounds so safe and generic. It is calculated musicianship taken to an extreme. It's as if Michael is playing it so careful and plotting his musical moves. What happened to the passion and risk taking that personified Jackson's musical output in the 1980's? It is sadly missing here. Instead, "One More Chance" is predictable in its structure: 1st lyric/chorus/2nd lyric/chorus/bridge/chorus to fade....and the two remixes here add little, although the Ron G. mix does had a jolt of life (via swirling synth effects). Paul Oakenfold's Pop mix is awful at worst and awkward at best. The single for Michael Jackson's "One More Chance" is a mixed bag of sure hits and misfires - lower your expectations and you may not be that disappointed. But, there was a day when Michael Jackson offered his audience SO MUCH more than this, and seeing a talented artist like this in decline is a sad sight to behold.

This is sort of a chill-out dance track, nothing overly heavy, especially the Afterlife Mix which is in ballad mode that would be at home on a smooth jazz station. The vocal sample on the song comes from a 1982 hit from Toto called "I Won't Hold You Back"

It's A Cover! Did You Know That?!?.......2002-01-16

Do you know that it is a cover of Toto's hit single "I won't hold you back"?!? I didn't! I heard Sanchez' track this summer and I really liked it. Few months later I realized that I had heard this vocal (used in "Another Chance") before! It was a completely different kind of song, a ballad... I'm telling it to everyone who is amazed with Sanchez' track: it's great, but also try to listen to Toto... Great song.

Close your windows, lock the doors, and try not to hear "another chance" by Roger Sanchez; it's similar to Daft Punk's "One more time", but even more catchy. You will spend all the day singing "if I had another chance..." You will feel a chill everytime you hear it. Wow, the song is even beautiful.

Roger Sanchez lands another hit.......2001-08-01

After I heard this Single from Roger Sanchez the first time, it immediatly ranked the top of my "Best-House-Songs" list. "Another Chance"- an absolutely great earworm to have, filled with beautiful strings and great beats in the background, and soft but strong vocals that make the song special as it is. One can hear this song on a romatic evening with his/her loved-one or even just hear it to chill out... This is the best song that Roger Sanchez has ever created; it is award-worthy! This single is worth buying, believe me.
