One thing you know you'll get from Franti and Spearhead is a certain kind of crystal clarity--on the production, musicianship, and, of course, in the righteous political message. Released two years after Franti traveled by himself to war-ravaged Baghdad, Gaza Strip, and the West Bank, each of these songs deals with the human cost of war poignantly and pointedly. The lyrics may seem simplistic when removed from the songs--"Those who start wars never fight them/And those who fight wars never like them" and "The F15 is a homicide bomber"--but very few artists have the honesty and balls that Franti does. Bless him for that. Spearhead might lose credibility with some by tying Peter Tosh's chant to "legalize it" to their call for revolution, but those folks are not in the target demographic, anyway. Those who are will thoroughly dig this. From the jam band accents of "Time to Go Home" to the reggae of "Light Up Ya Lighter" to the U2-ish ballad "I Know I'm Not Alone," it's easily Franti's best album yet. --Mike McGonigal

Description

In 2004, Franti and his team traveled to the core of the red-zoned, war torn neighborhoods of Baghdad, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip with his guitar, video cameras, and the intent to experience first hand the human cost of war. Out of this journey, he created a compelling documentary ("I Know I'm Not Alone") and a searing, reflective album of original songs. "Yell Fire!" is his most compelling, engaged collection of songs, fired by a fury at the injustice of war, and a rediscovery of the love and community that supports those doing the fighting. It embraces reggae, blues, folk, hip-hop, and the anthemic politics of rock artists like U2 and Springsteen. With massive grooves and soaring choruses, Franti and Spearhead have produced an album to inspire and ignite.

4 out of 5 stars Best music to emerge fromt he Iraq War.......2007-07-13

Michael Franti is a dedicated musician and person. If you get a chance to see him live, don't miss him. Yell Fire! does not quite capture the power of his live concerts, but comes very close. The songs on Yell Fire! capture his love of humanity and sardonic commentary on the war. A few of his songs sound like covers of U2 songs, but if you are going to cover a band, you could do worse than U2. Franti's music is based in reggae, but offers a broad variety of music that is quite good.

5 out of 5 stars No one will replace Bob Marley, but Franti comes close.......2007-07-09

i purchased the Yell Fire album about 3months ago i find i keep going back to listen to it again and again as it has the certain magic of a charismatic communicator that can give you both so much spirituality and outrage in a riveting mix.
The voice, the intensity, the knowing you are listening to the real thing, and nothing phony, knowing that love and outrage can co-exist, which brings immediately to mind the last word of the album "Co-Existence".
Michael Franti has been just below the radar for some years now but i feel his "Yell Fire" album will make more and more aware the gift this man has.
i have never seen him perform, but i can imagine him at 6'6" and ean and with dred-locks makes for a fine stage persona as he moves to the beat.
One wanting fine writing and beat from a man with a message that needs be heard, this is THE ALBUM, it is a must.
For those of neo-conservative bent or merely think they be good citizens of good country that is bringing democracy to the world, don't buy this album, you would despise it as you are what he is OUTRAGED at.
As Franti sings "The revolution, it will come without warning", i simply think "yes".
i am glad we have at a superb talent such as Franti to stand up and sing out his heart, a great album is this "Yell Fire". Max90

5 out of 5 stars The best hip-hop hippie protest and dance music out there!.......2007-06-11

After some of their sublime recent efforts, I was ready for a letdown, but this CD just keeps giving and giving. Yell Fire is an absolute rocker and shows Michael isn't ready to back down from laying the truth out there. Many other great social consciousness and peace music tracks on there ('It's time to come home,' 'East to the West', 'Hello Hello', ...). Also my 14 month old daughter loves to dance to tracks 8 and 9!

Michael's leading the love revolution. When I saw him in Tucson last year it was one of the greatest performances I've seen. The most amazing things was his total confidence in himself which seems to have led him into a position of being totally selfless in his sharing.

5 out of 5 stars Great! Great! Great!!!.......2007-05-19

I am not usually a "reggae" fan, but this album is great. It has a timely message of waking up about war and it sure wakes up the listener. My husband asked me if I had worn the grooves off the CD yet. He (the old time country music fan) is even singing along with a couple songs. I would gladly give this album as a gift to anyone one I know. In fact, I have been spreading the word about this album to anyone who will listen.

As usual, Michael Franti and Spearhead resist any kind of pigeonholing. Though it could be loosely classified as a hip-hop album, Everyone Deserves Music is, more accurately, a well-crafted and eclectic collection of political protest songs and power ballads. Franti and crew confidently build upon a vast array of musical styles, ranging from the electro-Caribbean funk that bubbles through "Pray for Grace" to the smooth, classic-rock styling of "Love Why Did You Go Away." "We Don't Stop," featuring Gift Of Gab's adept rhymes, recalls the Clash's instrumental party track, "The Magnificent Dance." R&B singer Ledisi adds soul to the Sly & Robbie-produced "Bomb the World (Armageddon Version)." The disc also contains a 23-minute mini-documentary, which highlights the band's creative process. Spearhead is a band unafraid to bring positivity to light and listeners should appreciate the message. To quote Franti himself, "Power to the peaceful." --Rebecca Levine

5 out of 5 stars One of my favourite albums of this decade.......2007-02-16

This is a definite 5 star album ! Wonderful songs, terrific vibrant playing, socially-aware lyrics, and underlying all of this music is a strong source of positive energy, which would seem to originate from the person of Michael Franti himself. There are uplifiting soul-inspired songs , such as the breezy Feeling Free, the rousing and chorus-driven title tune Everyone Deserves Music , and my favourite song on the album the inspirational, fantastic Yes I Will. Songs don't come better than this one! Slow tune Love Why Did You Go Away has a gradual building tempo, while more immediate tunes like the pretty Pray For Grace, the opening track What I Be and the funk wordplay of We Don't Stop also work very well. Definitely check out the landmark song Bomb The World, which is a cry for peace in a time when there seem to be new wars starting up in lots of places. It's a great song that everyone ought to pay attention to. It also appears in a second, rather different dub-influenced version as the penultimate track. Love Invincible and quiet final track Crazy Crazy Crazy round out this invaluable recording that manages to use many different musical elements to comprise a wonderful whole.

I'm sure it's been said before by others, but everyone deserves THIS music !

One of my favourite albums of this decade so far.

5 out of 5 stars Purely Sublime.......2006-08-01

I just can't get enough of this album. I first heard of Michael Franti & Spearhead when hanging out at a friends house who only had three cds, one of which was "Stay Human." In no time I found the lyrics from that album running through my head all day, so I decided to make my next cd purchase a Spearhead album. Since I got this cd it has become the most played album of my collection. Never have I hear a musician draw from so many genres of music so effortlessly. The album has such an array of different sounds, and each song is diverse in of itself. When you add that to some of the finest contemporary protest poetry, you're left with an irresistable cd that is perfect for any situation... chillin' out by yourself at home, or cranking up the positive vibrations at a party. If you like any forms of hip-hop, soul, r&b, reggae, folk music, or really any good music in general, this is a must have for your collection

5 out of 5 stars One of the best CDs ever.......2006-03-22

I don't know what you expect from a dreaded guy showing his bare foot on the cover, but that picture is meant to fool you. This is the most honest& best album I have played over the air in 2004. The more times you listen to this cd all the way through, the more you'll be convinced this man is put here just to help you see. Very rarely you'll find such an artist at his peak, and virtually unknown. Very proud to say my listeners request Michael Franti regularly. Every flower has a right to be bloomin :) Brilliant!

There aren't many hip-hop artists out there today who give a damn about putting positive messages in their music, but Michael Franti is one of them. Ever since his days with seminal group Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, Franti has infused his sounds with insightful and thought-provoking lyricism, and this latest Spearhead joint is no exception. Stay Human tackles, among other things, the subject of capital punishment. Through a make-believe community radio station, Franti tells the tale of Sister Fatima, a healer and activist who is being put to death for a crime that her community believes she didn't commit. The "live" broadcasts act as elaborate skits between Franti's insouciant, soul-rap hybrids and help to expose the arrogant nature of America's judicial system and the brutal finality of the death sentence. Musically, Franti has created a richer, more string-laden backdrop for his tracks, creating some of his best idiosyncratic, feel-good vibes to date. But while the funkadelic edge of "Rock the Nation" and laid-back ballad style of "Do Ya Love" are worthy in their own right, Franti's real genius lies in his ability to weave opinions into compelling narratives so that we don't feel we're being battered over the head with someone else's ideas. Emotive, soulful, and opinionated, Spearhead are almost single-handedly keeping alive a tradition epitomized by Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, and Bill Withers. Don't sleep. --Paul Sullivan

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Mostly great.......2006-05-25

The music on this album is amazing, and the message is right-on. In fact this is probably Franti's best ever album when judged from the viewpoint of music, lyrics, and message.

Unfortunately I found the radio broadcast segments to be ill-conceived and intrusive, but they are easily skipped.

The "music fan" who praised Stay Human but only gave it 1 star because of objections to who Franti chooses to give political support to needs to learn more about the Mumia Abu-Jamal case, which is nowhere near as cut & dried as their post suggests. The trial transcripts don't tell the whole story - the whole point is that this was considered an unfair and biased trial. Dig a little deeper and you'll find plenty to question.

5 out of 5 stars So good!.......2005-08-06

Michael Franti and Spearhead has yet to let me down. This album is yet another that not only is a showcase for their amazing musical talent, but it also tells a strong story that spurs the mind to think about the world in which we live. As a long time advocate for abolishing the death penalty, this record tells a tale that I will never forget in my arguments to abolish the death penalty. Yet another record of targeting a specific population, and ignoring white collar crime (which in my opinion effects the population much more than anything other crime).

5 out of 5 stars "Stay Human"--One of my top 10.......2005-05-07

This album has to be the best that Michael Franti & Spearhead has put out so far....

The music: the band is very musical and pulls in lots of different influences that combine together in a completely original way: hip-hop, jazz, african, rock, spoken word, etc. Every time I listen I hear something new.

The lyrics: As I was an English major, lyrics are very important to me. Franti writes great lyrics-- he is an intellectual poet as far as I am concerned, and you can hear his skill in lyricism come through on tracks like "Speaking of Tongues" and "Skin on the Drum."

Political Message: Franti's political message is to spread tolerance and love. Some of the tracks are explicitly political, such as "Oh My God," while others are just a wonderful celebration of life. It's a good balance.

The only thing that gets a little annoying after you listen to the album several times is the radio show that shows up between most of the tracks. It's a great political message, but sometimes you just want to listen to music and not get preached at. That shouldn't deter you from buying this great album, though.

Great CD!!!

4 out of 5 stars Music with heart.......2005-04-25

Although I loved the Disposable Heroes and I think that Home is a fantastic album I stayed away from this album for a long time. I had heard that Michael Franti had lost it - that he had crossed the line from pointed political and social commentary into buttock clenching political correctness and cliché.

Nothing could be further from the truth - this is a wonderful CD. Yes, there is a message but Franti manages to get his point across while making an excellent CD. Great songs in a variety of styles are interspersed with radio segments describing the lead up to and the aftermath of the execution of an innocent woman. There are no duff tracks or off-key moments.

Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Franti's Great American Opera.......2004-10-20

Stay Human is about as operatic a work as we've heard from any 21st century contemporary artist. Franti lets loose and through the guise of pretense of a dramatic play occuring at a radio station we are introduced to a group of characters including the two radio talk show hosts, Sister Fatima, the "Governor" and a host of listeners - liberal, conservative and brain dead, calling to weigh in on the fate of faith healer Sister Fatima now on death row and facing imminent execution that same night.

Woven between scenes at the radio station Spearhead's songs are brought to life that emphasizes Franti's message in a manner which could only be hinted it without the dramatic structure surrounding it.

The first time I heard this album was late on a hot summer night, on the back deck of a friend's house. He didn't prepare me for what I was about to experience and at the end of "Skin on the drum" I was emotionally exhausted with chills down my back and the hair on the back of my neck standing on edge. I'm not ashamed to say I also cried. This is music presented in such a powerhouse of a theatrical production it should be staged or filmed. As it stands, its effectiveness is not diminished one iota by being "audio only."

While some may eschew the socio/politico commentary embedded into the work, no one who listens and experiences it in its entirety will go unmoved, or turn it off free from thought. For these very reasons "Stay Human" is one of the most important works and deserves a wide audience. A truly remarkable achievement from Franti and Spearhead.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Work Music.......2007-04-19

I thoroughly enjoy ambient techno (especially any that uses the tabla drum) when I am trying to concentrate on difficult problems or reports. This album has an amazing mix of different artists that come together seamlessly to relax my mind and focus my thoughts. I highly recommend it for any college student or over-worked cube monkey (like me)!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro to the World of Six Degrees .......2005-08-08

I love finding great comps like this one. The variety keeps things interesting and it's a great way to get turned on to new artists. Even if you don't find every track appealing, chances are you'll find much else to love if you like international flavors and have a sense of adventure.

For me, the most thrilling discovery I've made through this CD is dZihan & Kamien. Their modern take on Latin-jazz found on "Stiff Jazz" is at once relaxing and thrilling and I love the electronic touches. Some time ago, I fell in love with a certain David Bowie track called "South Horizon" from his BHUDDA OF SUBURBIA CD (see my review if interested). It's basically an excellent jazz track with techno elements mixed in. Since then I've been on the lookout for innovative variations on jazz that incorporate electronica, trip-hop, etc. If you have any suggestions for this kind of music, please get my e-address from my home page and drop me a line.

Other highlights: practically every track here is a highlight! There are other great examples of original, Latin-flavored jazz like "Lenu" by Bobi Cespedes with some stellar trumpet, vibes and fantastic drums. There's also some wild turntable action on this track that works amazingly well. The Michael Franti & Spearhead track is smooth and wonderful with a positive message. I also love the East Indian club track by MIDIval PunditZ and the Karsh Kale cut is epic and beautiful, love all those tablas.

If you're new to 6 DEGREES I would highly recommend getting this sampler. It's a great way to expand your musical horizons.

5 out of 5 stars ear popping smorgasbord.......2004-04-10

I came to this collection in search of the track "Delirium" by Euphoria, which, with its slick guitar work, is an innovative invitation to the rest of the album. While originally intent on finding more Asian electronica, this international collection has an amazing array of gems, ranging from the sultry "Stay Human" and "So Nice (Summer Samba)" to the perky "Stiff Jazz" and "Bhangra Fever." Karsh Kale's "Milan" rounds out the collection. By the end of the collection, I feel as though I have taken a trip around the world, sampling a wide assortment of music from the four corners. Music for mutliple moods will be found here. It's also a great introduction to new artists that you may not have come across before. Having heard this collection, I'm on the search for more by Euphoria, Wally Brill, and Karsh Kale. I would also really be interested in hearing more of the Six Degrees albums. This is a great testament to the quality of the work of the label.

A benefit CD for Earthjustice, Where We Live touts "the Universal Right to Clean Air & Clean Water." Sixteen tracks in various rootsy styles wind a thread through nature imagery ("Like a tree planted by the water, I shall not be moved," sings Pops Staples; Bob Dylan is represented by his great, forgotten 1971 single "Watching the River Flow") and a more general theme of peace and social justice (Willie Nelson's "Living in the Promiseland," the Neville Brothers' "Sister Rosa"). Veteran singer-activists Sweet Honey in the Rock link the two with "More Than a Paycheck," a song about the perils of pollution and simply trying to keep food on the table. Cannily promoting a theme of Christian spirituality (the Staples and Nevilles tracks, along with those by Maria Muldaur and Bonnie Raitt, Tina Turner and Robert Cray, and John Hammond and Tom Waits) as a corollary to environmental support, the album also seeks to pull the sense of righteousness away from corporate and right-wing political interests. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Great diverse mix-soulful, groovy, upbeat & surprise ending!.......2003-10-07

Yeah, the Capt. Beefheart bit at the end is jarring but hilarious. According to the track notes (and you can read all about this cd & listen to some of the tracks at www.wherewelive.org) the Capt. sung it over the phone to the album's compiler and you can hear them laughing at the end! It's his first "recording" in years...

I think all of the tracks are considered hard-to-find if not impossible. This freshness makes all the tracks worthy, even if you know the artist inside out (like me & Willie Nelson). Some we're all just hungry for more of, like Norah Jones. Definately in the soulful & groovy category, nothing hard or pulsing. Good all-round anytime music.

5 out of 5 stars Great Gift Idea for the Holidays.......2003-10-06

1. I hate shopping, especially during the holidays.
2. One year I tried avoiding shopping by making a donation to a charitable organization in the name of family/friends, didn't go over too well. Nice thought...but let's face it, everyone likes opening presents.

This CD solves both my problems. Most compilation CD's usually have a few good songs, this one has a ton. A great variety of artists and styles, really has something for everyone.

My holiday shopping is going to be alot easier this year, and I'll be giving gifts to help a great cause.

4 out of 5 stars Rare cuts, nice mix.......2003-10-02

I got a review copy for a newsletter I do. Wow. I usually don't go for compilations - but the mix here is really nice. (Beware the surprise track by Captain Beefheart at the end designed to wake you up.)

Need a groovy dinner disc? This is it. And for a good cause it seems.

Played this one for the girlfriend and she asked me to play it again. A rarity around my house.

Pick it up.

5 out of 5 stars Good Cause, Better Music.......2003-10-02

This is a magnificent collection of cuts from wonderful artists to benefit Earthjustice, the nonprofit environmental law firm that is busting its chops trying to stop the Bush administration from destroying all that is healthy and beautiful on this earth of ours.
But that, in fact, is beside the point. This eclectic compilation stands on its own. (It could as well have been called "Biological Diversity" as "Where We Live.") The loose theme--save the earth--save ourselves, is carried through the performances by Norah Jones (a song called "Peace" that is not on her first CD), Bob Dylan ("Watching the River Flow"), Willie Nelson ("Living in the Promiseland"), Los Lobos ("What's Going On"), Mose Allison, Ruben Blades, Maria Muldaur and Bonnie Raitt, Tina Turner and Robert Cray, John Hammond and Tom Waits, Sweet Honey in the Rock, The Neville Brothers--I mean, what's not to like here?
Politics aside, this is a great collection.

3 out of 5 stars How Could Anyone Mistake This CD As Being A George Clinton/P-Funk One?.......2006-04-02

It says it right on the cover: SPEARHEAD. Nuthin' needs correcting as it's correct already.

Hey, I dig George and P-Funk but I wouldn't have mistaken Spearhead as being GC/P-Funk.

Nobody made any mistakes except the persons not reading the name and info correctly.

As for the recordings on this live set, Amazon hasn't got up any samplers yet so I can't comment on them. And as I just got done reviewing the earlier "Live At The Fillmore" recordings and was disappointed by that set I won't be buying this Roxy set nor the Sydney ones until I can really hear how they sound. I will remain hopeful that the above live recordings as well as the Sydney ones are way better than the Fillmore ones.

For the moment, let me just encourage anyone reading this that you SHOULD check into Michael Franti & Spearhead's studio albums as they really are fine, soulful pieces of music.

    1 out of 5 stars Beware!!!!!!!.......2004-12-08

I had recently ordered this CD, to find out that it is not George Clinton at all!!! When I opened the package, it was Spearhead, Instant Live: Roxy, not P-Funk. None of the songs listed on the set list were even on the CD!! I was siked to funk out, but never got the chance to!
